Missing US tourist found dead on Corfu
A missing US tourist has been found dead on the beach of a small Greek island west of Corfu, Greek media reported.
The man’s body was found on Sunday on a rocky, rather remote beach on the island of Mathraki by another tourist. On Thursday, the American man’s disappearance was reported by his friend. The tourist was last seen on Tuesday at a cafe in the company of two women who have since left the island. No further information about the missing man, including his name and hometown, has been released.
Mathraki, which has a population of 100, is a heavily forested island of 3.9 square kilometres (1.2 square miles) west of the better-known island of Corfu.
Several people have already been found dead in Greece recently. Some of them were hiking in very hot weather.
A 74-year-old Dutch hiker was found on Saturday lying face down in a ravine about 300 metres from where he was last seen. Dr. Michael Mosley, a well-known British TV presenter and writer, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Symi. Experts concluded that he had died the previous Wednesday, shortly after he had been hiking through the rugged rocky terrain.
On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively secluded island in the Aegean Sea with fewer than 400 permanent residents. The two women, aged 64 and 73, left their hotels to meet up and disappeared along the way.
On the island of Amorgos, authorities are still searching for a 59-year-old US tourist who went missing on Tuesday when he went on a solo hike in very hot weather. US media identified the missing hiker as retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Albert Calibete of Hermosa Beach, California.

Why Grave Robbers Missed This Ancient, Gold-Filled Burial
Grave robbers had about 1,800 years to steal the precious gold jewelry buried with a noblewoman on the Greek island of Sikinos. So, what allowed the noblewoman — named Νεικώ (Neko), according to a Greek inscription on her grave — to rest in peace for so long?
She had an exceptionally well-hidden grave, which Greek archaeologists just recently discovered, archaeologists said.
Grave robbers hit other ancient burials on Sikinos, which is part of the Cyclades island group. But they missed Neko's grave because it's concealed in a blind spot between two walls in the basement of a Byzantine church and a monastery, Demetrios Athanasoulis, director of the antiquities department (or ephorate) for the Cyclades, told Reuters.
But Neko wasn't always buried in a monastery. When she died 1,800 years ago, she was buried next to a Roman burial monument. Her grave was filled with lavish treasures, including golden wristbands, rings, and a long, golden necklace, as well as a carved female figure, glass and metal vases and clothing, Reuters reported.
