Huang Xiaoming in the film DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY (阳光俱乐部), which will premiere at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival.
The movie, whose Chinese title translates to "Sunshine Club," revolves around a mentally challenged man (Huang Xiaoming) who lives a happy life with his optimistic mother. But the family is soon shook to its core when the mother is diagnosed with cancer, prompting the protagonist to believe he can help through the power of positive energy, while his elder brother, a doctor, attempts to cure her through conventional means.
Xiaoming spent more than a month dining, talking and studying with mentally challenged people. He also gained more than 15 kilograms in weight and paid visits to the family of mentally challenged persons to portray the role well.
"I am a family-oriented person," said Huang. "I love this script and the story of this special group of people touched me."
The film is helmed by post-90s generation director Wei Shujun. Xiaoming spoke highly of young director Wei's distinct expressive style of the story and characters, adding that it had been his long-time wish to cooperate with him.

Only The River Flows ('15'): Bleak Chinese Noir that requires concentration (and then some).
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Only the River Flows” (2023) (from the London Film Festival). Original Chinese Title: 河边的错屋 (He bian de cuo wu) I attended the UK premier showing of this one introduced by the director himself, Shujun Wei (see the video below the trailer). This is a film noir, Chinese-style. I enjoyed the experience, but frankly found it very difficult to follow. But I’ll admit…

By Sirena Kuo Miu Miu Welcomes the Year of the Snake with "The Encounter" Miu Miu steps into the Chinese New Year with a fresh perspective through The Encounter (如期而遇), a short film directed by Shujun Wei, a filmmaker known for his nuanced storytelling. Starring brand ambassadors Liu Haocun and Zhao Jinmai, the film unfolds in Yi Lau Yi, a bustling Cantonese tea house in Beijing. Against the backdrop of clinking teacups and a live three-piece band, the story takes a surreal turn when the musicians and other diners suddenly vanish, leaving the two actors in an eerily empty space. What follows is a whimsical journey as they dance, create music, and explore a dreamlike setting that feels both intimate and celebratory—a perfect nod to the Year of the Snake. Key pieces include oversized sweaters, blouson jackets, preppy tweeds, and jewel-encrusted denim paired with signature ballerinas, loafers, and strappy kitten heels. Accessories take center stage, with exclusive iterations of the Penny, Wander, and Arcadie bags alongside playful bag charms like a crochet-knit serpent and personalized Chinese knots available at select locations. Other highlights include rose-tinted eyewear, opera gloves, and cotton underwear in festive red—a classic symbol of luck for the season.
