You were doing a YLYL stream & your fans thought it would be a funny idea to try & send whimpering audios through MediaShare. You were not amused. Just then, a different video had been sent in. You were very prepared to pause the video or have the mods remove it, but you then saw your roommate Wilbur in the video.

"What's this?" You asked with a raised brow. You read the caption of the video, which read, "Wilbur was talking about Y/N during one of his concerts!!!!" You felt your face get hot.

In the video, Wilbur had just finished a song & he said to the crowd, "Guys, I forgot to mention, but shoutout to my roommate Y/N, because they stuck around even though I forget to pay rent half of the time & I bother her with my dumbass rambling! "Nah, it's fine," you said. "I was too busy to pick you up anyway."

09-03 → 361° posted five photos from a fansite of Gong Jun at an airport, highlighting their clothes.

09-04 → The watch brand Tissot posted a video teasing their endorsement with Gong Jun that would be announced two days later. Caption: "Neon lights in the dark night, super players enter the venue and wait for the excitement, wait and see[.] The new Tissot global brand spokesperson will be announced soon! He is a young actor with unlimited possibilities, an occasional soul singer, and a constant happy player. Who is he? See you on September 6th!"

His social media history indicates that he previously had some decent success, but hit a rough patch last year that he's currently trying to recover from.

09-06 → 361° posted a photo ad of Gong Jun in collaboration with the Asian Games.

→ Gong Jun posted a commercial he did for Tissot, announcing his new endorsement with them. Hello Hist Histo Gold Historix . this is a really hard quesitons

im not very good at tips and tricks but here's what i do:

fiurst i really like pinterest here's my 2000+ pin board for art inspiration

for colors there are some things that seem right according to the Cogmented Guidelines which is just tone, atmosphere, feeling, balling, ETC...

out of the three art classes ive taken in my life all of which were in my most recent school years has been in charcoal, so a lot of what i pick is based on values too: ill turn the canvas black and white using hue blending mode, or take a picture on my phone and turn it black and white for real life things

my main goal for character pieces is to make the focus stand out but also be cohesive with the background, so ill use different values to differentiate those if colors are similar. red is much darker than yellow, even at the highest saturation, u get it. the rest is just using opposites on the color wheel

i also tend to use blending modes.. usually around 2-3 layers?

these are my base colors

kinda hard to distinguish zam in the values, yeah? and planet's shoes are far too bright, i want planets face and arms and closed fists to be their focus

i use a wide variety of the blending modes, but here both of these worked to darken the characters while increasing their saturation

the similar qualities on the characters make them cohesive with each other despite the wildly different designs and colors.. this could also just be a "style" thing that makes it cohesive but that gets more into shapes and how i draw and i dont think i could even explain that

there's also just general inspirations.. i chose a light blue background for this probably because i was subconsciously inspired by an 8 year old pmv of hawkfrost and ivypool by m0zarts using the song that is in the caption (personal by stars) AND because it's a softer color outside of planet's intense pinks and zam's yellows

this is called like triadic color palette i think i cant remember

there are always exceptions to rules and based on the atmosphere i will make the character blend in more e.g.:

for poses jii dont know i have visions in my head AND pinterest boards: 1 2

a lot of my art is expressive through poses instead of expressions because most of my designs dont have the capabilities for human expression; you're left with actions and body language (im also mad alexithymic so that's probably another reason why)

ignoring general atmosphere and art style, both are big movements but hold very different emotions ^_^ sharp and angry and desperate vs gay and carefree

the use of perspective further helps the emotions within poses, lower views make a character more intimidating, etc etc you get it for sure.

if you want to go hard on perspective, colors/lighting, and composition i highly recommend taking a film class or course or watching a video idk or something related to media-making.. drawing and film are very similar especially in regards to things like storyboarding.. the rule of thirds and camera angles that depict feeling are soo helpful to have in the back of your mind shoutout my one film and media class from 7th grade

@hourglass-meadow Hope it's okay if I reply in reblog format - I realized maybe this delves a bit into vocasynth history people'd want to see or add onto!

But yes, there were/are english lyrics! Something I've found though, is a lot of the videos from that era (early-mid 2010's) relied on Youtube's "annotations" function rather than the newer "captions". See, for some reason I still don't get to this day, Youtube decided a) this was a necessary transition* and b) annotations would not be carried forward in any way, shape or form (as far as I know).

What this means now is if you look up an older vocaloid song and see videos labeled with having ES or english subs, some of them just don't have them anymore since Youtube entirely eradicated any and all data annotations carried!

So afaik the videos themselves are still up, but if the uploader didn't go for "hard subs" that are actually On the uploaded video, then the lyrics themselves aren't up anymore. It's a shame, especially since a lot of the more prevalent uploaders of the time relied on annotations instead. (Shoutout to users like Amesubs and lordxwillie for hard subs work AND frequent uploads)

All of that said... As far as showing people the songs go, I could just look up the translation separately... but it just doesn't have the same impact lol

*This isn't to knock on captions per se, I have found they're very useful for translating non-music videos to an extent, even if it's auto-generated. But removing the annotations function in exchange both baffles and vexes me. It's made annotations and their usage oddly a form of lost media - a practice which I never appreciate.

So tl;dr - videos are still up and translations still exist! Just not the subtitles themselves. Hopefully this helps!

You’re in the kitchen helping Asmo with dinner duty and singing along to one of your playlists of human realm music that you like to show him.

Asmo starts filming your cute little dance while you stir the pot on the stove because you are just adorable!

About ten seconds into him filming, Lucifer appears in the doorway with quite the stern look on his face. You know, the one that comes right before a “MAMMOOOOOON” and strikes fear into the heart of all those with functioning eardrums. That one.

He opens his mouth, presumably to tell y’all to shut the fuck up, but then there’s a lull in the music and the eldest can hear your voice ever so slightly above the song’s vocalist and he freezes.

Man stops in his tracks like someone just smacked him in the face with a midair volleyball.

Asmo can be heard stifling a laugh behind his phone.

Lucifer’s face gets so soft and he almost, almost, loosens his metal-rod-through-the-ass posture before you notice him and give a little wave and ask if you and Asmo were being too loud like the considerate darling you are.

Lucifer clears and his throat and says something like, “No, you aren’t. I was just coming to check on how dinner is coming along,” and leaves, after which Asmo immediately presses the post button.

Screenshots of Lucifer’s heart eyes for you go absolutely viral because every demon on Devilgram goes absolutely feral for seeing the eldest demon brother lose his dignified composure. It becomes a meme template. “Get you someone who looks at you like Lucifer looks at MC” and “me at the delivery demon when he shows up with my spicy bat wings” posts become commonplace. (Asmo thinks the memes are totally worth getting strung up with Mammon for laughing at them.)

Mammon:

Much like Lucifer, you and Mammon end up going viral off Asmo’s Devilgram. (Noticing a pattern here?) 

He pulls a silly prank on your asses and honestly I don’t know how you fell for it. But hey, they say “idiots in love” for a reason, so...

You and Asmo are sitting in the common room of the House of Lamentation just chillin. Well, he’s chillin, you’re on the floor studying for an upcoming exam.

The video starts in the middle of a conversation you and the avatar of lust were having.

“No, Asmo,” you say. “Mammon and I don’t use pet names for each other.” Now that’s just a darn lie, and every demon and crow within ten miles of Mammon and you together knows it.

You guys go viral the first time you make an appearance on one of Levi’s weekly (insert cool Devildom streaming service name here) streams. 

It’s completely unintentional. You had been asking him for weeks to play with him on there, but he’s the avatar of envy after all. He doesn’t like sharing his partner, even if it’s with random strangers who have no real access to you.

However, he has his stream on a Thursday instead of a Friday one week, and you come into his room carrying dinner because 1) You didn’t realize he was streaming and 2) No matter what he was doing, the boy needed to eat. It wasn’t unusual for you to bring him dinner, so you had no idea why he was blushing and stammering even more than usual this time in particular. Boy was speaking in beached whale trying to tell you what was wrong.

Then you notice his screen. Oh! “Hi chat!” You wave, setting Levi’s food down on his desk in front of his keyboard. “M-MC!” He full-on whines, slamming a hand over his mouth afterwards when he remembers his viewers could hear that.

Honestly, they’d meme the fuck out of him if it weren’t for the fact that they are FINALLY SEEING HIS HENRY!!! THE MYSTERIOUS MC!!!

Chat is bombarding you with questions while you make Levi eat dinner. And by make him eat dinner, I mean literally feeding this man forkfuls/spoonfuls while he games because you love how flustered he gets when you do that. 

Does it impact his score? Absolutely. Does he care? Not really when you’re pampering him like that.

You start answering chat’s questions about you while he’s chewing so he can’t tell you to stop LMAO-

You’re a natural on stream. The VOD becomes the most popular on Levi’s account in a matter of hours and soon cute highlights compilations of you and him on that stream start making the rounds on Devildom Twitter.

There was buildup to Satan going viral, similar to Levi in a way. 

Satan does have a Devilgram, but it’s basically a white woman’s Instagram with added book reviews for variety. Unless you’re a reader his account is pretty boring: candles, books, fireplaces, and cats.

However, after you two started reading together fairly often he began posting pictures of your legs draped over his while you sat together. They’d always be captioned with vague ass pretentious literary criticism.

You two go viral when he finally shows your face, entirely by accident.

The post is a video, which is already strange for him and grabs attention. In it, you’re scoffing and reading an excerpt of a book, mocking its understanding of female anatomy.

“I’m quoting here, Satan: ‘her breasts bouncing around like giant pacmen.’ I’M SORRY?? THAT ISN’T HOW BOOBS WORK SIR. WHY ARE MEN ALLOWED TO WRITE?” 

(fun fact that is a very real quote from a very real book I really read last month pls save me)

Originally the camera is focused on your body, with your head out of frame to protect your privacy, but your righteous anger made Satan laugh. Like, a real laugh. The one that makes you and everyone in earshot wonder if he truly was never an angel cause he sure as hell laughs like one but anyway-

When he threw his head back, his DDD angled up just a tad without him noticing, and your face was in view for like .2 seconds. Screenshots of it are making the rounds on Devilgram almost immediately: FINALLY THE LEGS’ OWNER HAS BEEN FOUND.

Satan apologizes profusely but you honestly find it funny and you two opt to just start taking selfies while reading with both of your faces in them from now on. 

Asmodeus:

I’m gonna be real with you: you and Asmo go viral all the time. Pretty much everything Asmo posts can be considered viral because of his social media following and his status as one of the seven avatars of sin.

However, there are some fairly cute highlights to be pointed out among the times you were both featured in a post that blew up.

Your favorite is probably that time Asmo livestreamed on of you guys’ ‘Nail Nites,’ as you call them.

You’re both on the floor, doing your nails and kicking your feet back and forth while talking to chat. A lot of the questions are about your relationship, and there’s a lot of flirting back and forth between the two of you.

A particular clip of the stream does blow the fuck up on Devilgram, though, when someone screen records it and posts it with a bunch of heart emojis edited over it.

“’What colors do you think best describe each other?’ Ooo, that’s a good one, chat!” Asmo claps his hands together excitedly, making sure to be  careful of his nails.

Pretty much everyone expected you to say pink, but you surprised both your boyfriend and your viewers when, after a pensive few moments, you replied with “Hmm...probably yellow or orange.”

“Can I ask why, darling?” Asmo tilts his head in confusion. I mean, yeah, those colors look good on him, but he doesn’t wear them often so he’s wondering about your thought process. 

“Well, in the human world those colors often represent happiness, optimism, and positivity. You’re always the cheerful presence I need in my life when things get hard, so you have the vibe of those colors.”

Asmo proceeds to burst into tears and hug you, messing up both of your nails and prolonging the stream since you both have to start over. But neither of you particularly care. 

Fun fact: Asmo has the clip that demon made of that portion of the stream saved on his DDD and watches it whenever he feels sad.

Beelzebub:

Beel and you probably go the most viral out of everybody. Like this moment is an entire phenomenon across the Devildom internet. 

It’s a video, or well, multiple videos, taken at the end of a Fangol game that Beel’s team had just won. Everyone is cheering and going crazy, yourself included, and you just really wanted to congratulate your boyfriend.

So, like the rational person you are, you elect to climb up onto the railing of the bleachers and wave to get his attention. 

You were absolutely fine up there, and sat all comfortably motioning Beel over to you. He notices, of course, and jogs over, standing right beneath you and looking up. (Back where you were sitting, Mammon is screeching like a hyena in heat and Belphie, who is laying down, has one eye open to glare at him. The youngest knows Beel would never let you hurt yourself; you’re fine.)

A bunch of assorted demons at the game has started filming while you were sat atop the railing since you were rather noticeable. Therefore, there’s a shit ton of different angles of the adorable events that follow:

You slide off the railing, landing right in Beel’s waiting arms bridal style. You’ve got this brilliant smile on your face as you pull his helmet off. None of the DDDs filming can hear it over the crowd noise, but Beel asks you why you just went through all that trouble and you tell him it’s because you wanted to tell him how proud you are.

Soft boy’s chest puffs up and he smiles this big cheesy smile at you reach up to run a hand through his hair. You feel him practically purr at the contact, and with a laugh you pull him in and plant a big ole smooch on him.

The crowd, at least those of them that can see, scream. Everyone is running high on adrenaline and happy emotions; something that cute causes a ruckus!! When you pull away Beel proceeds to put you on his shoulders and you celebrate with him and the rest of his team.

The videos of you two being adorable go completely viral and there are some threads dedicated to stockpiling every single angle taken of the event. Beel is completely oblivious to the attention but you have a lot of them saved on your DDD.

Belphegor:

If you think Belphegor has any sort of social media presence whatsoever then you are sorely mistaken. (Well okay he actually does run some anonymous troll accounts to meme on Lucifer’s posts but that’s neither here nor there-)

Therefore, naturally, you two go viral off of Asmo’s Devilgram. 

Okay so someone in the obey me tag the other say headcanoned that Belphie will go out of his way to nap in ridiculous places and my brain really took that and RAN WITH IT.

So what happens is that Belphie will fall asleep in the fucking weirdest places. I’m talking on top of the fridge, underneath the dinner table, on top of bookshelves...you name it, he has slept there, no matter the effort it takes to get there in the first place. 

And, ever since you two started dating, you would join him. Sometimes it involved putting yourself at risk of great bodily harm, but the little smile he gave when you he saw you fucking scaling the countertop to reach him made it worth it.

So anyway, since Beel adores the both of you to no end, he takes pictures whenever he sees you two napping together, whether or not it is in a crazy place. He sends these to the family group chat because he thinks they’re adorable.

Over a span of weeks to months, Asmo has built up a stock of images of you and Belphie cuddles up in seemingly impossible places. Once he has about ten or so, he posts a compilation of them to his Devilgram with some cheesy ass caption like “The things we do for love <3″.

They become a meme SO QUICKLY. Like UNBELIEVABLY quickly. 

The picture of you and Belphie sleeping on top of a bookshelf, in particular, is a big hit. Memes abound.

“If my girl doesn’t climb up a bookshelf to cuddle my ass, she don’t love me.” “Get yourself a partner who scales bookshelves just to be with your ass.” Etc etc...Belphie doesn’t give a shit but you laugh at a lot of them so he sees that as a good outcome.

You woke before the sun, Pierre's bare chest pressed to your back and an arm slung over your middle. You wiggle in his grasp, trying to be sneaky as you turn to face him but ultimately waking him. You run a finger over his lips as they curve upwards before biting lightly. You draw back and he laughs quietly.

"Morning," You whisper, head throbbing slightly. "I feel like I got hit by a train."

"Knocking back four or five shots in a few hours will do that to you." Pierre stretches, arching his back and exposing his neck. The slight mark you left the night before had darkened into a true, unmissable bruise. The reminder of it sent a thrill down your spine, and you couldn't resist ghosting your lips over the hurt.

He sighs, cupping your chin and bringing your mouth up to his. The kiss is lazy, both of you still too ensnared by sleep to put any heat into it. 

You stayed tangled in him until Yuki called to remind Pierre they had to be at the airport by eight. You helped him pack as slowly as you could manage, a stone settling in your gut. When the time came, Pierre hadn’t wanted to leave, only relenting when Yuki called again to say the jet was waiting on him. 

The longing wasn't something that normally hit you this hard when Pierre left. It was new, the edges raw and unhealed when you poked at it. Everything on campus Tuesday reminded you of him, from the sunlight hitting the lab table to the rare cloudless blue of the London sky. 

Just when you’d gotten over the sting of his absence, the news broke. Charles sent you the link to the article, simply captioned, 'You will want to read this.'

Gasly snogs mystery girl in London bar, the headline read. And fuck, that was a grainy picture of you standing between his legs, fingers tangled in his hair. You scroll through the article, heart in your throat, praying you weren’t called out by name.

By some small miracle, whoever had taken the photos hadn’t gotten one of your face. Against your better judgement, you checked the comments.

That was where your name came up. Fans had connected the dots. Your hair had been up that night, but it was the exact same shade as the picture. Your instagram had been filled with photosets of London for months, and Pierre had flown out early before Silverstone. Clearly he had been meeting someone. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that you were the one in the photos, even if the article didn't mention you directly.

The first DM didn’t come for a few hours. It was nasty, the user hurling cruel words at you that struck your chest like tiny knives. Plenty more followed, threats and names alike. 

Gold digger.

He could do so much better.

You couldn’t bear attending classes. You sent Pierre the link to the damning article and stayed in your apartment and sobbed. The fans- if they could even be called such a thing- pulled no punches. Every DM and comment struck home, until you eventually had to turn your phone off and curl up in bed, defeated.

People are cruel, you thought, wiping the tears that streak down your cheeks. 

You kept your phone off for a few hours before you gathered the courage to check it again. You immediately uninstall any and all social media, unwilling to let it affect you further than it already had. But messages pour in, most from Pierre and a few from your brother.

Hell yeah! Was all your brother sent, along with a screenshot of the article. Your mouth twists, the memory of the comments washing over you again.

Pierre’s messages were the ones that broke you. There were close to a dozen of them, accompanied by missed calls and panicked voicemails. 

“Are you okay? Please pick up the phone, my love, I need to hear that you’re okay. I love you. Please call me back.”

The last message, time stamped from a half hour earlier, simply said, “I’m getting on a plane.”

A fresh sob wracks your body. You press a hand to your mouth, trying to silence it. God, he was so pure hearted. You knew the comments would hurt him just as much as they hurt you, if not more. He would blame himself, when in reality, it had been a mutual mistake. Either one of you should have recognized the risks of your actions. But you couldn't let him risk his career for it. You could make it through… somehow.

I’m okay, you type, hating that you had to lie. You don’t need to come to London.

I’m already in the air, He informs you, and you curse softly. He would have hell to pay upon returning to Austria, even if he had somehow convinced Tost to let him leave at the last minute.

The flight from Vienna to Heathrow was about two and a half hours, which meant you had that long to pull yourself together. You didn’t want Pierre to see you broken. You shower and change into slightly less ragged sweatpants and an oversized shirt. You grab your laptop, quickly emailing your professors to apologize for missing lecture unannounced and informing them you wouldn’t be there the rest of the week either. You'd need time to sort out your head before facing your peers.

Pierre’s knock came far too quickly. You’d barely assembled your face into a mask of resolve before the door opened. Whatever semblance of control you'd managed to construct came crashing down at the sight of him. He looks just as distraught as you, eyes red and cheeks flushed.

Before he says a word, he gathers you in his arms, tucking your head to his chest. Your lip wobbles, and when he whispers “I’m so sorry,” the tears fall in earnest. For less than a week, you’d been on top of the world with Pierre by your side. You’d gotten to enjoy the idea of being his girlfriend for six days before reality stepped in and ruined it.

You clutch at his shirt, fighting hard to piece yourself back together. Now that he was there, the dam had burst and no amount of willpower could keep the sobs back. 

Pierre sweeps you up, one arm under your knees and the other keeping you tight to him as he carries you to your bedroom. He climbs into bed, shoes and all, and keeps you in his lap as he strokes your hair. He sniffles, softly enough that you know he's trying to be strong for you.  The realization that he's crying too just makes it hurt that much more.

"I'm sorry," He whispers again and again, as if the two syllables were the only ones he remembered. You can't find your voice to tell him you don't blame him or how much his presence means. 

Instead, you press your face into the soft cotton of his sweater. He doesn't move except to stroke a calloused hand over your hair. You let his presence wash over you until your breathing turns more even and your fingers stop trembling. 

"H-how were you able to leave Austria?" Your voice shakes, but you tilt your head up to face him. He quickly wipes away the wetness on his cheeks with a sleeve.

"I just left. The only one I told was Yuki. He said he'd cover for me. I saw the comments and I couldn't think straight. I didn't want you to believe them." The look he turns on you is an apology. "When I called and it didn't even ring, I had to get to you."

"I don't think you'll be welcomed back with open arms," You point out, and he presses a tender kiss to your brow.

"They can be pissed at me all they want. I don't care. I needed to be here." You wouldn't admit it, but he was right. The fact that he'd risked everything to comfort you helped you ignore what those users had said. Nothing could ever erase the words, but Pierre’s presence dulled their impact.

“I already petitioned for the article to be removed,” Pierre says softly. “Don’t know if it’ll amount to anything, but it’s worth a shot.”

You nod and wipe your nose on your sleeve. “It’s so much worse than I imagined.” Pierre’s cheek comes to a rest atop your head, his thumb rubbing soothing circles on your arm. “I get that I’m not the only one that loves you. But it’s like they don’t remember that I’m human.”

“People are bold when they're speaking to a screen instead of another person.” 

"It was so much easier before anyone knew," You say, words dipped in longing. Rumors had never swirled when you had kept your distance, you'd made sure of it. But now that the secret was out… Would your life be spent dodging threats and dealing with negativity?

He pauses, thumb stilling. “Do you… Do you want it to go back to the way things were before? When we were... friends?"

Your head whips around. “What?”

“It isn’t fair that you have to go through this because of me,” He explains. “I hate the fact that I’m the one causing you pain. The way you’re being treated is only because I live in the spotlight.”

“It’s not your fault,” You assert, placing a hand on his stubbled cheek. “Please don’t blame yourself.”

“Maybe it would be easier if we-”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence,” You say sternly. You force him to look at you, his eyes storming like the sea. “We’ll figure it out. Our emotions got the best of us last week. We just have to be more careful, keep this behind closed doors. We don’t need to flaunt it, right? Just tell the press that you want to keep your private life private, and I’ll take a break from social media. We can figure it out.”

Pierre nodded in agreement. His voice is scratchy, like he had swallowed gravel. “Alright.”

“It’s us against the world,” You tell him, “And I couldn’t ask for a better teammate.” Your lips ghost against his in an attempt to reassure him. He returns the kiss, firmer and more confident. Your hand slips to the nape of his neck, drawing him in as your tongue glides against his lower lip. 

Last week, you’d fucked. But tonight, the sex was something else entirely. It was soft sighs and languid kisses, whispered words of adoration and promises of endless love. Above all, it was an affirmation. Pierre loved you; heart, mind, and soul. In every sense of the word. He would let nothing come between you and himself. Not his career, jealous fans, or the thousands of miles that may sometimes separate you.

Pierre offered you his heart, and you accepted it without question.

The few precious hours Pierre managed to give you were enough to keep you afloat the rest of the week. The break from seemingly endless lectures helped to reset your mind and give you time to focus on yourself.

Pierre called as often as he could, and texted when he couldn’t. You filled him in on the little things you did to keep busy, like how you spent all of Sunday rearranging your tiny apartment so that your bed was as close to his in Austria as you could get it. Monday night, you fell asleep on Facetime with him as you tried and failed to write a term paper for your architectural history class. 

Pierre’s visit and subsequent calls had made you feel invincible. But the moment you walk into the lecture hall on Tuesday, everyone’s eyes are on you: the first test of your newly minted confidence. Chin held high, you meet a few of their stares and take your usual seat at the front. The moment you start to question yourself, if you're ready to face the scrutiny, your phone buzzes with a text from Pierre.

Ignore them. Remember that I love you. I’ll call you tonight.

Once again, he somehow knew exactly what you needed to hear. It amazed you that a handful of carefully selected words could grant you so much strength. But it was proof that Pierre recognized and accepted your fears and was willing to help you work through them. 

You take a breath, letting the whispers of your classmates fade until they were nothing more than a faint hum. You turn your focus on the professor as she enters, falling into your usual cadence. Easy. You could ignore the gossip until they got tired of it and left you alone. Their fascination couldn’t last more than a few days. 

You made it through the rest of your classes and walked home without incident. No one ran up to you and demanded you explain your relationship with Pierre. Your worst fears had been abated. The stress of it rolls off your shoulders when you make it to your apartment. It was already 7 o’clock, but Pierre hadn’t called yet. Seeing as Austria was an hour ahead, you weren’t sure he would hold to his earlier promise.

Your stomach growls, and you leave your bag next to your bed before heading to the kitchen. Dinner was a box of macaroni and cheese, simple but delicious. You couldn’t stop yourself from glancing at your phone every few minutes, hoping to see Pierre’s name on the screen. 

Coming to terms with the fact that you probably wouldn't be getting a call, you settle into your favorite chair and crack open your laptop. Term papers didn't write themselves, and you still had a few thousand words to write. You lost yourself in theories and articles for a few hours before your phone breaks your concentration.

You awake?

A smile splits your face. Yeah. Working on this never ending term paper.

You laugh quietly. You agree with his 'school first' mentality most of the time, but there were exceptions to every rule. You call him, heart stuttering when he answers.

"You're supposed to be writing."

"Well, nice to hear your voice too," You say playfully. "It was boring me anyway. Who wants to read twenty pages comparing Roman and Greek columns anyway?"

"I'm pretty sure your professor does," He says with a laugh that warms your bones. If only he were standing in front of you so you could feel his chest rumble beneath your fingertips. Wanting to see his face, you switch to a video call.

"I was wondering how long that would take," He teases, smile wide and welcoming. 

"I miss you," You say softly, padding to your bed. You'd accomplished enough that you could push off writing more until tomorrow. "I wish I could come to Japan this weekend."

"Me too, my love," He responds, voice tinged with longing. "It's one of the more challenging circuits on the calendar. And you've always wanted to visit Tokyo."

You weren't surprised that he remembered that silly dream of yours. "Send me something that reminds me of you." You flick off the lights before climbing under the covers, pulling them up to your chin. "Something cute and sweet."

"I fly out tomorrow night to meet Charles. I should have some extra time to do some window shopping."

"You and Charles going on a date?" You tease, propping your head on a hand. Now that you were cozy, it was hard to keep your eyes open.

He shakes his head. "He's been… helping me with the press. Tackling it all."

"Oh." The mood sours. You decide not to dwell on it, turning to humor instead. "Give him a kiss for me as a thank you."

"He would love that," Pierre laughs. Comfortable silence blankets you, broken only by Pierre humming softly. It was a song you recognize as one of his favorites; it must have been stuck in his head.

"What time do I have to wake up on Sunday?" You mumble, struggling to stay awake while he was unknowingly serenading you.

"Do you want to watch the prerace stuff?" Papers shuffle softly on the other end as he figures it out for you. "If you do, probably like 3:30. If not, the race would be at five your time, so maybe 4:30."

"That's early. You're lucky I love you enough to sacrifice my beauty sleep."

He didn't hesitate before responding. "Luckily you don't need sleep to be beautiful."

Your mouth curls in a sleepy smile. "When you say things like that, I hate the distance between us even more."

Pierre scrubs a hand over his face. "I don't have a break for another month or so."

"I know."

Silence falls again, both of you lost in your own heads.

"You should sleep," He says finally, and you nod. Your first class was only 6 hours from now. "I'll sing to you if you promise to close your eyes and try to sleep."

Despite your best efforts, you yawn. You often called him for a song when you couldn't sleep and the time difference permitted it. Just hearing his voice was soothing enough, but a song? It was heaven. "Shouldn't be hard to do." Sleep came within minutes, Pierre's soft song your lullaby.

💀 Sat 3 Oct ‘20 🎃

Harryween may have been pushed back to next year, but you know who always come through for us in the clutch: Liam! The LP show logo on veeps has changed to a version that's a carved pumpkin with spoopy flames inside, suggesting a halloween event. How will Liam top the costume he already wore at his birthday stream? I'm aflutter with chills of anticipation... Also he finished the skull drawing he started on his livestream the other day and captioned it “getting ready for Halloween.” I'd have been wildly impressed anyway, but seeing it go from a pencil outline to a shaded masterpiece makes it even more impressive. This fandom is full of things that seem too improbable to be real, and Liam being not just an incredibly talented musician but also a one-time olympic level runner and skilled visual artist with a miraculous kidney who once saved someone from a burning building comes in ahead of even the frankly unrealistic number of identical twins we have to deal with, someone really needs to speak with the writers about dialing it back a touch. Who does they think he is, James Bond or something?!

Charlie Lightening (who was on hand 24/7 at the time of the Walls release and shared with a fan the anxiety he and the rest of Team Louis were feeling about whether it would do well) posted about the album's unexpected return to the chart this week, saying “shoutout to the fans who made this happen. I've seen [their] support globally it's something else,” and Jamie Hartman, who Louis credits with finding him the sound he wanted in their work together, also thanked fans (“[Louis] has some of the most amazing fans in the bloody world!”) and said he “was with him all week making some new magic so it was perfect timing.” Jamie tagged the wrong account for Louis but that's okay since he would have been able to congratulate him in person anyway while they banged out the “four songs in four days” Louis just told us about! What a welcome interruption that wild fan intervention must have been and the perfect boost for those new tunes- talk about a win for fans.

Niall says “we're back!” with a OOTD post and a 9 song playlist for BBC1, so Niall stans who feared that his recent tweet about taking time out might mean we wouldn't hear from him for a while can turn those frowns upside down! I believe he meant not that he was going dark and disappearing but simply that he doesn't plan to release new music while promo and touring are still hampered, which certainly makes sense given the interruption of the Heartbreak Weather release, and his continued media presence would seem to confirm this.

Hey, do you know who else ISN'T James Bond? Well, all of them (even Louis, he was the evil cat), but only one of them went on record to say so today; Harry. According to his team rumors published in the Daily Mail saying he was in meetings to star in the franchise, “aren't even remotely true.” And last but not least, add a name to the varied and bizarre assortment of celebs who have praised Harry: Jon Bon Jovi, who said, “Harry Styles is the real deal. He’s really great.” Someday we'll have to compile that list; it will be thousands long and genuinely the funniest most random possible assortment of people, I'd love to be at that dinner party (but ofc not really as that would be very unsafe and unlike n*zi politicians I would not want to see the Harry fan club suffer the consequences of careless socializing.)

1. i am going to do what i Always do at icebreakers/whatever and throw it out here too that i work, sort-of-indirectly-kinda, for youtube ! im a writer/reviewer on the closed captioning team for (sigh) twoset violin, aka the world’s worst enunciators (shoutout to the ppl in the comments who mention subtitles-san............yall give us life)

2. the second thing i Always bring up at icebreakers/etc is that i am a certified scuba diver!! i adore the ocean and respect it deeply with all the fear in my heart,, it’s so lovely, i’ll never forget the feeling of being like 50m down and looking up and it’s just: w a t e r

3. i really enjoy finding random lil communities of hobbyists and uhhhh that basically bleeds over into whatever i become mildly obsessed with for the next couple months and inevitably becomes a future life goal; currently it is fishkeeping/aquascaping and rare succulents ESPECIALLY haworthias i love haworthias so much guys

4. whenever i have a choice my academic projects are like 80% about fandoms and 20% about medical humanities and thats basically a summary of Me As An Academic And Human Being (which speaking of,, i just wrapped up a conference presentation where i got to present my research on queer cn diaspora in danmei fandom and i was so nervous but it was SO fun even tho it was over zoom)

5. oh my god not to get all academic again but i am Obsessed w the medical humanities you guys it’s so cool (basically it’s the intersection of medicine + the arts, whether that means incorporating art as an augmentative treatment or incorporating medical experiences into art!! a lot of ppl are somewhat familiar w music therapy or art therapy and those fall under this category) LIKE,, i honestly feel so seen at this intersection?? and both fields would truly benefit from (and need!!) the influence of the other

6. and now for a complete 180: i go through clothes super slowly and rarely buy new clothes so half my wardrobe hasnt changed in Years . meaning: a bunch of it is still stuff my mom picked out for me o)-( this is an unfortunate combo of the fact that i used to hate clothes shopping + never used to go shopping w friends Ever + am a creature of habit

7. ok so my parents made me learn piano from a young age and i, to their horror, actually loved it and seriously considered persuing music ed when i graduated hs LMFAO like if i lived in an ideal world my majors would be music ed + museum studies / museumology + medical humanities + fandom/media studies

8. as a result of being a longtime classically trained pianist i subscribe p closely to the Stereotypical Classical Musician Genres (kpop, anime music / jrock, modern classical) with a dash of whatever my friends throw my way (alt, indie, folk, i dont even technically know most of the terms lmfao) so it really tracks that my fav song rn is from a modern-traditional cn music group

We've already posted a big "Thank You!" post over on the @thankyoutsfriends accounts, but we have a little more to say as this project wraps up.

We've gone through so many losses since the end of last year's ThankYouTSFriends. Those losses really affected us, to the point where we questioned whether we should even do this project again this year. Ultimately, we decided to do it anyway because we knew all the positivity that would come from it would be good for us. When we started officially planning it in June, however, we had no idea that before the project even launched, we would have to endure another huge loss. We had to say goodbye to our dog, Jamey, in July.

The loss did not stop there, either. We had another one in August and two more in September. You may think we were silly to continue running a project while dealing with all that grief (and if you do think that, you're absolutely right) but we're so glad we did it. This project gave us something to keep us busy when all we wanted to do was cry. It gave us a reason to get out of bed every morning and a reason to fall asleep each night, actually excited about the days to come. It gave us a purpose when we no longer felt we had one. It gave us an outlet to pour our hearts into. (Trust us, when you're used to smothering a dog in love and affection every moment of every day and you're suddenly no longer able to, all that love's gotta go somewhere!) We don't know what we would have done without this project.

Another thing we considered not even doing was the shoutout songs we made for everyone on the line-up. Actually, we were going to do them last year, but we lacked the time and the courage. We've been singing our whole lives, but it's something we really lost our confidence with over the last several years. (Anyone else remember when we used to post covers on YouTube? They've all been privated for a reason lol.) It was a really vulnerable thing for us to do, but we loved the idea too much, so we did it. Again, we're so glad we did it. Somewhere while writing and recording the songs, we noticed our confidence coming back. None of those songs are perfect, there's plenty of flat notes, voice cracks, and all kinds of imperfections woven all through them, but they turned out so much better than we ever thought they would, and we're so proud of them! To everyone who left really supportive and sweet comments on those shoutouts, that was so encouraging to us, thank you! Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this project in any way. You have no idea how much we appreciate you.

Going public is not the issue, it’s the people they went public with and it was too soon. There are a lot of “out” yet private couples. There were so many valentine posts that I didn’t even realize some of these celebs were dating lol. Tom may be private but his personality is definitely one of showing those he loves, he wants them to do things together (like N watching him play golf), he wants to at least acknowledge his significant other. Z seems comfortable hiding and staying at home. It’s unrealistic for anyone. TZ never even vacationed together. Beyoncé was notoriously private but even she and J at a certain point claimed each other whether in songs or shoutouts at award shows. One that comes to mind is the 2004 VMA’s where they said “what up” to each other in their acceptance speech. They also were pictured on vacation/yachts all the time. So it’s really understandable why people would think there was nothing much to their (Tom and Z) relationship or just good friends.

I do agree that TZ both went public probably with the WRONG people, or at the WRONG time.  

And yea, I would have loved for TZ to be public, but what’s done is done.  You can’t change the past.  🤷

IF they are dating each other again, I STILL feel that we should just wait and see what happens.  Let them breathe my goodness.  They might be planning to “go public” after all of this filming is over and after they’ve concretely seen that a LDR w/each other can work again, even during covid.  We really don’t know. There’s so little we do know.  I actually don’t mind them being private right now. It’s already enough stress trying to rekindle something with your ex, but imagine doing that when the WHOLE WORLD is watching you? When fans of you AND Antis (who don’t want you together again) are watching?  Like, I totally agree that it would be better for them to eventually go public (if they ARE dating each other again - which, we honestly don’t know yet) , but at the same time I think that people need to realize that fans don’t know them personally. You don’t know their relationship.  You don’t know what goes on privately.  And based on what Tom has said recently?  I’m not too sure he’s even too “keen” on going “public” with anyone anytime soon.  Contrary to popular belief, Tom is pretty private himself. He probably had a totally different mentality about “going public” back in 2016-early 2019 vs, what his mentality might be NOW, after the backlash against Olivia, and after he saw how fans treated his gf Nadia.   Yes, Tom loves to “claim” his gfs, but we don’t know what his mindset is right now.  He might have a totally different realization right now.  Even he mentioned in his British GQ interview (which was pretty recent btw) that dating in the public eye can be frustrating and it’s something he worries about ALL the time.  Believe me, he knows his fanbase.  That’s why he was scared to even put a caption to the first pic he posted of Nadia, even though the media had already stated that the two were dating over a month prior to his first post of her.  He is aware that his fangirls would have a hard time if he confirmed a rlshp.  If he was ignorant or naïve about it before, then he’s certainly clear of it now. So much so, that he’s afraid to even confirm a breakup with his ex gf Nadia (even though it’s so clearly obvious) because he’s afraid the poor girl might get hate.  I know you all keep trying to look at this from YOUR own eyes, but you have to look at these things from their eyes too as a celebrity in the public eye.   One day, when Tom gets older lol, and his fanbase isn’t as rabid, he will have more freedom to be more “open” with his rlshps if he chooses to.  I think he was “testing the waters” with going public with Nadia, but even that ended up not working right.  And maybe he realized that perhaps what Z was saying all along about being private is actually not such a bad idea. With Tadia I just feel like they should have dated each other at LEAST a couple of months OUTSIDE of quarantine before going public, that way they could see if they were really going to last.  But maybe that’s just me. 👀

Lastly.... TZ have “taken vacations” before. They spent time in NYC together.  Z visited London and visited with his grandparents and family.  Their schedules are/were so busy that it was hard to just go on vacation.  IN fact, before Greece, Z had rarely really had a “vacation” in years!  And if one of them wasn’t working, the other was.  

Anyway, I too (like you) wish that things could have been different, but we can’t go and change the past, and it’s been nearly 2 years now, so maybe their mindsets on a lot of things have changed. They both seem to have been working on themselves, and their mindsets might have changed a bit.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.   At this point, there’s no sense even worrying about it though, because we don’t even know if they’re seriously dating each other again.  😅

John Torrington: A Star Is Born

John Torrington was just a boy from Manchester who had the unlucky fate of dying first in an expedition that would have no survivors. The names of the men buried on Beechey Island ended up in newspapers after the discovery of their graves in 1850, one of the first traces of Franklin’s men, and an omen of what would later be realized. For people studying the Franklin mystery, Torrington was a breadcrumb, the first hint of a trail to the answer of what happened to the ships and crew. But beyond that, he wasn’t an officer with a list of accomplishments, he wasn’t a noteworthy member of the crew, he had no one coming forward to tell of his great exploits and achievements. To the many people wondering what happened to the expedition, he was just a name on a headboard.

In 1984, the world finally put a face to that name. A face that defied the passage of time but had become distorted, twisted in a death grimace by the ice. A face that could give grown adults nightmares.

A face that the media slapped onto every newspaper and magazine they could find.

The level of preservation of Torrington (and Hartnell, but he didn’t get as much attention) was truly remarkable, unlike any mummy people had seen before. It makes sense why this discovery would be shared around the world, but there was often a sense of morbid curiosity in the way it was presented.

ABC World News Tonight had Peter Jennings introduce a brief news story about Torrington’s exhumation by describing it as “like something from a Science Fiction movie” and “a bizarre story with images to match.” Torrington landed in the Science section of Time, a black and white version of his soon-to-be-famous photograph displayed prominently next to a short article title “Trapped in Time,” as if Torrington had been frozen alive and was now released, free to walk the earth again like the undead.

The same week Time published their short article, Newsweek published an article, “Answers from an Icy Grave,” three times as long as the piece in Time and with a color photograph to boot. Torrington’s picture was captioned “Sailor Torrington: Doomed expedition,” as if the macabre image of his frozen face didn’t properly convey the sense of doom by itself.

Then, of course, there was People.

At the end of each year, the popular magazine names 25 of the most intriguing people of the year. In 1984, John Torrington was granted the honor of being on that list. Flipping through pages filled with celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Richard Gere, Tina Turner, and even Bill Murray, you’ll find, just after a lovely picture of Vanessa Williams, the now famous black and white photo of Torrington’s frozen grimace staring back at you. His article gets two pages while poor Vanessa only gets one.

Looking at the media in late 1984, there was definitely a trend.

(Yes, I did buy all three of those. Apparently, there are plenty of people out there selling 35-year-old magazines—and enough of us weirdos willing to buy them.)

Not everyone was so supportive of the exhumation, however. In a letter to the editor in The Times in London, a man claimed to be “appalled” by the disturbance of the graves on Beechey. But he seemed to be in the minority. When Owen Beattie and his research team returned to Beechey Island in 1986 to autopsy Hartnell and Braine, they were accompanied by a documentary crew from Nova. Torrington’s image had captivated the world, and that meant the world wanted to see what else the permafrost of Beechey had to offer. Nova would air its documentary on the autopsies of Hartnell and Braine, “Buried in Ice,” in 1988. A picture of Torrington made a brief cameo, but Hartnell and Braine got to be the stars in this one.

And then there was the book, the book, the one that many a Franklin fan admits was the spark that lit the fire of obsession and that would inspire authors, artists, and even musicians. Frozen in Time, written by Owen Beattie and John Geiger, was first published in 1987, and it became a bestseller. It would later be revised, complete with an introduction by author Margaret Atwood, in 2004, and again in 2017, with bonus material about the discovery of Franklin’s ships. I have three different copies, which is a normal amount to have.

Interestingly, in an article from the Associated Press after the second round of exhumations, it was reported that two books would be published about the findings, and that there were thousands of photographs to be released. If there’s a place where I could find these thousands of photographs, I would be thrilled, but I’ve never stumbled across so many. And there was never a second book published, at least not about the Franklin Expedition. Beattie and Geiger would write about a different Arctic tragedy, the 1719 expedition of Captain James Knight. That book, Dead Silence, did not go on to have the same level of fame as Frozen in Time, but then again, it didn’t feature mummies and lead poisoning.

Okay, I know I just said there wasn’t a second book about the Franklin Expedition from Beattie and Geiger, but that’s not exactly true. There wasn’t a second book—unless you count the children’s book, Buried in Ice.

Buried in Ice wasn’t really a new book. It didn’t present any new information, it was basically just the condensed version of Frozen in Time for kids, because you know how kids love dark, morbid stuff. No, seriously, they do. Most books about mummies that I’ve found are geared toward kids, and, of course, who didn’t go through a dinosaur phase at some point in their youth? Kids love creepy stuff, so of course John Torrington graced the cover of a book meant to be read by middle schoolers, including one middle schooler who would bring the book home to show his younger sister, who would completely freak out and then many years later write a series of blog posts about the scary dead guy on the cover.

Oh yeah, and he’s on the back cover too:

Don’t worry, I don’t have three copies of this one. I only have two.

What? The hardcover came with a poster!

It’s not just kids who love creepy stuff. The morbidity of the topic has attracted many adults, too. The Franklin Expedition is a subject filled with darkness—two ships vanishing into the Arctic, a crew with no survivors, desperate men resorting to cannibalism after being driven mad by lead poisoning, bones lying scattered across desolate ground where men fell as they walked, and yes, the ice mummies. In her introduction to Frozen in Time, Margaret Atwood described Torrington as looking “neither fully dead nor entirely alive.” His half-open eyes suggest that he’s seconds away from opening them all the way, but the exposed teeth suggest that he’ll be lunging for your throat when he does. In the book Arthur C. Clarke’s Chronicles of the Strange and Mysterious, the Franklin Expedition gets treated as a bizarre mystery alongside the likes of spontaneous human combustion, and it’s a picture of Torrington that introduces the topic, an obvious attempt at playing up the spookiness of the subject. Many online articles and websites today also use the pictures of Torrington, Hartnell, and Braine to lure in viewers with the creep factor.

But Torrington didn’t solely become creepy, undead-looking, reader-bait—although there are those who have used him as such—he also became the poster boy for the expedition itself. Sure, it was Sir John Franklin’s expedition, but it was an ordinary, working-class sailor who managed to withstand the ravages of time and came to represent what the crew looked like to the modern world. In various documentaries, books, and articles about Franklin’s expedition, Torrington and the Beechey Boys usually get at least a brief shoutout, and whenever a picture is used of them, more often than not it’s Torrington. His frozen face—young yet somehow aged, alive yet dead—came to represent the tragedy of the story. He stood in for every sailor who left Britain, thinking they’d come home triumphant, but instead met their untimely fate far from the ones they loved. It literally put a face on the crewmen who ventured into the Arctic with Franklin, never to return. In a way, Torrington gained a second life, his story finally heard, his name not forgotten.
