What makes a good yandere character for you? What are some of your favorite yanderes? And what are some that you like the least?

Aaa my first ask! Thank you so much!! Yes, as you can tell from my username, I do like yandere characters quite a bit! And I'm super excited to finally start ranting about them lollll Alright, this might get pretty long so I'll put my answers under the cut!

What makes a good yandere character for you?

This is a very subjective question, but first I'll explain what makes a character yandere.

"Yandere" comes from the Japanese verb 病んでいる which means to be sick. This can refer to any sort of illness, but with yandere characters, it's referring to ailments of the soul so to say. Basically a "yandere" character is anyone who becomes sick with love. Which is really vague, I know - but that's how it is.

A character can kill for love and still not be considered yandere. A different character can respect their target's (the person they are affectionate toward - their "darling") free-will and autonomy and still be considered yandere. It's vague and open to interpretation. What one person considers yandere, another might find them just being possessive.

Just getting a few common misconceptions out of the way first:

-Yandere characters can be abusive to their targets, but just because a character is abusive, that doesn't mean that they're yandere

-A character doesn't have to go around killing people to be considered yandere

Okay, with that out of the way, time to talk about my favorite kinds of yandere characters!

I like characters who are subtly manipulative, the characters that mess with their target's perceptions of reality to mold them into someone who can accept their isolation. I like to describe the buildup as "walking into a spider's web, and only after you think to turn around do you realize that it's too late." These characters can appear to be very doting (溺愛) to their targets and lull them into a false sense of security, and usually only show their true selves to people they see as their love rivals. These characters can also be commonly described as haraguro (腹黒) or scheming.

But I can go for any sort of yandere character! I'm not so good with gore tho so I try to avoid that, but any other type has their own appeals. There was this huge chart about the different types of yandere characters and their "symptoms" I found before, maybe I'll dig it up and explain it in detail in another post eventually. But for now I will move on to the next question!

What are some of your favorite yanderes?

I can explain a bit more about the kind of yandere characters I love by using some of my favs as examples! Please note that I read a lot of shoujo, especially because the yandere trope is gaining some good popularity in that demographic, so these are all male yanderes. Though, I do love me a good female yandere character too!

My absolute favorite yandere character is Haruma from 恋と心臓 (Love and Heart) Seriously, no one does it as well as him. I don't want to spoil anything since it's more fun to experience the craziness yourself and the series is available in English!

But to give a brief summary: Yoh (the main character), having lived a life where she didn't have anyone she could rely on, is incredibly independent. But then her childhood friend (who she doesn't remember), Haruma, moves in with her and suddenly she finds herself in the position of damsel in distress again and again, with Haruma being the only one to save her.

It's a great blend of psychological horror, romcom, and drama with a huge dose of unhealthy relationships and a happy ending! I recommend it to everyone who is comfy with the subject matter.

Kuroyuki from Nightshade deserves special mention for being the reason I started liking yandere characters in the first place.

I never really got the appeal before him, but when I played Nightshade, I liked him from the start. I tend to love comic relief characters (who are secretly quite sad/serious) so he caught my eye right away and then when the cray-cray hit, I was like,

Oh no, that's hot.

And it was over for me after that lol. Yandere love interests in otome games have a reputation for caging, and Kuroyuki has a subtle approach to this. He spins this (not entirely false) tale that everyone is trying to kill Enju (the main character) except for him, and that he's the only one who could protect her. I won't go into his backstory, but an unhealthy amount of delusions feed into his obsession as well.

The game is fun and intense, and I highly recommend it if you would like to cry. Check out my Why you should play Nightshade PowerPoint here:

If you're looking for other good otome games with fun yandere characters, I also recommend: Amnesia: Memories, Taisho x Alice, and Mystic Messenger.

After Kuroyuki, I started reading a lot of Japanese webnovels with yandere characters (I literally have a page in my browser with just the yandere tag on shousetsuka ni narou that I browse thru regularly) I could probably do a whole post just about yandere characters in webnovels, but for a quick recommendation, I suggest checking out Kotoko-sensei's (琴子) works or, for something a bit more bizarre, check out Inaida-sensei's (稲井田そう) works. (I once went thru a phase where I was obsessed with all of Inaida-sensei's works around 2~3 years ago.)

Anyways, on to the final question!

What are some yanderes that you like the least?

Well, I tend to dislike the yandere characters that are not well thought out. It's easy enough to put a knife in a character's hand or make them shove someone in a cage, but it's not interesting unless they have a compelling reason why. What leads them to decide they have no other choice but to kill a rival (or their target) or take away their target's freedom?

This is why I tend to dislike side characters who are yandere (especially in harem series) because they're usually not given a whole lot of depth or character building - like a main character would have.

I think a lot of the appeal from yandere characters comes from their depth, complexity, and how they can be hypocritical by nature. I love them but I hate them because they care about other people. I don't want to scare them but I need to protect them. I don't care if they hate me as long as they stay by my side.

If I were to name a yandere character I dislike, though, I would have to say Yuno Gasai (from Future Diary) who is a rather famous case. I don't think she's a bad character - in fact, she's a really great character and a good example of what happens if obsession is left to fester in a high-stakes, dangerous environment. But her character has been boiled down to crazy anime girl who kills a bunch of people for her crush by the internet, which has completely changed the way many people view the word and perceive the trope of "yandere." I just find it irritating and as the self-proclaimed saleswoman of yandere, it makes my job a lot harder.

Can yandere be considered problematic? Sure, absolutely. But does it have to involve murder, rape, gore, or other triggering content? Absolutely not.

(This goes for this whole post, but please note that I am talking about fictional characters, and this in no way reflects real life people)

All in all, I'm very passionate about yandere characters and yandere content. I just find them so compelling, and especially love exploring relationships involving a yandere character - because it usually involves having to come to some sort of compromise. I could probably rant on and on and on about it but this answer is already so long lol

I’m so happy i wasn’t the only utterly grossed out and disgusted by Lila’s and Fives relationship.

Five didnt even get out of his school boy uniform till season 3 now your throwing him in a relationship with a woman 15 years older than him. This isnt the early 2000’s anymore, and lots of your watchers have already gone through their Pretty little liars faze and realized how disgusting and toxic arias and Ezra's relationship is.

Also still dosent work the other way cause now you’re throwing a 58 year old man at a 35 year old woman. Still 15 years senior, just slightly less disgusting because at least in that case shes not barely legal anymore.

Final battles.

The kakushi were busy cleaning up the place, taking the fallen slayers to a proper rest.

Finally the haunting human eating demons demolished, leaving behind the bitter memory of loss and victory.

......

" serpent and love hashira over there..!! Rescuers go to them fastt!!!" A shout from a male kakushi shocked her.

"Ok!" she take her aid box, running and preparing to save and rescue the lovebirds.

She late.

Their bodies already cold, hugging each other as tight as they can. The serpent hashira's strip haori full with blood covering the love hashira's body.

"I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry," tears falling down. She remind herself to be tough, taking her deep breath, she checked on the late hashiras. Kaburamaru hiss at her, shocking her a bit.

"kaburamaru-kun, it's may be a rude request, but i hope you can allow me to take care of your love one and give them rest they deserve..."

It's taking a bit of time to mellow the little devastating serpent. Even animals feel the grieve. Another kakushi come over to help her. Taking the little serpent slowly, though he almost get bitten and put it in a little carrier.

After that, she try to move and separate their bodies. It's hard. The grip was too tight- there's no way, she, as a medical practitioner could tell an approximate time of death, and both of the hashira weren't died so long before they find them. The bodies shouldn't be as stiff like this.

"what happened,"

"iguro-sama grip is too tight...i couldn't let him go"

"i see" her male friend then come and help her. Yup. This is hard. Tears slowly flowing again in her cheeks.

........

"U know the green sock kanroji-sama wear? Seems like it was a gift from the serpent hashira. So adorable "

She looked at her friend, talking happily about Kanroji and Iguro.

"well, they are always together aren't they, i feel like it's an open secret at this point."

She just comeback from kanroji estate, to send some stuff from ubayashiki household. As expected the love hashira was really kind to her, offering her some tea and sakura mochi, though she couldn't stay long there. She smiled at her friends. Everyone feel happy for Kanroji.

"Wahh maybe we could prepare some new cloth for their wedding or something. Kanroji sama must invited us.!" She looked at her friend while laughing.

"what are u? Their parents? That's was overreacting??" She laughed- although she would like to.

.........

And not anymore. It shattered. It's no brainer aren't it? Both hashiras were dedicated slayers to kill muzan, of course death will kiss them first.

Her thought make her face red, she's angry. Yes. Why would this stupid creatures are here at the first place? Why her family getting killed with no reason? Why the two kind hearted people could not be together in this lifetime?

"Iguro-sama, please let us take care both of your to rest, I'm really sorry."

After half than hour, the grip finally loosen up. The kakushi carefully moved them in two separate stretcher.

She's then try to move the haori to check on Kanroji's injury. Her eyes grown big. Her hands...her hands.

"Shizou san, yamato san, can u please help me, moved them, i has some task to do,'

"oh ok"

She run as fast as her could, in between the rubbles, her hand try to reach out, finding a part of Kanroji herself.

She found one and another one not too far away from the late hashiras location. It's totally in shambles. A pair of hand that used to give her delicious sakura mochi, cooked them delicious western food that they never taste before is no longer moved. She couldn't held her tears, she cried.

'I want to meet and enjoying your sakura mochi again, kanroji sama.'

Walking back, she wrapped the hands in white clothes before bringing it to kanroji.

"I'll take care of both of them once we arrived at butterfly estate. Please give the message to kanroji and iguro sama kasugai crows, bring the news to their families and friends"

"ok"

......

Their graves always clean and tidy. She knew it, Kanroji parents seem dedicated to come almost everyday, cleaning both graves. She too, putting flowers and prayers for all the slayers. It's become her habit.

For her, life must go on for those who leave behind but her sweet memories of them will never fade.

shoutout to the scene in i7 first beat where nagi and tsumugi are casually chatting like you know who’s SUPER COOL? chiba shizou and you know who’s a GREAT HUSBAND? chiba shizou and yamato is also hanging out with them and looks like he wants to kill himself

that “Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again” anime is comedy but the way they make the “innocent incest” jokes is super hilarious to me

So the anime is set up in a way that compiles smaller stories of the life of Grandma Ine and Grandpa Shizou. They have a son, who is married to a woman and they have a daughter together

Ages aren’t mentioned, the grandpa only revealed that they have been together for at least 70 years, and their granddaughter is likely a middle schooler

anyway, from the first episode on the granddaughter thinks her grandpa is super hot. She asks him to play at being her boyfriend

the Son’s wife discovers the de-aged (?) grandparents next and has a similar reaction like her daughter, she actually has to go to the bathroom and calm down because the grandpa is a hottie haha

they’re both fans of male idols and think the grandpa fits the image

then their son, daughter and his wife meet the grandparents together. The son is not surprised, but rather frustrated he wasn’t told of this sooner

he asks his daughter if that’s what she was playing at with her grandpa being her bf, she says her grandpa got what she was playing at and she was just “so happy”

right after she cuddles her grandpa, her mom chastises her and protests “this isn’t allowed, not even in fiction!”

they bicker with each other over grandpa, this gets grandma jealous and grandpa says he only has eyes for grandma, which earns him a slap (mainly for enticing their granddaughter hahaha)

later on the granddaughter learns that her grandpa was actually in an arranged marriage before marrying grandma and grandma was the one who scared the girl he was promised to away

He says her grandma acted really cool, so the granddaughter wishes to reenact the scene.

The grandma does so, says something like “you will never have my man!” which in turn impresses the granddaughter so much that she hugs her grandma and says “I love grandpa, but I love you very much too!”

this in turn causes the grandpa to become jealous and the episode ends with him saying “I’m so glad I married grandma” hahaha

Here's my third Halloween themed piece: Godzilla fighting off five famous Hollywood monsters who have become kaiju.  This is inspired by an unfinished fan film that was being directed and produced by former Toho employee Shizou Nakajima titled Wolfman vs Godzilla.  Along with the wkolfman (who's design here is close to what was used in the fan film) I figured it would be neat if Godzilla faced off against the other movie monsters as well.  From left to right you have Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman, Dracula, the Gillman, and the Mummy.  If this was a new fan film, the origins of each of the monsters would be pretty much the same as the movies they appeared in only their bodies would be mutated into giant kaiju either through radiation or some supernatural means.  This would mark my first time drawing Godzilla himself.  I mainly based the design off of the upcoming Godzilla: Minus One film while adding some Monsterverse aesthetics and jaws similar to Kaprosuchus (AKA Boar Croc).

I might squeeze in one more Halloween themed piece before the month ends but time will tell.

Godzilla belongs to Toho and the Hollywood monster belong to Universal Pictures.
