webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

RE: Your post on the AU of Jimmy being in the cockpit rather than Curly.

I think that Curly would think that Jimmy was reaping what he had sown, but in a way would feel a twisted sense of relief that Jimmy was brought down by his own actions rather than Curly himself having to be the "executioner" in the situation, so to speak.

With "taking responsibility" and the fix-it mentality that he and Jimmy share being the overarching theme, compounded with Jimmy flat out insinuating that all of his crimes on the Tulpar will be "Curly's tragedy" in that one scene, I think Curly would almost find comfort in the irony that the choice was forcibly taken away from him. Which in itself is messed up, but it might be a bit cathartic. There's an interesting polarizing dynamic within Curly's relationship to his own responsibility in that it's his greatest burden and the thing he, too, avoids the most.

I don't think Curly would find any relief in this actually. While Curly didn't/doesn't like the responsibility he had, he defiantly doesn't avoid it, he just goes about it in a weird way.

A thing I noticed is that its less about taking responsibility with Curly and really what that responsibility meant objectively and then subjectively to Curly. The leniency that he applies to Jimmy also applies a bit to the others as well. He thinks his responsibility is more towards keeping the peace and things in order more than dolling out punishment. He has even more choices to make and responsibilities as he literally has to make sure they survive/ration long enough to be saved. Or figure out how to save them himself. The correct issue with Curly and responsibility is the prioritization in his head. He sees the big picture and prioritizes that. He doesn't notice the little things that he should but it's not a active dismissal, perhaps not even conscious despite how dismissive he seemed. He takes too much responsibility, espcially in regards to Jimmy, and I think this situation is when he realizes that is also a bad thing as he can't "fix" all of his wrongs.

I think he'd regret not making a choice, because in the end this happened because he wouldn't directly choose who to comfort and help. He tried to help both and ended up doing nothing for either and letting Jimmy fuck them all over. In this scenario/au he's thinking about all the times he let Jimmy inadvertently make his choice, and how he chose to let it happen. He regrets all of it and would be so bitter that he was giving his choice up for so long. He chose wrong and it affected everyone. The only thing he'd find cathartic is the fucked up truth it will never happen again, not with Jimmy at least.

But he's not happy he's getting joy from that. I think it's a point not a single character other than Jimmy is depicted at deriving joy from another's pain. Even Swansea is being more sarcastic when he cheers on Curly about crashing the ship and ending his sobriety. He's happy Jimmy was forced to take responsibility, but this? He wanted him to learn a lesson and do something with himself, this is hollow in a way it's just embittering. Jimmy didn't get what he wanted, he can be happy about that but no one else did. This isn't justice or closure for Anya, he's stuck in a place he was so desperate to leave with even more pressure on his shoulders. Daisuke is just a kid and Swansea doesn't deserve this after all his year making himself a better man.

Like in his sections, Curly is preoccupied thinking about all the responsibilities he has, taking on things he shouldn't have to and trying to keep the peace when he doesn't have peace in his own mind.

the end of ck is like, if you are a protagonist whose main character arc is being haunted by your dead brother and your friend has just recently developed powers allowing her to raise people from the dead, is it really a coincidence or is it just the doomed narrative coming for you?

​essentially, in this AU (which I am officially dubbing the Horse Boy Stan AU bc I find that funny), the McGuckets are sort of werehorses.

(that's what Stan dubs them, bc Stan asks them what they call themselves, and they just sort of shrug)

but instead of full moons, they transform the day before, day of, and day after equinoxes and solstices. they are forced into horse form dawn of the day before, and can return to human at dusk the day after. so for essentially three straight days, they're stuck in horse form. outside of this time, they are able to switch between horse and human form at will. once they get some practice with it, of course!

they are werehorses because, generations ago, when the McGuckets still lived in Ireland, a McGucket successfully rode a kelpie without being bucked off or drowned. this won the kelpie over, who married the McGucket and granted the McGucket bloodline a "gift": the ability to transform into horses. they're forced into horse form around equinoxes and solstices bc during those times, the barrier between the mortal realm and the fae realm is thin, and magic is stronger.

Stan can transform bc he rides a McGucket and doesn't get bucked off. during his homeless days, his car breaks down while he's being chased by the cops. he leaves the car and runs on foot, eventually coming across the McGucket horse ranch.

(the McGuckets have a horse ranch instead of a farm, bc, well, they have a connection with horses.)

at the ranch, he sees a horse just sort of chilling, not in a paddock, and watching him without any fear, just curiosity. I tend to headcanon that Stan is afraid of horses, but in this moment, he's more afraid of bullets than horses. so he climbs on the horse and manages to get it to take him to a nearby forest, where he waits out the cops. then he rides the horse back to his car. the horse, who was constantly trying to buck Stan off and even trying to bite him, to no avail, slams its hooves on the hood of the car and then kicks it for good measure before running away.

a few hours later, at dusk, Stan turns into a horse himself. because the horse wasn't a regular horse, it was Angie McGucket, who was just chilling in horse form as she is wont to do.

This remains one of my favourite Traumerei moments and overall moves to date and it still makes me mad that despite this very scene I had to endure weeks of Traumerei slander about the existence of said tournament and how stupid Traumerei was for throwing it while the arc was ongoing💀

Traumerei canonically thought it was childish nonsense and immediately concocted a nearly fool-proof murder plot for every single participant other than his intended winners before it could even officially commence and yet still got blamed for SIU's choice to include it as a plot-point in the first place 😭

90% of Traumerei slander seems based on his role in the narrative as a seemingly immovable obstacle (that ultimately will have to be removed nonetheless of course) and the necessary pitfalls that come with it rather than his specific character as demonstrated in the story, and turning said necessary pitfalls into a personal failing of Traumerei's even while Traumerei himself is actively working against them and constantly choosing the most ruthless and direct options possible (as opposed to Gustang, who gets his wins handed to him by necessity of his narrative role, regardless of level of actually demonstrated ingenuity or intelligence, except no one cares about it in his case, and you can quote me on that!).

It's frustrating because despite of this limitation I think SIU is doing a wonderful job of making Traumerei competent and intimidating whenever he's actually motivated to act, in ways that don't even rely on throwing the most shinsu around. Independent from whatever shenangians him and Zahard got up to back in the day, Traumerei started severly from the backfoot against Gustang in their present day conflict, who had millennia to plan and move basically unimpeded in the current matter, all the way back to preserving Enryu's Thorn and the inner Floor of Death to contain it. And despite this, he scores plenty of surprises and small to large scale wins against Gustang (the most lackluster aspect associatable with him are the independent moves and performances of the Branch Heads, whom Traumerei canonically never cared about and considered pathetic, so🤷‍♀️)!

But fandom at large often seems to ignore or downplay that to hell and back to hype Gustang and his nonexistent feats instead.

draculette's fate is actually up in the air right now haha - she was originally a one-off character from a planned chapter where she acts as octavia's rival and seduces onion, but i doubt she'll stay around as that chapter as it was planned doesn't really fit in well with the rest of reassass in terms of tone and characterisation. i might redesign her and try to fit her in somewhere though, but i can't confirm anything ^_^

No spoilers but I’m writing the next Too Close chapter rn and a Tangent has developed. And now I’m debating the order of events again. Because any time something goes wrong Siffrin’s like ‘oops I should probably start over-’ and the brain-fam goes ‘um UM DO NOT-’

Because even tho I’m characterizing them as not the MOST concerned about the Tears as mechanisms for self-destruction (ie they don’t actually consider Siffrin freezing himself as anything but a vaguely unfortunate utility he can use)….they still find it concerning how quick he is to cut his losses over social blunders

Because Siffrin’s whole thing is ‘outwardly chill but internally insecure’ so everyone hearing his thoughts is shattering that perception into a million pieces. Which honestly happened pretty thoroughly in the FIRST chapter!! But it keeps happening!!! And they’re realizing this isn’t a simple thing to solve it is in fact a RABBIT HOLE
