*rolls o v e r* I want angst for UpbeatDreams: Especially just unsure Nate trying to cope with his feelings and trying to seek on what to do with just out right saying it? He would jus try to hint to his friends ( like mads or kit ) about the possibility of liking Ayu but he always back out and just plays it off as nothing when he’s questioned about it directly? Plus things probably get so chaotic when Natemare strikes, like the soft boy doesn’t have a lot on his plate already-

➭ nate is. actually really good at figuring out his feelings for people, like pretty early on he realizes that he wants to befriend ayu, then be closer to him, and eventually hes like heck yeah there are real feelings here! nate just. has hard time putting those into words and telling them to other people? not only just like the target of his admiration, but everyone. if someone asks if he likes someone, hes just gonna shrug and not admit them to anyone else than to himself

➭ so while he thinks talking to his friends about this and wanting to date ayu and take him out and smooch the violin boys precious little face, nate just. cant get anything out of his mouth? he starts with like ‘hey can we talk’ like somewhat serious actually and when he is sitting down with whoever he wants to talk about this nate just pulls a joke or two out and changes to subject (”hey i actually just wanted to ask about homework” “do you have any recent fave songs im looking for new stuff to cover” etc.). and people do notice that.. hes not being super genuine about what he wants to talk about, but since people know nate mostly as a very open person, they dont want to push the issue cause if they see its something he doesnt want to talk about, they are afraid pushing it will make his open personality die down and shut him off tbh

➭ only when its natemare it gets honestly out there. but with natemare’s case, since people dont take him super seriously with what he does and what he says (cause he throws around a lot of stuff and says things that people know not to be true and he jokes about everything terribly and yeah), it just kinda gets lost in translation. its taken as a cruel joke when nate(mare) goes on a ramble in ayu’s face how much he likes them, and that just. honestly doesnt end too well tbh (if we wanna combine this with the bffnate canon, this happens either during the halloween party, so kit will hear about this later but isnt present when it goes down)

➭ so ayu and nate have somewhat of a fallout at this point. ayu is hurt by the things said to him cause even tho it was basically a confession, the way it was framed it sounded like a condescending joke, hes just. nope ayu is just done with nate. who still does their best to get everything in order between them, like he doesnt really know what he did that hurt ayu so badly (probably multiple mutual friends are really yelling at him at the point cause nate what the hell) and he just. wants to make things right. and hes trying to also fix things between him and kit at the moment and its all such a mess and ugh

➭ and after the feather incident with kit, nate finally gets the courage together to actually make the decision to talk to ayu and try to fully figure it out. cause if what he did hurt kit like this, my god what could have this done to the boy he Liked? so nate finds one of those days where ayu has secluded himself to the recording booth with his violin, and nate tracks down this violin boy so its just the two of them in the studio and. hes going to take this chance to talk to ayu, nate is so determined to do this, like usually he gives in if people dont wanna do something with him, but my god he just NEEDS to talk with ayu no matter what

➭ so its. kinda awkward. ayu doesnt wanna be there with the boy who hurt their feelings like that, nate wants to know whats wrong.. and ultimately after a somewhat heated conversation ayu lets it out cause hes just exhausted and wants nate to leave him alone cause he cant take it and just. blurts out everything that natemare told him about nate feelings for him that halloween night and ayu is trying to keep himself together while nate just quietly stares at him like. i said that? cause thats. all true tho im sorry it had to come up like that but its true

➭ and like ayu is getting anxious but he allows nate to hug him cause the sincere concern over this crying boy and the apologetic eyes nate have are genuine and ayu can sense that and nate just. stands there with him in the booth holding him close and petting his hair like. im sorry i did all that. it didnt mean to let it out like that, ive been wanting to tell you but not this way nope this isnt how i wanted to make it happen and im so sorry it came out so wrong but. i do like you. forgive me please?

➭ ayu is kinda hesitant but nate is seriously sorry and wants to better himself so. he is forgiven. to which nate responds with a happy smile, another quick hug to ayu and a kiss on the cheek, promising to leave ayu to play in peace again but they should have breakfast tomorrow together and nate leaves him there all confused and blushing cause was thAT A KISS AND A DATE INVITE???

(➭ the following morning they have breakfast together and nate. sneakily finds ways to hold ayu’s hand whenever he can, during breakfast and walking to class and it just. kinda builds up from there tbh. slow and steady and they like never exactly talk about it being official or anything like that, it just kinda happens little by little over time aaaaaa)

Can I, have some asagao!nate headcanons but it’s when spring rolls around and he’s just extremely happy? Like I bet he’s just in a friend loving mood as well so what does this chirpy, spring boy do whilst he’s like this? :o

tbh ive been thinking about this a lot today sO!

➭ k so first of all when it starts to get like dry and warm outside, nate is. really easy to find being there like all the time? like he can be sitting pretty much anywhere (literally aNYWHERE cause this boio likes to climb things cause hes reckless) on campus, most often with his guitar, just singing out his hearts content tbh

➭ he just sings a lot in general. you can hear him humming to himself if he needs to be more quiet in like class or the library or in a study session when someone manages to rope him into one, but more often hes just singing out loud. and i mean, most people dont mind it if they are around cause nate has a nice voice and since hes feeling happy and positive, the songs are around that very much as well? unless someone has a special song request, cause nate absolutely takes those as long as he knows the song, but other than that its mostly just really upbeat and happy stuff!

➭ hes. freaking energetic yo. like its established that this boi rarely sleeps? well when spring comes, he does sleep more cause theres more natural light, so the darkness isnt that big of an issue most of the time anymore, so nate can sleep yay! so he has energy. a LOT of energy. that he uses most often for singing/song writing/especially playing the drums or just. causing a general chaos by climBING EVERYWHERE nate pls stop

➭ also yes for friend loving mood tho?? its not just that him being so peppy and energetic might get contagious to others, but nate just. goes on his way even more so than usually to remind people he likes them. he gives a lot of hugs. he lifts the smols up in the air and gives more piggyback rides. in general hes like more kind physically? like he has a lot of love in him and he likes to express it within peoples comfort limits ofc, but nate has a lot to give and especially when he has the energy for it, hes so not afraid to show it

➭ also since nate gets a lot out of his system during spring and can sleep and has energy to function like the person hes supposed to be, he actually does show up in classes a lot more often. this also is the time that proves to others that this boi isnt just a dumb rebel as he might come across, he just. doesnt like sitting and learning. hes not dumb, nate just hates school. spring time is really the one time of the year when you can really see him being there tho, just blasting through his classes cause he has that energy and motivation to do so finally

➭ okay so its. established that nate is the hot water bottle friend, yes? hes never cold and he gives the warmest hugs and so forth. so when spring rolls around, hes. the first person to get the shorts and tank tops out for casual clothing. even if its not. technically that kind of weather yet but nate doesnt care. he rocks that style either way cause ooh boio

➭ nate is also like. just in general super excited about seeing flowers when they start blooming. like okay he doesnt necessarily know which flowers are which or anything like that (he would often get corrected by whoever was close by that knew more about flowers tbh), but hes just. SO EXCITED to see the world come alive again and all the colors and just flowers and ah. he just LOVES it

➭ probably the best way to describe dan in general is that hes just. like a giant puppy. hes always just happy and loves your company and is very social and just a giant ball of fluff and happiness tbh. like he pretty much just radiates all those good vibes outside all the time

➭ i think its needless to say but. MUSIC BOI. tho with dan im imagining that he does music more like his early days in the asagao canon? like imagine skyhill or northern hues instead of nsp. some starbomb sprinkled into the middle with arin tho would be fine i guess? more sfw version maybe tho➭ just in general he really love singing tbh. he’ll take every opportunity he can to sing, no matter where he is, whos around, what hes singing - he will sing. and he loves it

➭ i feel like he would also be somewhat involved with the theater stuff? even more so if they have occasional comedy/improv nights. dan is most definitely there then tbh

➭ ive also been personally headcanoning him as a fourth year student? so yeah we’ll go with that

➭ similar to the normal boots and hidden block gaming clubs, dan is likewise part of a club like that, tho its treated even more so like just a tight circle of friends than like an actual club. so hi yes there is a game grumps club in asagao fight me➭ also yes this means that the rest of the grump fam is also in this canon and nobody can convince me otherwise

➭ hes tall, hes messy (both looks-wise and with his surroundings), hes loud - but man if he isnt an open person and loving towards everyone and hes just. constantly happy. people might find him intimidating at first cause of his looks, but hes really easy to instantly like and befriend, and hes gonna treat you like a best friend right off the bat

3. are they a good cook?

they're...alright? they can make most easy/instant meals and they're good with breakfast foods like pancakes or scrambled eggs. they can follow recipes okay but they might need some help

10. does silence bother your character? if so, what would they do about it?

total silence is Very unnerving for them. it's one thing if they're outside and they can hear bugs and wind n shit but if they're in their room? bad times. it's part of why they play music during the night so they don't get paranoid

12. is your character prone to picking fights or non-confrontational?

oh avery Wishes they were confrontational. they have so many opinions but they suck at articulating them, especially verbally. (getting too emotional can also cause amoroz to manifest so they just repress whatever they can and try not to get too pissed off)

18. what would a typical day-dream of theirs be about?

they're a total maladaptive daydreamer tbh. most of their daydreams revolve around what they've been writing recently, or anything they've read/watched in the same vein

24. is your character easily scared?

oh yeah. they're basically incapable of playing video games or watching movies/tv shows that are legitimately scary or even just have an unsettling atmosphere. their paranoia runs wild with that. at one point someone in normal boots dared them to watch a horror movie with the sound up and the lights off and they had vivid nightmares for a week straight

I said I was gonna say more but I passed out but anyway: Nate often plays/listens to music when he’s stressed? Usually you can tell how he’s feeling by the tone of his music. Whenever he’s angry, he just some angry plucks of his guitar with this >:( expression. Also Nate just has some weird instruments and has them on hand for different situations? Like maracas!! He just plays them when there’s a tense situation incoming (and usually gets chased or those bastardly things swiped off him.)

like you can easily tell from the way he jams to the music hes listening to or how he plays the guitar how hes feeling. when you question him about it tho, nate will just pull on a smile and say everythings okay. also no he doesnt wanna talk about it. his problems are his problems and he’ll figure them out through music unless hes really pushed with his back against the wall and forced to talk it out with someone tbh

also like. people would be so done with him just pulling out random instruments out of nowhere at the most inopportune times and just playing them for dramatic effect and. most of the time i feel like it would fall on ayu to stop him like “no nate this isnt appropriate but the maracas away pLS”. and from that point forward ayu always needs to double check with nate before they go pretty much anywhere outside of the dorm that nate isnt carrying anything weird with him (tho somehow he usually manages to slip at least something in his pocket or in an extra pouch in his guitar case or something. or just a random kazoo in the inside pocket of his vest)

Mads and Ayu are writing buddies, that’s just a fact. Y’know that poetry night you mentioned once? Ayu would be so up for that as he adores literature, he can get carried away with it and such. He’ll be there for Mads if she’s a lil nervous and everything and the both of them are generally supportive of each other’s works. They also share each other’s characters!! If any angst ideas occur, the other is just in utter pain like, ‘i like this, a LOT, buT WHY YOU WOULD DO THIS TO THEM??’

➭ since mads can be. a little bit on the secretive side about her writing and stuff, as she doesnt super want to share it with the world, i would. imagine the first time ayu hears about it is through nate tho? who heard about it from kit who knows this stuff cause they are definitely her biggest enablers tho lol. but this also ties it together why/how nate calls mads ‘fanfiction girl’ (just like he calls ayu the ‘violin boy’ mmmm) and ayu would probably overhear this in a conversation or nate just refers to mads at him with that and ayu is just. completely confused. until nate breaks it down to kit’s roommate and oops there it is

➭ ayu wouldnt like. be pushing the issue about getting to learn about her writing, hes just casually interested whenever mads is around with her notebook and such, until one day shes just. ready to burst cause she probably finished something finally and she needs to share it with someone and ayu just happens to be there when shes ready to lay down all the details of what shes been working on

➭ mads would also. very often go to ayu for advice and ideas? if kit isnt around, ayu is the next person she thinks about asking if things she does make sense or if things should be this or that way

➭ the poetry night tho! (i still really want this to be a thing asdkjansda) like mads is super tentative on even going, let alone participating in the readings cause shes like. super nervous and everyone is going to be better at it than her and shes just a mess. ayu is honestly probably the one person that could convince her to do it tho? like yeah cue in any other friends and/or significant others, literally everyone else would just be too loud and crazy cheering in the audience, but ayu would just be there like. more as an emotional than vocal support. just giving smiles and thumbs up from the audience and its way less stressful for her to deal with that these other screaming kids like oh my god kit and nate would be a good cheer squad but in this situation? nOPE

➭ also imagine like. mads sends something written with her characters to ayu in the middle of the night (especially in mads’ cases in the middle of the night cause thats how she rolls, all the best stuff ends up being finished around two or three in the morning tbh), just being like ‘hey heres a thing for you to read when you wake up!’ and it takes maybe ten minutes for ayu to respond cause hes up late studying and its just keysmashes and all caps ‘MADS I NEED TO STUDY FOR TOMORROWS TEST (you should also btw) I DIDNT NEED TO CRY TONIGHT WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS’ and thats just. how nights go regularly with them texting tbh

cougHS based on the tags in that last reply brings up the ideas: Nate gets nervous in the dark? Probably due to a whole ton of reasons so he always tries to stay awake and just, doesn’t turn the lights off. He’ll try to seek comfort if he’s just that out of it and that exhausted but he just needs someone there because the darkness is that nerving to him. He never really likes to sleep alone, (when he tries to sleep anyway.) i just want more stuff about these thingies aAA

➭ you see. there is a reason why natemare only appears when its starting to get dark. its because he literally lurks for nate in the darkness➭ of course this doesnt mean hes physically there. but knowing how nate is and how big part of natemare is of his thought process and what hes created out of him, nate still. sees him there. the dark eyes. the grin. just the silhouette that makes nate think of himself but also hes right here oh my god what is happening

➭ unless he just straight up passes out of exhaustion, nate absolutely needs someone to be there with him for him to even consider sleeping. if hes alone, no, its just too much. the darkness will get him. and its not like, enough if you are in the same room. physical contact is required, the more the better

➭ light. there always needs to be light. at least one light source is required for nate to feel comfortable enough to relax and close his eyes. the more the better tbh. if anyone ever questions him about it, nate wont admit a thing. he just likes the lights that all

➭ nate doesnt have even nearly as much of a problem with darkness if hes in an open area. he can be outside at night time (also thankfully asagao is equipped with light posts), its the quiet dark rooms and limited spaces that make it that much more difficult for him. when you can see where your space ends, its much easier for him to start feeling trapped and let the mind run wild to make all the things in the darkness come to life➭ this is also much of why he never goes down to the underground tunnels alone, despite being a frequent visitor. its too dark and with just him and a flashlight he cant do it. nate always needs someone to be there with him

➭ you can tell hes getting nervous about the darkness if he thinks theres not enough light/company for him, when he starts to quietly sing or hum to himself. its his way to try to relief stress in the anxiety situation, but at the same time he might have. convinced himself once or twice at least that his voice is whats also bringing the shadow monsters to him, especially if hes alone

➭ all of this happens much, much more frequently at the end of september and during october, when natemare is happening tbh

Tbh Ayu’s dorm basically becomes Nate’s 2nd dorm with how much he likes to sleep in there, Ayu forgets how many times he goes (or tries to) to sleep and Nate is just there with him because he’ll make up a half decent excuse that he doesn’t wanna walk back there and it’s late anyway. Ayu just, lets him sleep there. Just no more complaining shhhhhh.

nate can make all the excuses he wants but i know he just doesnt wanna sleep alone cause hes mildly afraid of the dark tho

Dude, I get you- To be honest when I started to listen to podcasts at first that was my problem since I just couldn’t pay attention or fell asleep during it and then I had to rewind to hear what I missed but eventually you get used to it? Took me a while though, but gradually it did!! But i am here to ramble about dca for you man, I also forget that chris did a sock puppet show of the first two seasons so, i mean, got half an hour to spare you can always just watch the puppet show version JSKWK

I love your idea so I’m ramblin: these two look after each other with their mutism, just the mutual understanding of their anxieties they push through it. I like to imagine they have some sort of code they follow if one of them shuts down even if it’s really subtle? It may not look like anything to others but either one is able to understand if, even if it’s just a number of taps or touching certain colours, they both get it. Ayu is there to offer peaceful violin music for Mads if necessary!!

➭ it might take a while but after seeing each other struggling with these things they both kinda pick up that hey somethings up here and they. eventually get talking about it? cause its kind of a big deal and its pretty obvious to the other since they struggle with these issues too, so yeah. they def end up bonding over it tbh

➭ since ayu would be the more physically capable when shutting down, i’d imagine its easier to see when hes struggling/he can more easily still communicate it to the outside? and depending on whats causing it and/or how severe it is, he gives out a different sign - be it tapping on whatever surface he can find for a certain number of times, specific objects that hes grabbing, certain colors hes signaling with, etc., its all agreed beforehand so mads knows whats up and how to handle the situation, if she needs to step in or take ayu away from things and whatnot

➭ with mads its. slightly more difficult cause when she shuts down, she shuts down entirely. she doesnt talk, pretty much her entire body goes to freeze mode, she’ll avoid eye contact and just pretty much anything that would make anyone pay any attention to her whatsoever. tho i mean if you know the signs, its easy to detect especially with the way she avoid eye contact cause despite her anxieties mads is. really good at holding eye contact tho lmao. but yeah, usually the best way to deal with that with her is to try to take her out of the situation and just get her somewhere to calm down - and avoid physical contact unless she initiates it

➭ despite which one of them is having an anxious mutism moment, afterwards they take a moment to calm down together, usually locking up together in either ones dorm room, if ayu is capable he’ll play the violin and if not, its mads putting on some calming playlist. they have lava lamps and/or scented candles (probably depending on which room they are in) and just. i wanna say lay on the floor and chill for a hot second. do breathing exercises. anything just really quiet and calming to try to get back to the norm
