the problem with DNIs isn't just that people are expected to enforce other people's boundaries for them (as described here), it's also that online spaces that utilize DNIs actively destroy the line between "identity" and "action".

For example: someone who ships fictional characters is a shipper. Someone who reads "gross" media is "gross". In this mindset, "doing the thing" means "being the thing".

I was once invited to a fandom server that explicitly said, "no shippers are allowed", and I found that terminology ill-fitting, cuz even though I "ship", this activity isn't part of my identity to the degree that I would label myself like that. I assumed that it was simply a poor word-choice and didn't think much of it. What else could it mean, other than asking people not to share shippy content or talk about it? Since fandom discords never really worked for me, but I didn't want to offend the person inviting me, I planned to stay without really engaging, and then quietly leave the server after a while. But somebody did the work for me, when I shared shippy content on my tumblr (NOT the discord) and somebody from the server must've found it and kicked me.

See, I didn't do anything. In the eyes of those server mods I was wrong, and that's the kind of shaming attitude that's harmful to everyone involved. If you subscribe to the idea that someone can, irrevocably, be wrong, then you can be too. It's the thing that makes queer people suicidal: People pointing fingers at them and telling them they are wrong/doomed/disgusting no matter what they do.

Who has time for that?

Here's a thought: don't harm yourself and others like this.

ETA: I probably should have mentioned what a DNI is. For those of you who are lucky enough to have never encountered this concept, DNI means "do not interact". In some online spaces, people write lists of kinds of people that are not allowed to interact with them or their posts/content. People publish their DNIs for example in their tumblr bio or on a site called "carrd", that seems to be mainly used for this sole purpose. If you fail to read the list in its entirety (which can be pretty extensive) and interact with a person/post/content in percieved breach of the DNI, you are claimed to be at fault.

The word "proship" is about as descriptive as "mutt" nowadays.

Lil disclaimer: This is only about me and my personal experiences. Call yourself whatever you like. It's your actions I will judge, not your label.

There are two reasons why I try to avoid directly labeling myself as "proship" or even "profiction" despite sharing many, if not all, of the views those terms are supposed to stand for.

I wrote about the first reason here.

This is the second reason:

I have seen the terms proship/proshipper/profiction used by real people in the following ways, NOT counting the things antis claim it means:

"Ship and let ship" / "Your kink is not my kink (and that's okay)"

"Not caring what other people like"

"Minding your own business"

"Curating your experience"

"Scrolling when your see something you dislike instead of making a fuss over it"

"Being into taboo subjects"

"Supporting all ships, including pedophilic or incestuous ones"

"Being against thought crimes"

"Anti-harassment over fiction"

"Anti-censorship"

"Fiction doesn't equal reality" / "Fiction isn't reality"

"Fiction doesn't affect reality at all"

"Being able to tell the difference between fiction and reality"

And then on top of that, a lot of neutral people are lead to believe it just means "pedophile / incest supporter", or someone who genuinely thinks minor/adult 'relationships' are healthy and fine.

➛ It's worth a brief note that it didn't originally mean literally any of these things (as documented on the Anti-shipper and Anti-anti Fanlore pages), but you didn't come here for a history lesson.

I've also seen the following behaviors from people who used being "proship" as a shield or justification for them:

Defending MAPs

Defending or participating in invasive RPF

Defending bigotry

Supporting real life incest

Doing "problematic shipping" with child characters played by actual minors

Making lust posts about characters played by child actors

Creating, consuming, or supporting uncomfortably realistic "lolicon"

Getting way too defensive against ANY criticism of a story, even when it's not framed in an aggressive, moralizing way.

And my favorite: Fucking harassing people for perceived "anti" views. -_-

I'm certainly not writing this with the intention of making all proshippers as a whole look bad, but I've had to come to terms with what that word has evolved into and what it means to people. It's gone out of my control despite how desperately I had wanted it to just mean what I think it should mean—what it did mean originally.

When one of my core identity labels can conjure up the image of any one of these things, especially when many of them are god awful, I feel a lot less comfortable using it for myself.

I use "anti-anti" comfortably enough because it doesn't refer to my potential stance on paraphilias, what ships I'm into, censorship or ""censorship"" (the bullshit right-wing boogie man version), or even simply the way fiction affects reality. It instead only refers to my stance against what antis stand for and what they do.

And we all know what they do.

I used to have this explained on my Carrd as a mere supplement to a long, long list of my specific beliefs regarding fiction vs. reality, kinks, and all that jazz. Then I realized how futile and silly it is to preemptively explain my entire moral compass on my literal central hub of Me-ness, because who am I really convincing of anything by having a BYF page that huge? It had a bunch of claims about what I believe, but no further essays linked that might back up how thoroughly I do believe those things. So it would end up just... kind of hollow.

So whenever I'm feeling spicy, I might just write more essays about various aspects of the discourse and keep those in a totally optional directory of sorts, probably still linked on my Carrd. I have a burning need to share my thoughts and writing with the world, but I certainly don't think someone needs to know all of that just to click Like on my art.

(Also some day I might make dedicated posts to each of the links I shared, but for now I just want some level of backup to my words in this post.)

where RP is concerned i heavily prioritize chemistry. for now, my blog is multi-ship, so any relationships my muse develops will take place in separate verses unless stated otherwise. that being said, although i absolutely love shipping, arlecchino is absolutely someone that's difficult to ship with because it's not romance is nowhere near her list of priorities... sooooo it'd require a lot of build-up and work.

DON'T involve me with drama OR send messages telling me to reblog callout posts or anything like that. i don't care for getting involved with petty roleplay drama. if it's something actually serious, i've already seen it on the dash and taken note. seriously, i will hardblock, anyone that pesters me with this nonsense.

He's kind of a menace but hes their menace. hes really bad at his job because he doesn't have the skills to utilize his fruits powers correctly. Law unfortunately sympathizes with them having childhoods that parallel at points. I do not have a self insert that i ship with Deuce. I have delusions about being Ace and we were partners

My GoBB self insert is named Eddie! Theyre an anteater who was made to work with disabled children and theyre shipped with Banban! I hope that doesnt sound weird I was in and out of sped classes as a kid so I wanted to reflect that.

This blog is aroace (and other identities on the spectra), mspec, MOGAI, neurodivergent, kin, neopronoun, and mspec gay/floric/lesbian friendly. I'm also open to drawing any* characters provided that either warriorsproject, cloudtail, gekkozilla, berrym00n, or eggfeather have drawn and posted them. Yes, that includes characters like Tigerstar 1, Thistleclaw, Brokenstar, Mapleshade, Spottedleaf, and the like

Please do not ask for icons using all five artists' work. I have accepted them in the past, but they are extremely draining and were partially responsible for at least one hiatus

Please check the list of characters with the same names before making a request, and please read the rules as well

I do not take requests for sapiosexual/morosexual icons, as the terms are rather ableist. I also do not take cisgender or heterosexual/romantic requests (the latter, however, I make exceptions for if it’s combined with an aspec identity or trans/nonbinary, as there are flags for heteraspec and transhet/enbyhet that I use; I also accept heteroflexible/elasexual and strayt requests, as well as mspec straight, straight gay/veldian/lesbian/velaurian, and all variants of bennetian/darcian/jaustenian)

I do accept "rabies pride"/rabiespunk because this is what it really means. The flag I use was made by @/neopronouns

I do not accept split-attraction requests for kits. This includes Badgerfang, as despite his warrior name, he was 3 moons old when he died. Basically, if they were under 6 moons at death, or we never got any implication that they grew up in some form, I will not accept split-attraction requests for them. Smallstar, Runningstorm, and Wolfheart are exceptions as they are shown fully grown in StarClan as the cats they should have been. Princess' kits are also exceptions because the family tree implies that they went to different owners and grew up

I don't have a DNI because I prefer liberal use of the block button. Do not come to me to discourse about ships like TigerFire and such, as ALL SIDES of that discourse trigger me. Also don't come and discourse over identities, please. Especially not mspec gay/veldian/turian/lesbian stuff until you've read through this carrd

I will make icons that deviate from canon identities, including canon LGBTQ+ identities, because the person could be requesting their favorite character with their identity, or they might be fictionkin and had a different orientation/gender in their canon. However, requests that diverge from a canon LGBTQ+ identity are preferred to be requested off anon

I use "veldian" and "turian" to mean gay man, as I've seen a couple of other blogs be told not to use "gay" to only mean "gay man". I use floric, turian, and gay man interchangeably. My gay man requests default to the blue/green gay man and the veldian flags, unless a specific flag is requested

I tag the word "queer" with #queer and #q power. Do not ask me to tag it as #q slur

I prefer not to use flags made by @/wuvsbian due to anti-MOGAI and exclusionist views, but if there's a flag by that user that you really resonate with, I'll allow it

Canon LGBTQ+ identities in the series include: vincian (mlm) Tallstar, Ravenpaw, and Barley, bi Jake, and aroace Mousefur

*When I say any character, I do still have a couple of exceptions. These are characters directly made in memory of or by fans. Do you have any advices on how I could start/carry my own self-ship blog? It wouldn't be J in my case, but someone a bit similiar to him (also a Batman/Gotham "villian"). I feel like I don't possess that level of creativity, do you maybe have some suggestions for me? How do you come up with so many amazing self-ship ideas, scenarios, etc. ?

First of all, I am so proud of you for reaching out and sending me these questions! I am so incredibly happy for you and your F/O and wish you the most wonderful time together🤗❤️ Never forget, your F/O always loves and adores you so much, no matter what!

Do you have any advices on how I could start/carry my own self-ship blog?

The most important thing is that you have fun and enjoy yourself. Self-shipping is about self-love, self-acceptance and self-care. You can create your own blog any way you want (as long as you don't harm yourself or others). Your blog is your little home and you should like it.

First, you should create a bio on your blog listing your status as a self-shipper and whether or not it is okay for you to share your F/O, meaning that others may interact with you if you have the same F/O.

As your first post, I would recommend making a list of all your F/Os (if you have more than one) and all possible ship names. In my case I use the tag "J and Sue" for all of my self-shipping posts.

You could also write some general information about you and your F/O in your first post, such as when and how you first met your F/O, why you love them, what you have in common, etc.

And you could pin this first post so it always appears first on your blog.

Instead, you could also create a "Carrd" with this information and then link it in your bio or in your first post. "Carrd" is a free platform to create one-page sites. You can use it for pretty much everything, including self-shipping.

You can then also start introducing your F/O by posting/reblogging pictures or gifs of them.

Also, you can follow other (self-shipping) blogs that interest you. But please make sure they are okay with it first. Most of them have linked lists with certain rules where they write who is allowed to interact with them and if they are comfortable sharing their F/O's - these are so called DNI/BYF lists. But don't worry, most self-shippers are really kind and friendly.

I feel like I don't possess that level of creativity, do you maybe have some suggestions for me? How do you come up with so many amazing self-ship ideas, scenarios, etc. ?

Don't worry, darling. You are definitely not uncreative. And the last thing you should do is force anything. As I said before, self-shipping should bring you fun and joy. Inspiration and creativity come and go. There are days when you could probably write a whole book about you and your F/O, but there are also days when you can hardly think about anything. But that's completely normal. It's nothing to worry about.

What I do is imagine everyday situations and then ask myself how my F/O would react. For example, what would you and your F/O do if you had a day off all to yourselves? Would you spend a few cozy hours inside, maybe watch a movie together and cuddle, or would you go out?

You can also develope your F/O's personality and biography and create your own headcannons about it. How much is known about your F/O? Does your F/O have a past? But also such things as your F/O's favorite food or favorite clothes are interesting.

I can also recommend you reblog self-shipping ask games. These are usually a series of questions that others can ask you about you and your F/O. I linked one here for you.

Of course, these are all just recommendations. But I hope that my answer might be a bit helpful for you, my love. So I’m finally getting around to do that aspec Q & A that @ace-and-aro-wlw-positivity posted, and I have quite a few aspec ocs so this could get rather lengthy but here we go

1. What was your inspiration for your character(s)? Are they modeled on yourself, a person that you know, or a character that’s already been established?

My first aspec oc, Abby Scott, was based on myself when I thought I was a biromantic ace girl. So she takes a lot after me. 

Theo Yamada, on the other hand, was a completely new character. I don’t exactly remember why I made him alloarospec, and I’ve been flipping from one arospec identity to the other, but no matter what he always remained alloaro. 

Mina Nicholson was my first character that I had predetermined to be alloaro from the start. She’s based on an old tumblr post about some super hero series idea called “Aces and Arrows.” I obviously didn’t make Mina into some superhero, but her guitar skills make her come pretty close :D. 

Brittany Olajobi is also based on an old tumblr post. Remember the “All or Nothing” idea thing that was floating around here?(Yes, I’m aware it turned into a scam, but I thought the premise was cute). Since no one actually made anything out of that I decided to make the characters my own. The asexual and pansexual girls were roomates....but also girlfriends. That idea kinda evolved into one of my newer series called “Play the Rainbow”, but that’s gonna take a while to explain.

Queenie Brooks...is based on a crude caricature someone made of an ace person (the “artist” has probably never talked to an ace person outside of tumblr but whatever), so I took that character and fleshed her out. She’s an aroace trans girl who’s evry big in activist circles, especialy the sex worker industry

2. How much, if any, has your character(s) changed since they were first created? What caused this change?

Abby and Brittany haven’t changed much besides in their appearance, Queenie and Mina underwent drastic appearance changes since they were created, and Theo’s kinda been going back and forth on the aromantic spectrum,  from strictly aro to demiromantic to aroflux. I’ve finally settled one greyromantic, which coinicdentially is what I identify as.

4. Do you intend on publishing your story one day? Why, or why not?

Probably not. I’m closeted in real life and likely to stay that way as long as I’m financially dependent on my parents.

7. Time to get serious for a bit. There’s been heavy debate on having non-human characters identify as ace, aro, non-binary, etc., but never actual humans. As someone who’s aspec, how would you explain to someone who’s allo why this can be and is seen as hurtful?

Ace and Aro people have been seen as inhuman and robotic for not feeling attraction, especially not in the same way that people who aren’t aro or ace do. Please reconsider making that animal/robot/alien oc aspec unless all or most of your characters aren’t human as well.

8. It’s a sad reality that many stories in mainstream media don’t have characters that are aspec, not to mention without resorting to harmful stereotypes. Besides there being nothing wrong with IDing as aspec, why did you choose to have your character ID as such? What would you tell other authors who’re interested in writing characters that are aspec, but are afraid of offending the community?

I make my characters aspec because. I’m aspec. Also there aren’t a lot of aspec representation (the little we get lol) that isn’t white or cis or yes, heteromantic./heterosexual. Considering the fact that I’m none of those things, all of my aspec ocs are poc like me, some even trans as well. To authours who want to write aspec characters but don’t want to offend the community, PLEASE ask around. Ask more than one person of that specific demographic. Their opinion should not be the only one that shapes yours! Also, if you’re writing an alloaro character, don’t ask someone who’s alloace or aroace. Similarly, don’t ask an alloaro person about writing alloace/aroace characters. Aspec people are not a monolith, our experiences are not the same

9. If you’re comfortable with sharing, what is your characters’ identity? Do they use any microlabels? Does theirs reflect your own?

Abby is a biromantic ace, Theo is a greyromantic bisexual, Mina is an alloaro bisexual, Brit is an ace lesbian, and Queenie is an oriented aroace trans woman.

11. Why do you think that not just representation is important, but GOOD representation? Can you offer any examples?

Fiction affects reality. Therefore, how people see us in the media affects how they see us in real life.

14. What’s a brief biography of your character? Is their history, personality, and/or looks similar to your own?

Uh I don’t necessarily have biographies for them but I have an oc carrd with their details

15. What are the themes of your story? Is it a lighthearted adventure, or are we talking deep, ocean-sized levels of angst? Why, or why not, did you choose them?

It’s a mix of light hearted fun and lots of angst. But everyone (who deserves it) gets a happy ending so it’s all good.

16. How long have you been writing? Has your style changed from when you first began to now? What are some tips you’d give to those who’re interested in writing a story of their own, be it professionally or as a hobby?

I’ve been writing since I was 8. I once won an honorable mention in a writing competition in the third grade believe it or not lol. My writing has definetely changed a lot, and that’s partially thanks to my English teachers I had along the way. My advice to people interested in writing a story on their own is to invest in a laptop/notebook and find time to write. Any time at all.

17. What’s your process for writing? Do you plan your story out first, write whatever you want then edit later, or both? How might this help others?

Planning? Ha! I write as I go. Sometimes I go back and edit entire scenes before publishing tho.

18. Your book’s become quite popular, easily reaching the New York Times Bookseller list, and now, you’ve been picked to lead a writing workshop. It goes swimmingly, and afterward, someone comes and tells you that your book not only inspired them to write a story of their own, but also helped them discover and accept their identity. What’s your reaction?

I’m...not good with compliments.

20. Just for fun, write down a paragraph of your most recent writing. It can be an action-packed scene, some witty dialogue, or a colorful description that you really enjoyed. (Be sure to properly tag any possible triggers!)

Here’s what I’ve started working on:

Theo smooths out the wrinkles on his blue uniform, giving himself a once over in the mirror. All his belongings of 5 long years were packed and ready to board on the ship the  higher-ups would issue to him He turns and takes down one last poster and rolls it up, placing it in his duffel bag. Perfect. Now all he had to do was go through the graduation ceremony and he’d get his first assignment. His hard work being at the top of his class was finally going to pay off.

“Heyyyy, my older twin’s looking sharp tonight!” Trent exclaims, leaning in the doorway with his own uniform in red. He whirls into the room, flopping on the now barren bed. “Ahh, this bed has so many memories. Come on, sit with me!”

“Trent, the ceremony’s so soon.”

“Theooooo,” he pouts. “This may be the last time we see this room, because we’ll be in space!”

He wiggles his fingers in Theo’s face for dramatic effect. The older twin chuckles, taking a seat on the bed.

“Let’s see,” Theo muses, tapping his chin thoughtfully. “I remember when we first got here. We were 10 years old, tiny, adorable and innocent little creatures. You were so terrified because they had put us in separate rooms.”

“I was not!” Trent argues. “It was just…a bit of a shock considering I always slept with someone else in my room instead of…all by myself.’

“Whatever. You crept into my room in the middle of the night, poked me awake and gave me the whole puppy-dog-eyes-and-quivering-bottom-lip routine to get me to beg me to let you sleep in my bed that night.”

“And you pretty much told me to go play in traffic,” he laughs. “And I still got in your bed anyway and slept there the whole night!”

“And you kept doing it until you turned 12!” Theo finishes with a playful shove.

A Moonlit Spring River: historical political romance about a eunuch sent to advise/observe an army general. This is the most recently posted of everything I'm reading, and only 22 chapters are up. The art is gorgeous and the (so far platonic) relationships between the characters are just starting to take shape. Without more available it's hard to say if this will be worth reading when all is said and done but so far I'm enjoying.

Antidote: based on a book by Wuzhe of the same name, Jie Yao/Antidote is about a rich young man who's been kicked out of his home and disowned, and the gangster/street thug he meets on his first night on his own. Warning for heavy themes, especially graphic violence, PTSD, panic attacks. I haven't read the book but I delayed reading this because I knew it got dark, and tbh I'm a little sorry I waited because it's really, really good and the art is gorgeous. I think the Carrd lists more warnings that might be past what's available in English and/or might only apply to the book. One of the better series I'm reading, though I have to be mentally prepared to read new chapters (it's NOT as heavy as I'm making it sound, I'm just fragile lmao). [Carrd]

Delighted to Meet You: historical/political. A young, innocent man meets a violent asshole on his first night in a new city and events unfold from there. Warning for prisoner/imprisoner and some other awkward dynamics between the main ship. I'd say this is among my least favorite titles I've read, but the innocent young man stands up for himself just enough that I didn't completely give up on. It's labeled as "complete" but the story doesn't feel completely done, nor has the main ship technically gotten together in the chapters that are available, but it's also not been updated and if there's more to come I couldn't say.

Demon Apartment: modern fantasy/mythology-based. A young, naive man (he really feels more like a boy at times, like he reads as 15 or 16 to me though supposedly he's in college and anyway It's Complicated re: his age) is given an apartment by his dad in a building that turns out to be a hiding place for mythical, demonic, and magical creatures trying to live in the modern world. I enjoyed how this started more than I've enjoyed how it's going in more recent chapters, and the art quality has also really slipped. Early on it had a fun general cast but it's gotten increasingly focused on the main ship, which has a less toxic relationship than I'd have expected given their age difference, power differential, etc., but still, it's...well. I'm not not enjoying it but I can't say I'd highly recommend this one.

Dinghai Fusheng Records: historical China/fantasy/cultivation. In a world where all cultivation was destroyed several hundred years ago, a young man goes into the world searching for his destined/fated protector, but when he finally finds him, nothing goes quiet as expected. This is a sort-of prequel to Tianbao Fuyao Lu (Legend of Exorcism), in that they are by the same author and set in the same 'verse, but you don't need to read one to understand the other. One of the first stories I started reading on Bilibili, and still one of my favorites. It's based on a book by Fei Tian Ye Xiang of the same name that I now very, very much want to read. The art is gorgeous, and done by Qianerbai, who used to be one of the official artists for Mo Dao Zu Shi. Definitely recommend this one, I eagerly await each new chapter, especially now that the main ship is starting to get somewhere. Warning that the young man in question is explicitly 16 in canon. Global Examination: future/dystopian with a mild sci-fi vibe. A group of strangers are brought together to take a mysterious exam that will determine their future and may lead to their deaths. Yes, it's BL. Yes, it's absolutely fantastic. Based on a book called Global University Entrance Examination by Mu Su Li. Warnings for amnesia, graphic depictions of violence, racism (anti-Romani), horror elements, and probably others I'm missing, but I've been guaranteed a happy ending by people who've read the book. It's so good and I swear every chapter it's getting better. I can't wait to find out what the fuck is going on, lmao. [Carrd]

Goodnight, Liang Xiao: modern office romance. An office worker who usually arrives at work early to exercise and shower panics when a co-worker also arrives early and sees WHY he doesn't work out or shower when others are there: the tattoos he usually hides under formal suits. This is a pretty standard office romance, but I'd say (having read a lot of het and shounen manga in this genre back in the day) this is a relatively good example of the genre. The stakes are low, the romance is solid, the communication is good. I especially appreciate that the characters are older; the tattooed half of the ship is...36? 37?...something like that, and the titular Liang Xiao is only a little younger. There's definitely some drama going on in the background that has me a little worried that this could take a turn I won't enjoy but so far, it's perfectly good as something low commitment and enjoyable to read.

The Grave Robbers' Chronicles Seven Dreams: modern with horror/fantasy elements. A young girl doesn't realize that something extremely weird is going on with her life - like, "accidentally kills her friends" levels weird - and Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, and Wang Pangzi, as children, come into the picture to help. This is an officially made AU of the main Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji/The Lost Tomb) stories. NOT BL. Though honestly you don't have to squint much to pretend it is, given who Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling interact. Warning for graphic violence, horror elements, and death of children. The update schedule for this has been fucking weird, they dropped like 20 chapters in three weeks and now haven't updated it in almost as long. It started out extremely wtf but I'll own it's been growing on me, but if you're not in the fandom I doubt it'd hold much interest to you.

The Grave Robbers' Chronicles: modern with horror/fantasy elements. A young man finds a weird map and ends up going on a strange adventure with his uncle to find a lost tomb. Warnings for graphic depictions of violence, horror elements, and so many freaky bugs. Speaking of Daomu Biji/the Lost Tomb, if you WERE interested in the franchise, you could do worse than getting an introduction to it through this series, which up until the most recently released chapter has closely mirrored the canon of the original book - it's much closer to canon than even the TV show adaptation - though the most recently released chapter (like 3 days ago) took a sharp turn toward not-canon (introduced a character who isn't in the books for several hundred pages) so...who knows? That said, I'm definitely enjoying reading another version of a series I love, and I'd recommend it to anyone curious about the 'verse. Heaven Official's Blessing: historical China/cultivation with gods. A once-fallen god ascends for the third time to a world very different than the one he left when he fell the second time, and meets a mysterious stranger cloaked in butterflies. I know you're already ready it but since I'm just making a list of everything I've read I might as well be thorough. I adore TGCF - it's one of my favorite books ever - so I originally downloaded the Bilibili app so that I could read this, and it hasn't disappointed. It recently started updating again after a hiatus (at least the...fourth...hiatus it's had since I started reading?) and continues to stick pretty close to the book source material. People tend to have a love/hate relationship with Starember's art. I personally love it (though not without caveats) and basically I'm always so happy to have a new chapter. I Ship My Rival x Me: modern, celebrity. A young actor with a poor career and a low opinion of his own acting skills meets a fellow actor that internet fandom has often portrayed as his "rival," and ends up getting involved in his and the other actor's own RPF ship fandom. I'm so, so glad that I'm reading this, it's so much fun. The main ship is fucking adorable, and every chapter makes me smile. It just ended a plot arc in yesterday's update, so I don't know if it's about to go on a hiatus, but if it is this might be a good time to catch up. Definitely highly recommend. [Carrd]

Me and My Zoo: modern with magic/mythological/fantasy elements. A young man unexpectedly inherits a failing zoo, and starts getting missions on his phone telling him how to improve the zoo...and each time he succeeds at a mission, another god or mythological creature from the Chinese pantheon joins his zoo as a shapeshifting animal. This is the longest manhua I've read on Bilibili so far (over 150 chapters) and is mostly a slice-of-life, low-stakes comedy. There's very little drama and basically nothing ever goes wrong for long. That makes it a very feel-good experience, and it's often funny, though some of the arcs drag a little. It's based on a book that I want to find and read, because Bilibili lists this as "done" even though in 150+ chapters the main ship still hasn't gotten together (though there have definitely been hints). Not that easy a title to recommend just because it's so...what it is?...but if what I've described sounds like something you'd like I'd say go for it, it's definitely a casual and fun read but given how long it takes to get through 150+ chapters with Bilibili's restrictions (it took me months...). My Boss is a Goddess: modern fashion/celebrity story. A young intern at a fashion magazine finds himself bullied into working for his scary boss, even as he develops feelings for one of the label's most popular (female) models. Warning for a manhua/manga-stereotypical approach to men wearing "women's" clothing/"cross-dressing." Ultimately harmless? By the end especially the main ship had a cute dynamic, but if a lot of standard genre tropes for modern romance stories don't appeal, this would probably be a skip. Note that it's completely done, so the whole thing can be read.

My Four Backup Dancers and I: after saying something rude about the other singers in his boy band, a lead singer is sent to a reality show to improve his image...and while there he has to share a room, and a bed, with his band-rival. Nothing all that special, but also harmless. If you like modern celebrity-based BL type stuff, it's fun and fluffy. Bonus, the complete series is on Bilibili so you can read it all. For another series doing something similar but (imo) better, see I Ship My Rival x Me.

Pixiu's Eatery, No Way Out: modern fantasy story about gods and god-like creatures, about Pixiu who has been trapped on earth, his fued with Taotie, and a ghost he's found who has a mysterious past. Warning for panic attacks and PTSD. This is the only one I'm not caught up, and so far I'm enjoying it a lot, but I've only read about a quarter of what's available so it could still go very wrong, lmao.

Saved the Public Enemy By Mistake: historical fantasy/cultivation, not apparently set in fantasy China. A renowned doctor finds the demon of the cultivation world dying on his doorstep, and saves him before he realizes who it is. Warnings for graphic depictions of violence, mindfuckery, involuntary body modification, amnesia, cannibalism, and probably some others I'm not thinking of. This is...a tremendously difficult manhua to describe. I'm almost 90 chapters in and, uh, the main ship just tried to kill each other? The art is absolutely gorgeous, but even when I was catching up and could read chapters quickly, I was often confused. It feels sometimes like every alternating page is missing. Now that I'm reading it as chapters come out I'm even more lost a lot of the time, and yet I'm still reading it so make of that what you will. Note that there's a prominent wlw side ship.

A Single Strike of Shimmering Frost: historical political China with cultivation and mystery elements. Searching for information about a theft from his brother the Emperor, a prince of China recruits the leader of a spy sect by promising the cure to the leader's illness...except he doesn't actually have the cure. Warnings for violence, graphic descriptions of a rape, lots of minor character death, a constantly sick/ailing main character, harm to children and mentions of death of children, torture, abuse by a parental figure. I really enjoyed this story, despite some issues with specific parts of it, BUT. Bilibili claims it's finished, and no new chapters have come out, and where things left off (SPOILERS) the sick half of the ship is still dying from his illness so. Uh. I think I'm gonna have to find the original book on this one?? I enjoyed especially the mystery elements and how the main couple end up solving several cases together.

Tianbao Fuyao Lu (Legend of Exorcism): historical political China with cultivation and demons. A young half-demon man raised by the demon friends of his dead father gets told by them that he needs to go to the capital and join the Exorcism Department. This is a sort-of sequel to Dinghai Fusheng Records, in that it's also by Fei Tian Ye Xiang and is set in the same 'verse hundreds of years later. You do not need to be familiar with one to read the other. It has absolutely stunning art and I've really been enjoying it and definitely want to read the book, BUT the artist left and as far as they know haven't been replaced, so it's incompletely and decently likely to stay that way forever. That said, I'm reading it anyway. There's also a donghua of this available (on Netflix, no less!), AND the book, so there's also a lot of to get into with this one. [Carrd]

Those Years in Quest of Honour Mine: historical political. After years of pretending to a relationship with a well-known figure in the capital as a way of protecting himself, a young exiled man and his adopted father's orphaned children returns to the capital and has to deal with the repercussions of lying about his relationship status for years. I had read the book of this, and was super excited to discover there was a manhua; it was the second title I started reading on Bilibili, and it being there as well as Tian Guan Ci Fu is part of what got me using Bilibili on the daily. I really enjoyed the book for this, and I'm really enjoying the manhua too. It's a fairly faithful retelling. Warning for a sickly main character, a drug addict love interest, and a lot of miscommunication. [Carrd]

Your Distance: modern college setting. After a break-up with a long-time partner, an engineering graduate student lets a friend convince him to get an online relationship using the Your Distance app, which tells matched partners how far apart they are from each other. He deliberately picks someone far away so the relationship will be low stakes...so is shocked when the next day the app says they're only a few kilometers apart. Warnings for student/professor relationship and age difference. I'm enjoying this series, though it's holding my interest less now because it doesn't really seem to be going anywhere? It's pretty much settled into slice-of-life for the main couple since they've gotten together. Still, it's harmless enough, but if it goes much longer with nothing new developing I might wander off, not because it's bad but because it kinda feels...done. *shrug* [Carrd]

The Crown Prince: historical political. WARNINGS FOR NON-CON, SIBLING INCEST, GRAPHIC VIOLENCE. The crown prince is deposed and sent to prison, where the new crown prince - his younger brother - assumes control of his imprisonment and punishment. This was on Bilibili until a few weeks ago, and it's going away has (not gonna lie) left me pretty sad. Despite the warnings (which I had no warning of, going in) I really liked this. The art is spectacular, and it hit my twincest + one Supernatural Deanjimstiel buttons like whoa. The entire series was on Bilibili, which made it a satisfying read to get all of, and, well. It very much felt like a return to dark!yaoi manga I used to read, circa 2004, which makes sense because the book it was based on was apparently written in 2009. If it came back to Bilibili, and those warnings aren't deal breakers (if, like me, you see those warnings and go *vibrating eye emoji*) I'd definitely recommend it.
