I was initially inclined to re-file this statement in the ‘Discredited’ section of the Archive, a new category I’ve created that will, I suspect, be housing the majority of these files.

However, Sasha did some digging into the police reports of the time and it turns out that between 2005 and 2010, when Mr Watts’ encounter supposedly took place, there were six disappearances in and around the Old Fishmarket Close: Jessica McEwen in November 2005, Sarah Baldwin in August 2006, Daniel Rawlings in December of the same year, then Ashley Dobson and Megan Shaw in May and June of 2008. Then finally, as Mr Watts mentioned, John Fellowes in March 2010. All six disappearances remain unsolved.

Baldwin and Shaw were definitely smokers, but there’s no evidence either way about the others, if they’re even connected. Sasha did find one other thing, specifically in the case of Ashley Dobson. It was a copy of the last photograph taken by her phone and sent to her sister Siobhan. The caption was “check out this drunk creeper lol”, but the picture is of a darkened, apparently empty, alleyway, with stairs leading up into it.

It appears to be the same alleyway which Mr. Watts described in his statement, the one that, according to the maps of the area, leads to Tron Square, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone in the photograph at all. Sasha took the liberty of running it through some editing programs, though, and increasing the contrast appears to reveals the outline of a long, thin hand, roughly at what would be waist level on a male of average height. I find it oddly hard to shake off the impression that it’s beckoning.

'It's a moment Doctor Who fans have been talking about since it happened – the epic bi-generation, which saw Ncuti Gatwa and David Tennant's Doctors exist alongside one another.

In the final 60th anniversary special, The Giggle, viewers saw the Doctor split into two, with both incarnations of the Time Lord appearing side-by-side, and while the moment was truly iconic, there was a bit more to it in the original script.

Featured in this month's edition of Doctor Who Magazine is an excerpt from the script that didn't make the final cut, between the Doctor (David Tennant), Donna (Catherine Tate) and Mel (Bonnie Langford) – and it includes a notable mention of the Rani.

The Rani, who was first introduced in 1985's The Mark of the Rani, was portrayed on screen by Kate O'Mara and later voiced by Siobhan Redmond for Big Finish audio dramas.

She is a nemesis of the Doctor and is a renegade Time Lord, who experiments on other species, including humans.

In the scene, with the Fourteenth Doctor's hands glowing, Donna asks Mel: "Have you seen this before?"

Mel responds: "No, I missed it, I was unconscious," going on to clarify to an inquisitive Donna: "Well, the TARDIS was attacked, by the Rani, she was this evil Time Lady, although not evil, more like amoral, and she dragged the TARDIS down to this planet called Lakertya-."

The Doctor interrupts and the focus is back on him again.

Even though the moment didn't make the finished episode, this script detail is bound to fuel fan speculation that the Rani could return in future episodes.

There are currently lots of theories about the identity of Ruby Sunday's birth mother, while Anita Dobson's mysterious Mrs Flood is also keeping secrets.

Plus, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted actress Susan Twist in two recent episodes and suspect there could be more to come involving her.

And that's before we get into the unidentified figure who picked up the gold tooth that trapped the Master in The Giggle, or the Meep's boss, or even The One Who Waits.

Could the Rani be involved along the way? We'll just have to wait and see.'

Y'know what I think would be cool. If one of the one-off statement givers came back. Like if some super minor character had a bigger role in tmagp. Or not even a bigger role they just have a single incident report and that's all.

I just think it would be fun. Like, Nathan Watts saw something Vast happen and reported it. Or Siobhan Dobson, sister of Ashley Dobson who was presumably taken by the Anglerfish. Just a really minor cameo for a really minor character

Most people who have even been casually watching movies at some point between the mid-80s and today would at least recognize Tom Hanks if they saw him in a movie, whether they know him by name or not. His movies have grossed over $9.9 billion in North America alone, which makes him the fourth-highest grossing actor in history. I’ve looked at several of his movies already, including Saving Private…

For Day 2 of the @a-mag-a-day event, Statement 1: Anglerfish (I was going to send an ask but this got way too long so I’m making my own post.)

I want to focus on Jon and specifically on the way Jon structures the statement recordings.

I just started taking a management course, and since it’s going to involve reading articles and writing essays, as part of our introductory materials we got this description of reflective writing in a research writing style:

“First, identity the most pertinent points from your reading. Make reference to this reading by quoting the original text/author and support this research using examples from your own experience if the question requires. A reflective piece of writing should describe 1. what happened, 2. a consideration of possible factors influencing the process, 3. the outcome, and 4. a ‘take away’ factor.

And I realized that, with his Research background, this is exactly how Jon structures his recordings of statements.

Jon starts by giving the listener the most pertinent information—who gave the statement, what the statement is about, and when it was given: “Statement of Nathan Watts, regarding an encounter on Old Fishmarket Close, Edinburgh. Original statement given April 22nd 2012.”

Next he describes what happened, recording the statement in full exactly as it was written.

Afterwards, he reflects on the statement following the reflective structure:

1. He describes the outcome of the statement, as well as all facts about what actually happened, as far as the research team could determine: “The investigation at the time, and the follow-up we’ve done over the last couple of days, have found no evidence to corroborate Mr. Watts’ account of his experience. […] However, Sasha did some digging into the police reports of the time and it turns out that between 2005 and 2010, when Mr. Watts’ encounter supposedly took place, there were six disappearances in and around the Old Fishmarket Close: Jessica McEwen in November 2005, Sarah Baldwin in August 2006, Daniel Rawlings in December of the same year, then Ashley Dobson and Megan Shaw in May and June of 2008. Then finally, as Mr. Watts mentioned, John Fellowes in March 2010. All six disappearances remain unsolved.” He doesn’t do it here—likely because he doesn’t have any—but in some of the following statements Jon will mention personal experience related to the statement contents.

2. He gives a consideration of possible factors influencing the statement: “Baldwin and Shaw were definitely smokers, but there’s no evidence either way about the others, if they’re even connected.”

3. And he ends with a take-away factor: “Sasha did find one other thing, specifically in the case of Ashley Dobson. It was a copy of the last photograph taken by her phone and sent to her sister Siobhan. […] It appears to be the same alleyway which Mr. Watts described in his statement, […] and increasing the contrast appears to reveal the outline of a long, thin hand, roughly at what would be waist level on a male of average height. I find it oddly hard to shake off the impression that it’s beckoning.” The take away: the series of unsolved disappearances, combined with the photograph, mean the statement cannot be entirely dismissed.

I know people in tma fandom like to joke about Jon being bad at archiving and turning the Archives into Research 2.0, and that’s not wrong exactly, but from his description of the state of the Archives, Gertrude was even worse in terms of actual archiving:

“From where I am sitting, I can see thousands of files. Many spread loosely around the place, others crushed into unmarked boxes. A few have dates on them or helpful labels such as 86-91 G/H. Not only that, but most of these appear to be handwritten or produced on a typewriter with no accompanying digital or audio versions of any sort. In fact, I believe the first computer to ever enter this room is the laptop that I brought in today. More importantly, it seems as though little of the actual investigations have been stored in the Archives, so the only thing in most of the files are the statements themselves.”

Jon might not have all the right equipment or techniques, but at least he’s trying to organize the statements and make digital and audio copies, instead of just flinging them around or shoving them in a box. I’m also struck by the fact that Jon describes the Institute’s process of Take Statement—>Research Department Investigates—>Statement and Follow Up Report Are Archived, but then notes that most of the files he’s encountered in the Archives are missing the investigative information from the Research department. Was Gertrude not passing along statements to the Research department? Or was she taking their hard work and throwing it out? Either way, it’s small wonder Jon—insecure in his new position—tries to handle it within his team rather than send so many old statements back up to the Research department.

Jon and his team have been given a real mess to handle here, especially with no guidance or relevant prior experience. The frustration at this impossible task he’s been assigned and the minimal support he’s being given bleed into his voice despite his efforts to put on a professional front. Anyway, the reason I loved Jon starting from episode 1 is that to me he feels like someone who is completely out of his depth in a new situation and doing his best to handle it using the skills and experience he already has, while aware they are woefully inadequate.

This all happened a couple of years ago, so I apologise if some of the details are a bit off. I mean, I feel like I remember it clearly but sometimes things are so weird that you start to doubt yourself. Still, I suppose weird is kind of what you guys do, right?

So I’m studying at the University of Edinburgh. Biochemistry, specifically, and I was in my second year at the time this happened. I wasn’t in any sort of university accommodation at this point and was renting a student flat down in Southside with a few other second years. To be honest I didn’t hang out with them much. I took a gap year before matriculating and my birthday’s in the wrong part of September, so I was nearly two years older than most of my peers when I started my course. I got on with them fine, you understand, but I tended to end up hanging out with some of the older students.

That’s why I was at the party in the first place. Michael MacAulay, a good friend of mine, had just been accepted to do a Master’s degree in Earth Sciences so we decided a celebration was in order. Well, maybe ‘party’ isn’t quite the right word, we just kind of invaded the Albanach down on the Royal Mile and drank long enough and loud enough that eventually we had the back area to ourselves. Now, I don’t know how well you know the drinking holes of Edinburgh, but the Albanach has a wide selection of some excellent single malts, and I may have slightly overindulged. I have vague memories of Mike suggesting I slow down, to which I responded by roundly swearing at him for failing to properly celebrate his own good news. Or words to that effect.

Long story short, I was violently ill around midnight and made the decision to walk the route home. It wasn’t far to my flat, maybe half an hour if I’d been sober, and the night was cool enough that I remember having a hope the chill would perk me up some. I headed for the Cowgate and the quickest way to get there from the Royal Mile is down Old Fishmarket Close. Now, I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that there are some steep hills in Edinburgh but Old Fishmarket Close is exceptional, even by those standards. At times it must reach a thirty or forty degree angle, which is hard enough to navigate when you don’t have that much scotch inside you. As I have mentioned, I had quite a lot, so it probably wasn’t that surprising when I took a rather nasty tumble about halfway down the street. In retrospect the fall wasn’t that bad compared to what it could have been, but at the time it really shook me up and left me with some nasty bruises. I picked myself up as best I could, checked I hadn’t seriously injured myself, no broken bones or anything, and decided to roll a cigarette to calm myself. That was when I heard it.

“Can I have a cigarette?”

I was startled out of my thoughts by the words as I thought I had been alone. Quickly trying to compose myself and looking around, I noticed a small alleyway on the opposite side of the street. It was very narrow and completely unlit with a short staircase leading up. I could see a light fixture a little way up the wall at its entrance, but it either wasn’t working or wasn’t turned on, meaning that beyond a few steps the alley was shrouded in total darkness. Stood there, a couple of stairs from the street, was a figure. It was hard to tell much about them as they were mostly in the shadows, though if I’d had to guess I would have said the voice sounded male. They seemed to sway, ever so slightly, as I watched, and I assumed that they, like me, were probably a little bit drunk.

I lit my own cigarette and held out my tobacco towards them, though I didn’t approach, and asked if they were ok with a roll-up. The figure didn’t move except to continue that gentle swaying. Writing it down now, it seems so obvious that something was wrong. If I hadn’t been so drunk maybe I’d have noticed quicker, but even when the stranger asked the question again, “Can I have a cigarette?” utterly without intonation, still I didn’t understand why I was so uneasy.

I stared at the stranger and as my eyes began to adjust I could make out more details. I could see that their face appeared blank, expressionless, and their skin seemed damp and slightly sunken, like they had a bad fever. The swaying was more pronounced now, seeming to move from the waist, side to side, back and forth. By this point I had finished rolling a second cigarette and gingerly held it out towards them, but I didn’t get any closer. I had decided that if this weirdo wanted a cigarette, they were going to need to come out of the creepy alleyway. They didn’t come closer, didn’t make any movement at all except for that damn swaying. For some reason the thought of an anglerfish popped into my head, the single point of light dangled into the darkness, hiding the thing that lures you in.

“Can I have a cigarette?” It spoke again in the same flat voice and I realised exactly what was wrong. Its mouth was closed, had been the whole time. Whatever was repeating that question, it wasn’t the figure in the alleyway. I looked at their feet and saw that they weren’t quite touching the ground. The stranger’s form was being lifted, ever so slightly, and moved gently from side to side.

I dropped the cigarette and grabbed for my phone, trying to turn on the torch. I don’t know why I didn’t run or what I hoped to see in that alley, but I wanted to get a better look. As soon as I took out my phone, the figure disappeared. It sort of folded at the waist and vanished back into the darkness, as if a string had gone taut and pulled it back. I turned on the torch and stared into the alley, but I saw nothing. Just silence and darkness. I staggered back up to the Royal Mile, which still had lights and people, and found a taxi to take me home.

I slept late the next day. I’d made sure I didn’t have any lectures or classes, as I had intended to be sleeping off a heavy night of drinking, which I guess I was, although it was that bizarre encounter that kept playing in my mind. And so, after making my way through two litres of water, some painkillers and a very greasy breakfast, I felt human enough to leave my flat and go to investigate the place in daylight. The result was unenlightening. There were no marks, no bloodstains, nothing to indicate that the swaying figure had ever been there at all. The only thing I did find was an unsmoked Marlboro Red cigarette, lying just below the burned out light fixture. 

Beyond that, I didn’t really know what to do. I did as much research as I could on the place, but couldn’t find anyone who’d had any experience similar to mine, and there didn’t seem to be any folklore or urban legends I could find out about Old Fishmarket Close. The few friends I told about what happened just assumed I’d been accosted by some stranger and the alcohol had made it seem much weirder than it was. I tried to explain that I’ve never had hallucinations while drunk, and that there was no way this guy had just been a normal person, but they always gave me one of those looks, halfway between pity and concern, and I’d shut up.

I never did find out anything else about it, but a few days later I saw some missing person appeals go up around campus. Another student had disappeared. John Fellowes, his name was, though I didn’t really know the guy and couldn’t tell you much about him, except for two things that struck me as very important: he had been at that same party and, as far as I remembered, had still been there when I left. The other was just that, well, on the photo they’d used for his missing persons appeal I couldn’t help but notice that there was a pack of Marlboro Red cigarettes poking out of his pocket.

I haven’t quit smoking, but I do find that I take a lot more taxis now if I find myself out too late.

Archivist Notes: 

The investigation at the time, and the follow-up we’ve done over the last couple have days, have found no evidence to corroborate Mr. Watts’ account of his experience. I was initially inclined to re-file this statement in the ‘Discredited’ section of the Archive, a new category I’ve created that will, I suspect, be housing the majority of these files. However, Sasha did some digging into the police reports of the time and it turns out that between 2005 and 2010, when Mr Watts’ encounter supposedly took place, there were six disappearances in and around the Old Fishmarket Close: Jessica McEwen in November 2005, Sarah Baldwin in August 2006, Daniel Rawlings in December of the same year, then Ashley Dobson and Megan Shaw in May and June of 2008. Then finally, as Mr Watts mentioned, John Fellowes in March 2010. All six disappearances remain unsolved. Baldwin and Shaw were definitely smokers, but there’s no evidence either way about the others, if they’re even connected.

Sasha did find one other thing, specifically in the case of Ashley Dobson. It was a copy of the last photograph taken by her phone and sent to her sister Siobhan. The caption was “check out this drunk creeper lol”, but the picture is of a darkened, apparently empty, alleyway, with stairs leading up into it. It appears to be the same alleyway which Mr. Watts described in his statement, the one that, according to the maps of the area, leads to Tron Square, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone in the photograph at all. Sasha took the liberty of running it through some editing programs, though, and increasing the contrast appears to reveals the outline of a long, thin hand, roughly at what would be waist level on a male of average height. I find it oddly hard to shake off the impression that it’s beckoning.

Mag 1: Anglerfish

The Magnus Institute, London, was created in 1818, it is an organisation dedicated to the research of the esoteric and the paranormal. Having been created so long ago, the institute has over 200 years of case files. 

Mentioned Characters:

Jonathan Sims: he works for the Magnus institute, replacing the previous Head Archivist. He’d been working as a researcher for four years and seems to be a bit sceptic, which is bizarre considering his line of work.

Cigarette Fish Monster: It sits in the dark of the night and beckons drunken passersby to give it cigarettes. When they do, they’re never seen again. It was said to be reminding of an Anglerfish. The bait, a man, has a blank expressionless face. Its skin seems damp, sunken, and fevered. It sways from side to side as its feet don’t touch the floor. Whatever stands behind the bait we don’t know.

What happened:

After a peculiarly drunken evening to celebrate a friends’ graduation, Mr Watts felt ill and decided to walk home. On his way, he fell down a hill and got quite bruised and scratched up. After checking for serious injuries, he got up and rolled himself a cigarette to get over his strong emotions.

A voice came out of the dark and asked: “Can I have a cigarette?” The person who asked was in a small alleyway on the opposite side of a dark street with a broken light fixture. They sounded male and seemed to sway slightly.

Mr Watts lit his cigarette and rolled a second one for the stranger but didn’t approach. Eyes adjusting to the dark, he began to see more feature of the obviously inhuman creature in front of him. He went to grab his phone to see what the creature was after it asked for a cigarette for the third time. The creature disappeared before he could turn the flash on, sort of folded at the waist.

He staggered home and returned to inspect the previous night’s events the next day. All he found was an unsmoked Marlborough Red lying on the ground. A few days later, missing person posters of a boy who’d also been at the party started to show up. He had a packet of Marlborough Red cigarettes in his pocket on the missing person poster.

After “Statement ends”:

-There is no evidence to corroborate Mr Watt’s statement, Mr Sims would have put it in the discredited section had it not been for Sasha. Well done Researcher you get a cookie!

Home to Ireland for Xmas

As our ferry made its way across the Irish Sea on Dec 24th, I rehearsed my answers for the RTE news reporter I felt certain would be waiting to ask us how it felt to step back onto Irish soil.  My conclusion was based on our national broadcaster’s tradition on Xmas week of sending news crews to the country's international transport terminals to capture the tearful reunions of emigrants with their families for transmittal as the Six One News feel-good item. That's the item at the end of the news after all of the distressing stories that's supposed to lift your spirits. As an Irish emigrant, I understand that my role in our national drama is to spend every waking moment regretting my decision to leave and, as a mark of respect for my country, I avoid any kind of happiness that comes my way while abroad. Grateful for my good fortune of being born in Eire, I was excited that finally I might have my personage used by RTE to inform other young people of their civic obligations in this regard. "It's so great to be back home" I annunciated brightly into the mirror of the ship’s ladies toilets with as much relief as I could muster.  My make up looked lop-sided but considering it was being applied at sea that was to be expected. I dropped to my hands and knees and collected the cosmetics that had fallen on the floor as they rolled from left to right and back again. "The thing I miss most about Ireland, Brian? Why Cheese & Onion Taytos of course" I said, this time adding a giggle for effect. And there may well have been some truth in this statement. For all I know I could miss Cheese & Onion Taytos. I can't say for sure though as my psyche has been so bombarded by national rhetoric like "Top Ten Things People Miss Most About Ireland" of late that I haven't had an original thought or feeling about Ireland in nearly a decade. Online compilation articles have become so ubiquitous that moments of personal discovery now are no longer possible. I emerged to the large flourescent-lit seating area. Amongst the families, truckers and backpackers, a familiar face caught my eye. It was my friend Siobhan. We had been attempting to meet for the past few a months but time had eluded us. Now, as if to mock our supposedly busy lifestyles, here we were face to face. “How does my makeup look?” I ask her. “You look like I painted you” she replied. Damn it. Siobhan is a brilliant painter whose work is fast gaining the respect of the cultural elite of east London. Her representation of the human form however is more “Punch and Judy” than “RTE Six One News”. "What time did you tell your folks to come to collect you?" Siobhan asked as the boat began to moor. Whoops! In my excitement about coming home I had forgotten to tell anyone that I needed collecting from the port. Now whose arms would I fall into as I wept at being back in my country? At this late stage there was no possibility of letting them know either. The batteries of all of the electronic devices I own were long since dead which is irrelevant anyway because the ships wifi wasn't strong enough to sustain connection with so many passengers . The Rail and Sail option from London to Dublin Port asks what it is to be human as well as any Cormac McCarthy novel. On disembarking, while Siobhan went to collect some bubble-wrapped canvases from the baggage carousel I found the nearest Dublin Port official and asked her "Can you tell me where Brian Dobson is? He'll want to interview us for the news". It was as if she had no idea what I was talking about. Reasoning that he must be outside, I ventured through the automatic doors and breathed in the dark Irish night. To my disappointment, no microphone was pushed into my face. My heart sank as I considered that I might not get the opportunity to be one of Ireland's Xmas heroes this year. They just weren't there. Then, as if to further deny our existence, there were no taxis waiting either. Two double decker Dublin buses were the full extent of public transport provided to help us returning emigrants continue our journey. Furthermore, the bus would only stop at Heuston or Busaras, the opposite direction to which I was headed. It was for this reason and the slim hope of encountering a lost news camera that I persuaded Siobhan, also without a welcoming committee,  to attempt to walk with me from the ferry terminal to the entrance of Dublin port. Pulling our suitcases behind us we wobbled forward in the dark. As our legs acclimatised to being on land again, articulated trucks driving towards the next sailing splashed road water in our faces. Gravel from the unlit road stuck in the wheels of our suitcase slowing us down. A deceptively wet shower of rain spat on us stealthily drenching our clothes. I loved every second of it. “I am home!! Oh Ireland how I have missed you” I cried into the cold Dublin wind. My mood changed however when the headlights of an oncoming car illuminated a particular pebble on the road. To the untrained eye this might go unnoticed. However I happen to be in the habit of cataloging  pebbles and as such there isn't a stone on this island that I am not familiar with. This one was no different. Sharp-edged on one side, it had ruined a walk on Sandymount beach for me about a year previous by making its way into my shoe. I burst into tears. "What's wrong Eleanor?" Siobhan asked. "I know that stone. It used to be in another part of Dublin. Ireland is changing and we are missing out by living abroad” I said.  Siobhan shrugged. All I could do was take comfort in the familiar by reaching down, picking up the stone and putting it back into my shoe. Hours later our progress came to a halt when we were confronted by a chainlink fence that stretched as far left and right as our eyes could see. With no sign of an RTE news camera we elected to abandon our attempts to make it home that night. We set up camp underneath a large overhead crane using Siobhan's paintings to break the wind against us. Uncomfortable as it was, disgust at my own failed attempts at patriotism was all I could think about that night. It was only when I managed to start a fire using stray lumps of coal i found around the dock that sleep was possible. Someone must have informed Santa Claus of our whereabouts because the next morning we awoke to find that gifts had been laid out for us. For Siobhan the man from Lapland had left a DVD of Conor McGregor’s greatest knockouts. For me, a copy of the English textbook Soundings that I had studied in school. Unfortunately however this stirred a nostalgia in me so strong that I worked myself into another state of emotional hysteria. The source of my angst this time was how everything we encounter as adults seems tainted by a disgraceful sexual energy. “For the love of God, I just want to be clean” I howled, throwing myself off a harbour wall into the Liffey. After eventually admitting the impossibility of scrubbing adulthood off oneself I emerged from the water to find Siobhan cooking Xmas dinner. She was using her creative talent to roast a discarded Ballygowan water drum in a functioning kiln lying nearby. Then when the clear blue plasticky soup had cooled sufficiently we transferred it into our mouths by dipping our toothbrushes in and sucking it off. As darkness fell our hearts leapt as we noticed as a shadowy figure approaching us. "May god help us" I thought until the light from the fire fell on his face revealing that it was none other than Minister for Jobs Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton.  Starstruck, I ran towards him. “Minister may I be the first to say  thanks ever so much for your efforts to create jobs so we poor emigrants can end our hell of living abroad. If you do manage to create any jobs I'll be home in a flash. Only a madman would stay abroad if they had a job in Ireland to go back to”. “And may I be the first to thank you for your patience. Living abroad is cruel state for any Irish person to find themselves in” he said with a statesman-like air. “Oh it is” I said “integrated public transport systems, abortion rights, increased entertainment options. Between myself and yourself minister, I swear some of those desperate creatures don't even know who Richie Kavanagh is”. I took out the copy of Philip Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that I keep in case of emergency and a box of matches and set it on fire to make my point. We bid him good evening. That night I drifted off to sleep with my clothes drying on the kiln, promising myself that the next day would be more productive. It wasn't to be however. The next morning our sleep was broken by a loud foghorn announcing the arrival of the 8:15 sailing from Dublin to Holyhead. Directly in front of us the gangway led aboard the ship. I'm not proud of this but the lure of albeit poor wifi was too much for us. Ticketless, we traitors gathered our belongings and climbed aboard unseen, utter failures as both celebrators of Christmas and Irish patriots. Oh how we gorged ourselves on plates of carvery dinner while the ship barrelled through the beginnings of Storm Frank! In our defence however we did take the opportunity as two of the only passengers on board to get ahead of the posse and book our tickets home for Christmas 2016. This year nothing will be left to chance. Our tickets home are via airplane. Ireland, this time we won't let you down.

I was initially inclined to re-file this statement in the ‘Discredited’ section of the Archive, a new category I’ve created that will, I suspect, be housing the majority of these files.

However, Sasha did some digging into the police reports of the time and it turns out that between 2005 and 2010, when Mr Watts’ encounter supposedly took place, there were six disappearances in and around the Old Fishmarket Close: Jessica McEwen in November 2005, Sarah Baldwin in August 2006, Daniel Rawlings in December of the same year, then Ashley Dobson and Megan Shaw in May and June of 2008. Then finally, as Mr Watts mentioned, John Fellowes in March 2010. All six disappearances remain unsolved.

Baldwin and Shaw were definitely smokers, but there’s no evidence either way about the others, if they’re even connected. Sasha did find one other thing, specifically in the case of Ashley Dobson. It was a copy of the last photograph taken by her phone and sent to her sister Siobhan. The caption was “check out this drunk creeper lol”, but the picture is of a darkened, apparently empty, alleyway, with stairs leading up into it.

It appears to be the same alleyway which Mr. Watts described in his statement, the one that, according to the maps of the area, leads to Tron Square, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone in the photograph at all. Sasha took the liberty of running it through some editing programs, though, and increasing the contrast appears to reveals the outline of a long, thin hand, roughly at what would be waist level on a male of average height. I find it oddly hard to shake off the impression that it’s beckoning.
