Only The River Flows ('15'): Bleak Chinese Noir that requires concentration (and then some).
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Only the River Flows” (2023) (from the London Film Festival). (He bian de cuo wu) I attended the UK premier showing of this one introduced by the director himself, Shujun Wei (see the video below the trailer). This is a film noir, Chinese-style. I enjoyed the experience, but frankly found it very difficult to follow. But I’ll admit…

Huang Xiaoming in the film DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY (阳光俱乐部), which will premiere at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival.
The movie, whose Chinese title translates to "Sunshine Club," revolves around a mentally challenged man (Huang Xiaoming) who lives a happy life with his optimistic mother. But the family is soon shook to its core when the mother is diagnosed with cancer, prompting the protagonist to believe he can help through the power of positive energy, while his elder brother, a doctor, attempts to cure her through conventional means.
Xiaoming spent more than a month dining, talking and studying with mentally challenged people. He also gained more than 15 kilograms in weight and paid visits to the family of mentally challenged persons to portray the role well.
"I am a family-oriented person," said Huang. "I love this script and the story of this special group of people touched me."
The film is helmed by post-90s generation director Wei Shujun. Xiaoming spoke highly of young director Wei's distinct expressive style of the story and characters, adding that it had been his long-time wish to cooperate with him.

"Only the River Flowers" Review
Tumblr media
At the Roxie I watched "Only the River Flows" directed by Wei Shujun. This was a rather odd but interesting neo noir film. It was dark and raining through much of the film. Even though this film was released in 2023, the film had a rather grainy texture. Throughout there were small comedic moments. As the film progressed the detective Captain leading the investigation seemed to be losing his mind just a bit. This seemed to be due to the complexity of the case, memories of his own past which seemed uncertain and his wife's pregnancy and problem that developed with it. Add to that the issue that the main suspect was a "madman" which was the name by which he was known within the community. From IMDb, "Chief police investigates a series of murders in a riverside town in rural China in the 1990s. An arrest is made quickly, clues push the policeman to dive deeper into the hidden behaviour of the locals". The film also abounds with references to and issues present in China in the 1990s, including the Chief of Police's driving interest in ping pong. The Chief was the boss of the primary detective. I enjoyed this film although distinguishing what was reality and what was not was a bit difficult at times. Too bad the director didn't adopt Tarkovsky's habit of switching from color to b&w in such situations. Well, possibly this director didn't want his audience to have this clarity.
This was a special showing sponsored with a Chinese community group. The director was present and at the end a Q&A session was held. Although it seemed that the director understood English he answered in Mandarin. Also some questions from the audience were in Mandarin. Fortunately there was a translator. However I think not everything was completely or clearly translated because there was laughter at various moments while Mandarin was being spoken but I couldn't figure out anything amusing when the English translation was given. It also seemed that the director didn't necessarily always give clear and/or complete answers. This really isn't unique since I've listened to Q&A sessions totally in English where the same thing occurred.
I do suggest reading the review by Jessica Kiang in Variety, May 25, 2023. It will provide a possibly better and more entertaining view of the film.

Film „Kritična zona” iranskog reditelja Alija Ahmadzadea najbolji na 29. FAF-u
Pobednik 29.
Ovogodišnji žiri radio u tročlanom sastavu Draško Plavšić S.A.S, Goran Volarević S.A.S. i Vojislav Gelevski UFUS.
