            Shirley Manson is a Scottish music artist who is best known for being the lead singer of the band Garbage. Garbage is based in America and Scotland. She started performing in the music industry as a teenager and is today considered one of the greatest women in rock music. Garbage released their first album in 1995, which was a huge success which was followed by more hit albums.

            Manson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was named after her aunty who was named after Charlotte Bronte’s book, Shirley. Manson was bullied during school which caused her to suffer depression, the bullying stopped when she joined a rougher type of crowd. She didn’t attend her last year at school, instead did cannabis, drank, and stole. She worked as a waitress and retail and started working with several local bands.

            Manson has been married twice, and lives in Los Angeles as well as Edinburgh. She is more spiritual than religious, she stopped going to church when she was aged 12. Manson is a feminist and is admired by women all over the world.

            Shirley Manson a huge lover of music was asked by Rolling Stone magazine for a list of her most memorable albums she has listened to. Manson on Adam and the Ants album Dirk Wears White Sox (1979) ‘This was the first record I was ever finger fucked to! So it will remain in my mind for ever more.’

GARBAGE @ O2 APOLLO, MANCHESTER

A dream shoot indeed, as Garbage and Shirley Manson always have that special something and tonight was no different than the two occasions I have photographed them before in 2012 and 2018.

We were allowed additional access, which doesn't happen that often. This meant we could shoot from anywhere in the venue after the first 3 songs, apart from the pit. This does mean that you either have to scramble into the crowd (it was packed) or go onto the balcony, so lugging two heavy cameras and my camera case I ventured upstairs and could barely breathe from the weight. I took a few shots (but wasn't happy with the lighting) and then headed home, with the brilliant sounds of the band ringing in my ears, wishing I was watching from the front row.

I was shooting for O2 Apollo, Manchester and Academy Music Group as their house photographer this evening. Alongside providing images for the Louder Than War review. You can read this here:

I went to see Metric, Garbage, and Noel Gallagher in philadelphia last night. And while concert overall was amazing, it has reignited my 90s crush for music/fashion icon Shirley Manson. What a fucking stellar performance. 😭😍

…and because my phone is 4yrs old and takes shitty concert photos, I stole this from google at the Saratoga springs show cuz she wore the same outfit. ❤️

Look at how gorgeous she is. I’m in love. Maybe in some alternate universe I could meet her someday 🥰
