And to tie in the linked video; there is almost a loss of criticism (for the lack of better words) when it comes to criticising books in some spaces, but as much as people say 'let people enjoy things' exists, its counter part of 'let people hate/critique things' should also exist)

Mastering the Art of Keyword Optimization
The Importance of Relevant Keywords
In the realm of Shutterstock, the right keywords are your beacon, guiding potential buyers to your work amidst a sea of imagery. Selecting relevant keywords is not just about matching search terms; it's about understanding the intent and context behind those searches. Your choice of keywords should reflect the subject matter, emotion, and even the potential uses of your photos.
Consider the following steps to enhance your keyword strategy:
Research keywords using tools like Semrush, Alura, or eRank.
Incorporate descriptive tags, color labels, and orientation details.
Regularly analyze trends to ensure your keywords remain effective.
By meticulously tagging each photo with well-researched keywords, you not only increase its visibility but also its chances of being the exact match for a customer's needs. Remember, specificity is your ally in the vast digital marketplace of Shutterstock.
It's crucial to keep your keywords focused and relevant. While it may be tempting to include a plethora of tags, quality trumps quantity. A well-optimized image with a handful of precise keywords can perform better than one with a scattergun approach to tagging. Stay informed, stay relevant, and watch as your photos find their audience with ease.
Tools and Techniques for Effective Tagging
To excel on Shutterstock, mastering the art of keyword optimization is crucial. Shutterstock Keywording Tips suggest that you should exploit every feature available for describing your photo. This includes not only tags but also descriptors like color labels, orientation, and location. By meticulously tagging each image, you enhance its visibility, thereby increasing the likelihood of a sale.
Consider the following list to ensure your tags are as effective as possible:
Utilize keyword research tools such as Semrush, Alura, or eRank to identify high-impact keywords.
Incorporate up to 13 tags to improve your search ranking on Shutterstock.
Regularly update your tags to reflect trending topics and search terms.
Remember, your goal is to make your content easily discoverable. Effective tagging leads to better searchability, which in turn can lead to more sales. Keep your tags relevant and updated to mirror the ever-changing market demands.
Finally, don't overlook the power of external marketing strategies. Utilize social media, email marketing, and SEO on your personal website to drive additional traffic to your Shutterstock portfolio. By combining these tools and techniques with consistent performance monitoring, you can fine-tune your approach and stay ahead in the competitive world of online photo sales.
Analyzing Trends to Stay Ahead
In the dynamic world of stock photography, keeping your finger on the pulse of market trends is not just beneficial; it's essential. By analyzing what subjects and styles are gaining traction, you can adapt your portfolio to meet the evolving demands of buyers. This proactive approach ensures your offerings remain fresh and relevant, increasing your chances of sales.
To truly excel, you must not only follow trends but also anticipate them. This foresight can give you a competitive edge, allowing you to create and upload content just as the demand begins to surge.
Understanding the ebb and flow of consumer interest can seem daunting, but it's a skill that can be honed with practice and the right tools. Here's a simple strategy to get started:
Regularly visit Shutterstock's blog and insights sections.
Monitor social media and online forums for emerging visual themes.
Analyze your own sales data to discern patterns.
Keep an eye on global events that may influence visual content needs.
By integrating trend analysis into your routine, you'll not only stay ahead of the curve but also position yourself as a go-to source for buyers seeking the latest in visual content.

Understanding Shutterstock's Earnings Structure
Decoding Royalty Tiers and Rates

Each image becomes an opportunity to catch a buyer's eye and increase Shutterstock sales. Focus on building a substantial, varied portfolio that keeps buyers returning for more.
Regularly analyze your sales data to identify what sells best.
Continuously add new content to keep your portfolio fresh and engaging.
Aim for a balance between quantity and quality to maintain credibility.

The Importance of Diversity in Nonprofit Executive Search: Strategies for Attracting a Wide Range of Candidates to Your Leadership Team
In today’s rapidly changing world, the significance of diversity in nonprofit executive search cannot be overstated. Nonprofit organizations serve diverse communities, and their leadership teams should reflect this diversity to ensure that they understand and can effectively address the needs of those they serve. Nonprofit executive search practices are evolving to prioritize inclusive recruitment strategies, allowing organizations to attract a wider range of candidates. By embracing diversity in leadership, nonprofits can enhance their decision-making processes, increase creativity, and ultimately improve their impact in the communities they serve. As nonprofit executive search becomes more strategic, organizations must implement innovative practices to attract diverse candidates who can lead them toward their mission.
Nonprofit executive search firms play a crucial role in shaping the leadership landscape within the nonprofit sector. These firms recognize that a diverse leadership team not only brings different perspectives but also fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration. When organizations prioritize diversity in their nonprofit executive search efforts, they signal to potential candidates that they value inclusion and understand its importance in driving social change. This is particularly vital as nonprofits work to dismantle systemic barriers and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities. By committing to diversity, nonprofits can enhance their credibility and appeal to a broader range of stakeholders, from donors to volunteers and community members.
Understanding the Benefits of Diversity in Leadership
The benefits of diversity in leadership extend beyond mere representation. Research has consistently shown that diverse teams outperform their homogeneous counterparts. In the context of nonprofit executive search, this means that organizations with diverse leadership are more likely to innovate and solve complex problems. By incorporating diverse viewpoints, nonprofits can better anticipate challenges and respond to the needs of the communities they serve. Nonprofit executive search firms that focus on diversity help organizations build teams that can think critically and creatively, leading to more effective strategies and solutions.
Moreover, diverse leadership teams are better equipped to engage with a variety of stakeholders. Nonprofits often rely on community support, and having leaders from different backgrounds can enhance their ability to connect with various audiences. These leaders can draw on their unique experiences to foster trust and understanding, ultimately leading to stronger partnerships and community engagement. For nonprofit organizations looking to expand their reach and deepen their impact, incorporating diversity into their nonprofit executive search processes is essential.
Strategies for Attracting Diverse Candidates in Nonprofit Executive Search
To successfully attract a wide range of candidates through nonprofit executive search, organizations must adopt specific strategies. One effective approach is to expand the channels through which job openings are advertised. Traditional recruitment methods may not reach all potential candidates, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. By utilizing diverse job boards, community organizations, and social media platforms, nonprofits can ensure their job postings are seen by a broader audience. Collaborating with organizations that focus on promoting diversity in leadership can also help nonprofits tap into networks that are rich in diverse talent.
Additionally, nonprofit executive search firms should consider the language used in job descriptions. The phrasing of job postings can significantly impact who applies. Research indicates that certain words may deter candidates from diverse backgrounds from applying. To create an inclusive environment, nonprofit executive search firms must craft job descriptions that emphasize the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. By clearly articulating the value placed on diverse perspectives, nonprofits can encourage candidates from various backgrounds to submit their applications.
Implementing Inclusive Interview Processes
Beyond recruitment, nonprofit executive search firms must focus on creating inclusive interview processes that eliminate bias. This can involve training hiring committees on unconscious bias, ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented in the interview process, and using standardized evaluation criteria to assess candidates. By implementing these strategies, organizations can create a fairer selection process that values diverse experiences and qualifications.
Furthermore, organizations should consider involving community members in the interview process. This not only enhances the sense of transparency but also signals to candidates that the organization values community input. Including diverse voices in decision-making can lead to a more equitable selection process and ensure that the leadership team is well-equipped to serve the community’s needs effectively.
Fostering an Inclusive Organizational Culture
Attracting diverse candidates through nonprofit executive search is only the first step; fostering an inclusive organizational culture is equally important. Organizations must create environments where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. This can be achieved through mentorship programs, employee resource groups, and ongoing diversity training. Nonprofit executive search firms can assist in developing these initiatives, ensuring that diversity is not merely a goal but a core value embedded in the organization’s operations.
Moreover, nonprofits should regularly assess their diversity and inclusion efforts to identify areas for improvement. By collecting feedback from employees and stakeholders, organizations can make informed decisions about their recruitment and retention strategies. This commitment to continuous improvement will not only enhance the organization’s internal culture but also bolster its external reputation, making it more attractive to diverse candidates during future nonprofit executive search processes.
Conclusion: The Future of Diversity in Nonprofit Executive Search
As nonprofits face increasingly complex challenges, the importance of diversity in nonprofit executive search will only continue to grow. By prioritizing inclusive recruitment practices and fostering diverse leadership teams, organizations can better navigate the evolving landscape of social impact. Nonprofit executive search firms play a pivotal role in this transformation, helping organizations attract the diverse talent needed to achieve their missions effectively. In embracing diversity, nonprofits not only enhance their own effectiveness but also demonstrate their commitment to building a more equitable society for all.

The Importance of Contributing to Health Blogs Through Guest Posting
Why Guest Posting Matters in the Health Niche
Guest posting has long been recognized as one of the most effective ways to build authority and share knowledge. It’s a strategy that benefits both the blog owner and the guest author. When you submit a guest post to a health blog, you not only gain access to a broader audience but also help in sharing vital information that could positively impact readers' lives.
Health blogs, by nature, are platforms that consistently attract visitors looking for trustworthy advice. By contributing a well-written article on a topic you're knowledgeable about, you position yourself as an expert in the field. In turn, this can lead to greater credibility and visibility in the health and wellness community. Additionally, guest posts often include a short author bio, which allows you to link back to your personal blog, website, or social media, further enhancing your online presence.
Another significant benefit of guest posting is the SEO advantage. Search engines prioritize websites with quality content and backlinks from credible sources. When you submit guest post health blog, it helps your website rank higher in search engine results due to the backlinks you generate. Over time, this can lead to increased traffic to your own website or blog, allowing you to connect with more people interested in the topics you cover.
How to Create Value with Your Guest Post
When contributing to a health blog, it's essential to ensure that your content is informative, well-researched, and relevant to the blog's audience. Readers come to health blogs looking for clear, actionable advice. Therefore, your guest post should provide unique insights or a fresh perspective on health topics. Whether it’s a new trend in fitness, a breakthrough in mental health treatments, or lesser-known nutritional advice, your post should offer something valuable to the reader.
Before you submit a guest post to a health blog, spend time researching the blog’s existing content. This will give you an idea of the tone, style, and topics that resonate with its audience. Ensure your post fits seamlessly with the blog's existing content while bringing something new to the table. Most blog owners prefer content that is original and not found elsewhere, so avoid the temptation to submit a previously published article.
Additionally, it’s essential to understand the submission guidelines of the blog you’re contributing to. Different blogs have different requirements in terms of word count, formatting, and even preferred topics. Following these guidelines is critical to increasing the chances that your submission will be accepted and published.
Building Relationships Through Guest Posts
Contributing a guest post health is more than just an opportunity to share your knowledge—it's also a chance to build relationships within the health blogging community. Engaging with other authors, interacting with readers in the comments section, and sharing your guest post on social media can help you connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about health and wellness.
When you consistently submit guest posts on health blogs, you develop a reputation as a reliable contributor. This opens up more opportunities for collaboration, whether through guest posting on other prominent blogs or even being invited to participate in interviews, podcasts, or webinars within the health niche.
Conclusion
Guest posting is a highly effective way to build your authority in the health and wellness industry. When you submit a guest post to a health blog, you not only share valuable insights but also enhance your online presence, connect with a broader audience, and foster relationships within the community. So, if you have expertise to offer, don’t hesitate to submit a guest post to a health blog and make a lasting impact on readers seeking reliable health information.

The allure of “best” is undeniable, but when it comes to news, the label can be misleading. “Best viral news” and “best world business news” represent two distinct landscapes, each requiring a nuanced approach to navigate effectively. This article explores how to decipher viral content while gaining insightful perspectives on global business trends.
Demystifying Viral Trends: Separating Buzz from Substance
Understanding the “Why”: Don’t be fooled by catchy headlines. Look beyond the initial sensation and analyze the underlying causes and potential societal implications of the viral news.
Fact-Checking is Paramount: Verify information with reputable sources like established news outlets or fact-checking organizations. Don’t rely solely on social media posts and unreliable websites.
Prioritizing Context: Seek out in-depth reporting that contextualizes the viral news within broader social, economic, or cultural trends. This provides a deeper understanding of the phenomenon.
Beware of Manipulation: Be cautious of content that appears designed to evoke strong emotions or manipulate opinions. Consider the potential biases of the source and its agenda.
Promoting Open Dialogue: Use viral news as a catalyst for constructive discussions, critical thinking, and engagement with diverse viewpoints.
Example: A viral video highlighting food waste should prompt conversations about sustainability practices and potential solutions to food insecurity, not just short-term outrage.
Unveiling Global Business Insights: Beyond Breaking News
Seeking Diverse Perspectives: Go beyond the headlines and prioritize news outlets providing analyses from economists, industry experts, and individuals across different regions.
Understanding Interconnectedness: Analyze global events and policies for their potential impact on businesses, considering factors like supply chains, trade agreements, and economic fluctuations.
Long-Term Vision: Focus on trends that will affect businesses in the long run, rather than just fleeting market movements or short-term gains.
Data-Driven Decisions: Seek news that uses reliable data and statistics to support its analysis, allowing businesses to make informed decisions based on evidence.
Connecting with the Human Story: While data is crucial, prioritize reporting that explores the human impact of business decisions on workers, consumers, and communities.
Example: An analysis of a new environmental regulation shouldn’t just focus on its immediate impact on companies. It should also explore the long-term benefits for sustainability and potential solutions for businesses to adapt.
Remember: Both viral news and world business news hold immense power. By avoiding the “best” label and prioritizing critical analysis, reliable sources, and diverse perspectives, we can navigate them effectively. Viral news can spark dialogues about pressing issues, while insightful business news informs strategies for a more sustainable and equitable future.

The Road to Success: Elements Musicians Must Consider When Setting Goals
The journey to musical success is paved with well-defined goals and strategic planning. This article delves into the critical elements that musicians need to consider when setting their goals, ensuring they stay on the path to achieving their dreams. By focusing on these elements, you can create a structured and actionable plan that will guide you towards your musical aspirations.
1. Understanding Your Vision:
Reflecting on Your Career Aspirations:
Your vision is the ultimate destination you want to reach in your music career. Reflect on what you want to achieve in the next 5, 10, or even 20 years. Do you see yourself as a renowned performer, a sought-after composer, or a successful recording artist?
Write a vision statement that encapsulates your long-term aspirations. This statement will serve as a motivational guide and a benchmark for your goal-setting process.
Ensuring Alignment with Personal and Professional Goals:
Your musical goals should align with both your personal values and professional aspirations. Consider how your goals will impact your personal life, relationships, and overall well-being.
Balance your musical ambitions with personal growth and satisfaction to ensure a fulfilling and sustainable career.
2. SMART Goal Setting:
Specific:
Define clear and precise goals. Vague goals like "I want to improve as a musician" should be replaced with specific objectives such as "I want to master jazz piano techniques within the next six months."
Specific goals provide a clear direction and focus for your efforts.
Measurable:
Establish criteria for measuring progress. For instance, if your goal is to increase your online presence, specify a target like "I want to gain 10,000 new followers on social media within a year."
Measurable goals allow you to track your progress and stay motivated.
Achievable:
Set realistic and attainable goals based on your current skills, resources, and time availability. While it's important to challenge yourself, setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration and burnout.
Achievable goals build confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment as you progress.
Relevant:
Ensure your goals are relevant to your overall vision and purpose. Ask yourself if achieving a particular goal will bring you closer to your long-term aspirations.
Relevant goals keep you focused on what truly matters and prevent you from getting sidetracked.
Time-bound:
Set deadlines for your goals. A timeline creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused. For example, "I will release my debut album by the end of the year."
Time-bound goals provide a clear end date, which helps in planning and prioritizing tasks.
3. Self-Assessment:
Conducting a Thorough Self-Evaluation:
Assess your current skills, strengths, and areas for improvement. Identify your musical abilities, stage presence, and technical skills.
Seek feedback from mentors, peers, and industry professionals to gain an objective perspective on your strengths and weaknesses.
Identifying Gaps and Opportunities:
Identify the gaps between your current skills and the skills needed to achieve your goals. Create a plan to bridge these gaps through practice, training, and learning.
Look for opportunities to enhance your skills, such as workshops, masterclasses, and collaborations.
4. Creating a Roadmap:
Developing a Detailed Action Plan:
Create a comprehensive action plan that outlines each step needed to achieve your goals. Include specific actions, timelines, and required resources.
An action plan provides a clear roadmap and helps you stay organized and focused.
Setting Milestones and Checkpoints:
Break down your long-term goals into smaller milestones and checkpoints. These intermediate goals provide motivation and a sense of progress as you work towards your larger objectives.
Regularly review your milestones to assess your progress and make necessary adjustments.
5. Networking and Collaboration:
Building a Strong Network:
Networking is crucial in the music industry. Build relationships with other musicians, producers, and industry professionals. These connections can provide valuable opportunities, advice, and support.
Attend industry events, join music organizations, and participate in online communities to expand your network.
Collaborating with Others:
Collaboration can open new doors and provide fresh perspectives. Work with other musicians, producers, and creatives to enhance your skills and expand your reach.
Collaborative projects can lead to innovative ideas and unique opportunities that align with your goals.
6. Feedback Mechanisms:
Seeking Regular Feedback:
Regularly seek feedback on your music and progress. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and refine your approach.
Create a feedback loop by consistently sharing your work with mentors, peers, and your audience.
Using Feedback to Refine Goals:
Use the feedback you receive to make necessary adjustments and improvements. This iterative process ensures continuous growth and development.
Be open to constructive criticism and view it as an opportunity for growth.
7. Resource Management:
Identifying and Allocating Resources:
Determine the resources you need to achieve your goals, including time, money, equipment, and support from others. Create a list of resources and prioritize them based on importance and availability.
Develop a budget and timeline to manage your resources effectively.
Creating a Budget and Timeline:
A well-planned budget ensures you have the necessary financial resources to achieve your goals. Allocate funds for recording, marketing, touring, and other expenses.
Establish a timeline that outlines key milestones and deadlines. This helps in organizing tasks and maintaining progress.
8. Adaptability and Resilience:
Staying Flexible:
Be prepared to adapt your goals as circumstances change. The music industry is dynamic, and your personal circumstances may evolve over time.
Flexibility allows you to navigate unexpected challenges and seize new opportunities.
Cultivating Resilience:
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward. Cultivate resilience by maintaining a positive mindset, learning from failures, and staying committed to your goals.
Resilience is built through overcoming challenges, not avoiding them.
Setting and achieving musical goals requires a comprehensive approach that includes understanding your vision, planning meticulously, and staying adaptable. By considering these elements, musicians can create a clear and actionable path to success. Remember, the road to success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, adaptable, and resilient, and you will find your path to achieving your musical aspirations.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in achieving your musical goals? Share your thoughts and solutions in the comments below. Your insights could inspire and help fellow musicians on their journey.

Reshaping the Gaze
Shifting that paradigm by focusing on the female gaze, how women perceive and represent their bodies, and the bodies of other women or men. It's about reclaiming agency over their own narratives and visual expressions, away from the objectification and scrutiny often imposed by external perspectives. Through the lenses of nude and naked, the exhibition aims to present a multifaceted exploration of the female experience, embracing the complexities and nuances of womanhood.
In "Feminine Perspectives," we invite you to journey through the nuanced interpretations and diverse representations of the female form as depicted by women artists during the transformative period from 1850 to 1945. This exhibition celebrates female artists' significant contributions to the nude painting genre, offering a captivating exploration of their artistic vision, cultural context, and personal expression.
Spanning across continents and artistic movements, the selected artworks unveil the complexities of the female gaze and challenge conventional norms surrounding nudity and femininity. Central to this exploration is an interrogation of the pervasive influence of the male gaze on representations of women in art. By reclaiming their agency and subverting traditional tropes, female artists disrupt the hegemony of the male gaze, offering alternative narratives that resist objectification and celebrate female subjectivity.
At the heart of "Feminine Perspectives" lies a celebration of artistic agency and empowerment. Female artists, often marginalized and overshadowed in art history, boldly assert their creative prowess through bold brushstrokes, delicate lines, and intricate compositions. Through their art, they reclaim the narrative of the female nude, transcending objectification to present the female form as a symbol of strength, beauty, and resilience.
The exhibition showcases a rich tapestry of styles and themes, from the luminous Impressionist brushwork of Berthe Morisot to the surrealist dreamscapes of Leonor Fini. Suzanne Valadon's intimate portrayals of women at their toilette evoke a sense of vulnerability and introspection, while Tamara de Lempicka's glamorous figures exude confidence and allure.
As you navigate "Feminine Perspectives," we invite you to critically engage with the concept of the male gaze and its impact on representations of women in art. May you find new levels of inspiration, beauty, and purpose in the age-old practice of naked painting via the eyes of these trailblazing women artists.
This group exhibition looks at how women view their bodies, identities, experiences, and perspectives within a male-dominated society throughout history. The male gaze has historically controlled much of visual culture, including advertising, photography, and film. It usually presents women as objects of male desire and frequently highlights their physical attributes and seductive qualities. The existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre presented the idea of the gaze in her 1943 book Being and Nothingness. According to this concept, looking at another person results in a subjective power differential that both the gazed and the gazer feel because the object of the gaze is seen as the subject of the gaze rather than a living being.
Through the selected works in this exhibition, we look into the idea of the female gaze and how these female artists flip this perspective, allowing women to assert their subjectivity and view themselves on their terms. They should be viewed and evaluated as independent people with their agency, desires, and complexity rather than as objects to be examined or assessed via the prism of societal norms. It entails accepting a range of genuine and varied manifestations of femininity and taking back control of their own stories and portrayals.
This exhibition is curated on Tumblr, leveraging its distinctive qualities compared to other social media platforms. Unlike traditional platforms, Tumblr offers a blog-like environment where curation is imbued with a sense of freedom and creativity. Here, content can be shared seamlessly, devoid of the interruptions of comments and unnecessary censorship often encountered elsewhere. Producers can display their work in a setting that supports narrative and artistic expression in a more continuous and immersive manner with this format. Additionally, Tumblr's community ethos fosters engagement and support, further enriching the exhibition experience.

Seeing the Seams: Staying Vigilant in the Digital Age
I think it is very difficult for the general population (myself included) to notice when they are being influenced or manipulated by the media they consume. Every day we encounter disinformation, which has a particular insidious purpose. With disinformation, political actors deliberately manipulate information to achieve political goals (e.g., Bennett & Livingston, 2018; Freelon & Wells, 2020; Wardle, 2017 as cited in Boukes & Hamleers, 2023 p. 71). And dissemination of disinformation is mostly associated with right-wing issue positions, usually of a radical nature. Disinformation is intentionally deceptive, andis meant to convince, the intended recipients by misleading them – for example, by targeting their identities, emotions, and beliefs. (Hancock & Bailenson, 2021, as cited in Boukes & Hamleers, 2023 p. 72)
Given the current disadvantage we are regarding media literacy, you would think this would raise alarm bells for public institutions to ensure that future generations have the tools they need to navigate the digital space with a critical eye. This has not been the case, and there may be an argument to be made that this is what is actually preferred by the hegemonic parties at play. How can the masses rebel against their masters if they are kept in the dark, the knowledge that would be their salvation out of reach? Knowledge is power is indeed the adage that still holds true to this day, never more than in the current information age we find ourselves in.
So how do we tackle this issue along with the many others we face in the digital age? Caragee indicates that it is in fact through focusing on framing research that we will develop tools that can perhaps be used for the good of all. Digital disinformation campaigns sponsored by state or non-state actors (Benkler, Faris & Roberts, 2018 as cited in Caragee 2019 p. 368)) is of importance to look at, as they can influence the most change towards particular agendas, these tactics tend to be used quite advantageously by Right-Wing parties. This was how Boris Johnson’s administration convinced the public that Brexit would be what the country needed at the time, though the facts and figures were awash in disinformation that was portrayed as true. Caragee also mentioned that research should explore framing as a social process within the digital realm, while simultaneously considering digitally enabled frame construction within the context of the strategic and tactical decision-making of movement activists ( Caragee 2019 p. 368) Activist organizations would benefit from this greatly, their messaging capabilities would increase and they would be privy to the same tools that are often weaponized against them by the opposition.
Credit: Neal Cole. These buses certainly were eye-catching.
While this is definitely is a path we as academics and researchers should travel down, it may take some time before we see it implemented in public life. To aid myself when I encounter framing and disinformation in the wild that could impact me greatly, I have devised an exercise in order to help me think critically about the media I am consuming, especially when my it affects me emotionally:
Question the source – What is the source of the information, and if located, where do their allegiances lie?
Is there an agenda – For what purpose is this being shown to me? I usually like to investigate the source, look at other’s comments, and the wider social climate.
Is it verified/truthful – fact checking is key. I find experts or go to fact-checking sites to ensure if the content is actually truthful.
What do they not want me to see – If it is some sort of character assassination or a heroic portrait of an individual, group, or even of an event, it may be good to be sceptical as to why they are being portrayed a certain way.
Look at other sources and perspectives – what is says on the tin. It is helpful to look at all angles before arriving at your own conclusion.
Questioning the world around you is a developed skill; it is very easy to get caught up in what you see and take it at face value, and this can be dangerous. There is not much we can do about the type of framing we are exposed to, but we do still have power over how we choose to engage with it.

Research Plan
How has the portrayal of women and gender roles evolved in reproductive health campaigns over time?
AIMS (What):
Within my research I aim to explore how reproductive health campaigns have depicted women and gender roles in both historical and contemporary periods. My research aims to identify the changes in societal norms related to gender and whether certain stereotypes persist. In understanding of how women are presented in health campaigns, my research can contribute to discussions of sexism within healthcare and its contribution to medical neglect.
My early research findings into the contraceptive pill have found a startling contrast between historic and contemporary advertisements. The older campaigns demonstrate solely of what the pill can do for the benefit of men and not women. Based on these findings, I expect to see significant changes in representation throughout time, though I may be surprised to see that some still perpetuate gender stereotypes. My argument would be one that public health communication should prioritize inclusivity and challenge gender stereotypes to address reproductive health issues more effectively.
RATIONALE (Why):
Reproductive health is an important aspect of public health and campaigns often shape societal perceptions and behaviors. These perceptions ultimately impact how women are treated by medical industries and practitioners. It is essential that these campaigns are examined as it can have detrimental effects on how women are treated.
On a personal level, I have witnessed how sexism within medicine has contributed to the neglect and suffering of women. By extension of this topic, achieving gender equality is a worldwide priority and how women are depicted within campaigns contributes to discussions on gender equality and efforts to promote women’s rights. A specialist’s perspective in the field of visual communication would see this research as highly relevant in that it allows for a deeper understanding of how design choices impact the messaging and effectiveness of campaigns, as well as how their work contributes to promoting inclusive communication.
METHODOLOGY (How):
For my research I am planning to use a wide range of sources including academic journals, books, and historical magazines. Within academic journals I can look to databases such as JSTOR and use keywords such as “sexism in early health campaigns” to identify sources. For books, ‘Picturing Women’s Health’ by Melanie A would be relevant in that it discusses the history of healthcare advertising. Archives and online exhibitions may also contribute to this research process. The most significant piece of analysis will be the historical magazines and advertisements as these will form the basis of my visual analysis.
The research will be approached from an illustrative perspective, as this is my specialism within visual communication. Many of the vintage advertisements use an illustrative technique and I can also use my background in media studies to analyse how layout components and language impact the portrayal of women.
The theme of my research relates to discussions of gender studies and the examination of societal norms and stereotypes. In conjunction to this, the theme of advertising and marketing is also significant here and contributes to how messages influence an audience.
There are multiple theories that can be applied to my research and most of which I studied within media. Some of these include media representation theory, social constructionism, feminist theory, critical discourse analysis and semiotics.
Some case studies I can investigate include the historical birth control campaigns from the early 20th century, contemporary contraceptive advertising, maternal health campaigns, breastfeeding promotion campaigns, social media campaigns and government reproductive health campaigns.

Cleghorn provides a cultural history of the impacts of misogyny on western medicine and western medical practice. This book reveals how in a world built for and by men we are systematically ignoring half of the population, often with disastrous consequences. Straight up leaving the Fandom or changing all of their fan content and it feels very performative and, people not actually thinking critically and just being scared of getting "cancelled"? I feel like your opinions on these matters are very informed and well written so I wanted to ask given that this blog main theme is, well, warrior cat naming system and that seems to be the main issue of the new discourse.
This is probably going to get long, since there's sort of a lot to say about it in order to talk about this whole thing fairly and constructively, because from what I’ve seen there’s a lot of hyperbole happening, and panicking, and disavowing this series and fandom, and so on, like you say, and also some people genuinely trying to have complex meaningful conversations about racism in xenofiction, and also probably some bad faith actors in the mix--as well as some just... stupid actors. Kind of inevitably what happens when two equally bad platforms for having nuanced discussions--i.e., twitter and tumblr--run headlong into each other, in a fandom space with a majority demographic of basically kids and highly anxious, pretty online teens. I don’t mean that as a criticism of fans or their desire to be liked by peers and “correct” about opinions, it’s just the social landscape of Warriors and I think it’s worth pointing out from the start.
If I’m totally honest with you, if not for this ask, I wouldn’t actually be commenting on it at all, because none of this is going to impact this blog or change how I run it in any way. But since you’ve asked and frankly I do feel some responsibility to try to disentangle things a little for everyone stressed and confused at the moment, because I know a lot of people look to this blog for guidance of all sorts, I’m going to talk about what I think has happened here, and how to navigate the situation in a reasonable way.
Quick recap for anyone blissfully unaware: from what I understand, this post (migrated over from a presumably bigger twitter thread) has got a lot of people very worried about Warriors being a racist and appropriative series, and now are trying to figure out what ethically to do about this revelation. The thing I found most interesting about this screenshotted conversation is that it makes a lot of bold claims, but misses some pretty surprising details (in my opinion). If you do look critically at what is being said, here’s a few things to notice--crucially, there are two people talking.
Person 1 says that a lot of animal fantasy fiction + xenofiction (fiction about non-human/”other” beings, such as animals) is frequently built upon stereotypes of First Nations and Indigenous people, and/or appropriates elements of Indigenous culture and tradition as basically set dressing for “strange” and “alien” races/species etc., and this is a racist, deeply othering, and inappropriate practice. This person is right.
I’ve spent years researching in this field specifically, so I feel pretty confident in vouching (for whatever that’s worth) that this person is absolutely right in making this point. Not only is it frequently in animal fiction/xenofiction, but it’s insidious, which means often it’s hard to notice when it’s happening--unless you know what you’re looking for, or you are personally familiar with the details or tropes that are being appropriated. Because of the nature of racism, white and other non-First Nations people don’t always recognise this trend within texts--even texts they’re creating--but it’s important for us all, and especially white people, to be more aware, because it’s not actually First Nations’ people’s responsibility to be the sole critics of this tradition of theft and misuse. Appropriation by non-Indigenous people is in fact the problem, which means non-Indigenous people learning and changing is the solution.
Person 1 offers Warriors as a popular example of a work that has this problem. Notably, this person hasn’t given an example of how Warriors is culpable (at least in this screenshot and I haven’t found the thread itself, because the screenshot is what’s causing this conversation), only that it’s an example of a work that has these problems. And once again, this person is correct. We’ll look at that more in a moment.
Person 2 (three tweets below the first) offers, by comparison, several more specious insights. Firstly, it’s really, really not the only time anyone’s ever talked about this, academically + creatively or in the Warriors fandom specifically, and so that reveals somewhat this person’s previous engagement in the space they’re talking into re: this topic. In other words, this person doesn’t know what has already been said or what is being talked about. Secondly, this person explicitly states that they “[don’t know] much about warrior cats specifically but from what I see it just screams appropriation,” which as a statement I think says something crucial re: the critical lens this person has applied + the amount of forethought and depth of analysis of their criticism of this particular series.
I’m not saying that using twitter to talk about your personal feelings requires you to research everything you talk about before you shoot your mouth off. However, I personally don’t go into a conversation about a topic I don’t know anything about except a cursory glance to offer bold and scathing criticisms based on what it “just screams” to me. By their own admission, this person isn’t really offering good faith, thoughtful criticism of the series, in line with Person 1′s tweet. Instead, Person 2 is talking pretty condescendingly and emphatically about--as the kids say--the vibes they get from the series, and I’m afraid that just doesn’t hold up well in this court.
So now that there’s Person 1 (i.e., very reasonable, important, interesting criticism) and Person 2 (i.e., impassioned but completely vibes-based opinion from someone who hasn’t read the books) separated, we can see there’s actually several things happening in this brief snapshot, and some of them aren’t super congruent with each other.
Person 1 didn’t say “don’t read bad books,” or that you’re a bad person for being a fan of stories that are guilty of this. They suggested people should recognise the ways xenofiction uses Indigenous people and their culture inappropriately and often for profit. My understanding of this tweet is someone offering an insight that might not have occurred to many people, but that is valuable and important to consider going forward in how they view, engage with, and create xenofiction media.
Person 2 uses high modality, evocative language that appeals to the emotions. That’s not a criticism of this person: they’re allowed to talk in whatever tone they want, and to express their personal feelings and opinions. However, rhetorically, this person is using this specific language--consciously or subconsciously--to incense their audience--i.e., you. Are you feeling called to action? What action do you feel called to when you rea their words, despite the fact their claims are not based in their own actual analysis of or engagement with the text? It’s, by their own admission, not analysis at all. Everything they evoke is purely in the name of “not good” vibes.
Earlier I mentioned that Person 1 is correct that Warriors is absolutely guilty of appropriation of First Nations and Indigenous people and culture. I also mentioned that they didn’t specify how. That’s because I think the most egregious example is in fact the tribe, which in many ways plays into the exact kind of stereotyping and appropriation of First Nations Americans that Person 1 mentions, and not the clans, contrary to Person 2′s suggestion. For instance, in addition to the very loaded name of “tribe”, there’s a lot of racist tropes present in how that group of cats is introduced and how the clan cats interact with them, as well as the more North American-inspired scenery of their home. It’s very blatant as far as racism in this series.
When it comes to the clans themselves, though, I think it’s muddier and harder to draw clear distinctions of what is directly appropriative, what is coincidentally and superficially reminiscent, and what is not related at all. Part of this difficulty in drawing hard lines comes from the fact that, on a personal level, it actually doesn’t matter: if a First Nations person reads a story and feel it is appropriative or inappropriate, it’s not actually anyone’s place to “correct” them on their reading of the text. Our experiences are unique and informed by our perspectives and values, and no group of people are a monolith, which means within community, there will always be disagreement and differenting points of view. There is no one single truth or opinion, which means that First Nations people even in the same family might have very different feelings about the same text and very different perspectives on how respectful, or not, it might be.
I’m saying this because something that gets said very often when conversations of racism and similar oppressive systems present/perpetuated in texts comes up, people frequently say: “listen to x voices.” It is excellent advice. However, the less pithy but equally valuable follow-up advice is: “listen to the voices of many people of x group, gather information and perspective, and then ultimately use your own judgement to make an informed opinion for yourself.” It means that you are responsible for you. The insight you can gain by listening to people who know topics and experiences far better than you do is truly invaluable, but if your approach to the world is simply to parrot the first voice, or loudest voice, or angriest voice you come across, you will not really learn anything or be able to develop your own understanding and you certainly won’t be making well-informed judgements.
In other words, one incomplete tweet thread from two people who are each bringing quite different topics and modes of conversation (or perhaps gripes, in Person 2′s case) to the table is not really enough to go off re: making a decision to leave a fandom, in my opinion. In fact, I think in responding to anything difficult, complex, or problematic (which doesn’t mean what popular adage bandies it about to mean) by trying to distance yourself, or cleanse of it, will ultimately harm you and will not do you any good as a person. It is better, in my opinion, to enter into complex relationships with the world and media and other people in an informed, aware way and with a willingness to learn and sometimes to make mistakes and be wrong, rather than shy away from potential conflict or fear that interacting with a text will somehow taint you or define your morality in absolutes.
So. Does Warriors have racist and appropriative elements, tropes, and issues in the series? Yes, of course it does, it’s a book-packaged series produced by corporation HarperCollins and written by a handful of white British women and their myriad ghostwriters. Racism is just one part of the picture. The books are frequently also ableist, sexist, and homophobic (or heteronormative, depending how you want to slice it, I guess), just to name some of the most evident problems.
But does the presence of these issues mean it’s contaminated and shouldn’t be touched? Personally, I don’t think so. Given the nature of existing the world, it’s not possible to find perfect media that is free of any kind of bias, prejudice, or even just ideas or topics or concepts that are challenging or uncomfortable. I think it’s more meaningful to choose to engage with these elements, discuss them, criticise them, learn from them, and acknowledge also that imperfection is the ultimate destiny of all of us, especially creators.
I’m not saying that as a pass, like, “oh enjoy your media willy-nilly, nothing matters, do what you want, think about no-one else ever because we’re all flawed beings,” but rather that it’s important not to look away from the problems in the things we enjoy, rather than cut off all contact and enjoyment when we realise the problems. That doesn’t mean you have to only criticise and always be talking about how bad a thing you like is either, publicly admonishing yourself or the text, because that’s also not a constructive way to engage with media.
As I said, there’s a lot to say here, and believe it or not, this is honestly the shortest version I could manage. There’s always more to say and plenty I haven’t talked about, but pretty much tl;dr:
I don’t find Person 2′s commentary particularly compelling, personally, because I think it’s a little broad and a little specious in its conclusions and evidence, and I also suspect that this person is speaking more from their feelings than from a genuine desire to educate or meaningfully criticise, unlike Person 1. That’s not to say Warriors isn’t frequently racist and guilty of the issues Person 1 is discussing, because it is, but I don’t think this tweet thread is a great source of insight into the ongoing history of this problem in xenofiction, or Warriors specifically, on its own. I would recommend exploring further afield to learn more from a variety of sources and form your own opinions. I hope this helps.
#just in case anyone sees this post and gets the wrong idea: i'm not inviting debate on this.#i am saying that first nations people are allowed to have ANY relationship with texts because that's how subjectivity works.#they are allowed to have negative neutral or positive experiences of texts--even 'bad' ones that have a lot of problems.#the people in this tweet are just talking about their thoughts and it's their bad luck the world's a public forum and it's spiralled.#the other thing i am saying is that if your approach to media is exclusively to cut out any problematic text like it's a cancer#that's not a great strategy. just straight up. you're better off developing critical insight and your own opinions and confidence.#by most parameters i can think of warriors as a series pretty much sucks really bad and i've been saying that for nearly ten years.#despite being so phenomenally flawed it can still have value--and much of its value in my opinion is IN these conversations about it.#so yeah tl;dr 2: i'm not here to slap-fight with teens which is what much discourse devolves to after 5 mins on tumblr so don't try it.

Interview: Shilin Huang, Creator of Amongst Us and Carciphona
Shilin Huang ( @okolnir )is a Canadian freelance artist and comic creator, known for her long-running series Carciphona. She has a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Western Ontario. Carciphona is a long-form fantasy story set in a world where demon-magic is forbidden. The series follows a young sorceress named Veloce, and the mythical assassin assigned to kill her, Blackbird.
Shilin’s newest book, Amongst Us, based on the webcomic of the same name, is an alternate universe comic that reimagines Veloce and Blackbird as musicians and girlfriends in the modern world. You can support the physical release for Amongst Us book 1 on Kickstarter today.
The first book of Amongst Us is coming soon. How do you feel about the release?
Eager and relieved!! I had worked for so long to make the web format viable for print format, as well doing all the extra drawings that were necessary--like covers--that I had to keep under wraps, it felt great to know that that part is finally done and I can release my child into the wild. I was very worried too before the launch of the Kickstarter, because though I am the one who made this story, I am not quite a slice-of-life type of person myself, and it was hard for me to see value in this mundane, not-plot-driven kind of story as a printed book. But I was very lucky to have that worry dispelled!
What drew you towards creating comics and artwork? Was it a dream of yours?
I’ve been drawing since before elementary school because I enjoyed it, and somewhere along the way, I wanted to create my own characters, and then I wanted stories for them. It was always just me doing what I felt like doing, more so than something that I aspired towards achieving consciously. If I had to analyze the allure myself, maybe it was because people and the world are so interesting, I’ve always loved thinking about their nature and circumstances, and art/storytelling was the best way for me to explore and share those thoughts.
Could you briefly walk us through your creative process for making a page of Carciphona or an episode of Amongst Us?
Carciphona is a long, plot-driven story, and so the scale of preparation required before the page eclipses the actual drawing of the page itself. [A] small moment has some larger impact in the plot, character development, and accuracy of world-building. So I usually spend about half a year or more writing out an entire volume, read it over many times over the course of the years, before I do the same thing with sketching the entire volume on the computer, rearranging pages and panels and entire scenes for best delivery, before I finally commit to drawing out each page in detail on the computer.
Where Carciphona is like an elaborate set course where I chop up and measure ingredients and time their cooking with a careful game plan so everything can be served as they should, Amongst Us is more like an omelette that I’m making to taste. There is still planning and writing ahead of time, but each episode is much more self-contained, and I do more of the planning of the episode within the episode itself, adding and taking away details as I see fit before I feel like it reads naturally enough for me to fine line, colour, and paint.
You talk about being a self-taught artist, how did you learn to create artwork? What are some of your favorite educational resources?
While I did come across many tutorials, they were mostly short ones here and there made by my peers, so I don’t have any favourites in my mind that I can share ): . I learned by just looking at the art of my peers at the time and drawing a lot myself, thinking about what I could learn from each time I see something great, and what I could try next time to make the next drawing look better to me. When I had just started drawing digitally, the internet was quite new, drawing tablets expensive and uncommon, with no social media to share art or find resources. Over time, I did try to learn more properly by doing studies and seeking out professional tutorials, but I found that I hated it and decided that I’d rather learn and make mistakes at my own pace and be happy than to commit to effective and efficient learning and make myself dislike drawing.
Amongst Us is, of course, an Alternate Universe comic featuring characters from Carciphona. What inspired you to put your characters into a GL slice of life work?
Back in 2006, when I started drawing Carciphona, I had no plans of this frenemies dynamic for the two main characters, Blackbird and Veloce, and when the thought had occurred to me as I continue to tweak the story, canon GL relationships were still rare and rarely accepted. I was even told on many occasions by readers that they hope the two do not end up with some couples dynamic, or they will no longer be interested in the story. Ultimately, Carciphona was a fantasy story about an entire world, and I wasn’t going to risk the story’s reception over a small detail like whether or not Blackbird and Veloce sleep together, so I just played with the ideas of their relationship on the side, in paintings of many different AUs. Eventually, all that did was make me become so attached to the idea that I decided to say, screw it, I need someplace where they could be together, and I’m drawing an AU for real.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your work? Both Amongst Us and Carciphona.
I love a lot of things, feelings, aesthetics, and I eat up all of that and take it back out in the form of my stories. The inspiration is everywhere, from beautiful imagery I witness in pictures and in real life, to [the] lives of people that I hear about or experience firsthand, to the ethics and structures of professions from mechanics to medicine… In feelings, knowledge, and perspective, there’s an infinite amount of things that makes me think, and that thinking is what creates AU and Carciphona, whether or not that line of inspiration can be clearly drawn back to the root of the thought.
What are some of your biggest challenges or fears creating Amongst Us? Was there any realization or advice that helped you overcome those difficulties?
My biggest fear is always in relatability because it’s a difference between me and the reader that I do not and cannot have a solution for because it involves another person. In such a relatable genre as slice of life/comedy/romance, where the readers have more experience and therefore more varied but stronger expectations of a version of life that is relatable to them, I know that even if somehow I become a master writer, I still would not be able [to] say whether I could story that others would get or would be interested in, especially because I am aware I am an oddball when it comes to how I think, how I live, and what I value. What helped me the most was simply seeing that there were readers who did enjoy the stories for what it was, and reminding myself that I’m telling the stories to find those who might enjoy it, not to avoid those who might not. It’s a different perspective, rather than a solution, so the worry constantly resurfaces, but I hope it becomes easier over time as I am proven wrong more often!
Amongst Us readers have gotten to see Veloce and Blackbird as an established couple, and now we are witnessing flashbacks to how they first met. Where do you hope to take the series in the future?
I intend to tell both of these timelines concurrently, so as the couple timeline ended at episode 20, I intend to end the flashback at around episode 40, and then switch again at episode 60, and so on. While this kills the momentum for each arc, I made AU so that I can have the cake and eat it too--I want both their back story and a happy ending at the same time without having to wait 10-20 years for it, like I do with Carciphona’s plot haha!
What is one dream or aspiration you would like to accomplish? Even if it is unrealistic.
My only dream right now is just to finish both Carciphona and AU before my time’s up! Funny how unrealistic is specified, it made me realize that I rarely consider unrealistic dreams/aspirations as worth thinking about as they are unlikely to happen when there are so many other things I want to do that are actually possible. Most of my unrealistic dreams actually revolve around music, a profession I had left behind with an aching heart. I dream to play a concerto with an orchestra someday, or even learn to conduct, but for now, drawing my dreams out feels enjoyable and fulfilling enough a compromise!
What advice do you have for people wanting to create artwork and comics?
The true challenge these days I feel like is rarely in the work itself; there are so many readily available free resources that anyone who is capable of working hard and thinking critically will sooner or later be able to master skills they acquire to some degree. What is truly challenging is finding, and then accepting, what paths work for you. Someone might find great joy in working in a studio with a group on something big, while someone else might only enjoy drawing what they feel. Both, in this current climate, will be compelled to adhere to the standards of drawing what others want to see in order to gain recognition and financial stability, one will thrive, one will not.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind is understanding what you want out of drawing/creating, and why. Understanding yourself is often not as straight-forward as it may seem, everyone has different circumstances that subtly motivates them to sometimes misdirect energy and misinterpret what it is they truly want. Some people need to be understood, some people want an excuse to execute, and some people want fame, money, recognition, validation. Whatever it is, and all valid, understanding and accepting your own motivations to create can tremendously help you find the path forward that is suitable for you, not anyone else, even if it might mean following an impractical path that no one else recommends.
Finally, after the release of the first Amongst Us book, what is next for you? Anything special your fans can look forward to?
My game plan through the decades has always been to just keep going. I did choose long-form projects such as the comics that I draw, and the best thing I can do is to just keep it up and reach those exciting points of the story that I’ve always worked towards, no matter how uneventful that may make my work routine sound. However, I do have a little side thing with a(nother) recurring theme that I’ve been doing here and there for fun whenever I had time, people who keep up with my social media art posts may have noticed. If I ever accumulate enough material, maybe there will be some bonus snacks for my readers on the horizon!
Read Carciphona and Amongst Us online now and be sure to support the physical release on Amongst Us book 1 on Kickstarter today. Also, be sure to follow Shilin on Twitter @Okolnir.

Transmedia Storytelling: A Perspective on the Homestuck Epilogues
First of all, thank you for reading my first post! I created this blog to document some of my research for a directed study project. I’ll be looking at Homestuck from an interdisciplinary lens but focusing especially on its formal artistic qualities and place in art history. The blog will contain various points of analysis which I develop over the course of the project. For my first piece of writing, I wanted to tackle (from a new perspective) what I view as a complicating factor in the controversy surrounding the Homestuck Epilogues.
Rather than critiquing the Epilogues’ content or making a judgement about their overall quality, I want to explore a specific criticism which has been echoed time and time again by fans. In an article for the online journal WWAC, Homestuck fan-writer Masha Zhdanova sums up this criticism:
“No matter how much members of the creative team insist that their extension to the Homestuck line of work is no more official than fanwork, if it’s hosted on Homestuck.com, promoted by Homestuck’s official social media accounts, and endorsed by the original creator, I think it’s a little more official than a fanfic with thirty hits on AO3.”
Between attacks on the Epilogues’ themes, treatment of characters, and even prose-quality, fans have frequently referenced the issue of endorsement and canonicity as summarized above. Although the Epilogues and Homestuck’s other successors (including Homestuck^2 and the Friendsims) attempt to tackle themes of canonicity within their narratives, critics of the Epilogues contend that this philosophical provocation falls flat. While the creators argue that the works should form a venue for productively questioning canonicity, fans point to issues of capital and call the works disingenuous. In Episode 52 of the Perfectly Generic Podcast Andrew Hussie explains that, to him, the Epilogues are “heavily implied to be a piece of bridge-media, which is clearly detached from the previous narrative, and conceptually ‘optional’ by its presentation, which allows it to also function as an off-ramp for those inclined to believe the first seven acts of Homestuck were perfectly sufficient.” As Zhdanova paraphrases, a critical view posits that this “optional” reading is impossible. The company ethos and production of capital inherent to the Epilogue’s release—their promotion, their monetization—renders their “fanfic” backdrop completely moot, if not insulting.
Why does appropriating the “aesthetic trappings” [1] of AO3 strike such a chord with critics, though? What’s wrong with the Epilogue creators profiting from their work? Other officially endorsed “post-canon” materials, including the Paradox Space comics, Hiveswap and Friendsim games, have not inspired such virulent opposition. The issue comes down to the association between the AO3 layout and the separation from canon. The Epilogues ask us to read them as “tales of dubious authenticity,” but critics assert that this reading makes no sense in the context of their distribution. It’s not exactly the endorsement or monetization that prevents a “dubious” reading, though. After all, Hiveswap is also endorsed and monetized, yet fans have no problem labeling it as “dubiously canon.” So what is it about the Epilogues’ presentation that seems so incongruous with their premise as “dubious” texts?
I’ve come to understand this issue through the lens of transmedia storytelling. First conceptualized by Henry Jenkins, “transmedia storytelling” involves the production of distinct stories, contained within the same universe, across different media platforms. [2] This allows consumers to pick and choose stories across their favorite media outlets, since each story is self-contained, but superfans can still consume All The Content for a greater experience. The Marvel franchise with its comics, movies, TV shows, and other ephemera, is a great example of the transmedia phenomenon.
How does Homestuck fit into this theory? In an excellent article [3] for the Convergence journal, Kevin Veale lays out a taxonomy for Homestuck’s role in new media frameworks. Rather than dispersing different stories across multiple media platforms, Homestuck combines the “aesthetic trappings” of many media forms into one massive outlet: the Homestuck website [4]. It’s almost like the inverse of transmedia storytelling. Veale describes this type of storytelling as “transmodal.” He further defines Homestuck’s storytelling as “metamedia,” meaning that it manipulates the reader’s expectations of certain media forms to change the reading experience. So, despite its multimedia aspects, Homestuck structures itself around one monolith distribution channel (the website), the importance of which directly feeds into what we know as “upd8 culture.” The Homestuck website itself, as a “frame” which encapsulates Homestuck and the other MS Paint Adventures, takes on a nostalgic quality; the familiar grey background and adblocks become inextricably linked with the production of the main, “canon” narrative.
Homestuck itself—the main narrative—is a transmodal venture. However, as of writing this post, the Homestuck franchise has taken a leap into transmedia waters, starting with the Paradox Space comics and continuing with Hiveswap, the Friendsims, and Homestuck^2. All four of these examples fit the definition of transmedia ventures: they contain distinct stories still set in the Homestuck universe and are distributed through fundamentally separate media channels from the main comic. Which is to say, crucially, none of them are hosted on the Homestuck website.
This is where I think the issue arises for the Epilogues. The Epilogues, from what I can tell, aimed to present themselves as a transmedia venture rather than a transmodal one. Firstly, they try to act as a “bridge-media,” or self-contained story. They can be read as a continuation of Homestuck, but can also be separated or ignored. Secondly, they take on a distinct format (prose). Hussie notes in PGP Ep. 52 that the Epilogues were originally only meant to be published in print, functioning as a “cursed tome.” In short, they were intended as a transmedia venture: a self contained story, distributed through a separate medium (prose) and separate media channel (print), to be embraced or discarded by consumers at their whim.
Instead, when the Epilogues were released through the main Homestuck website, readers couldn’t help but interpret them as part of Homestuck’s long transmodal history. Rather than interacting with a new distribution channel, readers returned to the same nostalgic old grey website. The AO3 formatting gag makes no real difference to readers, as Homestuck patently appropriates the aesthetics of other platforms all throughout its main narrative. This issue of distribution (print versus website), which in turn produces either a transmedia or transmodal reading, is the crux of the criticism I mentioned before. Despite the creators’ protests, readers failed to see any “question” of canonicity because the Epilogues fit perfectly into the comic’s preexisting transmodal framework, supported even further by the nostalgia of the website’s very layout. The Epilogues read as a transmodal contribution to Homestuck’s main channel rather than a post-canon, transmedia narrative (like Paradox Space or the Friendsims) as they were intended. This created a profound dissonance between the fans’ experiences and the creators’ intentions.
How things might have turned out differently if the Epilogues really had been released solely as “cursed tomes,” the world will never know. In PGP, Hussie cites the importance of making content freely accessible on the website as a reason for the online release, which is certainly a valid consideration. Even though the print format offers a much clearer conceptual standpoint as a transmedia “bridge-story” [5], issues of capital and accessibility may still have come to the forefront of discussion. As it stands, though, I think the mix-up between transmedia and transmodal distribution was a key factor in the harsh criticism the Epilogues sparked.

[1] I love this term, “aesthetic trappings”, which Masha Zhdanova uses, so I’ve overused it to some degree in my post.

[4] Although the Homestuck website shifted branding from mspaintadventures.com to homestuck.com before the Epilogues’ release and has shifted its aesthetic somewhat (re: banners and ads), I treat the core “website” as the same location in my post
[5] Hussie points to numerous fascinating experiences which might have arisen from the print distribution. He describes a tome as “something which maddeningly beckons, due to whatever insanity it surely contains, but also something which causes feelings of trepidation” and references the sheer size of the book and “stark presentation of the black and white covers” as elements which produce this trepidation. The ability to physically experience (through touch) the length of the Epilogues and the impact of the book cover were lost in the online format. Although the Epilogues have been released in their intended book format now, the printed novel still won’t be a “first reading experience” for most fans.
