the other thing I find very funny about trying to write a canon compliant wol is taking all the wolship hints extremely seriously.
I don't really wolship because I'm just fundamentally not that kind of fan. But I know for those who are, the sheer number of romance hints FFXIV throws at you can be overwhelming to parse in a context where you have a preferred/intended wolship, particularly if you're not attracted to the gender the hints are coming from in the first place (a particular tip of the hat to wlw fans navigating the g'raha of it all). I've seen plenty of people write around them or write them out or be like "no aymeric was for real inviting my wol to a nice platonic zero-subtext dinner," and God bless all of you.
But it's really funny to imagine them all as all-too-real but unreciprocated or perhaps unreciprocatable. The sheer scale of it is comedy. Spoilers for all of FFXIV follow.
Oh God, the Lord Speaker wants to have dinner, just the two of us, at his family estate and not a government building. I hope he doesn't bring up his crush on me. Thal's balls he's about to bring it upâoh thank God there's an emergency. Oh no someone got hurt! Oh no it's the teenage girl with a crush on me.
Your life is a cosmic joke. You watch the Sultana get poisoned and all your friends probably die to save your life and it's kind of all your fault in some ways, I mean at the very least you should've spoken up when they gave the teenager a private army, and then the teenage boy speaks up and is like, "hey, I guess we have at least one ally. What about if we go visit that guy who is really obviously down unbelievably bad for you and wants to lick the sweat off of you." and you have to be like, yeah, Alphinaud. Great idea. Let's do it. I'll call him.
(brief interlude: also haurchefant's DEATH hits so good if you don't reciprocate. It's okay. He gets it. You're going through a lot and even if you had time to sort through your feelings maybe you're just not into him. That would be okay! You can love someone, or the idea of someone, without needing it to be romantically reciprocated. That's chivalric, even. Knightly. So he won't ask you to lie to him and say you love him as he lies dying in your arms. He's not so low as all that. But could you smile for him as you used to? That true hero's smile of yours. And you do, and he dies. And you both know he died for a lie, in a way, or a flight of fancy. And he's okay with that. Are you? Should you be? Should he?)
Then you're into Stormblood and it's like wow, okay. That last part was all high fantasy, of course there were loyal knights and elegant princes. But this is war. Imperialism. Grim business, surely there's no wayâoh no BOTH handsome young revolutionary leaders seem to have a special interest in you?! And so does the Crown Prince of the Empire? Come on, man. I should get to do the whole horrors of war thing without having to also deal with this. Gaius sucked and it was weird that he let his foster daughter run around being openly obsessed with him but at least he never made it my problem.
You can't even get away from it across dimensions. Shadowbringers is a horror story about going on a teambuilding camping trip with your work colleagues for some reason except they all suddenly got really hot and they keep touching you affectionately on the shoulder and being like "I care for you and your happiness. Truly." And also you're being stalked for the whole camping trip by two old men who are obsessed with you. The false climax of the story is that the one old man tries to betray you and give a dramatic monologue about how he loves you but the two of you are doomed by the narrative and then the other old man shoots him in the back like "no actually its MY turn to betray them and give a dramatic monologue about how our love is doomed by the narrative." Then the real climax is old man #1 backstabbing old man #2 in the middle of said monologue before old man #2 dies and gives ANOTHER wistful monologue about his doomed love. Then for the patches they're like okay so we have this even CRAZIER old man who's gonna strike when you're weak and give a dramatic monoloâ
and that's without even getting into the literal soulmate ghost only you can see
my warrior of light never felt more betrayed than in that scene where Y'shtola is like "haha Alisaie and G'raha have crushes on the warrior of light." Like I thought we were COOL, Y'shtola! I work here! This situation is already in such a delicate balance! Right when I got here I met Alisaie's "friend from work" who was like oh haha so YOU'RE the one she can't stop talking about and we never followed up on that because the woman died horrifically like five minutes later right in front of us! Then when Vauthry got away and we had to do all that shit with the dwarves, G'raha kept pausing every ten minutes to be like oooooh I'm so old I'm gonna die soon...at least I got to spend some time with some people who are really important to me...in fact here's what I'd tell the person who's most important to me...actually u know them really well haha. And I just had to sit there and be like wow, dude, crazy.
even in the face of apocalypse you still gotta go back in time like 12,000 years and there's somewhere there who makes you sit and listen to his story which is that the purpose of his whole godlike immortal life was to be in a throuple with you and old man #2 from the camping trip. and you just gotta sit there the whole time knowing you/your past life is the one who broke up the throuple over politics. He's like come help me harangue the old man into streaking in public, he'll do it if you ask.
then you meet and fight and kill God and you gotta turn to the team and be like hey sorry guys can you give me a sec. I'm gonna call God by her real name because we met one time for like four days and after that the promise of meeting me again was one of the things that sustained her through her millennia of suffering. Not like that but like. Idk. Just gimme a sec!
It's a relief when you finally get to Lahabrea and he's like actually I still don't fuck with your vibe. Like thank GOD.
And my WoL is very obviously dad-shaped so Dawntrail had a very specific energy for me but I understand that for plenty of people your deepening rapport with Wuk Lamat had a romantic subtext (same for Koana depending on how you read a few of his lines). And personally I think it's the height of comedy to be like, noooo, babe, your highness, I know you and your brother the king are in love with me and want me to stick around and support you emotionally through this governmental transition haha. But it's just...the cursed wineglass, babe. I GOTTA go figure out what's up with this cursed wineglass.
It's a running gag in some of the more optional content that people are like "you have an unreasonable number of hobbies and side gigs" to the WoL from time to time. But if every time you tried picking up a new hobby some new elf started baring their soul to you, you too would be like Hey Jessie (or sometimes Krile or Tataru), my good friend who is one of the only people in my life who knows what professional ethics and work-life boundaries are, any chance you need muscle on a gig on the other side of the world? Ideally with only Cid and his ex so all libidinal energy in the room is directed towards machinery or someone who isn't me?
ironically one of the only places you get a break from psychosexual obsession is the nier content

Apples
Pairing: Luke Castellan x Reader
Summary: You tossed an apple to Luke without knowing the meaning of it in Greek Mythology (fluff, friends to lovers, happy ending)
Note: Just wanted to write something lighthearted and funny. Since I saw somewhere that apparently throwing an apple at someone means something in Greek Mythology, thought I should use it as a prompt.
Word count: 3.1k
You have been at Camp Half-Blood for a year. Within that time, youâve been claimed by your Godly parent, learned so many things about Greek mythology, and, best of all, made friends who understood exactly what you were going through and all whom you loved dearly.Â
One of them was Luke Castellan. You two were relatively close friends, though you swore he treated you differently than he would with others at camp. But you didnât want to be foolish and assumed it was something. That didnât mean you donât treat him differently than you would with other campers though. You have always had a soft spot for Luke in your heart. You werenât exactly sure when it happened, but you found yourself thinking about him too often.
âAnyway, Percy. Donât worry too much, honestly. We all have been through what youâre currently going through. Youâll fit right in, yeah?â the younger boy offered you a lope-sided smile as you patted his back and stood up.Â
âAlright, boys, I have to go now, but Iâll see you later,â you said before grabbing your plate, which would have been empty if it wasnât for the apple you hadnât eaten. The rest of the table - which included Chris, Luke, and Percy - said their goodbyes before chattering again as you walked away. However, you halted as you changed your mind about wasting the apple.
You turned back to look at the group before calling out, âHey, Castellan.â However, you were slightly caught off guard to see Luke already having his eyes on you.
Luke swore that you have always had him mesmerized. If he even heard a whisper of your voice, his head would immediately try to locate you. To make matters worse, Chris even started calling Luke a âlost puppyâ when he realized how your departure would always leave Luke like one.Â
âCatch,â you tossed your apple at Luke.Â
Multiple heads turned in your direction as the red apple hurled through the air before landing neatly in Lukeâs hands. The Hermes cabin counselor had his eyes glued onto the fruit that was in his palms. You almost halted in your steps from his and other camperâs reactions. Some started whispering to their friends, pointing at you. You even heard one gasp. But you ignored them, finding it strange that people cared so much about such a small interaction.
âYou can have it. I donât think Iâll have time to eat it,â with that, you vanished from the scene, leaving at least half of the camp agape, including Luke and your friends.Â
Then, the strangest of things happened for the next few days. It started with Luke already stationed outside when you exited your cabin the morning after. He cheekily presented you with one singular flower in his hand, and you took it with playful words, âOoh, what did I do to deserve this special treatment today?â
âNothing, just thought I should show how much I appreciate you,â Luke put his arm over your shoulder as the two of you made your way to the dining pavilion. You could feel your cheeks flushing at his action. He has never done this before. With his arms around you, the sides of your bodies brushed as the two of you walked. You noticed almost immediately how every other person would have their eyes on the two of you. But you ignored the attention and focused on Luke instead.
The sweet actions didnât stop at flowers or more physical touches. For the next three days, Luke was stuck to your hip. So it was quite strange that you have not spotted the Hermes cabin counselor in the last two hours. Hence why you were spending some time with Clarisse, another close friend of yours. However, you felt an arm swinging around your shoulders, and you instantly recognized who it was from the familiar touch.
âHey, Clarisse, can I borrow Y/N real quick?â Luke asked, quickly muttering a âthank youâ when your friend nodded. âSo, I have something to give youâŚâ your face must have shown how surprised you were because he chuckled at your reaction. However, when the boy pulled his gift out from his cargo pocket, your mouth fell slightly agape at the reveal.Â
Luke must have misinterpreted your reaction because he started nervously rambling, his voice a few octaves higher, âItâs not much, but honestly, this is all I can do with my arts and crafts skills. Iâm just not really good with that y-â
âItâs perfect, Luke. Thank you so much!â you gave him a brief hug, but it was enough to stun him for a second. Luke felt this urgent sense of craving from how your bodies fit for a second. Itâs as if he was made to hold you. He almost pulled you back into another hug but had to force himself to regain composure. Nevertheless, that didnât last long because his eyes softened again at the sight of you trying on the bracelet he made. The beads in your favorite color, crafted with care, wrapped around your wrist perfectly, and you wonder how he knew just the right size to make it.
The truth was Luke had to ask Clarisse to steal one of your bracelets just so he could make a bracelet of the correct size. But you didn't need to know that, though - according to him.
The next night, there was a social gathering near the campfire. Luke reapproached the location with a hoodie in hand. Earlier, Luke excused himself to fetch the clothing item that was now in his hand that was meant for you. However, his brows scrunched as he spotted another figure next to you, sitting in the spot that he previously occupied. You were laughing at something they said. The way your laugh echoed in his head usually sounded like a lullaby or the enchanting voice of a siren. But right now, the idea that someone else elicited the same laugh made him want to hurl behind the bush he was standing next to.
Little did he know you were zoning out from whatever the other boy was speaking about, thus the fake laugh to not blow your cover. You were distracted just thinking about Luke and everything he has done so far - offering his portion of dessert to you because he knew it was your favorite; him winning Capture the Flag and ignoring everybody else to go hug you first, then having his eyes on you and only you afterwards; sneaking out of camp to go buy the items you mentioned once that you wish you had at camp and so on.Â
Your mind quickly reminded you that the boy sitting next to you was still talking to you. However, when you snapped out of your thoughts again, you realized now he was looking at you expectantly and you scrambled your mind for a reply.
Thank Gods Luke plopped down on your other side, saving you from having to admit to the other boy that you were not listening to him. âHey, youâre back,â you commented. Lukeâs arm automatically threw itself around your shoulder and tugged you to him slightly. Your body leaned on the Hermes cabin counselor ever so naturally at this before you turned to him. Luke quickly set his clothing on your lap, and you stared at it questioningly.
âYouâre cold, right?â
âOh, yeah,â your cheeks flushed again at how he knew without you telling him. You shivered maybe once or twice earlier due to the night air lowering the temperature, but it was so brief you were sure nobody had noticed. As you put on the hoodie, Luke averted his gaze from you to the guy on your other side.Â
The Hermes cabin counselor arched one of his eyebrows in a challenging manner. Almost immediately, his âopponentâ slightly raised both of his hands. Luke internally snickered at the quick motion of surrender.Â
âMy bad, man,â you heard the other boy say as you managed to put your head through the clothing item and pull it down. Luke was physically preening at the other boyâs words and departure. Meanwhile, you were distracted by how you were engulfed by the smell of Luke from his hoodie. Your height difference also meant you were swimming in it, but it felt so comfortable.
âWhat was that?â you asked once the other boy was gone.Â
âNothingâŚâ even the most oblivious person could see that Luke was lying. But, once again, you did not question his actions and carried on with the gathering. You could also feel other campers staring at the two of you, but you ignored that as well.Â
That night - like every other night since four days ago - he walked you back to your cabin. You were honestly completely smitten by the attention he has given you, not that you would admit that to him. You were still not sure what caused the change, but you were still elated about it. Maybe he did return your feelings? Either way, everything felt perfect lately, and you went to sleep that night feeling like the stars aligned for you.
âI guess congratulations are in order?â Percy spoke up as you lined up for food the following day.Â
âWhat do you mean?â you asked, taking the plate of food. Todayâs meal consisted of mac nâ cheese, steak, and an apple.Â
âYouâre engaged?â you almost dropped your plate at that and gave the son of Poseidon a questioning look. âYou proposed to Luke like a week ago?â
âWhat? When?â
âWhen you threw him the apple? That is considered a marriage proposal.â
âSince when?â
âUh, in Ancient Greek culture, itâs considered a marriage proposal if a man throws an apple at a lady. But, I mean, itâs the 21st century, so I guess it can work both ways.â Percy finally took a plate of food for himself. âAnd if the recipient catches it, itâs considered an acceptance.â
âYou saw this and knew this whole time without telling me?!?âÂ
âI thought you knew! And you two seem so smitten already, so I thought you did it on purpose.â
âPercy, no! Is this a well-known thing? Do you think other people who saw it too thought I proposed to Luke as well?â Seeing Percyâs look and how he was fumbling with his words, you quickly requested, âActually, no, donât answer that.âÂ
The two of you walked over to Luke and Chris with plates in hand. You picked up the apple on your plate and placed it on the table.Â
âLuke, we need to talk,â You deliberately placed the fruit there, hoping the boy would get a hint about the topic you wanted to discuss. Lukeâs eyes flicked from the fruit to you. Though the hint of amusement in his eyes and a sheepish grin made you realize he knew all along. Luke stood up and followed you out of sight and hearing distance from other campers whose eyes were trailing after the two of you.
âYou knew what it meant, and you didnât tell me?â You broke the silence as soon as you two were far away enough.Â
âListen, I appreciate your proposal. But, itâs a little bit fast, donât you think?â Luke teased, and you instantly hit his arm at that, causing the boy to flinch slightly, but the smile on his face told you he was anything but mad at your action.
âBut you caught it. So, technically, you said yes,â you rebutted, sighing as you rubbed your face, âMy Gods, does everybody at camp think weâre engaged? Wait, is this a substitute for an engagement ring? Did you give this to me because of that?â you pointed to the bracelet Luke gave you, your mind now understanding Clarisseâs teasing and her implications. You could see the way Luke was stifling a laugh. He settled with saying something else when he saw the pure panic on your face.
âSweetheart, calm down.â the nickname successfully silenced you. You hated how it made you feel, but you would not mind hearing that daily. âNo, itâs not an engagement ring.â
âOh, so were you doing all of these romantic gestures and gifts on purpose to make fun of me and the situation?â you asked, though it was more with a lighthearted tone than one of temper. However, something shifted because the expression on Lukeâs face changed from one of humor to earnestness.
âNo, I didnât do all this to make fun of the situation or youâŚâ Lukeâs voice fell off as tried to find the right words to say next. In that split second, Luke took a deep breath, and you could see how nervous he suddenly became, though he still kept a light tone. âI did it because I took it as a chance to maybeâŚwin you over, and it also gives me an advantage because it fended off many other guys.âÂ
Undoubtedly, you were frozen in place, unable to register the words he was saying and the implications they bear. Neither did the boy in front of you act like the Luke you usually know - somebody who was usually confident, outgoing, always having his way with words. No, the person in front of you could not even hold eye contact, the pink hue on his cheeks now spreading to the tip of his ears as he shifted left and right. Luke broke the silence first, giving away the nerves that were gnawing him away from your lack of response.
âHow about this? Iâll say ânoâ to your mind-blowing marriage proposal for now,â you lightheartedly hit him again, rolling your eyes playfully. Seeing a positive reaction from you, Luke let out a small breath of relief, but the nerves quickly overtook again as he mustered up all the courage to utter his counter proposal: âBut maybe we could start with something slower like going on a date? â Or Iâll even settle with you allowing me to try and âwooâ you.â Luke added the last bit as insurance, in case you didnât want to take up on the date. Part of his mind wanted to scowl at himself for seeming so desperate - but Gods, he has always been a desperate man when it comes to you.Â
âYouâre such a dork.â
âYet you still proposed to me.â
âYouâll never let me live that down, will you?â Luke only shook his head in response. Once again, you havenât responded to his offer. Luke could see that you were in deep thought, the cogs turning in your head as you digested what he just said.
âYou mean it? That you wanna go on a date? That you wanna âwooâ me and sweep me off my feet?â you questioned. Despite the humor in your voice, there was also a hint of vulnerability and cautiousness. âDoes this mean what youâve been doing for the past few daysâŚthey are all genuine?â
âIs it that hard to believe that I like you? I donât think you even fully understand the feelings I have for you. Iâve had my eyes on you for a year now, which is the entire time I know you, and Iâm afraid I canât see that changing any time soon.â Luke had to bite his tongue to prevent himself from saying more because he was sure he would never stop talking about you if he could. Maybe those unspoken words ought to be things Luke would disclose in the future. If you give him the chance, he will ensure you hear everything he adored about you.
âWell, thatâs good then, âcause I happen to like you too,â your words made Lukeâs eyes snap to yours, almost in disbelief.Â
Luke felt as if his heart was blocking his airway by the way it was thumping so hard in his chest to the point he could feel the vibration in his neck. He held his breath over your confession and the way you were looking at him. Oh, Luke was convinced he was utterly doomed because how could he be so affected by one single look. He was suddenly unsure whether he would be able to handle your affections or ever live without it if it was taken from him. Heâd spend the rest of eternity like a deprived man.
âAw, look who is nervous now,â you teased, deciding to somewhat torture him and get him back for teasing you earlier. âI did not think I had this kind of effect on you, Castellan,â you approached him slowly, keeping eye contact with his now dilated pupils.Â
âI meanâŚall I did was say a couple of words and youâre all tongue tied. What would happen to you if I do this?â you swiftly grabbed Lukeâs camp beads and pulled him down, eliminating a significant amount of space between your faces, though not completely. To steady himself during your action, Lukeâs hands steadied on your hips and stumbled slightly, though you did not mind the touch.
You never knew it was possible for his face to flush even more, but it did. Luke gulped and your eyes casted down on the way his Adamâs apple moved when he did so. The way he reacted to you only intoxicated you with power even more. You glanced upwards a bit, eyes observing his lips for a split second before looking back up at his eyes. You smirked when you caught his eyes flickering back to yours from your lips as well.Â
Just as you were about to close the distance, Luke pulled back just a bit, finally able to speak, though his words were heavy warnings, âIf this happensââ Luke stopped, unsure he should let you know. Luke shook his head lightly as his eyes traced over your features before continuing, âIf we kiss, there is no going back for me. I donât think I could justâŚforget about it. So, please, just be sure before you do it.â Your eyes softened at his words.
âI promise, Luke. I am sure,â you muttered, though Luke knew you meant the words by heart from the way you were looking at him.Â
You finally pulled the boy down again using his camp necklace.Â
As your lips touched Lukeâs, he let out a content sigh. His hands clung onto your hips, pulling you flush against his own body while you caressed both sides of his face in your hands. Luke felt like the world was swallowing him whole. The boy now knew what your lips tasted like, and it felt like an addiction. He could feel his heart waving white flags at that moment, completely surrendering to you. He was right before. There was no going back from this.Â
But oh, if Luke knew an apple was all it took, he would have tossed one to you himself.

AUTHORâS NOTEÂ |Â Hi. Hello again. At this point, Jaehyun should be my bias with the amount of content I write about him. LOL. Anywho, you don't have to read them, but if you did, I mentioned Kun's triplets and Xiaojun's little son. Anyway, here's to Dad Jaehyun! Donât forget to like, comment, reblog and show some support. Love you all đ
"Mommy! Mommy!"
You let out a groan and buried your head in the pillows. Your little son is already running a muck, screaming the house down. You could hear him stomping up and down the corridor, but he's not coming into the room. Not yet, at least. But he sounds pretty eager and excited so no doubt that in the next few moments, he's gonna burst in.
"Mommmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Daaaaaaddddddyyyyyyyy!"
You tried to bury yourself further in your blankets. Hoping they would swallow you and leave you to peacefully go back to bed. You reached out and smacked your husband's sleeping back. "Go get the brat."
Jaehyun snorted and rolled over. "He's your brat."
"You made the brat, you deal with him," you grunted.
"You were there too, honey. It takes two."
"Jae-" Your words got cut off as you heard your son bang against your bedroom door and throw it open. The first thing your eyes landed on when you lifted your head to peek was your son's bright, joyful, excited smile. Jaewoo, ran into your room, jumping on the bed. He was giggling and his little arms wrapped around your body as he smooched your cheek.
"Good morning Mommy!" he chirped.
"Morning baby." You kissed his cheek back.
Your son looked over to Jaehyun who was lying still with his eyes closed, trying to ignore him. "Morning Daddy!"
"Daddy is asleep." Jaehyun mumbled.
"Nuh-uh! I saw you smile!" Jaewoo shouted excitedly.
"Nope. Daddy's asleep." He deadpanned, while a smirk stretched across his lips.
"Wake up then!"
"Nooooo."
You laughed and ruffled your son's hair before poking your husband's cheek. "You have to do it eventually, Jae. You know how he is."
Your son giggled and jumped on Jaehyun's back. He sat there and shook his daddy awake, trying to pull off the blanket covering him. You both share a laugh, loving the determination your son has. He's cute when he's eager. "Daaaaaddddyyy!"
"Oof," Jaehyun grunted.
"Wake up Daddy!"
"You heard your child Jae." You teased.
"Waaaake up Daddy!"
"I'm awake! I'm awake!" Jaehyun exclaimed and tickled his sides, making the little boy squeal and kick.
You watched them both, feeling happy and warm. You had your doubts about being a mother. But your husband helped you through it all, and you have never been more thankful for him than when you held your baby for the first time.
"Are we going to the zoo today?" Jaewoo asked excitedly.
"If it's not raining," you answered. "It's supposed to rain."
"Awww," Jaewoo pouted.
Jaehyun poked his stomach. "We can camp out in the living room if it rains. We'll play games, make a tent, and read a lot of books."
Jaewoo's eyes lit up. "And we can make cookies and have popcorn!"
You chuckled and hugged him. "That sounds like a good idea, baby."
"Alright!" Jaewoo exclaimed and climbed off the bed. "I'll get ready!"
He ran out of the room, and you rolled over to face your husband. You leaned forward and kissed him gently. "Let's get up so we can entertain the little man."
"I love you." Jaehyun grinned.
"I love you too." You pecked his nose and kissed the corner of his lip before you pulled away to stand up.
You put on a shirt and went to check the window. The skies looked somewhat clear but you didn't want to take the chance, so you made a mental note to bring an umbrella, ponchos, and anything that would prevent your family from getting sick. You stretched your limbs before heading into the bathroom. Jaehyun joined you, wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his chin on your shoulder.
"We did a good job with him, didn't we?" He muttered, pulling you towards his body. He held onto you tightly, hugging you close and enjoying the sensation of your skin rubbing against his.
"Yes, we did." You breathed and kissed his cheek. "Yes. I can't wait to see how much he grows."
"Me too." Jaehyun kissed your cheek.
After you were showered, dressed, and ready, you and Jaehyun headed down to the kitchen. Your son was sitting at the table, coloring a picture of a lion.
"Whatcha doing, Jaewoo?" Jaehyun asked, ruffling his hair.
"Drawing lions." Jaewoo grinned.
"You'll see real lions later." You told him, kissing his head.
"I want to go now." Jaewoo pouted.
"Breakfast first, bud," Jaehyun replied.
Jaewoo continued drawing and coloring, while you and Jaehyun began making breakfast. You cooked the pancakes while he cut up fruit. The smell of bacon filled the air, and Jaewoo started sniffing and looking around.
"Mmm, something smells good!" He exclaimed and bounced over to you. He put his head on the edge of the counter and gazed longingly at the food.
"Wash your hands first, baby," you reminded him and pointed towards the sink. "And use soap."
"Okay, Moooom!" Jaewoo did as told but ended up splashing a bunch of water on the floor. Jaehyun just laughed.
"He's just as messy as you." He said, drying your child's hands, while you made him his plate. "Want juice?" He asked.
Jaewoo nodded. Jaehyun went to pour his kid a glass while you set down a plate with 2 large pancakes, eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. "Here, my little man, enjoy."
Jaewoo dug into his breakfast, his mouth full of pancakes and syrup. You and Jaehyun ate a bit slower, enjoying the peace.
After breakfast, you put on your shoes and jackets, and grabbed the bag of snacks. You headed out the door, locking it behind you.
The drive to the zoo was short. Jaewoo was excited to see the animals and he chattered away about them the whole way. When you arrived, he was out of the car and running towards the entrance. You had to quickly chase after him to make sure he didn't get lost.
When you reached the gate, you bought tickets and entered the zoo. Jaewoo's eyes were sparkling with happiness as he skipped through the different exhibits, stopping every few moments to stare and watch some animal move. The three of you walked along the path, admiring the different animals. Jaewoo pointed out his favorites and talked about how he wanted to be a zookeeper when he grew up.
As the day wore on, Jaewoo got more and more tired. He started to drag his feet and complain about being hungry.
"Let's go get some ice cream, okay?" Jaehyun suggested, taking his hand.
"Okay!" Jaewoo said excitedly.
You bought him an ice cream cone, and he sat down to enjoy it. He licked his lips and giggled as the melted ice cream dribbled down his chin.
"So messy," you laughed, wiping his face.
"Sorry Mommy." He smiled sheepishly.
"It's okay. You're just a kid."
After finishing the ice cream, you lead Jaewoo back towards the zoo but your son starts falling asleep. By the time you left the gates, Jaewoo was softly snoring against Jaehyun's back. He settled him carefully inside the car, strapping him into the back seat before Jaehyun started the vehicle and you headed home.
When you pulled into the driveway, you saw that it was starting to rain. You sighed and grabbed the umbrella from the back seat.
"Come on, Jaewoo." You helped him out of the car. "Let's get inside."
You rushed towards the door, holding the umbrella over Jaewoo's head. "Mommy, it's raining!"
"Should we camp out in the living room tonight?" Jaehyun asked, grinning.
"Sure." You replied and gave him a peck on the cheek. "Now let's hurry up. You're going to get drenched."
"Yay, camping!" Jaewoo grinned excitedly and rushed ahead of you to open the door.
"Whoa there," you laughed, pulling him back. "Don't run."
He slowed down and walked inside, his eyes wide and his smile even wider. "We're going to have so much fun, Mommy!"
"We are," you agreed.
You closed the door and set the umbrella aside. You took off your jacket and shoes, and placed the bag of snacks on the table.
"Let's set up the tent," Jaehyun said, Jaewoo yelling that he wanted to help.
"Sure. Just don't break anything." You mutter. Jaehyun began unfolding the tent and setting it up. Jaewoo helped him, and you watched them work together. You got a few extra blankets and pillows, and placed them in the tent.
"All set," you announced.
"Can we have cookies now?" Jaewoo asked hopefully.
"I guess," you chuckled.
You went into the kitchen and started to make the cookies. Jaehyun turned on the tv and put in a movie for Jaewoo.
When the cookies were done, you brought them out to the living room. Jaewoo grabbed a few and retreated to the tent to eat them, watching the movie. You and Jaehyun settle down next to him, snuggle up with a blanket, and start eating cookies too. You share a chocolate chip one together, smiling at each other. It's times like these when you remember why you fell in love with Jaehyun all those years ago. He's a wonderful partner and an incredible dad.
After finishing a few cookies, you and Jaehyun look at your precious son. Jaewoo is snuggling under a blanket while a Disney film plays in the background. Jaewoo fell asleep in the tent, his small snores filling the room.
"This was a good day," you sighed, resting your head on Jaehyun's shoulder.
"Yeah, it was." He smiled, placing a small kiss on your forehead. "Honey, do you want another one? Another baby?"
You thought for a moment, and looked at the sleeping child. Jaewoo was going to grow up and he wouldn't be your baby boy forever. You and Jaehyun created such a beautiful son. There was no doubt he'd continue growing and shining. His existence warmed your heart. He was a good, healthy little boy.
But there was no harm in making another.
"What are you thinking, babe?"
"Let's try for a baby," you breathed with a smile.
"Yeah?" Jaehyun pulled you tighter, pressing another kiss on your head, his hand slidding down to your stomach. "I can't wait until you're big and round with our second child."
You smiled and pulled his head down for a kiss.
"We have to make sure to keep the brat away though," Jaehyun muttered.
You laughed, knowing exactly what he meant. "I'm sure one of the guys would be happy to take him for the weekend."
"I'm sure he'll have fun with any of his uncles and their kids." Jaehyun smiled.
"Right... Kun has been bugging me that we should have Jaewoo over so he and his wife can take him and the triplets to the water park. Taeyong and Doyoung also keep talking about taking Jaewoo camping with some of the other uncles."
"Didn't Xiaojun say that Dongjun has been bugging him about a sleepover?"
You sigh and rub your eyes. Your family was a tight-knit unit of crazy misfits that were your friends. So your son had many, many uncles and a lot of cousins to play with. All of whom were always looking for ways to have your son over.
You both sat in silence, and then you heard a rustle from the tent. You turned to look and saw that Jaewoo had kicked off the blanket and was sprawled across the floor.
"Oh, poor baby." You murmured, tucking him in the blankets. His eyes fluttered open and he looked at you sleepily.
"Mommy," he mumbled.
"Go back to sleep, baby." You stroked his hair.
His eyes closed and he sighed, snuggling deeper into the blankets. You watched him for a moment, smiling. Before you knew it, the three of you fell asleep in the tent, the movie playing quietly in the background.
"You got everything, bud?" Jaehyun asked, checking his overnight bag.
"Yup!" Jaewoo said happily, bouncing on his toes.
You and Jaehyun had decided that a weekend apart would be nice, so Jaehyun was dropping off Jaewoo at Xiaojun's house for a few days. Xiaojun and his wife were more than happy to have Jaewoo over, especially since their son was the same age.
"Are you sure?" Jaehyun double-checked. "Underwear? Toothbrush? Pajamas? A book to read at night? Extra socks?"
"Yes, Daddy." Jaewoo rolled his eyes.
Jaehyun sighed and looked over at you. You chuckled and shook your head. "He's fine, babe."
Jaehyun nodded and smiled. "Alright, let's go."
The three of you walked out to the car, and you helped Jaewoo get buckled into his car seat. Jaehyun climbed into the driver's seat and you took your place beside him. You drove the short distance to Xiaojun's house and parked on the street.
"Are you excited, honey?" You asked Jaewoo.
"Yea!" He cheered.
"Alright, come on." You unbuckled him and the three of you walked up the driveway. Jaehyun knocked on the door and waited.
After a moment, Xiaojun opened the door. "Hey guys!"
"Hi Uncle Xiaojun!" Jaewoo exclaimed, running to him.
Xiaojun laughed and scooped him up. "Hello there, little man."
"Thanks for doing this," you said, smiling.
"No problem. I know how it feels to need time away from your kid." Xiaojun smiled. "We're happy to have Jaewoo. Dongjun has been excited since this morning for a sleepover."
"We're excited too." You replied, looking at your son. "Right, Jaewoo?"
"Yup! We're gonna have so much fun, Uncle Xiaojun."
Xiaojun chuckled. "I bet."
"Thanks again," Jaehyun said, patting Xiaojun on the back. "We appreciate you taking him."
"Have fun." Xiaojun winked. You laughed and hugged him.
"See you Sunday, Jaewoo." You waved.
"Bye Mommy! Bye Daddy!" He waved back.
"Take care of him," Jaehyun added.
"I will." Xiaojun chuckled, releasing the boy so that he could run and find Dongjun.
You and Jaehyun got back in the car, and Jaehyun pulled out of the driveway.
"So...we're alone for two days..." he stated.
"What are you insinuating Mr Jeong?" You teased.
"What does Mrs Jeong want to do for the next few days?" He asked.
"Hmmmm...I want to relax and spend time with my husband. Then when the sun goes down, I want him to fuck me." You purred.
"I can make that happen." He grinned and grabbed your hand. He kissed the back of it before releasing it and resting it on your thigh.
"Let's go home and have a nice dinner." Jaehyun lightly squeezed your thigh. "Can't wait to fuck you everywhere."
"Jae, you're such a horndog." You rolled your eyes.
"And you love it." He smirked.
"Just drive." You waved your hand around.
The two of you laughed, and you turned the radio on. You sang along to the music, and Jaehyun kept his hand on your leg, occasionally rubbing his thumb across your skin.
When you arrived home, you unpacked the groceries and began cooking dinner. Jaehyun wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his chin on your shoulder. "Mmm, it smells good."
"Thanks, babe." You replied.
He kissed your cheek, his hand rubbing softly against your belly. "Can't wait til your tummy is nice and round. It'll be beautiful."
"You're a bit too eager for me to be pregnant." You teased.
"Well, I love the idea of seeing you glow with my child. Knowing that you're carrying something that I put in you...fuck." Jaehyun buried his head against your neck, planting open-mouthed kisses down it. "Watching your breast swell, become full of milk...I bet our child would suckle hungrily from them."
His hand slid under your shirt, and he rubbed his fingers across your skin. You let out a soft moan, and he chuckled.
"Dinner first," you whispered.
"Yes ma'am." He replied. He nipped your shoulder and walked over to the dining table. He set two place settings and pulled out a bottle of wine.Â
You finished cooking, and the two of you sat down to eat. You talked about random things, and just enjoyed each other's company. The two of you talked about the business, the house, and the upcoming party that Ten was hosting. After dinner, you cleaned up and went to take a shower. When you got out, you dried yourself off and slipped on some comfortable clothes. You went downstairs and found Jaehyun lounging on the couch. He was shirtless and wearing only a pair of sweats.
"Comfy?" You smirked, walking over to him.
"Very." He smiled, grabbing your waist and pulling you onto his lap. "Now I'm perfect."
You laughed and leaned forward, kissing him deeply. His hands moved up and down your sides, and he moaned softly.
"You taste so good." He murmured, kissing your jaw. You hummed in response, closing your eyes. His hands slid down to your ass and he gripped it firmly.
"Mmm, babe." You moaned, running your hands through his hair. You felt him getting harder against you. You ground your hips against him and he groaned.
"Oh fuck," he gasped, pushing his hips up. "If we're doing it, we might as well do it here, right? You want to?"
You smirked and nodded, rolling your hips against him once again, earning a deep groan from him. He chuckled darkly, his hands tightening on your waist.
"You naughty girl." He kissed your shoulder.
"Only for you," you smirked, pressing light kisses on his neck.
"Yeah?" He grinned, nipping at your earlobe.
"You're making it hard to think straight."
"Good."
You groaned and pressed your lips against his. He returned the kiss, his tongue brushing against yours.
"Fuck," he breathed, gripping your ass.
"Mhm." You rocked against him, your breath hitching.
His hands moved under your shirt, and he cupped your breasts. He squeezed them gently, and his thumbs flicked over your nipples.
"God, I love your tits," he murmured.
"They're all yours," you replied, grinning.
He tugged your shirt off and tossed it aside. He leaned forward, taking one of your nipples into his mouth. You moaned and arched your back, your fingers tangling in his hair. He sucked and licked, his teeth grazing against the sensitive bud. You gasped and rocked your hips, rubbing your core against his erection.
"God, Jaehyun..." you panted, biting down on your lip.
He chuckled and moved to your other breast, giving it the same treatment. He pinched the other nipple, twisting it and you mewled, clutching him tightly.
"You like that, don't you, baby girl." His voice is rough. "So sensitive."
You whimpered in response, squirming against his bulge. "Baby...please...need you..."
Jaehyun laughed quietly. "Behave."
"Make me." You challenged him.
"Oh? You wanna be fucked?" He gripped your hips.
"Mhmm." You nodded.
"As you wish, love. Get on all fours for Daddy."
You slid down his legs and positioned yourself on the floor, resting on your forearms. Your ass was raised in the air and you felt a rush of arousal pool in your core.
"God, look at that ass of yours." His fingers tugged at the waistband of your pants, slipping his hand inside, and you gasped as his fingers brushed against your clit.
"No panties, huh?" He smirked, his thumb rubbing circles against the bundle of nerves.
"What's the point if you're just gonna fuck me anyways?" You teased.
"True," he chuckled.
He slipped his fingers inside you, and you moaned. He pumped them in and out, his thumb continuing to massage your clit.
"Fuck," you whimpered.
He spanked your butt, and you arched your back, your ass pushing closer to his hand.
"This should be easier for Daddy to fuck your sweet pussy," he growled.
You shivered in excitement, whimpering as he worked his fingers faster. He rubbed his hard-on against your backside, and you felt the thick outline of his cock through his pants.
"Feel that, baby?" He asked, squeezing your butt. "Feel how hard I am for you?"
"Yeah," you panted.
"So hot and wet." He spanked you. "All for Daddy, isn't it, baby?"
"Just for you."
He pumped his fingers quickly and you cried out, burying your face against the floor.
"You can scream all you want. We have the house to ourselves." He told you, sliding his hand down the curve of your ass, his thumb continuing to work your swollen clit. He curled his fingers, hitting that sweet spot deep within you.
"So fucking wet," he growled.
You rode his hand, your orgasm building. You were so close, and you could feel the pressure coiling in your stomach.
"Jaehyun," you gasped. "Oh...please..."
"Come for me, baby." He kissed your neck.
You cried out, your orgasm washing over you. Your thighs quivered, and you gripped the floor. Jaehyun continued to tease your g spot and his thumb rubbed against your swollen clit until you had your fill. You screamed his name as he pressed his body against your backside, kissing your shoulder, while keeping the same pace.
"Fuck," you breathed, dropping onto your stomach.
He chuckled. "That's what I like to hear."
"Shut up, Jaehyun." You threw an arm over your eyes.
He slid his hand out of you and he brought his fingers to his lips. "Hmm, you taste amazing. A nice dessert after dinner." He stuck his fingers in his mouth and sucked. He groaned as he tasted you, closing his eyes, enjoying every moment.
"Yeah?" You panted, peeking up at him.
"You were always so delicious." He released his fingers and smacked your ass. "Come here and suck me off, pretty girl."
"You're insatiable," you giggled as you moved down on the carpet.
"For you, my love, I am." He threaded his hands in your hair and he guided your head between his legs.
Your hands moved up and down his toned abdomen. He was cut in all the right areas. And you knew those muscles came with work but also because your man is the hottest hunk alive. You leaned down and licked at the trail of hair leading down past the waistband.
Jaehyun breathed out, looking up at the ceiling. He was fighting back the urge to be impatient. As much as he wants to dominate your sweet little mouth and thrust his cock in and out roughly, he won't ever hurt you.
"I love your happy trail, Jae. So sexy." Your fingers slid past the waistband and slowly, slowly pulled it down to release his throbbing cock. The thick and heavy weight springs free and you admire his veiny girth for a moment, salivating for that taste of his hot and salty precum. "Goddamn it, Jae. That is one big beautiful cock."
"You always loved this thing didn't you, my pretty girl? Admit it." Jaehyun teased, combing a hand through your hair. He plays with strands, knowing how that action sends a wave of warmth pooling your aching pussy. "Want this monster cock all for you."
"Yes, please." You purred and your fingers circled his cock at the base.
"Tell Daddy what you want." Jaehyun's eyes were dark with lust as his fingers slipped through your locks, slightly pulling. The action, plus his intense gaze, makes your eyes cloud over and your pussy gets impossibly wetter than it already was. "Use your words, baby girl."
"I want my husband's delicious, thick cock." You kissed his balls. "Please Daddy."
Jaehyun chuckled. "There's my wife." His eyes roll back and he hisses when your mouth slides over his cock. You bob your head, taking as much as you can before he reaches the back of your throat. "Mmm, that's it. Take it all."
Jaehyun's hand was on your cheek, tilting your head slightly for a better look at his cock stretching your sweet lips. "Fuck, so pretty."
Your mouth popped off his dick and you circled your tongue around his tip, smirking as you saw his abs twitch in response. You lick the veins and back up to his tip, before deepthroating him once again, slurping and sucking loudly and shamelessly.
"Fuck, that's right. Choke on my big cock, sweetheart. Suck that dick so well for Daddy." Your lips moved quickly and sloppy, your saliva dripping past his length. Your one hand massages his balls, while the other twisted and jacked off his saliva-soaked dick, bringing your mouth in rhythm with your fist.
Jaehyun groaned, feeling his high approaching fast. You looked up at him, maintaining eye contact. You both know that Jaehyun loves when you gaze at him when giving head, as his arousal goes up to the next level.
"That's it, baby, take me. Fuck, look at those eyes. Such a gorgeous girl." Jaehyun breathed, feeling you swallow him to the hilt. Your throat constricts around him, and you feel his release pouring down your throat. "Swallow daddy's cum, baby. Shit, yeah, such a good wife."
You took his length, releasing a few moments later with a wet sound. He was still half-hard, and you sucked once again, and licked from the base to the tip, watching it stiffen to its full girth again.
"Jaehyun," You whined, licking the clear fluid that leaked off his tip.
He looked at you, his expression a bit dazed from his orgasm, and you climbed over his lap, lining his cock at your entrance and slowly sinking. You mewled, closing your eyes, savoring the burn that came from his big cock sliding into your wet pussy.
Jaehyun moaned when his full length was completely inside you. "Ah, yes, fuck. You feel so good, sweetheart."
"Move for me. Please."
"Ride Daddy's cock. Use it and cum for me."
And ride you, I will. You planted your hands on his chest and started rocking on his hips, the sloppy sound filling the room as you continued fucking him. His hands rested on your hips and guided the movement, grunting and cursing under his breath as your cunt clenched him so well.
"Fuck, that's it. Oh my god, you feel amazing. Such a fucking good pussy. Best I've ever had." Jae grits his teeth. "Don't forget who owns this. This is Daddy's pussy. My. Fucking. Pussy."
"Yes," you gasped, picking up your pace. You moaned as you ground down on his hard cock, the drag along your walls feeling incredible. You clenched him and felt your body heating up with your release approaching.
"Say it," Jaehyun barked, squeezing your waist. His thumbs dug into your hips as he pumped in and out. "Tell me who it belongs to."
"It's yours, Jaehyun."
He let out a guttural groan. His hands gripped your waist and he bucked his hips up, ramming into you roughly. The lewd sounds grew louder, the scent of sex filling the air, and sweat glistening over his flawless body.
"Shit," you groaned, bouncing yourself harder, taking him to the hilt. "Oh, oh yes. So good. You feel so good, baby. Don't stop."
"Take my fucking cock, Y/N. Such a good girl. Look at how deep I am inside you, how big my cock looks stretching that tight pussy." He licked his lips, his eyes raking hungrily over you.
He drove himself upwards again, increasing his speed. You felt the knot in your belly beginning to unravel and a thin sheen of sweat glinted off your skin. You clutched Jaehyun's hand and threaded his fingers with yours, feeling your orgasm fast approaching.
He must be nearing his end as well, his hips losing their rhythm, becoming sloppy with desire, but he wanted you to break first. His other hand left its place on your hips and traced circles around your swollen nub, causing you to cry out in pleasure. "Can't wait to see you knocked up, baby girl, full of my baby, so round and beautiful."
"Oh fuck, I'm...oh fuck. Jaehyun!" Your climax hits you and your juices gush all over his dick and your thighs. Jaehyun curses as your walls milk his cock, milking him of everything and spilling it all inside your womb, pumping the last bits and still grinding until he has drained the last drop.
You rested your head on his chest, and he wrapped his arms around you, kissing the top of your head.
You eventually lean back, and look at your husband. He looks wrecked.
You probably do too.
"Hi," you breathe, giving him a weak smile.
"Hi, pretty girl." He replies. "You okay?"
"Mhhmm. I don't think I could be any better, to be honest." You laughed softly, your body sated and warm.
"Me too." He grinned. "Damn, babe, it's been a while."
"Definitely," you nodded in agreement.
"Want to get cleaned up?" He offered.
"In a minute. I just want to stay here a little longer. Please?" You said quietly.
He chuckled. "Okay, we'll stay like this."
You laid your head on his shoulder, wrapping your arms around his torso. He pulled a blanket from the back of the sofa and draped it across your naked bodies.
"We haven't had alone time in forever, huh?" He stated, combing his fingers through your hair.
"Mmm, that's true." You hummed in acknowledgement, nuzzling into the crook of his neck.
"When was the last time you and I got to spend time without our son?" He asked, tapping his fingers against your arm.
"I honestly couldn't tell ya." You laughed, lacing your fingers with his.
"Yeah...me neither." He replied.
You smiled, peering up at him through your lashes. He looked beautiful, his chest rising and falling with each breath. You brushed some stray hairs away from his forehead.
He was perfect.
And he was all yours.
"I know what I want to do for the next seventy odd years. Spend it with you." He smiled, taking your hand in his, interlacing your fingers.
"Me too." You whispered, cupping his face.
"Our 60th anniversary...fucking old but I'll fuck you then, just so you know." He told you with a playful grin.
You slapped his chest with your free hand, letting out a scoff of amusement. "Not in your 80's Jae."
"Hmmm," he narrowed his eyes, pressing a kiss to the corner of your mouth.
"Can I at least make love to you in our 70's?" He asked, raising a brow.
"If you're that determined...yes you can, babe." You pecked him.
"Then I'm gonna fuck the living daylights out of you tomorrow morning, old or not, and it's a promise." He winked.
"Don't make promises you can't keep, Jae." You teased.
"Watch me, baby."
It had been about two months since you and Jaehyun finally had alone time and now Jaewoo was running around the house like a whirlwind. He was getting quite active at his age, and the two of you couldn't help but wonder where he got all that energy from.
While his dad worked from home, Jaewoo would often come to visit him and bring him juice boxes or other random things from the playroom. Jaehyun would always humor his son by accepting whatever gift he had for him. Sometimes, they'd be random papers filled with doodles or playthings. Jaehyun cherished it all.
Even if it was junk, Jaehyun would simply put it away for a rainy day, and your house was covered with them.
Jaewoo was his little prince, after all.
"Daddy, look." Jaewoo skipped towards the mahogany desk in Jaehyun's study and put a stuffed dinosaur onto it. It was an orange and white T-Rex and one of Jaewoo's favorites.
Jaehyun reached out to stroke Jaewoo's soft dark hair. He had your natural waves.
"Ahh, my favorite dinosaur." Jaehyun smiled wide as he pulled his son into his arms.
Jaewoo giggled loudly, squeezing his father's shoulder. Jaehyun gave his son a gentle squeeze.
"You need to eat lunch," Jaehyun suggested. "Want to order pizza?"
Jaewoo nodded enthusiastically. You always told Jaehyun that pizza was fine occasionally, as long as he watched the amount of sauce and cheese. You had prepared a healthy lunch for Jaewoo, but sometimes Jaehyun could never resist spoiling his little boy.
And by occasionally, you meant more than 4 times a week...but you didn't stop Jaehyun because he did help with other chores when the weekends came around.
"Where's Mommy, Jaewoo?" Jaehyun asked, turning off his laptop. "Go get her so I can place the order."
"Okay!" The little boy ran away, leaving his father smiling and shaking his head.
Jaewoo went around your house looking for you, searching the living room, the kitchen, only to find you huddled over the toilet in the downstairs bathroom. His eyes wide, he screamed for Jaehyun as he ran to the study. "Daaaddddyyyyyyyy, Mommy is sick!!!"
Jaewoo looked towards the open door in surprise before rushing forward. "Jaewoo?" He questioned frantically.
"Daddy, Daddy!" The boy screamed as he pushed his tiny legs to run towards his father. He wrapped his arms around Jaehyun's calves and looked up at him imploringly.
"What? What, why are you shouting? Where's Mommy? Why are you crying, Jaewoo?" Jaehyun smoothed Jaewoo's hair, worried.
"She's sick!" Jaewoo explained as tears started rolling down his cheeks. Jaehyun felt a rush of panic through his body. His mind running with all sorts of questions.
"Where is she, Jaewoo?" He knelt down and wiped Jaewoo's tear-stained cheeks with his thumb.
"In the bathroom." He pointed to the door that was still left ajar. Jaehyun pulled away from the tight embrace he held Jaewoo in and rushed in the direction his son pointed to.
"Y/N..." He found you in the bathroom, still leaning over the toilet bowl. Your pale complexion frightened Jaehyun. For someone with skin that glows so perfectly, a shade of a tinge of whiteness wasn't a good sight to see. "Y/N!"
"W-Why are you panicking so much?" You raised an eyebrow, leaning against the bathtub while you wiped your mouth clean with toilet paper.
"Y/N, we need to go see the doctor," Jaehyun announced anxiously as he grabbed you by the wrist and tried to drag you out. "You could have a serious illness or something. Who knows?! Jaewoo heard you being sick..."
"Calm down." Your voice remained calm, and it immediately made Jaehyun stop and stare. A smile etched on your face before your hand took over his and gently laid it flat on your belly. "We don't need to visit a doctor, sweetie."
Jaehyun blinked twice, unable to process what was happening. You laughed, thinking how it was cute to see him be confused.
"Jae...sweetie, you do the math. Our son heard me throwing up in the bathroom and panicked over nothing. It isn't because I'm sick...no." Your other hand came up to cup Jaehyun's jaw before continuing, "I'm just having a baby."
Jaehyun gasped when everything fell into place, the pieces that were once broken together had made a bigger and clearer picture for him to understand the situation better. "Holy fuck...you mean, that you-"
"Yeah." You bit your lower lip and grinned as you saw your husband's mouth gaping. "Surprise?"
"Baby, oh my gosh." He immediately hugged you close, his arms wrapping around you while pulling you flush against his chest. He could not describe the happiness he felt when he found out about your pregnancy.
"I was going to tell you but I guess your son ruined it with his screaming." You teased, your arms circled Jaehyun, and returned the hug.
"In his defense, he probably thought his mommy was sick. Isn't that right, buddy?"
You and Jaehyun withdrew the hug when you heard small footsteps approach the bathroom. With curious eyes, Jaewoo stood a little bit away from the two of you and looked up with tears in his eyes. Jaehyun broke into laughter, grinning before reaching out for the toddler and scooped him in his arms.
"Is Mommy sick? She's very sick isn't she?!" Jaewoo cried as he hugged the sides of Jaehyun's face. "I'm scared, daddy."
"Mommy is not sick, Jaewoo." Jaehyun comforted his son. "Mommy is just..."
"Jaewoo, do you want to be a big brother?" You asked, leading your little family into the living room.
Jaewoo is still teary as he rubbed his face on the side of his father's neck and listened attentively to his mother's question. "Mmhmm." He mumbled, nodding. Jaehyun places Jaewoo in the middle of the couch and your son automatically wraps his small arms around you when you sat down. Jaehyun settles on the other end and keeps one of his hands wrapped around yours, his thumb grazing your ring finger gently.
"Mommy is having another baby." You gently tell Jaewoo. You pointed at your belly. "The baby is growing inside of mommy's tummy."
"But why were you sick, mommy?" Jaewoo inquired innocently.
"Mommy ate something and the baby didn't like it. Mommy didn't know that the baby didn't like the food." You explained in a gentle tone.
"So, you threw it out?" Jaewoo tilted his head, asking. "You shouldn't have eaten it then, mommy."
"Next time I'll ask the baby what they want to eat." You nodded in response.
"And the baby is fine now?"
"Yup, the baby is perfectly fine now." You replied with a smile.
"Pinky swear?" Jaewoo smiled cheekily as he put his tiny finger on yours.
"Yup, we'll all be fine." You brushed some strands of your son's hair away and rested a hand on your stomach.
"Mommy, can I help watch the baby?" Jaewoo asks. You glance up at Jaehyun, meeting your husband's soft and loving gaze.
"Do you promise to help look after your baby brother or sister?" Jaehyun continues. Jaewoo nods fervently, excited at the idea of having someone smaller to protect and dote on.
"Mommy and daddy would really appreciate the help, baby," you tell him, smoothing down his hair once more. "Are you excited?"
"Yes, mommy. I am!" Jaewoo claps, wiggling his small body as he bounces on the couch. You could tell how enthusiastic he is to be the 'big' brother of the new baby, his tiny smile, the way he spoke.
Jaehyun leaned over his son's head, making a funny face that caused his son to fall back laughing. Then, he planted a kiss on his head, looking up at you with the fondest expression ever. His palm cupped your cheek, giving you a soft smooch.
"Thank you, Y/N."
"For what, Mr Jeong?"
"For marrying me, giving birth to our son, and being my forever companion. Thank you for always standing by my side."
âI love you Jaehyun.â You clutch his hand.
âI love you too.â Jaehyun gently taps the tip of your nose, kissing the side of your forehead while placing an arm behind you and Jaewoo. Your family's laughter resounded across the quiet residence, warm and wholesome.

â. you've been on the run for a while. you knew someone would come eventuallyâbut not him.
tags. fem!reader, old west era, bounty hunter simon, size difference, size kink, implied the reader's husband is a terrible human, accidental voyeurism, period-typical sexism, masturbation [18+ only]
masterlist
Youâve been running for months, first from your husband (the phantom grip of his hand still sending an ache through your wrist) and now as a wanted conwoman for stealing the clothes from an unsuspecting cowpoke who thought he was getting lucky. You can only imagine what Mama would say about trading your ruffled skirts for grass-stained trousers and boiled-leather suspenders.
(Itâs unbecoming of a respectable woman, dear. Uncouth.)
Sheâd probably have a lot to say if she knew everything youâve done to survive.
You hop from one place to the next only by the mere chance someone was willing to let a helpless woman accompany them on their travels. Nearly a month has passed since being stranded in a dusty old mining town after a man and his wife dump you off and leave you behind. Washoeâs a little gritty and not welcoming unless thereâs money to spend.
Itâs not exactly safe, not unsafe, either, but nobody asks questions as long as you keep your head down and play the part of a mourning widow just passing through.
You know youâve overextended your stay when you canât leave your room during the day without worrying about a noose and the open end of a barrel meeting you outside.Â
(That your husband or that gun-waving cowpoke finally found you.)
Sleep practically clings to you like a second skin, but you donât dare close your eyesâyou canât.
This is how you end up sitting in the corner of the saloon, using the last of whatever you have in your change purse to order something strong, something your husband kept locked away, and anything else he thought women shouldnât have a part in.Â
You donât even realize that your eyelids begin to feel heavy, steadily blurring out the flickering lantern on the wall while you wait for your drink.Â
You catch yourself once or twice before your head can hit the table, rapidly blinking away the exhaustion before your eyes slide to the swinging doors.
You should stay awake.Â
You need to stay awake just a little bit longerâ
Your luck runs out that day.Â
Itâs one thing to know itâd happen eventually, and something else to realize that you make it easy for himâthe man with an infamous name and a faded black bandana covering half his faceâhow he walked into the saloon and scooped you up (all unladylike sleepy dead weight) out of the weathered booth without a fight.
When youâd woken up to find yourself trussed up and thrown over the back of his horse, you cursed him out with every word you could think of that would make Mama clutch her skirts. Your captor ignored you, only talking to you whenever he warned you he was about to set up camp.Â
âDid my husband send you?â Acknowledging him after all this time tasted like pennies on your tongue.
The man, Simon Riley, had leaned back against his bedroll and tipped the brim of his hat over his eyes. âGo the fuck to sleep.â
That was several weeks ago.Â
Now, you find yourself stranded in another state thatâs more green and vibrant than anything youâre familiar with, stuck with a man who refuses to answer the questions you throw at him. He doesnât talk outside a few cursory words you greedily latch onto. Anythingâs better than silence and the sound of hooves hitting earth.Â
The pace he keeps you at is exhausting. You complain about it enough until he moves you in front of him, tying your hands to the saddle's horn.
âI would strongly advise you to shut that mouth for the rest of the ride unless you want me to do something about that, too.â The low growl of his voice in your ear makes the fine hairs on the back of your neck stand up, muddling your brain.
Youâre distantly aware you had something to say to that, but you donât.Â
And that is really saying something.
Itâs because thereâs someone he needs to meet in townâan errand that lawbreakers who run their mouths arenât allowed to go on.
This is how you end up sitting in camp alone, twirling around a knife he gave you solely for emergencies.Â
(Surprise, sharp and quick through your middle, when he tosses his pocket knife into the grass beside you. âWhatâs to stop me from leaving?â
You couldâve sworn he rolled his eyes. âWill you?â
It doesnât seem worth dignifying with a reply. You donât want to travel alone, and thereâs a high possibility of getting lost, finding yourself saddled up with worse company than the one youâre stuck with.
Until he evidently catches you again.)
Heâs a lot nicer than you first gave him credit forâif only by a fractionânot that you know much about Simon other than what you overheard from gossip circles before you became Mrs. Thornton. Afternoons spent sipping tea laden with honey and lounging around a table full of cakes in the sun parlor while wealthy women talked behind their lace-covered hands to hide secret smiles you were too naive to understand.Â
Trying not to stare at the bulge of his arms with thin pink scarsâunlike the men youâre used to who got through life with a silver spoon hanging from their mouthâas he places his saddle back on his horse, you think you finally know what they smiled about.
You learn those scars also litter his torso from the time you accidentally walked upon him mid-way through putting his trousers on after washing in the river. Itâd been too dark for you to see much else, and you quickly returned to camp before he could say something that would embarrass you both.Â
Then, of course, tucked away into your bedroll, you canât help wondering what the rest of him would have looked like if you had stayed a second longer.Â
If his jaw is sharp or soft behind that mask he insists on wearingâthatâs if heâd let you see at all.Â
Simonâs always so serious that itâs often hard to determine whether heâs merely tolerating your existence until he can get rid of you or if heâs unused to traveling accompanied for so long. Itâs not as if he goes out of his way to make pleasant conversation with you for you to assume otherwise.
You look off in the direction where he disappeared into the dense line of trees hours ago, wondering if you should go out looking for him (mainly because youâre hot and sticky from the humidity) despite his order to stay put.Â
But after four hours turns into five, you head off, searching for something to help cool you off.
Luckily, unlike the heavily eroded lands youâre used to, there isnât any water shortage in a place that sees rain three times a day, so it doesnât take long to find a lake. You set your knife down on the stone-covered beach, followed by your boots, until youâre left in nothing but your undergarments.Â
The water is icy cold and laps gently at your feet when you step in. You canât find it in you to complain as the heat from the day slowly washes away the further you walk in and find a wide ledge to sit on.Â
Your thoughts drift back to Simon, incessant and intruding even though you shouldnât be thinking about him while wet and naked. And suddenly, you can picture it: his hands replacing yours as they trace along your neck. You have a feeling theyâre probably rough and scarred from years of living hard and gunslinging, extracting the readily available knowledge that theyâre big enough to encase your waist.
He could maneuver you around however he wants (you know this), and you feel dizzy just thinking about it.
Sighing, you sink deeper into the water while your hands smooth over the tips of your breasts and down your stomach.Â
You wish you could see him without violating whatever personal preservations hide him from the rest of the world. Instead, youâre left with your imaginationâthe benefits of being a married woman and the little experience you have in the bedroom finally coming into play.Â
Closing your eyes, you picture what he might look like under those sun-weathered leathers, knowing that the broadness of his shoulders isnât only due to his vest and holsters but also from how his job has shaped him.
Your hands travel lower, fingers brushing through the creamy, soft wetness between your legs, evidence of what Simon does to you even when heâs not around. A moan, too high and breathy, slips past your lips as you use your middle finger to circle your clit in slow, clumsy swirls from lack of practice and patience that spreads warmth through your middle despite the cold water.Â
Itâs good, your fingers discovering places your husband always ignoredâtoo many nights spent with your hand under your nightgown long after heâd tucked his cock away and gone to sleepâbut probably donât compare to the ones youâve caught yourself staring at far too many times.Â
They donât fill you nearly enough, unlike how you know Simonâs wouldâthick and unrelenting. Rough and long, reaching deep enough to make you breathless.
Your breath hitches from pinching the tight, sensitive peak of your nipple until you feel a slight sting, and then it slips out, a tiny thing thatâs only audible to your earsâSimonâa secret you now share with the lightning bugs and crickets.
âDirty, no good rottenââ heâd tell you for thinking such lewd thoughts about him, for sinning so easily. Maybe you are, for getting so worked up over a man who isnât your husband (no matter how terrible a husband he may be).
A man whoâs so big that he makes you feel small, the type that gives before he takes. Itâs enough to make you work your hand fasterâyour body vibrating from the chill of the water and the ache between your trembling thighs. Â
Fantasies arenât enough to sate the deep longing in your chest. Yet youâre slipping over the edge of ecstasy before taking your next breathâall of it builds up and gradually crests inside you like the lake rippling against the shore.
Afterward, it leaves you feeling soft and blurred around the edges, a watercolor painting drying under the sun while you wait for your rapid heartbeat to slow.
You donât realize your eyes have fallen shut until they flutter open, and youâre startled to find Simon standing at the shoreline, his chest heaving as if he ran here.Â
(Though he probably did to see if you took the opportunity to leave.)
Youâre glued to your spot on the rock, suddenly struck with the mortifying realization that heâd seen you comeâthat he possibly heard you cry out his name so intimately.
You watch him remove his hat and hang it on a branch with wide eyes. Followed by his undershirt, guns, andâ
He keeps removing clothes until heâs completely naked on the shoreâaside from his face that stays hiddenâscars marred his chest, spreading to his collarbones and below the water as he steps into the lake and sits on another ledge across from you.
His mask makes him look more menacing, erasing any trace of softness there. And you wonder if heâs angry at you for wandering off.
"Come here." His voice is low and deep, rumbling in his chest.
You don't think he'd hurt you. If he wanted to, he would have done it by now.
At least, thatâs what youâre going with to settle the nervous fluttering in your middle.
Water laps at your arms as you wade through the water, each shaky step bringing you closer until you stop before him.
"In my lap."
Your breath sticks in your throat as you do as he says, settling down onto his sturdy thighs, palms falling flat against his broad chest. That same breath comes out in one large exhale as his fingers slide along your jaw, to the nape of your neck, curling into your hair, wet and falling around your shoulders.
âLike this?â you ask, trying to ignore how breathy you sound.
He grunts, apparently in confirmation.
You donât think youâve ever felt so conflicted in your lifeâfear and arousal turning into a messy cocktail in your veins.
âWhy do I always have to use a heavy hand to make you listen?â
Your lips part. Breath growing short. âIâm sorry.â
And thenâ
Simon pulls your head back sharply, exposing your throat.
Your body goes slack against his. Mind blissfully blank.
âNo,â he says, tone flat. âBut you will be.â

âpaigeyâ you called out begging for her attention as the slowly exits the door you go up to her jumping in to her warm presence.
âyou want to teach me baby?â she shutters her eyebrows together confused at your short sentence since you never had a desire for the sport.
âwhy now, i have been begging for months princess?â you hide your face in her shoulder as she sets you down trying not to expose your twisted plan.
âyou were just really cute cute with those kids today maâ you retort teasing her as your playing with your finger tips avoiding contact already feeling the heat radiating off of her.

âcome hereâ she remarks making you follow the sound of her voice leading you to the free throw line as she places the orange ball in your grasp placing your hands in the right spot.
âokay keep the ball above your head and shootâ her voice echoing through the gymnasium making your nervous while she watches the ball intensely as your shot misses hitting off the top of the backboard.
âmama your close but this time let it guide out of your hands donât throw itâ she presses your back against her stomach as your hands lay on your curved hips as her warm breath runs down your neck forming goosebumps on your melanin skin.
her words running through your head trying to perfect your shot as the ball finds its way above your head again you shoot it as you watch the ball slowly fall from the air hearing the swift noise of the net as you watch it fall out of the hoop fitting perfectly through making you turn around in excitement to hug the blonde.
âgood jobâ your soft hands run up paiges stomach hiding under her shirt playing with the band of her bra sending shivers down the blondeâs spine.
âif you wanted me to fuck you so bad, all you needed to do was askâ she grits through her teeth tightening her grip on your waist feeling the loss of circulation come back as she removes her hands only to bring them to your shirt removing it for you along with your tiny jean shorts.
âsuch a fucking slutâ she groans lifting you into her arms getting onto her knees placing you on the cold gym floor as your left in your laced thong and bra as she licks a long stripe with her tongue starting from your lower stomach heading up to your collarbone when she swiftly pulls away.
âkeep your pussy warm for me, ill be right backâ she spats heading out the gym doors going to retrieve the silicone strap from the car heading back on to her feet leaving you by yourself praying nobody walked in on you.
your fingers play with the band of your panties slipping under to form circles on your clit not giving you the same sensation paige does with her skilled hands.
your fingers diving into your dripping core as soft crys fall from your mouth at the little amount of pleasure when you finally hear the gym doors open back up to see paige strutting towards your naked body.
paige releasing the strap when she pulls down her sweats pulling your thong to the side sending shivers down your spine when your slick hits the cold air.
she wastes no time to thrust into your deep core as her hands moves the hair at of your face before grabbing a fist full of your hair forcing you to look at paiges assault on you core.
âlook at how i fill you up perfectly baby, always taking what i give youâ she coos as the image of her taking you on her court clouds her mind turning her on by the second.
âmake me feel so good mommyâ you cry out as she lets go of your hair as you fall back on to the court as your breast move with each thrust.
paige takes the initiative as her hand cups your breast as she takes the other is her mouth swirling her tongue over your hardened nipple.
âwant your baby so badâ you blurt out fucking yourself back onto the strap as your hands roam all over paiges abs running down from her chest to her lower stomach.
âyou want mommyâs baby huh? is that what this was about?â she lets her cocky smile shine through as she grabs your wrist putting them both in one hand as she pins them above your head.
âyes please, want it so badâ her hips pressing against yours as she brings her other hand to circle your clit making your legs tighten around her waist.
âyou will look so fucking sexy pregnant with my baby prettyâ her moans coming in to sync with yours as the strap hits her clit at the perfect angle making her speed up her movements
âyesâ you sob unable to say anything else as your eyes roll in to the back of your head at the gut wrenching pleasure while your hands squirm in her firm hold as she squeezes them tight causing your movements to fault.
âyour going to have to beg ma, tell me how bad you need to cumâ she teases as her thumb playfully slips into your core only to be pulled right back out bringing her thumb to your mouth for you to suck dry.
âneed to cum- so fucking badâ you sob feeling the knot ready to break any second knowing she has full control of your body and you will do anything she says.
âgo on baby cum with me. wanna see your face prettyâ you say maintaining eye contact with her as both your liquids spill out on each other feeling your combined release run down your thighs.
you lay there all fucked out as she takes a picture of you quickly to remember the intimate moment before she helps you get up helping you gather all your clothes.
âdonât worry princess, ill give you my baby real soon promise.â she says pulling your waist into hers pressing a kiss behind your ear.

take me home, country road
[ao3]
You have nothing on your person apart from a hastily packed suitcase and the dress you came into town wearing, on the run from trouble back home. Too bad John's missing a bride that matches your description. Or: the 1800s (mistaken) mail order bride au (part 8)
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7
-
Now a nocturnal animal emerges into the daylight hours.
A week becomes two and your shoulders untense. Itâs not something you notice at first because youâre used to an ever present strain between your shoulder blades and an ache in your jaw from grinding your teeth at night. Then a fortnight goes by without so much as a missive with your name on it floating across Johnâs desk or a stranger appearing in town after tracking you down, and you wonder if maybe the world really is big enough to hide in.Â
It sure feels that way at times. The woods beyond the bounds of Johnâs property stretch out farther than the eye can see and even walking it feels like you could disappear into another realm. Old spruces shoot up high into the clouds, and deeper into the woods, huge rock formations grow more and more prominent as you near the mountains. John takes you through the woods on horseback, following the rough trails carved into the dirt by a century of wagons and carts using the same path. The footprints of a different time.Â
Up in the trees, birds warble and chirp, talking to one another in songs that youâve never heard before. A woodpecker drills into the side of a tree. Pinecones snap out of the upper branches and drop to the forest floor.Â
There is only a single trail and itâs easy to lose. You grow a bit nervous when John takes you off the trail and deeper into the woods, but he does so with the confidence of a man that knows these woods like the back of his hand. You go quiet when he stops Buttercup to let a herd of deer wander by, the stragglers hurrying to catch up with the group, throwing the two of you nervous glances before they disappear into the thicket.Â
âShould we be out this far?â you ask in a whisper, reluctant to disturb the silence. Though the woods are full of animals that bleat, chirp, chatter, and hoot, the sound of your own voice feels preternaturally loud and shrill.Â
âWe wonât get lost, darlinâ. I know my way around,â John reassures you, curling an arm around your waist to hold you to him. These days, you hardly worry about tumbling off the horse. Not with him at your back anyway.Â
âThat wasnât really my worry,â you mumble, trailing off.
âThen whatâre you getting all worked up about?â
âArenât there wolves out here? Or bears?â
He snorts, the sound making you jolt. You donât topple over because he has such a firm hold around your waist. âThey donât usually come this close to town. Theyâre more scared of you than you are of them.â
âThat sounds like something mothers tell their children to stop them crying,â you say flatly. You draw your legs up automatically when John directs Buttercup through a shallow basin, a shortcut back home. It makes you anxious for a moment, but the water barely goes up to her ankles, so you relax when you realize that youâre in no danger of being swept away by the current.
âThat doesnât mean a bear or wolf canât wander by, but itâs rare.â
âAnd there it is.â
You can feel the heat of his glower on the back of your head. âWe could spend the night out here if you want to see for yourself.â
At that, you shut your mouth. Even if he were to prove his point, you have no interest in camping out in the woods now that youâve become accustomed to the luxury of a soft bed. Granted that youâre forced to share that same bed, still youâve never slept half as well as you do these days. You wake up rested after nine hours of blissful shut eye, a sleep so deep that your dreams only come in half-remembered flashes. Often they involve the man you wake up wrapped around, and for that youâre grateful that they remain submerged.Â
A new desire has started to burrow its way into the back of your mind in recent days. It starts out as a thought so brief that you hardly notice it before it skitters away.Â
And then it lingers.Â
You wake up in the middle of the night hot, sweat dripping down the nape of your neck and a fire burning in your loins, a red-hot coil wound around itself, fit to burst. Pulsating. At some point throughout the night, you must have thrown a leg around Johnâs waist because it rests there now, your hand planted in the middle of his chest and your sex all but rubbing up against his thigh. Under your hand, you can feel his heart pump strong and steady.
You hold very, very still, waiting for him to wake. But John sleeps on, his palm loose where it rests along the curve of your hip, fingers curling into the flesh of your backside.Â
You can hardly look at him these days without shaking. Youâve come to fixate on the sway of his hips when he walks and the flecks of silver in his beard. The grooves in his weathered hands. The way your head fits in the palm of his hand when he cradles it to his chest. The fond glimmer in his eyes that shines the brightest when he puts his hat on your head and it slips past your eyes, too big for your head.Â
When you tip it up in order to see, the folds around his eyes become more pronounced with the force of his smile.
âThere you are, bug,â he says, taking the hat off your head to set it back on his and reeling you in for a kiss.Â
Bug, love, honey, darling. The constant flux of endearments makes your head spin. John never calls you by the name on your marriage license. Itâs like that name means nothing to him, cast away at the first opportunity and replaced by an endless stream of pet names. Â
He hasnât touched your sex since making you come on the porch swing the week before. He pulls you into a chaste embrace at night, the only evidence of his own desire being the stiff shaft nestled against the small of your back in the early morning hours, which he takes care of on his own in the bathroom downstairs after pressing a kiss to your cheek. You feel robbed of something, though you donât know quite what.Â
Youâre tempted to offer your help, but you donât know exactly what that would entail. Inexperience and fear of rejection hold you back, stay your tongue. In the two weeks youâve been married, he hasnât once tried to pin you down and rut between your thighs like you expected and dreaded that very first night.Â
Now that that time has passed, you donât know how to initiate that moment again.Â
John promises to teach you how to ride a horse. You canât see a reason to protest, much to your chagrin. Despite your apprehensions, even you canât deny that it would be a helpful skill. A train only goes one way after all, confined to a single track. A horse has no such laws to obey.
The thought stays nestled at the back of your mind as the days continue on.
You flounder around in the kitchen on the day that John invites his deputies over for supper. Youâve met the big oneâSimonânow a small handful of times, each encounter marked by a silence that sucks the air out of the room when he turns his gaze on you and holds it. Perhaps youâve simply ascribed too much importance to his person, given that every time youâve seen him, your life has changed irrevocably. His presence is always followed by revelation it seems. The archangel of vicissitude. A harbinger of uncertain times.
The other two are new. John introduces you to them when you bring out the cutlery and crockery to set the table, and you nearly go cross-eyed when they reach across the table at the same time to offer their hands. You go to meet them halfway, but flinch when John brings his hand down on the table with enough force to make the silverware jump.
âSorry, darlinâ,â he apologizes to you first before turning his glare on the other two. âThat ainât proper, boys. You wait for the lady to offer her hand firstâyou donât treat a woman like sheâs a mutt youâre teaching to shake.â
âAh, sorry, hen,â the one on the left says, his voice a thick Scottish brogue like a purr. Heâs possibly the handsomest man youâve ever met, but thereâs something dangerous and wild in his eyes. When he smiles, it curls up in a roguish sort of way that makes you falter, like heâs in on a joke that you arenât. âDinnae mean to offend. Noâ often we get ta meet such a pretty lady.âÂ
âSorryââ the one on the right apologizes in a voice far more earnest than his counterpartâs. âAnd sorry for him. We think he was raised by wolves.â
âWhatâs yer excuse then?â the Scot sneers, knocking his knee into the other manâs under the table. âDinnae see ye waitinâ for her fuckinâ hand like a gentlemanâapologies, hen.â
âChrist,â John sighs, leaning back in his chair and staring up at the ceiling.Â
Simon stays silent at the other end of the table, but the whole table jumps when he aims a kick at the Scottâs leg. He hisses and blurts out a word in a language youâve never heard before, the word unmistakably vitriolic. He clutches at his shin and shoots a nasty look at Simon, though he doesnât make a move to retaliate.Â
âNameâs Kyle. Kyle Garrick,â the other introduces himself, and you finally reach across the table to offer your hand. His hand is warm against yours when he takes it, dark skin burnished in the candlelight. Thereâs something inviting about him; something about his eyes, so dark that you almost fall into them. Thick lips curl up into a smile. âAnd this here is Soap.â
You frown. âSoap?â
The man in question runs a hand down his front, emphasizing the cut of his shirt and the way it clings to the muscle of his chest. ââCause of how well I clean up.â
Simon barks out a laugh at that. The sound comes so sudden and sharp that it startles you. âYou got it âcause your mum had to wash out your mouth with soap.â
Itâs the most youâve ever heard out of him and you can only stare wide-eyed at the lot of them as they dissolve into bickering and squabbling after that. Itâs almost a relief to head back into the kitchen to finish cooking.Â
Dinner is a similar messy affair, punctuated by the sound of Soap practically gnawing the meat off the bone. He only apologizes when John barks at him for making a mess, more food on the floor around him than on his plate, but his table manners donât last very long. John doesnât seem so much embarrassed on their behalf as annoyed, but itâs an annoyance that comes with an aftertaste of warmth. You can tell without asking that theyâve known each other for years.Â
Thereâs room enough in you for food and envy. Back home you had friends. Never close friends, but acquaintances at least. Maids you could recognize by face. Small talk while ascending single-file up the servantsâ staircase. Perhaps little more than that. Youâd never been particularly close to any of them, but how could you? You worked from morning âtill night, up and down the stairs, moving in the shadows. Never making too much noise lest your employers take notice of you.Â
Like he did.
You shake it off. Thatâs no matter now. Youâre hundreds of miles away and living under a new name. A married woman, to the county sheriff no less. It only sometimes hurts your heart to think of how lonely youâd been.Â
When they leave, you stand at the window and watch as they disappear into the black of the night, Simon at the front of the pack, his torchlight leading the way. The sound of horse hooves beating against the dirt recedes the farther they get.Â
His hands warm your shoulders. You donât know how long heâs been there, standing behind you while you stared out the window after the boys. All you know is that his hands are warm, and the kiss he presses to the back of your head makes you arch back into him, unconsciously gravitating closer to him. Needing to be near.Â
In bed, you curl your fingers against his chest. On a rough exhale, you wake. You dream still of something terrible that happens somewhere else, in another city, in an old life. His heartbeat lulls you back to sleep.
John takes you to the local seamstress to have you fitted for a pair of pants and suddenly youâre out of excuses. They fit you comfortably, like a second skin, and you find yourself pulling at the legs at your final fitting as if to stretch out the material. The seamstress nearly jabs you with a pin and glares up at you until you stop fidgeting.Â
You come to terms with it when he brings you into the stables and makes you fetch the saddle from where it rests on its stand. Itâs heavier than you expected. You stumble back over to where John now has Buttercup standing in the middle of the stable, holding her by the lead fixed to her bridle.Â
âI donât know ifââ you start, trepidation climbing up your chest until it grips you by the throat. For as many times as youâve ridden her, youâve never done it alone.Â
John fixes her lead to a post and walks over to you, taking the saddle from your hands and letting it drop to the ground. He cups your face in both hands to tilt your head up. âHey, honey. Weâre not doing much of anything today, alright? Just a walk around the paddock so you get used to sitting on Buttercup on your own. Iâm not gonna smack her ass and send you down the trail at full tilt..â
That gets a laugh out of you. âYou promise?â
He smiles. âPromise, darlinâ.â
And he keeps it. The only thing you do that day is learn how to tack a horse and how to properly mount and dismount her. The latter part of the lesson is devoted to you trying to find your balance while John leads the two of you around the pen at a leisurely pace. He calms you down when he sees you grow too stiff, stopping to coo and rub your thigh until you gradually relax. Itâs heartwarming until Buttercup begins to tense up too for a reason unbeknownst to you and you watch in righteous fury as John calms her down the same way.
John gets you a hat to keep the sun from beating down on you, but thereâs little he can do about the soreness between your thighs and the stiffness in your legs the next day. All you can do is hiss and moan in pain, hobbling around the house until he forces you down into a chair and hikes up your dress in order to apply an arnica salve to your inner thighs.Â
Itâs a relief and an affront at the same time. The duality of man. The salve soothes much of the ache, but you twitch nervously around John for the rest of the day, the memory of him pinning you to the chair and forcibly spreading your thighs haunting you. The lingering ache in your core is just the salt in the wound.Â
It rains another day. A light drizzle while the sun is still out.
Every day you sit and you think, will it be today? And then the wash basins are emptied out in the field, the horses are taken out to the paddock, you pin the laundry up on the line to dry, and John presses a farewell kiss to your forehead when he leaves you with Kate and nothing happens. Every inch of you waits for more, anticipates more. Throbs when he leaves you wanting, only a chaste kiss and a squeeze around your waist before heâs off.Â
You can feel it coming to a head. An itch you canât shake.Â
That day comes with another ache you canât shake.Â
âPlease,â you beg, clasping your hands in front of you. âOne day of rest. Thatâs all Iâm asking. I canât do this anymore, John.â
John snaps the lead in his hands. âLetâs get a move on. Weâre burning daylight.â
You hang your head low on the march over to the stables, John taking up the rear like he expects you to bolt. An executionerâs walk. The thought of escape has never seemed further awayânot even because of its feasibility, but because all you want to do is lie down and rest.
âYou can quit your moping,â he says as you tack up Buttercup, a pout on your lips. âGot something special for you today.â
That makes you perk up, regardless of the fact that he doesnât specify what that is. Anticipation mounts in you when he helps you up onto Buttercup and then climbs up behind you himself. He steers her away from the paddock and towards the trail leading into the woods, the sun at its zenith now, illuminating everything as far as the eye can see.
Youâve ridden this trail before. A week ago, with John at your back as he is now. Through the fields and over the hills until the trees start to number in the tens and then the hundreds, no clear delineation between plain and forest. Simply there and then everywhere.
By now, after hours of sun beating down on the path, the trail is mostly dry, yesterdayâs rain long since having sunk into the earth. You think itâd still be a tough hike on foot, but on horseback you cover acres of land at a brisk pace, Buttercup hardly breaking a sweat. You cross paths with a small group traveling by horse and wagon, but John breaks off from the path not too long after that, steering Buttercup deeper into the wilderness, where the only gullies are the ones carved out by years and years of rainfall.Â
You only see it when the land begins to dip and youâre forced to hold onto the horn and tighten your thighs around the fenders to keep steady. At the bottom of a hill, a small stream opens up into a larger river, narrowing out at the other end where the land rises again and the water can only trickle over the pebbly riverbed. On the other side, a rocky outcropping cuts the stream off from view.
âIs this where you used to come to bathe?â you ask, recalling an earlier conversation.
John sighs. âThought Iâd take you for a swim as a treat, but if youâd rather just tease meââ
âWell now, letâs not be hasty,â you say, already trying to dismount on your own, eyes glued on the stream glimmering in the sunlight. John chuckles, keeping you pressed to him until he guides Buttercup under a tree for shade and dismounts first, helping you down after him.Â
All you want to do is wade in the stream up to your ankles, so thatâs what you do. Boots kicked off, Buttercup relaxing in the shade of a tree, John standing by the waterâs edge with his hands on his hips and watching you tiptoe over the smooth rocks below. You roll up your pant legs, but eventually you feel the ends grow damp as you venture farther out. At its deepest, you would probably sink up to your waist.
âDonât you want to swim?â John asks from somewhere behind you.
You splash around a bit, kicking your feet through the water. âHard to do that with clothesââ
When you turn back around to face him, your eyes dart down momentarily at the sight of skin before you squeak and whirl back around, sending up an arc of water. Twice now youâve seen him naked.Â
âYouâve no clothes on,â you state, bluntly enough that it almost sounds stupid.Â
You hear the water splash and ripple when he takes his first step in. âRightâyou better think about doing the same if you donât want to ride home soaking wet.â
âI was perfectly fine just getting my feet wet,â you say indignantly. Â
âWe came out here to swim, not get your feet wet,â John laughs. You stiffen when his hand comes down on your shoulder, conscious of the fact that your husband is standing right behind you, entirely divested of his clothes. âSo best get to steppinâ.â
âYou canât make me.â
âOh, honey,â he says pityingly. âYes, I can.â
You squeeze your eyes shut as you make your way back to shore, careful not to allow yourself a glimpse of him. Your boots are stacked beneath the shade of another tree, Johnâs clothes folded neatly beside them. You strip slowly, attentive to the world around you; though unlikely, itâs not impossible that someone might wander by. Your only consolation is that John is still within sight, though you keep your back to him because in recent days, youâve developed a hunger for him that even now makes your stomach hurt. Â
Though the air is warm, you shiver. When you turn around with your arms crossed over your breasts to hide them from sight, you find John wading in the river up to his waist. Youâve seen him like this once before, the hearty body of a man in his prime. Sturdy and strong. The hair on his chest is darker than that on his head, wet too from the dip he must have taken when your back was turned. His hair is slicked back too, a wet hand combing it back.Â
âCome on, darlinâ,â he calls, beckoning you forward with his hand.
The water is a cold shock when you step in past your ankles. Ice cold tendrils wrap up your legs, sucking the warmth from you.Â
You suck in a soft breath when he pulls you into his arms and heaves you up, big hands gripping under your thighs. Your breasts press against the wet skin of his chest, nipples already pebbled. The river is deeper than you assumed; John pulls you deeper in until it pools around your waist and then your chest. Cold enough that you shiver until John dips his head down and the kiss he presses to your lips melts you from the inside out.Â
You canât escape the intimacy of water-slick skin. When John drags you up his chest, your nipples brush over his and the shudder that passes through you is violent, toe-curling. You know that he can feel the heat of your core even underwater. With your legs wound around his waist, every inch of you is plastered to his front. Even your fingers play with the ends of his hair, arms draped over his shoulders. You canât look away.
âCâmon,â he murmurs, breath hot on your face. âEyes on me.â
As if you could look anywhere else.Â
He reaches down under the water to readjust himself and you gasp when his shaft is suddenly right there, trapped between his belly and your heat. Itâs the closest youâve ever gotten to coitus, his glans nestled between your folds. Youâd only have to shift slightly for him to slip right in. The thought makes your breath quicken.Â
He doesnât make a move to take you though, even knowing that he could. How easy it would be. How itâs due to him. Your husband thatâs waited a fortnight to take you as his own. John kisses you until each slick pass of his lips grows sloppier, clumsierâhis lips barely parting from yours before theyâre on you again, rendering you a creature of base needs.Â
But his hands donât shift from your backside where he holds you in place. His fingers dig into the flesh hard enough to bruise, but they donât move to part your folds to make room for his manhood. You expect him toâpractically yearn for it and squeeze him around the neck all the harder when he subverts your expectations, doing no more than letting you grind your heat against the base of his shaft.Â
âJohnâJohn, please,â you beg, mindless for what. You donât know what youâre asking for.Â
âWhat dâya need, darlinâ?â he asks into your mouth, stealing your answer with another kiss.Â
You fall under the swell of another wave. When the root of his cock glides over your clit, your core clenches on nothing, a sob half-bitten off in your mouth, ripped from your chest.Â
It doesnât matter how close to him you getâhe gives you nothing. The heat could very well burn you from the inside out. Cold water caresses your skin as it flows past, but the center of you runs so hot that you hardly notice it.Â
When he hikes you higher up against his chest, you clench your fingers in his hair, whining when he takes your nipple into his mouth. Your gasp comes out sharp and hurt when the coarse bristles of his beard rub rough against your breast. He sucks at your breast tender at first, gentle, eyes half-lidded like his mind has gone somewhere else, but thereâs a glint in his eye that grows wild and dark, that turns him rough. You donât know what to do except shake and let him use you how he wants.Â
Desperation nips at your heels, urging you up the length of him. If you had more nerve, youâd reach down and grasp him under the water, notch the head of his member against your sex and sink right down on him. You need him like you've never needed anything before. Every part of you aflame, searing hot under the sun at its highest point; right overhead, right on top of you.Â
His teeth sink delicately into your areola, tongue lapping over your nipple to soothe the hurt, and suddenly, you break.
âPleaseââ you gasp, wrenching his mouth away from your breast and whimpering when he resists at first, glaring up at you like he might bite. âPlease, JohnâI canât take it. I need you.â
His eyes darken, the pupil swallowing everything up. âNeed me where, wife? Here?â
A hand dips between your thighs, pointer finger gliding over your sex, plump with blood. So tender that your mouth hangs open on a whine when he touches you.Â
âY-yes,â you whimper, gaze swimming.Â
Johnâs breath comes out in a harsh, ragged pant. Completely undone in a way youâve never seen before. âGet out, darlinâ. Iâm taking you home. Gonna give you what you need.â

moon sick. | astarion
âşâş pairing: astarion x f!reader
âşâş wordcount: 2.5k
âşâş genre: smut, established relationship
âşâş rating: 18+, mdni
âşâş synopsis: whilst on the road, you get your period. astarion, being the loving, caring, supportive boyfriend he is, offers to help. he has no ulterior motives. obviously.
âşâş warnings: period sex, bloodplay, unprotected sex, oral sex, dirty talk
you wake with a start, astarionâs cold arm a comforting weight across your waist. you canât think what could have possibly woken you up so suddenly, as you listen for any untoward noises around camp. but thereâs only astarionâs steady, gentle breathing behind you and galeâs obnoxious snoring echoing from the other end of the clearing.
as you settle back down on your bedroll, however, you become aware of something sticky and wet between your legs. could be that a wet dream concerning your beloved has you in such a state, but you donât remember dreaming of him last night. no, now that your senses are returning to you, you remember that last night was reserved for another visit from your so-called guardian. so what ⌠?
you toss your end of the blanket aside and groan, throwing your head back against the pack youâve set out for a makeshift pillow. doing so earns you another yelp; must have made contact with one of the stems of the many apples wedged into your supply bag.
astarion is on his feet in an instant, startling you; you werenât even aware he was awake. not that elves ever truly sleep. it always slightly unnerves you to feel him levitating beside you in his meditative state. â youâre hurt. â his voice is rough, thick with inertia. â i swear iâll find whoever did this and bleed them dry. we should never have trusted that damned cleric; shar this and shar that. iâll shove her blessed shar right up her â â
heâs already kicking his own pack aside to stomp his way out of the tent when you hiss, â astarion! â
luckily heâs not too aggravated to stop and give you a glance back so you can explain in a low murmur, â itâs my cycle ⌠â
astarion stops short, one pale hand clutched to his chest. â oh ⌠i â â he waves that same hand now toward the opening of his tent. â i thought ⌠â
â i know what you thought, â you sigh, more weary knowing whatâs to come over the next 7 days than you are of him, than you could ever be of him. â but itâs not. so just come back to bed. please? â
â i thought youâd never ask ⌠â he purrs, back to his normal self.
unfortunately, youâre doubled over in pain before heâs even halfway back.
â i knew you were in pain. â astarionâs back at your side in a flash. â just tell me who and iâll â â
â i am, â you gasp, â in pain. but ⌠not because anyone hurt me. well, more like mother nature cursed me. â
a particularly bad cramp seizes you and your hand flies out, clutching the front of astarionâs silky tunic. you press your fingers in to feel his cold, broad chest. the sensation calms you a bit ⌠until yet another bout of pain rolls through your midsection.
icy fingers find yours, ghosting over your knuckles. â shall i ⌠see if the druid can make you something? â
you shake your head, tugging at his shirt. â just lay with me. please. â
astarionâs skin is blessedly cool against yours, as it always is. you lean into him, pressing your face against his frigid neck, soothing your burning cheeks.
his glacial hands find the edge of your tunic, and then the small of your back, which helps more than he could possibly know. you shudder against him, pushing, trying to get more of him.
â you know ⌠â astarion sniffs, delicate voice very close to your ear. â i have heard of one thing that is guaranteed to relieve moon sickness. â
pulling back, you glance curiously up at him.
he has that rakish grin on his face that youâve come to know all too well in the past weeks. his reddened eyes roll away from you. â come now, pup. you must know what i mean ⌠sex. â your heart jumps into your throat at the thought; youâre sure astarion can feel it beating harder against his own chest.
suddenly, his mouth is just under your ear, teeth rasping against the exact place heâs fed from you dozens of times before. â i can smell it, my love. â
you donât answer immediately; while you canât deny the thought appeals to you, if for no other reason than to rid yourself of these damnable cramps, youâre also apprehensive. astarion feeding from your neck is one thing â still intimate, but relatively normal by vampire standards. to have astarion feed down there, on that blood, feeding from your womb âŚ
â youâre right, itâs a bad idea, absolutely disgusting. i donât know why i â â
â do it. â
â eh ⌠hm? â
â do it, â you repeat, grasping onto him for dear life as another squeezing, crushing shock of pain settles in your stomach. â please, astarion. i canât take it anymore. â
itâs been many moons since your cycle has been this bad. traveling on the road without proper food or rest may finally be catching up to you, exacerbating things. not much you can do about that until you reach the city, though.
other than letting your vampire lover drink your blood, of course.
laying you gently back without another complaint, astarion slips the blanket off of you and reaches to undo your breeches.
anxiety overtakes you; thereâs already blood on your trousers and the blanket, youâre going to have to wash them in the river as soon as youâre able. you canât even imagine the scene underneath your pants ⌠but youâre about to find out.
gently, astarion prizes the trousers from your legs, then gasps softly. â oh, my love ⌠â
prying your eyes from the ceiling of the tent, you finally look down. astarion is there, of course, looking lovely as always. except, however, the lines on his face look deeper, almost carved, and the dark circles under his eyes are darker, his eyes redder.
another spell of panic grips you; bright red blood is smeared across your inner thighs.
astarion looks dizzy as he takes you in, cold hands cradling the outsides of your legs. youâre about to apologize and shove him away, tell him this is a mistake, in fact you will ask halsin to make you something â and thatâs when astarion mutters, â you are exquisite, â and dives in to have his first taste.
the feeling of his tongue on your thighs makes you shiver, and the cool night air wafting in from the tent flap isnât helping. you grab the clean end of the blanket and drape your upper half, canting your hips up to tell astarion what it is you truly want.
because even through all the anxiety, thereâs also a bubble of arousal blooming between your legs. astarion canât tell, of course, not through all the blood down there, but you sure as hell can. you have the most perfect creature youâve ever set eyes on between your legs; how could you not be aroused?
â all in due time, â astarion chuckles, voice muffled against your thighs as he continues to clean you up. thoroughly. too thoroughly.
â you always tease, â you whine, knocking one of your knees against his ribcage.
this time when his gaze flashes sharply to you, his eyes are the reddest youâve ever seen them. it makes you shake.
astarionâs nails dig into your hips, deliciously, wickedly. you tremble, reaching for him. he chuckles and kisses the inside of one of your wrists, which leaves a smear of blood. â always such a needy little pup for me, arenât you? â
you donât even have time to nod before he dives back in, his mouth exactly where you want it this time. his lips suction around your clit, tongue lapping out lower down to scoop a sizeable pearl of blood into his mouth.
this time, astarion is the one who shakes. he lays his cheek against your still-bloody thigh and shudders. â youâre going to be the death of me, â he sighs, and you can see him skirting his tongue around his mouth, flitting over his lips, savoring you.
you huff. â youâll be of me, too, if you donât keep going. â
â so pushy, â your lover mutters, but thereâs absolutely no heat in his words as he obeys your command and buries his face back into your blood-soaked cunt.
for a while you just lie back and enjoy yourself, and let astarion enjoy himself as well. his arms are strong around your legs, holding you in place so you canât squirm away. it feels way too damn good, you may have been tempted to try. but as it is, you canât do anything but revel in the silky feeling of astarionâs tongue lapping up everything you have to give him, his fangs catching every so often on your clit, making you see stars.
at some point, you glance down at him and gasp. â your shirt! â
you know how much he prides himself on his physical appearance, and now thereâs blood staining the front ruffles of his normally immaculate tunic.
he glances down and tuts, frowning. â oh well. itâll have to go with the rest. â just like that, he rips it off and tosses it with your soiled trousers.
he must be in heaven, you suspect, if heâs willing to discard his cherished clothing for you.
now shirtless, astarion gives one last gentle kiss to your clit and then slowly starts to climb your body. thereâs blood dripping from his chin, staining the rest of the blanket wrapped around you. but more importantly, his broad chest is skating up the expanse of your bloody cunt as he comes, and your clit throbs seeing all that red coating his torso.
â astarion! â you gasp, and he grins, mouth full of your blood.
â iâm loathe to ask you for a kiss, â he whispers, so low you can barely hear him. â just one. i promise. â
you swallow thickly, and he waits for you to lean up, pressing your lips to his in the softest kiss you can manage. blood squishes between you, and you can feel it coating your lips as you lie back down.
one lap of your tongue against your bottom lip and you grimace, spitting and rubbing at your mouth with the back of one hand.
astarion laughs heartily as you mutter, â ugh, not for me. â
â more for me, â astarion says, almost gleefully.
heâs obviously preparing to get back to it, but you keep him close with your hands on his shoulders. â i want you. â
brows furrowed, astarion squeezes your waist. â darling, you have me. â
â inside, â you beg quietly, which you know enjoys immensely.
your next step might be a mistake, but you decide to chance it. bracing yourself with your legs wrapped around him, you thrust up, dragging your wetness along the front of his trousers. you can feel that heâs hard, and now thereâs blood all over his pants. youâre hoping he wonât mind, considering his tunic is already ruined for the night as well.
luckily he doesnât seem to, dark gaze sweeping down over the two of you covered in your blood, and then back up. â i thought youâd never ask. â
his trousers quickly follow his tunic, erection jutting up between your legs.
â he looks happy, â you giggle, as his swollen head prods at your blood-soaked entrance.
â to see you? always. â
having astarion inside of you is normally a relief, a release of all the rampant, pent up emotions this journey has bestowed upon you.
tonight is different.
with all that blood flowing south, your womb is aching, you're sore and swollen as astarionâs cock spears through your lips. every thrust sends a fresh flow of blood down his shaft, which earns you a tight growl from the vampire as he takes the backs of your knees in hand and shoves your thighs back toward your chest, eager to get even deeper inside of you.
and youâre eager to have him, nails digging into his chiseled back, the hard marble of his jaw knocking against your shoulder as his lips, slick with blood, find your ear again. â are you feeling better, pet? does my cock soothe that ache inside of you? the ache that raged inside of you, until you met me? until i filled you up in every lovely way possible? â
his words make your brain go haywire, knees shaking around his ribcage, toes curling, your mouth rubbing comfortingly at his cool shoulder.
more than that, you do feel better. the more aroused you become, the more blood flows out of you, the less painful your cramps become. until youâre pushing down against him, trying to ride him at the same time as heâs shoving himself inside of you with reckless abandon. until you canât remember why you started this in the first place, other than to wind up begging for him to finish inside of you.
â inside. please, astarion, inside ⌠â itâs hard to even think clearly enough to form words, your mind consumed with the sight of his beautiful body moving atop yours.
you assume heâll make you beg, as he so often does; he loves hearing the desperate, pleading tone in your voice that tells him all he needs to know â you belong to him.
but he doesnât. he fucks into you as hard as he ever has, his thick cock gliding against your engorged walls, making your eyes roll back.
and then the talking starts. the words that make you wish you knew whether or not vampires can actually have children. â you want me to get you pregnant, love? want your belly to swell with my child inside of it? i will wait on you hand and foot, i promise. i would love seeing you walk around knowing you hold my heir, that you protected my seed so well that it grew into a child inside of you. â astarion pauses momentarily to laugh, tugging your earlobe between his teeth. â with all this blood, i know you must be fertile. â
both of you share a laugh, briefly.
and when you cum, together, he sinks his teeth into your neck with nothing but a quiet grunt, cockhead twitching and spurting inside of you.
you mewl softly, feeling the vampire trembling and shaking as he empties himself into you. your hands pet through his hair, soothe the back of his neck, across the scars circling his back.
the pain from before is nowhere to be found, replaced instead by a warm, fizzy feeling sitting low in your gut. astarion is bracing himself on his elbows above you, with obvious effort.
you pull him down to lay atop you; heâs not exceptionally heavy anyway.
â i love you, â he sighs, nestling his face, chin still slick with blood, against your collarbone. â and ⌠promise me we can do that again. â
â i love you. and i promise. â

Part 3

"Missing: If found dead or alive, please contact the authorities"
Dick feels like he's about to puke, every time he sees that fucking poster, every time it's played in the news
He feels like he failed, not just as Nightwing, but as a brother, he was supposed to be a protector, projecting you as a vigilante and as a hero
Everything keeps replaying in his head, how you were always out of theme in family photos because Damian keeps telling you the wrong one, but no one bothers to tell you the real one
How in a single day, everything you've ever built was abandoned, your room, your school, your friends (he wasn't sure if you had any) (ps: you didn't, Damian wouldn't let it happen)
How no one was there to help
And he saw another poster "bring back dead or alive"
He wasn't sure how he's going to accept if you're actually dead
Because if you're alive, there could be a chance, he'd apologize to you, and he knows you're kind enough to accept it, he'll spend lost time with you, and everything will be fine
But with every minute that passes, it feels like slowly you are pulling away further from him (if it's still possible that you could be pulled further than you are now)

"How long are you gonna keep disappointing me like this...?" Bruce sighed deeply
He got your report card, funny enough, the only time he sees you is when you do something wrong
And it wasn't like you failed either, it's just that it's lower than what your siblings got, it's lower than his standards
Well sorry you're not Tony Stark level, am I right? Ahaha-
You weren't stupid, you just weren't as smart as your siblings, in your defense you were smarter than them at some other stuff, it's just that it's the stuff your father didn't care about
"Dad are you finally throwing out the anchor?" Damian snickered
You huff at the insult, knowing if you insult him back you'll get in trouble "it's not even that bad-"
Jason furrows his brows "yeah, but it's not good enough, I hope you realize how lucky you are compared to the other kids in Gotham, you should repay it by being outstanding"
"And not to mention as the first born biological child you should uphold yourself to the standards given to you, if you can't do that then stand down" Tim scoffs at you
That comment may or may not be from an insecurity that he isn't Bruce's real kid (despite being more loved than you)
"don't you think you're being too dramatic? I don't even want that stupid company" you grit your teeth
"that stupid company is what keeps a roof over your head, stop being so ungrateful"
Damian's face has that shit-eating grin once again "throw it out the streets maybe then it'll know"
It's always that fucking suggestion that throws you off, every fight, they call you a burden in this house, they want you out
You feel like if it weren't going to be a legal problem Bruce would have done it
"you guys are so full of yourselves, I don't know where you pull the 'i'll fix Gotham' mentality when you can't even fix your own issues" you grab your grades and leave
"You fucking-" you hear Damian say but you ran to your room, to the far corner of the Manor, a guest bedroom (you were kicked out of your master bedroom when Damian came, his reason was "it's too stressful seeing it everyday", so they moved you)
______________________
Present
"Diana...?" Bruce calls
"Diana!, what is it!?" Bruce yells "What do you see?"
Diana looks like she's about to cry, as she examines the footage in front of her
another demigod dead
She thinks, her hands shaking at the sight of another child, like she once was, dying at the hands of those monsters who hunt them down
Does Bruce know? It didn't seem like he did, if he knew- he would have protected the kid right?
Then she sees light, she sees the little kid run into the garden, and meet nymphs, she sees the kid escape
"oh thank the gods..." She whispered
Without saying another word, she left the tower, leaving the others confused, she knew where the kid was
(Name) was safe at camp

ęˇęŚęˇęŚęˇęˇęŚęˇęŚęˇęˇęŚęˇęŚęˇęˇęŚęˇęŚęˇęˇęŚęˇęŚęˇ
Luke Castellan has always been your protector and best friend.Â
A two-in-one deal that you couldnât help but thank the gods for every time you throw your offerings into the hearth at mealtimes. He always has your best interest in mind, is always devoted to taking care of you, and puts you first over anyoneâso who else would you depend on to walk you home from a beach party?
Bad things happen around here at Camp Half-Blood, especially after dark, if weâre being honest. It would only be sufficient to have campâs best hero be your escort back to your cabin. Youâre giggling like a fool as Luke half-carries you through the dirt pathway toward home, purple slippers tucked in his back pocket and his thumb grazing the sliver of skin that peeks out above your daisy dukes.Â
It would be wrong of him to leave you like this. Truly, what type of best friend would he be if he did? He knows you have admirersâyouâre beautiful, for one. And itâs in your nature to be desired by all, though he supposes even without your blood being mixed with ichor that everyone would still look at you the way they do. And it angers him more than it should, a slow bubbling in his stomach that boils through to the surface whenever anyone leers at you or ogles your form as something they hope to have, or worseâconquer. Vincent from Cabin 4 was bold enough to try, growing flowers at will and weaving them into your hair, touching you and decorating youâmaking it known to the others that he got close enough to something sacred. By the time Luke got to the party tonight, the son of Demeter had a smile that would make anyone think heâd won the lotto.
Well, Vincent wonât make that mistake again. Luke made sure of it.
Tonight alone was evidence enough that no one takes what belongs to him. But Luke has more pressing problems at hand as he leads you further away from the crowd, like how you keep pressing your soft hands into the growing bulge of his cargo shorts, a sly grin illuminating your face and a simple, âOopsie!â each time you do it. The both of you know what youâre blatantly hinting at after the third pass, and heâd be an idiot to ignore the way your arms wrap around his neck, knees buckling as you beg him to divert your journey towards the lakeâwhichever way that may be; youâre drunk off cheap vodka and heâs drunk off the smell of sweat and salt on your skin.
You feel like youâre flying, squealing like Lukeâs tickling you as he carries you in his arms. Thereâs something in him that loves the way you pretend to resist, like how prey fall limp in a predatorâs hold just in case they might lose interestâbut how could he? Youâre mouthing at his collarbone, tongue tracing out the letters of your name and your body pliant under his grasp. His skin is impermanently marked where no one can see, yet heâs yours either way, especially when you tease him like this, cooing, âLuke, come onnnnâŚ.â
âShhhâŚsilly girl, theyâll hear you.â
The boy is grinning and has his hands wrapped under your armpits; in your drunken haze, you think it might be the wind or his long fingers caressing the underwire of your bra as he sets you down against him, back to his chest and legs dipping in the warm waters of Canoe Lake. You lean into him nonetheless, pulling your best friend in with a cute pout until heâs putty in your hands. Heâd do anything for you. And right now, youâre hyperaware of that.
âStopâŚdonât move,â he breathes, eyes fluttering as you wiggle against his lap and wrap his arms tighter around you, engulfing your frame from any stragglers that might be heading back from the bonfire. But Luke made sure youâd be alone tonight, your cheek against his as you both observe how the moon reflects the water. Your face is warm against his and he feels the imprint of your smile taking form by how it feels against his jaw, âMâjust playing Lu. You know that, right?â
Clenching his jaw he smiles stiffly at you, and he silently thanks the gods youâre too drunk to notice his disappointment. He knows you love thisâreveling in any attention you give him, drunk kisses in the moonlight and wandering hands doing very unfriendly things that he wishes youâd actually want to talk to him about in the morning. But when youâre not with him, your attention is elsewhereâpreening over being treated like the ultimate prize. He was just easy access for you. And you still wonât think it means anything.
So as a typical son of Hermes, he takes matters into his own hands, literally taking you, even if youâre not his. Itâs all the same to him, really, and youâre the one pushing his palms into the cotton cups of your bra. Youâre using him because heâs there, and whatever this is will have to do for now.
âGotta stay quiet fâmeâŚstay still, okay?â
Luke unzips your shorts, tracing slow circles into your sodden underwear as you bite down on your bottom lip and look at him all needy. It almost looks like desire, but he wants you to mean it. He needs to make sure youâre devoted to him tooânot just when you spread your legs and moan his name into the quiet of the night.
Being desired might be your domain, but deception is his. By morning, theyâll find Vincent's body floating in the very lake that your legs are writhing in. While youâre busy with the feeling of his fingers delving in and out of your warmth, he plans on how to get you to cum hard enough so that your eyes stay closed and ignore the smaller details, like the smell of blood on the rocks, and the Demeter boyâs flowers heâs been plucking out of your hair since you started your rendezvousâdrifting back towards the still-warm body of their owner.
Youâll see how much you mean to him. Heâs made sure of it.

Engagement bliss
Leah Williamson x arnold!reader
âYouâre gonna call me when you can yeah?â Leah asked as she held both your hands while you leaned into her body. You were both saying goodbye to each other as you were travelling to Florida with your Australian teammates for camp, while Leah would stay in England for Lionessesâs Camp.
Your first camp engaged.
As well as hers, but her first camp back since her ACL injury, you were on the edge of tears at the thought of how proud you were.
âOf course I always doâ you said pulling her arms down slightly towards you that held yours, placing a long kiss on her lips
âDonât loose it ay?â Leah said with a cheeky smile, pulling your left hand up in between your close met faces. Tapping the shiny ring on your finger.
âI wonât. Promise. Ditto yeah?â You said now holding up her hand with the ring you gave to her after she proposed. She interlocked both the hands that were up and kissed your knuckles. âProud of youâ you said softly. Maybe for the 10th time just this morning
âThank you. Iâm proud of you, always, but you know thatâ she said shrugging with a grin.
âOkay I should goâ you said looking at your Watch, âI love youâ you said kissing her again, lips lingering longer.
âLove you miss you alreadyâ Leah said, causing your face to scrunch up at the corny comment, you pulled away from her embrace and grabbed your suitcase she had wheeled in for you. You blew her a kiss before you walked up to Steph, Caitlin, Charli, Kyra and MacKenzie, your âLondon Aussiesâ.
âFucks sake Throw me in front of a speeding truck alreadyâ Kyra groaned, dreading the upcoming flight, as you all walked towards your terminal
âOh?â You and Steph said, concern and confusion.
âItâs just 9 and a half hours darlingâ you said rubbing the young girlâs head roughly.
âCome on pick up the paceâ Caitlin said to the group, skipping, as you were all walking too slow the for the given time left you had the catch boarding
âI canâtâ you said slowly as you yawned.
âLeahâs excited Iâm assuming?â Your sister Mackenzie asked about Leahâs return to England Camp.
âOver the moonâ you smiled as you nodded âI donât know why she was sappier than usual about me leaving. While sheâs barely gonna even think about me in campâ
âPlease, The girlâs engaged and captaining England again. Yeah sheâs on camp but I promise you she wonât stop thinking about youâ she assured you as you both smiled. âFar out Iâm gonna get so many messages from that girl, frantic, because she canât reach youâ you both laughed, reminiscing the multiple times that had happened.
âThatâs because you always tell her Iâve been kidnapped or something!â âItâs funny!â

ââââââââââââ
You could feel your body starting to give itself out slowly as you grew tired. You had been running some basic drills as you and your national team settled into the first session of the camp.
The Florida weather was nice, felt a bit more like home compared to England, but nothing like the Australian warm weather. You were excited at the reminder that you, Macca, Lani, Caitlin and Hayley would all head to the beach as soon as possible after training.
As you anticipated, all of your teammates that didnât live in London and could not make it to your engagement dinner were fawning over your ring. Them just as excited as you. The Matildaâs media photographer had gotten you and Ellie to pose with your left hands up for a photo with both your rings.
Heaps of your national trainers commented on the fact that the engagement was radiant on your face and your energy was through the roof, causing you to smile ear to ear.
By the end the session, you were playing a game of 5-aside oztag. You had yourself, Sharn, Teagan, Michelle and Hayley on your team.
âGames over!â You exclaimed laying on the ground, when Caitlin had shoved you to the ground for the 10th time in the 20 minute game.
âSore loser!â Caitlin yelled as she kicked the ball to your head before you quickly rolled away to dodge Caitlinâs good aim.
âThatâs not even how you playâ You yelled to your best friend as she made her way back from the try line.
âYes it isâ She laughed, whilst Michelle helped you off the ground.
âGreat job today girls. Have a good afternoon Iâll see you tonightâ Tony smiled at you all, letting you know you could head back to the bus.
On the bus you were leaned against the window, legs sprawled out against both seats in the row. Talking to Alanna who sat across from you in the same position. âIâm sorry again I couldnât make it to your dinner last weekâ she smiled at you.
âAre you kidding me. I understand completely. Getting to see you here is just as amazing for meâ
Alanna just laughed. Causing you to scrunch your eyebrows at her, you had only said something sweet.
âYou sound so much like herâ she laughed
âWho Leah?â You smiled
âYes!â
âHowâ you couldnât help but laugh
âThe accent. You sound English now! Youâre picking up on her too much. Donât be turning English on us now y/nâ you both laughed. âNo but it was a nice offer from her for your dinner. And I love the fact that she told me she was going to propose before she didâ Lani grinned.
âDid she actuallyâ you said smiling
âYes! She made a group chatâ she said walking over to you, shifting your legs so they were now on top of her thighs and she took up the seat. Pulling out her phone to show you.

WHAT THIS IS NEWS
Alanna
OMG
Caitlin
HUH I ANTICIPATED A MONTH
You couldnât help but laugh at the small group chat your girlfriend has created. The texts managed to go on past your engagement when Mackenzie shared a video of the moment all of your teammates saw you and became obsessed with the ring. Which turned into them ganging up on you about something else, âHang onâ you stopped Lani from scrolling
âUh uh!â She shoved her phone away making you both laugh.
âYou better add me to that chat!â
âNeverâ
âââââââââââ
âCmon!â you squealed. Pulling Caitlinâs hand as you both sprinted down the sand, Hayley filming the sweet moment. The sunset was electric and perfect. Around 10 of your teammates were already on the beach on a large blanket. Taking loads of photographs of the scenery surrounding you that you had all missed.
After 20 minutes of laying on Kyraâs lap and enjoying the water in front of you, talking with the people you missed most. The left pocket of your shorts started to buzz.
You immediately knew it was your fiancĂŠ, so you picked the phone up as you got up and walked away from the group. Every single one of them mocking the way you blushed and picked up the phone saying âhey babyâ.
âShove it up your assâ You yelled back at them as the mocking didnât stop. You heard Leahâs warm chuckle on the other side of the phone.
âWho was thatâ she asked
âMost of the girls. They are mocking the way I talk to youâ you said into the phone making you both laugh. âTell me everything! Photos arenât enoughâ
Leah talked on for ages about how camp was going for her. Friends, trainings, rooming alone, being engaged at camp, travel and the âtoo spicyâ food. The more she talked the more she managed the full your heart even more.
âWhat about you?â Iâve talked enoughâ
âOh my girl I could listen to you for mothsâ you said softly âyeah itâs great. Iâm very excited to play on Monday. Everyone is ready alreadyâ you said before hearing a few moments of silence on her end of the call âLeah?â
She just laughed
âWhat?â
âI was sent a video of you from a group chat of me, your sister, Alanna and Caitlin. Youâre Looking relaxed on the beach thereâ Leah chuckled
âThat damn group chat!â You exclaimed. âAdd me to it! Iâve got fomoâ
You did happen to be laying on the sand, by yourself, phone pressed up to your ear. In sight of your cheeky teammates. You sat up slightly to give them your middle finger.
âNo we have a truce. We canât add you. You donât have fomo, you just donât want us talking about youâ
âYeah fomo!â You said making her laugh again, â and a truce?!â
âHavenât lost the ring yet darling?â Leah said in that tone that could send you spinning
âNup. Iâm staring at it right now. Hoping you have yours onâ
âOf courseâ she said
âI understand what everyone means. You really just canât stop staring at it. Like itâs not even the ring itâs like the fact that itâs my engagement ring. From youâ
âI canât keep my eyes off of it. How could I. Itâs a symbol of youâ Leah said softly
âI love you. I need to go now they are packing up cause itâs dark now. I miss you Lee, Iâm proud of you like you donât even knowâ
âIâm proud of you. You call me when you get up in the morning. Iâll be sure to be awake. Love you, miss youâ
âByeâ you both said before hanging up and you made your way up to the group that were half way up the beach waiting for you, you smiling in appreciation of it at them.
âââââââââââ
Leah
âHave you gotten the photos back?â Georgia asked me as I refreshed my email account on my laptop for the hundredth time.
âNo. And itâs kind of frustrating. Heâs taking a week longer than he said he wouldâ
âWhat photos are we talking about?â Mary asked
âThe professional photos from Leahâs engagement. They are taking too long apparentlyâ Keira explained
âMates probably sold them to the internet firstâ Mary shrugged
âDonât joke about thatâ i laughed, worry lingering in my tone
âI thought you wanted the moment to be super private?â Mary asked
âNo it was. There was no one else. He came like 20 minutes later, as well as our families. I managed to surprise y/n with herâsâ I grinned at the thought of the moment as I explained to the three girls at the table
âWell Iâm very excited to see themâ Keira said
Me and y/n announced our engagement on our instagram via a simple selfie we took together just 10 minutes after I got down on one knee. She laughed brightly in the photo as we both held our hands with the rings up for the camera, me kissing her cheek, and a tear stained face y/n. As well as me posting a small snippet of the moment I first asked her. I had set my phone down to video, somehow without her batting an eye. We are both all for living in the moment.
But honestly, I knew getting to look back on it in a video would be so special with her.
We agreed we couldnât keep it in for too long the next day, so could not possibly wait for the professional photos taken. Just two very excited people.
ââââââââââ
Y/n
While your Australian Captain and close friend Sam had unfortunately done her ACL, as was still out. You had been given the position to Captain your country whilst her injury. You would also officially Captain your country at the Olympics in July and August.
You were called up alongside Tony for MD-1 press conferences at camp whilst being captain. And you actually really enjoyed them.
âReady y/n?â Tony asked as you got out of the car and were walking into the stadium. Pulling a thumbs up to the camera crew following you both for the Matildaâs all-access video.
When you were both later settled into the conference room, you shuffled your chair in closer to the microphone before it began. Questions were at first fired at Tony, on camp call up describes and inside training decisions made by the staff.
The first question that was directed to you made you smiled when the short lady started âHello y/n, just wanted to start by congratulating you and Leah on your engagement last weekâ she smiled up at you
You laughed slightly and smiled wide back âThank you very much I appreciate itâ you nodded, motioning her to continue with the question before she asked you about the preparations in the team and how the team feels about being in sunny Florida.
âAnd also the team just- well you know we are coming from all around the world I would say, different seasons. And I know, coming from cold London that it is such a refresher being in this weather for walking around and relaxing purposes I guessâ
âAnd training purposes Iâm hoping?â Tony asked, making the room laugh
âThatâs the most important one yesâ You laughed
After 15 minutes, as the conference was soon to be closed. You got asked a question mentioning your engagement once again. âItâs your first camp being engaged. How does that feel?â
You tried to keep professional and not focus on your own relationship too much, âYeah the support is real with this team, always is, and it radiates off the happy feeling we all get when we fly to camp. Itâs all been, exciting for me and some of the girls have said the same to me so thatâs a nice feelingâ you said nodding towards her sweetly
âIâm hoping from y/n, this gives her a happy boost to get heaps of goals in on Sunday!â Tony says to you making you laugh and agree.
âWe will end it there if there are no more questions, thank you everyoneâ the media manager announced
âThank youâ you mumbled quietly into your microphone before stepping out of the chair.
Receiving a text from your fiancĂŠ one you reached the car outside the stadium waiting to take you back to the hotel.
Leah
Spoken like a true Captain
Y/n
How did u watch that?
Leah
YouTube live darlingđ
Y/n
Iâll be sure to watch yours then
ââââââââââ
You had played both games against Mexico and were leaving the hotel for the airport. It was 2am and safe to say the last thing you were in the middle for was getting on a nearly 10 hour flight. But the idea of Leah picking you up and getting to spend time with her at the end of the day motivated you not just fall asleep and miss your flight.
âY/nnnnâ Caitlin sung out as she opened your door. Bag of chips in her hand from the vending machine. âTime to go!â
âI could have been changingâ you said, unplugging your phone charger from the wall
âMmâ Caitlin nodded, mouth full of chips âyou should consider locking thisâ she tapped the door handle behind her before reaching for your suit case to wheel it out of the room, you following behind the your other bag as you closed the door.
12 hours later, you were finally out of security after they had to open your bag as hey suspected something. Which they were wrong about and apologised. And took out 10 minutes of your time.
All was pushed off your shoulders when you saw your favourite person standing in her jeans, your sweater, her favourite cream Uniqlo bag and a yellow bouquet of flowers in her hand.
It was a tradition for both of you whether Leah was at her own camp or not, she would greet you with a different colour of flowers and open arms at the airport when you reached London once again after camp.
You picked up the pace on your feet before letting go of your suitcase and jumping into her arms, sealing both your lips together with a kiss. Before she hugged you even tighter with a smile as you nuzzled your head into her neck, kissing her shoulder.
âI missed youâ you said kicking your feet like a toddler in your fiancĂŠâs arms, which she always found adorable and drove her crazy
âIâm sure I missed you moreâ she smiled before stealing your lips again and setting you down
âHmm noâ you said. Before she handed you the bouquet. âI love you. Thank youâ
âMy honourâ she patted her chest in a jokingly matter, before you wrapped your arms around her neck again and kissing her for longer, and most definitely not for the last time that evening. âHey youâve still got itâ she said softly as she held your left hand and caressing the finger the ring laid on.
You nodded with a smile whilst Leah wheeled your suitcase to her car as you walked. âIâm starvingâ you said watching her lift the suitcase into the trunk before you both settled inside the car.
âGood thing there is food in the back seatâ you grinned, Leah turning on the car, you shot your head to the back seat to be met with nothing but some rubbish from Leah that had been there for weeks.
âWhere?â You asked
âIâm jokingâ she mumbled before you slapped her shoulder hard âow Iâm about to driveâ Leah whined
âThatâs not funny!â You laughed
âYouâre right itâs not. Letâs go get food nowâ Leah smiled at you sweetly and rubbing your thigh whilst she drove.
âFine with me!â You smiled contently before grabbing the hand that rested on you before bringing it to your lips and kissing it âthank you fiancĂŠâ
Leah chuckled at the comment, making her cheeks warm up âthat wonât stop until we actually get married will it?â She said
âNahâ

On the False Dragonets of Destiny
Recycled art... Forgive me, I can't physically draw more than I currently am.
Just a little while ago I was looking at some replies to my recent work, and I noticed a nice comment from someone who expressed they enjoyed my comics featuring the false dragonets of destiny, but couldn't really get into them in the books. I am thankful for that comment, but even more thankful for the opportunity to ramble at length about something I kind of wanted to talk about, but couldn't find a plausible excuse for. Until now.
All of this is just my reading of the material, of course. You don't need to agree with me on this.
Content Warning: Some discussion of abuse, trauma, violence. I don't know if it's severe enough to warrant a warning, but better be safe.
General discussion
The false dragonets of destiny, the alternates, or whatever one wants to call them. They enter the story proper in book 4, after having made a few minor cameo appearances before, and serve as a kind of hybrid antagonistic force and pseudo-allies for Starflight during his stay on the Nightwing Isle. During that time, they are very abrasive, stand-offish, uncooperative, and a bit annoying, and I guess that doesn't make them come off very well. But like, in spite of that or maybe partially because of it, I am really fond of these guys, and I'd like to take some time talking them up to you.
One can examine how these guys act and conclude that they are a bunch of dysfunctional screw-ups. And they absolutely are that, don't get me wrong. But one should keep in mind: the majority of the time they are in the spotlight, they are in an extreme, tense, and frighteningly uncertain situation. It's easy to forget how stressful these situations are because the books as a whole really like to gloss over the more frightening kind of subjects on account of being written for young readers. You can't really go deep into themes of abuse, trauma, and depression in a story like that without tripping over some kind of censor on the way, but the implications are there, between the lines for you to find.
Understanding the group
Who are the false dragonets of destiny? They are posited as a mirror image of the true dragonets of destiny, who have all been extensively schooled in matters of education and martial prowess. The first thing we see THIS group do on page is brawl, so one may think they must be trained and capable fighters. Viper and Flame constantly throw around death threats and aggressive quips, so one may think they are hyper-violent and dangerous. They are neither. Nautilus admits the Talons haven't bothered training them at all, they haven't seen real combat, they've likely been deliberately kept away from the war as a whole. Flame doesn't even know how to use his fire breath correctly. Starflight, who is by far the least physically adept of the arc 1 protagonists, is able to outpace them even as four of them team up against him.
They are neither killers nor a crack team of badasses, rather they are a bunch of play-fighting, posing delinquents who talk a big game with little in terms of actual skill to back it up. Realizing this is key to understanding just how out of their depth and ill-equipped they are to handle anything that gets thrown at them on the Nightwing homeland, especially past the negotiations at the Skywing outpost.
Abduction and imprisonment
When Starflight first finds them, they have been on the Nightwing Isle for a good while, and they are suitably bristly because of it.
Look at this situation from their perspective. These guys have known nothing other than their semi-peaceful life in the Talon camp. Then the leader of that camp, Nautilus--a figure they all know and trust, essentially sells them to a frightening stranger, who looms over them and is so physically large he could crush each of them easily. This stranger pulls them away from their home without even giving them a chance to say goodbye to their relatives (I'm convinced Avalanche would not have let Morrowseer take her son if there was a chance to intervene, so Flame must have already been gone when she found out).
A contingent of Nightwing awaits them, blindfolds them so they don't know where the entrance to the Nightwing home is. They pass through a kind of eldritch tunnel that pulls at their souls. When they are finally allowed to see again, they find themselves trapped on an island where there is no sunlight and every breath hurts as the air is thick with ash.
The Nightwings won't let them leave, in fact they don't know if they will ever be able to leave again. Nobody tells them what's going on, what they are meant to do, or what the plan is. They are left confined in some room with nothing to do, and they (sans Fatespeaker) can't go outside without being arrested. Food is brought very infrequently, and usually inedible, so they haven't eaten since they were forced to leave home. They don't know where they are, nor where their parents are, nor if their parents know where THEY are. They are completely cut off from anywhere, isolated, trapped in this little slice of hell with no means to escape and little hope to acquire any soon.
I think if I was in a situation like that, I would be pretty cranky too. More than that, I would be scared out of my wits, and I believe that they are as well. If you look at their actions through a lens of them being frightened, their irritating quirks suddenly become very relatable. Viper is coping by throwing out threats and making herself seem bigger and scarier than the thing trapping her. Flame makes offensive jokes about killing Fatespeaker because making light of the situation helps him keep his wits together. Ochre is hard to read, but I think he's just tuning everything out. Squid is convinced that his father--who is the most important and smart dragon in all of Pyrrhia--has made the correct choice and knows what's best for all of them. And Fatespeaker is in complete denial, choosing to trust an inaccurate vision of the future while ignoring all the red flags that don't fit into it.
I think it's interesting that you can read this as all of them having a different strategy to cope with the uncertain and frightening situation they're trapped in. That's part of why I like them; they're very flawed and make interesting decisions.
Trauma and Empathy
You can look at someone like Squid and see his surface traits: He is annoying, he whines and complains constantly, he brags about who his father is, and he seems completely incapable of doing anything useful. If this guy was in any other story, I would probably dislike him. But Squid has the benefit of being a whiny dweeb in a situation where it is very appropriate to whine and be scared. He has a scene where he makes a somewhat goofy speech at Morrowseer where he calls him stupid and wants to go home, and is subsequently exiled. It's a bit silly in execution, but for me it did succeed in making me feel bad for Squid as he desperately and pathetically pleads for Morrowseer not to send him to his death.
But then you can read beyond the lines a little and view the scene in the full context that isn't really dwelt on. Here, you've got Squid, who is inept even among his peers, sheltered and doted on by his father, whom he has never been away from for any real amount of time until now. This guy, who probably can't even feed himself (otherwise he might have been able to catch fish in the waters around the island), keeps telling himself that his father has a plan, that all of this, even the questionable stuff, is happening for a reason. He hasn't eaten in weeks and he's been the punching bag for everyone else's frustrations (because Fatespeaker is not around enough, hanging out with Starflight). Now he has been chased halfway across the world, forced to cross the ocean while tired and starving, to be told he has to talk to a bunch of violent strangers who hate his kind and want to kill him. He tries to hide but is grabbed by the throat and held in the air by a soldier twice his size. This is likely the first time his life has ever been threatened that directly and with genuine intent.
The strange new Nightwing who was sent with them somehow manages to deescalate the situation enough to save him, but then, without warning, more dragons burst into the room. Suddenly everything is on fire, including the soldiers who just a moment ago threatened him. He is close enough to them to watch their forms twist and writhe in agony as they slowly burn to death.
As he is made to watch this horrifying spectacle, all the feelings he repressed by reminding himself of the faith he has in his father come flooding back in at once. It becomes too much for him to bear, and he breaks. He starts crying and verbally lashes out at their abuser for the horrid conditions they have been placed in and demands--half asserting and half pleading--to be allowed to go home. This isn't really whining anymore, this is a full-scale mental breakdown, rendered to be simple and digestible to a young audience. Imagine how harrowing this scene could have been if it wasn't filtered through a child-friendly narrative.
Closing thoughts
There is a scene some time after that I found kind of poignant. At one point, Starflight looks out and he sees Flame just standing out there, silently staring into the distance. There's maybe one line dedicated to it, and when you read the book normally, you don't really dwell on it since it's so nondescript. But this scene happens shortly after the visit to the remote outpost. The soldiers that burned to death in there were all Skywings. Skywings like himself, and like his mother, who also was a soldier before she joined the Talons. Whenever I picture him standing there, I imagine he is reliving that moment, hearing the dying screams of his kinsmen. I think he will be hearing them forever.
So in conclusion: The reason why I like the alternate dragonets so much is because of the enormous, untapped potential they possess as characters, and how deep some of them run if you take some time to look at them. I feel like all of them have a story to tell, and it's a bit of a shame that Sutherland likely won't come around to telling any of them. If I had infinite time, money, and energy, I would love to make many more comics about them, as they are an interesting lot.
Especially Flame's story I feel is such a heartbreaking tragedy, and thinking about the way it ended saddens me. He's one of my six all-time favorite characters in the series, I wish he could have gone out in a happier, healthier way.

Little Burrow | Joe Burrow
In which little burrow suprises his dad during training
⌠. ăâş ă . ⌠. ăâş ă . âŚ
"Mommy! Mommy! I'm ready," y/n's son Mason shouted as he came running into the kitchen.
Y/n lifted her head from the lunch box she was preparing for her three-year-old son and looked over at Mason.
The little blond-haired boy proudly presented his mother with his Bengals jersey, which he was wearing backwards, but looked so proud because he had put it on by himself, so y/n let out a soft "naaw" before lifting her son up and gently tickling his belly, causing him to giggle loudly.Â
"You did great, buddy. But we need to get your jersey on right, okay?" Smiling, y/n sat her son down on the countertop and began to put the Burrow jersey, which he wore almost daily, on him the right way around.
"Who dey think gonna beat dem Bengals? Nobody!" , Mason began to chant after wearing the jersey the right way around and snagging a cracker from the lunchbox y/n had just prepared.
"I hear you're ready to cheer on Daddy and the rest of the team at practice already?"Â Y/n lifted her son up to put him back on the ground, where he gave her a big grin and then clapped his hands enthusiastically and shouted "yes."
Just like Joe, his son shared an enthusiasm for football, so much so that Mason had been talking about nothing else at times since he could talk, and y/n wouldn't be surprised if their son together eventually followed in Joe's footsteps.
"Football with?" , Mason asked y/n as she stowed the lunchbox in Mason's backpack and then tucked her cell phone and front door key into her purse.
"We don't need that one. There are lots of them at Daddy's trainings camp. I'm sure you'll get to play with one." She tousled Mason's hair, which made him giggle.
"Come on, let's go see Daddy."
She picked her son up and carried him into the car, where she put him in his car seat, buckled him in, and moments later left the garage with the car and headed to the training area with Mason to surprise Joe.
â
"Mommy! Mommy! Hurry! "Mason shouted excitedly when they arrived at the training ground and could hear the shouting of the team from far away.
"We're almost there!" y/n smirked slightly as she grabbed Mason's hand and ran over to the field with her excited son, who kept pulling on his mother's hand to show her to hurry.
From a distance, she recognized the team, which was completely engrossed in practicing a few plays, so that y/n and Mason could sneak up unnoticed, although y/n was sure that Mason would betray them sooner or later.
"Daddy?" , Mason tilted his head questioningly as the two arrived at the edge of the field and y/n spread out a blanket on which she and Mason could sit for the next few minutes, keeping Mason occupied every now and then when he wasn't excitedly watching them practice.
"Daddy's over there," , y/n said as she pulled Mason onto her lap and pointed her fingers over to the field where number nine was located.
Wide-eyed, Mason watched his father begin to practice a few throws, at which point Mason kept applauding and began to giggle softly.
With a smile on her lips, y/n watched her son.
"Hello Mason, hello y/n. Good to see you guys." , the suddenly heard Zac's voice next to her, so she lifted her head and smiled at the head coach.
"Hey, Zac. You alright?" Y/n stood up to greet Zac with a quick hug before Zac crouched down and gently tickled Mason's stomach.
"All great and I see you guys are too, right buddy? Are you rooting for your daddy?"
Mason answered Zac with a giggle and then began clapping his hands.
"He couldn't wait to get back here. He actually wears the jersey almost every day." , y/n said rolling his eyes slightly, which made Zac laugh softly.
"That's great, isn't it? That way we're already working on good young talent. Joe said he should play football soon too?"
"No," y/n said quickly, but had to grin.
"I see you haven't agreed yet," Zac replied with a grin, and then picked up Mason, who began to sing The Bengal Song again.
"Shall we go say hi to your daddy and do some exercises with him?"
Zac got a wild nod in response, so the Bengals' boss headed out onto the field with Mason on his arm.
"Listen up guys! I've got a new arrival here!" he shouted across the field, causing everyone to pause in their movement and look to Zac and Mason.
Immediately, the players' expressions brightened and they all began to greet Mason in confusion, causing him to press himself slightly shyly against Zac.
"Look, there's Daddy," he distracted Mason as they came to a stop just before Joe.
He lowered Mason, who moments later spotted Joe and ran toward him, stumbling slightly.
"Hey, Buddy," Joe, who by now had crouched down and spread his arms, greeted his son, who threw himself into his arms.
"Daddy! Daddy!" , his son shouted excitedly and began to tell him that he was wearing Joe's jersey and was eager to play with him.
With a big grin on his lips, Joe pressed a kiss to his son's forehead before picking him up and carrying him over to Logan, Sam and Tee.
"Hey little superstar," Sam greeted the little one and tousled him through his hair, causing Mason to giggle softly.
"Are you training with us today?" , Logan asked Mason, who started nodding vigorously shortly after, making the three of them laugh.
"Let's go then." With a grin on his lips, Tee grabbed the football and thus the four of them began to play a little football with Mason, cheering loudly for Mason every time he threw or caught the ball.
And from the edge of the field, y/n watched them grinning broadly while she held the cell phone in her hand and filmed them all for some time to have some memory of today.
â
"You really need to come back here with Mason" , Logan all but pleaded as he pulled y/n into a tight hug of greeting, then gave her a pleading look as he let her go again.
"Oh, yeah." , Sam agreed with him.
"Please," , Tee was almost pleading.
"I wouldn't mind either" , Joe agreed with his colleagues, after pressing a kiss to y/n's lips. He held the sleeping Mason in his arms, who had fallen asleep after an exciting half hour playing with the boys.
"Don't worry, boys. I'm sure Mason will be begging me to come back here every day now. And he won't stop until he's big enough to be on the field himself."
A big grin formed on the faces of Logan, Sam and Tee and they were satisfied with the answer, so after a short small talk they disappeared into the cabin and left the little family alone.
"That was really a lot of fun. I hope to do this a lot with Mason," Joe enthused. Joe enthused, unaware that y/n had prepared something for Joe and Mason at home, which of course had to do with football.
And who knew if Joe himself would be sitting in the stadium in a few years to watch his own son play and cheer him on.

masterlist
You woke up in the middle of the night, suddenly feeling the urge to throw up. You were nauseous as you stood up, stumbling towards the bathroom.
You breathed heavily, a hand over your face, leaning against the wall. You put the back of your hand onto your forehead, furrowing your eyebrows. You didnât feel hot.
You were confused, and thatâs when the thought popped into your head. You were late, and you felt sick. No way. You originally thought, shaking it away.
Your heart and mind raced with the thought throughout the rest of the day, and it was when you were training with Luke when he noticed. You were off the whole day. He disarmed you, your sword falling to the ground. He smiled, getting ready to tease you when he saw your face.
"You good?" he asked you, smile faltering when he looked back up at you. His expression turned into one of concern as he stared at your features, trying to figure out what was wrong in his head.
"I... have something to tell you."
He furrowed an eyebrow, tilting his head to the side and looking at you in confusion.
"Y/n?"
"Sit down." You told him. Okay, now he was really concerned. He sat down with you on a nearby rock, holding your hand in his to bring comfort.
"Luke... I think I'm pregnant."
His mouth flew open, eyebrows creasing, trying to tell if you were joking or not.
"What? Are you serious?" he asked you with a nervous laugh, gripping your hand a bit tighter.
"I don't know, really, I have to take a test, but I needed you to know."
"What makes you think that your pregnant?"
"I woke up this morning feeling super sick, and I threw up... And I'm a week late!"
He swallowed the lump in his throat, nodding slowly to your words. "We should... take a test, right?"
"Yeah, but where the hell would I even get one? Not too sure that's something they keep in a camp."
"I know they have some in the big house. I can go sneak in and steal one or two." he shrugged.
You furrowed an eyebrow, wondering how he knew that, but ignored it for now. You just nodded, and he grabbed your sword, helping you off the rock. You both walked silently to your cabins.
"I'll get them tonight, and see you tomorrow morning." He told you, both of you standing in front of your cabin.
"Okay." you sighed out. He leaned in, putting his lips on yours. "See you tomorrow," You spoke when he pulled away. He nodded, waiting until you were inside to walk to the Hermes cabin.
He let out a sigh, running a hand over his face, glancing over at the big house and back at his cabin.
He knocked on the window next to your bed, you sat up quicker than the flash, opening it as quickly as you could.
"Jesus, did you even sleep?" he whispered to you, looking around your space. You shook your head. "I couldn't."
"Here." He handed you two boxes. "Thank you." You whispered, going into the bathroom while he sat on your bed, anxiously waiting for you, his leg bouncing up and down while he bit his nail.
It had felt like hours until you came out, holding both tests in front of you, both negative. He let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding in.
"Thank Gods." He muttered, sighing and getting into the bed next to you. You put your head on his chest, wrapping your arms around his figure.
"I don't know, would kids be that bad?" you asked him, looking up at him.
"I mean, I'm not against us having kids in the future. Right now, In camp? Recipe for disaster."
You nodded in agreement, looking back ahead, and shutting your eyes.
"Believe me, soon as we're outta camp, I'll give you all the kids you want." He told you with a smile, kissing the crown of your head while you giggled.

could you write abt a daughter of hecate reader shipped with luke castellan? except that itâs before he turned evil, and itâs very very cutesy - sneaking out at 3am to meet, holding hands under the table, laughing as they spar etc etc. i donât have anything particular in mind, but i would love to see this (also you asked for reqs sooo đĽ°
-đŽ
âÂˇË ŕź * sweet peace
warnings: established relationship, pre tlt so reader stays in hermes cabin pairing: luke castellan x daughter of hecate a/n: I needed to get my mind of all this crazy shit so I decided to finish this up
i. sneaking out
you were woken from your peaceful slumber when a hand shakes your shoulder and your name repeatedly being whispered. you groan into your pillow but the culprit doesnât stop, instead flipping you over on your back. your eyes flutter open to admittedly- your favorite sight. now not so much âfavoriteâ
âwhat do you want, luke?â
he cracks a grin when your eyes open. âI want to go outâ
your brows furrow. âgo out? Itâs the middle of the night!â
âexactly!â
you pout and sit up, facing luke. ânights are for sleeping. Iâm not sure if you knew thatâ
lukeâs grin turns into a smirk. you donât know if you want to kiss him or hit him. âyouâve told me a few timesâ
an angry glare appears on your face. luke laughs
âI am not âgoing outâ in the middle of the night just because you want toâ
âIâll get you a few extra strawberries at breakfastâ
you sigh and throw your hands up dramatically. âokay, fine. let me get a sweatshirtâ
luke holds a hand out for you to take, which you do gratefully. you lean into luke, lips almost touching but you whisper an âI will remember that offerâ before walking away to search for one of your lukeâs sweatshirts
ŕŠâŠâ§âË
you arrive minutes later at your destination: a secluded area near the lake. you recognize this location as the place where you and luke first met. you had just gotten claimed by your mother, upset because she didnât have a cabin for her demigod offsprings. luke found you skipping rocks and sat beside you as you informed him as to why you were in the disappointed mood
he listening attentively as you ranted about the situation and he spoke comforting words to help you overcome your struggles. you were thankful to have him by your side as you were still new to camp. and you later had him confess he was following you like a creep
luke guides you back against a tree, kissing you once almost eagerly before you place a hand to his chest and pull away
âif you dragged me out here just to make out Iâm going to kill you and bury your body under this very ground we stand onâ
âyouâd miss meâ
you shrug. âIâd visit youâ
âthen when I donât respond?â
you frown. âthen maybe Iâd miss youâ
luke smiles and kisses you again. once, and then twice before he pulls back. a soft smile appears on your face at lukeâs look of tenderness. you cup his face and run your thumb over his scar before leaving gentle kisses along it. you feel his face heat up at the action. you pull back and luke takes this moment to bury his face in your neck, arms around your waist, yours around his shoulders
this was definitely better than sleeping
ii. breakfast
although your lack of sleep the previous night was disappointing you couldnât help the bright smile on your face. a plate full of strawberries in front of you, an absolute dream in your eyes. luke watched lovingly as you ate each red berry, not understanding how it was humanly possible for you to eat sixteen of them in under five minutes
âIâm starting to think you like those strawberries more than meâ luke jokes
âmaybe. maybe notâ you shrug
âshould I be worried?â
you purse your lips before biting another berry. âstrawberries are inanimate, therefore they canât kiss me backâ
âwhatâre you saying?â
âIâm saying I would chose you over strawberries. although they do come close to firstâ
âare you saying you love me, moonbeam?â
you sigh. âIâm saying I like kissing youâ
luke frowns. âyou hurt my heartâ
âyou should visit the infirmary then, theyâll fix you right upâ
âI love you tooâ
luke takes your hand underneath the table intertwining them and giving it a gentle squeeze, causing a grin to form on your lips. you run your thumb over his knuckles as a reciprocation
he was definitely better than strawberries

For Her
Joel Miller x female reader Co-written with @absurdthirst
Rating: Mature Word Count: 10k Warnings: Cursing, food, panic attack, references to unplanned pregnancy, past pregnancy, mentions of Sarah, general post-outbreak mood. Summary: Low on supplies and needing rest, Joel and Ellie stop in a colony he has heard about to restock on their journey west, but Joel finds far more than be bargained for within the city walls. Notes: We are so, so excited to debut our first Joel fic! Weâve been looking forward to this for ages and canât wait to explore with the character some more!
There aren't many things that are better now than they used to be. Most comforts are gone and there hasn't been any such thing as safety in twenty years, but Lake Erie is more beautiful than ever and sunrises over the water do have a certain amount of appeal that they lacked before now. You had come here on camping trips with your family as a kid and can't remember it ever being this pretty. Not that sunrise is typically your favourite time of day, but the little bundle wrapped in blankets in your arms seems to love it, and she coos happily now at the rising pinks and oranges in the sky while she wiggles her little fist in the air. Everything is better now that she's here, and you press a kiss to her coffee-brown curls. The rest of the world may be in shambles, but you're going to keep this little bundle safe and sound.
******
Joel's eyes are wary, watchful as he looks around. The rifle in his hand lowered, but still ready to lift and fire, the safety switched off and his finger on the trigger guard. "How much we got?" He demands, peeling his eyes away from the surroundings to glance down at Ellie where she has the supplies scattered out, taking count after a bag had been lost during the last run in with a group of clickers.
"Not much." Ellie frowns at the spread, realizing that the pack they'd lost was the one with most of their food. "We have a couple of days here, at best."
"Shit." Joel hisses, tapping his hand on the guard as he thinks. Trying to decide the best course of action. "Gimme the map." He huffs after a second, holding his hand out so he can look at it.
"Here." Joel's map is marked out in codes and colors that Ellie still hasn't figured out yet, but she's been trying ever since they left Boston. She hands over the map now and starts repacking their supplies. "We just crossed the border into Pennsylvania."
"No shit we crossed the border into Pennsylvania." Joel grumbles at her, aware that the moss covered sign they had passed thirty minutes ago proudly proclaimed them to be inside the boarders of the old state. He shuffles the rifle onto his back and starts studying the map, trying to remember where she had told him there was a colony the last time he left the Boston QZ.
"Cranky." Ellie rolls her eyes as she ties up the drawstring on the bag and shoves it into her backpack.
"Shut up." He grunts, running his finger along the road that the two of them are on. Tracing it up to a small town on the edge of Lake Erie. "Lake City." He taps the map as he remembers her smile as she talked about it, making it seem like it was a haven. "I know a place." He decides, folding the map back up and holding it out to the girl. "They should have supplies."
"A lake?" That perks Ellie up, and thoughts of an actual bath in the fresh water and clean clothes are suddenly at the forefront of her mind. "Fuck it. Let's go."
She hikes her pack up higher on her back and steps past him like she's eager to get there. Making him look after her for a moment before he huffs in amusement and starts to follow. "Hey kid, wait up." He orders, not wanting her to get too far ahead of him.
"You got longer legs than me, old man." She throws the taunt behind her with a smirk, not bothering to turn around and look at Joel. "Catch up."
******
It takes nearly three days to get to Lake City. Joel had to keep the girl in a warehouse for an extra six hours when a group of clickers had come by, huddled down and silent as they wandered through. His finger on the trigger and his body in front of her to protect her if necessary. By the time the tall, cobbled together walls come into view, he can barely see twenty feet in front of his own face. It would have been better to have found a place to bunk down for the night, but the supplies were gone and the girl's stomach had been growling for hours.
The watch lights on the catwalk at the top of the walls outside Lake City aren't exactly anything fancy. There's no FEDRA presence here and therefore no Fireflies. No one waving their gun around or murmuring codes around alley corners. The community of Lake City takes care of itself - self-sufficient and self-supporting in every way they can manage from crops and farming to security and back again. There are two people on the catwalk tonight, carrying two of the only guns in the colony to make sure that no clickers come near the gates. They aren't expecting to see anything, and are chatting between themselves about some gossip or other when one of them stands straight up and points the barrel of his rifle down at the two figures approaching the gate. They don't have the movement patterns of any clickers he's seen, but no one takes chances anymore. "STOP!"
"We're alive!" Joel calls out, lifting one hand up and holding the rifle securely with the other as the two of them slowly approach the light. Squinting at the spotlight that is aimed towards them and he moves his hand to shield his eyes from most of the harsh light.
"I can see that." The voice calls out from the top of the wall. "Put down your gun and stay where you are!" The other figure on top of the wall moves out of sight, presumably to come down and inspect the new arrivals.
"I ain't dropping my gun." Joel calls back, not willing to unarm himself. "Not a chance."
"Hold it out. Finger off the trigger. Stay where you are." The voice from the wall instructs. Down below, the much smaller city door swings open, revealing a smaller figure clad in mismatched armor with a gun directed at the new arrivals. "Stand down." The smaller figure orders from behind their helmet.
Joel holds the rifle out, finger lifted into the air but his eyes are watchful, making sure that no one makes a sudden move. He doesn't trust anyone.
It's not until the figure gets closer that they stop, standing stark still in the open field in front of the gates. They don't speak and Ellie keeps herself from fidgeting. She just keeps her eyes moving between Joel and the person in armor until they nod and turn back to the wall. "Let them in!" The figure calls, without testing or checking or finding out anything.
Your eyes widen when you recognize Joel, grateful for the visor that keeps him from seeing your face and potentially recognizing you as well. Although maybe he wouldn't even remember you, you don't know. It was one night well over a year ago, when you were coming down through what used to be New England and ran into him on the road. The idea of sharing supplies and safety in numbers for one night had ended up with the two of you tearing each otherâs clothes off and spending all your frustrations in passion. A night that has ended up being far more consequential for you than it ever could be for him.
Joel frowns, standing straight and immediately moving towards Ellie. The protective stance easy for anyone to see as he eyes them. It's unusual that anyone would let people into their colony without questions or testing. Even without the FEDRA influence. "Thank you." He nods towards the figure who is seemingly giving the orders. "We're just passin' through. Need supplies."
âWhen was the last time she ate?â Deflecting more than slightly, you nod toward the girl, wondering if sheâs his. If you arenât the first woman that had a night with him and ended up living with the consequences.
"Yesterday." Joel answers, making Ellie cut her eyes up at him.
"She can answer for herself." She blows out and looks back at the figure dressed in tactical gear. "Yesterday." She repeats without a hint of irony.
"Then we'll get you something to eat." You nod back to the gate and start walking, knowing that no one left in the world would be dumb enough not to follow. There's shelter, food, and safety on offer for them inside the colony walls. It's literally what they came here for.
Joel looks at Ellie, nodding towards the figure that is retreating. "Well?" He huffs, "better follow." He readjusts his rifle and starts out after the gear covered leader, frowning slightly as he watches their gait. Something seems familiar about it, although he doubts he will run into you here. You had told him that you were planning on going west.
"This place is weird," Ellie mutters, though she follows at the promise of food. "No test and no interrogation? Weird." Inside the gates, the third member of night watch usually doesn't do much. They're there for support, and to keep the rotation going so the people on top of the wall are always alert. Tonight, though, he looks completely appalled that you're opening the gates for new arrivals. "They need food," you tell him, keeping your helmet and visor in place so no one can see how poorly you're dealing with him appearing out of nowhere. "And someplace to sleep. They'll be gone again in no time."
"Keep your eyes open." Joel watches the person's back warily and cuts his eyes around. "Stick by my side. I don't know what's going on, but I don't trust 'em." If this place is half as lax with security as they seem, it's a wonder that it's still standing. Although it seems a lot cleaner than the FEDRA Boston QZ. Hard to see in the dark, but he imagines it's as picturesque as you had described it.
"Shiiit." On the other side of the gate, Ellie stays at Joel's elbow as they follow the guard through to another room. An empty table and a few chairs standby but not much else, and they stand apart from the furniture when you turn to nod to them. "Someone will bring you food and show you where you can sleep. And they'll lock the gates behind you when you leave tomorrow." You have no expectation that he'll stay here, and even though you had dreamt plenty of times of this man coming to find you - and all the tenderness that that might bring with it - you aren't going to say a word. Not when you have your own secret.
"That's it?" Joel shifts slightly, eyes narrowing as he glances around the room suspiciously. "You're just gonna...let us stay?" His tone is disbelieving and it should be, nothing is free in this world since the Outbreak day. "What's really goin' on here?"
Your head drops a little, and you hate him for being so cautious that he canât just accept the proverbial gift horse heâs being given. âYou want to be turned away? Kicked out for asking questions? Fine.â You point to the door. âGet out.â
Joel doesn't move, just stands there watching. Rocking his jaw for a second before he purses his lips. "Lift your visor." He demands, his gut telling him that he knows why he was just let in. "Show me your face."
You could say no. It would be easy. Two letters. One syllable. But you hesitate. âPut down the gun,â you bargain instead. At the very least you donât want him blowing you away the second heâs confronted with his past.
Instead of putting it down, he takes his finger off the guard, simply holding it by the pistol grip and he lowers it towards the ground in a relaxed position. "As good as it's gonna get." He tells you simply.
It draws another sigh from your lips, but since the Joel you knew was as thorough a son of a bitch in every way as you had ever met, you know he wonât let it go. If you try to retreat heâll just follow you and pull the helmet right off your head. âIâm not looking for trouble,â you tell him honestly, but pull up the visor on your helmet with two fingers anyway.
Joel's slight scowl immediately softens into a mixture of confusion and satisfaction at being right. Your name comes off his lips in a soft whisper as he takes half a step back in surprise. "You'reâ you were supposed to be going west." He mumbles, looking you up and down as if what you were wearing would tell him the story of the last year.
Astonished but quietly glad that he actually remembers you, you shrug your shoulders as nonchalantly as humanly possible and take your helmet clean off. No use hiding now. âCircumstances change.â Motioning to the girl beside him, you try not to look to curious or affected by it at all. If he had a wife that he was stepping out in, you donât want to make waves. âFor you, too.â
"Who, her? Joel points at Ellie and shakes his head. "No, she's cargo." He huffs, not wanting you to believe that this girl is his. "Transporting her." He doesn't want to admit it, but you look good, softer - even with the harsh tactical gear.
âWellâŚIâm sure youâre not aching to rehash old times.â Although now that heâs seen your face, you have to admit that you are. âIâll go get your food.â
"Wait." Joel steps forward almost instinctively, not wanting you to leave right away. He's wondered about you since that night, no matter how he's tried to just forget about it. Wondering if you had gone west like you planned and he wonders what had kept you here.
"Well, that's interesting." Ellie huffs, making him turn around and glare at her.
"Unless you need to go." Joel adds, feeling foolish.
âIâll see if Zach can take over on the catwalk for me.â As much as youâre trying to guard yourself, you do want to talk to him again. Youâve literally dreamt of seeing him. Of a night or day just like this when he would come walking up to the colony gates looking for you. Except he wasnât actually looking for you. Heâs just hungry and transporting some teenager. âSit with you for a little?â
Joel nods, slightly relieved that you aren't just walking away. "Yeah." He rasps out. "That'll be good." You turn around and walk away, leaving him with a smug Ellie, smirking at him like she knows something he doesn't. "What?" He demands harshly, sending her a glare that would make other men piss themselves but she just smirks harder.
âWhoâs your pretty lady friend?â Ellie snickers, enjoying the hell out of Joelâs discomfort. He doesnât show his cards often, but she loves it when he does.
"None of your fuckin' business." He grumbles, relaxing a bit now that he knows you're here. He sets the rifle down and shuffles the back off his back, relishing the relief from the weight. "I don't ask you about your life."
âIt means something,â she argues, taking his relaxation as a signal that itâs safe to plop down in one of the folding chairs at the table that takes up most of the room. âYouâve fucking slept with your finger on the trigger. Now sheâs here and youâre all trusting? Itâs worth asking questions about.â
"It means I've met her before." Joel counters, shucking his jacket and rolling it up to tie to his pack. He wishes he had known you were here. He would have tried - well, there was nothing he could have done if he had known. It wasn't like he was going to pick you flowers and bring them to you like a beau coming to court you. You had one unforgettable night and for all he knows, you've got someone in your life.
âYeah,â Ellie laughs. âFrom old times.â
"Aren't you like 13?" He rolls his eyes and pulls out a chair to sit down, groaning slightly at how good it feels on his back. "A year is old times to you, kiddo." It's shocking sometimes how much she can remind him of Sarah. The sass is a little sharper, but the smart mouth of the teenager has made him snort several times when she wasn't paying attention.
âSo you knew her a year ago?â Ellie has been quick to pick up on his dropped facts, realizing he does it when something scratches at a particular thought or memory.
Joel narrows his eyes at her in warning but she just raises her brow at him. "Last time I was outside the walls." He admits, reaching up and rubbing his jaw with his hand. "She told me about this place."
âSo sheâs why weâre here?â Interesting that Joel actually listened to someone long enough to even absorb what they were saying. Heâs not exactly chatty.
"No." Joel shakes his head, looking around the room. "We're here for the four-star accommodations." He jokes, knowing the girl doesn't have a clue what he is talking about.
âAnd for dinner.â Appearing in the doorway with three bowls of soup, some bread, and glasses of clean water, you carefully balance the tray until you can get close enough to the table to set it down. Luckily youâve been in and out of this room enough times that you know exactly how many steps it takes to get from the door to the table. Six.
Joel leans forward and takes one of the glasses of water but he doesn't touch the soup or the bread. He trusts you, but that's not why he isn't eating. Instead he moves a bowl and a large portion of the food in front of the kid and nods to her. "Eat."
Ellie doesnât have to be told twice, applying herself to the meal thatâs available to her enthusiastically in the hopes that Joel will forget sheâs in the room and talk freely. Gossip is the best she can do for entertainment half the time.
âYou too.â The second bowl of soup and the last of the bread is set down for Joel, and you take the third bowl off the tray for yourself before handing out spoons.
"After the kid eats her share." Joel takes a sip of his water, knowing that he won't eat a bite until she is full. He hadn't eaten yesterday so she could have more. He could do without.
âJoel.â You would roll your eyes but you know what it is to be hungry. âThereâs more in the kitchen. Thereâs plenty. Please, eat.â
He watches you for a moment before he nods, pulling the bowl towards him and immediately starts eating with the same tenacity as the kid.
You have to wonder how long they've been out in the wilds. It's a long way from the Boston QZ and they had said yesterday was their last meal, but you aren't sure it wasn't longer ago than that. Instead of asking questions you just have your own bowl, letting the silence be filled by nothing more than the sound of eating for now.
Joel is a fast eater. Has always been one. Oftentimes swallowing down meals to beat a timed clock to get to work on time, or to have a few minutes to rest before the lunch break was over on a job site. So he's the first one that is pushing the bowl away, not completely satisfied but the hollow ache is gone for now.
"There's more," you remind him, not trying to push but wanting - for your own reasons - for him to be taken care of.
"Maybe in a few minutes." Joel nods his head towards the girl. "Don't want her to throw it all up. Waste of food."
The girl grumbles and makes a face, but doesn't say anything, and you nod for now. "So...you're headed through? On your way from Boston to wherever?" For some reason you just can't bring yourself to ask if he would stay, which is what you really want to know. Even for a single day.
Joel looks at the door and then at Ellie for a moment before he looks back at you. "Got to get the kid to the Fireflies." He tells you quietly. "Just left Pittsburg and had a little trouble there." He admits, the run in on the road making them abandon the car when it crashed into the bookstore.
"Shit." Your shoulders fall a little, finding out that he's been in danger, but you don't reach for his hand like you want to. "Do you need to lay low for a little bit? How much trouble is a little trouble?"
"It wouldn't hurt." Joel acknowledges, knowing that he had pushed the kid hard for the past week, wanting to put as much distance between them and the city. "Be even better if you had a car we could have."
"I can ask around." A few people have pieces they've been cleaning up to sell to travelers exactly like him, but you had sold yours before the baby was born to get formula powder, diapers, and the other necessities that came with raising a child. "There's...there's room at my place but..." When you exhale you shudder slightly, suddenly terrified at having to actually tell him what happened. Never having thought this day would actually come, you hadn't exactly prepared a speech. "There's something you should know first."
Joel tenses immediately, knowing that news is never good. This time he is expecting to hear that you have some man in your life. That you don't need him bringing up the past. "You don't have to worry about it." He tells you immediately. "Won't say anything about it." He doesn't want you to think that will say anything if you hadn't been free to have him touch you like he assumed.
"What?" It takes you a second, but your mind catches up to his defensiveness relatively quickly. "No, no...that's not...that's not it at all. It's actually...kind of the opposite of that." Glancing at the girl he's got with him, you swallow a solid ball of nerves and try not to grimace. "Not sure what you're okay with me saying..."
"Well if it's something to do with where we're stayin' she's gonna find out." He frowns, trying to figure out what the hell has you so flustered. "Might as well tell 'er now."
"That's fair." But it still makes you blow out a slow, anxious breath and look down at your hands in your lap instead of even trying to look him in the eye. "It's just...if either of you has an issue with being around a baby...I'll find you somewhere else to sleep."
"A baby?" Joel's eyes widen and he frowns. "You found a baby out here?"
"Not quite." Found isn't really the word you would use. "I..." Your fingernails bite into your palms, nerves making you close in on yourself. With no idea how Joel will react, you just dive in headfirst. "She's seven months old. A-and her name is Caroline."
It doesn't take long for Joel to put the pieces together. You look like you're about to shit a brick and twisting your hands together nervously. Seven months old plus the eightânine months carrying her. Puts her conception right at the time where he had been outside the walls and met up with you for one night. Joel's chair scrapes the floor as he pushes it back abruptly and turns to stalk out of the room, needing fresh air before he passes out.
"Oh fuck," Ellie murmurs, eyes going wide as she looks between you. Whatever gossip she thought she was going to get, this is way better. "It's not like I could just call you." Immediately ready to defend yourself, you're also ready to collapse inwardly from the anger and hurt on his face. "Show up to a FERPA QZ unauthorized and they hang you, so it's not like I could go to Boston, either." Calling the baby Caroline had been your nod to the city where her father supposedly lived, and she's had Sweet Caroline sung to her as a lullaby every night of her very short life.
Your words stop him from leaving, his back turned to you and he tries to breathe but all he can see Sarah's lifeless eyes, unable to protect her. "I-I needâ to go-out-outside." Joel chokes, out, stumbling for the door.
"Joel!" Turning to follow him right away, you pause only for a second to point a finger at the girl. "Stay here," you tell her firmly before going after the man who has no idea how to navigate the colony he's about to be ambling around blindly.
Joel hits the door, stumbling into the colder night air, stumbling off to the side and bends over as he tries to suck in lungfuls of air and put his head between his knees at the same time. Blind panic taking over as all he can hear is the rapid, panicked breaths of his dying daughter's last breaths, not realizing it's actually his own breathing.
"Joel." Shooting after him, you find him hyperventilating against a tree in the courtyard beyond the gate. This isn't the first time you've ever seen somebody have a panic attack - it's a regular occurrence to a certain extent - but since it's the first time you've ever had to tell a man that you gave birth to his child, you're a little shaken. "Joel, you gotta breathe, okay?" You kneel down beside him and gently put your hands on his shoulders, trying to figure out if touching him will be soothing or just spook him more. "Deep breaths. Long, steady exhales."
"I c-can't â youâ youâ ba-bab-babyâ" Joel closes his eyes and stops breathing at one point before he starts to drop down to his knees in the dirt. Inhaling roughly and sounding like a man starved of oxygen finally getting a breath. Trying not to pass out from the rush of oxygen to his brain and he clenches his fists on his thighs.
"I don't want anything from you." What the hell could you even ask for? Child support? That's fucking laughable in the world you live in now. Dropping to your knees in the dirt next to him, one hand is one his back but you're trying to search his face for some kind of reaction beyond panic. "Caroline and I are as good as anybody can be with the way the world is, okay? You just concentrate on deep, looong breaths."
"I don'tâ I can'tâ" Joel chokes out a sob and his hand wraps around his watch. The last thing he has from his daughter. "Sarah." He manages, trying to steady his breathing.
"Sarah doesn't need to know." Finding out he does have someone waiting for him is a disappointing twist to your gut, but you can't be focusing on yourself right now.
He shakes his head, shoulders slumping down and he takes a moment before he manages to take an even steady breath. "Notâ" He stops himself and reaches for your hand. "She's okay?" He asks. "You're okay?"
"Yeah." You nod and squeeze his hand, wondering what the hell is going through his mind. "Yeah, Joel. We're okay. One of my friends is watching her while I'm on night shift, but we're good. She's...she's my angel."
Joel closes his eyes and absorbs the news that once again - twenty years later - he's a father. He nods, squeezing your hand back before he opens his eyes, more in control of himself than he had been minutes before. "Okay." He rasps out.
"You don't owe us anything, and I'm not asking for anything." He hasn't taken his hand back and you're shamefully glad about it, enjoying the warmth of him again after so long. "You just...you deserve to know she's yours."
He doesn't think that you would lie about something like that. You weren't that type of person. "Iâ Ellieâ" He twists his head around to find the girl outside and staring at him with wide eyes.
"You guys are safe here." Whoever this girl is she's more than just cargo, but you're not going to ask questions. You always got the feeling that Joel was into far more dangerous shit than you could ever stomach, and while that was part of the sex appeal it did also mean you weren't going to stick your nose in his business.
"You shoulda stayed inside." Joel manages to sound like himself when he addresses Ellie but the girl just shrugs.
"But I didn't." She counters back with a smirk. "I wanted to see you freak out over having a baby. Old fart."
"Accidents happen in the world." Shit happens, you know that, and while Caroline was unplanned you wouldn't trade her for the world. "We all process shit differently, Ellie."
"He doesn't." She mutters, some of her joy fading as Joel stumbles to his feet and turns to her.
"Take your time." Your hand on Joel's arm is solid and would be comforting if it weren't for the situation at hand. "I'll take Ellie back inside. Give you...ya know...time to absorb."
"No." Joel shakes his head, the same calm that he normally shows settling back over him. "I'm good." He looks towards Ellie and grimaces. "Can the kid get a bath?" He asks, knowing it's been a while. "Some clean clothes?"
"Yeah, of course." Anything he needs is his, you know yourself well enough to know that you'll give him anything you can without sacrificing what Caroline needs. "A bath, clean clothes, food, place to sleep, whatever. I meant it, you can stay with me as long as you need to."
The invitation to stay shouldn't be appealing, but it is. Right now, Joel just wants to see this daughter of his and get some sleep. He's exhausted and now that his stomach isn't growling, he wants to rest. "Okay."
"Go grab your packs from the room," you urge them both, glad to see Joel looking a little more like himself again. "I'll go check in with Zach and then I'll show you where you're staying."
Joel is quiet as the two of them collect their things, ignoring the obvious looks from Ellie as she tries to catch his eye so she can grill him. He can't do that right now. Meeting you back out front and Joel holds the rifle loosely in his hand. "Lead the way."

The small house you've been living in is one of the lakefront cottages that some rich family once upon a time must have used for vacations. It's a little thing with just enough room for you and Caroline and your friend who drops in a few times a week to look after the baby so you can relax or work your night shift for the security team. A lot of your time is spent with the other mothers in the colony anyway, giving a whole lot of proof to the phrase 'it takes a village'. "This is it." A half mile from the gates, you point out the little house that once had white paint and blue shutters, and now looks exactly like the windswept relic that it is. "Home sweet home."
It's the closest that he's seen to normal since the outbreak. His face relaxing even more, and he gives a small half smile as he looks at it. "You sure you want us in your space?"
"You have more right to it than anyone else." The shrug you offer him is a little lax, but it's the best you can do. "And Ellie here needs a good night's sleep."
"I'd fucking kill for a pillow." Ellie moans, her eyes fluttering in at the idea of it. "Hey." Joel bumps her shoulder and frowns at her.
"No, it's alright." You wave him off, not wanting him to worry about propriety when you pull the front door open. "There's a spare bedroom with a whole bed with blankets and pillows and everything for when my friend stays over." Nothing is exactly high quality, but at least it's there. The glancing look you give Joel, though, is cautious. "I can sleep on the couch so you can have a bed. It's okay."
âIâm not takinâ your bed.â Joel huffs. âIâve slept in worse places than a couch.â Heâs not going to kick you out of your bed, not when youâve got a baby to take care of. âKeep your bed, honey.â
What you really want is to offer to share it, but you're not sure if that would be weird to say in front of the teen. "Kitchen and living room down here, bedrooms and bathroom upstairs." You lead the way into the house with your voice lowered and point down the left side of the hallway. "That's the guest room and the bathroom, Ellie. Knock yourself out. There's a towel in the cupboard after you're done and I'll find something of mine you can wear for pajamas. We'll wash your clothes at the lake tomorrow."
âI get a bed to myself?â Ellieâs eyes are wide and sheâs not too interested in a bath but she knows she will feel better. âFor real?â
"It's not big, but it's all yours." You nod and watch her disappear down the hall at top speed. "She's sweet. Mouth of a sailor, but sweet."
âSheâs a pain in my ass.â Joel corrects you, even as he smirks listening to her squeal of delight and the heavy stomping of her feet since she knows sheâs safe.
"Do you..." Motioning toward your bedroom door lamely, you can hear your friend on the other side murmuring softly. "Do you want to meet your daughter?"
Joel takes a deep breath and after a moment, he nods. Just one short tilt of his head. Exhaling slowly so he doesnât freak out again.
When you open the door two sets of eyes find you immediately. Your friend Emma is confused, obviously, but Caroline's little face lights up and she starts babbling happily the second you appear. "Home early tonight," you explain, offering both girls a smile and reaching for the little bundle in Emma's arms. "How's mama's little angel tonight? Did she wake up wanting snuggles again?"
A baby. Itâs been nearly thirty-five goddamn years since Joel has interacted with a baby. Unable to do anything but watch as a little human, a miniature version of you - thank God - coos and babbles at her mommy. Hands grabbing and an occasional squeal coming out of her tiny, yet forceful, mouth.
"She got a little fussy a half hour ago," Emma tells you. Her eyes never leave Joel, though, regardless of the fact that she's talking to you. "One a.m. like clockwork." Bundling Caroline up in your arms is easy. It's like the most natural thing in the world despite how scared you had been to bring a baby into this insanity of this world around you. "Well, I got news for you, baby girl," you coo at her and bounce her softly in for your arms. "You have somebody extra special to meet." Stepping just barely to the side, you nod to Joel and smile. "Emma, this is Joel." The introduction is simple, but that's because your friend knows exactly who Joel is to you. Why he's so important. "Caroline, baby," you press a kiss to her forehead. "You wanna meet your daddy?"
Joel can't even spare a glance for the girl once he sees the kid. Fear, joy, bone deep sorrow and relief that she looks healthy all bloom in his chest at the same time. Eyes focused on her, absorbing every minute movement as you interact with his daughter. He moves forward, barely an inch, without even realizing it. Leaning in so he can see her better. See the child that he had created with you even though he had pulled out and thought that he had been fast enough. He knows that's not foolproof, and the evidence is right in front of him.
âDo you want to hold her?â Not knowing anything about Joelâs life before the Outbreak, you have no idea if this is the first time heâs held a baby or the millionth. He might hate them for all you know. Some people do, after all.
âNo.â Joel rocks back and shakes his head immediately. âIâmâ Iâm dirty. I shouldnât. Iâve been outside and who knows what Iâve picked up.â The idea of infecting this innocent baby makes his heart pound. âIâ no.â
âOkay.â The panic on his face is unexpected, and surprisingly disappointing, but you nod and continue to bounce Caroline gently. âI-Iâm sorry, I shouldnât haveâŚyou donât have to be her father. I shouldnât have said that.â
âItâs notââ Joel cuts himself off and sighs. âIâve been traveling for weeks. And had toâ the clickersâŚ.â He mumbles, looking down at his filthy hands. âI need to clean up.â
âIâm gonna go.â Emma murmurs, grabbing her sweater from the old rocking chair and eyeing the two of you awkwardly. âCome by tomorrow?â
âYeah.â You nod, reaching to squeeze her shoulder with one hand in silent thanks for everything she does to help you. âThanks, Em.â
Joel listens as she goes down the stairs and out the door. Alone with you after over a year and thereâs this baby in your arms. Taking him back to his early twenties, reminding him of when Sarah was that size. He clears his throat. âIâ can I clean up?â He asks, knowing you might not have clothes for him to wear but it would be good to scrub the filth from his body.
âY-yeah, of course.â You have your own bathroom, attached to your bedroom, and you know for a damn fact that if you hadnât repaired this place yourself when you got to Lake City youâd be sharing it with at least one or two other families. But you put your foot down and you leaned on the pregnancy sympathy and you got it for you. Or really, for Caroline. âThrough that door. Iâm not sure if I have clothes you can wear, but Iâll look.â
âThank you.â With one last look at the baby, Joel strides into the bathroom and closes the door. Amazed that there is a private space for you, that heâs got a baby he helped create. The mirror above the sink is old, the silver coating peeling but he looks into it and wonders when the hell he got so many grays in his hair.
Caroline frowns heavily when Joel disappears from her limited line of sight, and you coo at her quietly while he cleans himself up. âItâs okay, sweet Caroline,â you murmur, cradling her close. âEverythingâs okay. Heâll be right back, baby girl. Donât be sad.â
In the bathroom, Joel strips down, eager to be clean for the first time in who knows how long. The water isnât warm but itâs fresh. Making him groan under the spray and watch as swirls of dirt and filth rush down the drain.
The sound of the shower running only lasts a few minutes, but you knock on the door when heâs done and call his name quietly. âJoel? Iâve got some things that might fit you. Iâll leave them in the bed for you while I get Caroline a snack, ok?â
âThank you.â Joel calls out, stepping out and wrapping a towel around his waist. Itâs the cleanest heâs felt in a long time and the lure of clean clothes is hard to resist.
******
Youâre downstairs with a happily babbling little girl thoroughly enjoying her applesauce when Joel appears in the doorway, dressed in sweats and a t-shirt. He looks like an entirely new man - fresh and clean like he just washed up after work and itâs a completely normal day in a completely normal world. If not for the peeling paint and candlelight, you could almost pretend the Outbreak had never happened. That this is just life with your baby and the man who gave her to you.
"Hey, uh..." Joel frowns slightly, feeling awkward and not wanting to overstep in any way when you have been so kind to him. "I left my clothes in the bathroom. Didn'tâ they need to be washed." He explains, lifting a hand to run it through his squeaky-clean hair.
âIâll take them to the lake tomorrow when I do Ellieâs.â You offer, assuming theyâve been traveling hard and will need to rest. Joel isnât a gentle kind of guy.
"I can wash our clothes." Joel tells you. "You don't need to add more to your plate for us. You already have enough." His eyes turn back towards the baby and he is still startled by the large dark eyes watching him. Reminding him again of Sarah as a baby.
âThen weâll go together.â Thatâs fine with you, itâs an excuse to spend more time with him. âThis one keeps things plenty messy.â You grin and blow Caroline a kiss. âDonât you, sweetie?â
Joel nods and licks his lips slightly as he watches the girl react to it. Waving her hands and grinning at her mother. She's getting sleepy, her eyes starting to drift closed before she wakes herself up and waves her arms around with a squeal. It makes Joel smile, just a tiny one, but he does.
âLooks like itâs bedtime.â There arenât baby monitors or fancy cell phones to use as video equipment anymore, but you have Carolineâs bassinet set up in the corner of your bedroom and thatâs all you need, putting her in her basket-turned-carrier anytime you leave the house together. âIf youâre tired, we can talk tomorrow?â There hadnât been much talking with Joel a year ago. It was fast and needy and amazing, but it certainly wasnât romantic dinners or dates strolling through the park philosophizing about life. Wanting to know him now is just because of Caroline, you tell yourself, even though you know thatâs a lie. You hadnât ever stopped thinking about this man. âIf you want, I mean.â
He wants to talk to you but he's also knows that you need to sleep and so does the baby. "Yeah." He nods, shuffling slightly. "We can talk in the morning. Go put the baby to bed and get some rest." He suggests, not hearing Ellie upstairs and he knows she's probably passed out.
âSure.â You nod, hoisting Caroline up in your arms and picking up the hat of applesauce to put it back in the barely functioning refrigerator. âJust, umâŚâ A smile cracks your tired face when you look at him, you just canât help it. âItâs good to see you, Joel.â
"It's good to see you too, honey." He remembers calling you that during that one night. It wasn't like he didn't remember every single second of that night after he had left you. He isn't in love with you, that would be foolish, but you had stayed in his mind and now he's seeing you again.
âThereâs blankets and extra pillows on the couch.â You want so badly to have just the casual intimacy that would allow you to kiss his cheek, but that night was a long time ago and things are different now. Or at least you tell yourself that they are, because it makes you behave yourself. âGood night.â You turn for the stairs, gently patting Carolineâs back as you go, wanting her to settle in and sleep through as much of the night as possible. You donât know if youâll sleep, with Joel so near, but she should be able to have wonderful dreams.
******
Joel, when he's not popped any pills, is a light sleeper. Not sure when it is, but the sun is still down, jerking awake and listening for a moment for what had pulled him out of restless dreams of Sarah when she was a baby. Then he hears it again. A small cry. Not loud enough to really upset the household but the first unhappy sounds of a baby. Grunting, Joel rolls off the couch and stands. Starting to slowly make his way up the stairs. Expecting to hear your voice as he goes, but he still just hears the kid. Until he pushes the cracked door open and sees the small light, the baby moving in her bed in a corner and Joel looks over to see you sprawled out, still asleep. Another small grunt makes his head snap back towards the cradle and he moves towards it slowly.
She looks up at him with curiosity - not scared of him or disliking the look of him, apparently - just upset that in this exact moment there is no one holding her. Whatever the reason, whether it was a bad dream or an upset stomach or general discomfort, little Caroline reaches up her arms to ask to be held as another small cry escapes her trembling lips.
He doesn't hesitate more than a second, watching her as he reaches down and picks up the small girl. Instantly flashing back to when he routinely carried around another baby. He cradles his daughter in his arms and cuddles her close. "Hey baby girl." He croons softly, not wanting to wake you up but happy that she isn't crying now that he's holding her.
Itâs sometime after that, that the nightmare starts. Youâre oblivious to the world while you sleep heavily in your bed, and the nightmares come out of nowhere. Memories of the Outbreak mix with Carolineâs birth, with terrifying thoughts of losing her or seeing her turned as a child or even a full grown woman. Fear of infection grows in you exactly like the fungus the whole world has grown to fear, and you wake up in a panic that has you covered in sweat. Only to see Joel sitting in the rocking chair under the window with Caroline against his chest like nothing in the world has ever gone wrong in the first place.
"You woulda liked her." His hand is firm on her back, the warmth from her little body against his skin keeps him grounded. "Or she woulda loved you. She woulda fussed and cooed over you like you were the most precious thing." He thinks Caroline likes the rumble of his voice, the vibration from his chest. "She always wanted to be a big sister."
âWhaâwhat?â You can hear Joel talking but canât quite make it out. Digging your way out of the mire of nightmares is like slogging through mud. âIs everything okay?â
Joel startles slightly, not enough to disturb Caroline, but he turns his head towards you. "I didn't wake you, did I?" He asks, frowning slightly at the thought. "Didn't mean to."
"No." Wiping one hand down your face, you shift to sit up in bed and get a better look at Caroline in his arms. "No, I, um...nightmare." You shrug one shoulder lamely.
"I was tryin' to let you sleep." Joel looks back down at Caroline and then back at you. "She got a little fussy but she was good as soon as I picked her up."
"I don't normally sleep so deeply." Damn nightmares kept you from hearing Caroline, which you hate, and you scrub both palms down your face in dismay. "I'm sorry she woke you up."
"Don't worry about that." Joel can't help but lean his head over, running his nose over her soft head and down her cheek. "I was just talkin' to her. Tellin' her about things."
"What kind of things?" Instantly you wish he was sitting on the couch or in bed with you so you could cuddle up together. A domestic thought that makes you wish you were a family.
Joel rubs her back gently when she squeals and then settles back down against his shoulder, chuckling softly. âI was tellinâ her aboutâŚSarah.â
"Who is Sarah?" He had said the name earlier, but you weren't about to interrogate him in the middle of a panic attack.
He closes his eyes and nuzzles the baby again, remembering how soft and sweet they could smell when they are clean and sleepy. âSheâŚshe was my daughter.â
You don't miss the was in the sentence, and you suck in a cautious breath. "I'm sorry." Now that you have Caroline, you can't imagine the pain of losing her. No wonder he panicked when you told him he had another.
âIt was a long time ago.â Joel mutters softly, his eyes opening and finding yours, seeing the sorrow in them. âShe woulda been 32, laughing her ass off at her old man finally givinâ her the sister she asked for for Christmas every year.â
Before the Outbreak. You swallow, nodding as you absorb this new information. âIf she was anything like you, sheâd rib you mercilessly.â What little you do know of him, Joel teases as a sign of affection.
âEndlessly.â Joel knows what itâs like being a single parent, he hasnât forgotten. âHer motherâŚleft us when Sarah was three months old.â He decides he owes you this, you are connected with him in a way that fundamentally changes things. âI raised her, she had a...a way that just made me marvel at how smart she was. Quick witted.â His foot pushes off the floor and rocks the chair gently. âUntilâŚ.â
âYou donât have to tell me if Iâm you donât want to.â If it will hurt you. The last thing you want is to hurt him in any way. Not whenâŚwhen you feel about him like you do, and when heâs given you something as incredible as Caroline.
The baby squirms, capturing his attention for a moment and he rubs her back soothingly. âItâs okay. Sheâ the day it happened â âOutbreak Dayâ â it was my birthday.â
âShit.â Shifting forward in your bed, you instinctively reach out to touch his knee. âIâm so sorry.â
âYou know how it was.â Joel grunts. âChaos. A plans crashed and the truck we were in flipped.â He can see it, plain as day. âHer ankle was hurt so I carried her and the Armyâ theyââ He closes his eyes and squeezes them tight. âThey shot us.â
âAssumed infected.â You sigh, looking down at your hand on his knee before realizing itâs probably an overstep and recoiling. âThe Army took at least one person from all of us. People who could have survived. Who were fine.â
âThey killed a twelve-year-old girl.â Joel hisses. âMy baby girl.â
âAnd they killed my seventeen-year-old sister.â Heâs not the only one who lost someone, but itâs obvious that his loss is still as fresh as the day Sarah was shot. âI-Iâm sorry, Joel. I am.â
âIâm sorry about your loss.â He rumbles out softly. âWeâve all lost people.â
âWe have.â You can agree to that without hesitation. âButâŚwe also gained someone. Tiny and fussy and sheâs got the best laugh in the whole world. Iâm justâŚIâm glad you got to meet her.â
âIâm sorry.â Joel shakes his head, even as he cuddles her closer. âI didnât mean to â I shoulda pulled out sooner, I guess.â He knows that he could have gotten you pregnant from precum but he still feels guilty.
âI appreciate that, butâŚnow thatâs sheâs here? I wouldnât trade her for the world.â The times of being angry with him for what happened are far behind you at this point. You knew the risk you were taking having unprotected sex - you had just wanted Joel too desperately to care.
âI never expected to see you again.â He admits quietly. âThought you would be out west somewhere. Thought about it some.â
âYou thought about me?â You probably sound more surprised than you should, considering how often you think about him, but you had assumed he would have forgotten about you fairly quickly. He had nothing like your reason to remember.
âWhy wouldnât I?â Joel frowns slightly and tilts his head at you. âThought we had a good night. ConversationâŚwhat happened after.â He smirks slightly.
âI thought we had a fantastic night.â And you hadnât wanted to let yourself be overly sentimental in dreaming that he might still think about you sometimes. âI just didnât know what you were going back to, so I kind ofâŚdidnât want to let myself get sentimental, ya know?â
Joel snorts and shakes his head. âSome things you just donât do.â He murmurs. âEnd of the world or not.â He and Tess hadnât been exclusive, hell â she hadnât even really been in his bed for a month before he had met you. Not that it matters now.
"Doesn't mean you couldn't have met somebody else since." There had been a million different ways that you had talked yourself out of getting maudlin over his memory or overly attached to fantasies of him, and you shrug a little while you watch him rock your now sleeping baby. "It was easier not to let myself dream about you."
âNaw⌠nothingââ He clears his throat. âNothing that actually matters now.â
"I'm not expecting you to drop everything because of her." That's not something you would have asked of him even in the time before, and you're certainly not going to ask it of him now. The world has changed, even if people are fundamentally the same. "But we won't say no to visits now and then if you're still traveling."
Heâs quiet for a minute, stewing as he contemplates what to do. âIâve got to go.â He admits after a long moment. âGet the girl to the Fireflies.â
"Yeah, you said." It hurts more than you want to admit, because you want him to drop everything and stay with you. To be with you and Caroline. It's such a juvenile fantasy in some ways, but the way you've felt about Joel for the last almost year and a half is undeniable. "But like I said...if you ever came back this way...we would be glad to see you."
He can hear it in your voice, twisting his head so that he can look at you. âSheâs important.â He tells you quietly, hoping that he can trust you. âSpecial.â He adds meaningfully.
âShe seems like a good kid.â A little foul-mouthed maybe, but you had been too, at her age. And that was without the world collapsed around you. âI just want you to know youâre welcome here, thatâs all. Caroline isâŚsheâs your blood. And if you want to know her, you should be able to.â
He should be grateful that you are telling him that. That he can live his life and not worry about the baby heâs fathered. But it irritates him. âYou arenât goinâ west anymore? You could.â
âI canât protect her on my own.â Itâs something that you struggled with. The change to your plans to go west and find what remained of your family had been abandoned when you figured out that your sickness was pregnancy and not any of the thousand other things it could be. âI stayed and worked on the house so she could be safe. I have no business going west anymore.â As much as it hurts you, you really canât. Caroline instantly became and will always be your first priority. âNot until sheâs older, anyway. A lot older. And by then who knows what will have happened.â
âIâve got to get to Jackson. My brother Tommy, heâs missingâ and thatâs where he was last.â Joel shuffles Caroline so that sheâs cradled in the curve of his arm.
âWyoming?â He said west, not south, so itâs an informed guess. And an ironic coincidence, if itâs true. âIâŚI used to have people out there. I donât know if theyâre still there or still alive, but they were in Jackson last I heard.â
Joel nods, confirming he meant Wyoming. The idea of traveling with a baby isnât a pleasant one. It makes things hundreds of times more complicated, but he also knows that he doesnât want to leave the two of you, wondering what would happen to you.
âCould I send a letter with you, maybe?â Just being able to tell your surviving family that youâre okay - safe and with a baby - would be such a relief. âIf you donât run into them or canât find them, thatâs fine. But just in case?â
Joel is quiet for a long minute, mulling over everything. âIf we had a car, we could go. All of us.â Joel murmurs quietly, unsure of your willingness to travel with Caroline.
âYou want us to go with you?â It honestly wasnât something you had expected. If anything, you would have been ecstatic to have him come back to you when everything was over.
âOnly if you think you can handle it.â Joel tells you quickly. âItâs not going to be stroll. Itâll be dangerous. And the baby will need to be protected.â
âIâve been out there before,â you remind him. Itâs how you met, after all. Or at least itâs where you met. Out in the wilds. âItâs how I know I canât do it alone. But two of us? ThatâsâŚthatâs different.â
Joel looks at you, âhow much can we get?â He asks, wanting to know about supplies. A car, horses, whatever could be had here.
âA lot of people want this house.â A safe place to live is invaluable, and this one has the benefit of the small garden Emma helped you start. âIâve got good food stores and medical supplies. Clothes, soap, a knife and an axe.â You had built up this house to be where you raised your daughter, so you had stocked up supplies, too. âWe could trade the house for a car and whatever else we need.â
âIf youâre wantinâ to stay here, I wonât blame you.â Joel strokes the babyâs face gently and smiles when she reaches up and grabs his finger while she sleeps. âItâs a nice life you have here and it â itâll be hard out there.â
âThis is as good a life as we can hope for anymore.â Thatâs true, and it makes a part of you ache that you actually arenât very happy here. You have everything you need, Caroline is safe, and thereâs less violence than in a lot of other places - but you feel isolated regardless. Even the friends youâve made feel like placeholders compared to your family. âBut I really donât know.â Is it worth giving up security for happiness? How will you know which will make Caroline happier?
âIf you want to go, Iâll get you there.â Joel promises you, serious about that. He will do anything to protect you and the baby. Ellie too. âI promise.â
âI miss my family.â It comes out small, more ashamed than youâd like, as you watch Joel cradle your daughter in his arm. âI think Iâd give anything to have my family back. Anything but Caroline.â
âNothing wrong with missing family, baby.â Joel hums quietly, thinking about TommyâŚ.and Sarah. âSometime the only reason to go on if for people we care about.â
âDo you keep going for Tommy?â Itâs an intensely personal question, but the connection you share with him now just as intensely personal as you could have with another person.
âI did.â Joel admits, his brother the most important person in the world to him until recently. Or tonight.
âDid?â You ask, your eyebrows knitting together, wondering why heâs talking like his brother is dead when he just said he was going to find him.
âDid.â Joel murmurs softly, leaning down and pressing his lips to Carolineâs forehead. âNow Iâll keep going for her.â He tells you, looking up when he pulls away from his daughter.
