Rook: Final Fantasy 7 is the worst in the series (og and remake)

As she speaks, a Raticate suddenly rips through the trees in front of them, stopping the E.X Rockets in their tracks. As the pokemon's unconscious and bludgeoned body skids to a half in front of them, the sounds of fighting can be more clearly heard ahead. It's a very one-sided fight from the sounds of things, screams of terror and pleas for mercy cut short by sickening crunches and gargled wheezing. There's snarling and growling clearly audible, but it can't be identified as a pokemon.

Grunt 1: Shit. I should've stayed home, fuck this shit—

Admin: You are staying and fighting, 542. If you want to violate an order from your admin, go ahead. You'll wish the beast got to you first.

Grunt 2: Hoooly fuck he's actually real what the fuck what the fuck—

Grunt 1: You thought he was fake?

Grunt 2: I-I thought he was just like... A really pissed off Ursaring or something! I don't know! Not an actual guy who can body a Raticate, what the fuck—

???: I can hear you over there... Y'all have one chance to leave with your lives. Use it now. Otherwise... Hope y'all wrote your loved ones goodbye, gave 'em a kiss and a hug. Assuming anyone loved you, they ain't gonna see you after I'm done with you.

The Rockets go dead silent at the sound of that distinctly-accented Johtonian. As the one with the bodycam looks around, the hesitance in the postures of the others can be clearly seen.

Grunt 1: ... Well?

Admin: No turning back now. Let's do the best we can.

As they step through the treeline, they come across a gruesome sight. The grunts prior to them are scattered around the ground. It's hard to tell details with the low light, but it's clear that none of them are moving. Kenneth is the only one standing, and he's growling and staring at the Rockets with murderous intent.

Admin: Kenneth Kaminsky, we at E.X Rocket order you to stand down. We want to take you alive. Stand down and you will not get hurt.

The grunts send out one pokemon each—a Raticate and an Arbok. The Admin sends out a Gyarados. Kenneth slips into a battling stance, snarling at the sea dragon towering over him. It seems like he fully intends to fight it, but he does step back slightly towards the lake.

Kenneth: Y'all think I'm just gonna lay down for you? After all this!? I've been telling y'all for years, I don't care what you call yourself, I don't care who's asking, GET OFF OF MY TURF!

As he steps forward to attack, a Gyarados rears up out of the lake and lunges forward, clashing with the Admin's Gyarados. This seems to startle Kenneth for a moment, but he quickly regains his posture, grinning wildly as the admin fumbles for her mega stone.

Grunt 2: Admin, where's the keystone!?

Admin: I-I thought it was on my bracelet! Where's my bracelet-!?

Grunt 1: Fuck this, I'm out, I want to live—

Kenneth picks up a rock from the lakeside and pitches it at the grunt with the bodycam, knocking them over with a loud crack. The grunt lands face-down, the feed goes black, and the sounds of battle ring out for the remainder of the run time. As the camera's storage runs out, the fighting dies out, and the only sounds heard are the sounds of growling from beast and man.]

I saw that you tagged sugi with "character assassination of the decade" and i couldn't agree more, crazy how shogun ass arc felt like the absolute peak of gntm and especially sugi's character and then everything afterward fell completely flat thanks to that nonsensical uts*ro twist. it's not even that i hate the idea of shoyo being evil before becoming a schoolteacher (in fact i think most ppl predicted he was connected to the naraku back in 2k13 lol), but why say "akshually he's alive all along" the literal arc after you reveal his dramatic death?? so much wasted potential because of that failure of a final boss and so many characters suffered as a result bc they weren't allowed further character development - i'm particularly pissed as a fan of zura, nobume, kagura (why is she still stuck to ginsan's side by the end instead of following her dream of being a space hunter) and the kiheitai

honestly i still remember reading the end of shogun ass arc when it came out, and i think bansai says "shinsuke's eyes were firmly focused on something" and how much hope it gave me... like the potential of zura + sugi working together to put the final nail in the coffin for the bakufu (zura by aiming for a legitimate place in a new govt and sugi with more underhanded methods lmao.. i still think kiheitai should've become high-grade bounty hunters at the end of the series), or the reveal of a bond btwn nobume and sugi since sasaki was working so closely with him. but instead that godawful "everyone vs aliens + dead guy who's actually alive" shonen cliche final battle happened. in fact i think it actively undermines the themes of the series bc until then i thought the true enemy isn't necessarily the amanto but the corruption and greed that existed in the so-called samurai country long before the amanto even arrived, and the goal was to figure out how to adapt to this new world and change yourself along the way.... but i guess the actual message was just "foreigners bad" which is way more reactionary than i expected lol. the gintaman in my head ended around ch 525, maybe ch 540 at the latest, after that it's all my delusions

yeah it definitely peaked there, chapter 519 to be specific. after that it started steadily going downhill until it decided to sprint just to land in shounen hell. excruciatingly long-winded spiritual successor to beelzebub. utsuro as a whole was very messy and nonsensical, and yeah as you said that reveal being IMMEDIATELY after it was established that hacking his sorry head off ruined the trio's lives and relationships with each other was just... umm... okay... it's also funny that shoyo was like a separate identity from utsuro altogether he was able to summon and suppress so when the guys met the evil guy with the same face as their angstily and unwillingly murdered teacher they were like Well there's aliens at play. not our guy not buying it. bye. dude??? that thang has put you to sleep once, man up and be sad about it. but god forbid there's any kind of actually complex conflict or anyone is ever guilty of anything. tbh i don't remember shit after shogun assassination i just remember this whole thing being structurally underwhelming and feeling cheap.

yeah takasugi's eye was focused on something. it was focused on gintoki 😋 everything needs to be focused on gintoki all the time. takasugi's long-winded angst and anger need to shift focus from his love towards sensei to his bond with gintoki. zura's entire deal whatever it was needed to center gintoki and his interests. shinpachi and kagura needed to forfeit all of their initial plans and embrace arrested development forever because yorozuya means family means they need to blow the power of friendship up gintoki's ass 24/7. every single female of any species needs to have a cute little crush on gintoki and he needs to be the main character for every rando he meets, changing their lives forever through his imposing presence. other characters can not have any conflict or development or agenda that doesn't center or at least heavily involve gintoki. and also nobody is allowed to have any rapport with each other independently of gintoki. never forget about the specialest little boy in the universe, if he doesn't get to give at least 5 boring pompous speeches per chapter or have a few epic one-liners everyone working on this franchise will need to immediately kill themselves (specified in their employment contracts in bold). also if you have anything less than enthusiastic to say about this you're a cretin who is too dumb to understand that any story that doesn't revolve around its main character always with no breaks is worthless and that doing exactly that is the epitome of genius writing btw.

takasugi's character assassination felt particularly asinine because for 80% of the story he's being menacing without much screen time and his personal drama is mostly hinted at, then he gets lots of focus in shogun assassination and it culminates in the plot twist flashback, after which he dedicates all his efforts to being overtly sad for gintoki and suffering more than jesus, and then he's killed off without any resolution. AND THEN HE'S REBORN AS SOME UGLY ASS BABY. like he can't get any dignity or integrity even in death lmao but it's ok i still love him bc as mentioned above gintama ended on chapter 519...

yeah i still think it might be not that deep but like it starts off as foreigners are the enemy and they came here to destroy our beautiful country so we have to stay resilient against their harassment. then it transcends to this country has always had its own rot and we the righteous and lovable riff-raffs will bring justice to it in the name of the moon, the country itself doesn't matter, we just want to protect our loved ones against anything that threatens them. and then it goes back to foreigners are evil and we'll actually go and kick their asses on their own territory even. to protect this country. alright!

ok back on topic. trigun stampede!!!!!!!!!!! hm. yes. yes i think its a good way to get back into the series yeah! it's insanely well animated & looks gorgeous, wonderful score imo, interesting and sparkling reboot, already confirmed for s2, etc etc. counterpoint: it's more of just like... shonen of the year type show than the original. like. truly it does steamroll over the "show don't tell" and "extremely slow escalation from slapstick comedy to horrifying cosmic philosophical tragedy" and "focus on specific interactions & people & moments on gunsmoke" parts of the original & replaces them w/ a more generic feeling type of action. like, u get the plant rem vash etc. reveal in the first five minutes of the first episode. nevertheless, i think it succeeds very well at what it was trying to do & visually it's stunning, the vaguely altered reboot premise is compelling, there's some utterly breathtaking cinematic shots that do make me feel shrimp emotions, & it's still a rlly fun show! etc. :}

A Discussion About “Filler” Episodes in Cartoons

One Urban dictionary entry defines “filler” as “A segment of anime, whether it be an entire episode or part of one, which does not appear in the manga of the title. Fillers, as the name implies, "fills" an episode with non-canonical material which has been written usually by the same company which animates it.”

As anime has become more prominent and easily available in the U.S. and otherwise, some people have started applying the term “filler” to specific episodes in American cartoons.

The bulk of Japanese anime is adapted from popular manga. Most American cartoons are the original brainchild and story of the creator, staff, writers, and team working on it. The closest equivalent American cartoons have are cartoons inspired by DC or Marvel comics. Even those adaptations take heavy creative license with the source material. These aren’t usually a direct retelling of the comics. They’re just as varied and dramatically different from the source material as the comics can be themselves. The best way to describe this: Comics have a set of loose templates and generally known stories that get adapted and re-adapted in ways that vary dramatically between authors and artists working on it. Anime tends to be a retelling of the manga with stylistic changes or cuts/changes made to the story to fit the constraints of animation vs the constraints of a manga page.

Also, most American cartoons within the past 10-20 years have been episodic. The most common structure of said cartoons were disconnected, self-contained stories and it was rare to see any kind of overarching story let alone plot elements or details that remained consistent throughout the series. Enter game-changers like Adventure Time or Steven Universe. Story-driven cartoons are popping up far more often. And it’s not outside the realm of possibility for an episodic cartoon to shift gears and adopt more story-driven elements. It’s not a given end result and there’s even separate debate about whether or not a linear story format is a stronger choice for certain cartoons vs an episodic format. I’m not chiming in on that particular debate for now. If anything, the point of bringing up cartoons that tow the line between episodic and story-driven are that they’re the most common targets for having episodes dubbed “filler.”

With cartoons, every episode is technically part of the “lore” or “canon” of the overall media. When someone calls an episode of a cartoon filler, the impression is that it’s inconsequential to the overarching plot. It gets sticky pretty quickly. If a cartoon has a key character interaction or significant plot moment, albeit brief, in a “filler” episode, that development carries over. It will pop up again and get addressed. With anime, viewers can safely skip entire arcs without missing important plot details. The characters, concepts, and plots in filler may as well not exist.

Even if a “filler” episode in an American cartoon has elements that are dropped or never addressed again, it’s still fundamentally different from a filler episode of something like a shonen anime. It all comes back to the anime being a retelling of a specific story with specific story beats where a cartoon, even with more story-driven elements, has an overarching story that’s getting actively worked on and developed over the course of the cartoon’s run. At the very least, “filler” feels like an odd or inadequate word. It needs further context when used to describe a cartoon episode. Does the viewer need plot-related cliff notes about what was covered to skip the episode or will these notes get recapped or called back to in a way they can easily piece things together?

That take feels pretty disrespectful, too, though. There’s a unique charm to episodic cartoons and media; one that a stricter, linear structure has trouble replicating without pacing issues. When a cartoon has both an overarching story and a scattered episodic structure, there’s room for more one-off stories about characters, world-building, and other smaller details that the main plot doesn’t have room for. For example, these smaller, bite-sized stories feature characters and dynamics that viewers love to see more of from romances, to friends buying birthday gifts, to ridiculous goose chases through the village, town, or general setting the story is in at the time. Episodic content gives the bigger story and characters room to breathe.

“Filler” episodes do piece in to a discussion about story-driven vs episodic content. Without delving too far deeper into that, I think it really depends on the creative team’s overall goals and intent. Some stories are meant to be one consistent chunk, others are episodic, and some are trying to strike a balance between the two. If anything, shouldn’t the discussion be about how successfully executed a story is based on the goals and intent behind it rather than how skippable it is?
