Whisky Review Time --- Paul John Select Cask Indian Single Malt
India is not known as a whisky producing country. Scotland, sure, Kentucky, definitely, but India hasn't exactly earned a reputation for making great whisky which is unfortunate, because I will say up front this is a great whisky. India actually has quite a long history of whisky making going back to the 19th century when India was a British colony. The Scots brought whisky to India, setting distilleries all over the country to supply British soldiers and merchants with their daily drink. The Paul John distillery is located in Goa which is on the west coast of southern India.
John Distilleries is a very new business relatively speaking, first making blended whiskys upon opening in 1992 and not making a single malt until 2008.
Paul John Single Malt Select Cask is made with a mash bill of malted barely, aged in ex bourbon barrels for 7 years, and has an alcohol content of 55.2%. Being a select cask means that it is specially bottled from what the master distiller believes to be the best casks after sampling, which are then blended.
When I bought a bottle of this it had a retail price of around $100 but it was on clearance sale for $40. This made me wonder if I made a mistake as I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my father. Fortunately this turned out to be a good purchase because this whisky is fantastic! Upon nosing I get very delightful aromas of fresh fruits such as apples and pears with some dried fruits like raisins and prunes. It is very sweet smelling, and like it's smell it is also very sweet tasting. Upon tasting again I get notes of fresh apples and pears, sherry, honey, some oak, maybe a little cinnamon, and a good amount of bready flavor from the malted barley. The flavors of it are very rich, very bold, and very complex which is something that I like when it comes to whisky or whiskey. All around it's flavor profile is very delightful. It finishes with a nice peppery burn that warms the mouth all the way to the stomach. That would be the 55.2 % alcohol, which is a bit higher than most whiskies. Regardless the burn is not overwhelming but very pleasant and mellow, which is a sign of a good whiskey. I know in other reviews I complained that a whiskey was too boozy, but in the case of bad whiskies the alcohol overwhelms any flavors, making it just burny cheap alcoholic nastiness. With this whisky the higher proof complements and enhances the flavors. I rate it 4.9 out of 5. My only complaint is that it is hard to find, and if I do find it, I'm probably not going to be able to buy it for $40 again.

On the other hand, a staple of America, Bourbon Whiskey, made from at least 51% corn, is distilled, aged in charred oak barrels and requires no minimum aging period for its production. It is a product of settlers who made efforts to produce it and be the first ones to store it in charred oak casks, giving the dram a legendary brownish colour with a flavourful taste. Another kind of Bourbon is the Tennessee whiskey ; to produce whiskey in Tennessee, the state law requires and makes sure to use the step prior to aging the whiskey — Lincoln County Process.
Another American whiskey, corn whiskey is made principally from corn with a mash of at least 80% corn. The procedure applied here is the traditional mash process which in addition, does not require aging. It is a symbol of representing authentic ways of producing whiskey, when earlier, farmers used the cheapest raw material to make whiskey. It is enjoyed mostly with mixers, cola, water, as neat, or on the rocks to achieve a more palatable experience and at last as the base for the iconic cocktails – Manhattan and Old Fashioned.
Rye whiskey, an initial product of the Americans, is made with a mash of at least 51% rye that needs to be aged for a minimum of two years. It is also notably one of the most classic bases for cocktails, with a spicy touch to it.

Coming from an exquisite location, Japanese whisky is also known to have a very flavourful, smooth character with floral notes. It resonates with all the latest, high-end whiskies and is widely produced in various styles – blended, single malt and even blended malt whiskies.
Today, flavoured whiskies have proven to be a phenomenal base liquor. Day by day, infused and distilled spirits are gaining momentum, venturing into tricky ingredients that are now becoming a part of whiskies and giving rise to an endless number of possibilities for the whisky makers to indulge in. Another important aspect of a whisky that determines the flavour is the kind of cask used that are wooden vessels that are used to store and age the whisky that further depends on the quality of the wood, shape, size, ageing period and how it was treated and seasoned.
Each cask has a different flavour profile and contributes to the whisky’s character, for instance – European oaks are used to give a spicy character to the whisky. The complexity of flavours depends on the kind of casks that range from bourbon whiskey cask, sherry cask, port whiskey, rum whiskey, wine whiskey etc with various sizes that need to be chosen wisely like barrels, hogshead, madeira drum, port pipe and others. Ale You Need is Love
Below is the transcript from my guest post on the crime fiction blog, Sleuthsayers. <You can read the original post here>
Confession time.
I’m not a beer drinker. Never have been. In my early days of enjoying spiked beverages, I reached for wine coolers (shoutout to my two college friends, Bartles and James). Then Scotch whiskey, both single malt and blends, took over as my libation of choice. These days, I favor crisp Italian white wines.
Which is a long way of saying, I was in store for some fun new-to-me research to help craft my short story of suspense, “Not Yo’ Mama’s IPA” in Murder, Neat, a SleuthSayers Anthology. I took Happy Hour fieldtrips to a few of Richmond, Virginia’s finest brew pubs. Tasted flights of beers. Studied the origins of IPAs, as well as the proper way to pour and serve. Did you know India Pale Ales (a.k.a. IPAs) have their own dedicated glassware? I didn’t when I started plotting my story idea.
Well, then if not beer, what inspired my story, you might wonder? An insurance statement delivered by snail mail not so long ago. Sexy? Maybe not, but I found it pretty compelling.Kristin Kisska © Lindsey Pantele Photgraphy
As the beneficiary of my husband’s life insurance, I received what would be the final premium invoice for his term policy. That auspicious morning, I’d ripped open the envelope, looked up from the paystub to him, and joked that for one final year, he’d be worth more dead than alive—crime authors can be sensitive and thoughtful that way. It’s a good thing my husband shares my humor!
But my muse took my dark quip, noodled it for a while, and ultimately ran with it. What would it take for someone to cash in on a loved one’s expiring policy? How deep and dark would an injustice need be to give them motive?
Let me introduce you to Lynn and Jack, the unlucky-in-love, beer-drinking couple at the heart of my short story of suspense, “Not Yo’ Mama’s IPA”. Lynn finds out that ignorance can indeed be bliss…until the truth hits you like a sledgehammer.

For the true crime enthusiast with an interest in insurance as motive for murder, I recommend reading the creative nonfiction, The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, which dramatizes the chilling story of serial killer on the loose in Chicago at the turn of the twentieth century. The murderer, H.H. Holmes, mastered the art of convincing his many victims to take out insurance policies with him as the beneficiary. Spoiler alert ~ his prey had a very short life expectancy after signing on the dotted line.
Insurance fraud can be deadly.
At the end of the day, you may or may not find me savoring a fine IPA at happy hour. But one thing I’ll forever be preaching from my soapbox is, don’t let your life insurance policy be used as a weapon against you.
Note ~ No real-life husbands were harmed in the plotting of this short story. On the contrary, mine enjoyed being my plus one as I conducted my IPA and brewery research. I’m happy to report that we both survived the expiration of his insurance policy.
