Athletes Go for the Gold with NASA Spinoffs
NASA technology tends to find its way into the sporting world more often than you’d expect. Fitness is important to the space program because astronauts must undergo the extreme g-forces of getting into space and endure the long-term effects of weightlessness on the human body. The agency’s engineering expertise also means that items like shoes and swimsuits can be improved with NASA know-how.
As the 2024 Olympics are in full swing in Paris, here are some of the many NASA-derived technologies that have helped competitive athletes train for the games and made sure they’re properly equipped to win.
The LZR Racer reduces skin friction drag by covering more skin than traditional swimsuits. Multiple pieces of the water-resistant and extremely lightweight LZR Pulse fabric connect at ultrasonically welded seams and incorporate extremely low-profile zippers to keep viscous drag to a minimum.
Swimsuits That Don’t Drag
When the swimsuit manufacturer Speedo wanted its LZR Racer suit to have as little drag as possible, the company turned to the experts at Langley Research Center to test its materials and design. The end result was that the new suit reduced drag by 24 percent compared to the prior generation of Speedo racing suit and broke 13 world records in 2008. While the original LZR Racer is no longer used in competition due to the advantage it gave wearers, its legacy lives on in derivatives still produced to this day.
Trilion Quality Systems worked with NASA’s Glenn Research Center to adapt existing stereo photogrammetry software to work with high-speed cameras. Now the company sells the package widely, and it is used to analyze stress and strain in everything from knee implants to running shoes and more.
High-Speed Cameras for High-Speed Shoes
After space shuttle Columbia, investigators needed to see how materials reacted during recreation tests with high-speed cameras, which involved working with industry to create a system that could analyze footage filmed at 30,000 frames per second. Engineers at Adidas used this system to analyze the behavior of Olympic marathoners' feet as they hit the ground and adjusted the design of the company’s high-performance footwear based on these observations.
Martial artist Barry French holds an Impax Body Shield while former European middle-weight kickboxing champion Daryl Tyler delivers an explosive jump side kick; the force of the impact is registered precisely and shown on the display panel of the electronic box French is wearing on his belt.
One-Thousandth-of-an-Inch Punch
In the 1980s, Olympic martial artists needed a way to measure the impact of their strikes to improve training for competition. Impulse Technology reached out to Glenn Research Center to create the Impax sensor, an ultra-thin film sensor which creates a small amount of voltage when struck. The more force applied, the more voltage it generates, enabling a computerized display to show how powerful a punch or kick was.

Weight Training Without the Weight
Astronauts spending long periods of time in space needed a way to maintain muscle mass without the effect of gravity, but lifting free weights doesn’t work when you’re practically weightless. An exercise machine that uses elastic resistance to provide the same benefits as weightlifting went to the space station in the year 2000. That resistance technology was commercialized into the Bowflex Revolution home exercise equipment shortly afterwards.

Celluloid
Celluloid tatting shuttles owned by my great-great grandmother, Ida Mae Lohmar, along with some of the lace she made with them.

Celluloid was the first plastic to really make it into people's everyday lives. It'd made from cellulose which is derived from plant materials, and it was sometimes sold as "vegetable ivory."
Its white color made it easy to dye, and the fact that it could be made from any plant material meant that it was easier to manufacture than plastics made from rubber sap that had to be imported from tropical countries. It wasn't limited to jewelry, decoration, and specific industrial stuff the way gutta percha and vulcanite were.
Celluloid is lightweight and somewhat brittle. It is not as sturdy as bakelite and is somewhat easy to break. Because it was so common, moldable, and easy to dye, it was a pretty common material for jewelry.

Alone
Lena scoured through the supply cabinet, desperate for anything to aid her current predicament. She floated horizontally in the confines of quadrant C-2, a rope around her waist and attached to the hook on the wall. She'd learned the hard way that unless she secured herself, the slow roll of the space station kept disrupting her search, sending her slowly spinning away from where she wanted to be.
It had been a week stranded here with an increasingly dangerous station. Her food supplies were low, and she still couldn't find any useful chemical in which to derive fuel for her thrusters, to hopefully reach the Chinese station once its orbit aligned.
Tremors and fires have slowly eaten its way through the communication sector, and it was only matter of time before it reached the reactor. Then survival would be near impossible.
Lena pushed aside vials and ignored the whisper of grief that haunted her since Jack's death. Part of her feared she would soon join him in death.
And what of Kara Danvers? Her girlfriend, or maybe no longer girlfriend, since their fight burned in the backdrop of Lena's thoughts. She'd signed up for this repair mission to avoid the situation, and now here she was.
All it had taken was one near-miss of a small asteroid, which set off a chain reaction, destroying their shuttle, Quadrant B-1 of the station, and cutting Lena off from the communication sector in Quadrant A-2.
Their fight felt ridiculous now, and she wished more than anything to see Kara again. To not be trapped here alone.
A few days ago, she'd managed to rig a HAM radio. Starting with NASA's frequency, she'd sent the message, "Commander Lena Kieran Luthor requesting aid. I am trapped on the space station in a decaying orbit." There'd been no response. Her next try started in the amateur radio bands. She tried for the eighty meters band, a higher frequency one, in hopes it would nab a contact. A lot of amateur's reported preferring this band, but she couldn't be certain how far it'd propagate, especially if there was ionization in the atmosphere to muck the signal. Again she repeated her message and again had no response.
Next she tried the forty meters high frequency band. She closed her eyes, one hand pressed against the side of her headphones, and listened first.
Someone was speaking on this band, but she didn't recognize the language. She decided to attempt anyway and repeated her message in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The most likely languages for anyone listening in ITU region two.
The response had been excitement and a slew of words she still couldn't understand.
"I'm sorry," she said, frustrated, "I don't know your language. Please, if you understand me, can you alert someone I need rescuing? I'm trapped on a decaying orbit on the US and European Consortium Space Station D."
The reply baffled her as the person had switched to a different language. One that sounded similar to Spanish, but she still couldn't make out most of the words. She'd given up at that point.
So who knew if that person understood her and relayed the message. Most bands got her no other interactions, but she'd broadcasted on them just in case.
She kept the HAM radio running, but to no avail.
With her supplies dwindling, she scavenged what she could in her space suit from the ruined quadrants. Most of it was sheets of metal she welded to block off ruined sectors and to fix the air leakage.
Other materials helped her construct her radio, and still others gave her a way to rebuild suit thrusters. Her suit sat only a few feet away, clipped to the wall, and the pack on its back had started to look like some sort of Frankenstein monstrosity.
If her calculations were correct, the space station had dropped in its orbit. The closer it came to earth, the more likely she'd burn up with it as it crashed down.
Also per her calculations, the Chinese space station hung in a slightly higher orbit and would soon pass close enough for her to bridge the gap. Whether anyone still lived on it, she had no idea. But it likely had salvageable escape pods.
If she could find enough fuel for her suit's thrusters.
She wiped away sweat from the increasingly warm quarters. The cabinet held an assortment of chemicals. Most useless for her needs, but near the back, she found formic acid.
"Yes," she grinned, "finally!"
One of the few facilities still functioning on this dying station was the chemical equipment, and it should stock some platinum. Exposure to platinum breaks formic acid into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It's the hydrogen she needs for fuel.
Lena tucked the acid into a protective pouch in her suit. She unhooked herself, slid into her suit, and tied her helmet to her belt.
With a push, she floated through the corridor. She increased her momentum with a gentle push off various protrusions, some of them made specifically for traversal, but others broken pipes or an analyzer station. Most of the computers in the station failed to work, the power grid close to failing with two solar wings lost to the chain reaction.
She had only one solar panel wing left and a prototype reactor, but how long would that last? The reactor already showed signs of failure and radiation leakage.
An intersection loomed ahead, and she shifted her angle to take a tight turn to the right. A tremor shook the station, and another warning light glared red along the corridor. She was far too close to the damaged sections, but she had no other choice.
She needed to break down the formic acid, otherwise she'd never make the leap to the Chinese station.
The corridor opened into a large module, where half a dozen chemistry stations hugged the walls. The cold atom lab control panel was still functional, but although useful for crafting Bose-Einstein condensates for gyroscopes, it was useless for her current task. Next to it sat a larger set-up, specifically for breaking down materials.
She slid off her suit gloves, clipped them to her belt, and flipped open its lid. She set the acid in the middle, clamped it in place, and fit the tubes. Shutting the lid, she slid her hands into the enclosure's gloves.
Another tremor shook the station, but Lena ignored the increasingly loud warning alerts. Each movement calculated and careful, she extracted the hydrogen she needed and filled the empty fuel cell.
An explosion rocked the station further down the corridor, and a safety door slammed down at the end of the hallway.
"Shit." Lena slid her hands free and extracted the fuel cell. She had less time than she thought.
It took two minutes to install the cell and re-don her gloves and helmet.
Three minutes to push her momentum toward the nearest airlock. Fire bloomed behind her, and smoke filled corridor. Another safety door attempted to drop, but it stuck halfway due to a set of broken pipes.
The next explosion knocked her hard against the wall. Pain blossomed in her side.
"Fuck!" A pipe had cut into her side. She dug into her belt supplies and slapped on a patch to seal the leak. Nothing she could do for her injury. Not until she got off this drowning ship.
The airlock C-4 loomed at the end of the corridor. A jet of flame from a nearby module set off the safety door.
Which would cut her off from freedom. Fuck. She pushed with all her might, her momentum increasingly dangerously. The door shuddered and slid slowly, its mechanics damaged.
She soared under it as it snapped shut with only inches to spare. Smoke filled this module, but she dodged the fires and hit the airlock's controls far too hard. It knocked the breath out of her.
Her vision splintered and the pain in her side burned.
The electronic controls failed to respond to her codes. So she grabbed the crank and turned with all her strength. More alerts blared and a red light flashed above her. Another tug and the crank clicked it open.
Air rushed into the chamber. She pushed inside and tried to shut the door, but it stuck against a shattered pipe. Fire licked the air and another shudder threw her against the wall.
Nothing for it. She'd have to risk it all.
She cranked the outer door until it flung open. Air screamed into the void. The earth glared up at her, far too close, and the beautiful sight of its blue, green, and yellow incited a desperation.
Lena wanted to go home. She wanted to stand on the ground again. To drink of the water, to sift through the soil.
And more than anything else, she wanted to find Kara.
To apologize for their fight. To not run again, but repair what they had once.
Tears blurred her vision as she pushed away from the broken station. More explosions shattered yet more of it, and a piece tore away to hurtle toward the earth.
She hit the thrusters and flew toward the trajectory of the Chinese station. Below her, the fires and debris of broken modules ripped into other quadrants, the station's own parts shredding its other sections. The chain reaction sent several spiraling in other orbits, some far too close to her own.
Still she sailed upward, toward her one chance at survival.
Ahead of her, the Chinese station loomed with its six modules, four solar panel wings, and hopefully an escape pod. She was so close. So damn close.
Several debris hurtled past the Chinese station, one ricocheting off a solar panel wing, tearing half of it away. The momentum sent both hurtling into a lower orbit.
Lena dodged the debris, but the finer particulate matter rained onto her suit. Her armor began to degrade, the finer particles ripped into each layer. Her thrusters sputtered.
Her momentum was too fast. She'd bounce right off the damn station if she didn't slow down.
"Puncture in left leg," her suit's systems alerted her. A hiss of air roared in her ears. The oxygen began to drop.
Fear curdled through her. She had no time to seal the break.
"Come on," she whispered. She adjusted her thrusters and attempted to slow her momentum. The station's outer armor held numerous protrusions, but her first attempt had her bouncing off and away.
She hit the thrusters to stop her tumble. Gritting her teeth, she aimed for a ladder and readied her rope hook.
She hit hard, but the hook slipped into space and she tumbled to stop. Her oxygen dropped lower, and she began to feel lightheaded. She pulled herself along the rope. Her glove gripped the rung. Black edged on her periphery of her vision. She pulled herself forward, closer to an airlock.
She flipped on her radio. Her vision faded toward grey. Low oxygen alert beeped. "Commander Lena Kieran Luthor requesting entrance." She struggled to speak it in Chinese, but her thoughts tumbled toward oblivion, her grip on reality slipping.
Her hand touched the crank, but her strength waned. She couldn't turn it. She gasped, the oxygen dropping dangerously. Her vision greyed, her mind blanked, and she struggled to take a breath, to suck in oxygen.
In that moment, she wanted only Kara. Just to see her again before the end.
Darkness overcame her just as a voice popped up in her radio.
"Commander?"

Lena slowly regained awareness. An oxygen mask hugged her face, and she lay, strapped to a bed. Voices spoke a language she knew, but couldn't seem to recall. Her head ached.
A person floated closer. "Lena?"
She blinked and noted the clear blue eyes. Golden hair falls in soft curls around her face. "Kara?" she whispered.
"Yeah, yeah, it's me." Tears stung Kara's eyes. She pressed a hand to Lena's left cheek. "Gosh, Lena, I thought you died."
Lena managed a faint smile. "Too stubborn." Tears blurred her vision The room she's in didn't look like anything from a station. She weakly removed the oxygen mask. "Where am I?"
"Hospital. You're on Earth." Kara settled onto a stool next to her and grasped her hand. "I'm so glad you're alive."
Lena reached up to gently touch Kara's cheek. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I've missed you."
Kara leaned into her touch and smiled. "I'm sorry too. Let's focus on your recovery, then we can go home together."
Lena smiled, relief and hope flooding her sore and pain-filled body. "I'd like that."

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Well, because that's the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads.
Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that's the gauge they used.
So, why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing.
Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break more often on some of the old, long distance roads in England . You see, that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.
And what about the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match or run the risk of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot.
Bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with this?', you may be exactly right.
Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.) Now, the twist to the story:
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.
So, a major Space Shuttle design feature, of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control almost everything.

Transformers New Generation: Megatron
TELETRAN-1 Decepticon Database: D-16/Megatron
Miner Turned Gladiator
Brought online within the city state of Kaon as a “manual” sent to work on the dangerous asteroid-mining city of Tarn, an operation remote enough that oversight by the Autobot Council was near impossible, and conditions long ago deteriorating under the corrupt Kaon rulers, their work force not even given names due to the high, and expected, death rate. It was here among these shafts of ore and precious metals where the bot who would become Megatron, then named D-16, journey would began.
D-16 on the surface appeared to be just another simple “manual” but beneath his metal shall surged the circuits of a great mind, one constantly philosophizing about both his, and Cybertrons, place in the universe as he drilled whatever surface he as assigned that day. It is speculated that had he been exposed to an environment more suited to this disposition, he would have become one of the greatest minds of the Golden Age. Instead he toiled for cycles, under the cruel watch of the Kaon overseers who met any complaint or act of defiance, with either the blunt instruments in hand or a quick discharge from their blasters. Riots where often discussed but rarely acted upon, and none were of interest to D-16 who restrained himself from these futile acts. Despite this, those around him saw the cold rage surging beneath his optics as other “manuals” where beaten to death or crushed by the rocks they mined, and causally cast into recycling without a care. One day, as another riot erupted that rage inside D-16 did so as well. It would be the most successful riot on Tarn ever witnessed.
Alone he single handedly killed nine armed overseers before being subdued. When Kaon’s rulers saw the footage they, in their decadence, could only think of one think witnessing this tragic event unfold. “He would be perfect for the fighting pits.”
So, the next day they had D-16 moved to his new home back on Cybertron, unaware thry had just made the worse mistake of their lives... The pits were once regarded as a place of honor, established by Megatronus Prime, the founder of Kaon, as a designated arena where his warriors could still test themsleves after the Unification of the Thirteen, their guns silenced by the resulting peace, but over the years it had been corrupted by the Cybertron's Ore barons, who ironically had been gifted control over the city in recompense for the raids perpetuated by the maurauder Trannis, and his Destrons long ago, only to eventually grow into a different kind of bandit themselves, having secretly revived the once sacred practice into a cruel form of entertainment, while claiming to have ended the "obsolete and dangerous tradition."
It was during those early days farrying between Kaon and Tarn that he had a chance encounter with the protàge of Alpha Trion, a young archivist named Orion Pax, when their shuttle suffered a FTL malfunction, causing them to be stranded on a alien world, the two forming an odd friendship, bonding from their similar positions at the bottom rung of their positons, as the cycles past before they successfully worked together to lead the others safely back to Cybertron.
As expected D-16 flourished in the pits, defeating foe after foe, and building a cult of personality among the survivors and even the guards, who helped him gather the knowledge of their homeworld denied him on Tarn.
His mind and body at their peak, he masterminded a revolt with the miners of Tarn, that was so quick in it’s execution, many of Kaon’s elite, where completely unaware of it until their slaves broke into their quarters.Some escaped and tried to retake their city but our maneuvered and without their wealth their efforts where soon crushed. With his victory in hand D-16 took a new name, derived directly from The Great Megatronus.
Megatron was born...
Philosopher Tyrant
Despite what some postulated, his experiance had not filled Megatron with empathy or mercy, the opposite in fact, the cruelty of his masters had inspired him, to Megatron their fault was only they lacked the strength to hold their power, proving him and his warriors the superior mechanoids, that might was what deciding factor in who had the right to rule. His revolution serving as the proof his theses, long conceptualized during his cycles as a miner, that he now, could finally put into practice. No matter what,“Peace through Tyranny” would become the new ideology of the Transformer race.
First he would need to expand his influence. He knew brutal Kaon would quickly adopt whatever belief it’s current ruler decreed, as it had always done, but he knew the rest of the planet would be stubborn in letting go of their selfish liberties, so long as the Autobot Elders and the leading Prime, remained online.
Primus, or perhaps something else, seemed to have been smiling on the Warlord in those days, as while he was formulating a plan for his inevitable planetwide conquest with his lieutenants, the young Autobot archivist he once befriended arrived, seeking to document the events that had lead to Megatron’s uprising, and to relay the concerns of the Council. Using his charisma and their past friendship Megatron convinced Orion, that as leader of his forces, he must speak to the Elders himself, having faith in his old friend the young bot agreed, and his plan to finally end the era of peace had began.
But instead of a plea of unity, Megatron used the opportunity to decry the council for holding back their world from its full potential, and that only he and his followers could see through the deception they had promoted, that Cybertonian life was equal to the rest of the universe, and declared his intent to rise up against this lie, all the while his compatriots sabotaged the halls defenses, inverting the null field, allowig his weapons to come online and disable to High Guards which he promptly used with a rallying cry:
“We are no longer gladiators or miners... We are now the true rulers of Cybertron! We are... Decepticons, FOREVER!!”
But as he aimed his cannon at the most revered Alpha Trion, Orion stood in his way and took the blast intended for his mentor. Grabbing hold of his old friend, now half pulverized, Megatron stood shocked, if he was unnerved by his action it lasted but a moment, as he responded to Orion's pleas to stop his assault with a few simple words.
"I am done saving you."
Allowing Pax to fall from the podium, he continued his rampage seemingly unconcerned that Alpha had eluded him.
His army now had a name, and with this chant echoing through the halls of Kaons pits, nothing could possible stand in the way as they marched towards their destiny. Their arrogance was short lived...
Orion Pax had survived the massacre of the Elders, despite taking a direct blast from Megatrons ion cannon, Orion's spark continued to burn allowing his mentor a repair him, along with countless other brave Autobots, in a massive refit from civilians to noble defemders. Rallying together into a resistance lead by Sentinal Prime, these brave bots held fast against the Decpticon tide, putting Megatron’s dreams of conquest on indefinite hold, as they disabled the Spacebridge network to their colony's, cutting off Cybertron from the rest of the Galaxy. For millions of years this war raged on, realizing that if an advantage could not be found, it could continue for even longer.
Though he brielfy had an advantage with the death of Sentinel, his successor, Optimus, his former friend, proved an even greater challenge to defeat.
Desperately Megatron searched high and low for any means that could tip the scales in his favor. That is when he learned of the AllSpark. A mythical object said to hold the power of Primus himself. Leaving his most trusted lieutenant Shockwave in charge, he took a ship off into deep space in search of the AllSpark, unaware he was pursued by a vessel crewed by the Autobot, Lighting Strike Collation. The two ships boarded each other above a primitive organic planet, and despite his skills he was thrown from his ship by the fierce warrior Grimlock, as both their vessels plummeted planet side.
For four million years he would remain in stasis lock in the planets Arctic circle undisturbed, but for a brief encounter from a lost explorer, who quickly dismissed the event as a delusion of the cold. Unaware of the co-ordinance microscopically burned into his glasses. That centuries later allowed his army find him again and awaken to fight a new phase of the war.

It's about time I finished his character info.
I've been drawing this puppy for two years (wtf how?!) and I keep on delaying his development, but now my boy is growing and needs some proper attention from my pencil. Besides, I have way too many stories in my head and those need to come out.

Open Flesh Rick (derivative from band name) / OF Rick
This Rick never got around to discover Portal Technology. His early adult life was spent living in the garage of kind roommates, and he used his self-taught engineer and chemist skills to produce small explosive devices and recreational drugs, so he could later sell to sustain himself of rent and resources for his experiments, and music gear.
His main and solely aspiration in life was (and still is) music: he has always wished to be in a band.
However, in his late twenties he got abducted by an unexpected sudden visitor in his garage: this body hunter, who looked exactly like him but a few years older, didn’t leave him much of a choice but to tase him and bring him to one of the dark labs, possibly non associated with The Citadel of Ricks.
Rick got experimented on, by the hands of a head scientist Rick, who’s main project was to create different ways for Ricks to be able to access portal technology without being reliant on an external device. He got implanted with a bionic portal fluid containing disk, along with several bionic vertebra of his spine, all containing bionic induced portal fuid, as a replacement for his human CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid). He was brainwashed, and his neural pathways catered to access this new portal technology on command.
However, this experiment got interrupted by an explosion in the building provoked by another Rick’s rebellion’s attack on other Ricks, and after the scientist’s quick get away, Open Flesh Rick was left to die in the ruins of the lab, being nothing more than a vegetable-like failed experience.
Luckily for him, a Birdperson - Birdperson L-355 (aka Blue Birdperson), was doing a low key recon trip there, gathering tech and equipment for their own Birdpeople’s Rebellious agenda, and he happen to find this Rick, unconscious and barely alive. Being kind hearted and naive, he took Rick to his home planet, where his people provided him with care and healing, despite him not remembering anything or being able to provide any recollection of his life.
It didn’t take long for the matriarch of the Birdpeople to consider this human a liability for their planet, because whoever created that technology could easily try to retrieve him at any point - explaining that he could be considered a Person of Interest by both The Citadel / Unknown Organization and the Galactic Federation.
He was taken to Dimension H-810, more specifically to planet Têrra H-810, for it’s resemblances to Earth, and the lack of GF jurisdiction. Blue Birdperson traveled with him in a shuttle provided by the Bird People, and stayed with him for a while.
Emotionally speaking, he’s a very confused and traumatized person. Not only for having this unknown technology implanted in him, but because he feels like he doesn’t fit anywhere. His amnesiac status of not knowing who he is nor where he’s from, along with having his CSf partly replaced with the green fluid, making him neurologically unstable, created a such a turmoil in his mind, that left him to seek all sorts of destructive behavior, making him and his new friend Blue Birdperson to quickly drift apart. His personality is unstable, impulsive, and reckless.
He did manage to keep on playing music, with a bass guitar he created himself. Apparently, and luckily, some of his faculties and intelligence were slowly being accessible by him, and he didn’t waste any time of making use of those - creating and selling weapons in the black market, and playing his nights away.
Upon the opportunity to join an audition for rock bands, this conflicted with BP’s desire to keep him safe. Rick was supposed to stay low key and out of sight, and BP feared getting into a band and playing at bars would leave him exposed to possible threats, and eventually expose his own people's whereabouts. This created a rupture even further in their relationship, along with BP’s deep traditional customs, making him leave again for his home planet and dimension.
While trying his luck in his almost non-existent musical journey, he connected with another Birdperson from that dimension, Birdperson H-810. This older man not only had no connection to his people, he despised everything related with laws and the government. And being in a band with his friend mutant Squanchy, their musical interests just hit perfectly.
This led quickly to a band partnership and romantical relationship. Rick, not knowing who he is, not belonging anywhere, felt safe and comfortable with someone who didn’t care about origins or backgrounds. And so their story together began.
NOTES: Rick found out his name was Rick Sanchez, due to a reading bio printed in his arm, possibly from the years he got experimented on. He proceeded to black out both his scars and bio tagged arms.
Against a better judgment, his drugged out and wasted behavior leaves him to perform/ walk around shirtless many times, exposing his bionic portal fluid disk. Birdperson’s laid back behavior does nothing to prevent this, nor is worried of the consequences of this actions.
They have a small shitty one-bedroom apartment, and when they can’t get around to make enough money for it, they’ll sleep wherever they can, often using Squanchy’s music practice storage room to crash. Rick always keeps a small lab station wherever he lives.
It wasn’t until one day, against Birdperson’s desire of Rick to keep himself in the dark and staying who he is, they managed to collect enough credits to access a very shady technology that would resurface his memories of being abducted and experimented on. This would give him confirmation of the real responsible ones for his situation, and possibly his original dimension name.
After this revelation, whenever he gets around it, his focus shifts into trying to discover how to complete the process of the technology he has in him, and figuring out how to access it.

LOONG is a Chinese dragon. Much of the loong’s mystery lies in its unknown origins. Loong-esque motifs have been unearthed at sites dating back 8,000 years, though experts generally agree that the earliest examples of a fully formed loong discovered to date are the 6,000-year-old mosaics unearthed at the Xishuipo site in what is now the central province of Henan.
In their earliest form, loong were generally depicted with a long snake-like body, but some had feet and dorsal fins, as well as other regional variations. This has led scholars to speculate about the origins of the loong, with some pointing to the Yangtze alligator or snakes, while others argue that the image may have been derived from natural phenomena that ancient Chinese were unable to explain, such as rainbows, lightning, or tornadoes.
It would take thousands of years for their image to solidify into what we see today. Indeed, the complexity of the loong lies in its imaginative mix of body parts accrued slowly over millennia. By the Shang (ca. 1600–1046 B.C.) and Zhou dynasties (1046–256 B.C.), the details had become more concrete, including a large mouth, upturned snout, prominent eyes and ears, and alligator-shaped body. A number of jade loong unearthed from a Shang-period tomb at Yinxu in Henan have similar eyes, rhomboid patterns along their bodies, and a raised spine, all of which were common in loong depictions from the Shang period and suggestive that representations of the beast had stabilized.
People in ancient China believed that loong could not only fly, but also shuttle through realms, guiding and leading human souls into the worlds of ghosts and gods. The Hunan Museum has in its collection a silk painting of a man riding a loong that was unearthed from a tomb dating to the Warring States period (475–221 B.C.). The man wears a scholarly robe and tall hat, carries a sword at his waist, and has an umbrella above his head. Tassels on the umbrella and beneath his chin fly backward, showing a sense of speed and forward movement as the loong beneath him rushes ahead. Bent into a boat shape, with its head bowed forward, the beast seemingly leads the hero to another realm.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Well, because that's the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that's the gauge they used. So, why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing. Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break more often on some of the old, long distance roads in England . You see, that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since. And what about the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match or run the risk of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with this?', you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.) Now, the twist to the story: When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, a major Space Shuttle design feature, of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control almost everything. 😁😁

SPACE COWBOYS
Why did the SR 71 pilots and RSO’s have something that look like spurs on the back of their boots?
These are part of the foot restraint system fitted to the seats used in the SR-71, later U-2 and some Space Shuttles. (They're all derived from the same basic design).
The spurs engage in two ball nipples that protrude from the lower part of the seat. The nipples are connected via cables to reels beneath the rear of the seat which pull the pilots feet in during the ejection sequence.
The seat separation sequence severs these cables (amongst other things) allowing the seat to drop away.#SR-71

Figured I'd post some more art here since that's ostensibly what this blog is for (ha). So, here's a dramatic staging shot of Ares II, my fictional alternate history shuttle-derived launch vehicle.
The rocket comprises a first stage of two 5-segment SRBs spaced apart as on shuttle, braced at the bottom with a wing connector (the thing in the top left here). They attach at the top to a suspended upper stage that's basically a modified ET with two SSMEs and a regular fairing.
I'd tried this shot a few times with Ares I but kept getting carried away with perfectionism, so it was nice to get this one out.

Remember when someone did a post to explain what the meanings of the names mean with the characters? Well, I am putting it here in this post.
The analysis and meaning of the names had already been done before but this post is about compiling all the meanings of the character's names here. I do not take any credit for the translations and the meanings belong to the original translators I am putting it here for reference. I put their name meanings here in case someone is struggling to name there k project oc this is used as a reference to help.
The Silver Clan: White Rice Party
Yashiro Isana (伊佐那 社)
Isana (伊佐那), i (伊, that one), sa (佐, assistant, help) and na (那, what?). Yashiro (社, shrine)
Yashiros are temporary shrines set up for deities, this is a reference to how the body known as ‘Isana Yashiro’ (who is, in fact, Hieda Touru) is just a vessel for the silver king Adolf K. Weismann and not his true body much like how yashiro's body is temporarily used for a vessel for his soul.
His surname Isana (伊佐那) is derived from Izanagi (伊耶那岐命, Izanagi-no-Mikoto) and Izanami (伊耶那美命, Izanami-no-Mikoto) this is a reference to the twin heavenly deities in Shinto mythology who gave birth to the islands and made Japan and other Shinto deities of Japanese and represent life and death. This references his real identity as the first Silver King and the founder king being responsible for the birth of other kings
life and death play a part in Adolf and Claudia, which infers How Adolf became the silver king cursed with immortality after Claudia's death forced him to live while his sister was dead.
Besides being named after Izanagi Shiro’s last name has further significance in the story, Isana can be a play on his airy nature but refers to his amnesia in the story and his kind personality before regaining his memories.
Adolf K. Weismann
His real name “Adolf” comes from the Germanic name Adalwolf which means “noble wolf” and "wise wolf”, indicating both his nobilty in German myth wolfs are connected to kings and rulers which references his status as a king. This might infer the term "lone wolf” reference to his loneliness Of being selected as the king cursed to live as his sisters exiled himself from the world out of fear because he doesn’t want to involve himself with anyone that he eventually has to watch die yeah he doesn’t-have it off easily.
His initial K is a reference to the title of the series
Weissmann is a German surname meaning “white man” referencing to Shiro being the silver king.
His nickname “Shiro” can be written as “white" in Japanese. The term used for “Silver King” in Japanese, (白銀の王, Hakugin no Ō) has the character for "white” (haku,白) while “gin” means (銀, silver) in Weismman “Weis” means “white” in “German”, This references that Shiro is the first king the silver king.
Claudia Weismann
The name Claudia means "lame” or “crippled” but could probably be named after Saint Claudia, the Martyr of Rome who was mentioned in the New Testament, this can reference the impression that Claudia gives off that of the image of “the lost saint” and to how she She died saving Adolf life from falling debris from the bombing raid.
Claudia references Izanami as one of the creator gods in mythology She Along with her brother was in charge of the research of the slate that created the kings Izanami’s death references Claudia’s own death.
Neko “Miyabi Ameno” (雨乃雅日)
Ameno (雨乃), Ame (雨, rain), no (乃, from). Miya (雅, gracious. elegant, refined) and bi (日, day, sun).
Neko’s first name Miyabi(雅日) came from Wakahirume no mikoto (稚日女尊, Wakahirume-no- Mikoto.) the kanji “稚日女尊” is miswritten as "雅日女尊” since 稚&雅 look alike. Wakahirume is a weaving deity who served Amaterasu, says Susano threw a horse skinned alive into the room she weaving startled she fell off the loom and pricked herself by the shuttle of the loom this frightened Amatarsu she hid in the cave. this could reference to how Neko used her powers to change his memories hence hiding him from the other clansmen while preventing him from coming out of his metaphorical cave and how she hangs around Shiro.
the kanji can refer to how she is considered good-looking by the cast with sensual curves and her her bright sunny disposition.
Neko’s surname Ameno derives from Ameno Uzume (天宇受, Ameno Uzume) with the kanji changed. Ameno Uzume is the goddess of mirth who danced naked to draw Amaterasu out of hiding in her cave this is a node to how Neko is seen naked in the series and her role in drawing Shiro to come out of the metaphorical cave that he puts himself in. in the Kojiki it described her as “made the deities laugh” I think this can reference to how she brings Shiro happiness.
surname means “of rain” This is a reference to Neko’s love of baths even though she is a cat and rain is used to describe the sadness in her lonely life before she met Shiro
Neko’s name makes the beginning and end of Amatarasus's hiding along with the disaster due to the sun refusing to come out.
Kuroh Yatogami (夜刀神 狗朗)
Yatogami (夜刀神), Ya (夜, night) to (刀, sword, knife, blade) gami (神, god). Kuroh (狗朗), Ku (狗, dog) roh (朗, melodious, clear, bright, serene, cheerful). Kuroh’s surname Yatogami comes from Yato no gami (Yato no gami,
夜刀の神 ) are snake deities in Japanese folklore that are a symbol of enjoying peace and prosperity under a benevolent ruler but also have the power to kill a person and an entire family if someone sets their eyes on them. they are expelled from this original dwelling land the man who expelled them defied them and worshiped them at a place called Yashiro.
this references Kuroh's backstory, the deities rumored to bring familial extermination to anyone who saw them notes to how Kuroh is seen as an angel of death by his family and shunned by his own family after the deaths of his family, then his aunt and uncle. Like Yatogami he had to leave the place he grew up with and later ended up with Yashiro Isana like the Yashiro of the tale
the last kanji in his name refers to Kuroh's personality being honest, calm, and bright, the first kanji in his name means "dog”, and the pronunciation of “kuro” alone means “black in Japanese this contributes to his nickname “black dog”.
Kukuri commented that their names Kuro and Shiro are like Othella this plays into K focusing on contrastionals with the two main characters referring to it.
HOMRA
Suoh Mikoto (周防 尊)
Suoh (周防), Su (周, circumference, circuit) oh (防, protect, resist). Mikoto (尊, noble, exalted)
Mikoto (尊, Mikoto) is taken from the full name of the deity Susano-o no Mikoto (素戔嗚尊, Susano-o no Mikoto). Mikoto is named after the kami Susano, he is Amataerasu’s little brother and was originally in charge of the storms and seas he is known for his violent temper that caused problems, and was expelled from the heavenly realm. This refers to Mikoto's most prominent qualities as the red king being violent. Mikoto can reference his charisma as something he had before he became king
His last name Suoh (周防) comes from an old Japanese province of Yamaguchi Prefecture that is dedicated to a red tortoise in the Nihon Shoki and is well known for its chopper ore (a red color) in the Shoku Nihongi This is a reference to Mikoto being the red king and his hair color. the Yamaguchi Prefecture harbors the Tamanoya shrine that enshrines the creator of the Yata mirror and Yasakani magatama I find this fascinating that it references Yata and Anna from the Red clan.
his surname refers to his quiet kind nature in which he wants to protect others around him.
Izumo Kusanagi (草薙出雲)
Kusanagi (草薙) Kusa (草, grass, pasture, write) nagi (薙, mow down). Izumo (出雲) Izu (出, exit, come out, put out) mo (雲, cloud).
Kusanagi is named after the sword of Kusanagi (草薙剣, Kusanagi-no-tsurugi) one of the three imperial regalia of Japan which the sword itself represents valor. It's a sword that has a connection to Mikoto as with the legend that the sword is seen in the body of the servant that Susano slayed and presented it to Amaterasu to settle an old grievance. Kusanagi being named after a divine sword is a reference to his combat ability to how Izumo is the second strongest in Homura.
Izumo is the name of a shrine (出雲大社, Izumotaisha) that worships Susano's son, Izumo might refer to his role as an information pathway to Homra and his additional role as the one to clean up his clansmen's messes.
Totsuka Tatara (十束多々良)
Totsuka (十束多) to (十, ten) tsuka (束, bundle, manage, control). Tatara (多々良) ta (多, many, frequent, much) tata (多々, very much, very many) ra (良, good, pleasing, skilled)
Tostuka is derived from the sword of Totsuka (十束剣, Totsuka-no-Tsurugi) the sword of the kami susano the blade that Susano uses to slay the serpent. Also used by Izanangi to behead his son Kagutsuchi who is the kami of fire Kagutsu's death marked the beginning of death in the world. The sword was taken by the underworld when Izanagi came to visit Izanami the sword is made of metal a part of the element of earth connected with death. his name is from a kind of sword alludes to his hidden strength, and his role in Homra the peacemaker, and the beast tamer.
Tatara is derived from the tatara method of iron making, the tatara method uses iron sand dread old iron ore and smelts it in a hot fire. There is an old Japanese saying that those who work in Tatara iron making welcome the dead this is because dead bodies in Japanese lore represent the element of earth and iron metal is purified earth. The amount of dead in tatara works was said to increase during the purification process. iron is created from the dead and in the case of the sword also creates more dead people, while poisoning those who work with Tatara with death. his given name is an obvious reference to his overall personality and many hobbies
His entire name is closely connected with death with his given name dead from Tatara and metal/earth and with the beginning of death in the world and underworld from Totsuka no Tsurugi. His name shows that he is created to die in some respects and his death was meant to be a catalyst for what happened with Homra
Yata Misaki (八田美咲)
Yata (八田) ya (八, eight) ta (田, rice field), Misaki (美咲) Mi (美, beauty, beautiful) saki (咲, blossom, bloom)
Despite the different kanji the word Misaki is used seen with how Misaki (御先, Misaki) can translate to vanguard also a term used to call small-scale divine spirits who are subordinates to high-ranking deities appearing as the deity's omen or messengers. Misaki is a homage to the Hinomisaki shrine (日御碕神社, Hinomisaki Jinja) which is a shrine and lighthouse, the upper shrine is dedicated to Susano, and the lower shrine to Amaterasu notes on how Yata is the vanguard of Homra.
his given name Misaki could be a play on how he doesn’t think before he acts more often than not ending up in all sorts of messes, his given name is revealed in a short story yatas mom named her children after plant theme.
the Yata comes from Yatagarasu (八咫烏) the three-legged crow sun incarnate and a symbol of guidance. Yatagarasu is the three-legged crow that guided Emperor Jimmu on his eastern expedition and is also said to live in the sun.
Yatagarsu is the misaki of Kumano no Ookami (熊野大神, Kumano no Ookami) also known as Susano o. This is a callback to how Yata is the vanguard of Homra serving under Mikoto and later Anna.
Yata is named after the mirror of Yata (八咫鏡, Yata no Kagami) one of the three imperial regalia in Japan the mirror represents honesty and wisdom. this notes how Yata is straightforward and honest about his emotions and his growth and maturity in the series. Yata’s name is connected to Fushimi Yatagarsu and Sarutahiko is known as guides of high-ranking diety both of them have names from guidance kami and are said to pave the way for the rulers. a clever reference to their relationship and their relationships with their respective kings.
eight is a lucky number in Japanese, which may be why he's been lucky so far hasn’t been gravely injured or near death, and rice fields are a source of food which is why he is so full of energy.
Anna Kushina (櫛名アンナ)
Kushina (櫛名) Kushi (櫛, comb) na (名, name, distinguished, reputation)
There is no meaning of Anna's name in Japanese but someone did make a post that might guess her name could come from the Christian Bible Apocrypha [Gospel of Jacob] What is Anna the mother of the virgin Mary Anna is known as a woman dressed in red which is annas signature color when she joins Homura and is regarded as a mystic which references Anna's powers of clairvoyance.
Anna’s last name, Kushina (櫛名) comes from the kami Kushinadahime (Kushinada-hime,櫛名田比売) She is the wife of the kami Susano with is associated with Suoh Mikoto. She was originally going to be eaten by Yamata no Orochi the eight-headed dragon but Susano slew it with Totsuka's sword after making a deal to save her in return for her hand in marriage Susano turned her into a comb to hide while he slew the snake she is named after Kushinadahime who was saved and married subsequently by Susano.
much like her kami counterpart Kushinadahime, Anna was rescued by Mikoto who is the counterpart for Susano. the snake, in fact, is Mizuchi, Mizuchi is based on the Orochi in mythology his kanji is a Japanese homophone of the water dragon. who kidnaps Kushina and he kidnaps Anna and makes her a king through his experiments. Anna’s ability and relationship to sync with Mikoto seem to represent the close relationship between Susano and Kushinadahime. Like Totsuka and Kusanagi her name is chosen because of her counterpart connection to Mikoto's counterpart as a close support of his
Kushi might be a reference to her short hair, "na" is connected to her position as Homra clairvoyant and later red king.
Honami Kushina (櫛名穂波)
Honami’s name (穂波) means “waving heads of grain”, it's mostly like she's a stand-in for Kushinada-hime’s elderly parents who asked for help from Susano. Kushinada-hime mother was a farmer and the goddess of an early harvest and gentle affection, gentle affection is associated with Honami
Rikio Kamamoto (鎌本力夫)
Riki(力,power, strength, strong, strain, bear up, exert) o (夫, man, husband). Kama (鎌,sickle) Moto (本, base, root, origin).
Rikio’s name is similar to the deity Ame-no-tajikarao (天手力男, Ame-no-tajikarao) with having the same kanji. Ame-no-tajikarao removed the cave door Amaterasu was hiding and pulled her out returning light to the world after she hid from Susano. He is said to have Herculean strength and the kami of power and sports this is a reference to Kamamoto's strength and how he gets Yata out of a depressed funk to get him to save Anna.
Saburōta Bandō (坂東三郎太)
San(三, three) ro (郎, son) ta (太, thick, big). Ban (坂, slope, hill) do (東, east)

Hisui has a connection to the god Hiruko (水蛭子 or 比留子) later known as Ebisu (恵比須, 恵比寿, 夷, 戎) his name comes from Ebisu with the same kanji in his name from, he was the deformed leach child of Izanagi and Izanami and was set adrift later he became Ebisu well known for maritime connection.
his first name Nagare (流) seems to connect to Hiruko as “流” can mean “exile” which Hiruko was first in exile. the heavy water imagery as the reading of the kanji relates to a stream of water or something adrift.

Torinoiwakusufune carrying hiruko on a boat references Iwa’s relationship with Nagare that he was the one who was taking care of his needs and the one who kept his powers in check with his fog and restricted him in a chair to prevent his powers from going out of control being metaphorically boat in a way that helps him get from one place
to another and a rock to keep him stable and is the second command of the jungle despite being a king. might provide a foreshadowing of his true identity as the grey king and his clan cathedral that acts as a sanctuary until the creator's accident.
Iwafune is also from Iwafune Shrine [磐船神社], these shrines are dedicated to a ship the shaped rock believed to be the vessel used by deities when descending the earth.
Tenkei (天鶏) is a Chinese constellation “celestial cock” (天雞) which is the rooster in heaven that crows at daybreak. leading roosters on earth to crow after it. this is a reference to his real name Otori which has a bird in the kanji further hinting at his true identity as the grey king.

Kotosaka has numerous meanings but the meaning I would choose for him would be Kotosaka no kami (言離神] the alias of Hitokotonushi-no- kami [一言主神, literally the God of One Word) and Yomotsukotosakanoo (aka Kotosakanoo-no-Mikoto), a kami of the underworld it means to sever a relationship in the Nihongi he appeared alongside Hayatamanoo (速玉之男神) to sever the relationship between the original kami, Izanagi, and Izanami he was there to hold Izanangi to his oath when Izanagi spoke the words of divorce at the Yomotsu Hirasaka. these meanings fit Kotosaka himself this is in how he was present during Nagare's death and stayed by his side while he was dying and how Kotosaka is always seen talking in one word or repeating something that was said and is used as a medium for Nagare for speaking to others

Kukuri Yukizome (雪染 菊理)
Kukuri is named after Kukuri hime no kami (菊理姫神) the goddess of meditation, negotiation, matchmaking, and marriage. She mediated on behalf of Izanami and Izanagi when Izanagi talked to her during the month of the underworld and reconciled them, bringing peace to the world mediating between the living and the dead. This matches Kukuri very well
reflects her cheerful personality and friendship with Shiro she is sociable and helpful she helps mediate the chaos of the awakening superpowers and she is Shiro's link to a normal life.

His first name Tooru is jampacked of meaning this can reference his lack of presence and his harmless appearance and ability to blend in the background which is why he was chosen by Nagare to be the host body for the colorless king. and that he was once a vessel for the colorless king to inhibit.
Hieda may refer to Hieda no Are (稗田 阿礼) a person known for being vital to kojikis completion. little is known about Hidea no Are including gender but some theorize they may be distant descendants of the goddess Ameno-Uzume. This is a reference to his appearance in the story as early as completing the plan for the silver king to be drawn out.
Saya Konohana (木野花 沙耶)
Saya (沙耶) sa (沙, sand) ya (耶, question mark), konohana (木野花) ko (木, field, wilderness) Hana (花, flower, blossom)
Saya’s entire name comes from Konohanasakuya-hime (木花開耶姫) the kami of cherry blossoms and mt fuji she was said to be in charge of volcanos and has an explosive temper this is a reference to her uncontrollable power in the beginning in the route.
Mitsuha Kurayama (闇山 光葉)

the kanji in the given name doesn't match the kami I was thinking of but if there's one thing that his surname is Kurayama (闇山) in fact If I were to guess what he is based on I would think it is Kuramitsuha (闇御津羽神 – Ravine Water Rushing). Kuramitsuha is one of the two kami born from the blood of Kagutsuchi after he was beheaded by Izanagi, the blood caught on the sword hilt formed this kami.
another kami would be Kurayamatsumi (闇山津見神 – Mountain Gorge Majesty) the kami born from the body of Kagutsuchi after he was beheaded and was born from Kagutsuchi’s privates
I find his connection to the kami Kagutsuchi is a reference to Mitsuha’s obsession with becoming Kagustsu in the series which led to a twisted fascination with Suoh.

Corbin watches the steam rise from his mug against the backdrop of the Fishbowl. Stars outside, plants and the mess of the Wayfarer inside. He’s only just back aboard, once again a GC citizen. It’s new and yet achingly familiar. He technically had been welcome in the Fishbowl before but he’d never felt drawn to it, if he’s being honest, he hadn’t felt like he belonged.
Now… he doesn’t want to be alone in his lab.
Kizzy is gleefully showing Rosemary something on her scrib that he’s sure he doesn’t want to know about. Before he’d have complained about how loud Kizzy is being, now there’s something oddly charming about how she sprawls across the sofa (and Rosemary) and laughs loudly. He’s pretty sure he will never want that kind of friendship with this crew but they are his family. He’s learnt that now. Rosemary catches his eye and she gives him a small nod. He gives one back. She’d made sure his lab had all the right equipment and his room was comfortable for his return but when he’d thanked her, she’d simply shrugged as if it was no big deal and welcomed him home.
He almost laughs as Sissix enters the room and places a hand on his shoulder in greeting. A year ago it would have been like a star imploding but she’d saved his life. Stars, she’d saved his life again and again and he’d learnt. He was a scientist, he knew how to iterate and adapt and he’d managed to pull his head out of his ass and find common ground with Sissix. They still weren’t close friends, but they were family. He had a feather in his room now. About six months into her sponsorship of him, one of her hatch-parents had died and he’d booked the first shuttle to Hashkath and packed her bags for her. He may have been an asshole but he wasn’t cruel. She had given him family when she could have let him die. He wasn’t going to let that kindness keep her from her family when she needed them and they needed her. They’d talked a lot after that, something about it had broken the remaining ice between them and they’d come to a better understanding.
He sips at his tea and watches the stars go by, the chatter as background noise. It’s a welcome relief to hear familiar, happy voices after that brief captivity. He shivers and pulls the blue blanket up around his shoulders. Sometimes he is sure that cold had settled permanently into his bones. His thoughts are interrupted by Dr. Chef’s loud laugh from the kitchen. He was teaching Jenks and Ashby how to cook some Grum specialty noone could pronounce. Jenks didn’t smile a lot now but Corbin caught the quiet sound of his laugh too. Jenks is healing. They all are, slowly but surely.
“May we- I join you?” a low voice from behind him pulls his attention.
Ohan. Corbin almost doesn’t recognise him. He looks healthy, bright eyes and full fur. Corbin swallows. He’s still not sure how Ohan feels about him after what he did, but this is a good sign. Corbin nods and Ohan settles in a puddle of limbs into the couch beside him. They don’t touch but it’s clear Ohan derives comfort from Corbin’s presence. That is still a strange concept. Corbin offers Ohan a spare blanket and the Sianat tilts his head for a moment before nodding. Awkwardly, Corbin drapes the blanket around Ohan’s shoulders and Ohan purs in clear comfort. They don’t say anything to each other as they sit there and that’s okay. They’re not looking for conversation, simply the reassurance that they are not alone. Noone has to be alone here. Not even him.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Well, because that's the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that's the gauge they used. So, why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing. Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break more often on some of the old, long distance roads in England . You see, that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since. And what about the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match or run the risk of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's as came up with this?', you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' ases.)  Now, the twist to the story: When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, a major Space Shuttle design feature, of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's as. And you thought being a horse's as wasn't important? Ancient horse's as*es control almost everything. 😁😁
