okay so i’ve had this written for ages and i’ve tried to expand on it and write more but it’s just never really happened so i might as well just post it. hope you enjoy! read on ao3 )

Stanley Uris considered himself a man of many talents. He could recite well detailed spiel about any bird at the drop of a hat, he had got washing his clothes down to a precise science so none of the colours would even dare to run, and he had to admit that he was quite flexible, although he wouldn’t ever admit that on a first date. Yet, despite his vehement efforts, despite his dedication and despite his might, he cannot get fucking glitter out of his hair. He’s tried washing it, brushing it, even vacuuming it once with Eddie’s careful guidance. He dreads the days when it is inexplicably part of his routine, and he prays and prays and prays that he’ll be able to get it out of his curly locks come bedtime.

He never fucking does, though.

And so, Stan was in a foul mood as he pulled up in the parking lot this morning at precisely five minutes to seven. As usual, he was the second car in the lot and he took the time to count the binders on his passenger seat again before he gathered them in his arms, to make sure he had replied to any emails he had to and ran over his lesson plans in his head before stepping out of the car and making his way towards the staff entrance of the small elementary school.

Just as he had expected, Ben was sat behind his desk at the main office, looking bleary eyed as he sipped at his coffee and flipped through papers that Stan would ask about if it wasn’t so early in the morning and if Ben didn’t look so tired. Stan threw him a smile and waved at him the best he could with his arms full, a wave of fondness washing over him as Ben offered him a bright smile in spite of his fatigue, and he started his trek along the red bricked corridor to his classroom.

Stan had started teaching just four years ago, starting off with Kindergarten kids at Derry Elementary before moving to the fifth grade the year after, and he’s stayed there ever since. His psychology degree was supposed to lead Stan into the world of therapy, yet instead, he got pulled into early years development, which ultimately led to him training to be a teacher. His father was more than displeased at sudden change in career choice, hoping his son would be a hotshot shrink in no time, but Donald Uris had to admit that it was nice to have Stan close to home. He also had to admit that Stan was good at his job.

The kids loved him. They giggled at his sarcastic remarks, groaned at him whenever he set homework and were unafraid to come to him with their 10-year-old problems, seeking his fair judgement and level headed advice. Yes, Stan Uris loved his kids dearly, he even admitted to shedding a tear here and there when his classes finally left for middle school, and he’d be damned if they weren’t going to grow up in a safe and loving place. The thought of packing it in and walking the career path his parents had hoped he would pave after college was a tempting one when he came home with stack after stack of homework sheets and essays and school books, but the way the kids eyes would light up when they saw his neatly written praise on their last homework assignment was more than enough to quash the idea. In short, Stan loved his class, and his class loved him.

Stan pushed open his classroom door with his shoulder and blindly searched the cold wall with nimble fingers until they settle on the light switch, and he flooded the room with the white, artificial glare of the ceiling lights. He walked the well known path to his desk at the front of the room, reaching down to pick up a stray pencil by his chair after he set his folders down on the clutter free table. He took pride in his classroom, keeping it clean and tidy at all times. An untidy working space means an untidy mind, his mother had always told him, and he very much believed it to be true.

Over the summer, he had spent a full day painting new displays on the walls, changing the colour scheme of the room from light yellow to sky blue, penning sparrows onto the walls with help from Richie. All of his pencils had been sharpened, papers organised, glue sticks neatly stacked and reading books tidily arranged on shelves.

“You’re like Mary Poppins when she does all that clicky shit.” Richie had astutely commented, trying to snap his fingers for added effect, but he somehow ended up punching himself in the face.

Stan wished Richie took the same pride in his own classroom instead of giving Stan shit for doing so himself. Richie was content to replace the framed picture of Bill Nye above his desk with an updated snap and buy a new board pen every year. He loved his friend dearly, but he often wonders how he even became qualified to teach, considering he was a health hazard on legs, always tripping over chair legs or barely skimming the children’s faces when he got too animated with his hand movements. Stan had been teaching for a year longer than Richie had but he had known Richie all of his life. In fact, Stan likes to credit himself as the guiding force for getting him off his ass and into the workforce.

It had been a Sunday, when they were both Juniors at UCLA, and Stan was putting the finishing touches to his project for his Primary Education class. He was sat cross legged on the floor of his cramped apartment, blasting Abba, the ground in front of him covered in newspaper as he dabbed his project delicately with his one dollar paintbrush and paint. Everything was peaceful in the world of Stan, that was, until Richie bounded through the door in a whirlwind of neon colours and unruly hair, already speaking at one hundred miles per hour.

“Stanley the Manley, you’ll never believe what the fuck just happened. So i’m sat there, enjoying my weekly Dorito date with that weird guy down the street and- what the flippity fuck is that?”

Stan looked up at him, carefully setting his brush down on the newspaper and moving curls out of his eyes, following Richie’s gaze down to his project, standing sturdily in front of Stan.

“It’s homework.” Stan said, stretching his stiff arms above his head. “It’s a fish.”

Before he knew it, Richie was kneeling on the floor next to Stan, eye to eye with his papier-mache creation, staring it out with trepidation in his gaze.

“So I’ve gotta do a shit ton of consumer research just to have the chance to grace the airwaves, but all you’ve gotta do is make a fish?” Richie whined, sitting back on his heels and pouting at Stan. He reached out his hand to touch, but Stan quickly swatted it away before leaning back down to apply another coat of purple paint to his aquatic masterpiece.

“If you’re that bothered, why don’t you train to become a teacher, Trashmouth.” Stan chastised, ignoring the ‘humph’ that escaped Richie’s as he watched him paint. Stan never actually expected him to do it. He had turned up at Stan’s door almost a year to the day later, holding a handmade dog, wearing a bowtie and donning a kippah on over its curly ears. Stan had answered the door with a hand on his hip, eyebrow raised. Richie had only grinned, his cheeks turning red with the force of him holding back a laugh at his own joke.

“It’s a Cocker Staniel.”

Stan slammed the door in his face.

And now here they were, almost five years later, Richie running late as usual and Stan dreading the looming presence of glitter on his Thursday morning.

Parent-Teacher conferences were the bane of Stan’s existence. He held two every year, one in October while the kids were relatively new in the class and one later on in the year, normally before they left. Usually, the parents didn’t care at all or seemingly cared too much, berating Stan for things as trivial as how he worded homework sheets to the way he dressed. The sheer stress of such things meant that Stan spent the short hour between school ended and his first appointment with Eddie, the school nurse, drinking juice boxes with an ice pack held securely to his head while they chatted aimlessly and watched reruns of Judge Judy on the room’s shitty TV set. This year, though, was going to be the first time he’d handle the parents smoothly and professionally, and he certainly wasn’t going to have a breakdown in his store cupboard afterwards. No way.

He heaved in a sigh, revelling in the slight burn of his lungs as he drank in the air. It was getting closer to half past now, and Stan finally started to get into gear, setting up for the day, refusing to look at the offending vials of metallic crap until he had to. It was 8:55 when Richie finally pulled up outside, fifteen minutes later than he usually was, and he didn’t even afford himself the luxury of mithering Stan as he sprinted down the corridor, hands full of boxes and slammed his classroom door behind him. Richard Tozier was well suited to be a second grade teacher, Stan thought, considering he was a second grader himself.

He opened his door at 8:59, only just making it back to his desk before the whiny ring of the school bell flooded his ears and children started to walk through the door, unbuttoning their coats as they bid him good morning, groaning as they saw what Stan had written on the whiteboard, and Stan couldn’t help but smirk. If they were going to destroy his classroom and his life with pipe cleaners and glitter glue, he was going to make their brains explode with maths.

Stan was sticky by the time 4:30 rolled by. In an effort to make his class a bit more cheerful, he had allowed them to make name tags for their books and work so their parents could easily identify them that evening. He hadn’t, however, thought it was such a good idea when Timothy Jones had walked into him with a full pot of PVA glue, subsequently spilling it down his neatly pressed chinos, covering them in a shiny, brown stain that was going to be a bitch to get out. He couldn’t possibly greet parents looking like there had been an oil spill on his trousers, so in a last resort to gain some semblance of put togetherness, he went knocking on Richie’s door.

“Woah there Stanley,” he grinned as he cut what looked like a melted dinosaur out of a piece of blue card, adding it to a pile of similarly drawn jurassic creatures. “Looks like someone didn’t make it to the can in time. Say, I didn’t know you were into watersports.”

Stan didn’t dignify him with a response, instead sighing and muttering a halfhearted ‘Beep Beep’. “I don’t suppose you’ve got any pants, have you?”

Stan should have known to fear the worse as Richie’s face lighted up with mirth and he spoke to Stan with his Southern Belle drawl.

“Well, Sir, I surely surely do.”

And that’s how Stan ended up sat behind his desk, listening to parents talk about their kids as if they were the only ones on the planet, wearing a pair of hot pink yoga pants that barely fitted him, never mind Richie.

(“Where the fuck did you get these?” “They’re Eddie Spaghetti’s. I-” “Never mind, I’d rather not know.”)

He nodded empathetically as they talked about their children, resisted the urge to roll his eyes as they told him how to do his job, but under no circumstances did he stand up from the table. Propriety be damned, he didn’t want to be fired for public indecency. He was almost done at five minutes to six, his schedule closely adhered to, and if all went well, he’d be in bed by seven. He only had one appointment left, and he let himself relax in his chair, straightening his papers and ticking off names as he waited.

Five minutes passed. And then ten. And then fifteen. It was quarter past six, and he was still waiting for his last appointment to turn up. A pang of annoyance gnawed at Stan. He had been preparing for this for over a month and the parents didn’t even have the decency to listen to him talk about their own kids, for God’s sake. Huffing, he started to pack away, stuffing sheets back into their binders when a ball of emerald and auburn and brown came charging through the door with a small boy in tow.

“I’m so s-sorry, I thought Noah’s mother was coming instead.” the man groaned, panting as he ran a hand through his son’s hair.

He quickly caught his breath and made his way in front of Stan, offering him his hand to shake. If Stan wasn’t so annoyed, he would have noticed the way his blue eyes sparkled or the warmth of his touch or the way his mouth quirked as he spoke. But Stan was irritated, so instead he shook the man’s hand and refused to look at him as he pulled his sheets back out. Stan quickly realised, though, that Noah was stood next to his father, grinning up at Stan.

He quickly softened, smiling back at the boy. Noah was a boisterous member of his class, yes, but he was polite and was quiet when Stan needed him to be and often had an amusing anecdote about his Aunt Bev and Uncle Georgie. Noah Phillips-Denbrough was a good kid, and Stan liked him very much.

“Hey buddy.” he greeted as Noah waved back, his grin widening as he shot back an exuberant ‘hi!’, almost shaking as he gripped to his father’s arm.

Looking at the pair now, Stan could obviously see the family ties. He had had a few dealings with Audra Phillips, and from what Stan could gather, she was a reserved woman who only seemed to speak when she was spoken to, quite unlike her son, who was rowdy to say the least. While Noah had inherited his mother’s swarthy skin and tightly coiled locks, it was easy to see his father in him. Their eyes both lit up in the same carefree way when Stan looked at them and the smile on their faces seemed to be permanent. That, and the blue hue of their eyes were almost identical. While Stan knew divorce often made kids shrink into themselves, Noah had done anything but, and he thinks Mr. Denbrough had been part of the reason why.

“Sorry we’re so late, Mr Uris.” Noah beamed, no evidence of regret traceable on his face, and Stan’s grin involuntarily widened.

“Don’t worry about it Noah.” he said, throwing him a wink that made the young boy dissolve into giggles. “Hey, why don’t you go and finish your drawing from today while I chat to your dad?” he suggested, and Noah didn’t have to be asked twice before he was sitting at one of the rickety desks and scribbling away.

Stan turned his attention back to the man in front of him, cutting him off with a wave of his hand as he tried to speak again, probably to apologise again. “Why don’t we get started, Mr Denbrough.”

“Bill, please.” he insisted, and the smile on his face had Stan repressing a blush.

“Okay then, Bill,” Stan didn’t miss the man’s chuckle, “Let’s talk about Noah’s progress so far.”

In all fairness to Stan, he was completely professional from there on in, only making eye contact when appropriate, never letting himself stray from the topic of Bill’s son, and he certainly didn’t let himself get excited when Bill pushed the sleeves of his dress shirt up to his elbows. Stanley Uris was a paragon of a teacher, answering questions thoughtfully and easily. So what if Bill’s appointment lasted twenty minutes longer than it should have, it’s not like Stan was counting.

It went so well, however, that Stan had ignored one huge, almighty, dirty big fat flaw. He had completely forgotten that nothing good ever happens to him, and sooner or later, it was all going to go tits up. Fortunately, he didn’t have to wait long for it to happen.

“Thanks a lot for seeing us, Mr Uris.” Bill had a smile on his face and his voice was dripping with an appreciation that had Stan blushing.

Stan waved his hand in front of him, turning to smile at Noah, who was once again glued to Bill’s side. “Thank you guys for coming.” He shot him a small wink, making the boy beam up at him.

When he turned back to Bill, there was a look clouding his piercing eyes that Stan couldn’t quite decipher, yet it made the warmth on his cheeks deepen further, and before he knew it, Bill was standing out of his chair, arm out in front of him to shake, and Stan was following suit.

He only realised what a huge fuck up it was when Noah burst into fits of giggles.

“Mr. Uris why are your pants pink?” he squeaked out in between laughs, clutching onto Bill’s arm to hold himself up.

Stan’s cheeks burned now, and he was pretty sure you could see him in the dark with the intensity of his blush. He glanced at Bill out of the corner of his eye, surprised to find that his cheeks were the colour of his pants, and he didn’t miss the way his eyes ran over Stan’s somewhat scantily clad legs.

He cleared his throat, the deep bass of his chuckle reverberating in Stan’s chest as he pushed a stray strand of auburn hair from his eyes. “The pink suits you.”

All Stan could do was limply shake the man’s hand, squeak out a pathetic goodbye and usher the pair hastily from the room.

He let his head fall with a thunk against the pink painted door as he shut it closed behind them. Stan had prided himself on keeping himself composed for the past five years, no matter how hard it was. He had people complain about him when his shirt sleeves were too short or when the amount of time designated to reading was deemed ‘questionable’. The way Stan was feeling now had to stop. Yes, he’d had crushes before, but never on a parent. It was hard enough for him being gay in Derry, it was even harder to try to be so and teach at the same time. The last thing he needed was a silly schoolboy crush to come along and wreck the order he’d created.

So, Stan did what he usually did when he’s had, what he’d consider, a stressful day: go home, eat a shit ton of ice cream and watch Say Yes To The Dress until his eyes melt.

Thank God it’s Friday.

Religion

When I turned thirty I didn’t become an adult. I became a walking pathology. I became questions on a sheet at a doctor’s office profiling me to find out what kind of sorry, sad, unhealthy bastard I was.

Smoker? Yes, since 1994

Gravitas? 2 live births, 1 miscarriage

Weight? Obese

And I did as I was supposed to, yearly check up to tell me I was still fat and should still quit smoking. But it was all good because I was young and healthy. Mostly.

Thirty five.

God, doc, you know, sometimes I feel bad. School pressures family pressures life pressures it’s all getting me down. Boom- you’re depressed, take these pills and you’ll feel better.

And so I did. And they didn’t. So I went to a new doctor who said that the light at the end of the tunnel was a different color and shape because I was on the depression metro and I needed to be on the Bi-Polar Express. It didn’t matter to me so long as I got help.

I joined the church of psychopathy and I found a religion.

A religion is something you do every day. People say 'I do this religiously' meaning their dishes or their laundry or their hair and make-up. Few of them acknowledge the religiosity of being sane. For some people they call it a regimen. Some just call it their meds. Some consider the morning ritual of a strong anti-psychotic and a hot cup of coffee to be an act of communion. Body of mental health, blood of mental health. Bless you child. There are those who don't know and will never know the importance of this ritual. They won't know about the ecstasy of mania, the whipping thoughts, the frenzy of action, the high you feel. The euphoria. Like being lifted higher and higher, there is no wrong, there is only joy and happiness and the knowledge that nothing can go wrong. They don’t know the bliss of cleaning They won't know the agony of the crash. The down cycle. The depression. The crushing feeling of doom, of being removed from the grace of the mania and left to rot in the bowels of a personal hell devised by one's own mind. Every terrible thought, every trespass that may happen. The only way to escape is sleep, is silence. The only way to move is slowly and the only hope is in a bottle with a childproof cap. Sometimes that hope centers on the question of just how many one may need to take to end this forsaken suffering. But then the mania comes again and the depression fades like a bad dream. Nothing could be wrong! The holy communion of the blue pill white pill pink pill- a rainbow of pills, try the one that fits you best, the one you believe in- that communion of that solid small bit of pharmaceutical devotion laid on the tongue so carefully. With reverence. And the mouthful of coffee tea water- does it really matter- blends the two together in a whole. Transubstantiation happens somewhere between the glottis and the gullet. The body and blood of sanity fill you in this act of devotion, this act of pure faith. How do we know the drugs work? Even the doctor who lays them in your hand and bids you peace and wellbeing doesn't know exactly how they affect the brain. No, it's an act of faith, this religious folly that brings the pill to the mouth. It's the hope of sanity. The hope that a religious act will keep one stable and not bouncing toward a high or sinking to a low. An even keel, guidance for this world we're in and a solid, tangible lifeline to keep us settled and solid and content to be in this world we are in. A religion is something you do every day. Some people just have to work harder than others at their faith.

And no one gets out without their faith being tested because when the mind is steady and even then the body begins to fail.

Ten years later and you begin to sweat. Not a little, no, a torrent. You sweat and can’t breathe and turn red and people wonder what is wrong with you and if it’s because you’re obese and then one day you chalk it up to weather and nerves and leave it be. But then you start crying. You start crying at cats that slip and fall and dogs with three legs and children who begin to cry and you cry at the poetry of a crushed flower and the profound grief to be had in a reader board that has lost a letter so it says Taco Bell Live Ma. Yeah, Taco Bell, Ma would like to live.

These kinds of tears can’t be right so you go to the shrink to say the holy Eucharist might not be so holy anymore and the therapist grills you and then laughs in your face. You don’t need an old priest or a young priest and you don’t need different antipsychotics. Get thee to the OB/GYN.

Oh yes, you’re not mental, you’re menopausal, which you might have actually assumed if you were not already fighting a daily battle with sanity as it was. Blue pill pink pill white pill, now more pills. And if the pills don’t work we’ll carve it out of you because you’re done breeding, done being a woman. You don’t need it and you know now-days we just pull it right out the vagina. It’s the most brutal inside-out circumcision invented.

But you’ll feel better. Millions of women suffer mental illness, every menstruater hits menopause. Medicine and surgery, medicine and surgery, bow to the religion of health.

What do you mean you can’t bow because your skeleton is broken?

Spondylolisthesis degenerative disk disorder stenosis osteoarthritis. So your back hurts, right?

Sure, except no.

Smoker? No, I quit in May after 20 years.

Gravitas? 2 births, 1 miscarriage, one foster child not of my body but of my heart (that doesn’t count on an ob/gyn chart)

Weight? Obese…and honey that’s not going to change because I’ve been fat and happy about it since the days I was well within the BMI and my daddy told me I was built like a brick shithouse and destined to be a linebacker. Since my mother pointed out at every opportunity that I had a little tummy as she fed me pie nightly. Since my grandma simultaneously taught me to bake what tasted the best and then told me my bottom was too round for boys to like me and I should learn to dance. I like my body. I am soft and my kids like to hug me and sleep on me. I’m good for children and I fit perfectly against my husband in bed. Do I wish I was skinny? Yes, but only because I could get cute clothes in a store that didn’t cost 5 dollars more. It’s not for looks or health, it’s about money. Money and faith.

So I’m forty and I’m a pathology. I’m a walking sickness, mentally and physically. I have my disabled placard to put in my window so I can walk to the shop where I can’t find clothes to fit and can only, on a good day, manage to walk slowly for 20 minutes and then give up and come home.

Home to the shrine where I have another ritual. A darker, more secret ritual.

Blessed is the Hydrocodone that stills my pain. Blessed is the Robaxin that calms my muscles. Blessed is it Fentanyl that gives me some long term relief.

It’s the hope of a pain free night just as much at the daytime pills give you hope for sanity.

The church of pharmacology is the church of hope. And sometimes that hope is all I have to get me to the next day.

A religion is something you do every day. Some people just have to work harder than others at their faith

I think I have mentiones this before, that during my down time at the office I draw at my desk. Well after posting Love Eternal I couldn't get the desire to draw Shiro and Keith dancing out of my head. It's honestly the first time I have wanted to draw something from my own fic, so I knew I had something special, at least in my eyes.

I don't remember exactly when I started going down the rabbit hole of art YouTube, but I remember binging a lot of Moriah Elizabeth's videos, mainly dollar store makeover and art things to do when your bored; when I saw she made her own pins and charms. And what did she use? Shrinky Dinks aka shrink plastic. I was absolutely floored when I heard Shrinky Dinks because I totally remembered these from when I was a kid, but back then (this could have been just my local shops) Shrinky Dinks were just kits with stencils, colored pencils,etc and not just single sheets.

After watching her videos I searched on YouTube and saw a bunch more and went; "yes, I can make my own pins/charms! Have things of my ocs? Hells yeah!" And thanks to Moriah's videos I knew the size of paper I would need for the proper size and started tearing my scrap paper at my office to said proportion.

I set about doing a couple designs and watching a few more videos on what worked best on the plastic while keeping in mind that the colors would desaturate and become quite dark. I enjoy using alcohol markers so I wanted to try them but most of the research I did said that Sharpies were the best suited, so why not both?

Eevee was done with my alcohol markers and Hythlodaeus was done with the Sharpies. Notice some of the muddiness? I didn't figure this out till later, but that was my fine liner basically getting reactivated by the inks.

Other little designs for pins/charms got done as well, this time of my avatar/oc Luscia and what quickly became an otp for, Emet-selch and Hythlodaeus from FFXIV

And while I knew what these would be for (sorta) I couldn't help but think "how big could I go with the shrink plastic" So I did a chibi of my oc Sora as well.

Of course with that thought also came "can I make a standee with the shrink plastic". This required more research and shockingly only 2 videos popped up; one for the shrink plastic and the other for resin. The resin actually intrigued me and since I was lucky enough to get Nerdecrafter's Not Another Crap Kit I had a small thing of UV resin. The video had used 2 part resin, would UV resin work?

Yes, yes it does. Though I did make an error in doing this which I'll talk about next time. But I used this block of wood as the base because I wanted to test out a flower mold, but also because I had an interesting idea and if it worked I would use it for another project I started back in 2021.

But this was where I really amazed myself. It was only March and I had done this much? I was longing to try new materials and new techniques? I hadn't felt this way in a long time and I was more than excited to see where I would go.

And the reason has everything to do with why blister packaging sucks so much.

See, the reason why blister packaging, or clamshell packaging is so annoying to open is because it’s designed as a theft deterrent device of sorts.

For retailers, shoplifting is a legitimate concern. Last year, the National Retail Federation found that theft, fraud, and other losses caused by retail shrinkage cost the industry more than $50 billion dollars in 2018 alone.

Obviously, retailers are always looking for ways to prevent shoplifting and other forms of shrinkage, and while putting cameras and RFID sensors everywhere is fairly effective, a more old-school approach that is commonly seen today involves making the packaging really annoying.

Lots of examples of this dynamic exist. For example, part of the reason why the record industry tried making longboxes the primary receptacle for compact discs, despite the size being unnecessary, is that it made the discs harder to steal.

There are a few ways to prevent things from being stolen from a store, but the most notable include making a package an unwieldy size, making it hard to hold onto, and making it hard to open without a lot of work.

Blister packaging does all of these things. It’s harder to shove in your pocket, you need tools to open the packages up, and if it’s been tampered with, it’s obvious.

The problem is that what makes something hard to steal also makes it a challenge to open for legitimate customers. It turns a normal consumer experience into something hostile. And it creates an opportunity for someone to disrupt the status quo.

This is where Amazon comes in. There are a lot of things that one can criticize Amazon for, but one of those things is not the concept of “frustration-free” packaging. Introduced way back in 2007, the company pioneered the idea that, if you’re getting a packaged shipped to your home in a box anyway, there is no need for the consumer-hostile packaging. In fact, they make it easy to open up the thing you just bought in many cases.

Recently, the company has been doubling down on this idea, pushing the companies that sell products through the service—most of the global economy, essentially—to follow its lead.

“At Amazon, it’s our mission to be the world’s most customer-centric company, and we continue to raise the bar by providing customers with what they want: minimal, protective and functional packaging,” the company stated in a document acquired by Packaging World.

Now, there are concerns about waste and sustainability driving some of Amazon’s work on this issue, but not to be lost is the raison d’être for this effort in the first place: the brick-and-mortar retail industry’s natural reliance on frustrating packaging design. Amazon turned a longstanding frustration that consumers had with brick-and-mortar stores into a competitive advantage.

Granted, they have their own issues with theft—porch pirates have been enough of an issue that Amazon has invested heavily in a home security camera business in part to help track such theft.

Amazon is a controversial company that uses controversial tactics and controversial means to get ahead. But at least they make it easier to open up the things we bought … right?

Blister packaging is annoying, it potentially creates threats of injuries, and thanks to Amazon, it might actually encourage people to use online shopping over brick-and-mortar retail.

But these things may not even be the worst elements of blister packaging. In truth, it might be the fact that it’s very tough to recycle.

There are a few reasons for this. For one, many blister packs don’t have their plastic resin identifier code labeled on the packaging, which makes it difficult for recyclers to figure out what it is. For another, the type of plastic used has a bad chemical composition for recycling, which makes it a bad idea to put in the bin.

“You absolutely want to make sure that you never ever put PVC into your recycling bin,” said Steve Alexander of the Association of Plastics Recyclers, in comments to The New York Times last year.

The problems with recycling have helped encourage the creation of alternatives. One of those alternatives is called PulpWorks. Rather than covering the object in hard-to-bust-open plastic, the design of the packaging purposely leaves a portion of the object visible, while surrounding the object with biodegradable materials of the kind used in many egg cartons. It solves the theft-risk problem through design, not simply by covering the whole thing with a non-reusable plastic shell.

Paul Tasner, the co-inventor of the product, noted to The Wall Street Journal in 2014 that the design was inspired in part by irony.

“My wife and I were always complaining about opening those things and then one day she brought home the tool to seemingly end all of that difficulty,” Tasner told the paper. “It was a special set of shears designed specifically for safely cutting open blister packs and clam shells. However, in a completely absurd twist, the shears were actually packaged in a blister pack.”

Plastics have played a key role in the modern world we have today, in ways big and small. But really to solve the intertwined problems of packaging and theft, we need more clever thinkers—so that the next time a poor kid gets a Tiger Electronics game, they can actually open up the box.

The Gecko Trademark has been around since 1979. I met my partner Vik Watumull at the Action Sports Show in Long Beach, Ca in 1986. Vik had a small booth in the back and was showing a brand called Run Wild Hawaii. He had shorts and tees with Whales with Sunglasses, Cockroaches with sunglasses and Geckos with sunglasses. I took a sample line from Vik and started selling it to surf shops up and down the coast. Two of my first accounts were Wise Surf Shop in San Francisco and Arrow Surf and Sport in Santa Cruz. This was back when hard core Nor Cal Surf shops were just selling black wetsuits and boards. Apparel was just starting to come into the picture. Our stuff was much brighter and more fun than any other product in the stores. The Whales and the Cockroaches were selling but the Geckos were outselling everything. We decided to focus on the Geckos and built the brand around them. We expanded to many stores throughout California and eventually across the entire US. In the early days when our stuff sold out I would ask Vik for new product. Vik said that in Hawaii they had new customers every week getting off the planes. The Hawaiian product didn’t change as often as the mainland product. I let him know that our mainland business was different. We had the same customers seeing our product and we had to keep updating it for them.Our mainland Gecko line became more branded and our Hawaiian Gecko brand catered more towards tourists. Our bright colors and original hand drawn patterns appealed to a wide audience not just by the beach but inland and inner-city as well.We had a lot of success with the brand. Our biggest success however had to be our Beach Pants in the early 90s. We were selling about 60,000 pair a week during the back to school season in 1991 and 1992. You might say they were the original jogger. The beach pant started with weight lifters in Venice Beach in the late 80s and early 90s. MC hammer also had his version in the late 80s and early 90s. Our pants were bright and fun and the people loved the fit. They were originally made out of 100% cotton sheeting. They were printed in LA and sewn in Visalia. We were able to turn very quickly and were able to capitalize on the trend!We had a great 25 year run with the brand doing over $150,000,000 in sales. Our best single year was about $28,000,000.The retail landscape begin to change in about 2006. Many retailers started doing direct to retail licenses. The floor space in large retailers for smaller brands like us began to shrink. Everyone was focusing their dollars and floor space on private label.In 2009 we decided to scale back and work on other projects. We continued to ship Gecko but in a much smaller way. I really missed the brand. My kids who are now 33, 26 and 24 had been after me for years to bring it back. Finally in 2018 I reached out to Urban Outfitters with some original tee shirt art from 1989 to 1992. I took pics of the tees on a longboard in my backyard and sent it to them. I knew the timing was right. They said they dug it and we got restarted with them on the mainland.We have been doing popups and trade shows and are having a great time bring Gecko Hawaii back. We are selling urban Outfitters and other specialty stores and shops across the US.We have also shipped streetwear stores like 5 Star and others in Japan and surf shops there as well. We opened up Simons Womens in Canada and Dollskill at the last Pool Trade show in Vegas. Our brand is all about fun. The girls are really digging our pants and crop tops. We plan to expand our woman offerings this time around. We also just came out with some rad Fanny/Shoulder packs. All of the retailers mentioned above are bringing them in!We have also found a new avenue for sales with second hand stores. We were told by one of our Customers Flashbacks in san Diego that they can’t keep our vintage pieces in the store. The minute they come in they sell out. .

Cenjo drabble: Not Even Death

Cen rolled his eyes at the idea of going to a mall but somehow, someway, Shojo convinced him to come along with her. As he sat outside the fitting room with the other boyfriends he found himself pondering his existence and how he got here. His arms folded as he stared ahead, trying not to shoot a round of bullets into the speakers above him playing that godawful pop music from five years ago. The only thing that kept him from doing that was the fact that Shojo had picked out a couple of really cute dresses and bikinis. Really cute dresses and bikinis.

One outfit after another, Cen found his spirits improving as Shojo modeled for him. A few other guys sitting by him smiled too and Cen scowled at them until they adverted their eyes. Shojo certainly was having fun, twirling in her itsy bitsy polka dot bikini for her man.

After a good hour of shenanigans, Shojo went to the cashier to pay while Cen stood at the doors of the department store. There was a speaker on the ceiling to his left hand side. He watched Shojo waiting patiently in line behind some old broad who wanted to pay in cash. He looked up at the speaker. It must be destroyed.

“Do you have a rewards card?” the cashier asked. “No but that’s ok-” CRASH.

All eyes were on Cen, who was currently on the ceiling, and the speaker, which was currently on the floor. Cen froze for a moment, jumped down to the floor, brushed off his shoulders, and walked out like nothing happened.

“Here’s an extra hundred,” Shojo said to the cashier with a forced smile, passing her a 100 dollar bill. “Sorry about that.”

Shojo finally caught up to Cen and smacked his arm with the force of a light breeze. She did look rather pissed but Cen enjoyed her like that anyway.

“Cen, what the hell is wrong with you??” she scolded. The Chronan shrugged. “You’re welcome.” “Wha- What are you talking abou-” “The evil’s been defeated. You’re welcome.”

Shojo facepalmed. Cen smirked. But her anger with him dissipated easily once he put his arm around her shoulders as they walked to the car. They had to park fairly far from the entrance but they enjoyed the stroll, Shojo already tempting Cen with the idea of a pool party (and the party would only be the two of them). The car was a few meters away when a man standing by another car reached out and grabbed Shojo’s arm, pulling her to him and placing a gun at her head. She barely had time to gasp, dropping her shopping bag and freezing in fear.

“Money. Now,” was all the man said, glaring at Cen through his mask. Cen, however, looked unfazed.

“You picked the wrong fucker, motherfucker,” he spat, rolling up his sleeve.

The man cocked his gun and shoved it into Shojo’s temple, making her whimper.

“You want her dead? Give me your fucking mon-”

Cen had no patience for such a scumbag and grabbed the man’s arm to get the gun away from him. The gun shot off once into the ground and once into the air before Cen kneed him in the gut and slammed his elbow into the back of the man’s neck. The man laid down out cold while Cen disarmed the remaining bullets, letting them fall to the ground.

“Stupid asshole tryin’ to-” “C.. Cen..” “You alright, Sho-”

Shojo stood on shaking legs with her hand over her stomach, blood dripping over her fingers and staining her shirt. All the world stopped as Cen stared in disbelief, his heart freezing at the sight of Shojo with a bullet through her body. He jumped to her to catch her before she fell to the concrete, her face already pale and her eyes watering.

“Fuck. Shit. Fuck,” he cursed, holding her face in his hand. “Shojo, look at me, okay? Just look at me and stay awake. You’re gonna be okay.”

Shojo’s tears slid down into her hair silently, her eyes unfocused and her breathing labored. “Cen.. I can’t... I can’t feel.. I feel cold..” she whimpered, her face white as a sheet.

Cen pulled her into his arms and ran to the car, placing her in the passenger seat before taking off to get her back home as quickly as possible. Her blood on his hands made the steering wheel slippery as he drove with the pedal to the floor.

“NATHAN!!” Cen screamed as he burst into the door, splintering it in the process. Shojo was barely breathing, her skin cold and her blood still dripping from her torso.

“Calm down I’m here,” Nathan grumbled, getting up from the couch with an annoyed sigh. “Let’s get this over with. I don’t know why you’re so upset.”

Cen ignored Nathan and that comment as he laid Shojo down on the couch in Nathan’s place.

“Is she dead yet?” Nathan asked, no emotion in his voice.

“Would you please have an ounce of sympathy for once you fucking-” Cen put his fingers to Shojo’s neck and found no pulse. He swallowed hard, refusing to show any kind of sadness around Nathan. “Yep. She’s dead. Knock yourself out,” he said, getting up and heading to the kitchen to find a drink. “And please, do actually knock yourself out.”

“You know, I don’t have to bring her back.”

Cen found a bottle of whiskey, cracked it open with his teeth, and drank straight from the bottle.

Nathan decided not to respond. He pressed a knife into his palm until he saw his own blood and held his hand over Shojo’s mouth to let his blood drip down into her throat. Cen stayed in the kitchen until Nathan had finished, wrapping up his hand and heading for the door.

“Give it ten minutes or so,” he suggested. “And don’t move her until she’s fully healed or you’ll fuck up her spine more than you already did.” Cen shot him a dirty look that Nathan, in turn, ignored as he left the house, leaving Cen alone with his dead girlfriend.

He came back over to Shojo and fixed the pillow under her head, brushing her hair from her eyes. Some drops of Nathan’s blood were left on her chin. He ran a washcloth under some warm water and cleaned up any excess blood from her face and body, seeing the hole in her stomach shrinking as Nathan’s blood worked its magic. She was still cold to the touch. She said she felt cold. She would be cold when she woke up. Cen grabbed a spare blanket from the bedroom and laid it over her. He took another long swig from his bottle and sat down on the floor beside her, waiting. Had it been five minutes already? Was it longer than ten? He stared ahead of him, not really looking at anything.

This wasn’t the first time she died and, knowing her, it wouldn’t be the last. Then why was he feeling so utterly alone? It was as if the true weight of how fragile she was finally sunk in through his thick skull. He reached behind him to hold her hand. And he waited. Her hand was like ice. It wasn’t even thirty minutes ago when he had his arm around her, smiling at her future plans to throw them a private pool party. Her smile was always so warm. He rubbed his thumb over her cold hand. Had it been ten minutes yet? Did Nathan lie to him? He didn’t want to check for a pulse again, not wanting to feel the absence of one on her neck. He never wanted to feel, or not feel that again. His whiskey was almost gone.

Then, finally, Shojo inhaled.

“Sho? Shojo??” he called to her, moving to his knees to look down at her. He still held her hand and felt her weak fingers move to hold his hand back. The color came back into her cheeks and her eyes opened.

“C.. Cen?” she groaned, the image of him clearing as her eyes focused.

“Shh, I’m here. I’m here, baby, don’t worry,” he whispered to her, kissing her forehead gently. “Everything’s gonna be alright.”

But Shojo quickly started to cry, remembering the events of the afternoon. “Cen.. I got... I got shot and I.. I think I died..”

“Shh, it’s okay. You’re safe, it’s okay.”

“Everything was dark.. I.. I felt numb a-and...” she cried, trying to sit up to cling to the Chronan out of fear. Cen pulled her into his arms and, in one smooth motion, sat on the couch himself with her in his lap. He held her close as she cried into his shirt, stroking her hair and giving her an occasional kiss to calm her. She slowly quieted down but continued to cling to him.

“Cen?” “Hm?” Shojo lifted her head, her cheeks wet with tears. “Are you okay?” Cen blinked. “Wha- Shojo, you’re the one who got shot. In the fucking stomach. I’m fine,” he retorted, using his thumb to wipe her tears away. “I know but.. You were probably scared too, right?” she replied, her own hand moving up to touch his face. “You were drinking, I can smell it on you.”

Cen didn’t know how to respond. How could she be thinking about him at a time like this?? It was times like this when he truly felt like he didn’t deserve her, felt truly baffled with why she chose him. And yet there she was. He moved in to kiss her properly and she melted in his arms. Her skin felt warm again. His hand moved down her neck and, for just a moment, stayed to feel her blood pumping through her veins under his fingers.

Shojo rested her head on his shoulder, feeling exhausted and closed her eyes to fall asleep in his lap. Cen adjusted the blanket to be over her again and adjusted his arms so she could be more comfortable.

“I love you, Shojo,” he whispered to her. “I love you too..” she whispered back as she began to snore softly.

Cen sat with her, the left over whiskey in his bottle too far for him to reach. He didn’t mind.

Before even thinking about forming or pouring your slab, we STRONGLY recommend that you finalise your shed design first.

Don’t assume, “I know what I want so what’s the harm in laying the slab now?”.

Sheds designs that are still in the planning stage are much more flexible than concrete slabs that are already in the ground!

And your concrete slab will have to match the engineering of your shed. Every brand of shed uses a different engineered design for footings, edge beams and so on. So unless you have the finalised design, these will never be in the right place.

Shed designs are a lot more flexible than concrete slabs… and if it turns out you have the wrong sort of slab for you shed, with the wrong thickness or dimensions, then it can cause problems you just don’t need.

So if you haven’t already done so – don’t lay your concrete slab until you’ve finalised your whole shed design.

Typical shed concrete slab dimensions

The right dimensions for your slab are critical.

Minimum dimensions

Your slab can be as small as the shed that’s going to sit on it. With the sheds we make at Designer Sheds, the minimum slab size is usually 2m x 2m (there may be some that are a little smaller… contact us if you have a smaller requirement).

Maximum dimensions

Again, a big shed needs a big slab. For example, our biggest shed has a 24m span and can be as long as you like.

BEWARE of “nominal sizing”

While many shed manufacturers may claim their sheds are a certain size, some shed companies use “nominal” sizing – which is another word for approximate sizing.

We once came across a national chain that referred to one of their sheds as a 9m x 6m shed. But when we got out the tape measure, the actual size was just over 8.4 metres by 5.9 metres. So you wouldn’t want to lay a 9m x 6m concrete slab and then find out that it was the wrong size!

With our sheds, your actual shed size will exactly match the slab size you require. That being said, where practical, there can be efficiencies from matching your shed size to the standard dimensions of steel sheets. So again – it is important to settle on your shed design first, before thinking about slabs.

The right shed slab thickness

The right concrete slab thickness is critical.

A thin, brittle slab will crack under the weight of the shed and what you put in it. And an overly thick slab will cost more than it needs to and be more difficult to put in.

The minimum concrete slab thickness we recommend is 100mm. This will be adequate for light / normal use – such as parking cars or caravans, as well as storing workshop equipment and the like.

However, if your application is heavier (such as storing heavy machinery or heavy vehicles in your shed), then a greater thickness is required and/or additional steel reinforcement.

If you speak with your shed consultant, they will help with some advice on the correct thickness for your application.

Another main factor in slab design is what type of soil you are pouring it on. So let’s talk about…

Soil classifications

One thing you must consider is if the soils in your area are reactive or not. A reactive soil will expand when wet and shrink when dry, causing movement in the ground.

The different classifications are listed below. If you have a soil type H, E or P, you would probably already know about it. The further down this list you go, the more likely the soil is to be “reactive”.

Special building techniques apply to reactive soils. As you can imagine, shifting soils will cause serious damage to the slab and building if not done correctly.

The potential problem only gets worse after you have laid your slab. This is because with a lot of rain, the soil around the slab gets wet and expands, while the soil under the slab stays dry and doesn’t expand.

Soil testing for reactive soil

If you are in an area that has reactive soil, it’s easy to engage a soil testing service to test.

You can send your soil test report to your shed consultant, and they will get their engineer to advise what, if anything, needs to be done to strengthen the slab to withstand the additional forces.

The cost of a soil test usually a few hundred dollars, depending on where you are located.

Keep in mind that if there are already other buildings on the property close to where the shed will be built (particularly a house), then a soil report will have already been done, and can be used for your shed.

Is your site level?

The next thing to do is to find out how level your site is. Over the decades we have had many people tell us their site is “flat”.

However, there is a distinct difference between “flat” and “level” (a wall is flat, only vertical).

Even an experienced eye can be deceived by variations in falls. Any good concreter these days has a laser level. Their quote should include inspecting and measuring the site to ensure it is accurate.

How to check if your site is level

If you want to check the site yourself, the simplest and cheapest way (if you don’t have access to a telescopic or laser level) is the humble string line level. These start from only few dollars at nearly all hardware stores.

Hang one of these over a tight string line to get a quick-and-dirty reading of how level your site is.

A string line level clips onto a string line that is pulled tight.

Then you fix the high end to a rock or tree, and lift or lower the other end until it shows level. From there you measure from the string line down to the ground in several places.

We would not advise constructing formwork with a string level… but if you want to double check the estimates you have, it is more than sufficient.

Should you DIY, or hire a professional?

Some people wonder if they should lay the concrete slab themselves, or hire a professional.

Our advice is: if you’re not a professional concreter, hire a professional concreter!

If you’re a very accomplished home handyman or handywoman, you may feel comfortable doing the concreting yourself. Just bear in mind that the quality of your shed will be highly dependent on the quality of your concrete slab. So don’t go into it lightly. There’s a good chance you’ll struggle otherwise, and waste a ton of time and money in the process.

How to choose the right concreter

It is important to check that any potential concreter has plenty of experience with shed slabs.

Shed slabs usually have to be more accurate than slabs for say, a house, because steel doesn’t bend a whole lot if the slab is slightly out. Whereas with a house slab, a bricklayer can do a few tricks to adjust for a slightly off-kilter slab.

So, quiz your concreter to see how much knowledge they have about concreting for sheds. You should quickly pick up if they are hesitant in any area.

Also, our advice is not to simply go for the cheapest quote, thinking they are all licensed and know what they are doing.

Ensuring your concreter is a member of an industry association such as Master Builders Australia (MBA) or Housing Industry Association (HIA) is a good start.

If you do have a dispute down the track, these associations offer quick mediation services, and will deregister any operator doing substandard work.

They will also refer and help you with any government building disputes service.

As a result, you usually won’t have problems.

Excavating the area

It is best to have your concreter organise and supervise any earthworks. They normally don’t charge for this service because it saves them a lot of time and effort if the job is done right the first time.

We have often had a customer get earthworks done, only to have the concreter turn up and say it hasn’t been done right.

This means getting someone back to do it again, costing more time and money.

Cutting and filling

Cutting refers to cutting out material from a slope to create a level surface.

And filling is the opposite – adding material to the ground to build up a level surface.

With both cutting and filling, you should ensure you also level out at least 1 to 2 metres around the shed edge. This allows easy access to build the shed, and afterwards for maintenance of the shed and ground.

Leaving a generous level pad around your shed also prevents erosion, which can undermine your slab foundations.

Where to add concrete piers

A filled site will also mean any area of the slab not on natural ground will need piers through the fill down to natural ground at a maximum of a 3 metre grid, and under every column.

Concrete piers will support your shed in case the fill underneath your slab settles – reducing cracking and movement.

Concrete piers ensure your slab and shed are supported on solid ground.

Why your slab must be absolutely level

With the sheds we manufacture, all the components are precut to the exact lengths needed. So if the slab is out of level, so will be your shed.

For argument’s sake, what would happen if your slab was off level?

Well, you would have to cut the columns shorter if they are on a part of the slab that is higher. However, then the sheeting would overhang the slab a greater distance.

Roller doors in this area would then have reduced clearance – so if this is critical to fit a horse float or caravan, for example, then you would have big problems.

Also keep in mind that you will be able to see the whole shed floor from any location… so the flatter and more level it is, the better it will look visually.

So in summary – make sure your slab is absolutely level!

Ensuring your slab is square

Your slab also needs to be as square as possible – in other words, to have exact right-angle corners.

Otherwise, when you get to the roof, you will have trouble keeping the structure square and aligned.

The sheeting will also end up out of square to the rafters and purlins, and “saw toothed” or not aligned in the gutters and the apex… which doesn’t look good visually.

How to protect yourself contractually

It’s important to have a signed contract for the work to be performed. The contract must be written either on the industry association’s pro forma contract, or the official contract of the licensing body in your State.

No reputable contractor would refuse such a request, because it is just as important for them in getting paid.

Also, NEVER pay anything upfront, and have someone check the tolerances before paying after completion.

Being perfectly level is a hard one to check without either a telescopic or laser level. But if you are concerned, it isn’t expensive to hire one or get your shed builder to check it all for you.

Your shed erector is the end of the line, and the further out it is, the harder it is for them. So it is in their best interests for all the levels and sizes to be correct.

How to check the job

Measure all four sides of the slab. They should be all as per your shed size. 10 to 15 mm longer or shorter isn’t a real problem.. but anything more than this could be, depending on the size of your shed.

Now, look down the four edges to see if they are straight. If you are concerned, pull a string line tight from corner to corner. There should be no more than about 10mm either in or out from the line.

Finally, measure diagonally from corner to corner and write down what the measurement is. Then, check the distance between the other two corners. The two measurements should be close to identical. Up to 10 to 20mm for a small slab, and 20 or 30mm difference for a large slab is OK. Anything over that and things start to get difficult to build.

Preventing and minimising cracking

The nature of concrete is that it will develop some small cracks over time.

To combat this, our engineering specifies saw cuts at regular intervals to help limit visible cracking.

Saw cuts in your concrete slab can prevent cracking in other places.

The idea of the cuts is that hopefully the cracks will occur in the cuts, making them invisible. We also require key or doweled joints on bigger slabs to allow for expansion and contraction as this also reduces the amount and size of cuts required.

For larger slabs, doweled joints allow the slab to move slightly, reducing cracks in the process.

Don’t let the concreter try and talk you out of the joints or saw cuts: they do form an important purpose. After the slab has cured for a week or so, it’s possible to fill the cuts and joints with an appropriate silicone style filler to keep out small stones and gravel.

Summary

As you can see, building a slab for your shed is all about preparing properly, and having competent people doing the work. You’ll find your shed will be completely transformed by having the perfect concrete floor, but you need to follow the appropriate steps to achieve outstanding results.
