I don't know what you're reading, but I would never describe them as completely different. Sure, they ARE different characters, but if anything is similar about them, it is their personalities and the role they play in the story.

They are both very dedicated and passionate about their corresponding passions despite neither of them having "natural talent." Instead of giving up, they keep working hard to show themselves that they can follow the path they want to despite what others (Vivid Street (Arata) in Akitos's case and their dad in Ena's) around them have to say about it.

They're both very blunt whether they mean to be rude or not, but they both also care a lot about the people around them, especially their units and each other even if they don't show it in normal ways.

Their inferiority in their talents also brings the fact that both of them experience jealousy for people who show they have more talent which is shown in both of their focus events a lot

Neither of them is very academically gifted mostly through a lack of interest

And theres a lot more which im sure someone less tired than me would love to tell me in the notes :)

the 4komas even riff on them often acting very similar

+ Their BNW quotes literally mean the same thing

the whole thing with them both really like cheesecake and pancakes but hate carrots is also meant to be a nod to their similarities

people have a tendency to demonise Ena for being mean or violent or whatever people want to call her. but what Ena is usually criticised for Akito typically isn't (cough cough this fanbase has a history of being very male-biased which I hate)

Akito is also mean, he was a dick to everyone in his unit in the main story at some point and he often pulls pranks on the people in his school (Tsukasa) just to highlight a few easy things

AND FOR THE VIOLENT THING.

People have a tendency to highlight Ena scratching Akito when she was stressed out in middle school. and not to generalise. but. i am convinced you people are only children AND did not read the VBS main story

siblings fight, it's normal, especially in a household like the Shinonomes with the whole emotionally neglectful dad thing they got going on, i fought with my brother a lot as a kid and it happens. I'm not saying it's great and everyone should be attacking their siblings but the people who focus on Ena scratching Akito seem to magically forget.

AKITO PUNCHED TOYA HARD ENOUGH FOR HIM TO BE BRUISED IN THE MAIN STORY.

I've seen people make the argument that Akito can be excused cuz of the circumstances it happened being stressful and made him angry. But that clearly ignores what Ena was going through in middle school.

saying "Ena scratching Akito was a common occurrence but Akito only punched someone once" just does not feel like a good enough argument at all.

I'll say it again. stop babying the male characters. if you're gonna excuse Akito punching Toya in the head and not excuse Ena when she was in MIDDLE SCHOOL then I don't know what to tell you

i think a large part of their dynamic is carried by their similarities - they share a lot of the same key traits and they tend to but heads due to it but they do care about each other a lot in their own sibling way. I also just relate to them both a lot lmao

if someone wants to make a legitimate argument for how the Shinonomes are very different in personality, be my guest feel free to rb with what you think

but in my opinion at the VERY LEAST they share so much of their personalities and with how much Ena is demonised by some of this fandom it's a red flag to me to like Akito and hate Ena.

(Possible spoilers!!) Have you ever thought about how maybe one of the reasons why Kaito gets so upset whenever someone claims to "know" what Miu wants/likes is because that's probably what her stalker did? Claim to know her better than herself/her family?

Yes! It seemed like that guy made a lot of claims about what Miu wanted and how she felt that weren't true but that their parents believed anyway. Seeing as Kaito is generally the one who's more hung up on what happened back then (namely that he didn't notice sooner and stop it), it makes sense that that would be why he overreacts to anything that even slightly reminds him of it. If the last time someone tried to tell him they know what she wants, they were trying to manipulate him into letting them hurt her, he wouldn't exactly be keen on letting anyone else get away with it, even if their intentions are innocent.

On that note, hot take but I think that whole situation is also the reason he gets Weird™️about Takuma asking about what he loves about Miu. Cuz understandably I feel like most people's initial reaction to him saying he's not into his sister seemingly unprovoked is "hey what the fuck?" But like,,,in the context of everything they've been through, I can see how being asked if there's some reason he cares about her so much would read like an accusation to him. Like he was being compared to that guy. I mean, it kinda was a weird question to begin with--why would he need a reason to care about his sister?

Slightly unrelated tangent but I personally always found it weird that the other characters acted like it was weird that he worried about her so much. Like bro that's his baby sister. She's 2 apples tall. Even without the tragic backstory any half-decent brother would be worried alkkfdjak.

Anyways on the note of what they were like in the Before Times, just the other day I was telling one of my friends about how much I love MarineAngemon as a partner for Miu. Bc thinking about how...oh hell I haven't played this game in a MINUTE, I think it was the fake Syakomon(?) that accused her of pretending to like things she hates and hate things she likes + how she loved how cute the amusement park mons were + the way Kaito talks about her I feel like he's not actually being totally delulu about how cute she is. I feel like she probably did act a lot more cutesy but stopped because of Certain Life Events. So having her mega be something very small and very cute but still very strong is Neat, I think. Like she got a piece of her real self back and isn't so afraid of it anymore.

I'm also pretty positive that Kaito's always been a doting loser alfdkja. Like,,,his response to Minoru being worried about him letting Miu boss him around was just "hey how long do you think I've been doing this big brother thing for" lmao. Literally 0 backbone on that boy. As long as it isn't dangerous, Miu gets whatever Miu wants ToT And Miu saying he used to always pat her head wtf why are they so cute.

ALSO I NOTICED THEY BOTH REFER TO TAKING DOWN THE MASTER AS GOING AFTER THE "FINAL BOSS" SO YOU CANNOT TELL ME THEY DIDN'T PLAY A LOT OF VIDEO GAMES TOGETHER. NERDS WHO BOTH USE VIDEO GAME TERMINOLOGY IRL I LOVE THEM.

Anyways thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about Miu and Kaito again, I miss them dearly every day of my life and think about them constantly.

She tries too hard to be liked by your sister, that she ends up faking a little too much, which isn't something your sister likes.

It isn't until she lets be herself more that your sister finally realizes why you love her so much

They get along in the end, even talking and hanging out from time to time

"Ah, I saw your sister today at a cafe. We even chatted a little. Thank god she doesn't hate me" "Told you. You just needed to be yourself. She does like you now"

Ootori Emu

Emu would probably get along pretty easily with your sibling

She might be a little too noisy for some people, but luckily your brother doesn't mind that

He puts all the "you better don't hurt beloved sibling" act at first but was quickly dropped after seeing how much of a sushine Emu is

It doesn't take long until he basically treats Emu like family. She does the same.

omg thank you for this ask haha. originally i was going to do a ranking but they all have different charms so i kind of changed it to a grading (although you can take the order they appear in as a sort of ranking bc that’s how i originally wrote it). anyway bear in mind that i’m sure no matter what, all potential issues get resolved and they all get properly approved of~

kaga: A

even if we tried to pretend it wouldn’t be him it’s IMPOSSIBLE for him to not top this list since it’s canon that shoma thinks that kaga is too good for his sister lmao. i think about how supportive kaga is of his mc’s family every single day of my life and that time that he took shoma all around tokyo and had that talked with him all night (while mc fell asleep on the sofa and kaga stroked her hair and repositioned her head onto his lap RIGHT IN FRONT OF SHOMA HELP TOO CUTE) and it makes me all warm and softe. if not for canon, i would probably rank him in 2nd or 3rd but IT’S CANON SO!!!!! kagainu is my hlitf otp ;sldkfsj

sorry couldn’t help myself. i bet shoma would think he’s just so cool, dressed in his sukajan and supreme tshirt. momose has style coming out of his fingertips and a guy of shoma’s age who evidently cares enough about fashion to critique his sister’s socks would literally be drooling and taking notes. 

goto: A

basically bc goto is a normal person lmao. goto is serious and genuine to the point where his sincerity even reflected in his name (誠) and i think his love for his mc always, always shines through very purely. i think shoma and goto would get along bc shoma is around the same age (maybe a little older?) as issei so goto is kind of used to dealing with younger siblings of that age.  

soma: B

soma’s primary professional skill is his ability to fit smoothly into any social situation and change his mannerisms into the ideal for whatever the situation calls for, so i think he could easily charm mc’s family. with that said, shoma is very perceptive and might be suspicious of how smooth soma is and why someone who’s so sophisticated is with his sister? soma is someone who hides his true self from everyone (including even his mc) so i wonder what it’ll take to get him to open up to shoma fully. with that said, shoma is like his sister in that he’s really good at opening people up, and also soma is like SO STUPIDLY WHIPPED when it comes to his mc. tbh i’m excited to see him meet the family bc soma is so emotionally detached from family matters bc of his trauma that i honestly wonder how he would react, seeing how cheerful and lively mc’s family is (especially seeing her interactions with her younger sibling being similar to his interactions with his younger sibling ahhhh I’M emotional thinking about it).

kurosawa: B

bro i was stumped on this forever, so i just chucked him here. originally i had him right at the bottom bc in my mind, tooru is forever a CLOWN but then i thought about it more seriously lol. honestly kurosawa is a master manipulator moodmaker and he’d know just what to say to get along with shoma. also, he can be serious when it comes down to it too. he has a really youthful spirit (lmao) and he’s also the same age as the mc so i think he and shoma could get along really well.

shinonome: B

ayumu, aka mr perfect, is another one who would put on a good face for meeting the family. i don’t think he will win over shoma’s trust through his words but rather through his actions. honestly i really want to know what ayumu is going to say about his mc to her family since he is rarely honest to her and can barely be honest about his feelings to even himself. tbh i have the feeling there’s going to be some kind of drama and then he will prove himself and his love for her through his actions (as he always does!) but i do also think that we’ll get to see ayumu being proper and courteous about his mc for once. honestly it was such a pleasant surprise to see kaga being so polite and nice at his mc’s home. i wonder if shoma will ever find out how ayumu really treats his beloved sister...

ishigami: B/C

ishigami is kind of serious and stern but he was very serious about meeting his mc’s family. i think shoma was at least won over by the gold pudding? i originally had him ranked up #3 but then i dropped him a little bc i do wonder what shoma would think about the fact that ishigami broke up with his mc tho (compared to the fact that he leaves his sister in kaga’s hands bc kaga is so steadfastly serious about being with her always). obviously ishigami has his mc’s best interests at heart always but i think he hasn’t quite resolved his issues re: family yet and may not necessarily be able to open up to shoma until then. 

namba: C

i guess the biggest issue is the age thing? and namba isn’t necessarily like kaga who tends to be very sure of himself and their relationship; he’s a little more hard on himself (i don’t wanna say self-loathing but he does that thing where he thinks he’s not good enough for her). i wonder if shoma would end up having to console(?) him or provide a fresh perspective if namba got stressy about their relationship lmao. but also if i were shoma’s age and my older sibling were dating someone not that much younger than our dad, i wouldn’t necessarily know how to relate to them. 

tsugaru: D/A

a sketchy man who doesn’t feel the need to hide his eccentricities. the gift he’d bring to her household would be something absolutely disgusting like chocolate takoyaki. he’s either a D or an A bc maybe shoma actually likes that kind of thing? who can say
