“Venmo finally gets the message that maximum advertising for a financial app is a terrible idea,” says Kaili Lambe, a senior activist at the Mozilla Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on openness and Internet accessibility. “However, from the beginning we’ve asked Venmo to be private by default, because a lot of Venmo users don’t really know that their transactions are public to the world.”

A Venmo spokesman said the company has no plans at this time to consider private transactions by default. This means that users will still have to do their best to ensure that all peer-to-peer transactions are not transmitted to the rest of the world. It is difficult to see the advantage of maintaining the status quo.

“Think of a lot of very sensitive use cases,” Gebhart says. “You think of therapists, you think of sex workers. Think of the President of the United States. It doesn’t take much imagination to imagine places where these defaults could be terribly wrong and cause real harm to real people. “

The implications of Venmo’s default stance have been played out beyond the discovery of Biden’s account. In 2018, privacy lawyer and designer Hang Do Thi Duc used Venmo’s public API to do so order about 208 million transactions on the platform, coming together alarmingly detailed portraits of five users based solely on their activity in the app. The following year, programmer Dan Salmon wrote a 20-line Python script that scratches millions of Venmo payments in a matter of weeks.

Venmo has since imposed restrictions on the speed at which you can access transaction data through the public API, but Salmon says the company hasn’t gone far enough. “Venmo basically had a connection device to which I could connect with transaction data,” he says. “Now that this is cut, transactions are still out; it will only take a few more steps to get them. ”He says it would take about an hour of work to build a new scraping tool.

“At Venmo, we routinely evaluate our technical protocols as part of our commitment to platform security and continuously improve Venmo’s experience for our customers. Scraping Venmo is a violation of our terms of service and we are actively working to limit and block activities that violate these policies, “Venmo spokesman Jaymie Sinlao said in an emailed statement.” We continue to enable access. select from our existing APIs so that approved developers can continue to innovate and leverage the Venmo platform. “

Venmo is far from the only app that makes you turn off sharing instead of actively seeking it out. But because its use case is exclusively financial, the stakes are significantly higher and the assumption of its users may be out of place. Venmo itself has not made it especially easy for users to know what they are sharing or not; in 2018 reached an agreement with the Federal Trade Commissions related in part to its confusing privacy settings.

“Anecdotally, people are surprised to see that a financial services app is public by default,” says Lambe of the Mozilla Foundation. “Even people who use Venmo for years may not know that its configuration is public.”

To make sure yours doesn’t move forward, go to Settings> Privacy and select Private. Then tap Previous transactionsand tap Change everything to private to block things retroactively. And while you’re at it, tap Friends listand then tap Private and turn it off Appears in other users’ friends list. Otherwise, share the digital equivalent of your credit card purchases with everyone you know and many people you don’t. Or consider using something like the Square Cash app, which is private by default.

The loss of global feed is an important step towards privacy for Venmo and its users. Hopefully, there are still more steps left.

Xoom Rolls Out Domestic Money Transfer Services in the U.S.

 Xoom, PayPal’s international money transfer service, today rolled out the ability for customers to send money to recipients in the U.S. for the first time. Through strategic alliances with Walmart and Ria, Americans can now use Xoom to send money fast for cash pick-up typically in minutes at nearly 5,000 locations across the country*.
