Iris, Miles, and their mutual "secret"
The Ace Attorney fandom is no stranger to discussions of homoerotic subtext in the game's scriptāpretty much everyone who's spent more than five seconds here will be able to tell you that. Screenshots of lines that imply romantic tension between same-gender characters are all over the place, to the point that many fans are drawn to the series purely by its reputation as "the gay lawyer game." Some scenes are more well-known than others, but one I find brought up fairly regularly is this conversation between Miles and Iris:
This is optional dialogue that can be triggered by presenting incorrect evidence on Iris' Psyche-Lock during the Investigation portion of Bridge to the Turnabout. The argument here is that the "secret" Iris is referring to is the same as her own: that being, a romantic interest in Phoenix Wright. Which is definitely hilarious when you consider that Iris has known Miles for less than a day and she's already reading him for filth (granted, she could have been clued in by the similarly infamous "indispensable friend" line, and she's also exceptionally good at reading people despite Miles thinking otherwise). As a Narumitsu shipper myself I am not immune to enjoying that interpretation; however, I feel like there's a lot of nuance in this scene that isn't often addressed by the fandom at large. Which is unfortunate because watering it down to just Iris calling out Miles for being the gayass he is (to be fair. she's not wrong) does a MASSIVE disservice to both of their characters, and I'll explain why.
My bone to pick with the usual analysis of this scene is mostly centered around the larger conversation to be had regarding the treatment of female characters in fandom spaces. All too often they tend to play second fiddle to the male characters, and a similar principle holds true for ships with their canonical male love interests: mostly ignored in favor of the the more popular M/M ship(s). At best these women are sidelined, at worse they are flattened into wingmen for the boys (as is frequently the case with many AA girls and Narumitsu, Iris included), and at the absolute worst they are demonized for their perceived "competition" with whatever gay ship is most popular and therefore the Only Valid One for the male characters involved (as exemplified by some very "passionate" fans that I generally try to avoid interacting with). Whenever this scene gets brought up, the focus is almost always exclusively on Miles and what the interaction says about his relationship with Phoenix; Iris is only relevant insofar as she's the one initiating Miles' Homosexual Momentā¢āyou could replace her with almost any other character and there'd be a similar level of neglect for their role in the interaction. Only very rarely will you see attention given to what Iris' question about Miles' secret means when she is the one asking it, and what it can tell us about her relationship with Miles/what she thinks of him, and vice versa (absolutely wild how even Miles himself is often flanderized despite being the fandom's golden child). It's all too characteristic of the systemic misogyny that has plagued fandom since its inception, which is deeply frustrating to me as someone who adores Iris as much as I do (if that wasn't obvious by now). So that said, let's dive deeper into what I think the missing link is here: namely, the Iris-Miles dynamic as it pertains to their relation to Phoenix.
Iris and Miles is one of my favorite relationships to explore in the whole seriesābut as I've described above, unfortunately a lot of people get it wrong in my opinion. Discussion about the two is frequently centered around Narumitsu Love Dramaāwhich is a conversation worth having, don't get me wrongābut the elements at play there aren't always represented the way I envision them, which again, is frustrating. Take the idea of potential jealousy, for instance: it's pretty standard love triangle fare that can be (and often is) quickly turned into demonization when it's used in a shipping context, character assassination be damned (re: Narumitsu fanfic authors that project their personal dislike of Feenris onto Miles via his jealousy of Iris and/or how they tend to portray Iris unfavorably). However, it's not inherently a bad thing to explore: personally, I do believe that there is mutual jealousy between the two of them. Miles might not have the full context of Iris' history when this conversation takes place, but he's emotionally intelligent enough to pick up on what Iris means to Phoenix, and vice versa. And him being a jealous hoe about it isn't out of the question when you consider that he's a bit of a loner by nature and doesn't have many close friends or outlets for socialization outside of his job. The crucial element that's sometimes missed, though, is that Miles not only lacks the self-awareness to realize he's a jealous hoe...he's also a self-sabotaging jealous hoe.
And the same can be said for Iris, who is similarly introverted and doesn't often leave her home at Hazakura Temple.
The whole reason Miles is peering into Iris' heart in the first place can be found in this exchange, after he breaks her Psyche-Lock:
Miles uses the Magatama in order to gain the answers he needs to bring the truth to light and get Iris acquitted, and he does so for the express purpose of reuniting her with Phoenix so they can find closureāin fact, he reiterates this to her multiple times. He obviously recognizes how Phoenix is suffering from what happened between them (I'd argue he sympathizes with Iris' plight as well) and has resolved to do what he can to help him heal, but there's no reason for him to be so insistent that she rectify things with Phoenix when it does nothing but harm his own chances with him. Unless, of course...that's the whole point.
To convince Iris to reveal her secret so he doesn't have to face his own, because he thinks himself undeserving.
And Iris, noticing this because she empathizes with that feeling of unworthiness, calls him out on it in an almost uncharacteristically forward manner when she asks him what he's hiding.
Takes one to know one, indeed.
Iris highly respects Miles for taking on her defense despite the risk to his job as a prosecutor. She's willing to trust him after hearing he's a friend of Phoenix, hearing him out and letting him reason with her. She still keeps her cards close to her chest in some regards, but she's more honest with him than she's been with anyone else in her life apart from her sister. She sees his commitment to the truth and how it starkly contrasts with how she's lived her life to this point, and thinks that this is the type of partner Phoenix deservesānot someone like her, who only knows how to survive using lies and deception. She sees so much strength in him but still recognizes the insecurity lurking beneath his tenacity, which is why when he falters in his logic, she takes a leap of faith and gives him one last chance to examine his reasons for pushing the burden of his unspoken affections onto her, as if to say: "Look in the mirror. Is this really for me? Or is it for you? Do you really seek the truth for its own sake, or do you merely hope to find one truth so you might run from another?"
Her question to Miles is a gambleāa coin flip of self-sacrifice. If she loses and he presses on, she has to face the secret within her heart she's been suppressing for five years. But if she wins and he gives in to the truth in his, she has to live the rest of her life watching it unfold and knowing she threw away her chance to finally stop living in fear of her own love.
Either way, there's no escaping heartache for her anymore.
Miles and Iris both want what's best for Phoenix and prioritize their vision of his feelings over their own. However, they are also both deeply emotionally repressed people who find difficulty in being direct with their feelings, and are predisposed to self-sabotage due to childhood trauma. These tendencies may manifest in different ways for both of them, but the fact remains that such people would likely not compete for a person's affection in the traditional sense, which is exactly what we see with how Iris and Miles deflect their feelings for Phoenix. These selfless, lovestruck idiots toss that man around like a game of hot-potato because their mutual self-hatred for the ways they've harmed him has rendered them terrified of the reality of what he means to them, and desperate to find a way out of admitting to it. It's the most compelling explanation I can think of for why the usually unassuming Iris makes such a bold judgment about what Miles might be keeping locked away, and why Miles goes to such lengths to make sure she talks to Phoenix and tells him the truthāhis agreement to defend her was conditional on that exact promise. They go through this whole song-and-dance of playing wingman to ignore their own feelings while still trying to bring Phoenix the happiness they think he deservesāand then they wonder why seeing Phoenix give the other one attention burns them up inside.
Because theyāre dumb. And I love them.
TL;DR the Iris Psyche-Lock scene in BttT is so much more than just "haha Miles gay" and I wish people talked about it more. Also Iris and Miles are way more similar than they appear at first glance and if I think about it for too long it makes me physically ill thank you for coming to my TED talk

āArknights/Limbus Company/etc is obviously very political, why are these incels playing it?ā Hereās a longer answer if youāre interested.
If you havenāt been watching gacha communities for the past decade this might be confusing to you, but these guys see the games as just apolitical stories with a majority or all-female cast being there to titillate the male viewer. They are for his consumption. Itās why in both eastern and western āgacha gameā communities you can see them talking about how these games are better for having ābeautifulā anime women versus the hideous hags of western media. Iāve seen so many people asking āhow are incels playing a game with so many strong female characters?ā They see them not as āstrong femaleā characters but rather āeyecandy made for meā. tbh when it comes down to it I wouldnāt call any of the designs in these games absolutely groundbreaking for the anime genre theyāre aiming for. Arknights even follows the standard āfully animal faced-guyā and the female equivalent āsmall featured anime animal girl with some furā. This doesnāt mean the designs are bad or youāre foolish for enjoying them of course, there are a lot of fun ones. Anyway, you can see the same sentiment in the majority of anime communities as well. Like do you think that stereotype of an anime nerd who āloves 2D women but hates 3D womenā means heās a feminist because the 2D girl is still female?
To be frank, after some of the actions taken by these companies (ex. the firing of women for posting anything vaguely feminist) can you honestly say an āapolitical game with anime babesā is not the way the games are often enjoyed? The company Yostar who publishes Arknights in Korea literally wrote a statement saying the game is apolitical and calling feminism a dividing force. If the publisher can say something so flippantly like this just to appease their incel fanbase, how can the game be making any meaningful, hardline progressive political statements? I am of course not saying this renders any positive message you get from these games moot nor am I saying itās impossible for the writers to be passionate about their work, Iām just relaying the thoughts of the incels/āgacha gamersā playing them because there seems to be confusion. What Iām writing here doesnāt mean the worst interpretation of these games are their defining interpretations. Iām trying to explain how the games that many people see as being antithetical to incel beliefs can have these same men as high-spending fans.
Gacha games are unique in the world of consumer media in their extremely close and constant relationship with the consumer. You have to not only love each characterās design (and sometimes story) but also be willing to drop serious gambling money to ābuyā them every single month. Itās like merchandizing on steroids. I think the term āwhaleā has been watered down since younger kids have started playing, but these people spend thousands per patch. Over the years Iāve heard about multiple games like this being sustained by just a couple of high spenders. In 2018 there was even a western news article about a man who had spent $70k+ on FGO. The publisher canāt rock the boat too much to displease the consumer too many times without risking EoS. Every character design and story of a gacha game is affected by this FIRST while any artistic intent comes second.
A Korean woman who had lost her job due to similar āfeminist huntingā tactics wrote an article describing the way these incel men think. I posted it here and part of it summarized: the men that play these games see themselves as buying and āowningā the female characters in gacha games, who are often dressed and presented to them in a highly sexualized manner and will obey their commands. In the same way they āownā these 2D women, they also want to own the thoughts of the real live female illustrators who work on the games. Therefore, if these women have expressed ideas that the male gamers find upsetting, they will be angry she doesnāt conform to what they want like the servile 2D girl and do everything to get her fired (this is where she mentions Limbus Company as the most recent example of this happening).
You can argue for some of these games, maybe the girls arenāt dressed super provocatively and give (you) shit instead of being a simpering doll, but in the end itās not like they can physically walk away or stop speaking to you. For the āwaifuā hunter guy itās just a different type of anime girl to collect.
The stories in these games are generally not what gets targeted as much by incels. In gacha āgamerā communities, especially the Korean incel ones, their main concerns are: how revealing are the summer swimsuits? How many women work for the company designing characters? and related, Are the male characters designed for women or for men and do they ālook gayā? If you search through this blog, you can see them directly speaking about these things in regards to their hatred of Genshin Impact and Star Rail. All of these have also been encapsulated in the original Limbus Company incel attack: they hated that the summer female character looked more āclothedā (wearing a skintight suit instead of a bikini) than the male summer character. They thought the collar necklace and open shirt on the male summer character meant he was āa slaveā for the female viewers, so obviously it was designed by a woman. When they learned a man designed and illustrated those characters, they searched to find a female illustrator who worked in the game and went after her instead. These guys WERE FANS that played the game beforehand and didnāt think anything in the story was upsetting enough to attack the company about. They were familiar enough with the works of Project Moon to name their little group after an antagonizing force in one of PMās previous (non-gacha) videogames. And Project Moon saw them as such a significant part of their gacha fanbase that they wrote an immediate apology and fired the artist. How do these actions in reality inform their fiction and the interpretation of it? Getting this out of the way, they were NOT in any danger, the āfansā were not clamoring to get in their offices or camping outside, they were let in and calmly had a meeting with some employees at the office. You can still find photos of them goofing around, the ridiculous write up they brought with them and a transcript of the conversation. This was not a āguy shows up at Mihoyoās offices with a knifeā situation. In the end it was a financial and moral loss for the studio with many new and longtime fans completely dropping the games and Limbus Company taking one of the biggest financial and D/MAU drops for a gacha Iāve ever seen. You can read more regarding the ramifications of this here, this post is already pretty long for this website anyway.
Again Iām not writing this to shame anyone who plays these games, loves their characters or enjoys their stories. I donāt really care either way, and I obviously find the genre interesting or else I wouldnāt have been monitoring it and the fans for a decade. I just want to shine a light on the thoughts of the more āincelā gamers that play some of these games since I have seen a lot of genuine confusion as to why they would play them. In the future my aim is to write a more in-depth post about these issues, their history and the way antifeminists think.

š©µ surprisingly vocal? He isnāt over the top, but heās not silent either. Heās more of a grunter than anything. There arenāt a lot of moan, mainly when heās close to cumming. Also a heavy breather, not to the point that heās full on panting like a dog but more that he takes a moment if heās really REALLY getting into it.
š©µ If you actually have sex with poseidon there are two categories: 1 his wife/ partner and 2 everything else. He can be passionate, but only if he wants to. If youāre his partner it would be more about the moment and emotions and feelings ect. If he had any that is. If youāre everything else heās just there: he would be like āguess we fucking igā¦ā he doesnāt seem exited despite his dick being online. If itās not up to his standard he might dip half way. Yes he has no problem leaving you mid sex. Not his problem anymore. But he would be more attentive if heās your partner.
š©µ is both into female x male and male xm. Itāe my own mythology based hc. But i think itās common knowledge that Poseidon is bisexual. Does this mean that he takes a cock up his butt? Not always. Does this mean heās into pegging? Hell yes. When it comes to male on male heās very much into power play. Mainly because he is well, the gods of the sea. And yes he takes a rather dominant role. With everyone unless youāre someone he cares for. He might also be into threesomes: doesnāt matter if the other person is male or female. Might participate in sword fighting if you know what i mean
š©µ well groomed. Heās blonde so most of the time you donāt really see the hair on his body anyways. He naturally isnāt very hairy but he usually keeps it clean shaved down there. If for example he really didnāt have much time, or heās under much pressure he might forget to clean shave and youāll see hints of blonde hair. Itās never bushy though and he makes it a point if he noticed that heās neglecting himself to shave it all off. Prefers waxing with armpits, but shaves down there since itās more sensitive
š©µ weāre going to take a look in his pants: rather pale cock. Kinda pinkish near the tip. Slightly curved upward. Veiny but not too veiny, maybe a big vein going from the shaft to the middle and some smaller veins along side it. Tip color #F2B8C6. Itās cut too btw. Around 15 cmās and heās proud of it. Well he doesnāt pre-cum a lot but when he does itās usually on the leaking side
š©µ isnāt necessary vanilla. It truly depends on who you are to him. If youāre a rather intimate partner it will take some time and a level of trusts. Especially things that will make him seem less dominant or masculine. He prefers to be on the receiving end of the relationship than the giving. For example pegging or just over all taking a more sub like position already makes Poseidon a little wary, but he trust you and thinks its nice to be taken care of from time to time so he does actually engage in it. Just donāt talk about it to others, partially because he doesnāt want people to view him as a sub but mostly because he doesnāt want anyone to be involved with what he does in the sheets or his personal life.
š©µ If Poseidon cums itās a rather decent amount. It had no special features, not necessarily on the creamy side not the more liquid side. Perfectly balanced as all gods should be (his words not mine). Poseidon doesnāt necessarily have a preference where he cums (S/O). It usually depends on his partner. If itās a male partner he prefers to have them cum instead as a sign that he can make them feel that way, he himself wouldnāt actually care much about his own release. But if his partner was female and not his SO he would cum outside (to prevent babies)
š©µ Poseidon is more of a traditional sex person. Oral is fine but he doesnāt see it as sex itself, more just an act of pleasure. Sex for him can either be out of lust and interest, with someone he doesnāt know and is easy to get or someone who he thinks seems interesting to pursue but after they have sex itās nothing more. Or it is to he intimate with someone he feels a deep connection to. Having sex with him as an intimate partner will take a little while though. With an intimate person he has more traditional sex than oral, he doesnāt mind it all though if you want it but itās to kind of let you know that he cares. With the randomās heād get a blowjob or something. No heās not performing oral on you. Youāre doing it on him. Period.
š©µ Something about Poseidon that he wouldnāt admit is that he likes erotic shows. No itās not watching two people going at it or attending orgies. He likes dancers and music, think more about belly dancers or over all something erotic with hints of dance. He likes lap dances too. He will not touch you unless he absolutely takes an interest in you (which doesnāt happen often at all) he prefers to actually see a show and watch than fuck most of the time.
š©µ he doesnāt believe in toys. At least not when heās on action. He doesnāt really mind not care for it if you use them to masturbate, thatās up to you. But he does NOT want them when heās having sex with you. Not only does he see it as sign of disrespect, he will stop no matter what you say or do. He thinks that involving toys with the act means that you donāt think heās enough to satisfy you. Heāll have a scowl on his face and narrows his eyes before pulling away from you and walking away. Poseidon isnāt a PDA person anyway so heāll be fine if he doesnāt have sex even though heās hard.
š©µ Poseidon doesnāt masturbate often. Itās truly once in a red moon that he does it. Most assume he doesnāt do it all. He has a low sex drive and over all doesnāt see sex as some hobby unlike Zeus. If he does for some reason feel horny and actually doesnāt choose the option to pursue a one night stand or he has a partner and theyāre not available, then yes he might masturbate. Itās nothing out of the ordinary, just him pleasuring himself with his hand. He would probably be in bed or his office, both are with the door locked. He doesnāt want anyone to see nor interrupt his time. If you knock expect him to not respond.
š©µ One of Poseidonās turn onās is Jewelry. Long, small, thick, thin, gold, silver, pearls, coper, stones, beads, diamonds, gems, ect. He likes all of them, heās not materialistic but he appreciates a nice set of jewelry on his partner. He also doesnāt really mind what type of jewelry it is: bracelets, body chains, piercings, necklaces, waistbands, headpieces, ankle bracelets, earrings, rings, toe rings. As long as you look sexy and pretty. Yes both men and women. Heās a simple man in that regard. Make up is also fine. Seeing you on his bed wrapped in the silky sheets, your body glistening in the under the dim light. Some of the jewelry hugging you tightly yet some hing loose onto your body. It drives him crazy, but he wonāt admit it though.
That was allš„¶š„

Isekai/Isekai Adjacent Recommendations Post - Female Protagonist Version
So since a few people are sharing their own isekai recommendations, I figured I'd make a post of my own. Most of these are Korean manhwa, most of them lean more towards romance fantasy than action, and all of them have female protagonists.
The reason for this is that, after noping out of Mushoku Tensei like half an episode in, I now refuse to read/watch any isekai with a male protagonist unless it is recommended to me by like three people that I actually trust.
Anyway, recommendations!
All Time Favourite: Ascendance of a Bookworm
Summary: after dying in an earthquake, a book-loving young woman finds herself reborn in the body of Myne, a sickly peasant girl in a world where books are luxury items reserved mostly for the nobility. Horrified by her circumstances, she resolves to make her own books... and everything snowballs from there.
Why I like it: The worldbuilding in this story is absolutely fantastic. The protagonist is an extremely fun character, and plays really well off the supporting cast. The series is called "Ascendance" of a Bookworm because, in the process of trying to bring books to the masses, Myne brings massive changes to both her own life and the world around her.
Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's heartbreakingly sad. Sometimes you get lovingly detailed descriptions of printing presses, medieval economics, and soup.
A lot of these recommendations are romance-focused, but Ascendance of a Bookworm contains very little romance (arguably none for the protagonist, depending on how you interpret Myne's relationship with a certain character). Because of that, this is the one I would most recommend to people who are not interested in romance.
There is a manga for this one (and an anime), but it isn't finished. The light novel, however, is finished and has a complete official translation. Unlike a lot of light novels, the prose is actually pretty good, too! I would highly recommend the light novel if you're looking to get into this series.
Possible Second Favourite: Concubine Walkthrough
Summary: High school student Yona gets quite literally sucked into the world of the VR game Concubine Walkthrough. Now stuck in the body of the villainess, she has to beat the game and escape this virtual world in time to take her college entrance exams.
Why I like it: The premise seems fairly cliche at first, but unlike a lot of romance fantasy isekai that stay strictly within the realm of fantasy, Concubine Walkthrough is actually science fiction. It's also a tale of palace intrigue, the cruelty of the modern (well, near-future) world, and - yes - it is a love story.
It's hard to fully explain why Concubine Walkthrough is so good without spoiling it, so I won't say any more than that. Just that this is a journey worth undertaking.
Other Recommendations, in no particular order except maybe alphabetical
How to Win my Husband Over:
The protagonist wakes up in the body of Rudbeckia de Borgia, a novel villainess destined to die at the hands of her husband, Iske van Omerta. In order to survive, she begins a campaign to suck up to those around her and convince them that she is not a threat.
Rudbeckia ("Ruby") is a complex and troubled protagonist - a heart-rendingly realistic portrait of a woman who has never felt truly safe in her life. This story comes with massive content warnings for family violence, eating disorders, and self-harm/suicide. Some people find Ruby to be a really frustrating character, since her inability to trust others causes a lot of conflict in the story. I personally really like her, because her inability to trust others causes a lot of conflict in the story.
I'll Save this Damned Family:
The protagonist wakes up in the body of Tara Elias, who is - you guessed it, a minor villainess whose entire family is doomed to face execution. In order to save her entire household, despite the fact that most of them suck as human beings, Tara must use her wits to enter the arena of fantasy politics, throwing her support behind the illegitimate Prince Kyle. (Yes, for some reason most of the people in this one have normal-ass modern names).
The political intrigue in this one is incredibly complex. Tara is incredibly clever, but she doesn't always succeed - she is often outmanouevred, which adds a real sense of tension and urgency.
There's kind of a sideplot early on about Tara losing weight, which some people might find inherently distasteful. However, she goes about it in a normal and realistic way, and the story makes it clear that her worth as a human being isn't tied to her weight, which is actually kind of a big deal for a Korean manhwa.
Mother's Contract Marriage:
Lyrica is a normal eight-year old girl. No, really, she's completely normal - she has no memories of any past life, nor has she gone back in time after facing any sort of grisly fate.
Her mother, on the other hand, suddenly changes one day. Formerly a neglectful drunk living in the slums, she finesses her way into the imperial ball and secures a contract marriage to the Emperor, catapulting Lyrica into the glamorous life of a princess overnight.
Of course, as the audience, we figure out pretty quickly that Lyrica's mother has gone back in time, and is using her knowledge of the future to save both of them from a terrible fate. The story isn't actually about that, though - it's about Lyrica charming everyone around her, finding out about her own magical powers, and unknowingly fighting back against the darker side of the nobility.
The art style is absolutely gorgeous, and really sells the fact that this entire story is being filtered through the perspective of an actual child.
Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom:
Children's fashion designer Lily Lee wakes up in the body of Abigail, the evil stepmother from Snow White. She resolves to shower her eleven-year-old stepdaughter, Princess Blanche, with affection, and to browbeat her distant and cold-hearted husband into doing the same.
This one is extremely sweet and heartwarming, while also dealing with some seriously heavy topics including body image and pretty much every kind of child abuse. Both Abigail and her husband, King Sabrian, are fundamentally good people dealing with some extremely difficult circumstances. Blanche is a sweet kid who has been forced to become mature beyond her years, and who wants nothing more than a loving family.
The Crimson Lady:
Karen Heyer woke up as the heroine of a romance novel. Since then, she has lived through the same year one hundred times. No matter what she does, she is destined to die a painful death at the end of each year - no sooner, and no later.
Having been hollowed out into a broken husk of a person, she resolves to become a serial killer, hoping that death - rather than love - might bring an end to the cycle.
This one seems to be getting close to its conclusion, and every chapter is a massive goddamn cliffhanger. It's one of those stories where every time a mystery is solved, it just brings up more questions, and I WANT TO KNOW UGH.
The Fantasie of a Stepmother:
Shuri was brought into the Neuschwanstein family as a child herself, raised by the ailing Marquess for the sole purpose of protecting his four children after his death. Despite being despised by her four step-children, Shuri nevertheless managed to shield them from harm, and looks forward to finally having a chance to live her own life after the marriage of her eldest step-child.
Instead, however, Shuri wakes up seven years in the past, right after the death of her husband. She must now relive her entire experience of raising the Neuschwanstein children - but is this an opportunity to repair her bond with them?
(Note: yes, Shuri was a child when she was married to Marquess Neuschwanstein. That marriage was not, uh, consummated. I would not call her husband a good man, for a number of reasons, but CSA isn't an element of this story. Important to note because that could obviously be a deal-breaker for a lot of people.)
This is one of the most popular romance fantasy manhwa around, and with good reason. The art is beautiful, the story is intricate, and the characters are vibrant and likeable. Also, the original web novel was written by the same author as How to Win my Husband Over.
The Glamorous Life of a Fake Mistress:
This one isn't super popular from what I can tell, but I'm recommending it because it's actually one of my favourites.
Sally, a common dancer, was taken in as the mistress of Duke Casis Estaban, who desperately wants to divorce his wife, Elysee. Although Sally falls in love with Casis, he remains cold and professional towards her, treating her as a mistress in name only. Elysee torments Sally behind the Duke's back, eventually torturing her and killing her.
After finding herself sent back in time, Sally initially attempts to avoid getting involved with Duke Esteban. However, after realising that this would simply transfer her fate to another person, she makes a deal with Casis - she will be his fake mistress and help him secure his divorce. With the knowledge she gained in her first life, both of the future and of noble etiquette, Sally sets out to achieve her goal.
Along the way, she gives a lot of very modern advice to noblewomen about sex, relationships, and self-esteem. I honestly just like this one because it's a breath of fresh air - Sally is a genuinely kind person, and I think it's easier to root for her in a way because she is a real underdog, as a commoner in a world of nobles and a mistress in a world of "respectable" women. Also, we love a girls' girl.
Villains are Destined to Die:
Probably the most popular isekai romance fantasy out there at the moment. The protagonist wakes up in the body of Penelope Eckhart, who is both the villainess of an otome game and the protagonist of that game's hard mode. The protagonist never actually managed to beat the game, having instead witnessed Penelope's constant deaths at every wrong turn.
Terrified of her fate, and deeply resentful of everyone within the game world, Penelope resolves to survive and beat the game.
In a pattern you may have identified, I like this one because of its protagonist. Penelope is cold, paranoid, and views the people around her as game NPCs. She tries to manipulate others without developing any attachments to them, focusing solely on her own survival. She isn't an inherently cruel person, but caring for others is a luxury she cannot afford.

So I was reading N.T. Wrightās paper on the biblical basis for womenās service in the church (and it was pretty great imo) and he frequently refers to the idea that distinctions between man and woman no longer exist post-salvation (which for most Christian traditions means post-baptism) and condemns it as gnostic.
Note: Iāll be defining gnostic pretty loosely. Just focus on the āneglect for material physical reality in favor of a more immaterial spiritual thingā aspect.
What he is referring to is similar but not exactly like the egalitarian anthropology called āeschatological feminismā. In this view the original human, Adam, is an androgynous hermaphrodite until the fall, after which gender was created. According to this viewās interpretation of Galatians 3:28, baptism (the introduction into new creation) returns humans to that pre-fallen state of androgyny.Ā
There is more: Sexuality, the main division between genders, is said to be the root of female subordination. Relationships that are typically rooted in sexuality (marriage and motherhood) place women in roles that are subordinate in accordance with society's patriarchal norms. The path to equality is believed to be found when women transcend these roles ātraditionally through celibacy (as seen in the life of Paul). Transcending worldly norms, which the Bible instructs Christians to do, brings men and women to the state of androgyny that eliminates gender subordination; thus, Christianity is intended to manifest gender equality. Transcendence is the core of eschatological feminism; women reach equality with men by separating from the world, rather than changing it.Ā
N.T. Wright doesnāt really do this perspective justice imo. Part of the reason for that is that this perspective is focused on Genesis 2 whereas Wright is focused more so on Genesis 1: āmale and female he created them.āĀ
Eschatological feminism is actually really popular on progressive Christian tumblr (except in tetrahedra to trans theology instead of feminist theology), albeit without all of the elaborate aspects I mentioned. Actually, progressive christblr tends to be closer to Wrightās simplification of this perspective: in Genesis 1 we were made male and female, but once in Christ (which for most Christians means once baptized) there is no male nor female.Ā
That said, I have to agree with Tom: that is gnostic. It treats the original created state as something to be done away with and is, surprisingly, actually a lot closer to evangelical or fundamentalist perspectives on creation (theological horseshoe theory???). It shows a certain disdain or contempt for og creation and New Creation as a denial of old creation instead of a reaffirmation of it. Wright, who like Paul is a theologian of new creation, is spot on with this critique.Ā
Side note: Gnosticism will always be a temptation where there is a neglect for the physical and an emphasis on the spiritual. Since eschatological feminism is inspired by asceticism and mysticism, it makes sense that it would have gnostic tendencies. And the same can be said for evangelicalism. Tho it is not ascetic or mystical, it does see material reality is both distinct from and lower than nonmaterial reality.Ā
That said. I donāt think that eschatological feminism or trans theology has to be intrinsically gnostic.Ā
Asceticism and mysticismĀ
Adam being originally androgynousĀ
Female subordination being the result of the fall
Baptism as New Humanity (in which subordination and oppression can no longer be tolerated)
Elevation of the status of single people
Gender equalityĀ
Separation from human made power structuresĀ
All of these things are really good things and are key aspects of eschatological feminism. None of them are heretical. However
The harsh view of sex, marriage, and motherhood
The treatment of creation as something to be done away with
The idea of sex and/or gender as fundamentally bad
View of Christianity as escapist
All of those are unbiblical. But, I think both eschatological feminism and trans theology can get on well without them.Ā

Fire Emblem Heroes and the Great Male-Presenting Nipple Hunt
Last year I put out a post criticizing the paltry state of male fanservice in Fire Emblem Heroes by contrasting it against technically-SFW artwork in a variety of explicit gay dating sims. Very little has changed since then, bar one notable exception -
EikĆ¾yrnir, a.k.a. Deer Daddy, just won Choose Your Legends. Not only that, but he got more votes than any other character in the event. I don't go there, but I hear that this has apparently made some people over on Reddit angry in a comically hypocritical way, because at least unlike Baldr also winning this year or Gullveig doing so back in 2023 Eik already exists as a character in FEH with two playable versions and the mild suggestion of a personality. Reddit, presumably, is angry because he has the audacity to be horny while male:
Now I could find a dozen or more sexier interpretations of a deer/elk/moose man out there, because I occasionally move in furry-adjacent online kink circles, but as far as FEH is concerned this guy is water in a desert - and those of us who wish this game would even pretend to be more equal opportunity with its fanservice have been parched.
That said...the man's got no nipples.
Nipples on their own are hardly the be-all, end-all of male fanservice, as I demonstrated in that previous post. However, I find that they're a useful signifier for the way that Fire Emblem and indeed most mainstream animated media prefer to handle the subject of partial male nudity. There's no shortage of muscular, bare-chested men in this game, but as is so often the case those characters are designed not to be eroticized in the same way that virtually every female character is in one way or another, but rather to be aspirational power fantasies for straight men.
Nipples disrupt that fantasy, both visually and psychologically. They call to mind how women's nipples are usually considered obscene and thus censored, like what happened with mythic Loki last year on YouTube. More concerningly for the heteronormative male gaze, nipples are erogenous zones for some men and so connote both vulnerability as well as the knowledge that male characters can be sex objects to certain audiences. The long and short of it is that male nipples can make straight men uncomfortable and are thus often censored by way of excluding them from art where they should logically appear, anatomical accuracy be damned.
In the wake of Deer Daddy's win I set out to survey men's nipples of FEH, because I'm aware that there are at least a few of them. This took several hours of scrolling through hundreds of pieces of Heroes art, including attack and damaged poses since FEH is infamous for giving female characters strategically-placed ripped clothing in the latter. I even looked at all the available resplendent art, though that proved to be a waste of time as there's not a nipple to be found in any of those updated designs. Note that a subjective element to this was unavoidable; as straightforward as this all might sound, you'd be surprised how often it can hard to distinguish what might be a visible nipple from shading or muscle contour. By the end of scanning artwork of over 500 different units I was almost beginning to imagine nipples where none existed!
Needless to say, there will be a lot of images in this post, but as they're all guys from FEH they can only get so racy. Prepared to be disappointed.
Generally speaking, bare-chested men in FEH come in two flavors: characters who were shirtless in their original artwork, and summer alts. Those swimsuit banners are filled to the brim with conspicuously nipple-free men, though Magvel may take the cake solely on account of how many summer alts FE8 has gotten over the years.
Of that set the faint discoloration on Joshua's right pec just above the strap might be a nipple, but that's as good as it gets.
FĆ³dlan fares marginally better here. There's the suggestion of nipples in Dedue's art as well as in Lorenz's attack pose (ignore his infamous Ken doll crotch) and Sylvain's damaged art. Neither of the house leaders have anything going on, though.
Awakening also has a few summer alts with what might be nipples.
The fact that neither Ike nor any of the male laguz have swimsuit alts after eight years and sixteen summer banners might as well be Exhibit A for how IS doesn't understand how to make use of the male fanservice fodder it's got. Ike's not likely to get one this year either, not when he just got a desert alt...but with that said there may be a bit of nipple on that alt's damaged art, just under the rip.
While we're talking possible ripped nip slips try saying that three times fast, there's a handful of others that at least approach that territory, like brave Dimitri, Jeralt, and also Hubert for some reason. Osian wins this category though, with that slightly darkened and prominent bump on his right pec that I'm going to liberally accept as a nipple.
Then there are characters who ordinarily go about bare-chested, although they're just as likely to be lacking in nipples which makes me sad. These could have been so much hornier!
Although to the artists' credits, some characters are missing nipples in their base versions only to (maybe?) gain them in alts, like Hawkeye and Linus.
Soeda Ippei is often cited as the one FEH artist that consistently delivers on male fanservice, and while he has come through with some of the best the game has to offer as we'll see at the end he's also guilty of the occasional nipple-less design. Notable among these is autumn Dorcas, who fails my criteria here but who is otherwise a much better take on a mildly horny bull guy than Askr who's just a disappointment no matter how you look at him.
Seriously, show the design on the right to anyone even passingly familiar with the work of gay furries/monsterfuckers to give them a good laugh. Why is the bull a borderline twunk?!
But anyway, since I'm reaching the image limit on this post it's time for me to hand out the top prizes for FEH's Most Prominent Male Nipples! As well as an honorable mention...
I'm not exaggerating when I say that this may be the single raciest piece of art of a male character in FEH. Hot springs Ryoma gets his towel blown off in his damaged pose, leaving him in nothing but an open loincloth. His chest might be the usual flat slab of muscle, but that's closer to flashing some dick than I'd ever have expected of this game.
But onto the nipple-based winners:
Starting with one by Ippei, Darros has at least one visibly-defined areola in all of his poses.
Mustafa has both nipples clearly visible in his attack and damaged art. I seriously have never thought twice about this guy before now and I've never seen this brought up, so his art stunned me when I saw it. Even more amazingly, this isn't an Ippei piece but rather was done by Toshiyuki Kusakihara, the art director of Awakening.
Still, the grand prize has to go to Ippei.
Fargus doesn't merely have nipples; he has chest hair, which I'm pretty sure makes him the only character in all of FEH with any visible hair below the neck (not counting tails on any of the furry shapeshifters, before someone brings those up). He also lacks the standard muscle definition and instead has what looks to be an actual gut. How did IS ever approve this?
Well...it probably helps that Fargus is an NPC from a pre-Awakening game who got released via a Grand Hero Battle so no one's spending orbs on him anyway.
That's the unfortunate reality of all these top picks. They're all minor characters, with two of them not even playable in their own games, and as far as I'm aware none of them are exactly premium units in FEH. They're low-value characters, and likely not ones most players are likely to take note of unlike the lords and similarly popular units, so they get to be horny in a way that's unconventional for this game.
I don't seriously expect Eik's CYL win to change much of anything when it comes to male fanservice; as I suggested at the top, his design relative to what it could have been is actually quite safe for any but the most insecure of straight men. I just hope that 3/4ths of the winners coming from FEH doesn't send IS the message that they can continue cranking out low-effort fanservice OCs instead of working on the next mainline game. Those may now only exist to subsidize the roster of the mobile gacha...but that would still be highly disappointing.

Viserys Targaryen Rant Part 2
Rhaenyra, the Kingās Heir
After episode eight of House of the Dragon aired, there were a lot of people cheering on Viserys for his support of Rhaenyraās claim.
I will admit, the scene was heartwarming to me at first,- a frail old man on the brink of death, getting up solely to defend his daughter in front of a court that may have had grievances with her being a female-heir. That kind of fatherly support, means a lot in a misogynistic society like Westeros. But, what does that moment of support truly mean for a man that had not performed his duties as a father?
Let us refer back to episode one. This scene in particular:
Aemma expresses to Viserys that she does not wish to have another pregnancy after the birth of the child sheās pregnant with.
According to Fire and Blood, Viserys and Aemma married when she was eleven years old. Their marriage was not consummated until two years later, when Aemma had flowered. Aemma in both Fire and Blood and House of the Dragon would go on to suffer multiple miscarriages, that some of Maesters suspected were due to her being bed too young.
Refocusing on the scene above, Aemma tells Viserys that Rhaenyra suspects that the unborn child might be a girl. Viserys is insistent that it is a boy.
In episode one, Rhaenyra was fifteen years old. If she were male, Viserys would have started preparing her as his heir,- taking her to council meetings, send her as a messenger, etc. But he doesnāt, because he wanted a male heir. He spent almost two decades brutalizing his wife and ultimately killing her for a son. He spent almost two decades neglecting his daughter and putting her aside because he wanted a son.
Aegon, Second of his Name
In the third episode of House of the Dragon, we meet Aegon, the first child between Alicent and Viserys.
For a majority of the episode, Aegon is being celebrated as itās his name day, and heās the kingās first born son. The King now having son would usually signal a change in succession, since for most of Westeros, sons inherit over daughters. However, by the end of the episode, Viserysā position does not change: Rhaenyra is his rightful heir.
So what happens to Aegon, the long-awaited son?
Letās look at some word from the screenwriter, Ryan Condal:
"Aegon is a great example of neglect and indulgence," Condal says. "This is the medieval version of the millionaire's prodigal son. His mother was 15, and his father never paid any attention to him. His father deeply, deeply loved Aemma and Rhaenyra and was [only] having [more] kids to carry on the line. He really didn't want Aegon ā he wanted Baelon, the son that killed his first wife."
When we first meet Aegon he was being celebrated. After hoping for a boy for years, Viserys finally got a male heir.
We donāt get any scenes of his early childhood but we see Aegon again when heās a teenager. Heās disinterested in most things, heās blunt, he teases, he masturbates by the window sill, but most of all, heās disinterested and lackadaisical.
After another time skip, we see Aegon again. Heās still disinterested in most things, he drinks, heās a rapist, and is overall not really a good person.
Within the fandom, most of the blame for the way Aegon has turned out has been directed to Alicent.
Now, Alicent being a child-bride does not excuse all of her actions, but it does explain a lot of them.
In scene where Alicent speaks with Dyana, I interpreted her reaction as one filled with shame, frustration and disappointment. All of the traits I used to describe Aegon, can be applied to Viserys. Aegon is his fatherās mirror and Alicent is the only one who is trying to break it. Immediately after meeting with Dyana, she confronts Aegon, and disowns him(well, not really). Were her methods rash? Yes, it was rash and abusive, but who else was checking him? Where was Viserys during his formative years to correct this behavior?
I do not condone any of his actions, but I grieve the person Aegon couldāve been if Viserys had not been his father.
Aemond, the Kinslayer
Iād reckon that Aemondās birth wasnāt quite the spectacle that Aegonās was, heās the second son, who inherits nothing.
When we first meet Aemond, heās miserable. He has a very low self esteem mostly due to all of his peers having dragon, while he doesnāt. His father, Viserys was the last mount of Balerion, the Black Dread. Balerion represents the strength and history of House Targaryen in Westeros. Heās the last dragon to have come from Old Valyria, and his first rider was the man who united Westeros under one crown, Aegon the Conqueror. Viserys took Balerion on one ride, and the old dragon died shortly after. He spent all of his rule as a Targaryen king without a dragon. We get no indication that he had negative feelings about not being a dragon rider, in fact, he finds power in the dreams and prophecies of Targaryens and Old Valyria, than the man power of dragons. Had he been around to salvage any feelings of unworthiness Aemond felt when his egg didnāt hatch, or when the riderless dragons in the dragon pit rejected him, Aemond wouldāve been less resentful about not having one.
So in this scene here, where he claims Vhagar, and rides her for the first time, itās a moment of legitimacy for him. Heās a Targaryen, with a dragon. He fits in with his siblings and his nephews, finally.
His claiming of Vhagar came with a price, his eye. Iām not going to delve into the mishap that took place between him, the Dragon twins and the Strong boys, because they were children. Baela and Rhaena had all right to be angry about Aemond claiming Vhagar, Luke had all right to defend his brother, Aemond had all right to react to their insults. Was he a bit insensitive ? Yes, but heās a kid. Theyāre all children. They do not have the same awareness and consideration adults should have.
The aftermath of that scene is a confrontation between Rhaenyra and Alicent.
There has been a lot of discourse about this scene in particular, but Emma Dāarcy and Olivia Cookeās is the one I resonate with the most :
ED: Itās such an interesting scene, right? My sympathy is fully with Alicent. On the page I was like, Well, sheās fucking right.
OC: Someoneās lost an eye.
ED: Someoneās lost an eye! Iām so amazed every time Paddy basically tells you to let it go. Simultaneously, Rhaenyra is playing quite a basic game: Lie hard, do not back down, and weaponize this word ātreason.ā
OC: Alicentās being gaslit massively and she fucking explodes. In friendships or relationships, when it gets to the point where you feel youāre going mad, thereās no route out other than complete volcanic annihilation.
ED: There is something resentfully delicious in it for Rhaenyra, in that she so rarely gets definitively the backing of her father. Early on, she loses both her best friend and her father because they get married. These moments where she gets publicly chosen, and chosen instead of you ā thereās a really violent quality of vengeance for her.
No Alicent should not have asked for a five year oldās eye. But her son, has just lost one. And his father, is more focused on the fact that his grandchildren were called bastards. Now Iām not discounting the fact that Westeros discriminates against bastards, but that could have been addressed afterwards. Viserys spent the entire scene promising his court that theyād lose a tongue for even uttering a word about his grandsons, while his son is sitting in a chair with his eye in front him on a plate. Aemond now has to learn how to maneuver around with one of his five senses damaged. (Honestly, I think a few scenes with Aemond struggling a bit with this wouldāve been great).
If Viserys had just acknowledged Aemondās detriment in that scene, maybe give him some reassurance, comfort, literally anything, he wouldnāt have remained vengeful years after the incident.
Helaena, the Dragon Dreamer
The parenting of Helaena is the best representation of Viserys and Alicentās dynamics with their kids,- Alicent struggling to connect with her child, while Viserys the parent who wouldāve had a better shot at connection is nowhere to be found.
Helaena has correctly predicted several events in House of the Dragon so far, the loss of Aemondās eye being the price of his dragon, Meleys bursting from beneath the dragon pit, and the Dance of the Dragons. The thing is, no one in universe is paying her any mind. The weight of prophecies in ASOIAF is a topic that George likes to explore, and heās given us a few tragic characters like Rhaegar, who met their doom by interpreting a prophecy āincorrectlyā.
Helaena is a dragon dreamer. Sheās also a dragon rider, but we have no scenes with her on Dreamfyre. She represents the more mystical part of House Targaryen, as she possesses the power that prevented them from the Doom. Yet her father, who is a deeply interested in these aspects of being Targaryen, doesnāt speak to her about these things.
If Viserys had made an attempt to understand or simply bond with his daughter, none of the atrocities his family faced would have happened the way it did.
My sympathy for Team Green stems from the fact that literally every single one of them wouldāve been way better people if not for Viserys.

The Dragon Prince & Queer Subtext - Fandom and Media Analysis of Sort
Lately Iāve been pondering about the ins and outs of Viren and Aaravosās relationship and why they give off such a queer vibe. So I ended up writing this 2 and half Word document pages long little breakdown because why not.
I think whatās going on here is about the underlying elements of the story- subtext and how their relationship could be perceived through a queer lens. Note: my brain has marinated in queer subtext juices my whole life and I have no intent trying to prove my reading is the only right one.
That Sweet Sweet Gay Shit- A Fandom Perspective
There is a lot of queer subtext between them. Homoerotic subtext even. Their scenes together definitely activated the search function in my brainās queer coded villain trope lexicon.Ā
You know- mutual penetration with a phallic object (knife), sharing some kind of mysterious bond through blood magic, so, you know, bodily fluids are indeed involved, the classic slash fiction trope āwe are close but we cannot touchā -gay pining because the mirror separates them. When Aaravos is shown for the first time in the mirror the camera does this Laura Mulvey Male Gaze 101 up-down pan shot of him from Virenās POV. Something thatās usually reserved for female characters when male characters ācheck them outā in a movie. And then my personal favourite: Something that comes out of Aaravos enters Viren, comes out and then transforms into a creature with a toddler level intelligence- they made a freaky little metaphor baby together! Awwww!
And let's not even talk about the possession and Aaravos slowly taking over Virenās body. The aesthetics of a toxic queer romance are all over their interactions.
No, Viren! Donāt express vulnerability as an intimidating male figure! Tumblr will babygirlify you!
Storytelling
So what about their interactions makes me perceive them in a queer way? By āqueerā I mean the broader concept of queer here; does the way the characters are depicted come across non-heteronormative and disruptive to gender norms.
Iām mostly talking about the season 2 here since they share their most intimate scenes together in that season.
1 Story Function
Aaravos and Virenās interactions are supposed to have multiple purposes in the story: They move the plot forward, characterise both Viren and Aaravos, create emotional conflict and intrigue in the viewer etc. Viren observing Aaravos through the mirror is supposed to create mystery and spark the audienceās curiosity. Viren is a device through which Aaravosās allure gets demonstrated to the viewer so of course their interactions come across pretty, hm, charged. Anyway there are layers of meaning here the audience can interpret in multiple ways both intuitively and through an analytic lens. The meaning naturally changes the more context we get. There are still three more seasons to come.
2 Gendered Tropes
There is a certain element of seduction present: Viren gives Aaravos more access to himself and his body little by little in exchange for Aaravos fulfilling his desires (for power). This could be read as having sexual undertones. Some of Aaravosās first words to Viren are clearly something Viren wants to hear āHow may I serve you?ā Weaponising manipulation and seduction, where a character poses as submissive while having alternative motives, is something female characters traditionally do in stories. I donāt know about you but Aaravosās character has a bit of a femme fatale thing going on if you ask me (haha!) There is something about him that defies gender roles thatās not just about his androgynous looks.
A traditional Femme fatale is often a tragic figure trapped in unfortunate circumstances. They are shrouded in mystery which prevents the audience from empathising with them or understanding their motives. The character often uses coercion to make their victim do what they want. And yes there definitely is an element of coercion and even a threat of violence present in Aaravos and Virenās relationship. Their goals are aligned for now but what happens if/ when Viren decides to defy Aaravos? TDP makes me wonder (with horror) what it is that Viren has really agreed to.
3 How the Showās āCameraā Portrays Aaravos
Even the camera emphasises him as an object of desire. Something he is from the story point of view as well. Viren desires access to Aaravosās power after all. When the camera puts Aaravos on display in an objectified manner in the beginning of the season 2 itās supposed to, in my opinion, heighten the feeling of Aaravos seeming harmless at the first glance. And by āobjectifiedā I mean heās portrayed without agency.
I joked earlier about male gaze and Laura Mulvey but I do actually think there is some truth to that. One of the biggest reasons behind me thinking Aaravos was a pretty pretty lady at first was how he was introduced in such a feminised way. And I wasnāt the only one. Just look at the comments under his TDP Wiki article. (Lots of het men being confused about their sexuality. Also shout-out to that one lesbian). This makes him appear less threatening so the story can build suspense around his true motives. Itās not evident that Aaravos is a completely sinister figure at first, at least compared to Viren who seems more like the main villain of the story prior to the seasons 3-4. Little did we know back then that Aaravos was the true alpha male of this whole sordid affair.
Aaravos in the mirror from Virenās point of view, season 2, episode 3.
Why Iām not mentioning anything about Virenās gender performance is because his story conflict is all about struggling with traditionally masculine gender expectations. Understanding how his character relates to hegemonic/ toxic masculinity/ emotional struggles men face in real life is a core part of understanding his character as a whole. Thatās a broad topic and this post is long enough as it is so Iām going to leave it at that. (Maybe someone else has written about that already?)
4 The Audience Is Also at Aaravosās Mercy
Aaravosās submissive faƧade is supposed to fool both Viren AND the audience. The show plays rather cleverly with the audienceās expectations here. Slowly the roles are starting to flip until itās clear that Aaravos is the one in control. Given Aaravos narrates the opening of the first story arc it raises even more questions: Is his control over Viren supposed to parallel his control over the whole world of the show? This circles back to the showās themes of freedom vs destiny. It feels almost meta in a way how the storyās villain tries to gain control over the whole narrative.
5 Horror and Fantasy
The powerplay between the characters naturally creates a plenty of tension and itās not unusual that this translates into something sexually charged in the audienceās minds. While this is the perspective Iām the most interested in, there are other layers to Aaravos and Virenās scenes together.
For example this kind of breaking of bodily boundaries is common in horror as well. Aaravos is beautiful and mysterious but is also associated with repulsive things like larvae and blood and there is something very eerie about him in general. These kinds of emotional reactions of repulsion and attraction are essential to horror. The audience sees that everything isnāt definitely quite right about him but itās also understandable that the audience (and Viren) find him fascinating. I think the key word for these scenes in the season 2 is āambiguityā. Even if you arenāt invested in these characters this show would be much less fun without all the nuance their interactions have.
In a good story everything isnāt just literal. Especially since TDP is a fantasy story- A genre thatās traditionally been all about symbolism and intertextual references. I could go on and on about the genre traditions with similar flavour to what Aaravos and Viren have. Michael Moorcockās classic sword and sorcery antihero Elric of MelnibonĆ© and his pact with the demon Arioch comes to mind.
Something Something Fandom
Viravos as a ship lives in the subtext but the subtext isnāt always black and white. Fiction uses metaphor and other storytelling methods to create meaning- To give a narrative experience. The queer subtext in TDP feels very elaborate to me and while Iām dissecting these scenes more analytically here my emotional reactions are the original source of that interest. No matter how much time passes Iām still a morbid teenage goth at heart and that part of me loves the dark fairytale aesthetics akin to TDP season 2.
I didnāt even touch on the element of Viren giving into a āforbidden desireā (literally his desire for power but- you know- multiple readings etc.) when making a deal with Aaravos. Something very typical to the horror genre as well. Itās a ādeal with the devilā -sort of situation and those stories often paint the agreement as something corruptive and sinful and therefore transgressive. This post by Tiredsunrisesmeta got you covered on that. Also queer coded villains something something- Anyway, read Tiredsunrisesmetaās blog for more.
Pictured: Yours truly
Last and Least
I remember when I saw a post here saying that āViravos couldnāt be canon because itād be too sexy.ā and thatās just the funniest way to put it in my opinion. Their relationship feels a bit too, I dunno, mature? for this show. But what does ācanonā even mean? Is a gay ship canon when two characters of the same gender kiss and declare their love? Get married? Have kids? Personally, I donāt want to see LGBT+ charactersā stories just copy straight romance tropes beat by beat all the time. I want something that feels authentic and whatās more authentic than Viren being a cringefail bisexual getting rejected by men and women and then getting his life ruined by the sexy femboy elf satan? Kinda iconic honestly.

Ranma 1/2 Intro for Newcomers
The popular classic anime Ranma 1/2 is getting a remake. Ranma tends to be a favorite among older anime crowds, but it's not very known by today's generation, and since the remake will lead to a spike in interest for the Ranma franchise, here is everything you need to know.
Ranma 1/2 was created by Rumiko Takahashi, the same author behind Urusei Yatsura, whose remake recently wrapped up, and Inuyasha. The basic premise is about a young martial artist named Ranma who is cursed to turn into a girl when splashed with cold water, and can turn back into a guy when splashed with hot water. He is engaged to be married to a girl named Akane, who has a hot temper and bickers with him a lot. Soon, Ranma, both in male and female forms, attracts multiple admirers who try to win his affection, as does Akane, resulting in a humongous love dodecahedron balanced with comedy and martial-arts action.
Things to know:
Ranma pioneered the harem anime genre, but it is very different from the stuff you see nowadays, since his harem is pretty small compared to others (he only ends up being engaged to three girls), and Ranma is not a bland self-insert like modern harem protags. He actually has a personality, agency, and is not perverted like other harem MCs. That doesn't stop Akane from mistaking him for one though.
There is a lot of wacky slapstick humor in the series, usually consisting of Akane punching Ranma. Akane and Ranma both qualify as tsundere characters. They do actually love each other even though they fight a lot, they're just too insecure to show it.
Other characters possess their own curses. Ranma's father is cursed to turn into a panda; Shampoo, one of Ranma's fiancee, is cursed to turn into a cat, Mousse, who has an unrequited crush on Shampoo, is cursed to turn into a duck; and Ryoga, who has a crush on Akane, is cursed to turn into a pig named "P-Chan"
Although martial arts is a big part of the story, I'd say most of the drama and development are centered around the romance stuff.
Unlike other shonen series, who stretch out their arcs, Ranma has multiple small, self-contained arcs focused on introducing new characters or martial arts techniques. A complete list of them is available here.
The anime has a lot of filler episodes (as in, not adapted from the manga), but a few of them are worth watching. My personal favorites are Akane Goes to the Hospital and Am I... Pretty? Ranma's Declaration of Womanhood
Ranma has a huge LGBT following due to its gender bending premise. Many transfems cite it as helping them realize they were trans. The title character is commonly interpreted to be a trans woman, genderfluid, bigender, etc. The latter episode mentioned above is a favorite among them because in it, Ranma hits his head and starts acting girlier, even in his male form. This is notable because Ranma usually seems to not like his female form. Like other amnesia episodes, this doesn't last, but Ranma seemed genuinely happier like this.
That said, the series is also outdated in some respects. Look no further than the Tsubasa arc. The character, Tsubasa, was originally thought to be a lesbian, which disgusted the characters. It turns out that he's actually a cishet guy who likes crossdressing, which relieves the characters, but still disgusts them because of the crossdressing part. It's painful to watch.
The earlier episodes of the anime have lots of uncensored nudity (male and female alike), even showing nipples. This gets dialed back in later seasons, though. I don't recall Ukyo, the last of Ranma's fiances, ever getting nude scenes like Akane and Shampoo did. Itās not pornographic by any means, itās just kinda there.
All of the characters are flawed people (except for Kasumi) who do bad things, some worse than others. This is what makes the series funny and interesting
There is a perverted character named Happosai, an old guy who likes stealing girls underwear. Unlike a character like Master Roshi, however, Happosai is not a good guy. Heās one of the villains in the series and is consistently portrayed in a negative light, since, besides being a pervert, he abused Genma and Soun.
There are technically two runs of the original anime. The first run ran for 18 episodes before being cancelled. Soon, it came back with a much longer run called āRanma 1/2 Netto-hen.ā The martial arts figure skating arc episodes were supposed to be in the original run, but they were pulled because of then-current events. The arc involves P-chan being kidnapped, and around the time it was supposed to air, Tsutomu Miyazaki kidnapped and murdered several young girls. The arc was later aired as part of Nettohen, but on the Blu-ray and on streaming, the arc is included as part of season 1.
Ranma had some of the earliest āwaifu warsā in anime fandom. In the early days of the internet, people would go into ātrench warsā on forums about whether Akane, Shampoo, or Ukyo is better itās Akane btw
Ranma has a very large fan fiction presence, so youāll likely never run out of Ranma fics to read
Ranma has a large Mexican fanbase, and it is very easy to find fan pages and information in Spanish. Itās popular in Mexico for the same reason that Dragon Ball is - it aired on local TV in the 80s and 90s.
The anime was dubbed in Vancouver, and you might recognize familiar voices from the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, and Death Note. Brigitta Dau was the first voice of female Ranma, but after six episodes, she moved away and was replaced by Venus Terzo for the rest of the series. In the dub, male Ranma was actually voiced by a woman, Sarah Strange, at first, but starting with episode 65, she was replaced by a man, Richard Ian Cox. Good luck trying to unhear Inuyasha.
Besides the anime series, there are several movies and OVAs, some of which adapt manga stories.
The anime is available on Tubi, Peacock, and Hulu

Though on genderswap Mitsukou? What would their characters belike both appearance and personality wise?
Yuri Mitsukou!! I love this question
So awhile back I posted smth like āno fem4masc Yuri Mitsukou it has to be masc4mascā which like. I donāt really agree with anymore. I like that in canon one of them is feminine while the other is masculine and itās not really done in a stereotypical way. Fandoms make a really big deal about people feminizing male characters- and for good reason, it does happen a lot. But that gets taken to the point that they end up unintentionally reinforcing traditional gender roles. āHow dare you draw that man in a skirtā or āthat male character would never cry.ā Itās also weird to me that I never see the same defense given to female characters being masculinized, so it ends up feeling like a lot of fans just hate femininity. So when a male character is feminine and seemingly likes masc dudes but has one of the loudest personalities in the manga, I think itās pretty neat. Ofc there are fans that are weirdly against calling Mitsuba feminine but I already blocked most of them so idk what they have to say
(I could talk more in-depth about how fans are so worried about feminizing Mitsuba that they erase all the soft parts of his personality and make him one-dimensional but Iāll hold my tongue)
However, with fem!Mitsuba things are usually portrayed differently. Since dude Mitsubaās initial conflict was being bullied for looking like a girl, most people say that the reverse would be girl Mitsuba being bullied for looking like a dude. This is fine but we also have to keep in mind that the entire gag of Mitsubaās character is that he looks feminine but has an unfiltered personality, based on his looks you would never expect him to act that way. So if girl Mitsuba looks boyish, does that mean her personality would be super soft and delicate?? Because, yeah Mitsuba does have a soft side but not in that way, and itās not at the forefront of his personality. Plus girl Mitsuba could still get bullied for looking too feminine, internalized misogyny is very much a thing
However, at the end of the day it really depends on personal preference so Iām not at all bashing either depiction of fem!Mitsuba. I go back and forth over which one I like more. Gender themes are a pretty big part of how I write Mitsukou so itās hard for me to imagine that switched up, but itās also incredibly interesting to think abt. All in all I like to keep fem!Mitsuba looking androgynous, maybe she has a boyish face but still dresses very feminine. Or maybe she has a girly face but dresses very masc. Itās one of those things I like a variety of interpretation on. For this I say she keeps the same hair length and pink cardigan but wears the girls uniform. So like yeah she basically just looks the same
As for Kou, those of you that read my wlw Kou//Nene fic should know that masc girl Kou is actually everything to me. A lot of fans sort of flip their gender presentations when gender bending them- Mitsuba becomes masc and Kou becomes fem. Thatās totally great if thatās what you like but for me personally Kou is gonna be wearing Old Spice. I like to imagine her hair a tad longer in the back, like a choppy version of the Bisexual Bob. She wears some type of hoodie over her uniform the same way canon Kou wears a t-shirt under his uniform. The hoodie is blue btw (gotta incorporate the lore from my mtsk fics)
I feel like their personalities and dynamic would stay mostly the same! Maybe make them a bit clingier the way female friendships are but theyāre already pretty clingy in canon lol. I do wonder if Kouās flaw of not being able to open up about his feelings properly would change due to gender socialization. But many women (including myself) have that problem too so I think it would stay the same. She might be able to open up to Teru or Yokoo and Satou better but sheād still struggle to admit when sheās feeling overwhelmed. I could see her not being the type to tell someone how sheās feeling until all those emotions have built up for months. Thatās how Iāve seen the whole ācanāt talk abt your emotionsā problem present itself in women. And men tend to only feel comfortable opening up to their romantic partners, which is something we very much see with Mitsukou in canon. But with fem!Kou, if Yokoo and Satou were girls two they would probably encourage her to talk abt her feelings rather than just being like āletās give him a task to distract himā (which is fine too, men have different ways of comforting their friends)
Thank you for this ask!!

Wow, itās such a relief to find people who donāt like Haikaveh either. Was really disappointed when I read Sethosās voiceline.. I am bisexual and I think that Haikaveh (along with many other pairings) is queerbaiting and some type of fetish. Iāve made a long written analysis on why I think it is and how I think itās offensive, simply because I find it interesting and enjoy analyzing things. Really love their duo and theyāre great parallels but they fit a sibling / platonic soulmate duo better than a romantic one š¤¦āāļø Itās getting annoying at this point and I wish Hoyoverse would stop, but it earns them attention and money so why would they? Just want to enjoy my favorite character without him being used as an accessory for another. Disappoints me that other gay people donāt notice (or care) that they are being stereotypical themselves and that Hoyoverse is basically using our sexualities for accessories and money. Havenāt looked into the translation thing with Sethosās voiceline but if itās true it was more neutral in CN, then thatās interesting. The same Haikaveh defenders will yap about how āCN is the original!1!1!1ā but if you bring something like this translation up they lose it. Hoyoverse has never been a āgay representationā company, itās a queer-baiting one. š¤¦āāļø But at the same time, I donāt really even care. Iām not a gay person who cares much about my sexuality or others, but things like this are frustrating. Wish there were more people who understand my view on why I think their presentation is harmful.
- šŖ· / šŖ½
Hello šŖ·/šŖ½ Anon! (Let me know if you want to go by both emojis or just one) Welcome to our small club of not being into Haikaveh (or most Hoyoverse queer ships).
I agree with you that Kaveh and Haitham have a very sibling/platonic dynamic. In fact, their bickering reminds me a lot of my younger siblingsā bickering, so I view them as brothers, as well. Itās just unfortunate that the fandom rejects any interpretation thatās not romantic.
I also wish Mihoyo would stop, but theyāre obsessed with tossing ship crumbs, and only to the most popular ships. As you said, it makes them money, so they have no reason to stop.
There is definitely some queerbaiting in Genshin, but I would say itās not as bad as in HSR. HSR sometimes made me very uncomfortable with the fetishization of some of their ships, and I wondered if a man wrote it for a straight male audienceā¦
Mihoyo has always had a history of wanting to include same-sex pairings in their games. Honkai Impact 3rd has a confirmed lesbian MC, and also two other female characters who canonically kiss (but due to updated laws in China, they had to remove that scene).
It doesnāt surprise me that they want to do similar things in Genshin and HSR, but they never commit to the ships. They only tease and hint at them, ala āThere might be something between these characters, but also not really, but what ifā¦?ā and this is pretty much exclusive to same-sex pairings. This teasing and hinting makes the fandom so much worse to be in. Lots of other gacha games donāt do this, but for whatever reason, Mihoyo does.
I suspect some of the employees working on the game may be queer or have a huge interest in BL and GL (though itās probably a mix of both), which is why they make all these ship crumbs. Thereās nothing wrong with having queer relationships in games and other media, but the way they go about it feelsā¦ fetishizing, I guess? It doesnāt feel genuine. I canāt quite put my finger on what feels so off about this. You would know about this far more than me since you analyzed this already, so if you have interpretations you want to add, Iāll gladly hear you out.
It sucks because they market their games as being for all audiences, but then do things with a heavy bias for certain ships. It makes it so difficult to enjoy characters the way you want when the developer and fandom constantly shove in your face that your favorite character has an implied relationship or some other such thing.
Regarding the Sethos voicelineā¦ my friend in China, who also dislikes Haikaveh, complained to me about it the other day. She said the original Chinese text felt like it was implying something between Kaveh and Haitham. Of course, that is just her personal interpretation, and some people donāt see a deeper meaning behind the words. However, it goes to show that even the Chinese audience can tell something is up with the voiceline, so it might not be as neutral as we hoped.
Iām all for more media having queer rep, but Mihoyo doesnāt do it right. I really wish I could just play their games without having ship teasing slapped in my face, but alas, they wonāt ever change. At this point, itās better to not play any of their games (though maybe Tears of Themis can stay) and ditch the fandoms for your peace of mind.

I do not think Jegulus is inherently misogynistic but I think their existence as a popular ship perfectly showcases the larger problem of misogyny in the Marauders fandom.
This fandom is painfully male centered with an unhealthy obsession with mlm ships, no matter how nonsensical they are. Jegulus, with all due respect, is a nonsense ship. I know some people like to ignore canon and make everything up but I donāt. Jegulus can work fine in AUs but not in canon compliant fics. And whenever Jegulus shippers speak about what makes them compelling, they always bring up tropes - brotherās best friend, sunshine x grumpy (donāt even get me started on thinking James Potter is a sunshine but thatās beside the point), enemies to lovers, etc. All that is meaningless to me. Shipping based on tropes is ridiculous because none of those tropes matter when James and Regulus, from what we know of their characters, are completely incompatible as people. I wonāt speak on Regulus because we have little information about it and itās easy to treat him as a blank sheet (although I think heās too whitewashed) but we know a lot about James, including that he despised Slytherins, Death Eaters and the dark arts. So, in order for Jegulus to work, James has to become an unrecognizable character from what he actually is in canon. You are not writing about James Potter. You are creating an OC and slapping Jamesā name on it. Jegulus was born out of this weird necessity the fandom has for mlm ships. Take Drarry and Wolfstar as an example. Those ships arenāt canon but they have some canon basis because those couples interacted, had a dynamic together, had interactions and lore that could be interpreted in different ways. With Jegulus, itās all made up.
And this leads me to Lily and by extent, the other girls. Lily was the main female character in the Marauders Era and Jily was the second biggest ship. Since Jegulus gained popularity, Lily has been sidelined, her story has been co-opted, even her own child gets snatched from her and given to Regulus. The girls that before had some developed (nowhere near enough because this fandom has always been misogynistic, letās not get it twisted), have been shoved to the side or used as tools to further mlm ships. The reason why thereās such a pushback against sapphic!Lily, per example, is because unfortunately some people (definitely not all and definitely not sapphic women in this fandom) really only use that to get her out of the way of Jegulus and thatās the case for many wlw ships in the fandom. All they get is the yearly āI love [insert wlw ship]ā tweet but get no more content or develop, unlike the men.
The general treatment of the girls is terrible too. The biggest Jegulus fic, Choices, has Regulus covering up Maryās SA and James cheating on a pregnant Lily and yet we are supposed to root for them in the end. ATYD has Mary being routinely humiliated by both Sirius and Remus and we are supposed to be okay with it because theyāre just two closeted teen boys navigating the world. Pandora and Dorcas have been placed in Slytherin and made besties with Death Eaters to make horrible men more sympathetic and so they can serve as therapists and saviors to people who joined a wizard terrorist group.
I could go on. I am genuinely not trying to be rude or aggressive, just giving my opinion. As I said, Jegulus shippers are not all misogynistic but Jegulusā popularity showcases the implicit biases against women in the fandom. Other mlm ships and I will keep using Drarry and Wolfstar as examples have also led to the erasure and mistreatment of women. But itās harder to justify Jegulus because unlike those other two ships, Jegulus is a completely random pairing that feels like was born out of the desire to pair James with a man rather than any interesting interactions those two characters had.
Hi!
Firstly, thank you for sharing your thoughts on it! I see your perspective well and agree with a lot of your points.
(Excuse my yapping below, it helps me get my thoughts out better and to better understand your points!)
For anyone reading this, please note that there are spoilers for atyd and choices below!
This fandom is definitely male-centered and I see your point on how focused the mlm ships this fandom is on. With the ships of wolfstar, the joke-gone-serious ship of jegulus, and the babygirlification and pairing of rosekiller, etc, etc...
I understand the canon compliant vs fanon complaint argument. I think that's where the lines get blurred when it comes to people's views on ships. Canon and Fanon are two completely different ball games when is comes with things making sense and what doesn't.
I lean more towards fanon compliant fics so for me that's where Jegulus makes sense to me because like you said, it's basically OCs with their names slapped on them. It's easier to mold them to work that way, so it's easier to ship them. Also I just love the idea of Sapphic!Lily too which was a concept I thought about before I even knew about Jegulus, honestly.
For canon-compliance, I am all for Jily 100% because it's canon-compliant. You can't fight with it. Even though wolfstar isn't canon, it makes sense to have them be something where as James and Regulus wouldn't have been anything. And I agree with you, they only work in AUs or fanon concepts.
With that being said, I also recognize the misogynistic nature of the fandom. I definitely don't agree with Jegulus raising Harry, because that's literally Jily's child (if anyone does, no hate towards you It's just doesn't sit well with me personally) and it begs the question, what happened with Lily that Jegulus has Harry?
I also agree with your point about how the girls/wlw ships in the fandom don't get a lot of development. I think it's a shame, truly. However, I have, recently, seen some people have different Headcanons of how they are as people. So I'm hoping that develops into something more than just ideas floating around. I also am not sure how they are in canon-compliant fics besides atyd (which I do have my opinions on too and im only halfway through it). I haven't read choices yet so I can only take your word for it.
I do at some point want to make a full long, academic-esque essay about the misogynistic nature of the fandom, because I do have A LOT to say, ESPECIALLY with the treatment of Mary. There's definitely a lot to unpack.
I'm fairly new to the Marauders fandom, so I'm trying to learn what I can. Again, thank you for sharing your perspective! I appreciate it!

Since weāve been told that the cobalt / cerulean caste is predominantly male , and Mindfang is a female pirate that exists in opposition to the Alternian ārule of lawā, i assume sheās a deviation from the standard of her casteās expectations. what do you think the predominantly male law abiding cobalts do in Alternian society?
lately my assessment has been kind of leaning towards the idea that, in the sense that all of the castes were designed specifically to produce the 12 homestuck trolls; maybe the grand cosmic role of the cobalt caste is that they deviate?
beyond the fact that Vriska's job aspiration is seemingly to be a "gamblignant" (which unlike any of the other trolls' aspirations is very clearly not a real occupation), basically the one suggestion of a cerulean culture Hussie gives us is this line of commentary from Homestuck: Book 4, page 192:
The fact that [Vriska and Equius are] neighbors suggests there isn't that big a divide between blue and indigo in terms of status and daily life. Both classes probably cluster together somewhat in a kind of snobby symbiosis, since they're one notch below purple-blooded clown hell [...and] one notch above the jade and teal middling classes...
i've interpreted this symbiosis before as "man and wife" castes, as the cobalt caste having become vestigial or ornamental out of a lack of any other purpose of its own. and if Caliborn separated the trolls out into twelve classes in a mirror image of Sburb's twelve classes, it makes sense that the caste designated as the "Thief class" would be peculiar in this kind of way. Hiveswap's bluebloods being jobless malignants described as "vriskas" of varying kinds seems to play with that kind of idea.
but the blueblood symbiosis manifests itself in different configurations, and for a while it's Serket who harbours Zahhak; because Mindfang isn't merely a malignant outlaw. she's a Marquise, she's royalty! at least for a time, it seems that the gamblignants were allowed to operate as a nation of their own. so there's a historical precedent for at least some cobaltbloods operating as free agents while still filling a niche within the broader troll social paradigm.
presumably with the decimation of the gamblignants and the establishment of the modern Alternia, a lot of this potential for freedom disappeared; hence Vriska's shrinking into Equius' cultural shadow. but as Hussie suggests in his commentary, while the middling castes "revolve around more functional, municipal services", the bluebloods are true nobility, so there's probably still a lot of freedom available to them in terms of what roles they can fill as law-abiding citizens. if the primary role of the indigo caste is to uphold the regime of the purple bloods above, there's surely plenty of jobs that need doing in that sector, and so far as we know a troll of cerulean blood has the same opportunities to take these jobs; just with perhaps a little bit more ridicule and a little bit less social cachet.

Hello! A few days ago I was thinking about yoonmin (as I often do hehehe) and I started thinking about jimin and his gender. Now, I'm not sure if he identifies as anything other than male, but it's safe to say that he has struggled with masculinity and toxic expectations when he was younger. There have been some instances in the last few years were there have been some non-bn references, the first ones that come to mind are the fotoshoot with the bigender symbol and taemin's words on suchwita (ājimin also has that gender-neutral charm and also delicateā).
What I wanted to ask you is how do you think gender has impacted yoonmin?
I don't know if you've ever received an anon about this topic but I was curious about your opinion š
Personally, I think Jimin struggled a lot in his early years since he felt the pressure to fullfil this assigned strong masculine roll within the group (when they made him lift his shirt and do things like that). From what he's said in interviews, he later learned to accept himself and I can only think about how reassuring it must have been to have someone as accepting and supportive as yoongi by his side. I feel like yoongi is the kind of person who would encourage him to freely explore his gender (his bestie Halsey uses she/they pronouns by the way) and especially through his art (when face came out some ppl interpreted as Jimin talking about his gender and I found it very interesting).
Anyways, I feel like I'm just rambling haha. To sum up we don't know if he's 100% non-bn, he may still identify as a cis man, but still it's safe to say that he has been exploring his gender in the past.
(We'll probably never get a confirmation if he's actually non-bn, unless things in Korea change A LOT.)
Hi anon! Your question about gender in terms of yoonmin is a good one and something I have wondered about too!
First of all, I agree with you regarding Jimin and his relationship with gender. Weāve gotten many clues (and what I would consider more than clues) about this.
In regards to yoonmin as a pair, one thing Iāve noticed are the types of words Yoongi uses to describe Jimin. Yes, heās called him handsome. But heās also used gender-neutral or even traditionally feminine adjectives to describe him: āsexy,ā āpretty,ā āsmall and cute.ā I think he does this because he knows these are the type of words that Jimin enjoys. Typically, when someone gives a compliment, their words are tailored to fit the person they are complimenting.
Another example: when Yoongi quoted the k-drama line to Jimin backstage in Newark, he quoted the male characterās line thus placing Jimin in the female role in that scenario.
(Likewise, Yoongi seems to be perfectly fine with Jimin referring to him as ācuteā and ābaby,ā which to me shows a level of open mindedness that, unfortunately, many men lack.)
Theyāre both smart people and theyāve been in the entertainment industry long enough to know how fans analyze things. So, even if the female lead in the Like Crazy choreo isnāt Jiminās reflection (although I believe she is), he at least would have known that some people would interpret that wayā¦and he was fine with that. Similarly, by now Yoongi knows what many fans think of his Cypher 3 verse. Yet years later, he included that verse, unchanged, in his D-Day set list.
Iām rambling now, but my point is they have both demonstrated an accepting/progressive attitude toward these issues and have not attempted to āset the record straightā when it comes to gender (or sexual orientation, for that matter).
Obviously, Yoongi and Jimin are individuals and each of them has their own unique feelings about gender. We can see differences in terms of how they present themselves. But I do see commonalities in terms of their way of thinking, their acceptance of themselves and their acceptance of others. I hope that makes sense!
Hereās Jimin playing with the idea of gender roles and putting himself in the feminine role: shocked that heās been caught shirtless, while he places the viewer, who is likely to be female given Armyās demographics, in the role of the voyeur (typically thought of as the masculine role). He seems to love doing this, turning the tables and offering unexpected and non-traditional portrayals of gender roles.
Hereās a video of Jimin talking about how heās changed and grown over the years.
Hereās a video of Jimin showing (again) that heās comfortable playing with the idea of traditional gender roles.
Hereās Yoongi saying in an interview that everyone is equal.
Hereās a photo of Yoongi wearing his pride Vans.
Hereās a really cute video of Yoongi with a male fan. (He is treating the male fan the same way heād treat a female fan, giving the high-five and the cute pout. Like he said in the interview, āeveryone is equal,ā and he treats fans accordingly. I love this video!)
In Yoongiās case, I understand that these are not examples related to gender specifically. I see these as clues to his world view and his inclusivity, and of course Iām sure he extends that way of thinking to Jimin.
I hope this made sense! Thanks for this ask, anon!

New Sonic media needs to introduce more heroic male characters to the lineup.
Normally I like my takes quick and spicy and let people come to their own conclusions with them, but out of all my thoughts on the series that Iāve shared with fellow Sonic fans, this one tends to get the most ire. Bellow the cut are my more in depth thoughts on the matter.
I may be forgetting someone but Iām pretty sure the last character the series introduced that was simultaneously a guy, a hero, and had any sort of staying power was Silver all the way back in TWO THOUSAND SIX. This applies to ALL Sonic media/canon, by the way (be it the games, comics, spin offs like Boom, etc.)
The closest character I could think of that fills this criteria is Razor from the post-reboot Archie comicsāhe did appear in both the main comic and Sonic Universe, and was the only new character to get his own SCO backstoryābut for obvious reasons heās not showing up again any time soon. I donāt count Chip or Yacker since theyāre pretty blatantly meant to be one off characters that fill a specific niche for that gameās plot. Also letās be real theyāre both mid as hell
Compare this to the girls: Sticks, Tangle, Whisper, Sage (who is framed as more of an antihero in Frontiers than a villain), Trip, this new girl from Dream Teamā¦
People scream sexist at me whenever I bring this up, which is ironic because I am a Girlā¢ myself. My favorite Sonic character, Blaze, is a Girlā¢. Sticks is one of my favorite additions to the series in a long time, and sheās a Girlā¢. Iām not against Girlā¢ in Sonic.
BUT it does make me raise a brow looking at the track record of new characters that have been introduced to the series, specifically when it comes to gender and morality alignment. This is a lot more prevalent in the IDW comics than in the games, but itās present in both.
Since Colors (which signaled a shift in direction in the series), the new antagonists weāve gotten in the games are: Orbot and Cubot, the mostly male Deadly Six, the Hardboiled Heavies (if you wanna count them), Infinite, and Sage (kind of). In the IDW comics, weāve gotten Rough and Tumble, Dr. Starline, Mimic, Clutch, Kit, and Surge.
In the same time period, the new leading/supporting protagonists weāve gotten in the games are Yacker, the Forces OC, Sage (kind of), Trip, and Ariem (the new girl from Dream Team). You can also squeeze Sticks in here since sheās the only Boom character to get any extra relevance or spotlight on her outside of that spin off. In the IDW comics, weāve gotten Tangle, Whisper, Jewel, Belle, and Lanolin.
Sure, thereās a little overlap here and there. But you should notice a pattern.
Do not interpret this as me saying that Sonic Team or the writers at IDW have some kind of anti-men agenda going on. Thatās not what Iām suggesting. BUT I am getting tired of every new hero being a girl and just about every new villain being a boy. Canāt we switch it up a little?
Even the most prominent female antagonists in the series have some kind of sympathetic edge to them. Surge was brainwashed and experimented on by Starline. Sageās character arc is supposed to be the focal point of Frontiers, and she only does evil things under Eggmanās command. Trip isnāt even evil in the first place, she just ends up working with Eggman and Fang forā¦reasons, and ultimately turns against them and becomes a playable hero. Theyāre not framed the same way that most, if not all of the male villains are. Not even Merlina is fully immune of this.
Outside of the sexist allegations, I usually get one of two responses whenever I bring this up:
A lot of Sonic fans are girls, so the series should introduce more female characters in order to appeal to their female fans.
The series already has a lot of male characters, so they need to balance out the cast with more girls.
Both of these points have their merits and flaws. I think that both of them are/were true up to a certain point, but nowadays they donāt hold up as well after we HAVE gotten tons of new female characters. When Sticks and Tangle were first shown off, I was ecstatic! Sticks being a fourth wall breaking conspiracy theorist is both tons of fun and a character archetype that the series hadnāt explored until then, and Tangle has one of my favorite designs of any Sonic character. But at some point, I started to notice the trend of every new hero being a girl and every new villain being a boy, and it really started to bother me. For IDW Sonic it was around the time Belle and Clutch were introduced (with Lanolin ultimately being the straw that broke the camelās backāshe insists upon herself), and for the games it was after seeing Ariem in Dream Team (I probably wouldāve been more annoyed by the Fang/Trip dichotomy if I wasnāt absolutely joyous that the Nack Is Baaaaack). The whole āwe need to introduce more girls to the seriesā angle doesnāt hold up as well when the series seems reluctant to commit to a straight up evil girl. Sonic desperately needs to flesh out his rouges gallery in the games, so why not add an absolutely psycho female antagonist?
Also this is a more personal note but I hate hate HATE it when people allege that girls canāt relate to male characters, so franchises need to introduce the Girlā¢ character so the Girlsā¢ can relate to her. Can girls not relate to boys? Can boys not relate to girls? Once again, not against female characters in general, but that particular mindset has and will always bother me.
Who knows, maybe Ariem will end up being the main villain of Dream Team. Itād be cool, but I donāt see Sonic Team taking that route, especially not on an Apple Arcade exclusive. I donāt expect any big twists in that game.
Those are my two cents. I just think itād be cool if we got a new boy as well as all the new girls weāve been getting.
