(So rushed but enjoy this small Au that popped into my head this morning as I lay bedridden.)
Melody was sixteen when she died in 1954.
Melody worked at her family diner as a waitress. The young girl had met plenty of people ranging from inspiring politicians, veterans, school girls, and rowdy boys. She had learned to read people, know what orders they would like, sweet talk them for a better tip. There was no one she couldn’t read. Until what she assumed was a paper boy came in on a rainy day with a science textbook. Melody mentally prepared herself before walking up to the middle booth with smile.
“Welcome to Melody Diner! I’m Melody! What can I get for you?”
The paper boy pointed on the menu to a root beer, not saying a single word or looking up from the textbook. Melody just smiled, tilted her head before speaking again. Not much of a talker then.
“Anything else?”
The boy shook his head. Okay, that’s fine, Melody can work with that. Minutes later she came back with the root beer and placed it in front of the boy with a grin, still getting nothing in response. Her smile dropped and she walked away to serve other tables. When she finally made a round back the boy was gone, leaving five dollars in his place.
Root beer only costs 25 cents.
Melody giggled as she picked up the money and put it in her pocket. Hopefully paper boy would come back soon.
The boy became a regular.
He always sat in the same booth by the window, a cap covering his face with a new textbook every time. The same thing was ordered and the same amount was placed on the table.
And oh boy Melody was determined to get a word out of him.
“So…you got a name?”
Nothing.
“What are you reading?”
The boy sipped the root beer, still nothing.
“You know that only cost a quarter right? You’ve been giving me tons extra. I mean like a family meal extra.”
Melody swore she saw the boy smirk ever so slightly from the angle she was at. He knew.
“Melody! Kitchen!”
The waitress groaned as she was called back by her father. She waved her goodbye and when she came back there was a quarter on top of the five dollars.
Curse you paper boy.
What caught her eye truly was the ripped paper placed under the empty glass.
You’re really good at making root beers, Melody. -P
Melody blushed and put the note in her nightstand later that night. Soon after that wasn’t the only note in there.
Six months.
It took six months of root beers to get him to talk. Melody had given up at that point, just saving the booth for the unnamed boy that only shared his initial.
Melody sat down with him as she sipped her milkshake on her break. It was a ritual that she had come accustomed to.
She leaned over to read the textbook as well as he flipped through the pages. She had learned quite a bit from reading next to him, the boy seemed to love science and space. Melody grew to love it just as much. There was a small stuttering breath before the silence broke.
“What’s a frogs favorite drink?”
Melody jumped in her seat, not expecting to ever hear the other’s voice. She had her notes and that was enough, or so she thought.
“Croak-a cola.”
Laughter. Full chest, genuine laughter came from the girl next to him as she hit the table a few times.
The boy looked up with a huge grin on his face, and for the first time Melody could see him fully.
Oh
The paper boy wasn’t a boy!
Melody’s face flushed, She had finally cracked the mystery.
Something about her being a girl made her heart flutter even more.
Melody was certain nothing would go wrong that night, she has successfully snuck in her lover into the apartment window.
Lover.
Oh how she loved that word. Melody was always taught that one day a boy would meet her and marry her and they would form the perfect American family. She was never the type for romance but she knew she needed to find a husband with a stable job one day so she could get away from her family. Now? She couldn’t dream of that life with a man
The other girl was more than enough to make her satisfied even if it was wrong. Melody would give up everything for her if she were to be honest. The way the kisses were secret, the pet names barely above a whisper. It was all so perfect.
They played chess on the girls bed as both talked through the night with no intention of stopping or sleeping.
Melody got too confident however.
She just wanted to show the girl a trick she learned with the matches that they gave out at the diner! Really she didn’t mean for the sheets to catch fire and for the door to get jammed! They tried to make it to the window before realizing the fire got too out of control.
This was it.
Melody held onto the girl as they burned together like two stars in the black void of the night.
“I’ll see you in the fabric of the universe.”
The girl whispered to Melody as both of them perished. She felt stuck. Pulled back after there was black and suddenly she was staring at both of their charred bodies as the fire got the rest of the family in the house.
Melody was the only ghost.
Everyone that died in the fire passed on immediately after, leaving her all alone. She roamed Manhattan, pranking the living, sitting at their booth in the diner, made a deal with the devil, and met a ghostbuster.
Melody disappeared soon after the game of chess as she looked the ghostbuster leave with genuine shock and question.
Why did Phoebe Spengler look so much like her own Phoebe she had killed?
