Do you love Barbarians, Brutes, and Babes?
Do you love Barbarians, Brutes, and Babes?
Then you’ll want to check out our latest release. After years of reading classics like Swiss Family Robinson, The Time Machine, and Mutiny on the Bounty, I came across my first piece of genre fiction, hidden behind other books in the school library. And that book, was Conan of Cimmeria, a collection of short stories written by Robert E. Howard. I fell in love with the action-adventure / sword…

Forest Kingdom series by Simon R. Green
Blue Moon Rising (1991), Blood and Honour (1992), & Down Among the Dead Men (1993)
Cover art by David Farren
Gollancz, 1991-1993
Blue Moon Rising (1991)
Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself-a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch-and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood.
Rupert did find a fiery dragon-and a beautiful princess to rescue. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle, and with the evil of Darkwood spreading, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get.
Blood and Honour (1992)
Jordan had always prided himself on his acting abilities, but now he faced the challenge of his career. Magicked into looking exactly like Prince Viktor, middle son of the recently assassinated King Malcolm, Jordan had been hired to pretend to be the prince as a war of succession raged at Castle Midnight. With both Viktor's elder brother, Lewis, and his younger brother, Dominic, only too eager to dispatch their middle sibling, thereby increasing their own chances to gain the crown, Jordan soon found himself hard pressed to survive. And in a castle where the winds of Unreality might at any moment sweep down upon the unsuspecting, leaving behind little that was recognizably human, Jordan could only hope for a very short run in the role of prince and a quick escape from the kingdom with the fortune promised him for a successful job.
But fate--or perhaps a magical conspiracy--was about to rewrite the script for everyone at Castle Midnight, and only time would tell who would live to claim the throne and who would rule among the legions of the dead...
Down Among the Dead Men (1993)
"Ten years have passed since the Demon War. The Forest's scars are slowly healing, the Darkwood is still and silent, and few demons ever venture out of the endless night. But in a clearing not far from the Darkwood boundary, in a darkness where a sun has never risen and a moon has never shone, an ancient evil stirs in its sleep and dreams foul dreams."
And with those words, New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green begins the third of his Forest Kingdom novels, a classic sword-and-sorcery quest of four Rangers, three outlaws, and one Infernal Device that could reawaken a Beast that's best left sleeping. Travel along with Duncan MacNeil, the witch Constance, Jessica Flint and Giles Dancer as they -- and their buried secrets -- go down among the dead men on the adventure of a lifetime.

One Bed Trope
Rupert watched the flames dance behind the fireplace grate. His body ached with tiredness, but his mind was alive with thought. Julia's head was resting on his chest, and her hair stuck to his bare skin. How long he had waited for this. Now Julia was finally his, he was sure of it for the first time since bringing her to the Forest Kingdom.
Gently running his hand over Julia's smooth skin, he felt a sort of electric tingling. He wanted more than anything to wake her and repeat the act that had landed them in the same bed, but he knew it would be best to let her sleep, they had to leave the castle before dawn if his plan was going to work. It was a frightening notion, to leave the lands he had grown in, in order to follow a quest for love. Staying at the castle wasn't an option, Harold would never let him marry Julia, even if Julia had chosen him. Rupert grinned as he realized that he no longer qualified to ride a unicorn. He'd have to "borrow" two horses from the royal stables.
The warmth from the fire filled the room and Julia's body acted as a furnace under the wool blankets. It felt good to be warm, he had been so cold for so long. He welcomed the sweat that collected between his and Julia's bodies. He lay in the orangey glow, his arm wrapped around Julia's shoulder and let his mind drift, able to relax for the first time in months. The war was over, and he was not concerned about Harold, he could be easily dealt with.
It was a little more than an hour before sunrise when Julia began to stir. Sleepily, she lifted her head from his chest, where she had left a small pile of drool- Rupert didn't mind, he found it endearing- and gave him a smile.
"You're still here," her voice was dreamy.
"I couldn't have gone anywhere else, you're laying on top of me." Rupert smiled back at her.
"You were just gone for so long, I thought you were dead."
"I won't be gone anymore. I promise I will stay by your side."
"Promise?"
Rupert let out a light laugh. Of course he meant it, he'd never meant anything more. "I promise."

awww, don't be like that~ wasn't christ's whole thing forgiveness or something like that? and didn't we just finish touching on the whole dante/x/christ thing? :3
/WHEEZES
[ayin voice] okay but to be fair i didn't exactly sign up to be a christ figure so i think i'm allowed a little bit of petty spite at my least favorite problem children for repeatedly murdering my employees in unpleasantly creative ways. tiny bit. we all have our vices, and mine come from ten thousand years sitting at a computer like the world's most manic depressive twitch streamer playing nightmare zoo tycoon from hell.
listen you have to stop sending me these types of questions my fanfic writing ass is gonna keep on answering them in character and i'm not sure that's what people are here for

Omg, this book reads like My Immortal, if My Immortal had been based off Philip Marlowe instead of HP.

Headcanon:
Night Vale and The Nightside take place in the same universe (multiverse?) and are connected by their mysterious, revelation-giving subway system despite technically being on different continents. (Such facts are trivial to the powers that be.)

I have never played a single dragon age game
Actually I played about 30 minutes of Origins before getting bored but that is neither here nor there
But everytime I browse AO3 I usually end up scrolling past DA fics tagged "Hawke/Isabela"
and everytime I do I'm reminded of Hawke and Isobel from Simon R. Green's Haven books. These books were some of my absolute favorites when I was growing up and I still look back on them fondly
I need to go back and reread that whole series but again neither here nor there
and i'm always like "holy shit is that Guards of Haven fanfiction?"
and then it never is and i'm always disappointed.

Also tag any lines you quote from books! My family uses "Deathstalker luck, always bad" from Simon R. Green's Deathstalker Saga and "thrice cursed son of a Salset goat" from Jennifer Roberson's Tiger & Del books.
i love hearing what lines from film/tv people quote with their family all the time because they’re always niche and forgettable to everyone but that specific family
