i think iruka and ebisu could've effectively radicalized each other, had they been left in a room together long enough. like eventually they would start bonding over their experiences as essentially single fathers to kids that no one else in the village gives a fuck about, right. eventually iruka would've had to point out the fact that it's not naruto's fault that he has kurama inside him and that maybe the concept of a literal child sacrifice to keep a demon locked away is a bit fucked up actually. eventually ebisu would've had to be like "actually now that i think about it maybe it is fucked up that i would've died as a 12 year old if my teammate's dad hadn't stepped in. why are we doing this to little kids. hold on. i don't want that to happen to konohamaru actually" and eventually they would have had to come to the conclusion that the shinobi system is fucked up. right.

Being a role model was hard. Being a shinobi was hard. Why did everything have to be so hard and why did Umino Iruka have to care so damn much? At this point in his life, he didn't hold any personal resentment towards the kid. Hell, most of the time, he felt responsible for him, which was more than a lot of the village could say -- the Lord Third included. This mindset didn't stop him from sighing quietly when he knocked on Naruto's door.

Normal senseis got to go home after school and grade papers while drinking a beer.. or whatever. Iruka-sensei gets to go home after school to continue to hang out with a student. But Naruto needed this and he'd be damned before he didn't make sure it happened for the kid.

"Hey, Naruto, come on! Let's go before it gets dark."

Iruka Mentions in the Kakashi Retsuden Novel

"The sleep chakra point, a technique he had learned directly from Iruka, the principal of the ninja academy. When Kakashi mentioned in conversation that he had trouble sleeping sometimes, Iruka had taught him a secret jutsu for inducing restful sleep. The sticking point, through, was that it was hard to hit the spot on yourself, given the chakra point was on the back of the neck."

Kakashi confides in Iruka, and Iruka is more than willing to conduct some private lessons for the Rokudaime.

"Before he became Hokage, Kakashi had only known how to kill people. He had methods of capturing people without killing them, but they all invovled pain and torture. But as time wore on and the country grew stable, the shinobi principle of capture without killing had taken favor. And it was none other than the Sixth Hokage himself who struggled with how to write the guidelines for this new no-kill capture policy. He'd discussed it with Iruka, the principal of the academy at the time, and he had laughed. Kakashi remembered every single word of what he said.

(Iruka) "It's ok. It might not look it, but we do more than just teach students at the academy. We've saved jutsu to make an enemy fall asleep instantly or freeze them on the spot. Everything from old to new is right here."

Distracted by the memory of Iruka's proud face, Kakashi accidentally allowed a bit of fabric to rustle while strangling the ninth shinobi."

What can I say? Kakashi certainly doesn't need the Sharingan to remember Iruka's every word, his laugh and his proud (most definitely smiling) face. In fact it's so distracting he blows his cover on a dangerous infiltration mission remembering it. Yeeeesss.

Iruka is also the last major mention at the end of Kakashi's novel:

(Sarada) "I'm heading out. I got a present for Master Iruka," Sarada said, holding up a cherry pink paper bag. Strawberry Daifuku from Tami Traditional Sweets in the old city. They were widely known to be extraordinary and quickly sold out, so they were hard to get ahold of, a rare treat.

"Oh right, you're doing a homestay at Master Iruka's, right?" Kakashi said.

"Yeah!" Sarada nodded happily. "Cuz Mom and Dad are away on a long mission. Master Iruka's an amazing cook. He's teaching me all kinds of stuff. It's loads of fun."

"Ohh. He is pretty skilled."

Iruka was a longtime bachelor like Kakashi, but unlike Kakashi, who paid little attention to his personal life to start with, Iruka kept a neat home. In contrast with the desk of the Sixth Hokage, which was always covered with scattered papers and documents, the principal's office at the academy was famously neat and tidy.

Kakashi knows Iruka's a skilled cook. He knows Iruka keeps a neat home. (I wonder why) Kakashi's also recently developed a bit of an onsen interest. (Iruka's official data book entry lists onsens as his hobby.) They are both confirmed bachelors. Nice.

Ok, maybe a hot take or not, but I have been thinking as they're two of my Naruto favs and my favorite father-son duo and father's day is next weekend here, but nobody ever talks about how Sakumo messed up Kakashi's life. Okay, before you get on me, yes, people do talk about him un-aliving himself and the impact that had all the time, yes, I get that. BUT, nobody ever talks about how he put Kakashi into the ninja academy at 4 (!) and essentially robbed him of the possibility of EVER having a normal childhood and as a result, a normal life. I get it, I mean your child is this exceptional prodigy who's not "normal" - probably was talking at 3 months, walking at 6 months, reading at 18 months and maybe had 2 chakra natures by the time he was 3 🤷🏾‍♀️. *headcanon alert* Single-parent Dad had to work all the time as a legendary shinobi in a world at war and probably had NO idea what to do with this child with that kind of intellect and talent and would see it as a waste to keep him home (daycare/sitter/where all the other babies go who have active shinobi parents??). So he wanted to nurture those talents - to him it made sense, and in a lot of ways it does, but still...the shinobi world was messed up. 4 year olds should be learning their ABCs - yeah yeah yeah, he already knew his - or playing in the sandbox - okay, so he didn't play well with others, but still, just sayin'...

Then we get to Hiruzen. Sakumo in all likelihood had to ask permission from Hiruzen to enroll his child, who was only born 4 years prior, in the academy. But Hiruzen only saw this child as another tool. Even in the (filler) anime, Hiruzen was all hyped about watching that little 6-year-old in the chunin exams and the Forest of Death. Then, apparently, saw nothing wrong with putting that baby boy on multiple squads with teenagers and adults(!) who kept kicking him off because they refused to take orders from a baby with an attitude problem and then was also sending him on missions during a war (ngl, he'd make a good decoy and would be good at hiding and espionage bc they'd think he's just a cute little kid - Hiruzen, my man, I get it - a six year old is like 3 1/2 feet tall and weighs like 40 pounds on a good day).

Going to give gramps some benefit of the doubt. In looking at mission stats, Kakashi did a heck of a lot D-ranked missions - after Iruka, Kakashi has more D-rank missions than any other shinobi, so thinking Hiruzen possibly felt some guilt and did keep him in the village for some time because of his age (hopefully?? like "here's a mission, go pet some lonely puppies at the animal shelter and spend the day with them to build social skills."). But still...make it make sense. Everybody gets on Hiruzen because of how he treats Naruto, but old man's been treating kids that way long before Naruto was born. And don't give me that, "well, Kakashi was a genin at 5, chunin at 6, so he was technically grown" bs...because then I will say go see the first paragraph about his daddy unintentionally setting him up from the start. Everybody was trying their best, I guess...

Okay, now getting off my high horse and going to bed 😊...

Asuma is 5 years older than Iruka. 7 years before the start of the series, he left Konoha for an unspecified number of years to be one of the Daimyo's personal guards, so he would've left at around 20-21 when Iruka was 15-16, which is the same age that Iruka became chuunin and a teacher. Therefore, it is entirely possible that Asuma was his jounin-sensei as a genin, since he had to have been a jounin for a good many years prior to leaving, and we know via Kakashi and Shikamaru that it's possible to be given that rank in your teens

I only posit this because of my "Asuma and Iruka are pseudo brothers" agenda and I thus think it would be So Fucking Funny if Asuma became jounin at like 16-17 and immediately Hiruzen went "well done son. Here you can be Iruka's genin teacher. Have fun" and they both screamed "WHAT"

You are a newly graduated genin. You get assigned your genin team. Everything is looking fire. You are excited for this. And then you get told your jounin teacher is going to be your pseudo older brother figure who knows the full extent of what you can do with traps and seals and barriers and so will definitely not give you a single fucking break at all

You are a newly minted jounin. You get assigned a genin team, which you're not super surprised about, give your dad is the hokage and people expect a lot from you as a result. You look at the team you've been given. You see your pseudo younger brother figure staring right back at you. You are filled with nothing but horror

naruto has obvious issues with his dad (resentment for putting the jinchuriki on him and being abandoned) but he’s kind of king of repression when it comes to his negative feelings so unless it’s pushed out of it he won’t open up. but also he has iruka he views as his dad so he’s not completely without a father figure

sasuke on the other hand always felt like a shadow of itachi in fugaku’s eyes and when things were finally turning and his father was finally paying attention to him he got that ripped out from him. then later on there’s not a single adult figure that we could see act as a father role to him, and they all just suck. and fugaku is never brought again after his death so all the memories sasuke has of his dad are mostly of himself feeling like he’s not being enough and since he’s the opposite than naruto (as in open about his negative feelings like resentment and hate but repressed about love), it might come off as more obvious

Hold up hear me out:

Modern AU with single dad Kakashi (mechanic maybe? Tattoo artist? Something with weird hours that gives him an sort of ‘bad boy’ vibe?) raising little Naruto and falling for his kids teacher Iruka.

The PTA moms thirst over him as much as they disapprove of him. He is the softest for Naruto but otherwise looks intimidating as fuck. Constantly late for pick up but does bring Iruka coffee though so he is less likely to kill him.

So, I stayed up until after midnight because I decided 30 pages wasn't that much in my hyper-fixated state. I have no regrets because this little gem is one of the last scenes of the entire novel:

I love the idea of Sakura and Sasuke trusting Iruka enough to look aftertheir daughter while they're out on extended missions. I'm sure the other rookies do the same with their children, especially Naruto and Hinata. But besides that, Kakashi's been thinking about Iruka A LOT through this novel.

He describes how he felt when his father died, and how Minato helped him through that. He thinks about Obito and if he's made him proud. But he thinks of Iruka in his present.

The justu's he taught him, the advice he gave to him when he couldn't sleep, how he helped him draft the Capture No-Kill policy, everything. Then, when he's finally home after 20 days of traveling, he runs into the kids, and there's another reminder of Iruka's presence in his life. He compares and contrasts their personalities, but he favors Iruka's assets rather than dismisses them. He's spent enough time with Iruka to the point he knows how well he cooks now, how neat his home and office is.

He's been in those spaces more than once. It's obvious that the two are well-acquainted with one another at this point. With this information, it makes total sense that Iruka would know Kakashi's alternate personality, Sukea. But more than that, it makes sense that Kakashi would be comfortable enough to reveal his face to him. He refers to them each as bachelors, but then lists the amount of domestic duties Iruka enjoys.

It honestly sounds like old gay lingo except it's the shinobi version. He went through hell on that mission, but he didn't kill a single person. No one died, and Iruka gave him the tools needed in order to accomplish that.

Of course, that doesn't mean Kakashi's gentle about it, but he keeps what Iruka taught him in the forefront of his mind at all times, even when he's incredibly incensed.
