Anon, you're asking me this at a time when I'm working on a Music Inspired By The Nibelungensage That Is Not By Wagner post in my drafts... I must admit, I just love the coincidence/fate/however you wanna call it of it all. :D

That said, talking about songs that aren't about Kriemhild but remind me of her:

Song Of The Storm by Émilie Simon. Quintessential Vindictive Mythological/Legendary Lady Song, if you ask me, but something in Émilie's voice makes me think especially of Kriemhild... somehow, she sounds to me both so young and like she has years of pent-up bitterness and hatred she's barely holding onto before she can finally let them loose at just the right time, which is a vibe I think goes well with her character even after her second wedding -- you could imagine her perpetually stuck in the moment when she realized she had lost Siegfried forever, and why. Also, I absolutely adore the line "I hope you're satisfied/To see the wind blow over me," which she could easily think about Hagen, or Gunther, or Brunhild, or Gernot and Giselher and whoever else in the court of Worms she might suspect to have been in the know of what would happen during the hunt yet told her nothing.

Tu vas le payer from the La légende du Roi Arthur musical. (Showcase version picked here exclusively because I find it so much fun.) In context, sung by Morgan as she plots the fall of Camelot and of her half-brother, Arthur. In my deranged internal ramblings, wonderfully easy to associate with Kriemhild refusing her family's attempts to make amends after Siegfried's death ("I had never stopped believing in you/But tonight your words are really not ringing true") and deciding in her heart that no, she can never never forget, and no, she will never forgive ("You can beg/Deny all/Your hands are tied/You are going to reap/What you have sown"). It could even go well with her accepting Etzel's marriage proposal because she understands what she could do with his army. I like that there's also a softness to it, made up of sadness and doubt, in between all the anger ("Heal me of you/Heal me of my pain/Heal me of your words") that could even be made into a try at convincing herself that "if they would just hand Hagen over to me, I could let them live" ("When I balanced between love and hate/Ready to restart everything from zero"). Also, I like that it's as close as I'll probably ever get to listening to an European rock opera type musical about the Nibelungenlied that's actually available to watch online and with subs, too, lol.

Forever Yours by Nightwish. I don't really think I need to explain this choice, it should be enough to listen to the lyrics. A calmer, quieter, utterly melancholy piece for a moment of solitary mourning in between all the scheming and death. "My time is yet to come/So I'll be forever yours"... besides the obvious association, it reminds me of a line said by Etzel after Kriemhild's death in Lang's Kriemhilds Rache, which I unfortunately don't remember by heart but I think sounded something like "She was never my wife. She was only ever Siegfried's."

... and I thiiiink that's everything, at least as of right now.

But as a little bonus, here's also a song that reminds me of Sigurd and Gudrun/Siegfried and Gutrune: Herr Olof by Garmarna, based on a Medieval Swedish Ballad involving a man, a siren, and an apparently harmless drink.

So this is the new my room mechanic for this year's White Day event: putting a servant together with either version of Ritsuka Fujimaru.

I tried seeing if there was option for two servants, but couldn't find it. Hence the Bryn.

Fun part's the new ability to change expressions on the servants - been awhile since I've seen some of those expressions.

And just like with the 15 Bespeckled Servants event, the background will change over time.

Just think of this as one month of spending time with your favorite. Or more.

Fanon OTP(s)

My favourite fanon ships are Hagen x Volker and Hagen x Gunther – which I prefer changes every now and then.

Hagen x Volker:

These two share such an intimate bond as brothers in arms: they always support each other and their declarations of friendship and love are some of the sweetest moments in the Nibelungenlied. Hagen getting mad with rage after Volker is killed by Hildebrand is the tragic cherry on top.

Another main reason why I like them lies in a major theme of the second Nibelungenlied part: the portrayal of heroic exorbitance. There is a value shift in the text after the Burgundians cross the Danube: Starting from Hagen the Burgundians increasingly orientate their behaviour towards a warrior ethos, according to which the one way to increase one’s honor is to not shy away from a fight – to rush towards the opponent instead – and to inflict as much damage as possible to the opposing side (= kill as many enemies as possible). To accept their doom, to provoke fate, becomes the new agenda of the Burgundians. This is a really toxic mindset from a modern perspective (probably already from a medieval one), but it’s really fascinating to me and a very big and dark appeal of the Nibelungenlied, I haven’t mentioned yet.

And the pair of Hagen and Volker exemplifies this aspect of the Nibelungenlied in a big way in my eyes. They encourage traits of exorbitant heroism within the other by supporting each other in their aggressive behavior: Hagen rushing to Volker’s aid after the latter murdered one of the huns during the tournament, Volker aiding Hagen when he makes a widow cry by presenting her the sword of her death husband. Also, Volker is just like Hagen a master in the art of provocation, which makes him further the perfect match for mister ‘Yeah, I killed your husband, watcha gonna do about it, hm?’.

I also like the fanon interpretation of Volker being a more free-spirited person, who likes to enjoy life (and maybe to also flirt xD) due to him being a musician – maybe even with a somewhat sensitive, artistic side? Which is a great contrast to Hagen, who I like to imagine to be more occupied with his duties and therefore more stuck up and less likely to just relax once and a while.

Hagen x Gunther:

Their power dynamic is just so interesting to me. Normally, it is assumed that the king is the one with the clearly greater power and decision-making authority. But this dynamic often seems to be turned on its head with the two of them. Hagen is often the one who makes decisions independently and convinces Gunther of them or simply enforces them over Gunther's head (in the second part of the Nibelungenlied). However, Hagen does not seem to do this to disempower Gunther, but on the contrary to promote his interests and strengthen his position as king. Nor does Gunther seem to be bothered by the fact that Hagen has this great decision-making power as a vassal. On the contrary, he seems to be used to it and even consciously wants it – at least that is one possible conclusion that can be drawn from the stanza 119 of the Nibelungenlied:

Hagen actually acts appropriately when, as a vassal, he does not interfere in the dialogue between two king’s sons (Gunther and Siegfried) – but this is exactly the kind of interference Gunther wants and expects from him here. Which, I think, says a lot about their everyday dynamics.

There are also tensions and differences of opinion between the two in the Nibelungenlied (there are one or two scenes, where they do seem to get a bit rude towards each other), but despite these differences they stick together. I kinda really like the scene of Gunther defending Hagen at the Cruentation – despite it being only one line (probably because of the mental image I have of that scene). And of course, further moments demonstrating their bond are the scenes of Gunther and his brothers not handing over Hagen to Kriemhild and Hagen not revealing the hiding place of the hoard to Kriemhild.

Hagen's backstory, that he spent his childhood and youth as a hostage at Etzel’s court in Gunther’s place, also adds an interesting aspect to their dynamic. And the Waltharius can provide further material for additional angst between the two.

Hagen x Walther:

I also like Hagen x Walther for being childhood friends and comrades in arms, who share a deep and intimate bond: Hagen almost not being able to leave Walther’s embrace, before fleeing to Worms. Walther lamenting, where their famous harmony went. The sight of Hagen letting Walther forget about his father and not caring much about his home.

Them spending their childhood and youth as hostages in a faraway land as well as the events of the Waltharius itself leave plenty of room for angst and complicated feelings between these two. Their friendship surviving and these two laughing together, despite mutilating each other mere moments ago, is a bitter sweet ending in the Waltharius.

Question because I see this happen all the time, but if the canon basically has to show that feelings are reciprocated, that means that popular fan pairings like Waver/Rider aren't allowed, correct? Since in Rider's FGO materials it basically confirms he doesn't have reciprocated feelings towards Waver & Adventures also kind of shows him not really entirely having one-sided feelings anymore either rather than just it being a person who impacted his life. I feel like I gotta ask because as a fan of both of those characters it drives me crazy when I see people cite mistranslations and misconstrued author jokes as "canon evidence" and then ignore literally everything else that's translated that shows otherwise, plus I think it wouldn't be fair to include them if that's the guidelines we're going along if it has to be Romantic

Admittedly, there’s been a couple of entries like that in the previous tournament. To call Waver x Rider a true pairing like some actual couples would be foolish of me because, as previously mentioned by you, their actual relationship isn’t on the same level as those other pairings. However, I argue that Waver x Rider, and most of those other pairings I mentioned previously, fall under the leeway I briefly mentioned in the qualifications.

While it’s true that Rider may not feel any sort of romantic connection to Waver, it’d be wrong to say that the relationship had no impact on Waver since it’s shown that, since meeting him, Waver apparently has that man on his mind all the way to adulthood. Yes, it’s probably true that Rider has no romantic interest in Waver outside of enjoying his company and trusting him closely (that and the undeniable fact that any actual relationship between them would be/is one-sided), it’s also not wrong to look at the impact their relationship had on the trajectory of Waver’s life as a form of romance.

I know the rules were written out in a romantic love point of view sort of way (hell, it was the romance aspect of couples that got me to make this tournament in the first place), but there’s a lot more to couples and romance than just whether or not two people kissed. Maybe it’s about someone managing to change your entire life and worldview, maybe it’s showing you that there’s more to life than you thought, maybe it really is just as simple as wanting to see two people be together. I couldn’t tell you what exactly qualifies under the aspect of “romance”, but if there’s one thing I picked up from Fate/Grand Order, it’s that romance can be found in many ways, shape, and forms, that sometimes even the simplest thing can be, in its own way, romantic.

While it’s true pairs like Waver x Rider don’t hold the same weight as other pairs like Siegfried x Kriemhild or Sigurd x Brynhild and that realistically this tournament wasn’t made with pairings like them in mind, under the rules and leeway I give on what’s considered “romantic” and a “pair”, I choose to believe that Waver x Rider can be just as viable an option as the other two specified pairings, even if their relationship is different than the other competitors.

Of course, since this is still my tournament, I have final say on whether or not a pairing makes it in, if I truly don’t believe a pairing qualifies then I simply wouldn’t include them (provided I actually have room to be picky). But I’m also lenient enough to be convinced easily, so…

this is a good question!!! honestly in terms of reading it i would suggest the penguin classics translation by a. t. hatto— this is the most widely available one to buy and has a very readable prose style. theres also the older more fancy margaret armour translation that you can find for free online which is also pretty good.

then i would say watch fritz lang’s silent film adaptation!!!! it’s two films, die nibelungen: siegfried, and die nibelungen: kriemhild. they’re available for free on youtube!!!! and it helps that they are some of the greatest silent films of all time lol.

Well they are pretty canon! So it does make a lot of sense!

In terms of compelling, it's been a bit more of a climb but that's more so because I've just found myself enjoying more and more of them. The Kriemhild sprite from the most recent event and her showing off her Siegfried merch.. cute!

I also just like how they parallel SigBryn, who I really love. I hope she gets a summer form that matches Siegfried's summer look to continue this trend

Top guilty pleasure ship of mine would be Kriemhild x Hagen:

I did cringe as a teenager at Hagen being in love with Kriemhild when reading Wolfgang Hohlbein’s novel ‘Hagen von Tronje’. But I could enjoy an interpretation of these two having a very fucked up hate-obsession-and-erotic-fixation-in-one-thing going on. With these two being united by a mutual passion for revenge, in which they seek to triumph over the other in order to compensate for endured humiliations (Kriemhild feeling humiliated by Hagen for betraying her, killing Siegfried and stealing her gold; Hagen feeling humiliated by Kriemhild because she managed to exert so much influence over him and his kings that he was forced to go to Hungary against his will and because she holds dangerous power over him and his kings as the queen of the huns).

I also could enjoy the idea of Kriemhild having a crush on Hagen when she was younger, because she saw him as the big protector of her brothers. Making his betrayal even worse for her. Hagen being in love with Kriemhild can work for me in an adaptation or fanfic, if his love turns to jealousy and hatred after she marries Siegfried and after she publicly humiliates the honor of his queen, and therefore also of his king – giving him an additional personal motive for murdering the dragon slayer and being so cruel towards Kriemhild.

Messed up bonus points for the scenario of them both being in love with each other, but Hagen hiding his feelings, because he would not be an appropriate partner for a king’s sister as a vassal. Maybe even Kriemhild hiding her feelings as well, because she fears Hagen would die if he became her husband (but both of them hiding their feelings would probably be more of a comedy xD). Rest of the Nibelungenlied unfolds as usual, but their hatred has the weird ‘I’m still attracted to you / still long for you’ aspect.
