I have finished the first book and reached 43% of the second AND finished the first season and started the second.

Thoughts:

As I said before, there are things I really like and dislike about both. It's nice to not have a play by play after just experiencing it all in the books so it's fun to see what they've changed.

I like to see them as two different entities because they really are. The part that's changed that I dislike the most is family not being as big a part. Rhonda and Number Two are portrayed as friends for sure but the family aspect between them and Benedict is missing and makes me sad. Plus Constance and her lack of family connection with them!!! I loved that bit in the book and it's making me so sad. I get why they're showing a distance between Kate and Milligan but it just feels ehhhh.

Otherwise, the changes have been really interesting. There are a few other things I didn't like but nothing as big as the above. It's hilarious how much they're diverting from the plot and I'm so fascinated to see where it goes. I think I like different parts of them better than the other, but I think overall I like the books better. Toddler Constance is fucking hilarious and I love her.

I'm excited to read and watch more.

i have this entire fleshed out shy reader lore for i guess a hypothetical universe where shy reader dated jj and/or pope first but eventually they broke up because of the whole season one treasure plotline not even because of a lack of love but mostly just her feeling neglected and alone. right at the end of all of that is when she would meet rafe just when he’s in that season two craziness/spiral and they become so insanely codependent and just around there somewhere when the pogues hate rafe even more they find out he’s dating shy reader and it’s just a whole other layer. so basically obx writers let me into the room.

Methas is just... guh, watching him fall for JJ and get more and more interested in him and finally truly falling for him and being unable to let go and needing him and how this is moving past his grief as well and how JJ has never given him an inch but also has never held back is the most beautiful part of this damn show, okay?

JJ and Methas are about growing to be better people together. To grow and be better and to fall in love and what it means to change for the person you love because you want to change for them. Because they set a boundary and you realized that loving them was worth that boundary and worth changing and worth growing and it's just so beautiful.

Methas reminding JJ that he promised he would show him what it meant to be a kind person and JJ knowing that he wants to do this and Methas leaning in closer and closer each time, doing everything he can to keep JJ at his side and discovering new sides to himself in the process, the parts of himself that he locked up and forgot about and maybe never knew.

When he started laughing at the movie... when he let go and just laughed and jumped and leaned into him and fed him popcorn and Methas was finally living again, loving again, caring again, open again. And JJ's been the one showing that it's safe to do that again.

Next to what happens when JJ asks Methas to prove he's serious by giving up money and a chance at his business advancement, the ultimate sacrifice to show his willingness to change... but also the true ultimate ask of him.
