I assume at some point during the making of TotK some executive was like "we need to give Sidon a fiance"

and the dev team were like "fine adds scene of Sidon going down on one knee to give Link a sacred vow and ring" And then the executive was like "No! a woman, not Link! Also she can't be evil!"

And the dev team were like "it's just how Sidon gives Link his vow as sage, he's just so tall he has to get down on one knee! And also we've totally given a Sidon a fiance, she's the caretaker to the domain and stuff."

And when the executive leaves the dev team are like, "how do we convince people that Yona isn't evil?" and someones goes, "I know, she can ship Link and Sidon and insist that they spend time alone together!" "Perfect."

And then the executive adds "move Mipha's statue because this sequel needs to be work as a stand alone more than as a sequel."

And then the dev team were like "Fine, but what should we replace it with?" "A statue of Link ridding Sidon?" "Also Sidon should be depressed until he gets to spend alone time with Link and everyone should comment about how they're the very best of friends, right?"

Sidlink BOTW AU where Sidon WANTS to fancy Link, but thinks Link will only like a Hylian, so Sidon tries to act Hylian around Link... except Sidon doesn't know much about Hylians.

Sidon just squatting and trying to act shorter around Link. Attempting to hide his sharp toothy grin and stop his tail from wagging. He's starting fires when trying to cook Hylian meals. Sidon putting on pants... incorrectly. It's really weird. Everyone in the domain is thinking the Prince is having a midlife crisis.

Sidon IS having a crisis, but it's a gay panic one.

But unbeknownst to Sidon, Link has fallen for these Zora quips. The smile Sidon flashes makes Link lose his train of thought... the way Sidon's tail wags makes Link flustered. When Sidon shook Link's hand with his two smothering strong ones, Link felt dizzy. Link is missing these quirks Sidon would show, so Link is determined to see them again!

When Link and Sidon are alone in Zora's Domain, Link purposely tells a funny story to the Prince. One he KNOWS will get him to laugh. But when Sidon turns his face from Link to "keep cool", Link gets frustrated. He grabs onto the fishy prince's face, asking him WHY Sidon is acting so differently. Sidon tries to deflect such a notion, but Link calls Sidon out on all the weird things he's been noticing... especially the pants.

Sidon cracks under the gaze of this Hylian! Link not only sees right through Sidon's changes, but Link seems to DISLIKE them, too! Sidon is embarrassed, and he deflates from the realization that Link doesn't like the prince. Sidon refuses to look at Link as he tells Link half the truth, that he wanted to be Link's... FRIEND. That he thought Link wouldn't want to be with... well FRIENDS with... a Zora. Link pauses, as he KNOWS that Sidon knows about he and Mipha's friendship, so something STILL feels off. It isn't until he notices Sidon's blushing that he understands what is truly being said.

After Link makes sure Sidon looks into his eyes, Link reassures Sidon that the things he likes about Sidon are what are truly him. His heroic grin, his playful tail wags. His champion-like swimming abilities. That Link enjoys Sidon. That he wants to SEE Sidon... all of him. Quickly, though, after Sidon lets out a flustered wheeze, Link realizes how his words came across, stating he just meant for Sidon to take off the pants! Sidon wheezes louder. Link gets more embarrassed and tries to explain he just meant Zora don't wear pants, so he'd want to see Sidon without-

It's great. They're great. They're trying.

It takes a bit more time after this convo, cause clearly the two are terrible with communication, but they reveal their romantic interests.

And they burn that infamous pair of pants.

How much of Link/Sidon is just people simping for the shark man and using Link as a self insert for that, and how much does it actually feel like a genuinely well set-up potential romantic pairing? Never had the time to play botw or totk (swamped with schoolwork) so this has always intrigued me.

Asking because you occur as the tumblr user with the most based opinions on these sorts of matters.

On one hand, in general, link as a silent protagonist doesn't have the easiest time developing a rapport with NPCs enough that I could confidently say any of them are "well set up romantic pairings". the vast majority of his characterization outside of how you the player interpret him comes from the memories feature in botw, which is understandably very focused on his relationship to Zelda rather than NPCs he has yet to meet. However. With that said. There's yaoi there for real. Sidon is immediately so obsessed with link he's like omg bestieeee hiiii ^_^ like that shark dude loves him

In totk u go to the zora domain and Sidon has had a statue of link riding on his back put like front and center in the city. Sidon has a fiance in totk but this does nothing to dissuade me because imo Sidon is the kind of guy who doesn't think it's cheating to kiss the homies and I think his fiance seems based enough to agree. He and link are both busy guys so do I see a committed relationship working? Probably not. But does he drop in to lanayru every now and then to swing? Absolutely. I believe this.

Excerpt: The Hands That Wield the Sword

This must be a fucking test. The rain, the moblins and bokoblins, and the fucking octoroks He can’t even climb the walls surrounding the river with the rain. It’s been hours of dredging on the path. ���The path is straight, there’s just a few monsters, oh you’re so handsome and strong!” he mouthed moving his arms up and down in an imitation of Sidon (Link might’ve added that “handsome.”) Of course the path would be straight and easy if you were a giant red predator with the mouth full of shark teeth and a four-foot stride. Even the stupidest lizalfos would take a single look at him and run. He’s a Zora! They swim! He wouldn’t need to walk on the trail, he can just swim! Link walks onto the rock crossing bow at the ready and hears a splash below him immediately letting the arrow fly before he could be hit by anything else.

“You stay quite vigilant, my friend!” speak of the devil and the giant red shark man will appear. Link was too bogged down by the rain and the lingering scent of lizalfos blood on him, but he leaned over the edge of the bridge to see the Zora. His smile wasn’t blinding this time, but it brings a little warmth to Link’s toes.  

“All the fucking octoroks in this river,” he signs, “Sorry? Didn’t expect you to meet me so soon.”

“I do apologize! I haven’t walked along the path in some time, and the octoroks in the river do not usually bother the Zora.” Theory confirmed. ”If I had known it would prove difficult, I would’ve asked for an additional escort for you!” Sidon smiles and Link decides that the breathy sound coming from his mouth and his gills was a laugh.

“Don’t mind.” Link shrugs and grins devilishly. “I like a challenge.” The next sound the Zora made was something between a choke and a cough and did not sound like a laugh at all.
