THE STORM - Part eight

Fandom: The Boys (Amazon prime tv series)

Pairing: Black Noir x OC

Disclaimer: I don’t own The Boys, only my OC characters and certain pieces of au plot.

A/N: So here’s part eight!! It’s the first of two parts I’m dedicating to the Origins of the OC character. It explains her ties to Vought and the reason why she’s plotting against them. There is no Black Noir in this chapter :( but it’s important for the story. The next chapter will explain her connection to Mallory, and then after that you’ll be seeing much more interaction with our boy Black Noir!!

The Beginning

That night she found herself running in her dreams, just as she did every time she let herself sleep. It always revolved around the beginning of it all, the birth of what plagued her and would haunt her for the rest of her life. She always found herself back at square one, Vought Laboratories.

When she’d been diagnosed with a rare form of immune disease, her parents had been devastated at the lack of resources or therapies available. They’d do anything for her, and they scoured the country’s best hospitals and universities for medicines and potential therapies. Greg and Tara wanted their little girl cured, they wanted her to get a chance at life.

Finally, they found an experimental drug going through clinical trials that might’ve proved successful in correcting the genetic error that was triggering her immune system into attacking her own cells. A team of recruiters from Vought had approached them one day at a hospital, while she’d been getting ready for a check-up. They said they’d investigated her case and had spots available in their trials should she want to try it out. Since the medicine was still under observation, they could only assure an 85% rate of success, and at a lower price. They visited their home multiple times with fliers, power points and data. They assured her parents of the drug’s safety. While it worked in 85% of the patients it never demonstrated any kind of risk or dangerous counter effects. Her parents stayed skeptical for many months, asking questions, and raising concerns, but what ultimately pushed them was their daughter’s heart failure and hospitalization.

She was nine at the time. And as her time quickly diminished, Greg and Tara hurried and signed her up for the program. The experts and physicians at Vought visited her and gathered all of her information before quickly drafting the appropriate dosage for her. She’d have to stay at Vought Laboratories’ clinic far from the city, isolated from the outside world. They had explained this by pointing out the fragile state of her immune system, and the need for her to recover in a safe environment. Lies, so many lies.

The first months went by smoothly, and while she missed her parents, the little girl played with her new friends enjoying the renewed energy coursing through her body. She could run again, and dance and hop without needing to lie down. She could see her parents through a glass window during visitation day every week and they, too, felt relief when they saw her so lively, so different from the pale, skeletal figure she’d been after her hospitalization. Tara felt horrible over the first weeks of not having her at home, not being able to care for her and simply hold her daughter. But when she saw her on the other side of the glass pane, she couldn’t imagine stripping this opportunity away from her.

“Mommy, mommy, look,” the little girl would call while twirling and running around the room, jumping in excitement.

Tara pressed her hand against the glass, eyes brimmed with tears.

“Yes, honey, I see—you’re so strong now.”

The little girl just nodded enthusiastically.

A year later is when the trouble started. She had almost reached the end of therapy when she was moved to another section of the clinic with another small group of kids ranging from about ten to fourteen years old. They were shown a power point explaining their purpose in the project. She hadn’t understood at that time, but she now knew what they meant to say was “guinea pigs.” Basically, the drugs they had been taking had modified certain sequences in their genome in a way that diverged from other subjects. They wanted to understand why, as well as see how far they could go. They concluded by saying that they might end up with powers.

Now, superheroes already existed even though they weren’t yet such an important trademark. But people believed they were born that way. And here you had scientists telling young, impressionable children that they could develop powers even though they weren’t born with them. One can only imagine how they awaited with glee for the program to start.

The children saw their parents less and less, and this was explained by their busy schedule of medical visits, tests, activities, school, and sports which were all provided in this secluded, isolated section of the clinic. What they were actually doing was being subjected to insane amounts of physical and psychological stress. Now the drug had proceeded to cure and further improve their cell genes, but there was a need for an environmental stressor to induce the mutation’s manifestation. They had to wake these new, dormant genes, and for this reason they did atrocious things.

One kid, Norman, presented a gene that is found in organisms that can breathe underwater. They proceeded to force him underwater and keep him there until he was on the brink of drowning.

Another one, Chloe, was thought to be able to heal as her genome held a gene commonly found in animals capable of regrowing a limb, such as lizards. They cut, burned, and maimed her for results.

Some of the children ended up developing a reaction to the duress, awakening their evolved genes. Others died from the intensity of the physical torture. And of those who successfully became enhanced, only few ultimately survived due to the instability of their mutation.

A comment frequently noted by the physicians when taking the patients’ parameters was that the reaction, the gene’s manifestation tended to grow stronger and stronger ‘till it became unsuitable for life. In other words, it ended up killing the host.

Greg and Tara’s little girl too endured the process to achieve greatness, as they had called it. And at first, she’d been enthusiastic, dreaming of becoming a superhero. She stayed up late after-hours skimming through comic books brought in by the therapists. Only later would she understand they had preyed on their naivety and dreams. The children grew obsessed with becoming like the characters in the comic books. The little boys dreamed of becoming like Homelander, and the little girls dreamed of flying.

Greg and Tara couldn’t know that their little one, instead of learning in class, spent her morning being constantly electrocuted. The physicians had high hopes for her and projected that she’d be able to conduct great amounts of energy through her body without burning or dying from electrocution. Her feet in freezing cold water, she sat in a hard, metal chair with a wired contraption wrapped over her forehead.

Every day, she was subjected to shocks of increasing intensity. They talked of “jerking her awake,” hoping that the right shock would trigger her genes into working against the effects of the shock. Finally, one morning, the pain subsided, and she began to absorb the energy rather than try to escape it. It felt odd to her, a warmth pervading her completely. The physicians were beyond content, they were amazed by her abilities. She was a success. They quickly learned she was able to absorb different forms of energy and transfer it. She practiced sticking a finger in an electrical socket before touching the objects laid in front of her. Immediately, the object would fly away, scalding hot.

But the initial glee of having powers slowly faded away, and the girl who was turning twelve wanted it to be over. She just wanted to go home. She yearned to call her mommy and daddy to come and take her away, and every time she saw a cell phone laying around, she subconsciously moved towards it. Unfortunately, she didn’t know their numbers.

She talked about it with the clinic’s therapist.

“Why is this coming up now? Is something wrong?”

The girl fidgeted in her seat, “I just want to go home.”

The therapist gave her a stretched smile, cold and far too wide.

“I understand you miss your mommy and daddy, but you have to stay so we can make sure you’re okay.”

She whined, “But I’m doing better.”

“I know, honey, but—”

The little girl grew fussy and cut her off, “I want my mommy.” When the therapist began to comfort her with empty promises, that distinct feeling of total warmth spread throughout her body. Her eyes shined a light blue, like lasers ready to sizzle anything in front of her, and the therapist immediately stopped speaking.

“There’s no need for that, we’ll set up a visitation day,” she quickly granted, gathering her folder and leaving the room.

The girl grew increasingly aggressive and wouldn’t allow the physicians to touch her. She didn’t want anyone but her parents.

When the day finally came, her parents were ecstatic to see and spend some time with her after two weeks of not being able to contact her. The therapy had worked, and they were thankful to Vought, but what they saw that day haunted the last few minutes of their lives. Their daughter looked ghastly, caramel skin chalky and dry. Her eyes were tired and dark bags hung under her eyes. To her mother’s horror, she looked as sick as her days in and out of hospitals before Vought’s medications. Tara pressed her hand to the glass, tears running down her face. The little girl immediately ran up to the glass, speaking fast.

“Please, I wanna go home,” she pleaded over and over, like a mantra of desperate hope.

Her father grew agitated and turned on her therapist who was also in the room to smooth things over. Certain things couldn’t be said and leave the building. It would bring the world’s ethics community down on all of their heads. This was worse than pumping Compound V into newborns. This was altering children’s DNA and torturing the survivors into an enhanced state of being.

“What happened to her? She was doing so well,” he exclaimed.

“Mr. Stacker, please there is no need to yell,” his face twisted in anger as she continued, “She has been rejecting the medications, we believe she hasn’t been taking them regularly as she’s supposed to.”

“She’s almost twelve, you’re supposed to check that she does that.”

The little girl was crying at this point, banging her little fists soundlessly against the glass.

“Mommy, help me.”

The therapist tried to grab the distressed parents’ attention, “If you could follow me, we can talk about this in more detail.”

“We can do that here,” Greg countered, “we’ve been here for not even five minutes and our daughter is crying out to us—you think we’ll just leave her?”

“No, sir—I just assumed—”

The girls pleading voice cut through her parents’ hearts, “They’re hurting me.”

Her father stared at her. What had they done? The choice had been difficult and ultimately, they decided between the therapy and her disease, between life and death. But if they were hurting her for all this time, it wasn’t life. It was solitary pain.

Tara was crying as she too turned on the therapist who wasn’t sure how to save the situation. Her father firmly stated what they’d both already decided, “We’re taking her home.”

“But sir, you signed a contract—”

“I don’t give a damn, she’s coming home—we can bash this out in court if you care about this contract that much.” He leaned closer, “But I’m sure you don’t want this whole project leaked, do you? What are you actually doing here?”

The therapist plucked her com from her pocket and quickly spoke into it, “We need security in visitation room number nine, I repeat, visitation room number nine.”

Tara erupted, “What do you mean security? You can’t take us away from her.”

“Like I was trying to say, the contract—"

The distressed mother screamed, “We don’t give a fuck about the contract—fucking sue us.”

And then all mayhem erupted. Four security guards burst into the room and quickly grabbed a hold on the two parents, trying to cuff them. Tara looked back at the little girl as they resisted.

“We’ll get you baby, okay? Marianna, look at me, you’re coming home.”

Her father punched a guard before being hit in the ribs with a baton. He fell to the floor and they were all onto him, beating and beating, not giving him the chance to stand back up. Tara screamed and tried to pry them from her husband before one swung at her and pushed her into a corner. The therapist quickly fled the scene, her heels clicking away.

The little girl watched and watched, and when she saw her father stop moving, when she saw her mother being tossed away, something snapped. It was like her center shifted, and an all-consuming anger pervaded her senses, taking over.

It happened so fast, her eyes lighting up, the building shaking, then the shattering blast.

When the dust finally settled, there was nothing left but a crater and a little girl lying amid the smoke and ashes. Curled up in a ball, shivering, she was the bomb still intact. She was the eye of the storm.

Feathers and Flowers: Lore summary

In the midst of doing some altering and rewrite some lore tidbits of my og story, Feathers and Flowers, and figured this would be a good time to make a simplistic masterpost of the rules and overall worldbuilding for the universe the story exists in! :3 All of it can be read under the cut uwu

As a side note please feel free to ask any questions!

Overworld Lore:

-World of F&F is similar to the real world but it is not it exactly. While things like technology and common beats of culture and languages can be likened to be the same, things like its history, cultures, religions, conflicts, and even locations are not.

-Takes place in what’s basically the approximation of the USA. More specifically, the fictional town Fiverstead, Georgia, known for its sprawling lakes, tall trees, and charming rustic cityscape.

-Spirits, Witches, and Magic are all common-place knowledge and, in some cases, considered “open-secrets”. No one doubts the existence of any of them, however magic use is limited to Spirits and Witches, and Spirits interacting with humans directly is uncommon (tho not necessarily rare).

-Common social issues IRL such as sexuality, gender identification, race, so on are not issues this world deals with, and instead is generally accepted. On the flipside, social issues in this world is often associated toward Spirits, Witches, and the existence of magic at all. Spirits, while generally accepted as real and inevitable, garners varied reactions depending on location. Overall, outside of specific context the direct interaction between humans and spirits is commonly seen as strange and unbecoming. Witches are generally seen as outcasts due to their connection to magic and, in proxy, spirits. Spirits in turn are wary and mistrusting toward all humans in general.

-Spirit/human interaction is generally limited to the use of shrines and guardian statues, which are very commonly seen throughout the country. Originally used as a way to regain the favor of Spirits, it eventually morphed into a long-standing tradition in which the person visiting the shrine is required to bring an offering. Offering types varies depending on the type of shrine visited, but in return a Spirit may leave something in place as a sign of acknowledgement or simply trade.

-There are 2 realms: the Mortal Realm and the Spirit Realm. They are two sides of the same coin and exist simultaneously. Without one, the other perishes. Only Spirits have the natural ability to travel between realms using leylines. Humans cannot travel between realms unless aided by a Spirit.

Spirit Lore:

-Spirits are a supernatural race with magical power and an important connection to the world of F&F. They are central to the core existence of the world and, should they die or disappear, has devastating consequences to the world as a whole. As such, they are generally thought and revered as gods/demigods, but are also viewed with a hint of fear.

-Spirits cannot and do not have children biologically. They are entirely sterile. Instead, Spirit children are “born” by what is known as The Heart Of The World, a location in which the mortal realm and the spirit realm collide. They are “born” as toddlers

-Spirits are very community-focused/driven; Despite Spirit children being designated an official guardian, the entire community participates in raising them. It’s very common for Spirits to have multiple parents, siblings, and family members. “Family” to a Spirit holds a different meaning to the traditional meaning to mortals.

-Spirits regard mortals as part of the world they are built to nurture and protect, however generally speaking they are wary and cautious of them due to past transgressions. Direct interaction and building any sort of relationship with a human is frowned upon (and in extreme cases, forbidden) in Spirit culture. The only form of communication that is actively encouraged is through the give/take/trade system established through the use of shrines.

-Given their affinity for magic, technology in the Spirit realm is more arcane-based than it is in the Mortal Realm. Magic often fulfills most of their basic needs and as such they don’t have much need things like fossil-fuels, gasoline, electricity.

Witch Lore:

-Witches (term is gender neutral) are humans born with the natural ability to use magic. While not rare they are a relatively uncommon occurrence; the chances of a Witch being born is high when at least one of their parents is one as well (chances become higher when both are witches), but it’s been known that a witch can be born from two completely mortal parents.

-Overall reaction to Witches varies depending on the country and culture but in the country the story takes place in, Witches are generally seen as outcasts. Once upon a time persecuted as the “evidence of sin” during a rapid rise, then fall, of a religious sect, country-wide tolerance has grown significantly since, however is still in need of improvement. Some pockets of this religion still exists within the states, albeit far more subtle to escape the critical public eye.

-While magical Witches are not as powerful as Spirits, nor can they become more powerful or on par with a Spirit in magical prowess.

-The magic of a Witch does not manifest until after the age of 5. Once it does, the magic will occur in short uncontrolled (but ultimately harmless) spurts before the body becomes accustomed and is able to control the magic by instinct. Further honing the skill requires training and practice, but as a whole all witches have a basic grasp on their magic power.

-Alchemy is an arcane practice developed by witches through use of inspiration of Spirit technology. While it can be used to create harmless gimmicks and enchantments, it’s largely a medicinal practice in which potion making is a core element to the practice. The blood of the witch is a key component to it working, hence why no human is able to perform it.

Basic Magic System:

-Both Witches and Spirits are naturally born with what’s called a “Tether”, which is the soul-binding connection an individual has to the world around them. Tethers can manifest itself into one of the three archetypes: Biome, Animal, Element. What the Witch or Spirit is tethered to determines what their magic is.

-Spirits always have 3 tethers whereas Witches will only ever have one. Witches never tether to Biomes, only Elements or Animals, whereas Spirits tether to all three.

-Magic in this world is mostly reliant on what you can manipulate within the environment around you, not by creating something from thin air. The only time a Spirit or Witch could get remotely close to creating magic through seemingly nothing is Fire and Electricity, which generally requires the witch to simply draw enough energy to produce their own.

-Witches can have Familiars, but this is generally limited to witches with an Animal tether.

A guide to Tech Witchcraft

Hello lovelies this has been something in which has been requested or talked about among my students on discord, so i wanted to make a guide covering all the information and decided to share it to the public of fellow witches , this is a brief introduction on tech witchcraft an the direction it is going now!

Technology and Witchcraft: A Guide to Techno Witchcraft

Introduction

With the day of age we now live, we go to a point where we are experiencing so much progression in the ways things are done, in our day to day life. Witchcraft is no expectation to this rule as witchcraft is constantly formatting and changing everyday through new age magic, While there is still much work to be done, There are some wonderful formulas in which you can use to boost your work through the power of electricity.

On top of the concepts of technology witches I will also be going over apps in which I enjoy and use, in which can help you with your witchy needs How does it work? Well, To start off I think we need to go back and look at what exactly magic is in the first place. Typically magic explains the manipulation and manifestation of energy through oneself and one's mind. It can be used to content with the conscious and subconscious mind.

It is idealistically all witchcraft leads to a goal typically under these things , however are also not limited to: 1) self improvement

2) to connect to the divine

3) to keep or follow a pre existing or new traditions/ lifestyle

4) Healing

5) Banishing

Now keeping this in mind , the tools of magic we use work because they are stored with intent and energy. All items are charged with energy from one self or divine energy as well. Any items we chose to work with will have energy and intent. Money does not really matter in the situation as long as you can get creative.

However this in mind there are correspondences with the elements In western culture the elements include: Air, Fire, Earth, Water and Spirit

In Eastern Culture the elements include : Wood, Iron, Fire, Earth and Water

Correspondence plays about 40 percent of the magic in the situation as long as something matches with an element or deity , and you can put energy and intent in it, it could potentially work.

We can see the light used in smartphones, computer screens, and so on and so forward the element of fire. In the early days of Greece when we looked at the elements: Light, Fire, Soul and Temperature were all considered things of fire, if something was warm ( such as the human body) it would be associated with fire.

For example:

Typically this is how one of the concepts of medicine started with human temperature, if a person was too hot , they needed water and earth to balance it out ( water and food) so using it in this retrospect works with the light being warm and as well as bright like a torch or flashlight. Often when a phone uses a lot of energy or a computer when gaming it also gets warm due to all the energy in which is needed.

Now in terms of Eastern Retrospect, the Metal element represents human advancements and Technology, the original concept was the “ Age of Iron” which was a time of building, machines etc. The Metal element shows the progression in humanity and the ability to create and go. In the Chinese Zodiac this is often empathized with the concept of the Metal Element being referred to as the “ Gold” element. Gold was typically something used in royal buildings and statues as well as Jade. In terms of eastern retrospect

Gods of the Technological World

Now, you may be thinking what kind of god would be willing to work with you through a screen? How is it possible to talk to a deity through screens?

There are gods in which are gods of human communication. Typically they are gods who are associated very closely with the throat chakra. The throat chakra represents the ability to communicate and as you know there are a million and one ways to communicate , one way humanity communications with clothes is through technology. If you're one of the first people reading this you may be reading this through a computer screen!

It is also worth mentioning even if you do not practice reiki, plenty of elements in western lore and gods focus on the energy of communication and

It is amazing to think about how men and woman have made it possible for this to happen.

Who are the gods of communication?

Mercury

(Mercury is a god in which I work with who represents Communication. The first time he talked to me was through a you tube video pop up in fact! , is was quite a experience )

Hermes

This is Mercury's Greek counterpart. Hermes is the god of: Communication, Medicine Transportation, Advancements and Commerce.

Papa Legba

He is a Caribbean God in Haitian Vodou which represents Communication Speech, and understanding

Al-Kutbay

A Nabataean god of Wisdom, Communication and Writing

Saraswati

The Hindu goddess of knowledge speech and creativity

Benzaiten (Benten)

The Japanese god who is the Counterpart of Saraswati, She represents the way the universe flows, water, advancements in society such as : Music , words, speech,knowledge etc

Nabu

A Babylonian god of wisdom and writing

Nidaba

A Sumerian goddess of communication writing, progression and learning

This is just to name a few of the major ones from different cultures. There are many many more They are all typically connected in some way with the throat chakra and throat energy systems that focus on communication and advancements that humans make on earth

With that being said technology has become a part of our day to day lives, one of our main forms of communication and such. Many gods adapt and change as we do, they are the ones who help steer the wheel in the way we go with technology and also more than enough use the energy in which cellphones and computers naturally generate to work with and manipulate if they need be.

The more and more we spend with items , our energy naturally ends up on the item, due to this we can fill items, apps etc with intent to help you manifest your energy and help you become the best you , now we can get into the question im sure you may have “how? “

First I will be going over some methods in which a closeted witch can use in replacement of items in which they may not be allowed to have at home due to the nervousness of being caught

A good way to manifest energy with pic collage and picture based altars are making them your wallpaper ! , and just spending time there meditating with your device and setting intention.

The Pros and Cons

Pros

With being able to draw , and spend personal time and energy allowed for more customization than store bought items, you are putting together the item from scratch which is beneficial. I find video games and such are easier to get your energy over and even gives you more room for items : ex: getting actual gold bars in real life is thousands of dollars, for one offering to Pluto, however in animal crossing this becomes a reality.

Cons

It can be harder to get your energy on the items if you are new to energy manifestation as well as conducting energy, you are also not able to touch your items, or use them in more direct spells: ex: pouring candle wax on items is impossible , being able to carve sigils in your items is also impossible as well as of right now. However despite this there is in a way more customization, and not everyone uses their altar as a workspace, rather just a place of worship.

While not all gods are gods of communication, gods can still talk through technology however it could be difficult for them if there are not the right correspondences made in order to make communication.

Now there is an app coming soon called build an altar, and it could be a nice doorway for more customization but for now we do not have that option! the future looks bright however !

Even if you have a main altar at home, having a digital altar can be helpful on the go, if you're traveling and with friends or family!

Grimoires / Book of Shadows

There are few cons when looking at making a digital grimoire, if anything it can be a saving grace if your handwriting is awful or you prefer to do digital art. You can easily transport your digital grimoire on any device and you can also prevent page loss and also it is easier to edit. Some Apps for Grimoires Include :

Tumblr ( you can make private / public books to share)

Twitter ( you can also make private blogs as well

You can also put them on a USB when you're done to carry it around and share , and even divide information like it pro-tip: Draw Small Sigils with Sharpies for protection / binding spells

Cons

One thing to consider on this method is this method: some people feel as if using ink is better for sealing and writing spells as well, and it is more personal with adding energy/ easier to put in energy to your grimoire as well as making binding spells to protect your grimoire, however it all comes down to personal taste nor is it impossible to make a binding spell for your grimoire either.

This is an app in which you can use for learning tarot, it does an extraordinary job with correspondence meetings and has small quizzes and is set up like a small academy in which to help you

Golden thread Tarot Deck is a Tarot App in which you can do your daily tarot and do tarot readings and also has spreads and such you can use too. Golden Thread Tarot also sells their own decks which are pricey however extremely beautiful and worth the money if you want a physical deck

Seventh Sphere

A app by Tina Gong focusing on Lenormand Tarot Divination

Since Lenormand is a newer form of tarot, and harder form of tarot, it has some meanings in which you could read the cards/ base your interpretations about.

Co-star

While this app does not have all the information in a natal chart it is good to get a general look on your chart when looking at all of your planetary placings and have your chart on the go. There is also horoscopes and you can add and compare charts with your friends

My Moon Phases

This is a app used to track moon phases based on your location and shows percentages very good for using it if you want to know what types of moon magic you can use and how to celebrate and manifest accordingly

Wicca Calendar

This is a app in which has all the wiccan holidays together in a wheel along with dates and count out timer to keep the hype of the next holiday coming up

Stone

This is an App that helps you identify gemstones and rocks along with their properties and in information about them

Plant-Net

This is a app to help you identify plants just by taking a picture of them, and then it takes you directly to their Wikipedia page

Head Space

An app for guided meditations and allows you to keep track of your practices with logs and goals. It helps you manifest your energy with professionals hypnotherapists and helps teach lessons on how to meditate and mindfulness. While there is a paid membership it is most certainly worth it for those who love meditation

this has been a long time coming

ive detached from jack / dont watch jack anymore. i’ve poured so much into this story that involved the egos that i just....can’t let it go. so, im making ocs for the story instead.

inspired by @lilakennedy . . . here is some info about my boys

Marvin the Magnificent➜ Marvin Lir MacKenna

age: 27- from the 1920s

Brown wavy hair that goes to past his ears a bit

Blue eyes

Height: 5′7″

irish & welsh ( mother from wales father from ireland )

an illusionist / performer

Stage performance & regular attitude are a complete 180. Very bold on stage and confident but once he is off he is more reserved and calm

Best friends with Daniel

Knew Daniel for years, since they were around 10 years old. Extremely close bond.

Doesn’t believe in spirits but is very cautious / superstitious

Gets powers whenever he and Daniel accidentally summon Phonus at Daniel’s Birthday/Halloween party. When it was just the two of them alone.

He tries to attack Phonus since the monster killed Daniel

but once he made contact with the demon, he was immediately teleported into our timeline. He took some of Phonus’s powers as a result

He ends up getting burn marks on his arms/hands and face due to trying to physically fight Phonus when he was furious

Riley finds him and helps him on his feet to find a place to stay

The two of them become close friends eventually, it takes a long time for Marv to warm up to people in this strange new environment- still tortured by that night.

He blames himself for Daniels death every day.

With his new unknown powers, he tries to go back in time to stop all this from happening.

He opens up about his powers to Riley and the truth.

Riley is beyond amazed that powers and magic exist, he tries to help Marv with his powers.

He ends up needing to find a sort of job to stay at his home, so he tries the one thing he loved- entertaining people. With his magic, he dumbfounds audiences.

However, once things were just looking up, his fire magic (the strongest) goes wrong.

He ends up catching a stage set on fire, causing injuries to hundreds.

He panics. Riley tries to calm him down. But he can’t take it, he is convinced that he is destined to cause harm with these powers.

He vanishes to a place by the sea and isolates himself, causing people to believe he died in the fire accident.

He spends his time trying to prefect time travel and is consumed by isolation. though, he does attract wild life to him. they are very at ease with him

Refuses to use his fire magic

One day, he comes across Viktor’s body on the shore. He takes him in quickly to his small home that he protected in case Phonus ever finds him.

He revives Viktor to come to. The stranger is a total mess and he tries to heal the man, but Viktor grabs him on reflex. So the man patches himself up

The two live together for a few months as the injuries heal up

Viktor convinces him to visit Riley again, so he does.

He teleports there and leaves a note stating that he is alive. He can’t bring himself to see Riley face to face

In the end, he tries to fight off Phonus. He fails miserably

He returns to his home, having Riley there with him. He gives Riley his powers because he doesn’t want to die and these powers go back to Phonus.

He trusts Riley with his life

Once Riley is given the powers, he passes away.

When his body is all alone peacefully at rest in the home, without any magic to protect it, Phonus finds the body

But no magic

The demon still takes the body. Using it to wake him up again and look into his mind to find out where the powers have gone

He remains a soul bounded victim to Phonus and reunites with Daniel

His wife actually works with Viktor and didn’t know at the time

his wife divorces him because, even though she does love him, she can’t keep working like this just to get by. she needs security and they dont have it.

he is allowed to see his kids still but at the time it was very painful for him

he lives alone in that apartment, often calling Viktor to talk and invite him over so he doesn’t do shit he regrets

he talks about how Viktor is so lucky to have such a wonderful life and wishes he could have that (since he doesn’t know the truth)

Viktor and Noah become very close and often have their kids over at each others houses

he hears news that Viktor is missing and becomes a mess. he is alone and doesnt know what to do.

he tries to make it known that he is missing online, making posts and videos as much as he can to get peoples attention

he visits the Valentin house hold and offers his wife any help thats needed, despite knowing all the turmoil they went though. he cares about the kids and doesn’t want them to worry.

age: 32 -from our timeline

he never gets mad at her. he blames himself

he thinks he isnt perfect enough

he becomes extremely distant and cold, more than before. never knowing when to bring it up

the two of them grow apart but still live together

they make sure not to worry their children though, they dont want them to think its their fault.

he never brings up this information to Noah because he doesn’t want him to worry.

very envious of Noah though and wish he would smack him. Noah has a wife that loves him and he wishes that Noah could wake up and see that and fix his actions.

he does break down one night and tell Noah everything that happened

one day at the office, a man came in with a horrible neck injury.

he typically sees people who just need some medication or the worst injury being a bite from a dog, but even that wasn’t bad.

he rushes to take care of the stranger. once they were alone for a brief second, he gets trapped inside.

Phonus used Daniels body in order to get to the Doctor. He attacks and possesses Viktor.

Once Phonus is done using Viktor, he takes him to a cliff near the sea

He is snaps his neck and lets the body fall into the ocean.

Eventually, he washes up to shore where Marvin is

he stays with marvin for months while he heals up himself, he refuses to get any magic help

once he decides to leave marvin has a hard time letting go, he is worried viktor will fall victim to phonus again

he leaves to go home but once he reaches the steps, phonus finds him again.

Jackieboy Man➜ Riley Lee Young

age: 23 - from our timeline

was kicked out of his home. Viktor found out about it and bought him a small apartment to live in. (he would of offered Riley to stay but he has issues at home that he doesn’t want to subject Riley to on the daily)

he is the girls big brother figure and he loves to pay pretend with them !

He meets Marvin and they eventually become friends

he helps Marvin gain back confidence, giving him a place to stay, and helps him actually feel . . at home in this timeline

when he finds out the truth that marvin is from the 1920s and has powers he cannot get over how cool it is! calling him a super hero and showing him comics that he has. he helps marvin try to get a better hold on the powers

he was around whenever the fire accident with marvins powers happen, he tries to calm marvin down but ends up alone. left to wonder what happened to his friend.

When he has to start university up again he has to let the Valentin family know that he can’t be around as much as before but will try to help out if needed

Viktor’s wife ends up calling Riley one day and begs him to come to the house as soon as he can for Viktor has been missing for days now

Riley puts up posters and gets the news out that Viktor is missing as much as he can around the city.

He still goes to university but spends a lot of time in the Valentin household. Visiting on holidays and the girls birthdays. Having no news of Viktor.

he later on gains marvins powers, his mainly being electricity and strength.

he is set on finding phonus and fixing things for marvins sake

Jameson Jackson➜ Daniel Edmund Thomas

age: 27 - from the 1920s

slicked short black hair

a charming, bold, charismatic man

an actor and musician, exceptionally good on piano

very witty and clever

lives a rather extravagant life

very close friends with Marvin, trusts him with his life

on his 27th birthday on Halloween, he throws a party

he loves to mess around with guests and asks Marvin if they can have a a seance

they try it to entertain the guests, but nothing happens (to marvins relief)

the party continues on till its just marvin and him by the end of the night

they try again to contact from the beyond

they succeed

he comes face to face with the demon. an invisible hand causing him to kill himself. making Marvin watch

he becomes Antiphonus’s personal toy

his mind becomes warped and he loses all sense of who he used to be

he tries to fight back, but once he does, his tongue is cut out of his mouth. never to be able to voice for help again

his body now bound to Phonus becomes a personal pin cushion. being cut open and inspected to see how far humans have come with healing themselves. to see how far a human body can handle things

being trapped with phonus he starts to believe that Marvin caused his death. he believes everything phonus tells him and is set on killing marvin

he becomes very aware of realities all thanks to Phonus.

an immortal being / demon

seems to have been around for centuries

first appears invisible, then a shadow figure, to a pitch black faceless figure that takes on more of a human shape - till finally, he appears to look like Daniel

he is fascinated with humans, very curious and destructive

he takes Daniel in as a host. he rests inside of Daniel’s body till he is strong enough to mimic the physical outer appearance of him

when he possesses people becomes stronger. he doesnt have full control right away, it takes him a bit of time to warm up once again to how powerful he used to be.

he can see into his victims mind when possessing them, he knows all what Daniel knows / remembers. Daniels fame, fears, friendship. family, love- he knows it all.

He uses this to his advantage to keep Daniel around without fighting him back- using Marvin against him

he is after the powers that he accidentally gave to Marvin on impact

he travels to the dimensions he has access to and time lines in hopes to find Marvin, taking Daniel along with no choice

he lands in our dimension and timeline to sense that his powers are close by

He ends up sabotaging Marvin’s performance with fire magic in order to kill him or capture him but it fails- he looses sight of him

While he is searching through the streets, he over hears talk about the human body. He comes across Viktors practice building and opens the door a crack. He can sense so many souls and blood in that building and gets vastly curious. He notices people injured and ill, waiting for care. He hatches an idea.

He returns to Daniel and possesses his body. He takes Daniel to an alley way close to the building, away from the eyes of others. He grabs the sharpest thing he can find and plunges it deep into the side of his neck and carves it out slowly and rips it out.

He quickly makes Daniel reach the building and barges in, causing everyone to look on in horror. The nurses there rush to his aid as Phonus makes Daniel gasp and hold his neck to try to stop the bleeding. Nurses page for Viktor asap as they get Daniel to a stretcher and room fast. Viktor arrives shortly after and is fast to help Daniel. Daniel just looks at Viktor and tries to nod.

Once the nurses leave for a brief moment and its just him and Viktor, Phonus makes the door lock them inside.

Viktor goes to inject him with medication but Daniel reaches out and grabs Viktors arm. He say to Daniel that he knows needles are scary but you need this now, let go please. Daniel sits up and twists Viktors arm, causing Viktor to wince in pain while looking shocked.

He grabs Daniels hand with his free one and tries to pry it away, but can't. Daniel kicks him away, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground. He gets up from the bed. The lights inside the room begin to flicker faster and faster. Electronics in the room flickering on and off, radios and tv consumed with fast stations, fluctuating volumes, and static. Viktor gets to his feet and hears all this noise and sees this horror in front of him.

Phonus leaves Daniels body, causing Daniel's wound to disappear. Phonus stands in front of him.

He gets inside of Viktors mind to find all that he can about the human body and the amount of pain that it can handle.

He sees in Viktors mind a young man with curly blonde hair. And for a brief moment inside of Viktors mind, he sees Marvin

in the end he ends up taking Marvin captive but finds that the powers are gone.

he keeps marvin around because he sees too, that he gave that blonde boy his powers

so he is on the hunt for Riley

Aluminium prices hit their highest in more than 10 years on Monday after reports of political turmoil in bauxite mining hub Guinea triggered concerns over raw material shortages.

Guinea is the world’s top supplier of bauxite – the ore used to produce aluminium – to China, the biggest producer and consumer of the metal used in construction, cars and aeroplanes, Reuters reported.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank files IPO papers with Sebi

Private sector lender Tamilnad Mercantile Bank has filed preliminary papers with markets regulator Sebi to raise funds through an initial public offering.

The initial public offering (IPO) comprises fresh issue of 15,827,495 equity shares and an offer-for-sale of up to 12,505 equity shares by selling shareholders, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), PTI reported.

Shipping industry proposes levy to speed up zero carbon future

Leading shipping associations have proposed creating a global levy on carbon emissions from ships to help speed up the industry’s efforts to go greener.

Italian scooter maker Piaggio said on Monday it had set up a consortium with Honda Motor Co., KTM AG and Yamaha Motor Co. to encourage the use of swappable batteries for electric motorcycles and light electric vehicles.

The Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC) aims to broaden the use of light electric vehicles, such as scooters, mopeds and motorcycles, and support a more sustainable management of their batteries, PTI reported citing a joint statement.

India is in talks with Russian energy producer Novatek to buy a 9.9% stake in the Novatek-led Arctic LNG-2 project, Reuters reported citing Interfax news agency.

U.K. watchdog urges more powers over crypto promotions

Britain’s Financial watchdog said that creating a regulatory regime for the centralised world of crypto assets will take careful thought.

The country’s Finance Ministry has already consulted publicly on whether some crypto asset promotions need regulating, Reuters reported.

“There are no assets or real world cashflows underpinning the price of speculative digital tokens, even the better known ones like Bitcoin, and many cannot even boast a scarcity value,” Financial Conduct Authority Chair Charles Randell said in a speech.

BMW orders up $24 billion of batteries as EV demand grows

BMW AG has boosted orders for battery cells to keep pace with accelerating demand for electric cars that made up for more than 11% of deliveries during the half of the year, Bloomberg reported.

The German carmaker now has contracts for more than 20 billion euros ($23.8 billion) of batteries, up from 12 billion euros previously, CEO Oliver Zipse said in an interview.

The cells are destined for i4 sedans, iX sport utility vehicles and other models BMW is producing through 2024, the report noted and added that the company plans to start switching to a new generation of batteries the following year.

Lupin, TB Alliance join hands for new therapy for drug-resistant Tuberculosis

Drugmaker Lupin on Monday said non-profit drug developer TB Alliance has granted it a non-exclusive licence to manufacture anti-TB drug pretomanid as part of the three-drug BPaL regimen.

The Mumbai-based company intends to commercialise the medicine in around 140 countries and territories, including many of the highest TB burden nations around the world, according to a PTI report.

The BPaL regimen offers the TB community the first all-oral, six-month treatment for highly resistant forms of drug resistant-TB.

Oil falls $1 after deep Saudi price cuts spur demand concerns

Oil prices fell about $1 on Monday, extending losses after the world’s top exporter Saudi Arabia slashed crude contract prices for Asia over the weekend, reflecting well-supplied global markets and concerns over the outlook for demand, Reuters reported.

Brent crude futures for November fell 1.4%, to $71.63 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for October was down 95 cents, or 1.4%.

Goldman Sachs to list Petershill asset management unit for $750 million

Goldman Sachs will list asset management unit Petershill Partners on the London Stock Exchange for $750 million, it said on Monday.

Petershill, which takes minority stakes in private equity and hedge funds, will be a standalone company operated by the Goldman Sachs Asset Management team, according to a Reuters report.

The business takes advantage of its relationship with Goldman Sachs to source attractive acquisitions in alternative asset management, the firm said. Petershill itself has no fixed assets but holds positions in 19 alternative asset managers.

Three-month aluminium on the London Metal Exchange rose as much as 1.8% to $2,775.50 a tonne, highest since May 2011.

Oil giant ADNOC to sell minimum 7.5% stake in drilling unit’s IPO

ADNOC Drilling said on Monday it intended to list on the Abu Dhabi bourse, with its parent company Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) selling a minimum 7.5% stake in an initial public offering (IPO).

This is the second public flotation of a company owned by the Abu Dhabi oil giant after it listed ADNOC Distribution, the largest operator of petrol stations and convenience stores in the United Arab Emirates, in 2017, a Reuters report noted.

European banks still booking profits in tax havens, report says

Top banks in Europe continue to use tax havens to book chunks of profits, a trend that has changed little since 2014 despite country-by-country disclosures becoming mandatory, the EU Tax Observatory said in a report on Monday.

Disclosures from 36 major European banks showed they booked a total of 20 billion euros ($23.77 billion) or about 14% of total profits, in tax havens, even though few were employed there, Reuters reported.

Profits booked by banks in tax havens work out at around 238,000 per employee, compared with 65,000 euros in non-tax havens, the report said.

India’s August gold imports nearly double on price correction

India’s gold imports in August nearly doubled from a year ago to their highest level in five months on an improvement in demand and as a correction in prices prompted jewellers to ramp up purchases for the festive season, Reuters reported, citing a government source.

India imported 121 tonnes of gold in August, compared to 63 tonnes a year earlier, the report noted. In value terms, August imports surged to $6.7 billion from $3.7 billion a year ago.

Rupee falls 4 paise to 73.06 against U.S. dollar in early trade

The Indian rupee declined 4 paise to 73.06 against the U.S. dollar in opening trade today, tracking a firm American currency, PTI reported.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 73.02 against the dollar, then fell further to 73.06, registering a fall of 4 paise over its previous close.

Forex traders said a rally in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund inflows supported the rupee and contained the depreciation bias.

Maruti Suzuki hikes vehicle prices by up to 1.9%

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Monday said it has increased prices of its entire product range, except Celerio, by up to 1.9% with immediate effect, according to PTI.

In a regulatory filing, the company said that it has taken the decision to hike prices due to an increase in various input costs. This is MSI’s third price hike this year.

The auto major has already raised prices in January and April this year, with an overall hike of around 3.5%, the news agency noted.

Saudi Arabia slashes crude prices to Asia

Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, slashed prices of all crude grades to Asian customers in October versus September, but left prices to north-western Europe and the United States steady, a Reuters report noted.

The deep price cuts come as lockdowns across Asia to combat the highly infectious delta variant of the coronavirus have capped fuel demand in the region. Global oil supplies are also increasing as the OPEC+ is raising output by 400,000 barrels per day a month between August and December.

Embattled Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, said it will restrict its services in Singapore days after the city state’s central bank said it should stop offering payment services, according to a Reuters report.

APY also dominated in terms of growth rate of the subscriber base, with a gain of 33% on-year in fiscal year ending March 2021, the report noted.

Govt’s excise collection jumps 48% in Apr-July

The government’s collections from levy of excise duty on petroleum products have jumped 48% in the first four months of the current fiscal year, with the incremental mop-up being 3-times of the repayment liability of legacy oil bonds in the full fiscal, official data showed.

Data available from the Controller General of Accounts in the Union Ministry of Finance showed excise duty collections during April-July 2021 surging to over ₹1 lakh crore, from ₹67,895 crore mop-up in the same period of the previous fiscal.

We know that similar blood vessel changes occur in other conditions such as Raynaud’s disease, so this was an appealing theory to explain migraine symptoms. If migraines were due to exaggerated blood vessel constriction and dilation in some people, that could explain why migraines are so common, temporary, and not associated with any permanent injury to the brain or other parts of the body. However, this theory is now considered wrong. The current theory of migraine Current evidence (as described in this review) suggests that migraine headaches begin with an abnormal activation of cells in the nervous system that spreads across the brain. This leads to inflammation near pain-sensitive parts of the brain, the release of chemical messengers, and changes in the sensitivity of nerves that carry pain signals. One such device, the Cefaly Dual, has been available by prescription to prevent migraine headaches since 2014. It was just cleared as an over-the-counter device to prevent and treat migraine headaches. Clearance differs from FDA approval for effectiveness and safety for drugs and lifesaving technology like defibrillators; it allows medical device makers to market a product because the FDA considers it safe and similar to other legally marketed products. The evidence supporting nerve stimulation to prevent or treat migraine includes the following: A study published in 2013 enrolled 67 people with migraines and compared electrical stimulation to sham stimulation for 20 minutes each day as a way to prevent headaches. Over three months, fewer headaches and a reduced need for migraine medication were observed among those getting the real treatment. Improvement by at least 50% was noted in 38% of study subjects, but in only 12% of the sham group. In a 2013 survey of more than 2,300 people using electrical stimulation for 20 minutes each day for two months to prevent migraine, just over half reported satisfaction with the device and a willingness to buy it. A 2019 study randomly assigned 106 people with an active migraine headache to receive electrical stimulation over the forehead or a sham treatment (minimal electrical stimulation) for one hour. Those receiving treatment reported pain reduction of nearly 60% while those in the sham group had only 30% pain reduction. What about downsides? None of these studies reported serious side effects related to electrical stimulation. While a tingling sensation at the site of stimulation was common, few perceived it as painful or bothersome enough to stop treatment. Cost is a consideration. The device’s maker currently lists its standard price as $499, and states that it is not covered by health insurance. It does come with a 60-day money-back guarantee, which could help users decide if it’s worth the price. Finally, there’s the time commitment. To prevent migraines, users are advised to apply the device for 20 minutes each day. For treatment of acute headache, a 60-minute treatment is recommended. The bottom line This treatment has been around since at least 2014 and is certainly no cure. So, electrical stimulation for migraine can hardly be considered a game changer for most migraine sufferers. But it seems to me it’s not empty hype either. There is reasonable evidence that it’s safe and at least somewhat effective. The recent action by the FDA to make the Cefaly Dual available without a prescription should make it more accessible. And, by any measure, a modestly effective, drug-free way to treat migraine is a positive development. Hopefully, future studies of this device will clarify who is most likely to benefit by using it. But we need even better options. Advances in our understanding of how migraines develop and ongoing research should provide them. 2011 – Again a Strategic Nuclear Restraint Regime (SNRR) pertain to Missile Restraint, Peaceful Resolution of Conflict and Conventional Balance.

2016 – A bilateral arrangement on non-testing of nuclear weapons.

These propositions, however, were met with cold feet by India, which not only decreased nuclear weapons control possibilities in the region, but also pressured Pakistan to enter the nuclear arms race. Unlike India, Pakistan has no offensive strategic approach or aggressive hegemonic design rather, its nuclear capability is purely defensive. PRIME MINISTER’S LEADERSHIP PRAISED – The UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the OECS, Didier Trebucq is giving Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley a thumbs up for a recent move she made on the international stage. He said he was inspired by Mottley’s leadership in the cause of multilateralism and strong support for the ethos of the Charter she clearly communicated to the world at the 74th UN General Assembly last month. The Resident Coordinator said the Prime Minister’s call for dialogue to reign over the use of force, as well as respect for the rule of law, human rights and democracy, would guarantee the rights of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean. He was speaking at Thursday night’s UN Day reception, held at UN House, Hastings, Christ Church. The event was attended by Mottley who delivered her first speech at UN House since becoming Prime Minister. “I also listened intently to your passionate plea on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States for world leaders, to act now to halt and reverse climate change. “Please rest assured that the UN Team is and will continue to support you and other governments in the sub-region in every way possible,” Trebucq said. The Resident Coordinator announced that Barbados would benefit from two new joint programmes, including the recently created UN Joint SDG Fund, focusing on shock responsive and universal social protection. “The second under the UN Human Security Trust Fund will build resilience of the agriculture and fisheries sectors through women empowerment,” he said. She said that while there are those who are justifiably concerned about the on-going drought and lack of access to water, the situation is not only a result of rusted pipes that were laid more than a century ago, but also due to a shortage of the replenishment of ground water. “And we are not unique in this world. Whether it is in Morocco, whether it is in Peru, whether it is in the United States of America in the mid west, whether it is in India, regardless of where we are on this earth countries are being brought to their knees because of their inability to provide the most basic commodity for life to our people,” she said. The Prime Minister addressed the issue on Thursday night as she delivered the feature address at a reception at the United Nations House to observe UN Day, when she repeated that it was necessary for Barbadians to stay the course, remain steadfast and recognise that some of the battles being faced are not confined to the island’s borders but go beyond. “In fact, we live at a unique time in the world’s history again where the majority of our battles are in fact across the globe. And I must confess that as basic as it seems, and as righteous as it seems to defend these principles you cannot take it for granted.” Mottley recalled that while in Geneva, Switzerland recently she was reminded that the notion of the arctic melting “may be a matter of grave concern for those of us in our part of the world”. “But for most people in powerful countries, it is an opportunity to be able to determine and to carve out who should have the rights for exploitation of the vast fossil fuel resources of that part of the world. She noted that the need for a regional professional nurses’ exam was recognised since the 1930s and it was nothing short of cavalier to deviate from these well-founded standards. “There are problems recently with the preparation of nursing students with the Barbados Community College (BCC) and I will address that, but I want to say that the regulatory body for nursing practice in Barbados, which is the Nursing Council, was established since 1932 and it was determined since then, the need to have an established standard of application and licensing,” Waterman explained. “It is important to ensure that after the students have had a period of training within the college and have had practical training, they must be at a level to take a professional exam, just like all professional bodies such as law and medicine, Waterman noted. “If you remove the licensing exam then what you would be doing is watering down the profession. We certainly in the professional nurses’ body would not agree with this in any way.” The high failure rate of Barbadian nursing students taking the regional nurses’ examination presents a major stumbling block to the country’s ability to address its chronic nursing shortage. Currently the nursing shortage has become so critical that it has hindered the full rollout of several initiatives in the Ministry of Health and has resulted in Prime Minister Mia Mottley taking the decision to recruit 400 nurses from Ghana to fill the present void. However, the BNA head revealed that steps had been taken by the BCC that should ensure a much higher pass rate in the very near future. “There are problems with the recent high failure rates of students because the problems have stemmed from administration of the nursing syllabus and preparation of the students for the exam. The BCC has done a full panel review and investigations where they brought in specialists from PAHO to advise on the curriculum, methodology and evaluation process. In addition, specialist nursing professors were brought in from the University of the West Indies and they have now put a number of corrective measures in place. So, we shall await the outcome of this, and we expect to see some improvement,” said Waterman. (BT)

ENERGY SWITCH – Government is proposing the establishment of a co-operative credit union to give residents an opportunity to invest in the expansion of the renewable energy sector here. Officials in the ministry of Energy and Water Resources made the disclosure today as they addressed a special meeting of the Barbados Cooperatives Societies at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams said the biggest single drain on the country’s foreign exchange was the importation of fossil fuel, and he insisted that Barbados simply could not afford it anymore. Ditching his prepared speech as he addressed the gathering of credit union representatives, lawyers, regulators and other stakeholders, Abrahams said he was aware that the financial sector was awash with cash and it was about time that there be a “pooling of resources for a common good”. “There is a lot of money in the credit union and the cooperative sector in Barbados. A lot of your charters are very limited in what you are allowed to invest in and the investments that you are allowed to do. You have a choice now. You can stick with what I call the outdated mode of doing things or you can actually start now to embrace the change now that has to happen in Barbados,” said Abrahams. Stating that government was not playing when it came to making Barbados 100 per cent reliant on renewable forms of energy by 2030, he said if necessary Government would bring legislation to influence credit unions to invest in the sector. “If you invest, every member that you have on your books is an investor . . . so it is an exciting time for you. I know that for many of you your framework is very specific about how you can invest. There is something called special general meetings and something called annual general meetings where you can change your charters and change your rules,” he said. “If legislative intervention needs to happen to allow the cooperatives to get into this space then legislative intervention will happen. But it makes no sense for everybody else to come into Barbados now to benefit from what is a fantastic investment opportunity and the average Barbadian cannot benefit because we have tied the hands of the cooperatives,” he added. The proposal put forward by the Electric Light and Power Advisory Committee (ELPAC) is for the establishment of a “special purpose” cooperative to be called the Barbados Energy Sustainable Co-op (BESCO). Membership of the co-op would be opened to all co-operatives, energy suppliers, energy consumers and energy workers in Barbados. It is also proposed that there be a membership fee of $100 per member and members would hold a minimum of $50 in shares in the new cooperative. Abrahams expressed disappointment that Barbados “sat back and allowed everybody else to run with solar water heating” despite being the pioneer in that area. And he said government could simply not allow the same to happen in the renewable energy sector. He insisted that now was the time for locals to invest in the sector, pointing out that a lot of people were “knocking at the door trying to get into Barbados”. He said he was recently in Miami where he met with a number of players in the solar and wind spaces and they were eager to invest in Barbados because they saw it as a favourable investment. However, Abrahams insisted that while the island required major investment, it should include locals and government would make the investment climate attractive. “We don’t want to be looking at big businesses only. We don’t want to be looking at the major conglomerates. We don’t want to be looking only at people outside with lots of money who can afford to spend in Barbados. It is the intention that in this new space a certain percentage of all investments should be to Barbadians,” said Abrahams. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources Francine Blackman reiterated the need for the cooperative, saying it was the massive costs associated with the importation of fossil fuel that has resulted in the increased thrust towards growing the renewable energy sector. “We believe that the cooperative movement has been a successful model for business in Barbados and is well placed to participate in the transition towards the 100 per cent renewable energy [targets]. We believe the time is opportune for the development of an energy cooperative,” said Blackman. “It is my humble opinion that an energy cooperative can have an essential role in supporting government’s achievement in its energy and by extension the climate objective of a fossil free and socially sound transformation,” she said. She said the development of an energy cooperative would be part of a wider comprehensive policy governing “new energy structures” in Barbados. Member of the ELPAC Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Browne said the suggestions for a Barbados Energy Sustainable Co-op (BESCO) was just “a starting point”, adding that the name was not set in stone. “It is not that we are seeking to get the cooperatives to bring their money and put into the new cooperatives. What we want you to bring to the new cooperative is the experience you have developed over the last 40 years and the trust that you have developed among ordinary Barbadians,” said Browne. (BT)

TOURISM BOSS TO LEAVE HIS POST AT YEAR END – William Billy Griffith, the man credited with improving Barbados’ tourism product and overseeing record numbers in the sector despite the prevailing difficult economic times, has quit his job as chief executive officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI). Today in a press release, the BTMI board of directors announced that Griffith had tendered his resignation, effective December 31, 2019. The release said Griffith had given the organisation an opportunity to recruit a new leader and to ensure a smooth transition as his contract comes to an end. Chairman of the Board, Sunil Chatrani, thanked Griffith for his significant contribution to the organisation since its inception in 2014 and wished him the best in his future endeavours. Chatrani added that the search for a new CEO would commence immediately as the organisation transitioned into a public/private sector partnership (PPP). Quoted in the release on his departure, Griffith said: “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have given back to my country by contributing to its most valued sector. I am also extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve in the past five years. Barbados is a truly unique destination with so much to offer, and it is with pride that we have worked as a team to showcase that to the world.” During his tenure, Griffith spearheaded a 30 per cent increase in visitor arrivals to Barbados to an all-time record of 682,000 in 2018, as air capacity to the island also grew by 22 per cent. Total visitor expenditure also increased by 34 per cent during the period to USD $1.2 billion in 2018. Griffith oversaw high-profile partnerships on behalf of the BTMI that led to the introduction of new flights to the island including Copa Airlines direct from Panama which began in 2018, and the Lufthansa direct service from Frankfurt, Germany, which commences on Monday. His leadership of the organization also resulted in the destination receiving several major awards during his tenure as well as his personal achievement of being awarded Caribbean Tourism Director of the Year 2019 by Carib Journal earlier this year. Griffith wished the BTMI continued success and lauded its talented and hard working staff. Griffith said he was looking forward to his new professional journey. Tonight, informed sources told Barbados TODAY that Griffith’s departure was on the cards “one way or the other”. The senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Griffith was being constructively forced out of the position. “Billy has an outstanding record, not only here but in Bermuda, throughout the region, all over the place. But he was appointed by the last Government and the current one is cleaning house irrespective of how well one is doing or not. Look around Barbados and you can count the chairmen and CEOs that are getting chopped. Some might want sending home but you don’t compromise top producers. Billy’s record at BTMI has been second to none,” he said. The official said the appointment of Petra Roach as head of global markets basically was Griffith’s “death knell”. “Roach was Billy’s subordinate and the Government placed her in a position that shadowed the CEO’s. This was duplication of positions because Billy functioned basically as the person overseeing Europe, US, and such, so what was he supposed to do other than leave,” he asked? NEPOTISM – Even though not always illegal, it is often seen as one of the clearest examples of corruption, particularly at the state level. Nepotism, or accusations of such, has been on the lips of many Barbadians, as it was recently announced that Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland would be the executive chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital; an institution in dire need of a lifeline. The executive chairman will report directly to the Ministry of Health in an effort to minimise red tape. Make no mistake: this is no Jared Kushner or Ivanka Trump situation. Ivanka, daughter of US president Donald Trump, accompanied by her husband Jared Kushner, has been trekking across the globe as the President’s “advisor”, representing the superpower country at high-level meetings with influential world leaders. While neither Ivanka nor Jared had the experience or expertise to advise a president, a cursory glance at Bynoe-Sutherland’s Curriculum Vitae would show that she is more than up to the task at hand. She is a seasoned professional who has been at the helm of the Barbados Family Planning Association, a crucial player in the delivery of healthcare in the island. Bynoe-Sutherland has also served as Director of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP). Her work as an attorney-at-law as well as in HIV and a health planner will be advantageous and have great potential for breathing new life into the QEH. But the optics of declaring the spouse of a minister as the one to assume a position which was created for them is enough to create pause, especially when it comes from a Government which has repeatedly said that a large part of the mess it is now tasked with cleaning up is as a result of corruption. As was to be expected, the decision has not gone down well in some quarters. Outspoken trade unionist and opposition senator Caswell Franklyn described the choice as “shameful”, while Senator Crystal Drakes warned that any action which may be vaguely understood as corruption or nepotism will work to the Government’s detriment. “We have to make sure that transparency and accountability are the order of the day,” she reminded. This is not to say that Bynoe-Sutherland’s expertise could not be engaged at the state-run institution. Let’s not forget that before this new role, she served as Chairman of the QEH’s board. In this position, the proven professional could still inform the strategic direction of the QEH. Barbadians watching these moves may also remember the controversy that engulfed former BLP Member of Parliament and Minister, Liz Thompson, whose husband was embroiled in scandals involving construction and renovation contracts he had been awarded. And not so far away from home, Vincentian Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves appointed his son Camillo Gonsalves as the Minister of Finance. It was a role the Prime Minister held for several years before passing it on directly to his son. Unfortunately, in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Barbados, nepotism is a common practice. What makes the situation that more distasteful is the fact that Government, under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme, recently sent home 1500 workers from the public sector. Were none of these people qualified to do the job? Was any real effort made to find someone else? Or was Bynoe-Sutherland given the job automatically? Since taking up office last year, Prime Minister Mia Mottley has spoken much about transparency and stamping out corruption, but such hirings sometimes give Barbadians the impression that every time we take two steps forward, we take three backwards. WELCH’S SEAT BY VOTES PROPOSAL – Professor Emeritus Pedro Welch has repeated his call for a constitutional amendment to ensure that a party that gets a reasonable proportion of votes be guaranteed a seat in the House of Assembly. He was speaking during the lecture topic Sir James Cameron Tudor: The Making of a Power-broker extraordinaire at the James Tudor Institute of Politics- sponsored event at the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management, University of the West Indies, on Thursday night. Welch said he previously mooted the suggestion “when it came to the question of constitutional amendments … which pointed out that in this country we had come close to a situation like what happened last year on more than one occasion”. He recalled that “the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) was reduced to three [seats] and the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) reduced to two. And I made the point that if in any of those cases, if there was no agreement between the three or two (seat holders), you would have had a constitutional crisis. I recommended that one should consider at some time constitutional amendments that would deal with this problem because it is not only happening in Barbados, but in other parts of the Caribbean. “My suggestion is in the future, some consideration be placed on introducing a constitutional amendment that would ensure parties in Barbados which get a reasonable proportion of the vote should have the right to have a seat assigned,” said Welch, a retired deputy principal of UWI and former dean. OVER $1M TO BE SPEND ON SOME NHC ESTATES – The National Housing Corporation (NHC) will be spending over $1 million on its Well Repair and Replacement Programme at the Pine and Wildey Housing Estates, which it will be rolling out within a few days. This disclosure has come from acting General Manager of the NHC Clyde Cummins who said the urgent remedial work to the sewage system in the estates would begin on Monday. Cummins continued: “Some NHC personnel and private contractors will be repairing 30 wells during a six-month period, at a cost of $1,065,200. The work will include the cleaning and repairing of septic tanks and disposal wells, the replacement of septic tank covers, and the raising of septic tanks and disposal wells.” The acting General Manager underscored the importance of the programme, saying it was necessary to improve the physical condition of those estates, as well as to ensure the security of residents was not compromised. “The safety of our tenants is paramount. We are committed to executing this programme in a timely fashion, and in a way that would benefit our tenants,” he stated. Cummins urged the residents of the housing estates and the public to cooperate with those involved in the programme. He said: “Where caution notices or other notices are erected or displayed, the tenants and members of the public are advised to adhere to the notices.” He added that the NHC would continue to carry out further work at the Pine, Wildey and other housing estates over the coming months. HOUSING DILEMNA – A 63-year-old Christ Church man is living in fear that any day now National Housing Corporation (NHC) officials can show up and change the locks at the Government unit he has occupied since the mid 1990s. Close to tears, as he sat in the living room of his 12 E Silver Hill Drive, Christ Church unit, Victor Small said he was summoned to a meeting last Friday at NHC where he was informed that he had a week to vacate the premises. Small, who owes NHC BDS$840 in rent as of September 2019 said that during that same meeting he was given the option to be transferred to a one-bedroom unit at Sayes Court. He said the proceedings of that meeting left him in tears. “The lady at NHC told me that this house is too much for one man. She is claiming that in here is too big for me and them want to put me in a bachelor’s quarters for BDS$20 a week. “If you hear how them people carry me long inside that place. A man was in the room with the lady on Friday when she was talking to me, and he went and bring this lock in the room and telling me this is the new lock that he will come and put on. Man I was so disturbed I was crying,” Small recalled. Small said he moved into the unit with his girlfriend Diana Callender in 1995. She died in 2016 but her name was on the rental contract. However he said he has always assisted with paying the rent and believes that the time he shared the home with his common-law wife give him the right to continue living at the unit. The father of two explained that the rent is in arrears because he is unemployed due to illness. He said that he is currently receiving assistance from the Welfare Department because since he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2012 “it is difficult for me to keep work because I always feeling sick”. “If not for welfare I don’t know where I would be today. But you think that I was living here for 20 something years and only owe $840 and that give people the right to come to transfer me and to put me from here? I know people that ain’t live in these houses for so long and owe more than that there and still living in them. This ain’t even a year in rent I owe and I will try my best to pay it,” he said. Small continued: “Since I come down with diabetes sometimes I does feel good, and sometimes I don’t feel good. Sometimes I wake up feeling alright and two twos I tired and weary. Then because I ain’t working I don’t eat well. I get help from my boys or them sister,” he said. He also argued that he could not understand how NHC officials came to the conclusion that he was living alone since his sons overnight at times, especially if he is unwell. (BT)

ATTENTION – The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) has received 22 new helping hands in the fight to ensure the preservation of the integrity of that institution. This afternoon 22 officers graduated the six-week military police course 1/19, during a ceremony held at the Main Guard, The Garrison. In delivering the feature remarks at the ceremony, Chief of Staff at the BDF Colonel Glyne Grannum explained that while the military was a society, it was by no means insulated from the ills which the wider society faces. He explained that while the army enjoys a very high code of conduct, now was not the time to be letting their guard down, as the nature of crime has evolved and therefore as the vanguards of the country’s national security, they must not allow such scourges to infiltrate the system. “I know that the state of nature is an evil with a spirit that unfortunately walks among many organizations and seeks to put its narrow individual interest, financial or otherwise, above the interest of the organization,” Grannum said, warning the new officers to keep their eyes affixed not just on negative trends locally, but across the globe as well. He added:” Drug abuse is very unfortunate, but it is very prevalent in Barbadian society. So, you as military police must understand that the military as a society within a society must be on guard against those risk. There are things which are happening in Barbadian society today that didn’t happen years ago. So, there are risks and threats that we are exposed to and need to deal with, which are evolutionary. They evolved from things we never thought would make their way across the globe into Barbados. The army is not like Star Trek with shields up and closed off from society, we need to ensure that our laws and policing are up to the task.” The veteran soldier noted that apart from maintaining discipline in physical spaces, the new military police officers needed to be mindful of possible breakdown in discipline in cyberspace. He argued that acts of disrespect perpetrated on social media, were just as egregious as if they were committed in the presence of high-ranking officers. “Barbados in 2019 is a modern society, it is a connected society. So, the things that once upon a time that we would read about in the newspaper that happen over and away, predatory behaviour that we read on the internet, are things which we must now be on guard for. Sexual offences, offences in the cyber domain are things which must now be considered. Misconduct in the cyber domain is the same as misconduct in the presence of a superior,” stressed Grannum. He further admonished, “I expect from you the highest of standards. This Barbados Defence Force has been flying high for 41 years and you officers are now the main guard. I expect that you would apply what you have learnt fairly, firmly and without fear. I expect that you would enforce the law regardless of the insults because people will insult you and call you names of the worst kind. You need to remember that this is par for the course”. (BT)

HIGH DRAMA – The murder case against 38-year old Pedro Ellis was adjourned today until Wednesday amidst high drama in the No. 3 Supreme Court after the 12-member jury found him not guilty. In fact, the jury could not even reach a verdict on the lesser charge of manslaughter making way for presiding judge Carlisle Greaves to remand Ellis until Wednesday when bail would be considered and to give the prosecutor time to consult with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The day’s hearing was punctuated by heated exchanges between defence counsel Larry Smith, QC and Justice Greaves. Smith had earlier challenged the judge’s summation and jury directions. The exchanges reached the point where Justice Greaves warned Smith he was not afraid to find him in contempt and send him to prison. “I am not a frightened judge,” he told the senior lawyer. “And I am not a frightened lawyer,” Smith hit back. Following the return of the not guilty verdict on the murder charge, Justice Greaves instructed the jury to retire again and return a unanimous or majority verdict on the lesser count of manslaughter. The jurors were recalled by the judge after more than five hours of back-and-forth. At 4:57 p.m. they reported that the nine women and three men were deadlocked on the manslaughter and were not able to even muster the nine members needed for a majority verdict. At this point Justice Greaves asked them if there was anything in law he could further assist them on, in helping to reach a verdict on the lesser count. The foreman of the jury told him “no sir”. Justice Greaves then discharged them and thanked them for their service. He informed the court he would make a ruling on the way forward on Wednesday. It was then that he asked the attorneys representing Ellis and the prosecution to make any submissions they saw fit. Smith immediately applied for bail on the grounds that his client had been in prison for six years and had now been acquitted of murder. Smith also argued that his peers on the jury also could not agree that he was guilty of manslaughter. Ellis was accused of murdering Antonio Harewood on May 5, 2013 during a stabbing and stoning incident in which testimony before the court suggested he was defending his son after a beating by the deceased. His attorney also contended that in light of the hung jury and two years of indictments by the Crown, it would serve no useful purpose to continue the trial. In fact, Smith submitted that the jury’s position has rendered the Crown’s case flimsy and weak. He said his client is not a flight risk, noting that he had cooperated with the police, was described as a ‘good man’ and was an orderly in prison. Smith told the judge that Ellis should not be punished any further by remanding him to prison, especially since he is still innocent until proven guilty. The Queen’s Counsel appealed to the court to apply the “minimumest” bail conditions and have his client report to a police station several times a week. However, in a surprise move, Crown Counsel Oliver Thomas rose to his feet and urged the court not to retry the accused in light of the length of time he has already spent on remand. “We don’t see any justice in retrying this matter,” Thomas declared to the judge’s surprise. “Have you made this decision on your own without the DPP?” Justice Greaves asked. The judge insisted that the DPP should be consulted and allowed to give consideration to the matter, which Greaves contended is a serious one. When asked to comment on the question of bail, the prosecutor suggested $150,000 bail should be granted to Ellis. But what the judge did next would result in the most dramatic scene of an already eventful day in the Number 3 Supreme Court. He ruled that Ellis should be remanded until Wednesday when he will consider bail and would also give the Crown time to consult with the DPP. Immediately, a loud scream exploded inside the courtroom and continued outside after the family member, who is thought to be Ellis’ mother, stormed out of the court in tears. That crying continued all the way outside of the room and even after the court ended, the female relative was seen holding her bowed head and heard bawling as she sat in the waiting area. “This is hard, this is hard,” she exclaimed as defence attorney Smith sought to console her. Minutes earlier as the judge was about to exit the courtroom to his chambers, he and Smith had yet another verbal exchange. Smith was not impressed by the judge’s decision to ask the prosecutor to consult with the DPP on how to proceed with the trial. “You accusing me of taking sides?” he asked the defense attorney. “No sir,” he replied. “You want to go up [to prison] today?” “No sir,” Smith said. During the trial, Orlando Ellis, the son of the murder accused testified that his father did not have a knife when he ran to him for assistance after being beaten up. However, he said when his father later got into a struggle with the now deceased Harewood in a track, he saw Harewood with a knife in his hand making stabbing motions at his dad. The younger Ellis had testified that he sought his father’s assistance after Harewood had slammed him into the ground. (BT)

ROAD FATALITY ON TWO MILE HILL – A man has died in an accident along Two Mile Hill, St Michael opposite the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Police confirmed that motorcyclist Adrian St Clair Brathwaite who lived in the area died at the scene following the accident around 11:50 last night. Lawmen say, Brathwaite lost control of the motorcycle and fell in the middle of the road. The ambulance personnel responded but there were no signs of life. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations are continuing. (SS)

TEEN FACES STIFF BAN – Barbadian weightlifter Zagora Callender has a new weight on her shoulders. The 17-year-old is facing a possible four-year ban from the sport, for using an anabolic steroid she claims was prescribed by her physician. Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Commission Dr Adrian Lorde revealed the gravity of the situation yesterday, following the International Weightlifting Federation’s report that Callender had violated Article 2.2 of the IWF Anti-Doping Policy. The substance has been identified as Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency since it is said to have a connection with performance enhancement. “According to the World Anti-doping Code, it’s normally four years for a specified substance like [DHEA] because it is an anabolic steroid, but it could be reduced if it is no significant fault of the athlete. He said “It is a developmental programme which provides the police with another strategy to positively influence young people. It will help them to make a positive contribution to their communities, as well as enhance their self esteem and other personal skills.” Local programme manager with Prince’s Trust International, Catherine Taylor, said, “We divided the participants into three groups. The other two groups refurbished a community park at Chapel in St. Philip and at the St. Silas Primary School in St. James. It was a 12-week programme, during which they learned about teamwork through classes and outdoor activities including hikes.” Team leader of the northern group which carried out the work at Farley Hill, Police Constable Roger Knight, said, “We had 12 participants, who started on October 7, where they sold juices and fruit ices in Holetown and Speightstown, which raised $800 that was used to purchase paint and other supplies. The work started on October 15, and the participants power-washed the equipment, removed a vine from the fence surrounding the park, repainted some of the equipment and the benches, and put down concrete tiles in the shape of the Barbados map.” He thanked the Barbados Lumber Company and Home Improvement Hardware for supplying some of the items used. Foreman with the National Conservation Commission, Grantley Dottin, who supervised the young people as they worked, described them as “a wonderful group with lots of talent, creativity and potential”. The tour ended on a high note with a coveted Featured Stage performance and interview on BBC Lancashire. Kaufman explained why he felt the BBC and others were responding favourably to Kirton. “Why David Kirton? I have worked on and off with David Kirton for over eleven years. He has proven time and time again what a great songwriter and performer he is. The dozens of attendees started the night with a mix of hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beverages at the Maxwell, Christ Church hotel, which is a member of the Ocean Hotel Group. Once seated the guests were treated to an explosion of flavours conceptualized by UK award-winning Executive Pastry Chef Simon Jenkins and the Sea Breeze chefs and pastry team – Junior Pastry Chef Rodney Corbin, Chef de Partie Clesita Moore, Group Executive Chef Michael Harrison and Head Chef Ron Maynard. The multicourse five-star dining experience was completed with live entertainment, lavish décor that was done by the Sea Breeze team and enthusiastic servers. The experience started with a delectable serving of ‘rice and peas’ – an oven baked coconut rice pudding, lime and spice, garden pea puree, black-eyed pea, textures of strawberry and candied lime – which was paired with a French wine. This was followed by the delicious ‘cou cou and saltfish’ – a cornmeal and white chocolate popsicle, saltfish and dried okra brittle, tomato sweet basil compote and Barbadian cherry coulis – which was paired with a rum-based drink. The third course consisted of a lemon, angostura and falarnum mousse filled with mango, rum and cilantro jelly, dehydrated citrus sponge, rum punch gel. This was paired with a sparkling Italian white wine. Prior to being served the finalé, the diners had a gorgeous serving of ‘pork and breadfruit’, which consisted of an ‘eggy’ brioche lightly caramelized, apple glaze, pork crispy, maple parfait, vanilla, olive oil dressing, and breadfruit mustard, paired with a white wine. The last of the courses was a bitter chocolate cube, layered with vanilla, ginger cremeux, crunch layer, moist chocolate sponge, a bitter chocolate mousse, sour sop sorbet and roasted cocoa nib foam, which was paired with a red wine. It was difficult to choose a favourite on the night, which also included the sampling of a selection of local artisan cheeses and truffle petit fours infused with flavours of rum, golden apple, sugar apple and coconut and pawi and Bajan season pepper. Affonso-Dass told Barbados TODAY the creative dishes were a reflection of the collection of unique boutique hotels within the Ocean Hotels Group. “I think culinary is a big part of Barbados’ brand and what we are out there selling. We are considered the culinary capital of the Caribbean and certainly for Ocean Hotels and particularly Sea Breeze, we trade on the culinary aspect of the guest experience,” said Affonso-Dass. The 122-room Sea Breeze Beach House hotel offers four different dining experiences and chef pop-up tasting evenings. There is also a rum shop where a variety of meals are served up, the whole idea to expose the guests to the food of destination Barbados. The hotel, which employs up to 150 people during the busy periods, completed a major $22 million renovation last June, placing it in further growth mode. Besides treating the patrons to a wonderful taste of the interesting and flavorsome twists to local dishes, the experience also provided an opportunity and exposure for the Sea Breeze team.
