any advice for writing characters who are very unlike myself? I've realised that in order to have a cast of interesting people I need to create characters that I don't relate to or sympathise with at all... but how do i get into their heads enough to write them in that case?
Getting to Know Different Types of People
Sadly, like most things writing-related, there are no quick tricks for getting into the heads of people who are different from you. Also like most things writing-related, it's something that takes time, effort, and research.
Here are some suggestions:
-- read short stories (many are available free online) -- read books, magazine articles, comic books, graphic novels -- read biographies and autobiographies -- watch TV shows, movies, reality TV, plays, and musicals -- watch documentaries about particular people -- play video games with lots of character development -- spend time people watching -- spend time talking to people you know -- read personal stories on the various "Humans of..." sites like HONY -- check out Story Corps, and Real Life Stories on Reader's Digest -- listen to This American Life, snap Judgment, Lives Less Ordinary and Conversations
Happy researching!

Interview with Mad Rupert, author of Sakana
September 2023
Sakana, the story of life and love in a fish market, is coming back from its hiatus soon! The strip comic style webcomic began in 2010 and follows Jiro, Taisei, Yuudai, and Chie as they navigate their relationships and learn to face their feelings. We asked creator Mad Rupert, author of Robber Robert and artist of Bunt!, for an interview to celebrate the series return.
Read Sakana | Shop books & merch | Read more Hiveworks comics
Sakana has been your baby for 13 years. What has the webcomic journey been like for you over the past decade?
It really has been over a decade, hasn’t it! There have certainly been ups and downs, periods where I was updating as much as I could, and also long hiatuses. I feel like webcomics have always been an amazing space to practice my craft and stretch my writing and drawing skills alike. You can kind of do anything you like with webcomics, and oftentimes people come up with wackier, and imho more interesting concepts than if they were beholden to a large publisher. Not that I haven’t made my fair share of traditionally-published comics and graphic novels… but there’s just something so gratifying about coming up with your own wild story and working towards its end on your own time. Webcomics are incredibly tough and time consuming, but also the ultimate form of self expression.
What is the origin of Sakana? What made you want to tell this story?
Sakana actually started as a class project when I was a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I had been accepted into the Sequential Art department’s yearly Japan trip to study comics and cartooning in Tokyo for a few weeks, and our final project was to create 11 comic strips based off of something that made a strong impact on us during the trip. We had visited the old inner market (now demolished) of the Tsukiji Fish Market at 4am one morning, and it was the most incredible place I’d ever been, so I decided to craft a short story that took place in the market. Beyond the first 11 strips, I decided to continue the story for as long as I could as a way to practice the comic techniques I was learning in class. That was over a decade and 600 strips ago! It really has become the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken.
Do you have the ending already written? Do you see a conclusion in sight?
Yes! I’ve always had something at least resembling an end in mind throughout most of the comic’s lifespan. For a long-format comic like SAKANA, I think it’s very important to have a rough ending planned out as early as possible, otherwise it becomes difficult to keep the narrative moving in a satisfying direction, drop little tidbits of plot that will pay off later, or even maintain your enthusiasm for the project. To be clear, the details of Sakana's “end” have changed many times, which is only natural with a very long project like this. But I’ve always kept crucial details the same: basically certain characters in a certain place at a certain time doing certain things (to keep from getting too spoilery haha.) HOW they get there, WHY they’re there, and WHAT exactly they’re doing will ebb and flow as the years go by and I myself get older and older. But having a general sense of the end in mind has kept things moving all this time. The story’s got one more volume to go, and then I’ll be done!
Your hiatus is a result of working on a traditionally published graphic novel, coming in 2024. Is there anything you can tell us about your book?
My new graphic novel is called Bunt! and it’s a collaborative effort between myself and my dear pal, Ngozi Ukazu (author of popular webcomic Check, Please!) Ngozi wrote the book and I drew it, and we’re both really proud of what we’ve made! It’s already available for preorder all over the place and it will officially be out in stores in February 2024. We’re really looking forward to getting out there this fall and winter and spreading the word about it!
You recently successfully completed a Kickstarter for an 18+ comic, Robber Robert, as well. What is it like balancing these different narratives, genres, and mediums of publishing comics?
It’s definitely been a struggle at times to balance everything, and I definitely don’t recommend working on 3 giant projects at the same time! I finally had to admit that I couldn’t do it all at once, which led to me putting Sakana and RR on hiatus to finish Bunt!, and then keeping Sakana on hiatus while I finished up RR. I really burned myself out on comics for a while, and it’s been a huge struggle to get myself back to a good place with my work. Finishing Bunt! and RR Chapter 1 has really helped reenergize me, but I can always feel myself trying to overload my work schedule again and again. It’s my greatest weakness as a professional artist.
What keeps you inspired?
Making something for myself, practicing my craft, and putting my own stories out there are all huge driving forces in my life. Learning to stop overwhelming myself with work has also helped a lot. Looking back on all the art I’ve made and all the different things I’ve tried makes me feel like I can do anything I put my mind to, so long as I give myself the time and space to enjoy the process.
Do you have any webcomic or graphic novel recommendations?
I’m a big fan of anything fantasy or sci-fi, especially if the narrative approaches the fantastical elements in a weird, unique, and kind of gay way haha. My favorite manga is currently Delicious in Dungeon, but I’m also a fan of historical series like Golden Kamuy and Bride’s Story. For webcomics, I love anything by Evan Dahm, like his long-format series Rice Boy and Vattu. As for Hiveworks comics, there’s too many to list individually but my current favorites are Fairmeadow by KP, and Tiger, Tiger by Petra Nordlund.
Any advice for new readers of Sakana?
I would say…despite its high page count, it’s not that long of a read! The strip format keeps it moving at a pretty quick clip when read all at once (but it certainly didn’t feel like that over the last 13 years updating one page at a time!) I know that the format and the black and white rendering might feel a little dated in the current era of Webtoons and full-color stories, but I’m too stubborn to change now, and I really appreciate anybody giving it a shot! Also, no matter who you are, or how much you dislike him in the beginning, Yuudai will probably be your favorite character.
You can read Sakana for free at sakana-comic.com and print books are available at hivemill.com

what is the ideal reading order for the lunar chronicles? I know it goes cinder, scarlet, cress, and winter, but the other additional material confuses me
Fairest - Read between Cress and Winter. I always rec it because this novella introduces a ton of previously unavailable information that the main books will not cover, but that makes the entire reading experience of the final book so much better. Required imo.
W&N 1 and 2 - Read after Winter. It's 2 graphic novels that take place a year after the events of book 1. Not required imo.
Stars Above - Read after W&N 1 and 2. A short story compilation. Some take place before the series, some during, some after, and they are not set in a chronological order. You can try reading it in order, but honestly there is no need as the stories aren't connected to each other. Not required imo, but even if you decide to skip it please read The Princess and the Guard bc that is my fav story and it is so friggin good and I reread it every few months for self care.
Everything else - After everything else. Non-canon stories that MM published for various occassions on her website or as ebooks. There is a ton of deleted scenes, a quarantene story, and a choose-your-own-adventure story. These are fun to read because there's always something so cute about these chwractrrs interacting with each other (ty MM).
Happy reading, hope you enjoy!!

Joel fortunately is okay. He told you by phone, you unfortunately had to go back home or your mother might have suspected something. In the meantime, during these three weeks, you received an e-mail saying that your application was accepted at the library as a library worker. The interview took place in a historically decorated room with two staff members who asked you a lot of questions, such as your interests in the field, what you aspire to in life, whether you know what you're going to do, they asked you how many languages you speak, in short, questions to try to test your preparedness and interest. You got up from that chair satisfied and the heat rising to your cheeks with excitement. You hope to be called, you really want to.
You tell Joel about what you have seen, done, your emotions, your feelings, he listens to you, asks you questions and is once again interested in you, your future, your dreams. In addition, you tell him that you' ve been inspired to continue to write your story.
"This time I will hold you in my arms as I watch you write, I promise," he tells you.
You smile, "Being in your arms always gives me great security, you know."
You hear him sigh, "Honey, I wanted to propose something to you, for Friday."
"What?" you ask him.
"I'd like to take you somewhere," he replies in a mysterious tone making you very curious.
"Where?" you ask him hoping he will tell you.
"I'll see you on Thursday for class and then I hope you'll say yes for Friday." he resumes.
"Whatever it is, it's fine," you reply, "You know I trust you."
"I know," you hear him sigh "Where are you?"
"In my room, I'm already in bed-I haven't had dinner, I'm not hungry," you reply.
"Why?"
"Nothing. . . I was thinking about you," you answer him in a whisper. "I wish it was already Wednesday night," you confide to him.
You hear him smile, "I know, I wish that too."
"How are you?" you ask him.
"Stitches are pulling a little, but no big deal, baby. Besides, now that I hear you, it's so much better." you smile "Would you like to try something together now?" he asks, you furrow your brow.
From a distance?
"Tell me." you invite him to continue intrigued by his proposal.
"Imagine me there with you now," and you don't struggle to imagine him in your room, you don't struggle to think of him lying on his side next to you, kissing you softly and telling you how beautiful and perfect you are for him, you shudder "can you think of me there with you?" his voice is so warm and husky.
You close your eyes and for a moment you can almost feel his hands cupping your face gently, your breath getting shorter, "Yes." you reply intrigued and at the same time holding your breath.
"Now, touch yourself, touch your breasts the way you'd like me to touch you," you gasp realizing what you're doing together, you've never done it before, but you've heard about it and doing it with him turns you on like crazy.
You touch yourself exactly as he does in that firm but gentle way. Your breath breaks. "Gently." he says in a husky tone of voice that causes you to shiver.
You do what he says, you close your eyes surrendering to his voice and the sensations you are experiencing.
"Now open your legs." he orders and you execute "How you feel?"
You gasp, you don't know how to feel, you don't know what to do, but you wish he was here with you, on the top of you kissing you all over.
"Joel. . . I wish you were here." you gasp.
"I am. Now reach down with your hand and touch yourself there." you hear noises on the other side of the phone, you can't help but wonder if he's touching himself too, you wonder what he's like, you clench your bottom lip between your teeth moaning just at the thought "I can almost feel your soft breasts in my hands, it drives me crazy. . ." he says after a while "I can even see the expression on your face, oh shit..." you swallow imagining that he's giving himself pleasure right now "Are you wet?" he asks.
"Yes." you answer shakily, "J - Joel..." you moan sliding two fingers inside you, you tighten your lips feeling your walls contract around your fingers, your breath gets shorter and shorter, shivers ripple your skin, "Joel... I ... it's so good ... I wish you were here."
"I'm with you." he replies, "I'm touching you there, baby." his breath is panting, you imagine him lying there, touching himself, you imagine him with his face tense, his jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed "Stick a second finger inside you."
"I'm doing it," you reply in an even more trembling tone, you are close to the edge, "Really? Then stick another finger in," you hear him with shortness of breath. You do as he says, "Oh God, Joel... I..." your shivers are getting stronger and stronger "I'm going to... I'm... Joel... oh, God." you groan louder closing your eyes and folding your legs, it was the strongest climax you have ever felt up to that moment.
You don't talk for a couple of minutes, just listen to your heavy breathing. You wonder if he came too, what he looks like when he comes, the look on his face now, what he would have told you to do, what he would have said to you.
"Joel?"
"Sweetheart,"
"I..." love you "I want you with all my being." you tell him, you hear him sigh, as you sit in the middle of the bed still shaken from your climax, "I know it's the same for you too."
"You right." he admits, "I want to hold you tight to me as I make you come, I want to see the look on your face, I want to feel you clench around me and scream my name." you feel wet again just thinking about it and the image of you underneath him sinking inside you, you're short of breath again just thinking about it.
"Joel..." you don't know what to say.
"Don't say anything. Maybe I had not to. . ."
"Joel," you say "don't be sorry, I liked that." you quickly reassure him fearing that he is about to apologize for what the two of you shared a few moments ago "You know, I've been thinking about what you told me about the contest." you tell him changing completely the subject "I don't think I can sign up, Seattle is so far away. . too far away from you."
You hear him breathing heavily, "You don't have to be afraid, you know? Going away doesn't mean forgetting."
"I remembered the quote differently." you point out "Going away means forgetting." you quote "And I don't want to forget or leave you." you add feeling a knot in your throat.
"Honey, I. . ."
"I can't wait for tomorrow!" you exclaim, "Then you'll tell me where you're going to take me, right?" you ask him, changing the subject again. You hear him sigh, "Is that a yes?"
"No." he answers you dryly "'s a surprise and I don't like to reveal it ahead of time." he explains.
You fall asleep thinking about him, about this mysterious surprise, about his words. You dream of leaving, of leaving your city, but of doing it with him. Even in your dreams you cannot think of a future without him. He has become too important to you.
The excitment spreads through your body, you begin to see stars as you feel the climax already mount inside you.
It's Thursday. You are wearing a slightly less warm jacket, heading for the Miller house. When he opens the door, you pounce on him, kissing him and feeling yourself immediately enveloped by his strong scent and his muscular arms closing around you in a pleasant grip. The two of you barely make it to his couch as you slowly undress each other between kisses. His scent of coffee, cologne and wood envelops your senses. You lie on your back as he kisses your neck and collarbones. He gently wraps your breasts in his hands in a languid caress before rolling gently your nipples between thumb and forefinger, his caresses break your breath each time. Your breath becomes even shorter when he takes one nipple in his mouth and sucks it and caresses it gently with his lips and tongue, you slip your hands into his hair closing your eyes when he moves to the other nipple with a pop.
"You're fucking perfect," he tells you while you open your eyes, you see him descend lower and lower leaving a trail of wet kisses, opening your legs as your eyes open wide for the surprise and the growing arousal.
"What you doing?" you ask him breathlessly as he pulls off your briefs.
"I want to try something new," he replies by giving you kisses in your inner thigh, you close your eyes for a moment savoring the soft contact of his lips and the rough contact of his beard, then you lean back on your elbows to observe what he does "If it bothers you, tell me, I stop."
When you realize what he's about to do, you open your eyes even wider and your breath stops, his kisses are getting closer and closer there to your womanhood, then you feel his tongue licks very slowly along your slit, "Fuck..." you gasp closing your eyes and leaning your head back on the sofa cushion.
Joel takes this as a sign that he can continue, you feel his fingers open you to him and his tongue poking between your folds, you squeeze your eyes tightly lost in that sea of pleasure he is giving you, you moan shamelessly surrendering yourself completely to the renewed pleasure he is giving you.
Then, his tongue hits that little bundle of nerves making you see stars behind your eyelids.
"Mmmh, mmh..." you groan unable to say anything else, you open your mouth gasping , you hear him moaning against you, and his hot breath against your intimacy sends more bursts of pleasure.
"You're so good, I'd stay like this forever," he tells you, you open your eyes and seeing him there between your legs giving you pleasure is an even more erotic feeling, your heart beats faster and faster, "You're so wet." he tells you alternating small hits with deeper licks.
"J - Joel... I - I..." you can no longer formulate a coherent thought.
"Let go, baby, I know you want it, let go," he tells you as he alternates his tongue with his fingers.
You tilt your head back closing your eyes and let out a long resounding moan as you feel your climax explode violently.
He continues to caress you even as your climax wanes, when you open your eyes, you see him intent on watching you and only then you notice your release on his beard and it's such a sensual sight, you tilt your head back again feeling your breathing still erratic.
"Joel... fuck, I..." you can't express your thoughts about it yet, it was beautiful, overwhelming, too much. You feel him move and when you open your eyes he is on you again, cupping your cheek, while with the other he keeps to the side of your head so as not to burden you too much.
"How are you feeling?" he asks you.
"W - well, it's..." you take a long breath "I don't know what to say." it's the only thing you are able to say, he smiles at you and you return his smile and then lean toward him and kiss him. It's a slow kiss, different from the ones you gave each other when you entered his house.
"We should have played." he says, smiling at you.
You giggle, "I'm naked, you just made me come, you're half-naked and you think about music?"
"Well, you right." he retorts by giving you a kiss on the tip of your nose making you close your eyes "You have other talents besides music." he adds making you open your eyes and look at you with a sweet expression.
He caresses your forehead which, only at that moment, you realize is covered with a light layer of sweat, caresses one cheek and places a light kiss on your lips. You decide to interrupt that cuddling moment, you want to think about him, you just want him to be as good as you are. This time, you are the one who will not take no for an answer.
You move to the side putting a hand on his bare chest and make him move making him lie down, you sit up, "Where are you going?" he asks thinking you were getting up. You don't answer, you lean toward him kissing him and then with your hands you go down his abdomen, then you look at him "If you don't want to, you don't have to..." he makes to say, but you interrupt him by kissing him on the lips again.
"Shut up and tell me what to do," you tell him, looking into his hazel eyes and you see his eyes become even darker, you settle between his legs, open his belt and then unbutton his pants, as you make these gestures you look for his eyes. You see his tense but at the same time yearning expression. He swallows and nods as if to reassure you that you are not doing wrong. He lifts his pelvis helping you take his pants off, he remains in boxers and his arousal is huge, you open your eyes wide in disbelief.
"It's not gonna fit," you comment in a breathy voice.
"It will, don't be afraid." he tells you noticing your expression.
"I'm not," you tell him, fear no, but concern yes. He sits up kissing you on the lips making a hand wander from your cheek until he slips it into your hair as if to reassure you, then he goes back to lying down and helps you take his boxers off and, if covered his erection seemed big to you, it's even bigger now. He's big, you swallow, you're fascinated by the veins running through him and the round pinkish glans. "May I?" you ask without being able to stop looking at his cock.
"Yes." he answers you, holding his breath as you grip him with your hand. He's hard, but at the same time soft, you find yourself swallowing, you can't wrap him completely, then he wraps your hand in his and moves it up and down, "Like this," he whines and when he has figured out that you have figured it out how to give him pleasure, he lets go to your hand and surrenders to your rhythmic caress.
You don't know whether it's more erotic to clench his intimacy in your fist or whether it's more so his tense expression, his clenched jaw, his lips parted, his eyes closed, his heavy breathing that breaks as you reach the tip and return to the hilt, "Am I doing it right?" you ask him noticing a light layer of sweat on his forehead.
"Yeah. . . 's fine," he replies breathlessly "You're fucking perfect." he adds opening his eyes and looking at you focused on him, "You're a natural." he comments closing his eyes.
"This?" you ask him, alluding to the scrotum, you know what it is, but you don't know whether touching it's pleasant or bothersome.
"You can touch it if you want," he replies looking into your eyes through almost clenched teeth.
"And does it feel you good?" you ask him, he nods clenching his jaw again and closing his eyes, you resume to stroke him and he in response makes an almost animalistic sound "Did I hurt you?"
"No, go on, go on." he answers you, at that moment you notice a drop of transparent and viscous fluid leaking from his glans, you swallow, you don't know if you'll do well, but you run your hand over him and he almost jumps opening his eyes suddenly "Fuck. . ."
"Hurt?" you ask him spreading that liquid along his shaft.
He reaches out to your breast, squeezes it gently, while you gasp, closing your eyes for a moment. His large, warm hand gently caresses first one breast and then the other, at the same time you continue your stroking movements.
"No, you're. . ." he swallows exhaling noisily through his nostrils as you continue pumping alternating between a slower and a faster gesture until he opens his eyes and exclaims "Stop!" this exclamation leaves you dumbfounded "Stop." he repeats in a peremptory tone and you stop immediately, "Lie down." he tells you making you lie down almost abruptly.
"Did I do something wrong?" you ask him worried that you hurt him.
"No, I want to come on you." you'd be blushed at another time if you had heard him talk that way, but not now, not with him towering over you as he pleasures himself with quick movements, "Hold still like that, honey." he tells you as he continues to touch himself and groaning and moaning uncontrollably. The image of him on top of you, his fist pumping his cock, his moans getting louder and louder send you into ecstasy, then a whitish hot liquid leaks out of his tip and squirts onto your belly. He lets out an animalistic cry as he closes his eyes, then all is silent. There is only his erratic breathing and you staring at him with lust-filled eyes and observing the pitiful state he is in now.
After a while he opens his eyes and looks you in the eye, "Hold on, honey, I'll go get you a towel," he says getting to his feet and moving away from you. You wait for him without being able to stop looking at what he has left on you, you never thought that you could make him come.
He lays the washcloth on your belly helping you clean yourself, then adds, "If you want, you can take a shower." you still nod wordlessly. When you are completely clean, you get up and throw the washcloth away, look at him and find him staring at you. You never thought you'd see him naked or you'd have been able to stand in his presence completely naked, you thought you'd feel uncomfortable or that you'd run to cover yourself right away, but instead. . .
He comes up to you wrapping his arm around you at waist level bringing you closer to him and kissing you deeply, "We can shower together" he says kissing you softly making you smile.
You remember when you first thought that you would want Joel with you in the shower, nothing had happened between the two of you yet, but you already wanted him. You didn't imagine what it would really be like, you only had an idea, a vague and imprecise idea.
You brought things with you to play, but you don't play.
You live.
The next day, you are back at his place, he is waiting for you outside his house. He smiles at you, gives you a little hug, he's afraid that someone might see you and therefore get you into trouble. Then, you get into his SUV and drive off. You can't stop looking at him, you smile at him, you are happy. He too returns the look and the smile by intertwining his hand with yours and gently kissing the back of your hand. You don't know where you are going, but you don't care, you are with him: wherever will be fine.
Joel drives for what to you seems only a few minutes, slowly leaving the city and turning onto a gravel road, the vegetation is thicker there. You look puzzled at the driver, who nevertheless watches the road carefully; you look ahead again, trying to figure out where you are going. It is not the cabin, but where. . .?
When he stops, before your eyes there's a hill overlooking the Lake, you open your lips and eyes wide, then you look toward Joel who is watching you with smiling eyes, you go back to look toward the Lake surrounded by trees of many pastel colors. You are breathless.
You look at Joel with bright eyes, remembering when you told him what you had never done, and on your bucket list there was actually going to the Lake. The water is barely rippled by the wind, but the thing that fascinates you most moving from the cobblestone road is climbing the two sheer steel ramps that pass through the woods. You place your hands on the balustrade and enjoy the sight of it all.
The man next to you follows you silently, says nothing, just watches you. His eyes are shining, a light illuminating his face too. Joel's heart is full of joy at knowing you are happy, at seeing your eyes full of light, he would like to see you always like this.
Perhaps it is a foolish hope, but it is what he hopes for you.
You turn to him in a long silent smile.
You don't know what to say, he has left you completely speechless and breathless. You look at him spellbound, his hazel eyes in that light seem to be the color of honey, his gently windswept hair is a messy cluster of dark curls, his lips curved upward.

"I love you." you tell him before you think about. But those three words came out of your heart after all you've been through together, after all your first times together, after he brought you to this place.

Would you mind doing a character analysis of Toby? This guy has so many layers and it’s driving me crazy-
Toby Billings analysis for the anon!! Also you don't have to anon!!!
Please I want to know who the Toby fan is, of the few people I know of who know him, a lot of people misinterpret him...
Thanks for asking about him!!! He's my favourite little guy!
THIS IS USING THE ORIGINAL BOOKS! NOT THE GRAPHIC NOVELS! THEY CHANGED HIS PERSONALITY AND PARTS OF THE STORY IN THE GRAPHIC NOVELS! PLEASE READ THE CANON STORY, NOT JUST THE GRAPHIC NOVELS!!!
⚠️TW: Mentions of SH and Suic!de (Canon to the story)⚠️
Basic info:
- Youngest of two
- Competitive (For a reason)
- Loves Arcade Games
- Constantly second to his older brother
- Friends with Reggie (we love Reggie on this blog)
- Occasionally has something in his mouth (toothpick)
- Nickname "Tobes" from Connor
- Bullied by his brother, blatantly
- Short fuse (also for a reason)
- Ignored by is dad unless he does something wrong.
- Not super good at school
- Basically ignored by teachers because he never lived up to his brother's shadow (kinda ironic)
- Tabitha? Was she meant to be a love interest? Not done well.
- Does not want therapy
- High School
- No friends anymore
- Nightmares :(
Ok so I clearly have a favourite because I analysed him a lot more in depth but also he's such a character. Just his basic stuff is pretty bad tbh. Lots of isolation and bullying in his own home. Doesn't seem to want help, or know how to ask for it. Does allow Tabitha to help but clearly dislikes it. The short fuse definitely comes from him watching his brother throw tantrums when he didn't win, and growing up in that household, he probably picked that up. There's a lot of issues there.
- Self image issues
- Low self esteem
- Basically abused/neglected
- Barely hesitates to harm himself to get rid of the rabbit
- Seems to go into a bit of a depressive state after Shadow Bonnie is sewn into him
- (⚠️TW⚠️)Is completely willing to scratch off his skin, and almost drown himself to get rid of the shadow
- Literally makes a list of how to get rid of it and the only thing he refused to do is to burn it off
- Cannot eat because of Shadow Bonnie
- Refuses to let Connor win, even when he tries to call off the competition
- Cracks his knuckles when he's nervous
- Doesn't trust people
- He isolated himself (which is his opinion, from other clues in the book, I feel like it was mutual)
- (⚠️TW⚠️) Literally kills himself to win
Oh boy. So a few little personality quirks, cute. But also omg the poor kid. He's very much hurt at home, no one cares. Isolates himself, but it is also probably a self preservation technique because he was definitely in some type of abuse/neglect situation. His willingness to hurt and kill himself shows a lot of underlying issues he most likely was already going through and Shadow Bonnie just brought it to a head. He suffers a lot of physical and mental trauma throughout the book and relates it back to previous trauma from before the incident.
- Mother left when he was around 5
Woo mother issues. We actually get a heck in on her in The Breaking Wheel where she is Reed and Julius's robotics teacher. She seems like she may have some mental health issues herself, with how she acts and treats them, which may explain why Toby had some underlying issues.
- Honorable mention that Reggie likes Tabitha
Toby is just a little guy and I want him to have a happy home life and I want him to be happy. He's such a guy. Scott really did him dirty tbh. But he's also a well developed character with a lot of layers and mental illness.
Tried to keep any AU and fanfiction stuff out of this.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Ranking The Stranger Things Tie-Ins:
Now that I've finished the reviews (for the time being), I wanted to do a ranking of all the tie-in comics, graphic novels, and books. Originally, I was just going to do a Top 5 Best and Worst List, but I figured it would be more fun to make a complete list of all the tie-ins while also giving my brief thoughts on each one (especially for those who don't want to read my lengthy reviews). Please note this is all in good fun and just my personal opinion, which can be subjected to change.
Also, this list will NOT include any of the show's episodes, video games, tabletop games, children's tie-in books, the Choose Your Own Adventure book, the Stranger Things Experience, or the stage play The First Shadow.
With that out of the way, let's begin in order from Worst to Best:
#26: Stranger Things Summer Special (See Review Here)
I never cared for Powell and Callahan as characters. They barely have anything to do with the show's main arc, they're NOT funny, and the "bumbling cop" trope is something I've grown tired of in recent years.
The premise of this short, where both of them are conveniently present at key events during season 3 in their lousy pursuit of being "good cops," all the while having constant near-misses with the Upside Down, the Flayed, and the Meat Flayer, is a repetitive joke that quickly grows old. That's not even getting into the huge continuity errors plaguing the short and creating a bunch of plot-holes. Completely unnecessary. Hard pass.
#25: Stranger Things The Bully (See Review Here)
This only ranks slightly higher than Summer Special because I like the artwork better, and it doesn't mess up the show's continuity like the previous comic did. However, that's all this really has going for it.
For whatever reason, they decided to make an entire graphic novel focusing on Troy and James (the bullies from season 1), and all I could think about while reading it is "This is a huge waste of time." I already didn't like Troy to begin with, this comic does NOTHING to improve my opinion of him, and considering that neither James nor Troy have appeared on the show since (and probably aren't coming back for season 5), I don't see what the point of this story was. This paragraph from my review sums it up best:
#24: Stranger Things x TMNT Crossover (See Review Here)
I'm sure there are fans who enjoyed this bizarre trip while embracing its absurdness and surrealism, but I am not one of them. I like TMNT and I like Stranger Things, but I draw the line at saying both properties exist in the same universe. That's not even getting into the haphazard attempts by the writers to make this comic canon with the show. Knowing the Duffer Brothers, that's likely not going to happen.
#23: Stranger Things Tales From Hawkins (See Review Here)
The idea of doing an anthology comic focusing on Hawkins residents was intriguing, but the end result was disappointing. They should have broadened their horizons regarding which characters to focus on, and not just set the stories exclusively in the first 2 seasons.
Murray's story (Issue #2) and the Pumpkin Patch Rivalry (Issue #4) are arguably the best ones. The rest are either forgettable or derivative.
#22: Stranger Things Six (See Review Here)
My first venture into Stranger Things comics. I've come a long way since then! :)
I remember looking forward to this particular comic to learn more about Hawkins Lab, Dr. Brenner, Project MKUltra, and the special kids............only to feel underwhelmed when I actually read it. I wanted to like Francine/Six, but I didn't find her interesting or compelling as a character, and the attempts to include other aspects of the show's lore (i.e. The Upside Down, Terry Ives, El and Kali, etc) felt shoehorned. Combined with the direction season 4 went, and it's a safe bet to say this comic is NOT canon (if it ever was).
#21: Stranger Things Suspicious Minds (See Review Here)
Suspicious Minds ranks slightly higher that Six for doing a better job fleshing out the experiments that were taking place at Hawkins Lab, as well as giving more details about Kali, Terry Ives, the test subjects, and El's biological father Andrew. It helps that Brenner is a threatening presence in this book, and that the narrative excels in maintaining suspense.
However, similar to Six, the events of season 4 render most of this book non-canon. That's not even getting into a major continuity error regarding El's date of birth that sticks out like a sore thumb.
Suspicious Minds serves as a cautionary reminder that if you're a creator and you've planned out a major twist for your show, then you either need to have a direct hands-on approach to how tie-ins are written and approved, or you need to be willing to share that twist with those you've hired to write tie-ins for the universe you're managing.
In any case, it is PAINFULLY CLEAR the Duffer Brothers didn't share information about Henry/One/Vecna with Gwenda Bond when she worte this book (or Paul Dichter for that matter when he helped oversee its development), and boy does it show in the final product. 😖
#20: Stranger Things Kamchatka (See Review Here)
Another example of a comic where the premise sounds intriguing, but they squander it on characters who aren't going to play a role on the show while also giving very little (and in some cases, contradictory) information about the show's lore.
While I liked the darker tone, the Cold War setting, and the spy thriller aspects, the characters didn't do much to impress me, and I was also frustrated by the lack of canon characters (Hopper, Dmitiri, Yuri, etc) who could have been in this comic and weren't. It's not bad, but it is mediocre when it didn't need to be.
#19: Stranger Things Into The Fire (See Review Here)
A sequel that improves on its predecessor (Stranger Things Six). While the comic likely isn't canon for the same reasons Six isn't, I appreciated the personal stakes this time around, I loved the creepy gothic aesthetic they did with Jamie/Nine's hallucinations, and it was nice to see Kali utilized in this story in a meaningful way. Here's hoping the Duffer Brothers wise up and bring Kali back for season 5 because she deserves so much better!
#18: Stranger Things Creature Feature (See Review Here)
One aspect of Season 4 that was disappointing was how little we got to see of the family dynamic with El and the Byers once they moved. It's hinted at, but not explored deeply. Creature Feature dives a little more into that, as well as El's struggles with PTSD, and gives a nice heartwarming scene between El, Jonathan, and Will towards the end that makes the short stand out.
However, the one-shot comic is sadly brief, and it may leave people frustrated about why they didn't go for a longer comic/graphic novel about El and the Byers adjusting to life in Lenora. I would've been interested in seeing that!
#17: Stranger Things The Game Master (See Review Here)
A one-shot comic where we get to see Steve and Nancy back together after the events of season 1 while also getting a surprisingly sweet interaction between Steve and Mike that isn't them griping with one another. I don't care much for Steve and Nancy's relationship, but I did like their attempts to help Mike feel better after El's apparent death. That was enough to elevate this short.
#16: Stranger Things Erica's Quest (See Review Here)
Not a fan of the artwork, but I was happy to witness the Scoop's Troop back together again. I also love how this short confirms Steve has played D&D before, which gives context to that scene in S4 when Dustin calls Steve asking him to be a substitute player in Eddie's D&D campaign.
#15: Stranger Things The Voyage (See Review Here)
Major improvement on Stranger Things Kamchatka. It's highly doubtful the show will include any mention of this comic (though if the Duffer Brothers decide to bring back the Russian arc for S5, I hope they incorporate Dr. Karine as the main antagonist), but the story is scary, suspenseful, and has the kind of gruesomeness you'd expect from an R-Rated horror film.
#14: Stranger Things Darkness On The Edge Of Town (See Reviews Here)
Having grown up reading a lot of murder mysteries, I have a soft spot for the genre. Hearing that Hopper's backstory involved him tracking down a deranged serial killer in New York City back in the 70s while also dealing with a dangerous cult was enough to get me on board with this book.
This novel isn't perfect, but it makes up for its shortcomings in creative ways. Hopper's backstory with the NYPD is fascinating, the story's focus on issues related to poverty, crime, mental health, law enforcement, and societal woes works well (even if they drop the ball towards the end), Hopper's interactions with El in the present are a highlight, and the narrative is effective in keeping the reader invested.
#13: Stranger Things Erica The Great (See Review Here)
A light-hearted graphic novel that bridges Erica's arc between seasons 3 and 4 while expanding on her growth as a character and development as a D&D play. It was cool seeing Erica's friends get their day in the limelight (one of whom might be making an appearance in S5), and the story has enough funny moments to keep the reader entertained.
#12: Stranger Things Flight Of Icarus (See Review Here)
I know fan reaction towards this book was cold when it was first announced, and I'll admit parts of it were hard to read given we all know how Eddie's story ends. I'm not a fan of media that teases false hope to the audience, only to cruelly yank it away.
That being said, I will go to bat for this book: It's well-written, and does a good job expanding on Eddie's character and his relationships with others (Wayne, Al Munson, Jason, etc). I also appreciate the book's themes regarding "forced conformity," and its scathing criticisms towards individuals and institutions (school teachers, law enforcement, students, residents, etc) who scapegoat and punish people like Eddie for existing while allowing (or in some cases, enabling) truly vile people to get away with being vicious and cruel towards "acceptable targets."
Considering how certain individuals on Tumblr and varying social media platforms have been treating others for the past few months, this book couldn't have come during a more relevant time.
#11: Stranger Things Halloween Special (See Review Here)
A delightful Halloween comic taking place before season 1 which centers around the Party telling an urban legend about the Child Eater of Hawkins, which coincidentally has eerie parallels to Vecna. Creepy artwork, an unsettling atmosphere, and a fun twist at the end! :)
#10: Stranger Things Hawkins Horrors (See Review Here)
Same deal as the Halloween Special, except it takes place between Seasons 3 and 4, and features multiple horror stories told by Steve, Robin, Nancy, Max, Lucas, Erica, Dustin, and Mike while they're all trapped in the Video Store during a power outage. The stories are scary and reminiscent of horror anthologies like Tales from the Crypt and Goosebumps, and some of them even cheekily foreshadow certain events that occur in season 4.
#9: Stranger Things Runaway Max (See Reviews Here)
Like Flight of Icarus, this book is hard to read, albeit for a different reason: I don't enjoy stories with characters trapped in abusive situations, and this book does not pull its punches in depicting the utter hell Max suffered through living with both Neil and Billy.
That being said, I grew to have a new appreciation for Max's character because of this book, and I liked seeing her backstory, her perspective on the events of season 2, and her thoughts about the characters she interacts with. I loved seeing her relationship with Lucas develop, I liked her brief interactions with Steve, and there was a satisfying payoff in her standing up to Billy and finally regaining some control over her life. If you love Max's character, this book is for you!
#8: Stranger Things Winter Special (See Review Here)
The closest Stranger Things will ever have for a Christmas Special (not counting the endings of the first two season finales). So many little details (i.e. the way the Party explains different Christmas stories to El and how she visualizes them, the revelation about what happened to the demodog in Joyce's fridge, etc) that make this an enjoyable read.
#7: Stranger Things Lucas On The Line (See Review Here)
One thing I will say for the tie-ins is that I appreciate how they expand the perspectives of characters from the show. Such is the case with Lucas on the Line. It takes place between seasons 3 and 4, and explores Lucas's attempts to come to terms with his trauma, the growing rift between himself and Max, his attempts to balance his strained relationships with his friends and his desire to play basketball and break out of the "nerd" stereotype, and it gives a very brutal but effective portrait of what it's like for Lucas to be one of the few black kids in Hawkins constantly surrounded by people who are either outwardly racist or project their biases and prejudices in truly insidious ways.
There are two reasons I'm not ranking this novel as highly even though it's a fan-favorite: 1.) There are continuity errors that took me out of certain moments while reading it, and 2.) The third act (which is when S4 begins) does a clumsy job tying in with the rest of the book and its themes. I really wish the book had continued with Lucas's story up to the end of S4 instead of stopping halfway through.
#6: Stranger Things The Other Side (See Review Here)
I always wanted to know what was going on with Will in season 1 when he was taken to the Upside Down. This comic thankfully elaborates on that and doesn't disappoint. Will's journey to survive is both intense and terrifying, and the way the comic seamlessly connects itself with the events of season 1 is to be applauded.
I have no clue what the Duffer Brothers plan to reveal in season 5 about the Upside Down and why time froze in 1983 when Will was taken, but considering they talked with the writers and artists for this comic and gave their stamp of approval, I'm hopeful the events of The Other Side won't be retconned.
#5: Stranger Things Science Camp (See Review Here)
Who knew that when Dustin went to Science Camp, he walked right into a Friday the 13th movie? 😂
Don't want to spoil too much about this one, but I had a blast reading it. Dustin's perspective is always entertaining, the comic works as a brilliant introduction for Suzie, and the mystery plaguing the camp is genuinely interesting and has a good twist. High recommendation.
#4: Stranger Things Zombie Boys (See Review Here)
I'm still bitter that the character of Joey Kim never made an appearance on the show despite the camaraderie he had with the Party, as well as how he gave the boys some catharsis from all the shit they were put through in season 1.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the premise of the Party making a zombie movie, and I appreciated how it handled the characters' trauma without being patronizing. The artwork was also impressive and beautiful to look at. Here's hoping we get more comics and graphic novels like this in the future!
#3: Stranger Things Tomb Of Ybwen (See Review Here)
At its core, the comic manages to explore an aspect that wasn't given much coverage on the show: Will's reaction to Bob's death and his attempts to come to terms with it. All of which culminates in a quest Will undertakes when he finds a map from Bob that (allegedly) leads to an ancient Viking treasure buried in Hawkins.
I don't want to give too much away in terms of spoilers, but the story is both emotional, sad, and heartwarming, and it does an excellent job reinforcing the friendship between all 4 boys while also demonstrating the impact Bob had on Will's life.
#2: Stranger Things and Dungeons and Dragons (See Review Here)
Speaking as someone who's occasionally crafted various fantasy scenarios in my head to cope with the stresses of life, this comic was deeply relatable. The show never shied away from emphasizing the importance of D&D to these characters, and this comic expands on that by illustrating why they became interested in D&D in the first place, how they've used D&D to cope with living in Hawkins, how the events of the first 3 seasons factor into how they play D&D, and how the game evolved with them as they continued to get older. It's like the piece of media from your childhood that stays with you as an adult. Arguably the best comic in the series (so far).
#1: Stranger Things Rebel Robin (See Reviews Here)
My favorite book and tie-in of the series. Speaking as someone who's gay, this story spoke to me on a personal level, and there were a lot of parallels I was drawing between Robin's experiences in high school and my own: The fear of being outed and ostracized. The desire to break free and explore the world. Recognizing the injustices that exist in society and wishing you could do something about them. Getting a nasty dose of reality that people you thought you could trust aren't reliable, and may even be more awful than you anticipated. Been there, done that, still dealing with some aspects of it.
It's funny because even if you take out the plot elements relating to the Upside Down, you still get a great coming-of-age story, and one that speaks to many people, LGBT+ or otherwise.
That concludes the ranking and reviews for right now! Thank you again for those who've been reading them! :)

FAQ: read before submitting
[plain text: FAQ: read before submitting]
a note re series: I am more than happy to queue up an entire series on request! if this is what you want, please indicate that explicitly in your submission, especially in cases where the first book in a series and the series as a whole have the same title. otherwise I need to ask for clarification, and it slows down the process of getting your submissions queued up.
where do I submit books?
submissions are currently closed!
[plain text: submissions are currently closed!]
[here. before you submit books, though, please check the list of books that have already been posted or queued. (note: if you’re using the mobile app on an Android phone, you may have to copy the link into your browser in order to access it.)
when submitting multiple books, please submit all of them in a single ask so it’s easier for me to keep track of, especially if you’re submitting them anonymously. also, please include the author’s name!]
what counts as having “read” a book?
did you finish the book? then you’ve read it. if you did not finish the book, you have not read it.
do audiobooks / having a book read to you count as having “read” a book?
do you think you’ve “read” the book? then you’ve read it. I’m not here to police your experiences or your relationships with physical books / ebooks / audiobooks / whatever.
does [graphic novel / manga / manhua] count as a “book”?
for the purposes of this poll, a book is a prose narrative, so graphic novels and other visual media with text do not count as “books”.
does [“novella” / “novelette” / short story] count as a “book’?
if a short story was originally published in a single issue of a periodical, in a multi-author anthology, or as part of a single-author collection, I will most likely not accept it unless it has subsequently been published as a standalone volume of more than ~75 pages. if you submit a text where this applies and you think it should be accepted anyway, please elaborate on why with your submission.
however: if a short story was originally published in the form of a standalone volume (i.e., not as part of a collection of texts), then yes, under normal circumstances that counts! I don’t care if it was a 10-page pamphlet or a 1000-page behemoth: if it was first published on its own, including as an ebook, it’s a book.
you can see my more detailed guidelines for short fiction here (link is to the sci-fi poll blog, but the principles are the same).
the one exception is things like (e.g.) The Fellowship of the Ring, which is explicitly the first volume of a single, larger book — in a case like this you would submit The Lord of the Rings, rather than its component volumes.
I encourage you to submit short fiction to @have-you-read-this-short-fiction even if it’s not eligible here!
does [short story collection] count as a “book”?
for the purposes of this poll, no, unless the stories are linked into some kind of overarching whole. simply sharing a common setting does not qualify (so Le Guin’s Tales of Earthsea would not count as a “book”).
what about [series] as a whole?
no. this blog is asking about single books. feel free to submit multiple books in a series if you’re so inclined, though!
what counts as “fantasy”?
if you think something should count as fantasy, feel free to submit it. I haven’t read every book, and I have a flexible definition of the genre. there are, however, limits to my flexibility — if you send me The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (real, incomprehensible example I’ve seen on a list of “fantasy” recommendations), it’s not getting posted.
if you send me a liminal fantasy like Haïlji’s The Republic of Užupis, especially if it’s not easy to determine from reviews or online information that the book has a fantastic element, it would be helpful if you indicate what aspects of the book mark it as (broadly) fantasy.
note that I am definitely willing to include works of science fantasy like Tamsyn Muir’s The Locked Tomb books. I will not accept Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern books. they’re science fiction, and I will die on this hill.
I also will not be accepting any books by J.K. Rowling.
what about sci-fi?
there’s a blog for that. :-)
does it have to be in English?
no! I read a number of languages and would be more than happy to include books in any language. the demographics of tumblr mean that you’re probably unlikely to get an overall “yes” result for something not in English unless it has a very popular English translation, but I’m always happy to help publicize stuff — and maybe get some book recommendations in the languages I read. :-)
you can see links to all the language tags on this blog here.
could you add more options to the polls?
I’ve considered multiple possibilities and seen many different arrangements of options on different poll blogs, and I’ve concluded that I want to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible, so I will be sticking with just yes and no.
why don’t you include blurbs for the books in these polls?
there are both practical and ideological reasons for this. tl;dr, it’s a lot of work, presents logistical problems for books not originally published in English, and there are books and authors that I categorically don’t want to promote beyond showing people the cover.

QUARTERFINAL ROUND, MATCH 3 OUT OF 4! FINALS FOR SET C!
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Skylla:
sapphic little mermaid with a happy ending. what's not to love. pretty art too (it's a graphic novel/webcomic, can be found for free online (legally)). she's sweet, she speaks sign language, she's brave.
Skylla is a mermaid who falls in love with a human. Since her language just sounds like screeching to humans she is taught sign language by Corinth, the girl she falls in love with. Eventually she decides she wants to go to the surface so she can be with Corinth. She loves hamburgers and also has a feisty streak. Corinth also has a shitty boyfriend that, as a condition of becoming human, she has to kill with a knife given to her by her sisters. She ends up not killing him because Corinth ask her to, but they end up being able to be together when Skylla asks her father to turn her into a mermaid because she was near death.First of all, sign language. Second of all, wlw. Third of all, slow burn.
Bug:
Their a bug that falls in love with a human they rescue and becomes human, but even when they don't get to keep their human body, they still get to be with their love. It's a sci-fi fairytale musical.
Little Mermaid meets Starship Troopers musical starring awesome puppets and the most trans coded main character ever. Please. Please vote Bug Starship I love him. Go watch Kick it Up a Notch from Starship. Go watch Status Quo from Starship. You will understand.
He's a bug and he lives in space on a bug planet but he really wants to be a starship ranger which you can only be if you are a human and then one day a spaceship lands on his planet and so he goes to an evil bug called Pincer who then helps him become a human. And Bug falls in love with a human on the spaceship and it's very sweet. The musical and storyline are based on the little mermaid story, the creators themselves called it "the little mermaid but in space". Bug wanting to be a human/a starship ranger and achieving that and falling in love with a human is very much like the little mermaid
Starship is a musical that can only be described as The Little Mermaid meets Starship Troopers. It follows Bug, an alien bug who dreams of being a Starship Ranger, a galactic explorer/soldier, but the rigid confines of bug society keeps him trapped in a job he hates. He reaches a Starship Ranger named February from the hive and immediately falls in love with her. In order to be with her and pursue his dream, he makes a deal with a giant scorpion named Pincer who through sci-fi bs gives him a human body. Near the end of the second act he sacrifices his human body and returns to his bug body, and saves the day and wins February's heart. It's truly the ultimate Little Mermaid. He has multiple songs, and his bug body is portrayed by a puppet!! Vote for Bug!!
“It's a big, big, universe So many dimensions And unanswered questions Not to mention Life What an invention Life There's no choice involved in what you are given One mind, one voice, one body to live in It's a short, small thing we lead With so much potential Pointless or essential Which one can I be? Where do I fit? Where do I stand? Who are they to say what I am? And how can I stay inside this awful world I know? I need a way out I need an escape I'd rather be dead than to live in this place I wish that something or someone could just take it all away Someone take me away” dear god….. can anybody hear me…. (song from starship)
They are the purest little mermaid adaptation done in the most unuque way. An alien insect gets turned into a human, a race he has always loved and admired, to be with the woman he fell in love with. Also just a great musical.
Bug's whole arc is so so in tune with that of the little mermaid. He is an alien who has fallen in love with humanity through a crashed spaceship and trades his place in the hive for a chance to be with both with the human he's falling for and to be a Starship Ranger. He body swaps with human in a cryogenic pod! It's literally sci-fi Little Mermaid!

do audiobooks / having a book read to you count as having “read” a book?
do you think you’ve “read” the book? then you’ve read it.
I don’t care if it was a 10-page pamphlet or a 1000-page behemoth: if it was first published on its own, including as an ebook, it’s a book.
you can see my more detailed guidelines for short fiction here.
the one exception is things like (e.g.) The Fellowship of the Ring, which is explicitly the first volume of a single, larger book — in a case like this you would submit The Lord of the Rings, rather than its component volumes.
I encourage you to submit short fiction to @have-you-read-this-short-fiction even if it’s not eligible here!
does [short story collection] count as a “book”?
for the purposes of this poll, no, unless the stories are linked into some kind of overarching whole. simply sharing a common setting does not qualify (so Yoon Ha Lee’s Hexarchate Stories would not count as a “book”).
what about [series] as a whole?
no. this blog is asking about single books. feel free to submit multiple books in a series if you’re so inclined, though!
what counts as “sci-fi”?
if you think something should count as sci-fi, feel free to submit it. I haven’t read every book, and I have a flexible definition of the genre. there are some limits to my flexibility, but as long as it is set in the future, has some kind of futuristic technology, is set an an alternate timeline, or includes other non-realist phenomena that are explained (pseudo)scientifically, I’ll probably consider it sci-fi.
I’m a bit more ambivalent about older texts — I tend to think that something like Lucian’s True History (for example) can’t really be meaningfully said to be science fiction, for all that it involves space travel. once we start getting into early modern philosophical novels like More’s Utopia we’re on somewhat firmer ground, but really only in the nineteenth century do we start getting things I would unequivocally consider to be science fiction.
note that I am definitely willing to include works of science fantasy like Tamsyn Muir’s The Locked Tomb books or Piers Anthony’s Incarnations of Immortality, as long as there’s clearly sci-fi stuff going on along with the magic.
what about fantasy?
there’s a blog for that. :-)
does it have to be in English?
no! I read a number of languages and would be more than happy to include books in any language. the demographics of tumblr mean that you’re probably unlikely to get an overall “yes” result for something not in English unless it has a very popular English translation, but I’m happy to post the poll anyway — and maybe get some book recommendations in the languages I read. :-)
you can see links to all the language tags on this blog here.
why don’t you include blurbs for the books in these polls?
there are both practical and ideological reasons for this. tl;dr, it’s a lot of work, presents logistical problems for books not originally published in English, and there are books and authors that I categorically don’t want to promote beyond showing people the cover.

Okay I think I need to cast a wider net here
Media Rec Request!!
Hi friends, I am putting a silly fic writing challenge to myself that involves writing fic for a fandom starting with every letter of the alphabet + every numeral. But I am missing some numbers and coming up short on potential things I could check out to fill for them (yes I am reading and watching new things JUST so I can complete this challenge 😅)
So! If you have something to recommend that starts with the numeral 4, 6, or 8, please let me know!
(I have a potential fill for 8 but I haven’t watched it yet so I’m looking for backups in case I don’t like it/it doesn’t work out for the fic writing.)
Requirements:
—It can be just about any type of media!! Movies, books, short stories, tv shows of any stripe (anime, cartoon, western live action, c/k/j-drama, etc etc), fiction podcasts/radio plays, graphic novels, webcomics, multimedia, possibly video games. The only limitations are
I’ve got to be able to experience it without significant expenditure (so if your video game rec comes with a quality let’s play, awesome! Otherwise it’s got to be affordable and playable on iPhone, MacBook, or PS4, bc that’s what I’ve got. Similarly any live performance would need an accessible recording or a script I can read)
I don’t write RPF, so any nonfiction/bandom/celebrity fic/similar is out. Historical fiction is possible, but the farther back and more fictionalized the better
—The title must start with the NUMERAL 4, 6, or 8, as it gets listed on Ao3. If it doesn’t have an Ao3 tag yet, the title must be consistently stylized as the numeral, not the WORD four, six, or eight. For example, The Sixth Sense is not a viable option, but I’m using 10th Kingdom for 1 and 9-1-1 for 9 (91 Days was also an option). Because I’m going by Ao3 tags it also can’t be like, a specific comic issue title where the actual fandom tag would be “Batman”.
That’s it!! I know that was a lot of details, so thank you for reading through the whole post if you did and thank you in advance for any recs! I know it’s very specific haha but ONE of you must have some hyper niche anime or webcomic you are constantly dying to recommend that answers to this description.
On the off chance you have more than one recommendation, I’ll put some additional pros/cons beneath the cut
—obviously it will help if I don’t have to commit to a 15 book fantasy epic or 100+ episodes of a series, but if I can get a sense for the world and characters in the first book/season/whatever I’ll give it a shot
—Fantasy/sci-fi are the genres I tend to be most interested in, and also work well for what I’m trying to do with the fic challenge side. I love a good mystery as well.
—I am a hard sell on any sitcom/slice of life/romcom type stuff. That’s not a flat no on those genres, but you’re gonna need a good pitch for why I’ll like this one
#writing#recs#this is all 911’s fault btw#i would’ve been satisfied with the alphabet alone if 911 wasn’t already here#now I gotta do all the numbers too I can’t just have ONE numbers fic

Weird question, maybe?
What do you think you would recommend when you feel depression (and you're under treatment and all that), to love drawing art and writing again? I mean, there are some videos that inspire you or stuff like that? I have read your fic and recs and would love to be back into writing and all that 💕
Thank you for trusting me with such a vulnerable question. I applaud your choice to be in therapy, and i’m going to assume you’ve asked your therapist for helpful steps in this, too? If not, that could be a good idea since they know your personal circumstances.
I’m not a therapist. Please keep that in mind. But i too have struggled with long absences from creating, so i can give you some insights in how i came back from that.
An important thing is practicing kindness to myself. Of course, that’s far from easy. But if i don’t create? I forgive myself. If i was going to write and i didn’t? Well it’s a hobby, not a job, and i should only do it if it’s (mostly) fun. No matter how many days i haven’t written — it’s ok. That’s what i repeat to myself: it’s ok, and you will write when you want to.
Your mind might be too clouded with depression right now to create. That’s ok — it needs all the energy for healing from that. You’re doing that, and that’s already amazing.
Here’s what i also give myself permission for: to do things badly. To suck ass. To write horribly. As long as i’m having fun, who cares. If i wish to share my writing in the future i can always edit it. Whip it into shape. But at first, in the process? I am writing for me, and it’s allowed to be terrible. Again, i am not being paid, this is my creative outlet, i am doing this for fun.
You ask what inspires me. I’ve thought about it and, well, a lot does. I mostly get ideas (or solutions for ideas that are stuck) when i am doing other things, like doing dishes, or going on walks, or cleaning, or showering. That’s when suddenly something locks into place in my brain that’s been turning around without me even knowing.
And what inspires me to create (again), is other art. Reading books or graphic novels. Reading a funny or heartbreaking fic. Admiring fanart. But also going to a museum, a local drag show, a concert, … watching other artists extract joy from doing what they do. I get inspired by films, often too about artists, like dead poets society. Or i’ve started writing poetry again after reading a destiel au about a poet trying to find inspiration again after a long absence and struggling with self confidence. Fandom specific: rewatching the thing you want to create for, helps.
Reading about writing and listening to podcasts about writing, especially where writers talk about their insecurities, has also been helpful. Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott i found interesting. How to fail often has writer guests and is specifically about how failings and imposter syndrome have been part of even the most successful people’s careers. The writer files and The writers panel are interesting podcasts on writing as well.
I think my advice to you would be, take small steps. Forgive yourself every time along the way. Make a list of things that you love reading about and think of a way to put that in a blender for a story that will excite you. Allow yourself to write a bad first draft. To draw something imperfect. Fuck all the rules.
And start with short periods of creating. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Art is you, so you, it’s your self expression and though it might change over the years, it’s always yours. You can’t lose it. It’s still in there.
I hope this helped. Best of luck.

Now is the Time of Monsters: Book Recs
This is a short list of stories about entropy and being on the precipice of change, where places are living things and the future of humanity is uncertain. Lifted heavily from the recs on the Pathologic and Disco Elysium subreddits. If you like unusual, often esoteric literature that rewires your brain chemistry forever, this list might interest you!
Warning: the books on this list are intended for an adult audience
Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami
Equal parts cyberpunk and surreal dystopia. Two worlds with two parallel narratives that gradually intersect.
The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin
Literally a city struggling to be born while an extra-dimensional force threatens to tear apart the connections that make the universe whole.
The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan
A magical boarding school except you can't understand a single word anyone is saying, the children are dying, and the book itself is as much a living thing as the House its protagonists inhabit.
Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge
An episodic tale of self-discovery told through the investigation of poorly understood cryptids called "beasts." Questions the forces responsible for shaping our lives and who we are as people.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
So the fic I read that was inspired by this was about being trapped in a House that's slowly succumbing to entropy at the end of a stillborn universe. I'm told that's an accurate description.
Metro 2033 by Dmitrii Glukhovskii
A puppy of a man goes on a series of horrible adventures in the nuclear post-apocalypse and is forced to decide the future of humanity in a world of rumors and miscommunication.
Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
The world has been touched by something strange that threatens to change life as we know it. A book that questions the border between you and I, between flesh and earth, between dreams and reality.
The City & the City by China Mieville
An existential murder mystery that thrusts you into a world of two ambiguously related, but separated, cities. An exploration of borders: be it physical or imagined.
Germinal by Emile Zola
In a cruelly exploited mining community in 1860's France, people are treated like animals to be sacrificed to an unforgiving, hungry earth. A classic realist novel that seeks to plant the seeds of change and hope for a better future.
BONUS ROUND: MOVIES
Stalker (1979)
Sopping wet men lie in puddles and sometimes in grass as they struggle to find meaning in a changed world. Inspired by the book Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky whose other works I'd also recommend!
Snowpiercer (2013)
From the director of Parasite we have a post-apocalypse where all that remains of the world is sheltered on a single, impossible train on the verge of a revolution. Based off the graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.
NOTE: FEEL FREE TO ADD ON TO THIS WITH YOUR OWN SUGGESTIONS. I mostly made this list for myself/work purposes and haven't read everything. Also if you're here from Patho or DE, please check the subreddits if you haven't already! They have great recommendations :D

.o| Halloween Special |o.
2o24 Edition
Warnings : Violence, injury, graphic depictions, cannibalism, home intruders
Please, read with caution under the cut as it contains truly graphic description of potential triggers. Stay safe !
Please, consider supporting me on Ko-Fi ! ♥
The rain is pouring down on your windows as you watch the brave children go by in the street.
It's about eight-thirty, you've got work to do, so obviously you couldn't join in the party going on under your windows. And after all, it wasn't a big deal - you didn't particularly like mingling with crowds. Your thing was to celebrate Halloween under a thick blanket, snug in the dark, without trying too hard. Horror movies, both animated and with characters, were your thing. Finally, you stopped your contemplation of the outside world. People didn't come ringing very often, and this year, a storm had even scared off the bravest in search of sweets. So there's no need to be on the lookout for a little cherub who's come to collect. You dig yourself out and make your way to the sofa, where your hot chocolate is patiently waiting for you, remote control in hand, ready to plunge you into the darkest hours, immersing yourself in the films as they roll by, shivering in terror for some, or just enjoying others.
The hours fly by when you're enjoying yourself, enough to realize that it's past midnight when the last one ends. A horrific novel, based on an apparently true story, of a group of people hunting down victims to devour at this party. Your bones creak as, at last, you unfold yourself, allowing yourself to drag your feet back to your room, taking one last look at the darkness of the night. The wind had intensified, rattling the branches together, making you feel as if you were in one of those famous horror movies. Quickly dispelling this sinister idea of potential monsters trying to get through your windows to come and feast on your flesh. A chuckle passes your lips as you roll between your warm, fluffy blankets.
“- Ridiculous, you're just ridiculous. There's no such thing as monsters.”
Sleep doesn't embrace you for long. The muffled sound of breaking glass wakes you from your slumber. You feel your heart pounding in your chest, reluctant to get out of the covers or just hide in them until the sun rises. A thief? A loose branch from a tree? Maybe even worse. A new noise makes you yelp, before you realize your stupidity. Your cat was there, adorable, purring. That moron must have broken a glass or a bottle. Your heart calms down, resuming normal beats before you extricate yourself from your blankets, groping for the light switch. You feel more reassured now that your house is light. You make your way to the kitchen, looking for any trace of glass on the floor, hoping it's just a glass and not one of your vases.
Finally, you find where a noise is coming from, your eyes rolling up to the sky as you casually bend over to start cleaning up, so your cat doesn't hurt itself on its mistake.
But something stops you. Leaning there, your heart starts beating hard in your chest again. You can hear it clearly, the wind whistling through your kitchen window, bursting a little further. Your eyes can't tear themselves away from this information. Someone had entered your house, hiding behind a glass that your cat might not even have broken. Your hands become clammy. Your short breath searches for a way through your lips, before you feel the weight of terror compress your ribcage. Finally, as if coming back to life, your body begins to function normally again. You sit up straight, aiming for the front door. You've got to get out of here, get back into the storm air, get help.
And just when you think you can get out of your house, the painful realization hits again, as your head slams against the wooden panel, shattering your nose in the process, ringing you on the spot as you're dragged by the hair, the echo of your scream reaching the wind outside.
“- What's taking you so long?
- Give me time, patience is the key to a good dinner, Jimin, but I've been hungry for an hour. And all you can say is wait.”
The small sound of an exasperated breath passes the lips of the older man, at least what seems to you to be the older man, as you come to your senses, though you don't remember passing out. The light is subdued, but it still manages to burn your retinas when you open your eyelids. You recognize your cellar, which has been slightly modified. In the center, a large table has been set, with everything that would constitute a good banquet, if you forget the strange fact that there was no food. Several bottles of wine had been opened, and three people stood around, moving to finish the preparations.
Your hands are bound behind your back, immobilizing you completely, while something has been forced into your mouth, preventing you from screaming or even speaking.
The coolness of the night is felt on your now bare body, and finally, one of the three men looks at you, holding your gaze with an almost kind smile, before he straightens up, making the other two stop arguing gently and turn with one body towards you. You feel the terrifying weight of the unknown: it wasn't one person who had penetrated your intimacy, but three. And you feel the tears welling up, praying that nothing too horrible will happen to you.
“- Our host is awake.
- At last, we can eat! We're going to be able to eat!"Have a little patience, Jimin, the others haven't arrived yet. But I'm hungry!”
The scene seems unreal to you, your throbbing not wanting to calm down, as the said Jimin straightens up, only to come and watch you more closely, his tongue passing against his lips, before the second one holds him back. You actually recognize them quite easily, now that you're wide awake. Everyone's talking about them, since they're one of the most famous K-pop groups of this century. Yoongi gently pulls Jimin back, kissing the top of his head, while Seokjin finishes sharpening several perfectly-bladed knives, which he places on a small table behind.
Finally, you calm down a little: they're renowned for their kindness and open-mindedness, and even if they've broken into your home, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Perhaps they were simply bored and looking for a bit of adrenaline by breaking into a house in this way. Unlucky for you. You try to reassure yourself as best you can, taking short breaths, before the rest of the group arrive. They're all neatly dressed, as if they've come to celebrate something.
“- Is everyone here?
- Yes. Thanks to Namjoon, who without him, we'd still be looking around.”
In a small cage, your cat. Your eyes widen, and you look at them, terrified. They weren't going to eat your cat in front of you, were they? You struggle under their amused gazes, and they forget all about you again, just long enough to finish the preparations. You look away, not wanting to see this barbaric act.
“- We're not monsters either. We're not going to do anything to the poor kid.”
This half reassures you, and you wrinkle your nose. It was already good news that nobody was touching the animal, but now you don't quite understand what all this means. No one answers your question; on the contrary, Taehyung and Jungkook lift you up, forcing you to lie down right in the center of the table, preventing you from escaping by tying you painfully to the ends. You beg with your eyes, hoping they won't do anything to you.
“- Well, since Jungkook is the one who found it first, he'll have the best share, at least his favorite.
- I'll have the thigh, then. Perfect.”
You watch Seokjin take the largest of his knives, intrigued by the conversation, before realizing the horror. No matter how much you struggle, it doesn't stop him from plunging the blade deep into your flesh, slicing you like one would a common animal, carefully depositing the slices of you on pretty plates. The pain is unbearable, your head spinning as they slice deeper and deeper into your flesh. They seem as surprised as you at your ability to stay awake. Yet they say nothing as they feast on your flesh, devouring you unscrupulously, cutting ever deeper, seeking ever more. You hope this hell will soon be over, finally feeling yourself slowly drift away, your eyes riveted to the ceiling as a pair of chopsticks advance towards your eyeballs, even this you are effortlessly denied. No more cries can pass your lips, just accepting your fate and the pain, before finally release comes. Finally, you're granted death.
“- What do we do with the cat?
- Jimin will keep it, we'll put it in the animal shelter in a month. As usual, Taehyung.”
The seven of them glare at each other, heading straight for the cellar where your mutilated body has been left hanging on the table, before exiting as if nothing had happened. The building goes up in flames once they're all out, and they're long gone by the time the fire department appears. Unable to find anything but ashes and the charred remains of your body.
“Today is the first of November and once again, this Halloween is marked by a savage attack. The mutilated body of… was found this morning. Like all the others, the person had been mutilated and eaten before being burned to death. Local police have launched an extensive search, but so far there seems to be no evidence. This is the fifth Halloween in a row that something like this has happened, and the investigating commissioner still has no serious leads to follow…”
