You Don't Have to Be Okay
Sam Winchester x Reader
Summary: Sam has trouble coping with his nightmares. She helps him.
Rating: PG-13
A/N: This made me cry while writing. Enjoy!
▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣▣
It was gradual.
She noticed how tired Sam was all of the time. She blamed it on the usual stress of hunting. After a few months she begins to notice how it's every single time she sees him. It's almost like he never has the chance to sleep.
She mentions it to Dean, who tells her that Sam's handling things just fine. She doesn't agree.
During a hunt that Sam was doing with her, she noticed the nightmares. She would ask him about it the next day, or offer to grab coffee whenever he woke up in a cold sweat. The results were the same every single time. He would brush off her concern, just like Dean had.
She was a light sleeper, an occupational hazard. It was the last night at the piece of shit hotel with Sam. She awoke to the sound of mumbling and someone thrashing around. Her hand went to the hilt of the knife hidden between the bed and the dresser. Once her weapon was safely in her hands she flicked on the lamp.
Her eyes scanned the room. It had just been Sam. She sighed, dropping the knife on the little dresser. She stood and sat on the edge of Sam's bed. She didn't want to wake him but the pained mumbles slipping past his lips, and his horrified expression made her.
She was careful, knowing he would be frightened and disoriented whenever he woke up. She shook his shoulders, making sure to be ready for whenever he would wake up. He sat up, looking like he had seen a ghost. She gently grabbed his wrists whenever his fists went flying.
He blinked a few times, realizing where he was. And who he had almost punched.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Shit," He quickly apologized. His expression still held the same horrified look. It broke her heart to see him like this.
She gave him a soft smile and let go of his wrists. He ran his fingers through his hair as he tried to fix all of the pieces sticking in every direction. She was patient, letting him wake up a bit more. She wouldn't start prying whenever he was this disoriented.
"It's okay," She said, placing a hand on his knee.
"No, it's not!" Sam replied, visibly distraught. He could have punched her. All for trying to help him.
"Is it about Jess?" She blurted. She wanted to help. Maybe if he talked about it, maybe she could help him. Seeing him suffer like this was painful. It hurt seeing such a close friend in pain.
Her father was a hunter too. She had grown up around the Winchester boys. She had always been good friends with both of, especially Sam. The two were close, well, as close as they could be with the lifestyle they led.
". . . Yeah, it is," Sam replied softly, looking down at his hands. He could not bring himself to meet her gaze. Not with the way he felt tears stinging his eyes. He didn't want her to see him like this.
"I'm here, and I'll listen. I'll do whatever you need me to do," She said.
Sam sniffled. He finally moved his gaze from his hands and looked at her as a tear finally spilled down his cheek. He didn't understand why she cared so much. Sure, they were friends. He didn't feel like he deserved this though.
"You can't bring her back. You can't stop her from getting burned on the god-damn ceiling just because I left her."
His words made her do a double take. She had known that his girlfriend's death had been horrific, and had involved a fire. She hadn't realized just how truly horrible it had been.
"No, I can't. But, I can help you," She said softly, brushing a tear off his cheek.
She wrapped her arms around him. He shuddered under her touch. He was too exhausted, in more than one way. He couldn't resist the comfort of her arms. He buried his head in her neck and let the tears fall.
She might not be able to save Jess from the horrible fate she had met, but she could help Sam. The poor boy needed it. The nightmares might only be about Jess, and that horrible night, but the scars hunting left on him went deeper than his skin. He felt them branded into his soul. Horrible memories waiting to punish him again.
He was more sensitive than Dean and his father. He never truly got over those things. He thought about them all of the time. It was like he couldn't escape. Walking down the street he would see someone who reminded him of a person he couldn't save. It was always something.
Maybe she really could help.
He clung to her even tighter, grateful for her silent comfort. Once the tears dried up, and he felt like he would never be able to cry again, he pulled away. He awkwardly rubbed at his tear stained cheeks.
"Thank you," He said softly, hating how weak his voice sounded.
"You don't need to thank me."

CoD Military Realism References
UPDATED 05JUL24
For those of you who want to take your fic writing realism (or general military knowledge) to the next level, here is a compilation of real-world, declassified military documents ranging from field manuals to military academy graduate theses all pulled from the Internet Archive. If you're looking for something specific, I highly recommend browsing through their military collection, as they have handbooks on every military topic imaginable, including specific weapons and military operations.
All of these are incredibly outdated because all of the in-date stuff is still classified. That being said, some of these are more outdated than others. Use them at your own discretion and don’t feel obligated to make every detail of your fic entirely accurate. Fic writing is supposed to be fun for everyone involved. Don’t let the real world intricacies of the military distract you from making those military men kiss sloppy style 🖤
The resources that I personally find most useful are highlighted in blue but all of them have lots of valuable information. Read at your own discretion; the vast majority of these are official military documents and could contain shocking/triggering details.
General:
Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (DoD, 2001)
Good for looking up military jargon you don't know
Acronyms: pgs 488-606
Dictionary of United States Military Terms for Joint Usage (DoD, 1950)
Basic Training and Care of Military Dogs (US Army, 1972)
Military Working Dogs (US Army, 2005)
Good for any fics including our bestest boy (Riley)
Includes overview of training, administrative details, various jobs, and vet support for military dogs
Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad (US Army, 1992)
provides doctrine, tactics, techniques and procedures on how infantry rifle platoons and squads fight
chapters covering doctrine, tactics, techniques and procedures, and includes a tactical standing operating procedure
State, Official, and Special Military Funerals (US Armed Forces, 1965)
Handbook for Next of Kin of Army Prisoners of War / Missing Personnel (US Army, 1972)
designed to provide important information in limited detail to the next of kin of missing and captured members in order to promote a better understanding of Department of the Army policies and procedures
unfortunately relevant for our favorite sudsy sergeant and his family :(
Communication:
Hand Signals
Radio Operator's Handbook (US Marine Corps)
Chock full of jargon and technical details that will unfailingly make you sound like you actually work with radio tech
Not recommended for anyone looking for a general overview
Tactical Single Channel Radio Communications Techniques (US Army, 1987)
See above
Combat Skills:
Combat Skills of the Soldier (US Army, 1984)
tells the soldier how to perform the combat skills needed to survive on the battlefield. These are basic skills that must be learned by soldiers in all military occupational specialties (MOS)
Great overview of camouflage, fighting positions, movement, communications, first aid, etc.
Hand to Hand Combat (US Marine Corps)
A little goofy but hey, hand to hand combat stays relevant, no matter how old the information is
Combat Training with Pistols and Revolvers (US Army, 1988)
Close Combat (US Marine Corps, 1999)
provides the tactics, techniques, and procedures of Marine Corps close combat
provides both the lethal and nonlethal close combat techniques needed to handle the situation responsibly without escalating the violence unnecessarily
Explosives and Demolitions (US Army, 2007)
the reference manual for explosives and demolitions procedures that support combat operations, as well as, peacetime training missions requiring demolition applications
Soap's favorite document (he'd probably know it front to back)
You know it's good when the table of contents is almost 20 pages long...
Camouflage, Concealment, and Decoys (US Army, 1999)
intended to help company-level leaders understand the principles and techniques of camouflage, concealment, and decoys (CCD)
Military Diving (US Army, 1999)
Likely the longest resource on this list
Incredibly in-depth; probably only useful if you're writing an entire mission underwater or involving serious diving
Combat Diving (Canadian National Defense, 2002)
contains the information required for the planning and execution of combat diving operations
A far more accessible resource for diving information than the Army diving manual (the Canadians know how to be succinct lmao)
Night Combat - Historical Study (Center of Military History, US Army, 1986)
Scouting and Patrolling (US Marine Corps, 2000)
provides the doctrinal foundation and the tactics, techniques, and procedures for scouting and patrolling from the fire team to the company level. Although the information focuses on infantry units, much of the information is also applicable to combat support units that are assigned patrolling missions
Officers:
Staff Duties in the Field (Canadian National Defense, 1995)
describes procedures for staff work prepared in support of field training exercises and for the planning and conduct of land force operations
Notes for Officers and NCOs on Methods of Instruction (School of Infantry, 1946)
A really cool teaching manual for officers and NCOs who are in charge of instructing new recruits. Doesn't outline what to teach so much as how to teach it
Army Non Commissioned Officer’s Guide (Us Army, 2002)
provides noncommissioned officers a guide for leading, supervising and caring for soldiers. While not all-inclusive nor intended as a stand-alone document, the guide offers NCOs a ready reference for most situations
people always forget that Soap and Gaz are leaders in their own right, with soldiers of their own to command (or at least they would've before joining the 141). This is an excellent guide for how they would act in a leadership position
Commander’s Tactical Handbook (US Marine Corps, 1988)
contains reference material frequently used to organize, plan, and conduct Marine ground combat operations. Its intent is to assist small unit leaders functioning at the company level and below, but it also serves as a field reference guide for all Marine leaders
Intelligence Officer's Handbook (US Army, 1998)
Probably not really relevant for anyone's fics; the 141 doesn't work in intelligence, and this handbook is for specific units within the US Army. An interesting read, though
Types of Operations:
Terrain:
Mountain Operations (Canadian National Defense, 1976)
Combat in Built-Up Areas (US Army, 1992)
Desert Operations (US Army, 1993)
Jungle Operations (Canadian National Defense, 1978)
Ground Combat Operations (US Marine Corps, 2002)
provides the doctrinal basis for the planning and execution of ground combat operations for ground forces
River Crossing Operations (US Army, US Marine Corps, 1998)
Mountain Operations (US Army, 2000)
Training for Urban Operations (US Army, 2002)
Guerrilla Warfare Tactics in Urban Environments Master's Thesis (US Army, 2003)
Not really an urban environment guide; explores whether or not the US Army needs better guidelines for urban warfare tactics
Other:
Guerrilla Warfare and Special Forces Operations (US Army, 1961)
Kill or Get Killed: Riot Control, Techniques, Manhandling, and Close Combat for Police and the Military (US Marine Corps, 1991)
Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Operations (US Marine Corps, 1998)
Doctrine for Special Forces Operations (US Army, 1990)
Raid Operations (US Marine Corps, 2002)
Land Force Information Operations (Canadian National Defense, 1999)
describes a multidimensional concept used by the Army to achieve success across the continuum of operations. Information Operations (lO) is an essential combat function that must be integrated with the remainder of the combat functions to maximize combat power
describes the concept in detail, and outlines how lO relates to other combat functions and contributes to the success of commanders on the battlefield
Scout Platoon (US Army, 1999)
describes how the scout platoon conducts its primary missions, reconnaissance and security
focuses on the principles of platoon operations and on the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) the platoon uses to acquire information and provide security and protection for other units on the battlefield
covers a variety of supporting tasks and operations the platoon must perform or coordinate, either as part of its reconnaissance and security missions or as assigned by the commander
Engineer Reconnaissance (US Army, 1998)
Operations in a Low Intensity Conflict (US Army, 1992)
provides tactical-level guidance to brigade and battalion commanders and staff officers for planning, controlling, and coordinating combined arms operations in a low-intensity environment
focuses on tactical units' tasks and missions across the operational continuum just short of declared war
Counterguerrilla Operations (US Army, 1986)
Counterinsurgency Operations (US Marine Corps, 2004)
Medical/Survival:
Basic Medical Information:
Basic Medical Terminology (US Army)

Map Reading and Land Navigation (US Army, 2001)
Survival, Evasion, and Recovery (US Armed Forces, 1999)
A really cool survival guide; recommended read for anyone
chock full of fun and useful acronyms
What to Expect if You Get Shot
Finding Your Direction When Lost
Medical Aspects of Chemical and Biological Warfare (US Army, 1997)
Medical Evacuation in a Theater of Operations (US Army, 2000)
provides the philosophy of and doctrine for medical evacuation in a theater of operations (TO)
Tactics, techniques, and procedures for accomplishing the medical evacuation of sick, injured, or wounded soldiers are included
Environmental Injuries: Snakebite, Arthropod Bite/Sting, Plant Contact, Heat/Cold Injury (US Army)
Snipers:
Sniper Training (US Army, 1994)
The best sniper reference on the list
Not necessarily up-to-date but provides an excellent overview of every aspect of sniping, including equipment, ammunition, marksmanship, the effects of weather, field techniques, sniper positions, observation, mission prep, communications, tracking, etc
Sniper Training Program (US Navy SEALs)
Modern Snipers (2016)
Counter Sniper Guide (US Army)
Regardless of what we may call him, the individual who is shooting at police, firemen, soldiers or citizens is certainly dangerous. In order to counteract, we must employ a trained individual whose knowledge and skill fall within the dictionary description of a sniper, whom we shall refer to throughout the manual as a COUNTERSNIPER

Fic: Dead Men Take No Dares
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Characters: Izzy Hands, Edward Teach, Stede Bonnet, Lucius Springs, Ivan, Fang, Nathaniel Buttons, Crew of the Revenge
Relationships: Izzy Hands & Edward Teach, Izzy Hands & Crew of the Revenge, Izzy Hands & Ivan & Fang
Rating: PG-13/Teen
Content/Warnings: Truth or Dare, friendship (existing, mending, and growing), humor, and a callback to one of my favorite jokes from Season 1
Summary: “Fun, huh?” He breathed in and out once very deliberately then opened his eyes to look at Fang, face carefully neutral. “All right. I can do fun.”
--
Izzy is strong-armed into a game of Truth or Dare and decides to play by the rules.
Notes: Written for the zine Above All Else: An Appreciation of Izzy Hands in 2023 and set in a possible post-Season 1 future where everyone is trying to get along and no one is very good at it. (Except Fang, of course.) Written before the premiere of Season 2 and has not been edited to reflect any of that updated canon. The only difference between this text and what appears in the zine is the correction of three minor grammatical errors that will haunt me for the rest of my natural life.
Word Count: 1368
Read on AO3

Israel Hands was seven minutes and fifteen seconds into his frantic search for his captains or, indeed, any sign of life on the Revenge, when he finally heard Bonnet's voice ring through the halls of the gundeck.
“All right! Perhaps we ought to revisit and revise our ‘no more than two truths before a dare’ rule to ‘at least two truths before a dare.’”
The conversation was coming from the jam room, and Izzy hastened his steps in that direction, taking note of each voice that joined in.
“But then we’d barely get any dares!” Black Pete whined.
“I’m fine with that.” That was Spriggs, vaguely distressed as always. “I’m great.”
“Uh, it’s not Truth or Dare without any dares.” Black Pete again.
“Maybe that can just be a rule for Captain Ed and Wee John.” Roach then.
“Sorry about that,” Feeney said at the same time that Edward chirped, “Sorry, mate,” neither sounding particularly sorry at all. Was the whole fucking crew in there?
“Now, we don’t want to single anyone out...” Bonnet waffled--prompting a small chorus of “Yes, we do”--just as Izzy stepped through the door.
“Captain... s?” he asked, catching himself before he forgot to pluralize. He looked first to Edward then to Bonnet, taking in the room’s remaining occupants in between. It was, of course, the whole fucking crew. “Wh--?”
“Hey, Iz-dog!” Edward bellowed cheerfully, springing to his feet and barrelling toward Izzy with enthusiasm he had not anticipated.
“Oh, no, Izzy’s here!” Spriggs gasped, also jumping to fling himself at Izzy.
Edward reached him first, gripping his bicep and tugging excitedly. “You’ve gotta get in on this, mate. We’re--”
“I guess we have to stop having fun now,” Spriggs’ exaggerated lamentations rose over the rest of Edward’s sentence. “So sad.” Undermining his words, he grabbed Izzy’s other shoulder and leaned in to hiss, “What took you so long? There’ve been three fires already.”
“Fire?” Izzy darted his eyes between Edward and the boy before scanning the room more thoroughly. “Where is there a fucking fi--?”
“It’s out, Boss,” Ivan announced, and Izzy whipped his head around to see him stomping out the last embers of a fucking fire.
“Why is there--?”
“In my defense,” Edward cut in, snapping Izzy’s attention back to him, bright-eyed and grinning, “I was dared.”
Izzy held Edward’s unwaveringly mischievous gaze for a moment, just in case an explanation would be offered unprompted.
It was not.
“What are you--?” he began, valiantly suppressing most of a weary sigh.
“We’re playing Truth or Dare,” Jim interrupted this time, annoyed, though whether with him or Edward, Izzy wasn’t sure. He was getting whiplash all the same.
“What the fuck is--?” But Izzy cut himself off this time with a frustrated shake of his head, a growl dying in his throat. That one he actually knew, and it wasn’t the point. “Never mind. Edward, wh--?”
“You should play, too, Iz! It’s a blast!” The implish gleam in his captain’s eyes dimmed just slightly, his smile turning sheepish. “Didn’t mean not to invite you. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing.”
That wasn’t the point. It was not within five hundred nautical miles of the fucking point. But the genuine apology in Edward’s tone took Izzy off guard all the same, stayed his tongue while he allowed himself to appreciate it.
“Oh, of course,” Bonnet butted in before Izzy could find his words again, which was marginally better than interrupting him, but that margin was about as thin as Izzy’s patience. “You can squeeze right in, we haven’t been playing long.”
“Three fires,” Spriggs mouthed silently in Izzy’s peripheral vision.
“I don’t care about your fucking game.” It came out with more bite than Izzy meant it to even if it was true. (He was trying to be less of a dick. They all were. They were bad at it, but they were trying. It just was not the point right now.) “Edward, listen. Wh--?”
“Aw, don’t be like that, Iz. Play with us!”
“Edward, I need to--”
“Join the game, and you can ask him anything you like,” Bonnet said, chipper and smug. “When it’s your turn.”
Edward squashed Izzy’s delusions that he might consider reason by immediately nodding along. “There ya go, Iz, just wait your turn.”
On second thought, fuck the both of them.
“That settles it! Have a seat, Izzy,” Bonnet continued like he didn’t even notice Izzy’s heroic attempts to explode him with his mind. “We’ll do a few rounds so you can see how the game is played.”
“I don’t--”
“And then you can have a turn!”
“Captains--”
“Just let it happen, Boss,” Ivan muttered, calm and commiserating, throwing an arm across Izzy’s back. “Come sit with me and Fang.”
Not wanting to fight because they weren’t supposed to be doing that sort of thing anymore (and because Ivan could scruff him like a cat if he chose), Izzy allowed himself to be led to the bit of floor claimed by Fang, who beamed and scooted over to make room for them.
“Hi, Izzy,” Fang greeted as Izzy sat beside him. Izzy grimaced in reply, careful not to shift his weight onto his bad foot as he settled on the floor. Ivan sat on Izzy’s other side, bracketing him between his old colleagues.
“Does anyone remember whose turn we were on?” Bonnet asked, and conversation erupted through the room, everyone talking over each other while Izzy straightened his spine and tried to catch Edward’s attention through the chaos.
“Anyone who doesn’t love arson,” Spriggs groused, flopping in defeat beside Black Pete.
“Seconding no arson,” Boodhari agreed.
Frenchie laughed. “That’s not a big number on this boat, babes.”
“May I have a turn?” The Swede raised his hand. “I will not choose fire.”
And on and on the inane chatter continued, Izzy squirming in impatience as Edward looked everywhere but at him. He was nearly ready to snap when he felt a gentle touch at his back.
“It’s not so bad, Boss,” Fang murmured kindly, giving him that soft-eyed look that Izzy never knew how to respond to since he’d promised to stop yanking his beard. “Give it a chance. Maybe you’ll have fun.”
Izzy bit the inside of his cheek before he could spit something ugly. He clenched his fists until his fingernails dug into his palms, squeezed his eyes shut until he saw stars, and tensed every muscle in his body until he had no choice but to relax.
“Fun, huh?” He breathed in and out once very deliberately then opened his eyes to look at Fang, face carefully neutral. “All right. I can do fun.”
He would wait his turn.
Fang smiled like he was proud of him, and Izzy did not tell him to fuck off. Bonnet got the game started up again, and Izzy observed the proceedings dutifully. There didn’t seem to be any sort of logic to how the turns were taken, the rules were clearly made up as they went, and the truths asked and dares accepted were as ridiculous and reckless as he would have expected. Nevertheless, he was grudgingly impressed that the Swede could contort his limbs into a pretzel with such ease.
Finally, Bonnet looked to Izzy and spread his arms out with his customarily unwarranted pomp. “Now it’s your turn, Izzy. Ask anyone anything you’d like.”
“Fine.” Izzy looked Edward straight in the eye. “Truth or Dare?”
“Truth,” Edward answered, still constrained by the new dare limit.
“Who’s steering the fucking ship, Edward?”
“The fuck do you mean? Buttons is. Right, Buttons?”
Izzy watched realization dawn in Edward's eyes, his slow, horrified turn to the wall, where Buttons had been standing the whole time.
Buttons, very much not steering the ship, stared back, unblinking. “Olivia wanted to watch the game,” he said of the seagull perched on his head. “She’s a yen for hot gossip.”
“...SHIT!”
Edward tore out of the jam room, most of the crew stampeding after him. Izzy remained seated, Ivan and Fang still at his side and Buttons still against the wall. Under the thunder of footsteps and bickering and Bonnet shrieking in panic, Izzy smiled.
“You were right, Fang. That was fun.”

Monster Spotlight: Chimney Troll
CR 2
Chaotic Evil Large Humanoid
Daughters of Fury, pg. 52
Don’t be fooled by their scrawny appearance, these creatures tower over the average human, though most of their size is just for show. One of the smallest and weakest breeds of troll, these isolated beasts are considered outcasts and pariahs by their own kind, shunned and hated from birth because of their Wicked Blood. Their origins are not elaborated on, only that some form of fiendish magic, necromancy, or curse has tainted their entire lineage, causing them to lose the incredible regenerative powers that their brethren enjoy. In fact, their Wicked Blood means Chimney Trolls cannot heal naturally at all, relying on magical healing to keep their wounds from piling up... or relying on a strange magical quirk that unnerves other trolls.
Most of them are driven from the wilds their kin call home and into urban areas, where they must learn to survive or perish. Their long, gangly limbs and unusually light weight in spite of their size allow them to move across rooftops with deceptive silence (+8 Stealth in urban environments), they can climb 20ft in a single round, and they can contort their bodies in distressing, unnatural ways to cram themselves into spaces they have no right to. Nocturnal by nature, they spend days crammed inside any structure that can hold them, but--as their name suggests--prefer to nest inside the chimneys of occupied structures in order to have easy access to life-sustaining fire.
Any troll would balk at the appetites of the Chimney Trolls, as the very same substance which causes irreparable harm to their uncursed kin instead restores their health and vitality (though ironically they’re not immune to fire, but their 10 Resistance is enough at low levels!). They can inhale any nonmagical fire within 30ft as a standard action, be it candlelight or campfire, ingesting the flame and gaining Regeneration 3 for three rounds regardless of the fire’s size. It is only this method that allows them to overcome the curse of their bloodline, the fire in their bellies rapidly restoring them from the most terrible of injuries, even restoring any lost limbs and damaged organs. While perfectly capable of creating their own fires (and will do so if they have the time), they much prefer stealing it from active chimneys, the torchlight of patrolling guards or travelers, or from the fire pits of campers, because that means they can also grab a quick meal.
While not plagued with the endless, maddening voracity found in most other trolls, Chimney Trolls still prefer proportionately enormous meals, not only stealing whatever food may be cooking on the fire but having zero qualms with devouring the screaming occupants of whatever home they infiltrate. While it’s possible to reason with them and bribe them with a hefty meal, it’s unlikely they’ll take it; they’re actually among the smarter troll breeds out of necessity (meaning their Int is 8 instead of 5), and they know witnesses to their presence will likely draw the attention of guards or adventurers. Thus, most meetings with a Chimney Troll start with horrified screams as the beast unfolds from a supply closet, ventilation shaft, or chimney, and ends with silent chewing as the troll slaughters everyone within a home and squats in the space until authorities investigate or the food stores run out.
Their inability to heal without fire or magic makes them hesitant to engage in any combat they don’t get the surprise round and quick to flee if their enemies outnumber or overpower them too greatly. Don’t let this trick you into thinking they’re weak, though; their bodies are much frailer than a normal trolls, but they still have a CCB attack (1d6+1 and 1d8+1) and a 10ft space/10ft reach that lets them put it to good use, making them a formidable threat to low-level adventurers and guards alike, especially in the cramped urban spaces they nest in. If they’ve recently consumed fire or see that they have access to more they become much braver, unable to be killed for a short time unless exposed to Acid or Cold damage.
Thanks to their appearance, a foolish attacker may believe it to be a normal troll, which is the creature’s greatest danger. Someone raising a torch in the hopes of scaring it off may just empower it as it sucks the flame from the stick and rapidly begins to heal... but each time they consume a fire, they also gain the ability to exhale a cloud of choking, burning smoke. This Soot Cloud deals 1d6 Fire damage and nauseates a single creature within 30ft of the troll, though a DC 13 Fortitude save halves the damage and negates the nausea. It’s a little bit of insult AND injury, really, to see the weapon you thought would give you an advantage eaten and then regurgitated straight into your face, leaving you helpless to the incoming savage beating.
That’s the luckiest thing that can happen. The unluckiest is that the creature swats the torch from your hand and into a pile of kindling it built in the home it infested, sending the entire structure up in flames. The troll can take the heat--and in fact will thrive in it--but everyone else is likely to just go up in smoke.
You can read more about them here.

Have you ever read "a study of dolls" published in 1897? I found some pages you might find interesting. you can find the book for free on google (askbox character limit :() pg43 acknowledges there were adult women who played with dolls in the 19th century. pg49 has an interesting passage about boys & dolls. mostly that they should be allowed to play with dolls & that it outweighs the risk of making "boy milliners". is "boy milliners" a euphemism for gay? maybe more like "sissy"?
pg 43 "Girls often play with dolls regularly until 13 or 14, when, with the dawn of adolescence, the doll passion generally abates. It is then realized more distinctly than before that dolls have absolutely no inner life or feeling. Some girls play with dolls with great pleasure, but secretly, till well on in the teens and often in the twenties, and occasionally married women, generally those without children, or single women, play with dolls all their lives." trying to send the quotes from 1897 page 49 "That boys are naturally fond of and should play with dolls as well as girls there is abundant indication. One boy in a family of girls, or boys who are only children, often play with dolls to seven or eight years of age. It is unfortunate that this is considered so predominantly a girl's play. Most boys abandon it early or never play, partly because it is thought girlish by adults as well as by children. (1/2) Of course, boy life is naturally rougher and demands a wider range of activities. The danger, too, of making boy milliners is of course obvious, but we are convinced that on the whole more play with girl dolls by boys would tend to make them more sympathetic with girls as children, if not more tender with their wives and with women later. Again, boys, as well as girls, might be encouraged to play with boy dolls more than at present, with great advantage to both." (2/2)
I have not read that, but it sounds fascinating! Information about adult doll collectors in the 19th century is scarce, though one hears tantalizing tidbits here and there- Napoleon Bonaparte's niece Mathilde is rumored to have been one, for example. Once it goes mainstream in the 1920s with boudoir dolls, though, we get psychologists insisting that it's a "freak" of "abnormal women" who need to have children instead (because of course, dolls are just Child Replacements). It was ever thus.
I HAVE heard accounts of little boys playing with dolls back then, though! mostly dolls representing boys, thought not always. It seems to have been somewhat more normalized than it is now- not entirely, however, as those quotes indicate. I don't know the specific euphemism "boy milliners," but I would hazard a guess that homophobia is indeed what it indicates, since millinery was a very feminine-coded occupation.
This is an amazing resource! Thank you so much for sharing.

Night of the Witch review
4/5 stars Recommended if you like: dual POVs, witchy reads, chosen one, historical fantasy
TW torture, animal cruelty (memory)
I really like the premise of the book and think there's good potential here, but the book itself just didn't....wow me. I enjoyed reading it but wanted it to have a bit more oomph to it to be able to make it five stars.
One of my big issues with the book that kept popping up was the German. Did no one involved in the publishing process consult a German speaker? Or at least Google Translate? While the German was meant to help create the worldbuilding, I was taken out of the story almost every time due to the mistakes. Even though the characters are only using single words, the grammar is all over the place. In German, all nouns are capitalized, which Revis and Raasch do for words like Liebste, meine Schwester, and Hauptmarkt, but conveniently don't do for Miststück and only do it half the time for Hexe and Jäger. Likewise, they get the pluralization right for words like Hexen but not for the second part Jäger (which they have plurally as jägers). I promise, people will understand if you don't use an s. Then, there's a little issue of mistranslation, or at least the authors misunderstanding the translation. At the beginning of the book (and thankfully only the beginning 1/3-1/2), they really like using the word unverschämt, which is an adjective and means 'outrageous/rude/brazen/etc.' But the authors use it almost solely like a noun: "They're full of gunpowder, you unverschämt" (p. 18) and "Stay awake, unverschämt" (p.29). Like....what? Those sentences don't make any sense! The translation for 'idiot' in German is just Idiot, or they could've used Dummkopf, or if they wanted to use a non-obvious German word for insulting someone's intelligence, they should've used Trottel or Blödel. Finally, they use the word schiesse liberally throughout the book. Schiesse translates to "shoot," which might be fine if the characters weren't 1) using it like a curse, and 2) actually cursing elsewhere in the book. If the characters didn't use actual curse words in the book, I could believe they were saying "shoot" and keeping things PG (except also for that sex scene). But these two things make me think the authors were trying to use scheisse "shit" and just misspelled it throughout the novel. Again, all of these are very simple mistakes that even a Google search could've fixed. You bother to research the witch trials of Trier but can't be bothered to get the language right?
The actual content of the story was better, probably because we're dealing with fantasy and not things you need to fact check. I definitely wanted there to be more witchiness and magic in the book, and felt we didn't really get enough of that. Perhaps in book 2, but I don't think I'll be picking that one up.
Fritzi starts her journey desperately trying to rescue her cousin, Liesel, from the witch hunters who attacked their village and killed all of its occupants save Fritzi and Liesel. It's a bit weird because I thought Liesel was Fritzi's age (18) at first, or at least a teenager, but then it turns out she's only 10. Regardless, Fritzi feels immense guilt for what happened to their coven and is determined to protect Liesel, and others, from the same fate. Otto says she's got a mouth on her but....I don't really think she has an attitude? She's rightfully freaked out, angry, and defensive when they meet and are getting to know each other, but after that she's pretty chill. She's willing to stand up for herself and others though, and maybe that's what he means? I did like Fritzi as a character. She does end up in a bit of a mess, but practically every adult in her life has been lying to her, either knowingly or not, so it makes sense that she makes mistakes.
Otto is trying his best. He desperately wants things in Trier to change and decides a big show to push revolution is the only way to make that happen. Best laid plans and all that. But Otto is protective and willing to help Fritzi and Liesel. I think he'd help them even if their paths didn't go the same direction, it's clear he's a softy. He and Fritzi have similar guilt in them about their pasts and things that have happened, so they function well as mirrors.
I liked Liesel, she was cute. She has some moments of being wise beyond her years, perhaps due to the goddess whispering in her head, but then she'll get overly delighted by things like dessert and it becomes clear again that she's a kid.
The romance is pretty quick, but it's sweet. It's one of those instaloves where it feels gradual even though they've probably only known each other a week. I tend to be okay with instalove when it doesn't feel like instalove, so other than some stuff at the beginning, I liked the romance.
I'm a little confused by some of the stuff with the Well. The people there pose the argument that they can either protect the Well or go out and protect other people/witches, but...why not both? They have people specifically assigned to protecting the Well already and they already have a separate group of people assigned as guards on patrol, so why not have a subsection of the guards that goes out and helps people/witches? It doesn't seem like it would be a drain on their resources.
Honestly, I don't know why everyone is griping about this being labeled a YA book but not actually being YA. ACOTAR is sometimes labeled as YA and is definitely not. This? I would consider it YA. The characters curse (only in German), but that's normal (and as mentioned, some of it isn't even correct), and refer to The Three or Maiden, Mother, Crone. There's some grim stuff, like killing, off-page witch burnings, and one memory of animal cruelty, but imo there are neither enough scenes nor are the scenes graphic enough that the book warrants an 'adult' designation. As for the sex scene...does it start to tip a little toward 'adult' content? Yes. Is it a graphic sex scene? No. There's very little actual description of what's occurring. I know there's this new push to keep sex entirely out of YA books, but people. Teenagers have sex and they're going to read/watch/find out about it. YA books range from no sex to fade-to-black, to some mild descriptions and imo that's totally fine because it allows teenagers to safely and age appropriately explore and see that stuff in their fiction. While this is definitely on the upper end of 'mild descriptions,' this is also described as an 'upper YA' book.
Overall I enjoyed this book but it didn't wow me as much as I would've liked. Despite there being a graphic torture scene, I feel like a lot of the book's teeth were pulled out. I wanted more magic and more of a plot besides 'travel from A to B.' Also the incorrect German was really annoying.

I try to keep this blog PG and would genuinely be more than happy to never discuss headmate sex here... but it's unfortunately necessary when it's a source of fakeclaiming.
WARNING: Obviously, this is going to delve into topic of inner world sex in a semi-explicit (but relatively dry and boring) way. It's already flagged, but I'll give a another warning for anyone who this makes uncomfortable and wants to turn away.
This is more for singlets who are reading this and think inner world sex is impossible or doesn't make sense.
I'd like to take a moment to demystify the topic a little bit.
The above system on r/systemscringe admits they don't have an inner world so it's not too surprising that they don't think it's possible.
The briefest and most relatable explanation of an inner world for those that don't know is that it's a simulated environment created by the brain. If you're a singlet, you might be able to imagine yourself standing in a room of your choosing right now, maybe a fictional room from your favorite TV shows. If so, congrats! You have an inner world now! That's really all there is to it. (But if you're a system struggling with making and immersing yourselves in inner worlds, check out these guides I've compiled from across the plural community.)
The biggest differences between a singlet's inner world and a system's is just that the system's has more occupants.
Each member of a system has imaginative control over the space, allowing each to "imagine themselves" in the same shared space. It's sort of the difference between playing a single-player game and a multiplayer game. We tend to call these forms mindforms.
(Note: Some system inner world experiences are more complicated than described. This is very much an oversimplification and I wouldn't be able to cover the vast variety of inner world experiences without veering way off course.)
Despite what the above r/systemscringe user claims, innerworld sex doesn't require physically touching the body... for much the same reason that singlets can also orgasm without touching the body...
I would highly recommend people check the above article out.
I feel one problem with many systems not talking about inner world sex is that it's become viewed as this strange and arcane experience, which has allowed those that do discuss it to become prime targets for fakeclaiming, but the reality is that inner world sex actually uses very basic cognitive mechanisms that can be utilized by both systems and singlets alike.
Aside from the multiplicity itself which allows multiple self-conscious agents to each have a mindform and interact with each other... What makes inner world sex possible is the same thing that makes it possible for people in the Vice article to trigger orgasms through thinking, fantasizing or erotic hypnosis.
So please, stop using systems having inner world sex as a justification for fakeclaiming systems!
Thank you for your time!

The Pains We Endure | Chapter One
Masterlist | Ao3
Summary: September 1st, 1889. Edith Pryce begins her new position as assistant librarian at Hogwarts, a role few think is necessary. The school's gruff potions master is not the kind of company she usually keeps. When Edith must ask for his assistance, she finds that there is more to him than meets the eye, but it is easy to get on his bad side. (Aesop Sharp x OC)
Chapter Rating: PG
Chapter Warnings: None!
Word count: 2.9k
A/N: Victorian Romance Lite. I made up strain of belladonna (I think?) for my plot, don't hurt me. Doing my best to meld historical accuracy with what I think the wizarding world is like, and honestly just making choices I think will suit the story. Takes place the school year before the events of Hogwarts Legacy. 1 of 6.
—
Though it was a warm September morning, Edith shivered in the shadow of the castle looming before her. Hours before any students would arrive to start their term at Hogwarts, Edith stared at the heavy wooden doors in trepidation. It had been a mere seven years since she had walked these halls as a student. She never dreamed she would return as a member of staff.
Not that the title of assistant librarian was prestigious. But Edith was lucky to have it, lucky to be at Hogwarts in the first place. There was no place safer, after all.
“Right this way, Miss Pryce,” Mr. Moon prompted her to follow him through the now open doors. “Your belongings will be taken to your room; have no fear.”
The quiet, empty halls transformed Hogwarts into an entirely different place from her memory. Cold isolation greeted her, rather than the warm welcome home she anticipated. Their footsteps echoed off the stone walls as Mr. Moon led her through the corridors and up stairs until they reached the faculty tower. He stopped in front of a room that appeared to be a lounge, a fire blazing in the hearth surrounded by several sofas and chairs. Clearing his throat to get the attention of the room’s single occupant, Mr. Moon spoke, “Professor Weasley? Miss Pryce is here.”
Matilda Weasley smiled widely when she saw Edith step into the room. “My dear Edie. It’s wonderful to have you here, at last. You had a pleasant journey?”
The tension building in Edith’s shoulders suddenly vanished. Edith swept over to the older woman and took her hands, beaming. “Matilda, it is so good to see you. You don’t know how grateful I am for your help in securing this position.”
“Think nothing of it, my dear girl.” Matilda gestured toward a low table sitting in front of the fireplace. “I’ve just made tea. Would you like some?”
“You know a good of tea is my weakness.”
Seated on the sofa, Matilda placed a hand on Edith’s shoulder. “How have you been holding up, my dear?”
Edith nodded through a sip of her tea, almost spluttering as she swallowed. She expected questions. Just not so soon. “Some days are worse than others. I try to remember I’m fortunate to be here, but sometimes it feels incredibly unfair. But I’m ready to focus all my attention on this job. You won’t regret this, Matilda, I promise.”
Shaking her head, Matilda smiled. “I am not worried in the slightest. I think you’ll find yourself right at home with the rest of the staff. Headmaster Black is looking forward to meeting you later.”
Ah yes. The man’s reputation preceded him, but Edith wasn’t worried. She had grown adept at staying out of the way, and she would be no different with the headmaster. He would hardly know she was there if Edith had her way. Fading into the background, everyday hum of life at Hogwarts was her ultimate goal. To simply exist in basic comfort until she was forgotten. Well, forgotten by one person, at least.
The uneven gait of limping footsteps brought their attention to the doorway. The man who stood there paused, his surprised gaze landing on Edith. His shoulder length hair matched the dark brown of his eyes, the scruff on his chin unable to hide the scar that ran down the right side of his face. He recovered from his surprise at the newcomer’s presence and joined them, taking a seat in the armchair across from Edith.
“Ah, Aesop. This is Miss Edith Pryce. She is our new library assistant,” Matilda said in introduction. “Edith, Professor Aesop Sharp, our potions master.”
Edith bowed her head in greeting. “Pleased to meet you, Professor Sharp.”
Aesop’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. “Library assistant? I wasn’t aware we needed one.”
The girl before him certainly looked the part. Her black hair was pinned up neatly, dark eyes glittering with the intelligence of someone who often had their nose in a book. She even dressed like a librarian, in hues of blue and grey.
Edith shifted beside Professor Weasley. The man’s tone said it all. A useless girl filling a useless position. She expected others to feel the same; not everyone would be as welcoming as Matilda.
Hogwarts had never needed a second librarian before. It was painfully obvious that Matilda was doing her a favor, and Edith expected rumors and suspicions. She was prepared to weather them.
“I thought Miss Scribner could use an extra pair of hands,” Matilda said. “And a second pair of eyes, given the mischievous batch of students we have found ourselves with these past few years.”
Aesop’s gaze slid between Edith and Matilda, looking unconvinced. “I’m sure Miss Pryce’s presence will prove very useful.”
Edith didn’t think he meant that in the slightest.
—
The next few days were a whirlwind. Edith felt like a first year, trying to get her bearings around the castle anew while adjusting to her new job. It wasn’t especially difficult, simply carrying out tasks Scribner didn’t have time for - or didn’t want to do herself. But it kept Edith occupied, and she enjoyed feeling useful.
It was not even a week into term when Scribner gave Edith an assignment she wished she could refuse.
“Doxies. I don’t know how they got in here, but if we don’t get rid of them soon, we’ll have a full-blown infestation on our hands. I need you to speak with Professor Sharp.”
So she had left at once.
Edith took a breath, steeling herself as she approached the potions master’s office. She had already come to know his gruff demeanor, and she wasn’t looking forward to asking him for a favor.
Nevertheless, it was her job. Professor Sharp sat at his desk, looking over some papers. His brow knit in concentration, and perhaps pain, he looked severe as ever. She rapped her knuckles softly on the open door. “Professor Sharp? I’m sorry to interrupt.”
He glanced up from his papers, but did not spare her a long look. “Not sorry enough, it seems. What is it?”
Though uninvited, Edith approached his desk. It wouldn’t do to shout at him from the doorway. “We have a small doxy infestation in the library. Miss Scribner said you have a potent recipe for doxycide, and we wondered if you might have some available?”
Aesop rose, scanning the shelves that lined the room. “I don’t have any prepared, but I can brew a bottle. It will take a bit of time. I can bring it to the library this afternoon.”
Edith clasped her hands in front of her. “Thank you, professor. That would be much appreciated.”
She turned to leave when a glint of silver on his desk caught her eye. “This badge… were you an auror, Professor Sharp?”
Bottles clinked as Aesop continued to pick out the ingredients he sought. “I was.”
Edith stared down at the badge, musing over what it represented. “Facing dark wizards requires a great deal of bravery.”
Facing them without bravery always ends in disaster.
A scoff. “That’s one way to look at it, I suppose.” She heard him pause. “You can probably guess how that ended for me.”
She thought of the way he favored his bad leg. An injury magic had yet to cure. How long had Aesop lived with his pain? Longer than she had lived with hers. “Injured in the line of duty?”
Aesop turned to her. “I barely escaped with my life. My partner was not so lucky. If not for my own overconfidence, things might have been different.”
Edith stared down at the auror badge. A memory swirled upon its polished surface, one that entered her mind unbidden. The flash of green light. That terrible scream. The breaking of her heart. “Bearing responsibility for another’s death is not easy.”
“Miss Pryce?”
Edith looked up to see him raising an eyebrow at the sadness in her voice. “I apologize, professor, I have taken up enough of your time. I shall leave you to it.”
She felt his eyes on her back as she left the room. There had been something in his eyes when he looked at Edith. A flush of annoyance. A bit of impatience. Aesop thought he understood her, of course. But no one really understood Edith.
Not even herself, sometimes.
Edith returned to an empty library. She stared up at the two stories, the rows of books and shelves, the alcoves and reading areas. So many perfect places for doxies to hide.
“Can’t clear them out if you can’t find them,” she muttered to herself.
So she began the arduous task of seeking out the doxy nest.
It took at least two hours to search the lower floor, and Edith found herself frustrated at the end of it. She had found nothing but a few stray creatures that quickly flitted away when revealed from their hiding places. Which left the entirety of the second floor needing the same thorough attention.
Edith climbed the spiral stairs, squinting at how dark it was compared to the fire-lit comfort of the floor below.
“Who left those curtains like that?” The question was posed to the empty air as Edith’s gaze landed on a half-covered window. Sighing, stalked to the window and flung open the curtains.
With little shrieks and gnashing of tiny teeth, a cloud of doxies flew out of the drapery. With a yelp of surprise and terror, Edith turned and ran back down the stairs. The doxies pursued, flying much faster than she could run. Almost tripping over the last few stairs, Edith snatched up a book left on a table. One doxy flew into her face, taunting her, lunging at her, its teeth bared.
Edith swung the book, knocking the doxy out of the air. With an affronted noise, it zipped away and out of sight. The rest of the cloud of doxies scattered. A few stayed behind, crowding her like gnats as they flew at her face. A few more swings of the heavy book sent them back to their hiding places, except for one. It dove at her, tangling itself in a loose lock of her hair.
Edith yelped as it tugged on her hair, trying to free itself. Her weapon was useless, for she could not swipe at the little beast without hitting herself in the head. She struggled against the doxy, eyes burning as it felt like it was trying to rip her hair out.
“Arresto momentum.”
The doxy froze, and Edith wasted no time freeing herself from it, throwing it to the ground. Professor Sharp cleared his throat, and she spun around to face him. “Do librarians prefer books even to wands?”
Sighing in relief, Edith laid a hand over her chest. He looked back at her, an eyebrow raised in bemusement, holding the doxycide aloft.
Edith tucked a lock of loose hair behind her ear, trying to restore a little of her decorum. “Professor Sharp, your rescue is most timely. These little monsters are simply exhausting.”
With a soft thump, Edith laid the book on the desk, happy to be free of its weight. She reached out for the bottle of doxycide, and felt her fingertips graze his skin as she took it. He drew his hand back quickly, both of them pretending it hadn’t happened.
“Do you know how to use it?” Aesop asked, his stoic gaze landing on Edith’s face.
Edith nodded, smiling reassurance. “Yes, I’ve tangled with doxies before. I shall manage.”
“Use it sparingly, if you can. I won’t be able to make another batch for a while. This is the last of the silver belladonna leaves from my stores. This particular strain is difficult to procure here.”
Professor Sharp didn’t even try to hide the annoyance in his tone. Edith’s polite mask remained in place when she answered. “I will apply it prudently. You have my word.”
There was a rustling sound on the upper floor, and Aesop caught sight of a few doxies flying around.
Edith sighed. “I had better get to work. Thank you again, Professor Sharp.”
“Take care not to let them bite you,” Aesop called over his shoulder.
“That is indeed my priority.” Edith called down from the spiral staircase, ready to wage war with the doxies.
—
The library was closed for two days while the offending creatures were removed. On the morning of the third day, Aesop entered his office to find a little woven basket sitting on its surface. He eyed it warily as he approached, then realized it was full of immaculately harvested silver belladonna leaves.
Aesop lifted the basket and peered at it, finding no sign of whence it came. But then, there was only one person who knew that he had used the last of this ingredient. With a huff, he set the basket back down on the desk and headed back for the hall.
The library was busy with students catching up on two days of lost studying. Edith scurried to and fro, directing students to books they sought, replacing books abandoned on tables, and occasionally cleaning up doxy droppings that she had missed. It took Aesop a few separate attempts to flag her down.
She approached, giving him her full attention, still holding a book. “Something you need, Professor Sharp?”
Somewhere in his mind, Aesop might have noticed how pale Edith was today, seen the dullness in her eyes, noted the way her fingers lingered at her temple when she brushed her hair back. But he took none of these things into consideration when he spoke.
“I assume you are the one who left a basket of belladonna leaves on my desk?”
Edith looked at him, her brow furrowing in confusion. “You said you were out, didn’t you?”
“And you were kind enough to gather the leaves because you think I am not capable myself.” He accused her.
Aesop had seen the look on her face when she asked about his auror badge. Her tone of voice when she asked about his injury was full of patronizing sorrow. He would not suffer some slip of a girl waltzing into the school and feeling sorry for him.
“I beg your pardon?” Edith’s eyes were wide with confusion.
Edith lowered her voice, her next words a hissed whisper. “I don’t know what I have said to give you this impression, but I assure you, pity is the last thing I feel.”
“Then why go to the trouble?” Aesop asked. “I’m capable of replenishing my own potion supplies.”
Edith scoffed, blinking in disbelief. “It was merely meant to be an offering of thanks, in exchange for using the last of your supply on the doxycide. If I have offended you, Professor Sharp, I will gladly take them back and put them to another use.”
“Where did you get them, anyway?” Sharp asked. “It grows in difficult to reach places. Am I to believe you’ve been climbing cliffs around the highlands?”
“On the contrary, Professor Sharp. I cultivated it.”
“Cultivated it?” Sharp asked, disbelief filling his tone.
Edith nodded.
“Silver belladonna, unlike its common counterpart, is difficult to grow in controlled conditions. Hence its rarity.” Aesop was aware he sounded like a badly quoted textbook, but he couldn’t conjure any words of his own.
“Yes, I know. I’m very good with plants, professor,” Edith said sharply. She wasn’t about to admit it was one of the few things at which she excelled.
Aesop opened his mouth to respond when a first year approached Edith with a question. “We can discuss this further another time,” Aesop suggested as she turned away.
“I hardy think so, Professor Sharp,” Edith said over her shoulder. “I have nothing else to say on the matter.”
Aesop stood there for a moment, staring after her. It was the first time he had heard such a flippant tone from the usually soft-spoken Edith. Shaking his head, he made his way back to his classroom. He needed to find a jar for those leaves.
But it was just the beginning of a very trying day.
Incompetent first years, students using the library’s closing as an excuse for incomplete assignments, and the ever-exhausting Garreth Weasley were just a fraction of what he had to contend with. The addition of an approaching rainstorm left Aesop’s leg aching, and his disposition souring every minute. He sighed in relief when the last of his students filed out of the classroom, signaling it was time for dinner.
Aesop sunk gratefully into his seat at the Great Hall, looking forward to a hot meal and a moment of peace. Though, since he seemed to have insulted Miss Pryce, he wasn’t sure peace was on the menu. Perhaps he should apologize?
“I think the term is off to a rather successful start, all things considered,” Matilda was saying.
He saw her gaze slide to the empty seat at the table. “Is our new library assistant not joining us?” Aesop asked dryly.
“Miss Pryce sends her apologies,” said Professor Weasley. “She has taken to her room with a rather nasty headache.”
“Poor dear,” Miss Scribner commented. “I think she’s exhausted from dealing with those doxies. She was quite thorough, but I don’t think she has the constitution for that sort of work.”
Aesop did not comment. He felt a tug of something unexpected as he heard of Edith’s absence: disappointment.

Why Student Housing Is a Wise Investment
Higher Rental Yields
Another benefit of investing in student housing is the prospect of increased rental yields. Because students frequently share housing, landlords can charge greater rents per square foot than they would for a standard rental property. Additionally, houses near universities tend to attract higher rental fees due to their handy location.
Income stability
• consistent demand: Colleges and universities have a steady influx of students, resulting in persistent housing demand. This stability might result in consistent occupancy rates and rental income.
• Parental guarantees: Co-signing a lease with parents adds financial stability and reduces late payments for students.
• Low vacancy rates: During the academic year, student housing is in high demand, resulting in low vacancy rates. This provides investors with a more consistent and predictable income source.
Low Maintenance
Another advantage of investing in student housing is that they require less maintenance. Unlike other rental buildings that require frequent upkeep, student homes are frequently fully furnished, and residents are responsible for keeping their living areas in good condition. As a result, landlords can reduce their maintenance costs.
High Demand
One of the key reasons why investing in student dormitories is a wise decision is the increasing demand for student housing. As universities and colleges expand, the number of students looking for housing grows. This trend is particularly widespread in places with large institutions. In these places, there is a high demand for student accommodation, yet supply frequently falls short.
Long-Term Investment
Finally, investing in student housing can be a long-term investment. As universities and colleges expand, the need for student accommodation will rise. As a result, investing in student housing can provide a steady stream of revenue for many years to come.
Conclusion: The student housing industry in India is expanding quickly, attracting investors and developers. Many variables make student housing an attractive investment. However, there are dangers involved with any investment.
Conducting adequate research and using correct discernment can assist manage and mitigate these risks.
Finally, student housing can make students feel safer and more established, allowing them to minimize stress and focus on other aspects of their lives. It's the best option for pupils.
