So I’ve had some Thoughts about Folklore and Wifwulf
I ended up reading Wifwulf this week, and it got me thinking about how much of a natural fit folklore and comics are. Hell, Wonder Woman, Thor, and Shazam have roots in mythology. And in a lot of ways it makes sense, as Scott McCloud points out in his Understanding Comics, The Codex Zouche-Nuttall and the Bayeux Tapestry is a proto-comic. And while those are more historical records, the point I'm making is art has always been a way to capture the culture of the time. I know people make jokes about historians of the future thinking Spider-man is a deity, but it feels not too far off the mark. Though future historians will likely have more context around Spider-man and more detailed records of his history. But comics are a more traditional medium than they're often given credit for.
Wifwulf is original but in some ways feels very classic. It's very much a werewolf story, but it's not a "man" wolf; it's about a "woman" wolf. And what I like about Wifwulf is its subversion. Typical werewolf stories are about losing control and becoming a monster; Wifwulf is about becoming free. It makes a lot of sense since our society is patriarchal. So the "man" benefits more from fitting in, so losing that and becoming a "wolf" is a loss for them. But the "woman" only gains. In someways it reminds me of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters (particularly the first volume) where Karen is always drawn as a werewolf and connects to people through 'monstrosity' which ultimately is just humanity and kindness.
Now there is even a bit of subversion in the art. Mostly the panel structured. All of the panels with Charity in the wood are not really squares; the outside of the panels actually looks like a tree. But when in the city, it takes the more rigid structure, which again fits with the Wifwulf gaining freedom and connecting not only to nature, but her nature through the art. The only place where this diverges a bit is at the end when the panels become more fluid-looking but keep the free feeling.
Ogden's art in general is a highlight of Wifwulf, as it's just really a treat to look at. And while I find the story a little short, it does a lot with that short read. And what is nice with the paperback is all the guest art and extra little treats at the end. I know I don't talk about those much, but I do always enjoy them, and I think they are a little extra special, especially here, especially for the plant guide it gives at the ends because it motivates second reads to look for where the plants are placed.
Sometimes what I enjoy most about comics is when they get me thinking about comics as a whole. Wifwulf is a nice twist on a traditional folktale and uses that format to talk about the current world.

You should tell us about color psychology that sounds cool as hell
YES HA HA HA… YES!
GGGOD I WISH I WASN’T OUT OF THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW. but i’ve been thinking about colors literally all day so you all get to be subject to my madness! sorry this is long and rambly wauaua. nightmarishly long post under the cut.
okay. first things first, a few basics. color theory and color psychology tend to get confused a lot in discussions, but they usually refer to different things. color theory is more about we physically perceive colors (color wheels and color schemes the like), while color psychology focuses on our emotional response to colors. if you’re familiar with the children’s hospital color theory post, that poster wasn’t actually talking about color theory, but color psychology (and also it’s incredibly surface level and heavily misunderstands the subject because in what fucking universe does the quantity of positive associations with a color matter more than the context it’s used in and sorry i have personal beef with this tumblr post).
color theory is also a special interest of mine but i’m not gonna touch on it too much here because it’s not entirely important. mmmaybe another time…
essentially, certain colors (and color combinations) have associations in our brains and that affect our behavior and emotions. these associations are also very much affected by the context a color is used in. colors don’t exist in a vacuum! so while red can symbolize passion and love when used in something like a dress or a bouquet of flowers, it has a very different connotation when it’s, say, splattered on the walls or smeared on the ground in a snail trail.
or for a less Children’s Hospital Themed example, i’ll put my euphrasie and king designs here!
Tumblr media
(of course the saturation and brightness of these blues play a massive part in how they’re perceived but this is not a post about color theory this is n)
and, of course, combining colors in a piece can also change their meanings!! i’m about to get real fucking normal.
i’m gonna be focusing on the color combo of red and yellow here because it’s the one that’s most relevant to my art (and also it’s really interesting.) basically, seeing these two colors together activates the part of our brain that controls our appetite, making us actually feel hungry. this is why so many food companies use red and yellow in their branding! it’s neat stuff!!
Tumblr media
also, if you’re familiar with it, this is why the mv for butcher vanity uses this color palette!! along with red’s general associations with danger and blood, the color combo also physically induces hunger. pretty fitting for a song about cannibalism!
Tumblr media
(there is also red’s association with lust and passion and how that intersects with the double meaning in the lyrics but i cannot derail this post into being an analysis of butcher vanity i’m sorry. we’d be here all week. maybe another day... wipes a tear from my eye)
and i think this might be the reason why some people feel hungry when they see my art, even when i’m not drawing food. while i don’t tend to use red outright, most of my art has very warm undertones (red-oranges and yellows especially), which could be activating that hunger response??
Tumblr media
(ah fuck color theory managed to weasel its way into this post again)
admittedly this part is just speculation on my end. i think my rendering style and Shapes also play a role in it, but it’s interesting for me to think about!!
this is only scratching the surface of how complicated colors can get. i was going to go on an entire tangent about color grading and how green lighting can make a scene feel unnerving but this post is already Too Fucking Long. aaaa super sorry if this is Rambly or hard to understand!! i’m not Entirely sure how much the average person knows about color theory and psychology so if there’s any confusing terms here i’m fine with adding stuff for clarity!
wauauuaa thank you so much for asking!!!! i love talking about colors.
tl;dr colors have a bunch of different emotions and meanings tied to them, but you’ve gotta pay attention to the context in which it’s being used. so maybe take a step back before you put that thick red trail on the floor of your children’s hospital.

the qiong ding peak disciples 100% have petty beef with lbh for stealing their favourite didi lmao
they're not gonna Actually beat him up (without Reason) but they're very emphatic about how thoroughly they WILL if lbh messes with sy. it's like a shovel talk that never ends
sy isn't actually completely oblivious to whats going on but he doesn't get why they're like this and he thinks theyre being fucking stupid (and he trusts them to not actually bully binghe) so he's elected to ignore their antics entirely
#arts#mottau#next chapter almost done so im letting these loose now#hou jingxing is standing on the Box of Dramatic Height Effect in the first image. she is actually shorter than lbh#bai yunqi does not get in on their antics but he is Watching lbh to make sure he's not Problem#lbh is not scared of these bitches he WILL fight for the right to hang out with sy if he has to#most of this (particularly for hou jingxing + li yanying) is just childish jealousy over how much sy obviously likes spending time with lbh#part of it is that having an interested alpha who they don't know hovering around the omega of their group#does clock as a Potential Threat on a purely instinctual level#but there is also a Not Insignificant portion of this (esp for bai yunqi)#which is that they met sy when he couldnt talk or walk on his own and clung to yqy like his life depended on it#its sort of left an impression on them! esp bc nowadays its very clear he wasn't like that because thats normal for him/his preference/etc#the younger two especially probably wouldnt even be able to put into words that its something that worries them but it does all the same#lbh on the other hand only met sy after he was already growing MUCH more independent#he's never known sy as anything other than how he is now. what he DOES know is that sy was the first person who ever REALLY helped him here#so he's never thought of sy as someone who needs to be sheltered or protected even though sy is a few years younger than him#and that's a HUGE part of why sy spends so much time with him

Round 3 - Reptilia - Piciformes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Our next order of birds are the Piciformes. This is a large order, containing the living families Bucconidae (“puffbirds”), Galbulidae (“jacamars”), Megalaimidae (“Asian barbets”), Lybiidae (“African barbets”), Capitonidae (“New World barbets”), Semnornithidae (“toucan barbets”), Ramphastidae (“toucans”), Indicatoridae (“honeyguides”), and Picidae (“woodpeckers”).
The Piciformes are quite diverse with a variety of body, and particularly beak, types. Nearly all Piciformes have parrot-like zygodactyl feet: two toes forward and two back, an arrangement that has advantages for birds that spend much of their time on tree trunks. Most piciformes are insectivores, though the barbets and toucans mainly eat fruit, and some piciformes also supplement their diet with eggs and small vertebrates.
All Piciformes nest in cavities (either burrows or holes in trees or termite mounds) and have altricial young, hatched completely naked. Aside from the jacamars, Piciformes do not have down feathers at any age, only developing true feathers. They are generally monogamous, at least for one breeding season, and both parents take care of the chicks.
Piciformes evolved around the Early Eocene, with the modern families known to exist since the mid-late Oligocene.
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
The constellation Tucana, containing most of the Small Magellanic Cloud, is named after the toucan.
The largest Piciform is the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) (see gif above), with an average length of 56 cm (1.8 ft).
The Greater Honeyguide (Indicator indicator) (image 2) is best known for its mutualistic relationship with humans. When a Greater Honeyguide has found a hive of honeybees with a large yield of honey, it will attract the attention of humans through specific calls. It will then lead the humans to the hive. Once the humans have collected the honey, the honeyguide sweeps in to eat the larvae and wax. Honey-hunters have specific calls and whistles used to call honeyguides when they are about to search for honey. Adults but not juvenile honeyguides will respond to these calls, signifying that a response to the calls is taught. Claims that it also guides non-human animals are disputed; humans seem to be the only animals to understand the bird calls. In some parts of Kenya, Greater Honeyguides have stopped guiding, due to a lack of responses by people in the area.
While they mainly eat insects, honeyguides are unique among birds for being able to digest beeswax.
In folklore, it is frequently noted that the honeyguide should be thanked with a gift of honey; if not, it may lead its follower to a lion, bull elephant, or venomous snake as punishment. Honeyguides do rarely lead humans to venomous snakes, but this is probably due to error by the birds, or perhaps as a means of trying to get humans to remove a snake from a nesting area.
Woodpeckers are known for their characteristic behavior of drumming their beaks on wood. This is done to “drill” for insects under the bark, to communicate, and to make nest holes. To prevent brain damage from rapid and repeated powerful impacts, woodpeckers have a number of physical features that protect their brains. These include a relatively small and smooth brain, narrow subdural space, little cerebrospinal fluid surrounding it (to prevent it from moving back and forth inside the skull during pecking), the orientation of the brain within the skull, and a skull which consists of strong but compressible, sponge-like bone.
Woodpeckers have long, sticky, barbed tongues for extracting food (insects and larvae) from trees. The tongue bone (or hyoid bone) of the woodpecker is so long that it winds around the skull through a special cavity, thereby cushioning the brain during pecking.
The smallest woodpecker is the Bar-breasted Piculet (Picumnus aurifrons), which is typically 7.5 cm (3 in) long and weighs 8 to 10 g (0.28 to 0.35 oz).
The American birdwatcher’s Thylacine, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) is presumed extinct, as the last universally accepted sighting in the United States was in 1944, and the last universally accepted sighting in Cuba was in 1987. However, hope remains that the bird may persist somewhere, and sightings are still made to this day (most of them probably other woodpecker species and none of them confirmed). Habitat protection and restoration efforts have been initiated in areas where the species might persist.
The related Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis), endemic to Mexico, is also presumed extinct. If they have gone extinct, it would have been due to habitat destruction and fragmentation combined with hunting. If it is not extinct, it is the world's largest woodpecker species, at 56–60 cm (1.8–2 ft) long.
One of the accounts of the founding of Rome, preserved in the work known as Origo Gentis Romanae, refers to a legend of a woodpecker bringing food to the boys Romulus and Remus during the time they were abandoned in the wild.
In the 2016 Nintendo 3DS game Pokémon Sun and Moon, the Pokémon Toucannon had an evolution line based on the phylogenetic relationships within Piciformes, perhaps one of the only Pokémon evolution lines to make a nod to real-life phylogeny. The first evolution, Pikipek, is based on a Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). The second, Trumbeak, resembles a honeyguide. The final evolution, Toucannon, is modeled after a Toco Toucan.

Since you've been going through the vocals, can you tell us the difference between Heart and Soul singing? It's still kinda hard for me to differentiate them when listening, and I'm not too sure what to listen for
Chonny himself answered this in the Q&A from a few years back back, here's his answer on it:
Tumblr media
The main difference between Soul and Heart is the type and intensity of their pitch-correction. Heart is made to sound like a normal take, using pitch-correction only to fine-tune the notes that they sing to sit better in the music, while Soul’s is heavily cranked to sound almost robotic, even though each is in the same register.
(I definitely recommend reading the full Q&A by the way. it's super insightful)
my personal answer though (which, could very well be wrong) is that there's some extra differences not mentioned above, which are moreso related as to how Chonny sings; I feel his voices for Soul and Heart sound different when he's performing as each. they're very slight, but I do feel they're there and I hope aren't just a sign of me going crazy... (probably)
I've seen people notice that Heart's voice tends to crack at times -- this is however, not just a Heart trait; this is kind of just... a Chonny trait. Soul's voice cracks a bit at times and so does Mind's (though for Mind it's never really noticeable due to the instrumentals. I've only been able to notice it in the vocal-only audio). that being said! saying Heart's voice tends to crack isn't entirely wrong either! because at this point I *do* believe Chonny intentionally stresses his voice when performing as Heart. the cracks happen so frequently (compared to when he's not performing as Heart) that it's hard to believe it could be unintentional. it makes it sound like Heart is always distressed - which fits his character.
with Soul, there are of course the differences CJ mentioned already; though one thing to mention is that the autotune / intentionally making him sound robotic isn't always there. it's missing in a lot of the older songs, like Spring and a Storm and Never Meant to Know. this is explained by the fact that back then there was no story or characters planned and it's just CJ singing, and those songs later on ended up being attributed to Soul :P
other than that though... this honestly could just be me but it feels like Soul sings with more confidence than Heart? in some songs (namely Mucka Blucka) there's even a hint of authority in his voice; which is fitting for him of course, and if it really is done intentionally, then I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
funnily enough, when Soul *does* sound distressed, he sounds a lot more like Heart -- this is super noticeable in The Bidding when Soul realized Heart & Mind finally harmonized together and is desperately begging for them to work together again. if it weren't for the voice effects on top, I could believe this was Heart.
so... TL;DR: asides from Heart having little to no effects and Soul sounding nearly robotic; the difference between each is Chonny's voice performance for both. Heart tends to sound distressed; while Soul tends to sound more confident in comparison. which I think is cool and probably didn't need this long of a post to explain it... I hope this helped?

Turning the Chain into Furries pt 2: W a r r i o r s
I STRUGGLED with this one ngl, I’m already not very experienced with animals, and there’s no reason for lions to be that hard to draw. Regarding the symbolism for the lion, I read a bunch of different websites on spirit animals, and chose the ones I felt best fit Wars.
I went back and forth on giving him his actual scarf, or just coloring his hair lol. If I draw him more in the future I might experiment with different design choices and see if the scarf was a better choice lol
