johan is incredibly elusive, yes, an unfathomable character by design. and his story revolves around the absence of his own identity. but the profound confusion johan feels towards his personhood + this strong sense of non-existence borne from great abuse, isolation, purposeful conflation between him and his sister, etc. remains incredibly human to me.... he takes on nina's worst memories as his own, imprinting on picture books and literature, in an effort to understand himself. more than anything, johan liebert wants to die - it's his longest and biggest wish. his explicit and perpetual suicidality about him isn't shallow, it's revealing and real. he wants to die, and he wants to be killed by those he trusts. he wants to self-destruct, vanishing from the world entirely. but he also wants another way out; he cries when he's alone, wants to protect nina, tries to confront his immensely miserable life. conceit of monster is the search for johan and the investigation into his truth for a reason. he must be found and illuminated and understood, in order to finally make him real.
