Sirius has always had to hold hands with somebody when he's emotional.

Remus has always been the one he can rely on for that.

The first time they hold hands, they're starting their second year. They go into the Great Hall, and Sirius sits next to Remus at Gryffindor table. That's when he realizes that this is Regulus' first year at Hogwarts. Regulus is getting sorted tonight.

Sirius is strangely scared—he doesn't want Regulus to have to face any more abuse at home than he already does by being sorted into Gryffindor, but he also doesn't want to be alone in Gryffindor and for Regulus to have to dwell in the same common room as Barty Crouch Jr.

It's an odd feeling.

As Professor McGonagall calls out names for the children to get sorted, Sirius reverts his eyes. He can't look. Suddenly he hears Minerva's shrill voice ring out, "Lyra Black?"

The first thing Sirius' attention is drawn to is Regulus' deadname. Of course, no one knows except him and Andromeda, but he can't help how his blood boils. McGonagall's eyes widen when Regulus, who's cut his hair short (when did that happen?) and looks like himself now—not just a boy, but himself—steps up to the stool. Sirius reaches over to Remus, immediately intertwining his fingers with his, gripping his hand tight. Remus looks over from his conversation with James. "You alright mate?" he asks, and Sirius swallows, shaking his head. "Regulus," he mumbles, nodding his head to the front of the Great Hall.

The hat takes a moment to ponder, before calling out. "Slytherin!" Sirius freezes, not knowing whether to sigh out of relief or cry.

He makes eye contact with Regulus as he makes his way to Slytherin table, watching him sit down next to Andromeda. And then he chooses to sigh. It's better like this—not wanting Reggie to be in Slytherin just so I'm not alone in Gryffindor would be selfish, he thinks.

And that's that. Sirius finds out that Regulus cut his hair on the train so mum and dad wouldn't find out and then they move on.

Sirius and Remus hold hands on multiple occasions throughout their next years at Hogwarts, but Sirius' intentions with it change when they reach fifth year.

Sirius can now successfully transform into a dog, as well as James into a stag and Peter into a rat, and... Well, Remus has always been a werewolf. For as long as Sirius has known him.

Remus explains that the full moon is soon and he'll be extra tired, like always. Peter nods, and so does James. This is routine now—they can tell when Remus is close to transforming just based on behavior.

"We're animagi now, so we can accompany you," Sirius says, taking his hand. "We... Thought it would help."

And for the first time, Sirius feels a spark when Remus' hand touches his. "... What?" Remus croaks out, and Sirius finds it adorable. He swallows. "Um.. We can go with you, when you transform," Peter explains. Remus doesn't take his eyes off Sirius. "Are you sure?" He mumbles, and Sirius notices how beautiful his lips are when he talks for the first time.

It's not often that the marauders have these super personal talks, even with Remus' condition. It's always casual. But still, it's not uncomfortable or anything. "Absolutely," Sirius says, tightening his grip on Remus' hand. He wonders if his cheeks have gone pink—Remus' have, that's for sure. James smirks softly, noticing, while Peter sits there, oblivious.

Sirius is pretty sure his "feelings" for that Hufflepuff girl were just an excuse now.

Remus and Sirius have held hands since they were twelve jsyk, it just didn’t have romantic undertones until they were older

regulus has finally made up with sirius, after he got back from destroying the locket

he finished school and shares an apartment with james, where the marauders regularly come visit

when suddenly, as he's laying on james' chest, making fun of sirius and remus, the lamp in the corner starts to look a bit weird

he starts violently coughing, and in a flash, he's 19 again, flailing his arms in the water and gasping for air

as the hands of tortured souls pull him underwater and the light grows dimmer, all he can think is "was it all a dream?"
