Today marks the 1st day (of 3 days) of the Lao/Thai/Cambodian/Burmese New Year, a very special time of new beginnings according to the Buddhist solar calendar. This is probably the most special month for many of us Southeast Asians and I wanted to showcase things that are a huge part of our culture, and to wish you all good luck in the new year... -👘 our traditional brocade sinh (skirt) and pha bieng (shawl), comes in all colors of the 🌈 rainbow. -🍚 rattan rice baskets for offerings. -⚱️ alms offering bowl, often in gold metal or silver. The one shown is a brass lotus bowl that is listed in my shop. -🙏🏽 the hands represent the grace and dance of traditional Lao dancers. -🌼 flowers, water, and white candles, integral to ceremonial rituals -🐘🐘🐘 three elephants, a representation of our culture and country of Lan Xang (million elephants). - 🙏🏽 and of course, our Buddhist faith . To new beginnings, renewed sense of good health and well being, and for love and light to each and every one of you. Our New Year is also called the Water festival. Water is used during our ceremonies as a way to cleanse, bless, and purify. This may be my kids' favorite part of the rituals. 💦 Which makes me want to end the night reflecting on this past week... my boys were home for spring break, my family came to visit from TN, and there was so much to celebrate. I'm sad that this week is over but I'm eager to begin this week (and Year) with a renewed sense of love and purpose. Happy Easter & happy new year!
