2024 VIDEO GAME WRAP UP!!!! for fun here are my rankings and short reviews for every game i played this year... well not every game but every new game i played and completed that i spent at least 10+ hours on 😚 also no major spoilers yayyy!!! ranking from least fave to fave woohoo

9. aa3

a waste of my goddamn time... not just the worst game i played this year but also the worst game ive ever played PERIOD.... i spent like a good 3/4 months complaining abt it so i wont do that song and dance again, but to summarize it rq... this game does a whole lot to just essentially say 2 things: which is 1.) "minors are capable of seducing adults and can be held liable for doing such" and 2.) "abuse victims do not deserve ANY grace when considering the actions they take against their abusers". if my words were waterdrops i could turn a desert into an oasis with how much i have to complain abt this piece of shit.. anyways FUCK THIS GAME! AND FUCK SHU TAKUMI! 🖕

I DONT hate this game in fact w the exception of aa3 i enjoyed all the games ive played, basically low ranking =/= bad game, but aa1 is down here bc well hmmm it was a good game thats for sure (tho some of its game design was frustrating and could stand to be better; a lot of aa1 was revisting locations again and again to find a story trigger), but it wasnt.. super remarkable to me 😗 at least compared to how excellent aa2 and aa4 were. the homosexuality was sooo delicious tho like trust i still hate phoenicolas wright but i love his derangedness too.. i have a very love hate relationship with aa. ANYWAYS!

i still stand by my opinion that 2-4 is the best case of the first four games like that was a MASTERPIECE in pacing and drama and THEMES AND RAHHHHH I STILL LOVE IT SO MUCH but sadly i cant let one case alone carry my entire opinion on this game, cuz as good as 2-4 is i cannot ignore how weak the other cases were... especially 2-3. i rly dont have to say anything abt big top now do i 😑 but still 2-4 was good enough for me to rank this game above aa3 & aa1.. franziska i love you 4EVER

6. slay the spire

this game really fucking possessed me at the start of the year wrsjdkbxks and i just checked my total amt of game time i played it this year and my god i played fucking um. 200+ hours..?!#? 😭😭😭 so yeah i Truly enjoyed this game i think its so super duper fun and ADDICTIVE and its just a tried and true roguelike that allows sooo much experimentation, its great!! its quite low on my ranking tho cuz ive fell off quite a bit w how busy ive been but also i guess i played it so much that it started to feel repetitive to me HAHHH but thats also after 200+ hours sooo.. its still a pretty damn good game?! but anyways yeah im looking forward to the sequel very very much <3 <3

5. tales of vesperia

TALES OF FUCKING VESPERIAAAAA im still not done picking apart this game yet but god what a fucking. game. thing. EXPERIENCE... is it mid yes. definitely. but also like.... not entirely. like idk after playing i was definitely frustrated with several story aspects but as i was playing through the game itself, especially during the beginning and the middle of the game, the writing was sooo fucking strong and engaging and compelling and that does count for something to me. in spite of Everything i still really enjoyed it. also this game was gorgeous. and i loved how unexpectedly funky the music was. and the combat was soooo fun even tho i was complete ass at it. mediocre game and i mean this in the kindest heartwarming way ever with ALL the love in my heart. i hope yuri lowell gets hit by a car

3 & 4. aa4 and 999 zero escape

i cannot decide which one i like better so fuck it theyre both on the same ranking. ill talk abt aa4 first. although um its a bit hard to talk abt what makes aa4 so awesome without spoilers.. but essentially apollo and trucy >>>>>>>>>> phoenix and maya. in so many ways. i love apollo. and trucy. and their dynamic. also klavier was an extremely compelling prosecutor. godot was a joke and edgeworth was kinda just a tsundere with trauma (franziska is a queen tho), but klavier was veryy rich and interesting in both his actions and his motivations. ok im starting to make myself sad again thinking abt aa4's lost potential WAHHH but yeah its still a gem even if it kinda fell on its face at the finish line. def my fave aa out of the four and also easily my MOST FAVORITE soundtrack too. not just of aa games but of every game i played this year I LOVEEE the music of this game. so much. mwah. also fuck whatever the haters say i loved every case of this game. yes 4-2 and 4-3 were good idgaf

now onto 999 zero escape... another game with absolutely amazing art direction. the music and the backgrounds and the dreary and tense atmosphere is soooooo fucking good. also this is another game thats hard to talk about with spoiling everything. fuck. its ok tho we move. but yeah the [REDACTED] aspect of the gameplay was sooooooo Wowww and WOW and intriguing and there is something sooo so wrong with junpei so it was so fun to play as an absolute weirdo and also the writing was solid enough where i was able to predict a good amt of plot twists which was super satisfying and rewarding like this was a damn good game. its a shame that certain elements were dropped and werent as fleshed out but in spite of this it was still an incredible experience. and yas i cried at the ending that was heartbreaking and GOOD.... great experience. have you heard of the crystallization of glycerin

2. style savvy

STYLE!!!!! SAVVY!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was not expecting to love this game as much as i did but wow it is AMAZING... like first of all the music. gorgeous and chic and fun and popping. and then THE VISUAL AESTHETIC.... this game is incredible. it looks so good and it is so charming and the fashion outfits are great and despite being 10+ years old the models aged sooo well and also i love the skin color diversity too its so fab..!!!! and the gameplay WOWW im in love with how unexpectedly strategic it is like the game wont tell it to u but once you figure out what clothings are from what brands then Thats The Key.... thats how u ace the customers requests on ur first try! and then the limited storage makes buying outfits strategic too and its a balance between having enough to sell but selling enough to buy more later like i loveee love this game so much 🩷🩷🩷🩷

and last of all 1. tales of the abyss

My Game Of The Fucking Year...... goddd where do i even begin. but seriously this game saved me cuz i was experiencing a dangerous level of brain damage from playing 4 ace attorney games in a row like shu takumi's bullshittery was POISONING me so to play abyss when i did was like Ohhh... Ohhh my god Thank You. but like really wow this game is really.... something very special to me. like i dont think the dungeon design is very great. and the combat was probably very good but this was my first tales game and they dont really tell you anything so i was fumbling through the entire thing. and i also played the 3ds port which has so many framedrops and the audio mixing on cutscene was practically non-existent. but the story and writing was so incredibly amazing that i could bear through all of this games weaknesses so easily. this sounds a bit crazy bc a video game shouldnt only have its strength in one aspect but im exaggerating a bit hereeee cuz like the game used its synopsis and in-game scenes to tell its story very well too and the pacing was amazing and solid throughout the game except a few parts in the middle where it faltered a bit, but it was still very strong!! but imo abyss' strength truly lies in its character writing like Oh my goodness this was really.. REALLY something special. there are so many characters and so many of them are so fleshed out and have so many nuances and compelling motivations and connections to one another and its like.. so crazy cuz they almost feel like. real people??? as in yes the game has its share of anime bullshittery and typical story tropes ofc it does, but yet at the same time so many of their reactions and responses to events both past and present felt very incredibly grounded?! this game is an incredible experience that was not only very heart-breaking but also veryyy very moving. and like honestly for a while i had been feeling worried that maybe i wont ever find a game so perfectly catered to me the way mm and ffix were again cuz like ive tried many many games but none of them were hitting the same way... but finally abyss arrived and its. just wow. i love it very very much 😭

(im going to make only sakamakis and this might be a bit short because im planning on making a story for each of them and also, im very lazy😭)

- their relationship kinda doesnt exists??

-like they knew each other because they see each other in school and mainly because Malorie is coming to sakamaki's house once in a while but thats pretty much all.

- shu thinks she is "annoyingly optimistic"

- but also whenever their paths cross at school or the sakamaki's house, he cant help but look at her in awe because she is so pretty. but will rather die than admit that.

-Malorie also finds his hair very pretty and wants to touch it but she knows damn well that shu is going to make fun of her for it.

- also they are not even friends so they dont really talk much and also because he finds her quite "troublesome"

Reiji

- ohh now this man can not understand if he hates or loves her company.

- when reiji first saw Malorie, he tought she was a "lady who needs improvements on her attitude"

- but one time he offered her a cup of tea that he made while she was waiting for kanato

-like shu, Malorie's relationship with Subaru kinda doesnt exists.

- i mean he sees her at school and whenever she comes to the mansion but thats pretty much all.

- but one time tough Subaru broke a vase accidently out of anger and Malorie saw that.

- so when she came the next day, she bought a vase for him

- he really appreciated that and is thankful to her since then

Chapter 17 - Ellie discovers the truth and a Birthday

“Joel just be careful you don’t take him too close to the steps” you call from your seat on the porch where you sat strumming Joel’s guitar. 

Joel had been trying to teach Patrick to walk for a few weeks now, “Our boy will be walking by his first birthday, just watch him” he called back. He was standing behind Patrick, holding the child’s tiny hands in his to hold him up as they tried making their way across the porch towards you. To put it simply Joel was an amazing father but you already knew this was the case from watching him with Ellie over the years. 

He picks up Patrick and takes the seat across from you, “What you playing?” He asks. 

“Nothing” you smile resting your arm and chin on the body of the guitar, “Didn’t sound like nothing” he props Patricks on his knees. 

“It was just something Ellie and I were learning together a while back” you sigh. Ellie had been visiting less and less often in the recent weeks.

“Play it for me” Joel says softly sitting back in his seat with Patrick. 

“All I can taste is this moment

And all I breathe is your life 

And sooner or later it’s over

I just don’t wanna miss you tonight 

And I don’t want the world to see me

“You’re finger pickings gotten pretty good.” Joel smiles at you  

“Ellie helped with the arrangement, you spoken to her recently?” You ask trying to sneak Ellie into conversation. 

He fell silent, you both seemed to know something was the matter.

“Are you ever going to tell her the truth?” You continue placing the guitar down, again he doesn’t say anything. You hated when he got like this, closed off, “She might understand why you did what you did.”  

“She wouldn’t understand. That girl went through hell to get to the fireflies, she would never understand” he says shortly but quietly, even when no one was around it was like Joel was worried the air would hear what he had done to protect Ellie that day. 

“They were going to kill her, she didn’t even know” you reply but Joel clearly doesn’t want to carry on this conversation announces its late and that Patrick should be going down for the night. That was the last time you discussed it before Ellie returned to the hospital. 

Joel had went out back early to wake Ellie for patrol, it was still relatively dark out and you were still in bed. He ran back into the house and to your bedroom. He looked around frantically as he filled his bag with different supplies and pulled on his usual coat, “She’s gone Y/N, she’s taken off for Salt Lake City, for that damn hospital” he announces. You begin to get out of bed to get ready to go with Joel but he says someone needs to stay with Patrick, he was right.

“Bring her back and you be safe, you hear me?” You say to your husband as he gently presses a kiss to your forehead.

“Ain’t I always?” he smiles as he leaves. Nothing good could come from them returning to the hospital. 

You pace the house for two days, keeping yourself busy with Patrick to try and take your mind off the idea of Ellie and Joel out there on their own. You hear the back garden gate open and you rush round back to Ellie’s shed expecting to find both of them but you only find Ellie. 

“Ellie, thank god! Where is Joel?” You ask as she flings her backpack on her bed, something in her body language made you stop. 

“He shouldn’t be much longer, I left ahead of him” She sits down on the bed, “Did you know?” She asks quietly, her head in her hands. You don’t know what to say, you try to speak, to act like you don’t know what she is talking about but Ellie see’s past it, she knew otherwise she would never have asked. 

“He told me after we got married… I was furious at him for telling me, for making me keep it from you but what he did, he did the right thing Ellie” 

“The right thing?” She repeats.

“Yes Ellie, I don’t want to argue but I would have done the same thing”.

“I am done with him, I said I would stay in Jackson but that’s it” she says lifting her head from her hands to look at you.

“And what about me and Patrick? Are you done with us too?” You can barely look at her. 

There is a long pause before Ellie speaks, “I don’t know”. 

You sit on the steps of the front porch waiting for Joel. When he see’s you sitting there, he knows you knew and stops in tracks. You rush towards him and enwrap him in your arms,  “Let get you inside, you must be exhausted” you say pulling back and brushing a bit of hair our of his gaze. Joel doesn’t say much while you cook dinner for the evening. When you sit down to eat together, you reach out across the table for this hand and give it a reassuring squeeze, “She will come round eventually”. 

“I don’t know about that darlin” he smiles softly appreciating the gesture but knowing better than to believe it. Once you finish eating you clear the table, as you go to take his empty plate you hover over him and place kiss and top of his. Joel lets out a sigh and holds the hand you placed on his shoulder to keep you close, pulling you round he sits you on his lap and holds you. 

“I wouldn’t change it you know, what I did” he says into your shoulder.

You pull back so that you are looking each other in the eyes, you notice Joel’s are tearing. Placing you hands on each side of his face, feeling the roughness of his beard below you kiss him and say “I know”. 

Ellie is true to her word when it comes to Joel, she avoids him at all opportunity, they no longer patrol together and she tries to avoid crossing paths in town. Every time they did bump into each other, Ellie’s coldness towards Joel was painful for anyone to watch the last couple months. The two who had laughed, protected and loved each other wouldn’t say two words. Ellie was still having difficult feelings when it came to you, because your part in this had only came about because of Joel, you would still speak in town but there was this dryness to every conversation. You are heading to work at the Tipsy Bison for the evening while Joel stayed home with Patrick when you spotted Ellie in town. 

“Ellie, do you have a second?” You ask her. She shrugs, “Sure”, here we go again with the stale conversation but you were going to really try. 

“I was just wondering if you would be coming to Patrick’s first Birthday? It’s not a big thing just us, Tommy, Maria, Molly and Jesse who is bringing Dina. I just thought with your friends coming, it would be nice if you did?” Ellie doesn’t say anything, “I know Patrick would love to see you too” you finish.

Ellie is fidgeting with the string of her hoodie while she mulled over her answer, all she could say is that she would “Think about it” and that was better than nothing. 

“I still cant believe this little man is a year old - and didn’t I tell you he would be walking?” Joel smiled. To say Patrick was completely walking would be an exaggeration but he was able to take a few steps on his own. It was a little bit like how he said Patrick’s first words was “Pa” but you hadn’t heard him. Molly, Tommy and Maria all arrived at the same time in the late afternoon. 

You were finishing up on the food and Patrick was sat with his Aunts and Uncle. That was when the door went, “I’ll get it” you called as Joel was still setting up the record player. You open the door to Jesse, Dina and to your surprise Ellie. You invite them all in smiling, Ellie hangs back behind Jesse and Dina looking slightly uncomfortable. “Thank you for coming Ellie, it means so much you’re here” you whisper to her.

“It would have looked too odd to the others if I hadn’t”” she says. When you and Ellie join the rest of the group, Joel looks like he saw a ghost but Ellie just gives everyone a general hello.

Patrick who was currently sat on the floor with Jesse, pulls himself up and begins taking small steps toward Ellie reaching out for her. 

“Look at you” Ellie smiles at him and picks up the growing child, “Walking all on your own, you’re getting so big”. 

Dina puts a paper crown she made for Patrick on his head during dinner, she made one similar for Ellie a few years back. Tommy had brought his camera, “lets get a photo of the Birthday boy”, he perches directly in front of Patrick who was sat in Joel’s lap. “Tell you what, why don’t we get one of the family” he suggested pointing at you and Ellie, he knew what he was doing here. Ellie began to protest but Tommy had a way of insisting that made it difficult to argue, both you and Ellie stand behind Joel. It takes Patrick reaching up for Ellie to make her smile enough to take the photo. Once dinner was over and Patrick was down for the night, you headed to your drinks trolley. 

“Well I think it’s about time we cracked open this one” you sigh picking up a bottle of whisky Joel had found a while back. 

“Y/N now that aint cheap stuff, if we” Joel begins but before he could finish Tommy has taken the bottle from your hand, “I think so too” he laughs and begins to pour everyone a drink. A few drinks later and the discussion turns to birthdays, “What is everyones best Birthday” asks Dina.

Tommy starts “One year before everything went to shit. I had always wanted to just get on a Harley and drive, don’t know where. So that’s what we did, Joel arranged it and we just took off. That was a great day” he smiled thinking back on it. Everyone else’s stories are a little less exciting and then it gets to Ellie. 

“Come on Ellie, everyone else has told us theirs” Dina egged her on. 

Ellie huffs slightly and takes another sip of her drink before starting her story, “I guess a couple of years ago” she begins, her fingers picking at the rim of her glass. “Joel had found this museum. It was full of these dinosaurs and this space exhibition. There was this replica shuttle we were able to climb into, it had the buttons, joystick, everything. He passed me this tape and told me to listen to it” she explained. Joel’s eyes had been on Ellie the entire time she had been speaking. “What was on the tape?” asked Jesse, Ellie looked up at him and then to Joel. “He had found the Apollo 11 landing on tape for me” she said quietly. Everyone was pretty quiet for a minute. 

“I’d love to hear that one time” Jesse smiled and then everyone went back to chatting. Ellie got up from the table, said she was feeling tired and that maybe she had drank too much before leaving for the night. It had been short lived but it had been a somewhat nice moment. You whisper to Joel and if he is okay once Ellie had left for the night. “Yep” he said his voice slightly cracking. 

“After those two stories, I think you are going to have to up your game for my next Birthday” you chirp and nudge him slightly in an attempt to lighten his mood. It didn’t really work.

-UNDEAD are barely kept together after eichis bullshit with rei already being a scapegoat of some of the issues. kogas a werewolf, and adonis and kaoru practice magic (adonis with more passive/healing magic and kaoru have buff/protection/glamours to attract cute people)

-fine is a holy based unit (eichi is a demon disguised as an angel, tori is an angel with yuzuru as a kind of prophet, and wataru of course is a fallen angel)

-akatsukis full of demons (:^) my inner akatsukiP and demon fucker tendencies...) and keitos the only one who knows about eichi truly being a demon due to childhood friends, however he wasnt expecting eichi to start ruining Everything and as a result ends up keeping quiet about knowing eichis short future as a result of his sudden terminal illness.

-ra*bits is fully of well, bunnies. mitsuru and nito have enough control they can turn into bunnies freely but tomoya sorta just randomly shifts in and out and hajime cant turn into one period (rip)

-2wink are trickster spirits with hinata being the one using magic the most and theyve become a target of ryuseitai because chiaki deemed them “a threat to peace” due to them being yknow...tricksters.

-RYUSEITAI IS DYING PLEASE HELP THEM. chiaki got his brain scrambled by eichis magic and as a result has a twisted sense of heroism (targetting “threats” aka people that are obviously not human, that causes issues for ra*bits and 2wink, “we as heroes will do not only good, but we will be remembered by whatever means we can, even if out of good intention we get painted villians” = “go ahead and beat people up maybe murder someone if you can get away with it as long as we’re remembered”) and after the first years refuse to listen, he brings them to eichi to “show him what hes trying to say” and they get their brains scrambled too (kanata is targetted after the brainwashing as a result which scares him off from ryuseitai until “its over”)

-switch is just trying to make it and tsumugi is cast away by both eichi and natsume shuns him bc 1. its natsume. 2. he was associated with “a true EVIL” and sora just wants to have fun but god damn it eichi

-valkyrie is the biggest victim of fine, being knocked down, having shu shunned even further than he was being an oddball by framing a few of ryuseitais acts onto him, and basically causing him to spiral into a depressed ball of hell who now barely leaves the handicrafts room much to mikas terror

-for convenience sake im saying they have dorms

-trickstar is the second hidden rebellion group against fine and because eichis so focused on knights, he barely notices they exist, which allows them to knock fine down a peg (sadly eichi simply pins this on knights and uses it as an excuse to further target them)

as a result of all the hell:

-keito really doesnt want to kill eichi, but he knows eichi dying is the only way everything will be fixed since hes done way too much damage for just graduation to fix anything. keitos aware however eichi will die soon and doesnt tell him that his sudden illness is terminal and simply gives him “medicine” (placebos, and he tells eichi he should stop jin from trying to send him to the hospital otherwise he may lose his place in the academy)

-kuro and tetoras relationship was basically severred after eichis brain scrambling, with tetora leaving the karate club to “focus on idol activities” and kuro catching tetora beating up a student (”TETSU WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!” ‘i did tell you i wanted to be like you, didn’t i?’ GOD angst,)

-lemme tell u it gets really angsty w leo and i blame my ka/gepro background for the story

-anzus so scared she doesnt wanna go back to her old academy because she was bullied so hard there (based off of the ensemble girls theory) but if it gets any worse her mom might send her back

-every first year not in ryuseitai had to witness their classmates go from eccentric, happy and fun loving to heartless people bent on destroying everything that may “disrupt” the peace so theres some angst fuel for you

-tetora and midori fight a LOT because tetora claims midori doesnt care enough about justice while midori claims everyones being way too brash and should tone it down (”I CARE ABOUT JUSTICE! DON’T YOU GUYS FEEL LIKE YOU’RE OVER DOING IT AT ALL?!” mainly after they chased kanata out) and midori is pretty much comparable to cron/a from soul ea/ter in terms of post-brainwashing)
