How Many Detectives Are Needed To Sleep A Baby? || Jay Halstead x reader!
Cute and fluffy Jay, wife and baby + babysitter detectives
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly delated my blog 🫠
Tumblr media
Summary: Intelligence unit takes care of Jay's newborn baby while he and his wife are in court. Turns out it is the most difficult case they have worked on.
-"You can't go in there". Platt muttered in a scolding tone to Adam, who wanted to go into the coffee room.
-"Why not?" He asked strangely.
-"Shhhhhh". Kim gave him a punch on his arm. -"Keep it quiet, you're gonna wake her up".
-"Ok, alright". Ruzek kept his voice low. -"What the hell is going on, girls?"
-"Halstead's baby is sleeping in there. Don't you dare to interrupt her sweet dreams, bro". Kevin said from his desk.
-"Look at her. You can see her smile even from here". Hailey said, peeking through the window.
Trudy and Kim followed her.
-"She's so lucky she didn't get her father's mad face". The Sergeant enquired.
-"What do you think she's dreaming about? She looks so peaceful".
-"What's going on? Where's Jay? Where's her mom? What is she doing here all alone?" Adam was losing it, increasing his voice volume once more.
-"She's not alone. We're taking care of her!". Hailey frowned.
-"Adam, please". Voigh silently got out of his office and rushed towards him whispering. -"Would you keep it down? I can hear your voice even with my door closed. Let the baby rest, she's only weeks old and already has seen too much".
The detective opened his arms in a defeated gesture. He had just arrived and didn't understand anything.
-"Y/N is testifying right now, we couldn't avoid it. She and her colleagues published the investigation under their names, so...I couldn't stop it. Jay is by her side. The baby is here for protection".
-"She really is a hell of a journalist". Upton mentioned with admiration.
-"And a very brave woman. We owe her a lot in this case". Hank stated.
-"You know? You would have known about this if you had arrived in time to work". Burgess teases Adam.
-"Is there any news about the trial?" Platt wanted to know, worried about you.
-"Not yet, but Jay said he'll be in touch". The boss stated. -"You know these trials take time".
They weren't conscious about it, but the whole Intelligence squad looked hilarious talking with whispers and walking in tiptoes as they went back to their workplaces.
Time passed and the girl was still sleeping safe and sound, until Adam decided to stand up to stretch a bit and stumbled with some cables on the floor. Naturally, the clatter woke up the little baby.
-"It had to be you, right?" Kim mocked her husband as she helped him stand up.
Hailey and Kevin ran to the coffee room as if they were running a race. It was him who got there first and held the baby girl.
-"There, there. Uncle Kev is right here". He tried to reassure her. -"I had siblings and took care of them when they were babies. I can manage another one".
But after a few minutes, she was still uncontrollable.
-"Ok, it's my turn". Burgess got into the game and took the baby off his partner's arms. -"I'm the only mom here, the only one who has a real daughter. I know how to do it".
-"What are you talking about?" Trudy Platt laughed. -"Makayla was already a grown up when you adopted her!" And she grabbed the baby to accommodate her in her chest. But the crying did not stop.
-"Oh, no. What are they doing to you, sweetie?" Upton grabbed her and laid her in her arms. -"I am her godmother, she knows me better".
The baby Halstead slowed down her crying, but she was still restless.
-"Well, how many detectives do you need to sleep a baby, hum? You don't know anything". Hank Voight gasped. -"Give her to me, I'll show you all". But as soon as she was in the arms of the boss, her crying increased. -"Oh. I've lost touch!"
Jay and Y/N were already at the bullpen, waiting in the stairs. They got in time to witness the fluffy scene.
-"Hey, guys? She's not a rag doll, you know?" Jay said laughing at the scene and his friends turned around with surprise. -"She just needs her daddy's arms''. He took his daughter to stroke her and almost immediately she calmed down.
-"That's not fair". Platt crossed her arms.
-"We brought you coffee". You smiled, leaving the box you were carrying on one of the desks. -"There's not enough caffeine when you take care of a newborn. There's one for each of you, just as each of you like it. Look for your name in the tags".
-"Geez, thanks!" Adam said gladly and balanced the table. -"I was denied entrance to the coffee room the whole morning".
-"I'm sorry". You turned red.
-"Don't listen to him". A chorus of detectives said.
-"She's really calm, it was no problem". Kevin asserted and everyone else agreed.
You approached your husband and as soon as you were in your daughter's sight, the baby started to smile and giggle, throwing little kicks into the air.
-"What? Why are you laughing so much, baby?" You raised your hands and freed Jay's arms. -"Come with mommy, sweetie".
Everyone stared at the scene with tenderness, especially Kim, whose eyes started watering.
-"You wanna hold her?"
She just nodded and took the opportunity.
-"How was the trial? Are you alright?" Platt inquiered.
-"Yeah, I mean it was really scary, but I think it went fine". Y/N hands started to shake a little bit, but she was fast enough to hide them in her pockets. Nobody noticed, except for Jay.
-"She did a great job". He hugged you by the waist, trying to secretly ease you.
-"I have no doubt about it, she already showed us how much of a badass she is". Hank smirked.
-"I will just be more comfortable if you stay in here at least until the Jury deliberates, or as soon as I can go home with you. It's just a precaution, I'm not being paranoid or something".
-"Yes, I agree". Voight followed the idea.
-"Sure. Whatever you think is better".
The baby yawned and stretched herself so adorably, that she caught everyone's attention again.
-"I should put her down to sleep".
-"Alright. Take my seat, Y/N. We don't know how much we're staying here". Jay pointed out.
-"C'me on, Kim. Give the baby back to her mommy".
-"If you need help with the baby or you get bored of these people around, I'll be downstairs". The desk Sergeant winked at you and you smiled back at her back.
-"She won't be bored. She has me here". Hailey pulled a face.
-"I'll take provisions just in case the little one takes the coffee room again". Ruzek rushed to the kitchen.
Everyone else rolled their eyes in a funny way.

Pairing: jay halstead x reader
Summary: Jay is y/n husband and he left her for eight months to go to Bolivia. When he came back, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his wife again
Warning: none i guess, maybe a little bit of angst
English is not my first language, sorry if there’s some mistakes!
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
When your husband came home that day asking you to sit down on the couch, you didn’t think that he was going to say what he actually said. You two worked at Intelligence for four years and you didn’t think possible for him to change the way he did. When you first met him you immediately knew that he was kind, gentle and a good cop: you knew that he would have done everything to help innocents and to stop criminals, you knew that he was a good person.
And then something changed.
You didn’t know if that was because of his partner, Hailey Upton, or because of Voight; you just knew that you didn’t recognize him anymore. You even talked about it with Adam, your partner, but you weren’t able to find a way to help him get through that.
You just wanted him to be happy again, you just wanted him to be himself again.
That’s why you let him go.
When he told you that he accepted the job in Bolivia you couldn’t believe it, you just couldn’t.
Was he running away from the unit or was he running away from you?
You didn’t know what was true, but you couldn’t just deny him to be happy again: if he needed to go, you would have let him go.
And that’s exactly what you did.
“It will be for eight months maybe a little longer, okay? I will be back home soon.” He said that day, kissing your forehead with glossy eyes. “I love you… i really do but i need to do this. Please don’t be angry with me, i’ll come back to you, i promise. You’re the love of my life, y/n.”
When he left some minutes later to take his flight, you fell on the ground, crying; you needed him near you, you needed him there with you but you just couldn’t deny him to be himself again.
That’s why you didn’t tell him the truth.
That’s why you hid it from him.
When Kim knocked at your door that night after having heard about Jay, you let her in and you just walked back to the couch, where you cried all day.
“Y/n…” she whispered, walking towards you and hugging you tightly. “It’s okay. It’s temporary, right? He will come back, okay?”
You didn’t say anything, you didn’t nod or shook your head in response, you just kept crying again and again and then, after some minutes, you spoke.
“We perfectly know that he can die there.” You said, finally telling the truth, finally admitting out loud what you had in your mind all day since he talked to you.
“Oh, y/n…” she kept hugging you and she also placed her hand on your shoulder, trying to reassure you in some way. She wanted to say something, she wanted to help you go through all of that but her eyes fell on it.
It was on the table in front of the couch, exactly where you placed it after Jay left.
“What’s that?” She asked, keeping her eyes on the small object; she reached it and she looked at the result when you didn’t complain about it, then she looked up at you, shocked. “You’re pregnant?”
You wanted to cry, you wanted to scream, you wanted be alone in your thoughts, but Kim was there trying to help you and you really appreciated that, that’s why you just nodded, answering her.
“Does Jay know about it? Did He really leave you here alone knowing that you’re pregnant?”
Kim knew the answer deep down, she knew that Jay wouldn’t have left you there knowing that you were pregnant but she needed to know it for sure; when you shook your head saying “no”, she hugged you tighter.
“Oh, darling.” She whispered, caressing your back slowly and gently. “You should’ve told him, Y/n, i’m sure he wouldn’t have left knowing that.”
You sobbed, then you looked up at her and you shook your head again.
“T-That’s why i-i d-din’t tell him. He needed t-to go Kim, i c-couldn’t stop him.”
“But he had the rights to know the truth before taking such a decision!” She replied, shaking her head in disagreement.
“When he came here telling me about the job in Bolivia he already took it, he accepted it without even talking about it with me. I would have told him if he hadn’t already accepted it. He told me that he had a flight in few hours, how could i have told him? I know, after all, that he’s lost. He’s not himself anymore and, if taking that job is going to help him, then i will accept it. He said, after all, that’s only for eight months.” You said, even if he said that there was the possibility that he needed to stay a little longer. “When he will be back home, i will still be pregnant and he will be able to be here when our baby is born.”
Kim didn’t agree with you but you was still shocked, that’s why she didn’t say anything: she just hugged you, promising you that she would have help you.
And she did, as all your unit.
Kim, Adam, Hailey, Kevin, Hank and also Trudy helped how they could.
In the next months they helped you, they came to your house to keep you company and they accompanied you to the hospital every time you needed to do a visit.
You were never alone after all, but you knew, however, that the most important person for you wasn’t there. You couldn’t blame him since you didn’t tell him the truth, but still you missed him so much.
Your baby was healthy but he, or she, wasn’t ready to be born yet, even if one week passed since the due date.
In some ways you were relieved because you really wanted Jay to be there when you would’ve become a mother. Every single time someone knocked at your door or every single time your phone rang, you panicked, afraid that something happened to your husband while he was still in Bolivia. You didn’t talked to him in the last few months, mostly because you didn’t want to distract him during a mission and because you were always afraid of blowing his cover.
That’s why you hardly talked to him or contacted him on the phone, and he did the same thing for the same reasons.
Until you didn’t hear anything about him from the army, you knew that he was okay, you knew that he was still alive. And every day you kept going on, holding on this thought, holding on the fact that no one called you, so he had to be safe, he had to be alive.
You didn’t know when he would’ve returned home, but you just hoped that it was soon; you couldn’t get through labor without him by your side.
That day you was ready to go to the hospital for another visit with your gynecologist. You asked Adam to come with you and he immediately accepted; that’s why, when you heard someone knocking at your door, you thought it was him.
“C-Coming.” You said, trying to get up from the couch where you were waiting for him. Your belly was so big that it was difficult for you to get up easily. “Just give me one minute, i’m trying to get up from the couch.”
At the other side of the door there was not at all Adam, there was Jay with his bag on the shoulder, happy to be home again, happy to be able to see his wife again. But when he heard you saying that she was having difficulties getting up from the couch, he froze, thinking that you might have been hurt at work.
Before he could say anything, the door opened in front of him and he immediately looked at his wife; he was left speechless, standing in front of the door frame, looking at his wife that was definitely pregnant.
“J-Jay?” You whispered, shocked. You didn’t expect him to be there, you thought that he would have informed you before coming home, but he was there, in front of you in all his beauty. Being so far from him for almost nine months was hard for you: you went through hell alone, especially when you almost lost your baby, and having him in front of you was like a dream. You definitely thought that you were still dreaming.
“You’re pregnant.” He said, unable to look away from your belly. He let go the bag that he had on his shoulder, letting it fall to the ground. He couldn’t believe his eyes, he just couldn’t believe it. “Am i the father?”
That was the first thing that popped into his mind when he saw you and he immediately regretted saying that out loud when he saw your face.
“What do you mean? Are you really thinking that i slept with someone else just right after your departure? You’re my fucking husband, of course you’re the father.”
You were so angry.
You didn’t even realize it till that moment.
You were so angry because he left you alone with a baby in your belly, even if he didn’t know it, even if it wasn’t his fault since you decided not to tell him the truth. But you were definitely angry: he stayed away for so long and the first thing that he asked you is if you got pregnant with someone else?
“Why didn’t you tell me? I would have come back!” He said after few moments, still standing in front of the door, still shocked by the news.
“You took the job before asking me what i thought about it, what did i have to do? You didn’t even took one day to talked with me! You came here, saying that you were going to Bolivia and that you had a flight that same day!“
Jay knew that coming back home wouldn’t have been easy, he knew that you would’ve been upset and you had all the rights to be angry with him, but he definitely didn’t expect to come home and find you pregnant.
“Wait, did you know you were pregnant when i left?!”
You froze, then you stepped back and you invited him to enter the apartment, to talk about it privately.
Jay immediately came in, leaving the bag on the ground, completely focused on his wife. You closed the door behind you two and you leaned against the kitchen counter, sighing.
Jay, even if he was mad at you, immediately walked towards you and helped you; then he took a chair and he invited you to sit down, placing an hand on your shoulder and caressing you gently. You appreciated it but you perfectly knew that you two have still to talk about it.
“Yes.” You answered after that, placing an hand on your own belly, caressing it gently and feeling the baby kicking you hard. “I discovered it the same morning you accepted the job. I wanted to tell you when you came home but you talked first and I couldn’t tell you after that.”
Jay couldn’t believe his ears, he couldn’t believe that his wife hid something important like a baby from him for almost nine months. You should have told him, you should have told him the truth because he wouldn’t have left knowing that you were pregnant with his baby.
“You should have told me, Y/n!” He wasn’t able to control himself, he just yelled at you and, after that, he regretted it. You slightly jumped on the chair, with tears running down your cheeks. You knew that, you knew that he had all the rights to be angry with you but you weren’t prepared for this. You just wanted him to be home because you needed him but you never thought about how he would’ve reacted at the news. You had time to prepare yourself to become a mother and then he came home and discovered that he’s going to become a father in what, few days?
“I’m sorry.” He immediately told you, kneeling in front of you and placing his hands on your arms. “I’m sorry i yelled, it’s just that…. I wanted to know, I wanted to be here with you.”
You sobbed and cried, especially when his hands touched you after all that time. You missed him so much.
“I know.” You sobbed, looking at him. “I’m sorry, i wanted to tell you but I know that you wouldn’t left and… you said you needed it, I couldn’t stop you from that. I just wanted you to be happy again, I couldn’t see you so sad here. And… when you came here saying that you accept the job in Bolivia… i just couldn’t take it away from you. You were right saying that i had to let you go, i saw it in your eyes.”
Jay caressed your arms slowly and gently, then he leaned closer and he kissed your forehead.
“I’m sorry i left you alone.” He said, softly. And it was true. All the time, when he was in Bolivia for his new job, he thought about you and he felt guilty because he knew that you were alone, he knew that you would probably have been hurt. That’s why he asked Kim, Adam, Kevin and Hailey to be near you in case you needed them.
“Well, i wasn’t alone, was i?” You smiled softly through your tears; you took his hands and placed them on your belly the moment you felt your baby kicking. “He, or she, was with me all the time.”
Jay felt the kick against his palms and his eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Say hi to your daddy.” You whispered, apparently talking to your baby while looking at Jay in the eyes.
Jay wanted to say something, wanted to kiss your belly and whispered something to it like he was talking to your baby, but before he could say something, you moaned in pain.
“What’s wrong?” He immediately asked, concerned. “Is everything okay, babe?”
You looked down at yourself when you felt your legs wet.
“Oh no.” You whispered.
Jay looked at you, confused. “What’s happening?”
You looked at him and moaned in pain.
“ i think I’m in labor.”
“Fuck.” He said, placing an hand on his mouth after that. “I’m sorry, i swore in front of the baby!”
You giggled and shook your head but you were interrupted by the first contraction; you moaned in pain and you looked up at him.
“Hospital.” You whispered and he nodded.
“Hospital.” He agreed. “Holy shit, I’m going to be a father.”
“Jay.” You said while he took the car keys and the labor bag you prepared some weeks ago; he came back to you and he helped you get to your feet.
“I’m sorry!” He said, referring to his previous words.

“Get to Med… Jay’s been shot.”
As she waits in the waiting room at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, the sound of her sergeant’s words echoes in her ears. Her heart is racing, her knee is bouncing, her hands are trembling, and dried up tear streaks run down her face. She feels like she’s been sitting in the room for an eternity, waiting for any news about her husband’s condition. He was already in surgery by the time she got at the hospital, which was a little more than two hours ago.
“Y/N!” she hears her partner, Kim Burgess, call out as she approaches her. When the brunette reaches her, she embraces her tightly.
After Jay and Y/N revealed their relationship to Voight, the two women became partners. They’ve been like sisters since they went through the academy together, and they got even closer after Y/N and Hailey Upton were transferred to Intelligence after Erin Lindsey left.
“Has there been any news?”
“I haven’t heard anything; Will just went to see if he can get an update,” she says before breaking down again. “I can’t lose him, Kim,” she cries into the shoulder of her best friend. “I can’t do it without him. We just got married. I can’t be without him.”
“Jay’s strong; he’ll get through this,” Kim reassures her as she rubs her back and squeezes her even tighter; it crushes her heart to see her best friend and chosen sister like this.
“Did you get the person who shot him?” she says, pulling away from Kim and angrily wiping away the fresh set of tears that are falling.  The anger in eyes and voice wasn’t intended for her partner, or Adam who had been with Jay at the time of the shooting, or the rest of their team but at the guy who fired the gun at her husband and shot him. She begged Hank to give her five minutes with the person when they apprehended him, but Hank ordered her to stay at the hospital because that’s where she needed to be the most and swore he wouldn’t go easy with the guy.
Kim replies, moving to sit in the chair next to the one she was in, “He’s in custody. Voight’s making his life a living hell, I’m sure of it.”
She sits back down next to her and asks, “How’s Ruz?”
“He’s blaming himself,” Kim replies. “He’ll be here when he’s cleaned himself up, and the others will be here after they’ve finished with the interrogation.”
She nods, letting Kim know she heard her.
Minutes pass as they sit in quiet, Kim holding her hand and reminding her that she is not alone. Will eventually returns and informs her that there haven’t been any updates just yet before he leaves once more to grab them all some coffee.
Just as Will comes back with Adam following behind him, the surgeon walks into the waiting room.
As he approaches, Y/N and Kim get to their feet. As the doctor begins to talk, Will moves to stand next to his sister-in-law. “Surgery went smoothly. We removed the bullet, stopped the bleeding, and repaired the damage the bullet caused. Jay will make a full recovery, but he will need to take it easy for some time.”
Y/N exhales with relief, “I’ll make sure he does. Can we see him?”
“Two at a time,” the doctor says with a nod.
“Adam and I will go update everyone,” Kim says to her and Will before exiting the waiting room with Adam.
The doctor leads Will and Y/N to the room where Jay has been moved. Jay opens his eyes and looks sleepily at his wife and brother as soon as they enter the room.
“Oh, baby,” Y/N breathes as she walks over to his bed and takes his hand in hers, looking at him with tenderness. “Please don’t put me through that again.”
“I can’t make any promises,” he says drowsily with a small smile. He raises her hand and kisses the back of it.
“How are you feeling?” Will asks as he stands beside Y/N.
Jay jokes with a slight smirk on his lips, “Like I was shot.
Y/N scowls at him, not in the mood for jokes right now, and says, "Don’t joke.”
“You love me, and you know it,” he gives her a small smile letting her know he’s teasing her.
“I need to get back to work, but I’ll stop by after my shift,” Will tells his brother, stopping Y/N from that is retaliating. “I’ll make sure to bring you some decent food.”
“Thank you, Will,” she says as he exits the room. Looking back at her husband, she sits on the edge of the hospital bed, clutching his hand on her lap. “I was so scared I would lose you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he assures her. “We still have a lot to do together.”
She leans down and gives him a soft kiss while whispering, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he replies as he kisses her again. “Now, come lie down with me.”
“You’ve just gotten out of surgery. I don’t want to cause you more pain.”
“They’ve got me on the good stuff, honey, and after what I just went through, all I want to do is hold my wife and remind her that us Halstead’s aren’t easy to take down,” he says and pulls her close to him, moving them so she can lay down beside him.
With his arm across her shoulders and her head on his, he presses a kiss to her forehead and whispers, “I promised you forever. I’m keeping that promise.”

Second Time Is the Charm
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader
Word count: 1,211
Warnings: None, just fluff.
Summary: Jay meets the Reader, Hailey's best friend, when she's meeting Molly's for the first time after having moved back to Chicago.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the One Chicago shows, or its characters, also not associated with it in any way, or know anyone involved with it.
A/N: Still not in my best writing but I hope you like it!
(y/n) = (your name) (y/l/n) = (your last name) (y/n/n) = (your nickname)

Tumblr media
"Hey, guys! This is my best friend, (y/n) (y/l/n), who I told you about! She just moved to the city a few weeks ago, so, be nice!" You heard your long-time friend, Hailey, warn her coworkers, who she always swore by to be some of the very best people in Chicago.
"Whatcha sayin', Detective Upton? I'm always nice!" a tall guy, who you recognized as being the one Hailey'd had a fling with some time ago, exclaimed, feigning offense.
They all are very sympathetic to you and you can see how they managed to get Hailey's friendship so easily. But there is one person who stands out from the rest of the group. And you just can't help yourself but to stare at the handsome guy who Hailey said is her partner. The famous Jay Halstead. You do know that it's impolite to basically ogle him like that but you. Just. Can't. Stop. He might just be the most beautiful man you've ever seen and that's saying a lot since you'd already lived in many places and had already met lots of hot guys.
Maybe you were dreaming or something but it seemed like he, too, was taking a few glances at you. But you must've been imagining 'cause he never made a single move your way — not that you were dealing any better with this sort of crush.
The hours ticked by faster than anyone there would've imagined with all the friendly chit-chat and the stories being told but, when you noticed the time, you decided it was time to go home, so you announced: "Hey, guys, thanks a lot for tonight! It was really nice meeting you all, I had a blast! But now I think I'mma head home."
"What? No! I can drive you there later," Adam started but you cut him off:
"No need for that, really. I live nearby and the walk home is gonna be good for me!"
"But going alone this time of night…" Kevin trailed off.
"Well I was thinking about heading home too and I'm also gonna walk. So maybe we can go together?" Jay asked, speaking directly to you for the first time in the whole night.
Not really knowing how to politely decline that one, you accepted: "Oh, um, okay, that'd be nice."
"It's really nice of yours to offer to walk me home, Jay. Thank you again." You said in an attempt to break the ice.
"Yeah, no problem. You know I like making myself available for the community!" He said with a wink? Was Hailey's partner seriously trying to flirt with you? "So, back at Molly's everyone explored a lot why you came back to Chicago but I wanna know what made you leave it in the first place, 'cause you went to college here, with Hailey, right?"
"Uh… yeah, we were roommates, actually. But I left for many reasons, the main one being a wish to see what the world had to offer. Which wasn't very hard since I can easily get a job pretty much anywhere I want…" You answered, leaving out the part about how your ex had humiliated you into leaving the city just to put as much distance between the two of you as possible.
"Hmmm, I see. But you said work had you moving back?"
"Yeah, well this was an exception because I was being offered a better position in case I came here." And because now you'd already gotten over what happened with your ex.
"Then which one is your favorite city so far?" There he got you, you always had a hard time picking favorites…
"Hmmm, maybe Amsterdam?" You thought that it would be a smooth way to do some flirting of your own. "It can be a very romantic city…" You started, "and I've always seen myself as a romantic, hopeless or not…"
"Oh, is that right?" The detective asked.
"Yeah, well, what can I say if everything romance just makes me happy?" You said, looking up brightly at him. Before he could muster up an answer though, you realized where you were, "Oh, that's my building right there!" You exclaimed pointing at the building across the street. But just as you said it you found yourself being sweetly and longingly kissed by Jay, which caught you completely off guard.
"So…" You started without really knowing how to continue after the kiss.
"So…" He imitated while nervously scratching the back of his neck. "I guess it was a bit awkward to just kiss you like that-"
"No! I, uh, I liked it!" Gosh, you sounded like a teenager, " I mean it wasn't bad or anything."
"Then maybe you'd be okay with giving me your number?" He asked.
"Yeah, sure!" Once again, teenager, dammit! "I, uh, what I mean is that I wouldn't mind it if you wanted to call me sometime, detective. You know, just making myself available for the community." You repeated his previous words with a wink.
"Huh! Careful with those empty promises, ma'am," Jay said playfully.
"Who said anything about empty?" You countered.
"Okay, then… Just know that you might be getting a call from me sooner rather than later." He half confessed while shaking his head.
"Looking forward to it!" You shot back and turned around to walk towards your building. Just as you were about to take the first step though, you decided to take a last glance at him, saying: "Have a good night, detective." He didn't answer, you didn't give him time to. But, as you were almost at the building's door, you heard your phone starting to ring and decided to pick up, since it wasn't very common for you to get calls at that time of night. "Hello?"
"Hi, uh, is this (y/n) (y/l/n)'s phone?" You heard Jay's amused voice on the other end of the line and instantly turned back around to see him, still standing on the other side of the street, purposely in your eyesight.
"Really?"
"You said to call at any time-"
"Hmmm…"
"And I just couldn't wait!"
"Are you making fun of me right now?"
"Not at all!" He quickly responded. "I am, actually, inviting you to grab coffee with me one of these days." At that, your heart started beating faster and you could only hope that he wasn't able to hear it through the phone. "Or, you know, lunch, dinner, whatever you prefer!"
"I, uh, I would love to, Jay." Was all you could answer, as the flirty banter suddenly seemed pointless. "I would love to grab coffee or lunch or dinner with you sometime!"
"Okay. That's, uh, that's great! So, maybe this Saturday? 9 o'clock?"
"Yeah, sure! That sounds good! Just let me know where you wanna me-"
"Nope, nuh-uh, that's not happening! Just be ready by then and prepare yourself to be surprised!"
"Jay, I-"
"Not taking no for an answer! Goodnight to you too, (y/n)." He said and hung up, waving at you as he continued his path. Meanwhile, you went upstairs thinking about Saturday and about how you'd snatched a guy like that on your third day back in the city. Maybe Chicago wasn't as bad as you remembered it anymore...

27. That’s how many bricks went up the locker room wall, as you sat there, dissociating. Hailey, your girlfriend, and work partner had been getting on your nerves, and not in the fun way.
She would constantly only focus on work, spending long nights hunched over the laptop in the small apartment you shared together. Not only were you worried about her, but she’d been completely neglecting you as a girlfriend. Countless times you had tried to bring it up but were always met with a dismissive “I know babe, I’ll do better”, but she never did.
The locker room door swinging open brought you back to reality, as you saw the blonde you loved so dearly walk in… an angry look spread across her features. I really didn’t want to get into it with her right now, we had a stakeout in half an hour, but that didn’t stop her, clearly. “Babe? What’s wrong?”
Such a simple question triggered so many pent up emotions. She knew what was wrong. “Hailey are you for real right now? You know what’s wrong! You…” My voice shook a bit as I spoke, my voice raised. “You’ve been neglecting me completely the past few weeks!”
I saw her eyes widen in shock, I wasn’t the type to yell, ever. It seemed my outburst made her angry, she was always stubborn. “It’s not my fault you’re so fucking needy and work harder than you do!” She snapped; her tone sent a shiver down my spine. The moment the words came out of her mouth she knew she’d ventured too far. My face immediately dropped, as I didn’t respond, silently walking past her and out of the locker room, not hearing her faint voiced begging me to come back.
°.♡┈┈∘*┈୨୧┈*∘┈┈♡.°
We arrived at the stakeout location, and everyone felt the tension between Hailey and I. You could cut it with a knife. Jay and Adam glanced at each other, seeing if they were picking up the same vibes, which they were. Our attention quickly turned back to Voight as he explained what exactly we were doing.
I thanked anyone watching from above with Voight paired me with Adam, instead of Hailey. He was like a big brother to me, plus he made stakeouts a lot less boring. He grinned as we walked away together, to our designated spot, aka an old, unmarked car, with no heater, in the Chicago winter. Fun.
“Y/N, you good? Been watching you stare into space for the last 20 minutes.” The chirpy voice pulled me back down to earth. “Yeah, just Hailey… you know how stubborn she is.” I sighed, as Adam chuckled lightly under his breath, nodding his head as we fell into a comfortable silence. Occasional small talk about a movie was all that happened for the next few hours, just wanting to go home and cry.
It was around 7:30pm now, been here since 3:30. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a man wearing all black, quickly radioing and signalling to Adam to slowly get out of the car. We crouched as we walked behind a fence, until I stepped on an empty chip packet. The crinkling sound alerting the man to our presence, as he spotted us and started running.
“Suspect is on foot heading down North of Main, officers following” I spoke into the radio, breathing heavily as Adam ran behind me, I had always been the fastest in the unit. We were running, and as I turned around a corner, I felt a red hot pain in my stomach, as I fell to the ground.
He was hiding behind the corner with a gun. Now, a bullet from that gun was in me. As I collapsed, Adam came around the bend, seeing blood seeping out of my vest, as he cursed to himself, before he dropped down and applied pressure, making me groan in pain. “50-21 Ida, officer down, roll an ambulance to my location immediately!”
Hailey was on the other side of the block, her heart stopping once she heard the call, jumping out of the car and sprinting to me, it felt like she was going to pass out when she finally made it. Tears grew in her eyes as she saw me, lying on the ground with blood around me, Adam holding my wound down. She kneeled next to me, holding my head in her hands as tears fell down her cheeks, Adam still trying to stop the bleeding.
“Hailey I’m- “My voice was weak as I spoke, and raspy from screaming. She saw that. “Shhh baby... don’t speak, okay? You’re going to be fine yeah? I’m sorry about everything, just hold on. Don’t close those beautiful eyes” Her voice was strained and shaky, trying to convince herself more than me, that I’ll be okay. We heard the ambulance sirens, music to everyone’s ears. Everyone was speaking, it felt like I was underwater. All I could feel was Hailey’s hand on mine, as I was lifted into the ambulance before I fell asleep.
°.♡┈┈∘*┈୨୧┈*∘┈┈♡.°
No one had ever seen Hailey like this before. Pacing back and forth in the hospital waiting room, the rest of Intelligence watching her. Many had tried approaching her to try and get her to stop, but nothing worked. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, what if she never saw me again?
Everyone shot up the moment Will walked through the doors. He looked tired, his hair messy and his eye bags dark. This was hard for him; I was very close with both Halstead’s.
“She’s had surgery to stop the internal bleeding, and the bullet has been removed. We lost her twice on the table… but we got her back. She’s in ICU, probably going to wake up soon. But she’s okay.”
The collective sigh of relief from everybody was immense. Especially Hailey. Everyone was here primarily just to know you were alive, so they let Hailey go and see you, while they went home for the night, promising to come back in the morning.
My eyes blinked open, wincing at the harsh hospital lights. I groaned as I looked over, seeing Hailey staring at me. She was a mess, her face was red and dirty, her hair was all tangled, almost looked like she was the one who was meant to be in the hospital bed. Mustering up all my strength as I started to speak. “You need a shower Hails.”
She chuckled, her face lighting up. I was okay. “God Y/N, I thought I’d lost you. I’m so sorry about everything… you were right, I’ve been neglecting you and it’ll never happen again. I’ve taken a month off to be at home with you and help you heal… I was so scared.”
My heart melted as she spoke, even in my dazed, high on painkillers state, I knew how much I loved her. “It’s fine Hails, I promise you that. I love you, and I’m sorry I got shot and scared the shit out of you”.
Hailey let out a breathy laugh, knowing how much I loved scaring her, but not usually like this. She got up and moved the chair closer to me, leaning down and giving me a long kiss, as she held my chin.
“I love you more. Never scare me like that again.”

I still…. Kelly Severide
Summary: After six months apart, you finally break.
Warnings: mentions of fights, arsonists, and drinking.
Authors note: COMPLETELY based off a prompt list from @dumplingsjinson
Walking into Molly’s always felt like coming home. Though there were some new faces, you recognize many of the patrons from Firehouse 51, Med, and the Intelligence Unit. You had volunteered to go undercover on a four month assignment. Previously, you had been partnered with Jay Halstead, who now works with Hailey Upton. Hailey had been your contact since she was brand new, meaning nobody would know she was part of intelligence. She freely came in and out of your UC house, frequently spending time with you to make sure you were safe and staying sane.
Though four months turned into 6 months, when this opportunity came along, you thought it was nothing short of a blessing. You had just had your heart broken and you were looking forward to getting the hell away from him, but his shadow still lurked around every corner of your mind. Then again, it’s practically impossible to forget someone like Kelly Severide.
The memory of that night came flooding back as you and Kelly locked eyes for the first time in six months.
———
You just arrived home from work. It had been a rough day to say the least. Squad 3 had been on a call with intelligence. The arsonist was target the intelligence unit, mainly you and Jay due to the perp being a old CI that felt he got a bad rap. Kelly decided to throw the guy to the ground when he started yelling and spitting at you as Kevin was attempting to haul the guy to the squad car to pat him down before cuffing him.
Kelly jumped the guy, bringing Kev and the perp down with him. Kelly got a few good hits in before most of Squad finally got him off. Of course, you burst into tears as the weight of the day and the realization of what Kelly had just done made itself clear to you. Jay wrapped you in his arms and ushered you away before Kelly could get a word in.
You hadn’t been home for more than 5 minutes when someone pounded on your door. You grabbed your gun from the dresser and crept to the door, quietly looking through the peephole to see who the hell was banging on your door. Of course, it was Kelly.
You breathed a sigh of relief and slowly opened the door. “Hey Kel.” You whispered, tucking your gun in your waist band.
Kelly walked past you, not meeting your eyes. “We need to talk.”
You nodded, though Kelly still wouldn’t look at you. “I agree.” You whispered, moving to sit on the couch. “What you did today. That can’t happen.” You said, getting straight to the point.
“What?” Kelly said, lifting his eyes to meet yours, his face red as he silently seethed.
“I don’t need you taking down a suspect when we had it under control. Kev HAD him. You didn’t need to jump him just for yelling and spitting at me.” You shook your head. “It was embarrassing to say the least.”
Kelly threw his hands up before running one down his face. “I was standing up for you. I stood up for you. Then you went to Halstead and left with him without a second glance my way.” Kelly shouted, starting to pace as he spoke.
“What are you saying Kelly?!” You yelled back, pissed at his clear accusation.
“Do you like Jay or something? Cause it sure as hell seems like you want him more than me.” Kelly snapped, whirling around to face you head on.
You shook your head. “Oh hell no. After everything I put up with at the beginning of this relationship. The rumors of you being with other woman and having to build my trust in YOU. Now YOUR accusing ME of cheating on you with my partner who had to get me out of there because I was having a panic attack?! But NO you were too busy getting out of control and taking down Kev and the suspect.” You shook your head. “Get out Kelly. Just go. This is done. IM done.” You shouted, tears streaming down your face as you stood.
Kelly deflated, realizing he messed up. He knows about your struggles with anxiety and he knows that this case had been weighing on you and stealing your sleep. Hell, you had stayed at the firehouse multiple nights just to feel safe, sleeping in Kelly’s office while he did paperwork or snuggled up with him in between calls.
“Y/n.” Kelly whispered, coming closer to take you in his arms.
“No.” You shook your head, stepping around him and holding the door open for him. “Please. Just go.”
———
Now, six months later, you find yourself relieved to see that Kelly doesn’t have a girl wrapped in his arms. You have been replaying that night over in your head since the day you left. You’ve been hoping to get this opportunity, and it’s finally here.
You strode over to him, greeting everyone else at the table, before pulling him out to the patio. Kelly sat down, waiting as you downed two shots and then grabbed your favorite drink before sitting across from him.
“First, I need to get something off my chest before we really talk. I just need you to listen, okay?” You asked, not continuing until you got a nod. “I tried to forget you and us when I left, but I couldn’t. I-I can’t. I-I tried to get you out of my mind, thinking there was no way you still had me in yours. I still have your number memorized like the back of my hand. I dialed it many times while I was away, but it- it just didn’t feel right to say any of this over the phone. All I could think about was you. I still remember how you taste, t-the curve of you under my palms; every curve, and every line.” you stopped to catch your breath, tracing the lines in the palm of your hand as you spoke.”I still smell traces of you on my pillows. Your smell ingrained in the fabric, but mostly faded as these months went by. I still remember your little quirks,” you giggled,” which I still find so endearing, even though you find them annoying. I still remember our inside jokes and they kept me laughing through all the tough days. I still remember your favorite songs, the ones we used to sing out loud after you got over your embarrassment in being caught; those were on repeat when I needed to dance it out. I still remember your smile. The soft quirk to it. Like the one your wearing right now. I mean, how could I not? It was the brightest thing in my life.” you smiled sadly and took another deep breath to reign in your emotions before continuing. ”I still remember how you sound. Your sweet voice that you hated listening to when I recorded it, but it kept me afloat. I remember how you were there for me through thick and thin. I still remember how you would be there for me no matter what. I remember how our love was unconditional, un-Until it wasn’t.” you wiped a few tears before continuing. ”I remember that last fight, when everything went down hill. I still don’t fully understand it, b-but I’m trying.” you rushed to add.” I still think about you. Day in and day out. I-I still miss you. I still want you. I still n-need you.” You paused, wiping your tears away to see him clearly as you said,” I-I still love you.” You finished, breathing deep and trying to stay in control so that you wouldn’t break down sobbing.
Kelly sat through your whole speech, tears burning the back of his eyes as he watched you. He could see the difference this undercover op made in you. You were still you, but something bad happened to you while you were under. He could see it.
Kelly stood, smiling sadly as he approached you. He sat down, taking you into his arms as you finally broke down. “I still love you too sweetheart.” Kelly whispered, rocking you back and forth once you got yourself situated in his lap. “Shhhhh. I’ve got you now. It’s over. I’m so sorry. I love you.”

Drunken Confessions
Request: Hi there 😊 aw let me send in a request as well 🤭 you're crushing on your colleague Antonio and him as well. But you catch Hailey flirt with him from time to time, so you end your shift at Molly's and decide to get drunk. The other Intelligence members are there as well and Antonio never lets you out of his sight. So when he sees some guy getting too close to you, he steps in and kisses you, making the guy leave. You're too drunk to process what's going on, so Antonio takes you with him into his apartment and takes care of you till you fall asleep in his bed and mumble something like 'I love you'. Then in the morning you can't remember why you're with him and he tells you what happened and that he loves you as well and that you don't need to be jealous as he'd always chose you 🙊
Pairings: Antonio Dawson x Halstead!Intelligence!Reader
Warnings: angst, fluff, being drunk, alcohol
Masterlist
A/N: Thank you to @talesofreading for sending this request in!
Tumblr media
When Jay joined Intelligence, you had joined as well. You had always wanted to be a detective and when you heard there were two openings in Intelligence you jumped at the chance while Jay got the other one. You are the sister of Will Halstead and the twin sister of Jay Halstead. While working in Intelligence you got along with everyone and you didn’t take anything lightly and did your job well, so well that other departments were begging for you but you just couldn’t leave your family and Jay behind so you turned the opportunities down every time. You promised yourself you would never love anyone in the department not wanting it to get in the way of your work but there was one guy that had caught your eye, Antonio Dawson.
When you laid eyes on him it was immediate love but you knew he probably didn't feel the same way. Sure, you two flirted with each other but neither of you were going to make the first move both too stubborn to do anything. What you didn’t know was the first day you walked into Intelligence Antonio fell hard for you and couldn’t even keep his eyes off of you and when you smiled at him, he swore his heart stopped beating and it was only you two in the room and nobody else. 2 years later you both were still crushing on each other and every now and then you two would flirt with each other you even had been partnered together. Around this time, you had gotten a new person into Intelligence, Hailey Upton, after Erin left, you really didn’t like her, especially how she strung your brother along and then broke his heart, and you were normally very welcoming but something about her struck something in you. Of course you were going to be civil towards her during work hours but after those it was a different attitude.
You had gotten to work early so you could get some paperwork done while you were alone and you also tend to do your best work alone. You walked in and greeted Trudy and she greeted you back and buzzed you up. You went to the locker room and put your stuff into your locker and then walked back out and sat at your desk. Not even 10 minutes later you heard footsteps walking up the stairs and turned to look and a smile broke out on your face when you saw that it was Antonio. When his eyes met yours he smiled “Good morning. I see you’re here early.” He said and you nodded.
“I tend to do my best work when I’m alone. You should know this by now.” You said with a little chuckle.
“That I do. So what are your plans for after work?” He asked coming to sit on the edge of your desk and you smiled and put a piece of loose hair behind your ear.
“Well, I had planned to kick back and watch some mindless tv while eating pizza but we’ll see how the day turns out.” You said and he smiled, the smile that you had fallen in love with. He was about to say something else but the rest of the team walked up and you quickly got back to work he walked over to his desk and sat down you didn’t look up only focusing on the reports being filled out. The only time you looked up was when you heard Hailey giggle and you wished you hadn’t. The scene when you looked up you saw him smile and her push his shoulder you felt your heart break and when he looked over to you, you quickly looked down trying not to let tears fall what you didn’t was his smile fall and the look of concern pop up. He wasn’t listening to what Hailey was saying, just trying to be polite. This went on throughout the day and it only made you feel worse.
“Listen up.” Hank comes out saying and you all gathered around. “We have a drug deal going down and we need to go and bust them.” He said and you all nodded as everyone was going to change and gather weapons and you pulled Hank to the side.
“Hey, do you think I can be partnered up with Jay for this one? Just this one time.” You asked with hopefulness and he looked at you.
“Of course. Everything ok?” He asked and you nodded.
“I just want to be with my brother on this one.” You said which was a complete lie.
“I’ll tell them when they come out. Now go and get ready to leave.” He said and you nodded. You went and got ready and when you walked out everyone was gathered around “I want Jay and Y/N together on this one.” He said and they nodded. Antonio looked hurt but didn’t say anything and that made you hurt inside. As you were heading to the house with Jay, he started to look over at you every now and then.
“Everything alright, Sis?” He asked and you shrugged.
“Everything is fine.” You had said and he looked at you.
“You have always been a bad liar. Now what’s up?” He asked and you sighed.
“I like Antonio and have had a crush on him for 2 years.” You said and looked over at him and smirked.
“I know.” He said and you looked at him surprised.
“How?” You asked, voice raising a pitch and he laughed.
“Come on Y/N/N. We’re twins. I know you too well. Will also figured it out. Now why did you request to ride with me instead of your partner?” He asked and you huffed.
“Hailey has been flirting with him and he doesn’t even stop her. It hurts too much.” You said and he nodded.
“He loves you. He would be stupid if he messes this up with you. Will and I have your back.” He said and you smiled.
“I love you guys.” You said as you pulled up to the house. You all stormed the house and got everyone in handcuffs without having anyone get hurt. The bust was a success but you were still feeling bad and to be honest heartbroken about what had been going on with Hailey and Antonio so you had forfeited your original plans and headed to Molly’s.
You arrived at Molly’s before anyone else so you got to drinking. You went up to the bar and got a bartender’s attention, you had downed the first drink easily when the rest of Intelligence strolled into the bar and they greeted you but when you saw Antonio you quickly ordered a new drink. You had been working on the second one while you mingled with everyone and then you saw your big brother, Will, and some of his colleagues. “Yo big bro!” You said and slapped him on the shoulder and he smiled.
“Hey, Y/N/N.” He said and gave you a side hug and then you noticed Connor and greeted him.
“Hey, Y/N. Are you drunk already?” He asked
“Tipsy. Not drunk.” You said and pointed at them and then laughed knowing it was a lie when you finished your second drink and you were really feeling it and it was making you forget about Antonio. You had gotten another drink while talking to them despite knowing you probably shouldn’t. You three continued to talk until you were called by someone and you bid them a goodbye and walked over to where you were called over to.
What you didn’t know was that he was watching your every move. He wasn't drinking much matter in fact wasn’t drinking at all. “Hey, Jay, your sister is drunk and getting cozy with some random guy that doesn’t look like he is up to any good.” Adam said and he looked over to you and he could tell it and sighed.
“I’ll go do something about it.” Jay said and Antonio shook his head and got up.
“No, I got it.” Antonio said and got up. You had been talking to some random guy on the back of the wall that you were leaning up against and was getting all flirty. The guy was getting all touchy and Antonio didn’t like that especially with how much you had to drink and didn’t seem to notice it. As he got to you neither you nor the person that was hitting on you paid attention until Antonio’s lips were on yours in a searing kiss. You didn’t know what was going on and the guy left the drink you had in your hands long forgotten and it had fallen from your grip and shattered onto the ground that seemed to pull you out of your trance.
“What?” You asked breathlessly and then stumbled into his arms.
“You’re drunk. I’m gonna take you home.” He said and you didn’t say anything and he helped you walk out while telling both of your brothers what was going on and then they bid you both a good night. Antonio helped you more like you leaned on him the entire way to his car. Once he got you settled into the car you began messing with the controls of the air conditioning and then the radio, he sighed but wasn’t going to say anything.
You were close to being at his apartment when you started to speak up “You know,” You slurred “I’ve had a massive crush on you for two years.” You said as your head slowly turned to look at him. “When I saw Hailey flirt with you and you did nothing, I figured I had lost my chance with you.” You said as he pulled into a parking spot in front of his apartment.
“I’ve had a crush on you too.” He said and you scoffed.
“Don’t take pity on me.” You said as you began to struggle to get out of the seatbelt and he watched you struggle but was quick to help you and then he got out and helped you out of the car. He helped you into the building and then into his apartment. Not much was said as he helped in and then he saw your face turn green and he quickly helped you to the bathroom where you had begun to vomit and he held your hair back. When you were down he slowly helped you up and into his bed and pulled the covers back and once you laid down and helped you take off your shoes. You hated sleeping in jeans but right now you didn’t care. “I love you.” You mumbled as he was getting stuff to sleep on the couch and he smiled and then walked out.
The next morning, he woke up before you and began making breakfast and coffee. Thankfully it was a Saturday which means that none of you had to go into work. The smell of food is what woke you up and had you sitting up in bed and looking around the unfamiliar apartment and you got up and stumbled out of the bedroom. When you got into the kitchen you saw Antoino there. “What am I doing here?” You asked him and that made him look up.
“You got super drunk at Molly’s and I decided to bring you here to sleep it off.” He said and you nodded and sat down as he sat down a plate of food and coffee. You started to eat and drink “You also told me you had a massive crush on me for two years.” He said and you stopped eating and looked up at him horrified.
“What?” You asked
“You said-” He began again and you stopped him.
“I heard you.” You said as you swallowed.
“But it’s ok because I’ve liked you, no loved, you for two years too.” He said and your eyes widened. “You also mumbled you loved me. You don’t have to be jealous of her or anyone else. You know why?” He asked and you shook your head. “Because I love you and I will always choose you.” He said as he came over and crouched down to where he was eye level with you. You leaned in and kissed him but pulled back when you felt the beginning of hangover vomit start to make its way up and you rushed to the bathroom. Antonio wasn’t too far behind you and once again held your hair back. Once you were done you flushed the toilet and then leaned back into him.
“How about I brush my teeth and then I can kiss you?” You asked and he chuckled and nodded and helped you up. He pulled out an extra toothbrush and gave it to you and once your teeth were brushed and mouth was rinsed out you turned to him and kissed him. The kiss was full of passion. “I’ve been wanting to do that for 2 years.” You said once you both pulled away and he nodded.
“So have I.” He said and smiled.
Yeah, this was going to be a wonderful start to an awesome, filled with a lot of love, and beautiful relationship.

Rewind, Remix, & Replay Jay & Kim 5x18
You can read the rest of the series here
This was an episode where Kim and Jay actually really did interact. It made it more fun. Everyone saw the chemistry of the look between them in the car, right? Or is it just my shippy little heart <3 (I was sad I couldn't find the right gif for the episode)
Kim typed in the license plate Jay was reading off to search for the owner. It was a little strange to be in his truck with him, and not just because they were parked across from a funeral. They rarely worked together as partners. When it was decided that Hailey was going undercover- Kim was floored when Voight paired the two up and sent them out with little more than their last names strung together and a “watch out for Upton”.
It wasn’t that Kim didn’t want to work with Jay. The thought of it happening had just never really crossed her mind. She could count the times they had been paired together on one hand and still have fingers left over. Now adding their after-work actives… it just made her feel a little out of sorts.
They had moved quickly and professionally to her work SUV. Jay’s lifted GM Sierra would draw unwanted attention. Kim pulled her keys out of her bag climbed into the driver seat and started the car. Jay had just sighed and shook his head when he settled into the passenger side. When she had given him a confused look, he had just chuckled, shaking his head. They had been halfway to the cemetery before she realized even though he had far more seniority he had let her drive.
They had fallen into a comfortable productive silence after she had parked. It was just strange. Kim had seen him less than eight hours ago primal and naked taking her roughly from behind as she watched in her floor-length mirror. The small bruise just peeking out of his shirt sleeve is where she had turned and bit him, lost in her pleasure and trying to keep from screaming. Now he was drinking his coffee and she was pretending she didn’t know how it tasted on his lips.
Kim read off Tyler Whitlock's information, “And he is Booth’s nephew.” Jay shifted to look down at the screen. He was worried about Hailey. A little too worried. Kim didn’t understand why- Jay had backed her going back undercover. She didn’t want to press; it didn’t seem like it was any of her business. Jay and Hailey were partners- one of the strongest bonds she knew. They were just-well whatever they were.
“A family business, how quaint.” Jay was distracted by the way Hailey had been acting during the opening of this case. Something wasn’t adding up and the weight of it was sitting like a pit in his stomach. It was the only reason why he hadn’t caught Kim's touch of awkwardness yet.
“So, is there anything that runs in the Halstead family? The military, maybe?” The question catches Jay’s attention and he looks over at her- he feels the twinge of her nervousness. He chuckles, his hand purposefully dropping to her thigh for a gentle but reassuring squeeze. His hand lingered on the denim of her jeans. It works like magic. Kim gives him a soft smile and settles. He can almost see her overthinking slow, her insecurity washing away. He had felt that way with Erin, never knowing if it would be a hot or cold day, and he refused to let Kim feel the same. Especially when he felt guilty for not being able to give her a real answer the prior week on what they were doing.
Jay was a relationship man. Not that he hadn’t had his Casanova days when he was younger. He had gone through his fair share of women. But when Jay decided he liked a girl and wanted to build a relationship he was quick to lock them down. He wasn’t keen on sharing and even less of a fan of hiding how he felt.
He had become jaded in the years he had been in Intelligence. Lindsey had done a number on him. He loved her to his detriment. He was willing to overlook what he wanted, like living together, to try to make it work with her. When she had left without even a goodbye what Jay wanted had been so scrambled that he wasn’t even sure of what he wanted himself anymore. He had started to sleep around again, even going as far as fucking around with one of his CIs who didn’t even know his real name. It was a mess that Jay was still trying to untie with the help of his therapist. “No, just me. The only thing that runs in the Halstead family is trouble, the blue-collared kind.”
“I find that hard to believe.”
“Oh really? Because I’m so warm and friendly?”
“No, because Will doesn’t seem like he has it in him. He is too sweet.” Jay's eyes shined with mirth as he shook his head lips pressing together to suppress his laughter. “What’s so funny about that? Your brother is adorable.”
“Nothing just that my brother has you and most of our colleagues completely snowed.” Kim’s eyebrows furrowed, as Jay focused back on the funeral proceedings. “Oh yeah. You know, sometime you should ask him about the real reason he left New York and that awesome shiner he got as a parting gift.”
“No way,” Jay's blue eyes flicker back to her briefly, a genuine smile coming to his lips as he cocks his head to the side. “Seriously?” Jay's grin is mischievous then his face goes blank as he sees Booth make his way over to Haliey. Kim feels unsettled by their interaction and suddenly understands Jay’s worries. There is something off about the situation, she can feel it in her gut.
Jay is distant all week. Hailey is focused on nothing other than nailing Booth and Jay is on her ass trying to keep her from getting herself killed. Jay catches up with a detective on the old case, doesn’t tell her the specifics and she doesn’t ask. It wasn’t good. Kim was just glad that it was all over. She and Hailey weren’t super close but she considers her a friend and watching her isolate and spiral had frayed her nerves.
When Jay knocks on her door she isn’t surprised. He looks as exhausted as she feels. She gestures him in, heading to the kitchen instead of the living room. “I’m making dinner,” Jay inhales smelling the stir fry cooking. Smelling the food makes him realize how hungry he is. He lingers at the counter leaning back against it silently. Kim glances over him briefly before closing the distance. Her hand slides up between the open ends of his jacket smoothing over the soft cotton of his t-shirt. His hand comes up to catch hers rubbing the back of it with his thumb.
“Why don’t you get comfortable and sit down? You look like you're about ready to fall over.” Kim presses a kiss to his neck. His hand cups her chin lifting it to steal a kiss of his own. It is light and tender, the barest whisper against her lips. Kim lingers in his space. She can smell his musky cologne mixed with the sharpness of the leather of his jacket. Her hand moved down his chest feeling the hard muscles as she stepped away to stir the food. She can hear the swish of him removing his jacket as he heads back down the hallway.
When he returns a few minutes later he is down to his t-shirt and jeans, feet bare against the wood floor. “I need to talk to you.” Kim faulters mid-stir, anxiety shooting through her system, body tensing involuntarily.
“That doesn’t sound good.” His warmth washes over her as he steps behind her. His hands land on her hips giving a gentle squeeze as he urges her to lean back against him.
“It’s nothing like that.” He soothes and she twists to look at him. “Just after this whirlwind of a week. This thing with Haliey and her going completely off the books…” He lets out a deep sigh and Kim turns full to look at him. “I just want you to know I always have your back.”
“Jay I know-”
“No, just listen. Even if I don’t always understand or when I think you're doing something you shouldn’t- I will try to stop you- but if it becomes a situation. If you need me- I will be there. I will always have your back. I never want you to go into an unsafe situation alone because you think nobody will help you get out of it. I will always help you. Always.”
Kim feels tears blur her vision. She would blame it on the emotional week. She pulls Jay into a hug, resting her cheek against his chest, arms locked tightly around him. “I know. You already have been. And I will always be there for you Jay. No question.”

Would the Chicago PD characters have tattoos?
This is all my own thoughts and headcanons, lol and just pure fun.
Alvin Olinsky: He would. He'd definitely get something to honor Lexi after she died. Like her birth flower or name or something. Al probably also had like a back tattoo of some sort that nobody, except Meredith and probably Hank and Trudy know about. Like a snake.
Trudy Platt: She would. But like only one tattoo and it's across her ribs and that similar to Al, nobody knows about it and she never told Randall until their first time having sex together. Trudy smirked while Randall looked at it.
Hank Voight: No. But he thought about it after Camille died and than again after Justin. But he never figured out an idea that he thought would truly honor them. Hank, Trudy and Al almost got a matching tattoo drunk more than once tho.
Antonio Dawson: Yes. He has a lot. Antonio's very much a "every major (and sometimes minor) life event deserves a new tattoo" person. He definitely got Eva and Diego's names and birthdays tattooed like three days after they were born.
Erin Lindsay: YES. Like 18th birthday she got her first tattoo kinda gal. Partially to rebel against Hank and Camille, and partially to finally have control over her own life.
Kevin Atwater: Yes. Several. Mostly on his legs though he has a few on his chest. Kevin has a thigh tattoo as well.
Adam Ruzek: Yep, absolutely. Similar to Erin, he got a few when he was young. Probably drunk and got some dumb tattoos and regrets them sometimes. More recently though he got something for Makayla and Kim. Like their names or flowers or something cheesy. Adam also definitely has a banana tattooed on his arm for Al. 100%.
Kim Burgess: She didn't for a while, but after she adopted Makayla, Kim probably got like the adoption date or Makayla's birthday tattooed. Kim probably also did that one trend, where people have their partners/kids draw them hearts to get that tattooed. She definitely did that with Adam and Makayla.
Hailey Upton: She has like some small flowers on her shoulder or ankle. Hailey and Jay also got matching tattoos of the date they got married. Hailey got hers covered up after the divorce, but she always knows it's there.
Jay Halstead: The matching one with Hailey. Jay never covered it up there and it's a constant reminder of what he lost. He also has a small stupid one he got matching with Mouse one night, that while he'll tell people he regrets getting, he secretly loves.
Mouse: He has the one matching with Jay. Mouse also has a small Mouse tattooed on his arm.

Figuring it out - Hailey Upton x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
Pairing : Hailey Upton x Fem!Reader
Prompt :
Summary : Y/n finds it hard to be vulnerable in front of people but after a hard case. Hailey insists on helping her and figuring it out together.
Warnings : angst, near death experiences, crying, mentions of nightmares,
A/n : This is set after Jay leaves but I modified it a bit (so Jay and Hailey were never married, they were just engaged). Thank you for the request @allivzs and I hope you like it <3 I may have missed some mistakes so I’m really sorry for any mistakes. :)
After Jay left to rejoin the army and broke of the engagement, Hailey was heartbroken. She felt betrayed and alone. But luckily you were there to help her through it, wiping away her tears and always offering to listen to her problems and help her out.
Hailey admired you a lot, you always seemed so strong and never showed your vulnerability. In the years she had known you and been your partner she never saw you talk much about your feelings or emotions.
It almost seemed like you never let your emotions get to you. All until one day it all went loose.
The unit was trying to catch a bunch of criminals who were involved in illegal things and did some terrible things to many people. It was a really hard case for everyone, especially you. You took it the hardest. Feeling trapped and like you had failed those people who were relying on you and the unit was so suffocating.
After the case was over and they caught the criminals. It was supposed to all be over now. But not for you, you kept on having nightmares about the case.
And one day you simply broke. You constantly felt like you weren’t fast enough to catch them on time. You just kept on blaming yourself. Hailey saw it, but she didn’t know how to help since she knew how much you hated being vulnerable in front of people.
That was until Hailey found you sitting on the floor of the locker room sobbing so hard that your whole body was shaking. The blonde slowly approached her and sat down next to you. “Do you want a hug Y/n/n?” Hailey asked softly. You just nodded in response. Pulling you into her arms, she gently started rubbing your back to help you calm down. “Let me help Y/n/n. You don’t have to do this alone. I’m here alright? I’ll always be here.” She softly said gently wiping away the tears that were running down your cheeks.
A few days later you had a really close call, you had nearly died. It was once again another hard case. Hailey saw how upset, sad and scared you looked during everything. She couldn’t stand the look on your face when you were sad or upset.
It made her realise that she liked you more than a friend. And that terrified her, she was scared of losing yet another important person. It would shatter her if she had to lose you too, especially after Jay left. Hailey always knew she had you by her side, she was so used to it and she now realised how much she loved spending time with you. Laughing at your silly jokes or watching movies together or just sitting in silence together.
There was something so comforting about your presence and being around you. You always found a way to make Hailey laugh and smile. She always felt so comfortable around you, like she could tell you about everything.
Some part of her wanted to ask you out on a date but she was way too scared to start another relationship right now. But because of that close call, Hailey had decided to simply say “f*ck it. I can’t keep hiding my feelings like this, I nearly lost Y/n today.”
Following you to the locker room she sat down next to you leaning on the wall.
“Hails can I have a hug please?” You asked quietly, looking down at your hands. You could feel the tears running down your cheeks.
“Of course you can sweetheart. C’mere.” Hailey held out her arms and pulled you closer to her while also making sure she wasn’t holding you too tightly. “Are you comfy?” She asked, looking down at you with a smile. “Very.” You mumbled into her shirt while still crying.
Hailey just nodded and started drawing small shapes on your back. “I really appreciate this Hails.” You said pulling away to look up at her. She smiled at you gently bringing you even closer to her.
“I’m always going to be here for you. No matter what happens alright? You are my favourite person and I really appreciate you and how you’ve always been there for me no matter what.” She said softly, placing a kiss on your cheek.
You were really tired from all the crying and events that happened today.
“I love you so much Hails.” You whispered into her hair. “I love you so so much more than you can ever possibly imagine.” Hailey replied.
“I’m a mess. I’m sorry.” You mumbled quietly.
“It’s okay to cry Y/n. I know being vulnerable is hard but sometimes we do have to let our guards down. And besides we are in this together alright? We will figure this out together. And I’ll always be by your side.” Hailey pulled away to look you into your eyes. You nodded and smiled at her.
“Do you want to get some takeout and just spend some time together at my apartment? It’s okay if you don’t want to of course since I know you’re tired- Hailey didn’t even get to finish her sentence before you gently leaned in put your finger on her lips. Seeing her blush she pulled you in and kissed you softly.
After a moment of shock you returned the kiss. You had been dreaming of this moment for ages. And that’s when Hailey realised she was so in love with you and she couldn’t even stand the thought of you being with someone else. Pulling away you looked at each other with wide eyes and flushed cheeks.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for ages.” Hailey whispered, pulling you in for another kiss.
“Me too. And I’d love to get some takeout and just spend some time together. But only if we can cuddle.” You said laughing a little. “Of course! But only if you agree for me to take you on a proper date.” Hailey joked. “So this whole takeout thing at your apartment isn’t a date Upton?” You asked, trying to keep a serious face so you wouldn’t burst out laughing.
“It can be if you want it too.” She replied looking at your lips. Pulling her in for another kiss you smiled. “C’mon now let’s get you home.” Hailey said, helping you get up from the floor.
After gathering all of your things the two of you walked out of the district hand in hand with big grins on your faces. Hailey wrapped her arm around your waist placing another kiss on your forehead.
She knew you were both going to be alright. I mean after all you would figure it all out together.

so, you’re telling me that hailey, who didn’t take off her ring for the presumably months that jay didn’t answer his phone (not even when she found out he applied for an extension from his supervisor!), who never once talked shit on his name, who leaves him messages telling him she understands, who encapsulated their apartment from the time her husband left, who said “miss you, love you” maybe 24 hours before, just decided to take off her ring on her own accord and we’re supposed to believe that? that’s the storyline they think we’ll buy into? it’s not an honorable memory for jay halstead because jay halstead would never do that. it’s a shitty take on a couple who fought tooth and nail to be together when they were put through the ringer. two characters that stood by each other’s sides, brought each other out from the dark time and time again both as partners, friends, boyfriend and girlfriend, and husband and wife who were summed up to both doing something as an act of self preservation when their only form of actually self preservation in the shithole that is intelligence was ALWAYS EACH OTHER! hailey should have never been put in the position she’s in, but sadly, with the way the writing has been going for her all season… she’s a ghost of who she is at the core. she can’t just endure trauma after trauma and be expected to be okay at the end of it all. especially when the people she has in their life either 1) can’t be bothered to care about her at all (looking at the team who has known her for years tbh because what the fuck?) or 2) continuously abuse her vulnerability as a means to wear her down. the latter of which hank voight does all the time. he’s either scolding her or pretending like he cares, all in the name of achieving a certain outcome. sometimes both at the same time. last night was a perfect example. the hailey that sits and drinks with him and apparently takes relationship advice isn’t OUR hailey. it’s not the hailey who was pissed that this man was dragging her husband down with him like he also tried to do to her. so, who is this version of hailey upton aside from someone who thinks they deserve the pain they keep putting her through? how did “i swear to you that we’re going to get through this because you’re the love of my life” turn into ignoring phone calls and never coming home and “miss you, love you” turn into hailey taking off her ring? it’s a joke. it’s pain for the sake of pain. there’s no light that comes from any of this. it’s not growth or healing or digging yourself out from the dirt. it’s inexcusably bad writing.
tracy deserves better. jesse deserves better. hailey and jay, both as characters and as the couple we all know and love, deserve better. my heart hurts for them. and for us.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea - Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary - Hailey’s US visa was due to expire, which normally wouldn’t be an issue as the CPD would get it renewed but due to a backlog of paperwork, this wasn’t possible. This meant Hailey was faced with the real possibility of having to leave the country, her job and everything she held dear. That was until Jay offered up a solution which would allow her to stay in Chicago, in Intelligence, with him - they could get married. Getting married was a good idea, right?
Chapter - 1/18
Notes - I really hope you enjoy the first chapter, I am so excited to be sharing this one finally, I’ve been working on it for a few months and I absolutely adore it. It’s full of all my favourite tropes and definitely some factual inaccuracies of the US visa process (going off my own limited experiences/friends) but it’s fiction! AO3 Link
It was a slow day in the bullpen, filled only with the sounds of fingers on keyboards and the rustle of papers. The tapping of Adam’s pen against the desk was starting to wear on Hailey’s last nerve. In an attempt to get away from it without snapping at him, she stood up and headed into the break room. Maybe coffee would be the solution.
‘Ruzeks' insistent pen tapping driving you crazy again?’ Unbeknownst to her, her partner had followed her into the break room and was leaning against the fridge. Being an ex-sniper, he had a way of walking without making any sound, it creeped Hailey out to no end and she had told him as much.
‘It wouldn’t be so bad if he could actually keep a steady beat to it’, she huffed, leaning her elbows on the counter and resting her head in her hands. ‘Thought coffee might help to clear my head but I can still hear it even from here’.
‘One second’, Jay said, excusing himself and leaving Hailey alone with the sound of the coffee machine bubbling away, the hot elixir dripping into her mug, the nonsensical tapping still echoing in her brain.
Hailey let her mind drift away from the bullpen and its noises but instead of zoning out to a place of peace, her mind was instead filled with worry; deadlines and dates swimming around her brain. It wasn’t unusual that she hadn’t heard anything by now, no reason to worry about anything.
‘I’ve sent him out to go get us actual coffee’, the smooth sound of Jay’s voice broke through her reverie. ‘You alright?’ he asked, her lack of a comment about him creeping up on her clearly concerning him. ‘You were somewhere else for a second.’
Hailey stood herself up straight, running a hand over her face and then over her hair, tugging her ponytail tighter. ‘All good, just a daydream’, she smiled, an empty smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes so she turned away from Jay quickly, focusing instead on the notice board instead. They had been partners for 3 years now, long enough for him to be able to tell when she was lying to him. He had the uncanny ability to be able to read her like a book.
‘Anything good?’ he asked with a smirk as he came to lean against the counter next to her.
‘Now that would be telling,’ she responded, her voice laced with sass.
‘Touché.’
‘There you are Upton’, Sergeant Trudy Platt said as she walked into the break room. The usually stern desk sergeant had a soft spot for Hailey, something that the rest of the unit never let her forget. Trudy had been the first person Hailey had spoken to when she entered the district 3 years ago, fresh faced and eager. It didn’t hurt that she had turned up armed with warm loukoumades, fresh from the Greek restaurant near her new apartment. Turns out it didn’t take much to get Trudy Platt on side.
‘Hey Sarge, what can I do for you?’ Hailey smiled at the older officer, unlike the one she had given her partner earlier, this one was warm and genuine.
‘This was sent down from the Ivory Tower, marked urgent so thought I’d best deliver it straight into your dainty little hands,’ she smirked as she handed over the envelope. Jay stifled a chuckle next to her which was met with a dainty elbow into his ribs.
‘Thanks Sarge, Ruzek’s just gone out for coffee, I’m sure if you stay long enough you could convince him to hand his over to you. That’s if you don’t mind the milky-est of coffees with far too much cinnamon.’
‘Trust that kid to have the worst taste in coffee’, Trudy made a look of disgust. ‘Chuckles, your order any better?’ She shot Jay a questioning look.
‘You’re more than welcome to have my iced mocha,’ he said with a smirk.
‘There’s not a snowball's chance in hell that you ordered an iced mocha,’ Trudy crossed her arms and pondered for a second, a calculating look appearing on her face. ‘You’ve got a coffee with a splash of oat milk, one sweetener and an extra shot but only on Friday’s right?’
Jay’s mouth hung open as Hailey laughed. Trudy had got it in one. ‘Hh.. how?’ Jay stuttered, the look of shock etched across his face.
‘There’s a reason I’ve got these stripes and you haven’t, Chuckles, don’t you forget it,’ she smirked. ‘Anyway that’s better than Goldilocks’s order of a vanilla latte. I mean do you want to be more of a millennial Upton’.
It was Jay’s turn to laugh as Hailey muttered under her breath that it was delicious.
Just then Kim burst into the room, her jacket half on, ‘Adam caught a case. He needs us down on Wabush, now.’
‘Sorry to cut this short Sarge, but duty calls,’ Jay said with a grin as he ran over to his desk, grabbing his jacket and plucking Hailey’s from the back of her chair with ease.
‘Can you put this in my drawer?’ Hailey said, holding out the envelope that Trudy had brought upstairs as Jay handed her jacket over.
‘No problem, stay safe,’ she responded, accepting the envelope back and watching as Jay and Hailey followed the rest of the unit down the back staircase to the rollup.
——————————————————————————
It was early evening by the time the team returned back to the district, tired and sweaty from a long foot chase that had ended the case.
‘Next time you catch a case Ruze, make sure the guy can’t run like some Olympic sprinter,’ Kevin said dramatically as he flung himself down in his chair, pulling at his damp orange shirt that was sticking to his skin.
‘Ha ha, if Halstead hadn’t sent me out for coffee then none of us would have had to endure such a lengthy workout,’ Adam said grumpily, wiping the dirt off his jeans. He had fallen flat on his face trying to take a left corner too fast and his jeans had paid the price.
‘But now the streets of Chicago are safer because of it, Ruzek,’ Jay said, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. ‘So really you should be thanking me for sending you on the errand.’
‘Yes, thank you for ruining my favourite pants.’
‘I didn’t tell you to deck it Ruze, not my fault you can’t stay upright when you run,’ Jay laughed and the rest of the unit joined in, Adam excluded who sat with his arms crossed in a grump.
‘Anyway, let’s get cleaned up and head out. Paperwork can wait for a day, Molly’s?’ Jay suggested, everyone else nodding in agreement. ‘Hails, you in?’ he asked Hailey.
‘Yeah, I’ll meet you all there, just going to shower at home,’ she said, gesturing to her hair which was sticking to her head with a sheen of sweet, speckled with dirt.
‘Too good for the district showers,’ Jay smirked, ‘the more I know about you Upton,’ he winked as he followed the others into the locker room.
Hailey opened the top drawer of her desk, the letter from earlier sat on top of the pile of pens and post-its that littered it. She sighed as she picked it up, folding and shoving it into her back pocket. She'd read it once she got home, she already knew what it was going to say.
——————————————————————————
Hailey sat on her couch, hair still damp from the shower, the open letter clutched tightly in her hands.
She had thought she would know what it would say, know exactly what would be written on the official letter headed paper. But she had been wrong.
She was now blankly staring at it, the future she thought she was going to have disappearing before her eyes.
The letter from the ivory tower which she had believed would tell her that her visa was being renewed and she would need to head to the Canadian Embassy in Chicago for a quick meeting and to provide the evidence that she had continued employment at the Chicago Police Department, hadn’t said that at all.
It had said that at this time the department was unable to support her visa renewal request. The department was over 12 months behind on applications and as such her visa would expire before the renewal request was even seen to. It stated that once her visa expired, she would need to return to Canada and that the new application would need to be started from there and could take a further 12 months. That was if it was approved.
There was no way that Voight would be able to hold her spot open in Intelligence for 12 months, it wouldn’t be possible. So she could end up stuck in Canada, a place she had tried so desperately hard to get away from, with no hope of returning to the city that she loved, the district she loved and the job she loved for at least 12 months. And then there was no promise that her job would be waiting for her when she would finally make it back.
When she had submitted her request with 6 months remaining on her visa, she had thought it would take at most 8 weeks for the department to review her application and make their ruling. She knew that as long as the renewal process was in process and the initial application had been received by the embassy then she would be able to remain in the US and continue working until such a time as a decision was made.
But if they weren’t able to review the application for over a year, then she had just 4 months left on her visa. 4 months until she had to leave Chicago. 4 months until she had to leave the home she had made here, the friends she had made here, the job that had made her.
The letter fell to the floor as Hailey walked over to the kitchen and poured a glass of whiskey. This night called for it.
Whilst Hailey was at home, Jay was sitting in Molly’s with the rest of the unit, his head constantly jerking towards the door whenever he heard it open.
‘You’re going to get a crick in your neck if you keep doing that all night man, she’ll be here,’ Adam said loudly, currently finishing his third beer of the evening.
‘It can take us girls a while to get ready,’ chimed Kim with a grin. But Jay knew Hailey, she showered quicker than he did and was never one to make people wait unless she had a good reason to.
‘I’ll be right back,’ he said, heading out to the patio to find a quiet spot in which he could give Hailey a call without any of their friends eavesdropping.
She picked up after the third ring, only a fraction slower than she normally would. ‘Hey Jay.’
‘Hey, we’re all waiting for you, something hold you up?’ he asked, concerned. There was something off in her voice but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
The line went quiet for a moment. ‘Umm, no, I just didn’t feel like it,’ she said, her voice sounding slightly timid, missing that bubbly nature it usually had.
‘You alright?’ he asked again, the worry in him starting to increase. She had been fine when they had left her at the district, sure she had been a bit more irritable earlier when they were working on paperwork but he had just assumed she was bored. She was never one who particularly enjoyed being stuck in the bullpen surrounded by paperwork. Hailey was the kind of cop who flourished on the street and in the interrogation room, not putting pen to paper writing it all up.
‘I’m fine Jay, just wanted a quiet night in.’
‘I’m coming over,’ he said firmly, coming to the decision that there was something wrong with his partner.
‘Honestly Jay I’m okay,’ she said but the finality in her voice wasn’t there, he took that as a sign.
‘I’m your partner Hailey, I’m coming over.’
‘Okay,’ she said quietly.
That was as close as he was going to get with Hailey admitting that she needed him. So he ducked out of the patio via the back entrance, his friends were already a few sheets to the wind so he doubted he would be missed. And if he was honest, they would only need one guess to figure out where he was going anyway.
——————————————————————————
It took him only 10 minutes to get from Molly’s to Hailey’s apartment block. He’d been nursing the same beer the whole time they had been sitting there so he was fine to drive. She buzzed him in without saying a word when he let her know he had arrived. Unsure of what to expect at her apartment, he approached with caution.
‘Hails, it’s me,’ he said as he knocked twice on the door. It opened slowly after a second, a dishevelled Hailey with red rimmed eyes opened the door.
They had been partners for 3 years so had seen each other in a variety of ways; post shootings, illnesses, an array of undercover attire, but he had never seen her like this. She looked so small, so sad, swamped in an old CPD t-shirt, leggings with paint stains adorning the fabric and her hair thrown up into a messy bun.
‘Hey,’ she said quietly, moving out of his way to let him into the apartment.
‘I was worried,’ he said as he looked around. There was a half empty bottle of whiskey sitting on her coffee table, an empty glass sat next to it and a piece of paper lying on the table. Everything else in the apartment was as he expected.
‘I’m okay, I just felt like drinking alone tonight,’ she said as she walked back to the coach, pouring some more of the amber liquid into the glass and taking a long swing.
‘Well, you’re drinking with me now,’ Jay said as he went over to grab himself a glass from the kitchen. The two had often shared a drink after a difficult case so he knew exactly where to find the whiskey glasses.
‘Can’t promise to be the best company,’ Hailey muttered, tucking her legs up under herself as he took a seat next to her.
‘That’s alright, you going to tell me what’s going on?’ Jay asked softly, glancing over at Hailey. For someone who was normally so confident and who radiates positive energy, the Hailey that was sitting next to him now was starkly different. He could tell that she was tipsy, the amount of liquor left in the bottle told him as much. But instead of being happy, outlandish and on occasion a bit flirty when she had had a few drinks, she was withdrawn, avoiding eye contact and attempting to make herself as small as possible on the couch.
‘You don’t need to worry about my problems,’ she said. There was no venom in her voice, more a lack of belief that anyone would want to listen to her. Jay knew enough about Hailey’s past to know that sometimes it had been the truth, that she had spent more time isolated and alone than someone should do. But that was no longer the case, she had people here that cared about her. He cared about her.
‘I know I don’t need to, but I’m your partner Hails, I want to,’ Jay said, still unsure what was going on behind those ocean blue eyes. He was usually quite good at getting a read on Hailey, even if she did keep things close to the chest. ‘If you tell me, I might be able to help you.’
‘I don’t think your charm is going to work on the US immigration office,’ Hailey scoffed lightly and downed the remains of her drink, slamming the glass down a little too loudly on the table as she picked up the letter and all but threw it into Jay’s lap.
Ignoring her comment, Jay started to read the letter.
Dear Ms Upton,
We regret to inform you that owing to circumstances quite beyond our control, we are unable to process your visa extension application within the given time frame. The current estimated wait time is 12 months. As your current work visa expires within this period, you will need to return to Canada and reapply for your visa from within your home country. You must ensure you exit the United States of America on or before the expiry of your current visa. Failure to comply with this could have a negative impact on any future visa applications you wish to make.
Unfortunately we, the Chicago Police Department, cannot guarantee that the position you currently hold in The Intelligence Unit under the command of Sergeant Hank Voight will still be available upon your return, should your visa extension be granted. We will endeavour to find a role that is equally suitable and of the same level should this occur.
We understand this is not the news you were expecting but please contact our personnel department should you wish to discuss the matter in any further detail.
Yours sincerely,
The Personnel Division, Chicago Police Department.
‘Your visa is expiring?’ he asked slowly, looking up from the letter that suddenly felt like lead in his hands.
Hailey nodded, ‘in 4 months.’
‘And there’s no way for you to stay?’
‘Not unless I can magically pull a green card out from somewhere,’ she said with a harsh laugh.
‘Surely there’s some other way-’ Jay started but Hailey jumped to her feet, her shins bumping into the coffee table and causing the glasses on it to wobble slightly.
‘There’s not Jay, don’t you think I’ve spent the last few hours thinking about this!’ Hailey said loudly as she started to pace up and down the living room, her hand rubbing over her face. ‘CPD should have been able to extend it no problem, I submitted the application 6 months before it was due to expire. Like I was supposed to do. And then 8 weeks later instead of getting confirmation that my visa is in hand and I can stay, I get this. Banishing me back to Canada and pretty much telling me too bad your job won’t be here when you return.’
‘I’m sure Voight-’
‘Even if Voight wanted to keep my spot open, there’s no way the unit could be down a detective for 12 months Jay, that’s a whole year! I’m not being the reason that there isn’t enough cover on a case and you get hurt. Or anyone else,’ she added after a second. ‘I’ll just have to try my luck when I come back. But it’s just not fair,’ she dramatically threw her arms in the air. ‘I worked so hard to get to where I am, to put together a life for myself here in Chicago. A life I was proud of. And I’m going to lose it because of some administration backlog at the Ivory Tower. Are you kidding me?’ She said loudly, falling back onto the couch next to Jay with a soft thud. ‘It’s not fair,’ she muttered, pouring another glass and downing it in one before the bottle had even been set down.
Jay was speechless. He had never seen Hailey so out of control before, she was spiralling and if he was being honest with himself, he was too. She was the best partner he had ever had on the job. She kept him on the straight and narrow, without her he never would have gone to therapy and goodness knows where he would be without that. She made him laugh, made him smile, always gave him crap about something or other but he didn’t care. She was his partner. His best friend. The possibility of her moving away, even if it was just for 12 months was not something he was willing to entertain.
‘I have an idea,’ he said, slowly swirling his untouched whiskey in the glass.
‘Okay?’ Hailey said from where she had through her arm over her eyes, her body completely relaxed into the back of the couch.
‘We get married.’
Hailey froze. ‘I know it’s crazy,’ Jay continued.
‘Crazy?!’ Hailey exclaimed, her arm flying off her face as she sat upright, spinning around to stare at Jay. ‘That’s actually mental Jay, you can’t marry me!’
‘It would just be until the department was able to get to your visa application, but in the meantime, we could get the paperwork started for a spousal visa, you’ll be able to stay in the country whilst we do the application, simultaneously the department would be putting your work visa together. Once that comes through, we’ll be able to get the marriage annulled and go about our business as usual. You’ll get to stay in the country and keep your job’.
Jay was aware that the idea was ridiculous, illegal if he was being truthful but he would do anything to keep Hailey here in Chicago, in Intelligence, with him.
‘I can’t ask you to do that Jay’, Hailey said, almost deflating at the words, pulling her legs back up on the couch and wrapping her arms around them.
‘You’re not asking Hails. I’m offering. I’ll marry you.’ Jay turned so his whole body was facing her, trying to show her that he meant everything he was saying.
‘You’re serious?’ Hailey said quietly, her eyes filling with tears as she raised her gaze to meet his.
‘As I’ve ever been.’
‘You don’t have to,’ she sniffed, wiping a finger underneath her eye to catch any escaping tears.
‘I know I don’t,’ Jay responded with a small smirk.
‘But then why?’ Hailey asked, confusion etched across her face.
‘You’re my partner and my best friend. I don’t want to lose you. Even for a year. So I’ll marry you.’
‘You know this won’t be easy. We’ll have to fool everyone,’ Hailey said after a second, the gears in her head grinding into action. ‘There can’t be any cracks, it’s not exactly the most legal thing to do.’
‘I know Hailey. We can do it.’ He smiled, the soft smile that made his green eyes twinkle slightly more than they usually did.
‘So, we’re getting married?’ She raised her glass up towards him.
‘We’re getting married.’ He touched his glass to hers, to her it was just an agreement but to Jay it was a promise. A promise that he was going to do everything within his power to ensure that she didn’t have to leave Chicago and Intelligence. That she didn’t have to leave him.

The Saregeant's Daughter - Chapter Three Jay
Chicago PD S7 EP3
Tumblr media
"The whole thing is a mess, We're basically looking at three crime scenes. It started back there on Washburn with a carjacking that Atwater and Rojas responded to" I said informing Hank who just arrived at the scene.
"Okay," he said.
"The two offenders crashed into that car. Then one offender took off in that car, the other one Rojas chased down and he was impaled by a rebar" Hailey said, explaining the rest.
"So that's our DOA?" Hank said, looking at Hailey as we walked towards Rojas.
"Yeah," Hailey replied.
"Carjacking victim?"
"Yeah, she's a young woman. She was beaten pretty badly. She's on her way to Med''
"Listen, did the responding backup units pick up anything? Cause you were in the zone and I didn't hear any chatter"
"That's the thing, Sarge. They didn't call for backup"
We stopped walking and Hank turned to face me with a serious face.
"Huh. All right, do me a favor and see if you can tie this thing off" he said.
"Yeah," I said before walking away from him and Hailey.
-
"You all know Officer Rojas? Welcome to intelligence." Hank said, looking at her as she came up the steps into the bullpen.
"Thank you, okay I hope this isn't the part where I have to make a speech," she said chuckling lightly.
"Nothing like that," Hank replied.
"Okay, what do we got?"
"Straight up aggravated carjacking," Kim said, placing a picture of the female victim on the whiteboard.
"The victim's name is Ruby Garcia. She's 24. She's at Chicago Med with head trauma. We lodged a BOLO on her stolen car, nothing yet" Kim said, looking at us.
"We ran prints on our DOA John Doe. He's not in our system. No wallet or ID" Hailey said, handing Kim a picture of the crime scene where he died.
"That means we gotta ID his partner, so talk to your CIs. Let's get a list of everyone previously arrested for carjacking in that area. Kev, reach out to Major Accidents, and start the paper" Hank said looking at Kevin.
"Yes, sir," he said, moving the whiteboard.
"We've been chasing a major cartel supply and we're dropping that for carjacking?" I questioned.
"The offender died while we were chasing him, so we own it. Let's just tie it off cleanly and quickly and move on." He said before turning around to enter his office but was stopped by Rojas' voice.
"Sergeant? What would you like for me to do?" She asked.
"I want you to head to Med and get a victim statement from this Ruby. And ride with Upton. You two will be partnering together. Jay, you'll ride with Kim" he said before walking away inside his Office.
I got off my desk and walked away to look at Hailey, she looked at me before walking into his office and closing the door.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this to happen," Rojas said, apologizing.
"Don't worry about it, you didn't know this was going to happen anyway" I said.
"Welcome to Intelligence, it's going to be nice having another female joining us," Kim said, breaking the awkwardness in the room.
Hailey soon walked out of Hank's office looking at Rojas and she smiled at her before the two left the bullpen.
-
Getting out of the car with Kim, "Ten to one she's not home" she said as we walked up to the house.
"No bet," I said not wanting to lose another bet with her.
"Somebody help! help!"
Kim opened the gate since the house had a fence around it and we pulled out our guns and rushed towards the male voice.
"Body!" Kim said with her gun pointed out.
"Hey! What'd you see?" Kim yelled as I pointed my gun at the male neighbor who was the one who yelled out for help.
Kim ran towards the female's body that was on the ground with her back against the fence.
"Somebody ran that way," he said pointing to the right.
I ran and checked both sides of the ally with my gun out pointed with my finger on the trigger ready to shoot.
"5021 George- roll one ambo to the 7300 block of Hamilton," I said into my radio as I walked back towards Kim.
"copy that"
"5021 George-"
"Cancel the ambo," Kim said looking up at me.
"It's horrible, I just can't believe this. This is Ruby's room, was....oh, my god." the roommate said.
"How long have you lived with Ruby?" I asked, looking around the room before looking back at the roommate.
"Ummm.....we've been roommates for about a year. And nobody came to the door? You didn't see her leave with anyone?" I questioned her.
"Uh, I haven't seen her since yesterday." She had tears in her eyes.
I looked at her suspiciously "Is she involved with anyone? A boyfriend or a guy you saw her with?" Hailey asked her.
"No...No, she didn't have a boyfriend."
"Anyone shady in her life? Someone that could've threatened her?"
"Not that I know of"
Hailey looked at me and I looked at her before turning back to look at the roommate.
"How'd you meet Ruby?" I asked her.
"At Pescado, she worked there. We just kind of hit it off. We talked about how we wanted to live in Lincoln Park, but it was way too expensive, so, um we put all of our money together and we moved in here. We were living life" she said, wiping her nose.
"That's what we would always say...."
-
"We ran Ruby Garcia, she's got two priors. One was coke, one was selling joints to an undercover when she was 16. She spent time with Julie." Kim said, looking at us.
We were back at the station gathered around looking at the whiteboard and filling in each other with the information we all managed to find today.
"What else?" Hank asked with his hands crossed against his chest as he stood next to me while I sat on my desk.
"Um, okay...no biographical family, given up for adoption, grew up in foster care. It looks like she had a hard life" Kim said, looking over the file.
"And a short one," Rojas commented.
"M.E. 's confirmed that Ruby was stabbed with a serrated knife. They also found this on her torso" Hailey said, hanging up on the whiteboard along with other information we had.
"That's a brand. Looks like the letter, 'F'" Kevin said looking at the picture.
"Mmm-hmm, all right, run this through the Detective bureau, see if they've come across anything similar," Hank said.
"Well, I spoke to the crime lab--Hailey. They, uh, pulled the data from Ruby's GPS. Mostly non-descript, normal driving around the city stuff, but there's one outlier- this neighborhood in the Wild 100s. She went there four times in the last month, including right before she got jacked, '' Adam said as he handed a rolled-up map with the areas she visited.
Hailey added the map onto the whiteboard before turning back to face us.
"Well, that's gotta be where the weight is kept. She was picking up dope from a source." I said looking at Adam.
"Right, so dig in, talk to your CIs. Find out who's moving heroin in that area and find out who Ruby was working for, cause right now he's looking good for her murder" Hank said
"Ruby's made four trips to the bar, owned by Jose Soto. The DEA's got an open case. They think Soto's bringing bulk heroin into the country for the Cali Cartel. The bar is legit. Real business happens upstairs" I said as we all stood behind the bar alley all geared up.
"All right, Adam, Kevin, Upton, you're with me. Jay and Kim, breach through the west side of the building but on my order, Let's move" he said, giving us orders.
"Sarge..." Rojas said.
"I want you to stay outside, and keep your eyes on the bar. Try to avoid the windows" he said.
We entered the bar after Hank did, all the customers looked at us confused and the bartender was about to move but Hank stopped him.
"Hey, hey, hey. Nice and easy. Walk this way. Eyes on me, hands in the bar." Hank said, showing his badge that was hidden in his hand that only the bartender could see.
"12 kilos of heroin, Jose. That's superclass X felony, bro. It's game over" Hank said looking at Jose who was sitting in the interrogation room handcuffed to the table.
"Then why are we talking?" He said, looking at Hank.
"We need you to help us clear up the murder of Ruby Garcia who was stabbed to death last night," I said leaning my back against the walls
"What's in it for me?" He turned to face me.
"For you? Nothing. There may be something in it for your kid brother Frank, though." Hank said which caused the suspect to look back at Hank.
"Yeah, we rolled him up, too," Hank said, placing his hands on the table and leveling his body with the suspect.
"Come on, man. My brother ain't got nothing to do with it" he replied.
"Boy was he in the wrong place at the wrong time," Hank said looking right at his eyes.
He stayed quiet not knowing what to say and looked at me then turned back to face Hank.
"I'll tell you what you need to know...you don't squeeze my kid brother," he said.
"Start talking," Hank said, removing his hands from the table.
"I didn't kill her. I didn't even know her, "he said.
"Dude, she was at your bar. She had your heroin in her vehicle. She lost your drugs." I said.
"Wasn't my drugs anymore. The deal was done. I got my end. She was a mule for the buyer" he said, clapping his hands together.
"So who was the buyer?" Hank asked.
"Never met him."
"You never met him?" Hank said, raising his eyebrows at his response.
"We only do business by text"
Hank turned to look at me before turning back to the suspect, "So you're saying you know nothing about the buyer?" Hank asked.
"I know his money's green and he always sends girls to pick up the product" he replied to Hank's question.
"So you hired the bangers to jack the car? You knew it was loaded and who's gonna suspect the guy who sold the drugs to steal the drugs?" I stepped in to make sure to clear everything up.
He shook his head smiling at my response, "They made it too easy. Sending cute girls to pick up drugs? What was I supposed to do? But I didn't kill nobody" he said.
"You got an alibi for 6:00 last night?" Hank asked.
"I was at Frank's soccer game. He lost" he said with a serious face.
"Jin, can you step out here so we can take a better look?" I asked.
"So this is all the surveillance of three days ago people buying pay-as-you-go phones?" I asked.
"Yes, I remember two men bought phones that day...uh, here....is the first one," he said in broken English.
The first guy was just an elderly couple, "who's the second guy?" I asked.
"Uh....this guy," he said, which was another elderly man.
"Eh, not likely," I said.
"Can you rewind? Go back, yeah" Kim said.
The man started to rewind the video footage, "Okay, stop. Her" Kim said pointing to the women.
"We're looking for a man," I said with a confused face.
"Says who?" Kim said, zooming into the woman's face.
"Do you recognize her?"
"I do's Ruby's boss," she said looking at me.
"The burner used to do the drug buys was purchased by Alicia Rivera-42, she's not on DEA's or Narcotic's radar. Based on the amount of heroin we think she bought from Soto, she must be" I said placing her pictures on a whiteboard.
"Before she started a restaurant, Alicia was a social worker- she taught a vocational training class for at-risk youth. Ruby was one of her students" Kim said, pointing at Ruby's picture.
"She got two priors. Own for possession, own for agg-battery. She broke the eye socket of her live-in girlfriend" I said.
"What are we waiting for? Let's bust her." Rojas said.
"All right- based on what?" Hank said, turning to face Rojas.
"Ruby was running drugs for Alicia, who has a history of violence, so when Ruby lost her load, it makes sense she killed her. Street justices" Rojas said, pointing out the connection.
"Well, it's a very good theory, but so far we got no evidence that Alicia murdered Ruby. What we do know is Alicia is in the drug trade. So let's catch her dirty. We'll take her off the street, then build a murder case" Hank said.
"She might not be holding her supply just got ripped," Adam responded.
"Right, there's an opening, which means she's looking for a product. I say we lay someone under with the bait, Sarge. See if she bites" Kevin replied.
"Mm-hmm," Hank said, nodding his head at Kevin's idea.
-
"What the hell happened?" Hank said walking out of his office.
"I mean, we laid the bait, she just wasn't gonna bite," Adam said.
"Vanessa, I was clear— you were supposed to follow Adam's lead. Why'd you go off book?" Hailey said with a calm voice.
"Because it wasn't gonna work," Rojas said.
"How do you know that?" I was confused by her comment.
I know Rojas is a good officer but right now with what has happened so far since she joined, I don't think she will be staying with us.
"I know Alicia's type. She's only got women around. Vulnerable ones- ones who need her. She wasn't gonna talk to this guy" she said pointing at Adam.
"Sarge, me and Burgess sat on Soto the whole time. Alicia never called him" Kevin said.
"Yeah, for whatever reason, she got cold feet. Rojas is right. She wasn't gonna do the deal." Kim said, defending Vanessa's action.
"Hey, tell them your idea," Adam said looking at Rojas.
"Sergeant, I know how to get to her," Vanessa said.
-
"Got a blue Nissan Altima approaching from the south," I said into my radio.
"You got this Vanessa," Kim whispered to herself.
"Got a visual of the diver. It's Karla Moore. It's Ruby's roommate" I said into my radio while looking at the female that is standing by Rojas.
"Sarge, we got something. We sent that brand marking to the Detective Bureau. We got a hit from Homicide" I said handing Kim the file.
"Julissa Cruz, her body was discovered in Armour Park nine months ago. Same branding on her torso as Ruby— letter F" Kim said pointing at the picture.
"So we pulled the homicide file. Alicia is a person of interest, but they couldn't make a case" I said.
"So what's Julissa's connection to Alicia?" Hank asked.
"Julissa took Alicia's vocational training class. Same as Ruby, same as Karla" Kim said.
"Maybe let me take a shot?" Rojas said, making us all turn to face her.
"Got a visual on the button cam," I said into the radio as I looked into the screen.
Vanessa and Hailey jumped out of the van when Alicia pulled the weapon out, I stayed in the van to watch the footage.
"Sarge," I said, walking to him.
"Yeah?"
"Alicia didn't make it"
"Get the knife to the crime lab"
"Yeah, it's on its way. What do you wanna do with Karla? Anybody looks at that video is gonna know Alicia wasn't armed"
"What video?"
I nodded my head at his comment before walking away from the scene.
-
"Will!" I yelled at him as he stood in the kitchen in nothing but his boxers and holding a beer in his hand.
"What?" he questioned drinking the beer.
"Will please, you've been staying with me for almost two months when are you going to move out!"
"Soon," he said patting my shoulder and walking to the living room

Leave Me Alone
**Trigger warning for discussion of past child abuse**
Voight scans the crime scene.
The murder of a witness is a big deal and the DA’s office is begging them to figure out who killed him. And fast.
“Halstead, Upton talk to the widow.” he orders. “Burgess, -”
“Sarge.”
He freezes at the quiet interruption from his lead detective, turning to the man with a raised eyebrow.
“I can’t interview her.” Halstead says, staring past him to the woman standing with a pair of patrol officers.
“You wanna tell me why?”
“I can’t..” Halstead shakes his head, a sheen of sweat covering his forehead. “I can’t.”
He turns and races toward the truck. Voight nods for his partner to check on him and then returns his attention to the scene.
After assigning out tasks, he heads over to talk to the widow himself.
Jay Halstead doesn’t scare easily and he wants to know what this woman had done to his kid.
Jay hears Hailey climb up into the passenger seat of the truck as he sits there, staring at the dashboard and trying to will the past to go back to where it belongs.
He’d never expected to see Katie Springer again.
Now he can’t contain the panicked memories of the past, of some of his earliest trauma, faced when he was still too young to have any defenses built up.
“Jay?” Hailey says quietly. “Are you okay.”
He just shakes his head.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
No.
“Is there anything that I should tell Voight about her? For the case?”
He shrugs.
The last time he’d even heard her name, he’d been eight years old. He hasn’t exactly kept up on her life.
“Jay? Who is she?”
“Leave me alone.” he begs. “Please. Just leave it alone.”
“Okay.” she says. “What do you need?”
“Can we just… get back to work?” he says after a long moment and she nods.
“I’ll check with Voight and see where he wants us.” she says, brushing her hand over his shoulder.
He flinches away from her and she grits her teeth.
Voight needs to keep her away the grieving widow too.
Complicated as it is by the fact that neither detective on the team will even look at their victim’s widow, they solve the case.
They’re able to tie the man’s death to the man that he’d been scheduled to testify against, making the DA’s office very happy.
The only remaining question is what do they do about Katherine Wellman?
Voight calls Hailey into his office to discuss it.
“He won’t talk to me.” she says, twisting her hands. “Anytime I try to ask him what the deal is he just shuts down, begs me to leave him alone. I don’t like it Voight.”
“I don’t either.” he says, shaking his head. “But he isn’t the only one who knows what happened. And now that the case is closed, I can ask her about it.”
Hailey agrees to the plan and an hour later, they’re sitting in the Wellman living room.
“I wondered how long it would take you to ask me.” Katherine says with a wry smile. “I didn’t recognize him at first. It’s been almost thirty years.”
“You want to tell me what happened?” Voight presses.
“I was a bitch.” she says. “I was fourteen years old and so selfish. So stupid.”
Voight doesn’t say anything.
She is ready to talk and doesn’t need any more prompting.
“Jay was practically a baby when his mom got sick. Just five years old. My mom was friends with Eileen and she knew they needed help. Eileen spent so much time in the hospital and in for treatments. And they couldn’t afford for Patrick to take time off work to stay with the boys or to pay for a sitter. They were drowning in hospital bills. So my mom volunteered me.”
“Without talking to you?” Voight questions.
“I was dating an older guy.” Katherine says. “Mom didn’t like him and wanted me to stay away from him. So I got volunteered to babysit a five and eight year old for free. It wasn’t so bad. I picked the boys up and walked them home from school. Then I did my homework while they played in their rooms, fed them dinner and then got them into bed.”
“When you wanted to be somewhere else?” Hailey asks.
“Yeah.” Katherine agrees. “But that wasn’t the worst of it. Jay… his mom had had to take him with her to one of her appointments because she didn’t have any choice. And he… saw something. I never knew what it was other than that he’d slipped away from the nurse who’d offered to watch him and that he hadn’t stopped crying for days afterward.”
“Babysitting a traumatized little boy is a lot for a fourteen year old.” Voight says.
“Don’t.. pity me.” Katherine says, shaking her head. “I should have told an adult that I was overwhelmed. Instead I… I complained to my boyfriend. I whined endlessly about how hard it was to have him waking up crying every single night. How hard it was for me.”
“And he had a solution?”
“Oscar was a jerk.” Katherine says. “But he was older and he was interested in me and I thought he was hot. When he suggested gagging Jay when I tucked him into bed I told him I wasn’t going to do that. But over the next week or so he kept suggesting it and Jay kept waking up crying. And I was losing hours of sleep every night trying to calm him down and get him back to sleep and I was exhausted so one night I… I tied one of the scarves that his mom kept around the house to cover up the hair loss in his mouth and told him he had to leave it there so he wouldn’t wake Will up anymore.”
“And then you kept doing it?” Hailey asks.
She’s trying hard to keep the sympathetic tone in her voice but it’s obvious that, as the details of what this woman had done to her partner are starting to unfold, anger is beginning to take over.
“Not every night, not at first.” Katherine says. “But once I’d done it once it got easier. And when I didn’t for a few days the lack of sleep would make me cranky, angry. It had been about a week that I hadn’t before the first time that he took it off. I woke up to him crying and I was confused because I knew I’d gagged him and I… when I went into his room he was crying. Said that he didn’t feel well and it had gotten hard to breathe. But I was tired and a selfish bitch so I tied the scarf back in his mouth and used a second one to tie his hands so he couldn’t take it out again. And then I went back to sleep.”
Katherine is crying now but Hailey is having a hard time finding any sympathy for her.
She’d tied up a crying, sick five year old and then left him to face his nightmares alone.
“That went on for a couple of months.” Katherine says. “And then one night Oscar showed up after I put the kids to bed. I thought he wanted to spend some time with me but he was more interested in Jay. And he… he started burning him with a cigar. I begged him to stop but he wouldn’t. I grabbed my phone to call… I don’t know, the police or my mom. That’s when Oscar told me that if I told anyone he would tell them what I’d done. That he’d say that it was me who burned him.”
“So you let him keep doing it.” Voight concludes, face steely.
“Yes.” Katherine admits. “For weeks. He would burn him and cut him and Jay would just cry the whole time. Until… one night he didn’t. He just laid there and didn’t make a sound the entire time. I called the police in the morning.”
“Did they know what you did?” Hailey asks.
“I admitted to everything.” she insists. “I got a deal in exchange for testifying against Oscar. It was expunged after I turned eighteen and there were no other charges but I… I know how badly I screwed up. Pat and Eileen trusted me with the most important things in their lives and I treated one of them with completely unforgivable cruelty.”
“Did you ever do anything to Will?” Voight asks.
“No.” she says. “He… he never cried or even woke up in the night. I don’t think he even knows what I did. I saw him at a church thing a few months later and he asked why I wasn’t watching them anymore. I didn’t even get the chance to answer him before Eileen showed up. And the look she gave me. I didn’t know it was possible to feel more guilty than I did then. Until I saw Jay the other day. Until I realized who he was and why he was looking at me that way.”
Hailey just raises an eyebrow as the woman looks at her.
“I’ll never be able to make up for what I did.” Katherine says. “I was stupid, selfish, immature and I will never forgive myself. I don’t expect you too either. That’s not why I’ve told you about what happened. I know how much seeing me again must have hurt him. He needs someone and you need to know what you’re helping him with.”
Hailey has heard enough.
She doesn’t know if she buys the woman’s remorse but she is right about one thing.
Her partner needs her.
Jay’s been a detective too long to not know the second he opens the door that Hailey knows everything.
“Come in.” he says, stepping back.
Hailey heads for his kitchen, wasting no time arranging their usual glasses of whiskey.
“How much do you know?” he asks, picking up his glass.
“Voight and I talked to Katherine.” Hailey tells him. “She told us everything she did to you and everything she let her boyfriend do to you.”
He nods, taking a gulp of the whiskey.
“I’m sorry, Jay.” she says, using holding her own glass to keep from reaching out for him.
“It was a long time ago.” he says.
“You were five.” Hailey says. “And you trusted her.”
“She was pretty cool.” Jay says, looking up at her. “She used to play with me at church functions when I was like two or three. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom talking to someone and she’d come over and play peek-a-boo. I was pretty excited mom told us that she was going to be watching us.”
Hailey’s stomach clenches. That knowledge only makes things worse.
“I thought she was actually trying to help me at first.” he admits. “I didn’t understand how but I… I thought she was my friend.”
“Why not say something when you realized?” she asks gently.
“Mom and dad needed her.” he says. “They couldn’t afford to pay someone to watch us. I’d heard mom say that Katie was a godsend. I knew that Will was losing sleep. And I heard Katie crying a couple times. I knew how tired she was, how hard my nightmares were on her.”
“You blamed yourself.” Hailey fills in.
“I was enough trouble.” Jay says. “For everyone. I didn’t want to be any more.”
“Oh Jay.” Hailey says, setting down her glass and stepping toward him.
“I know it’s not true now.” he says as she reaches out to put a hand on his shoulder. “But back then it felt like I just needed to shut my mouth.”
With a sob, Hailey pulls her partner into a tight hug.
“I’m not going to insult you by pretending you’re never any trouble.” she whispers. “There isn’t a person alive that doesn’t cause trouble from time to time and we both know that. But you are worth every bit of it, you hear me? You are worth everything.”
He hugs her back, letting his face rest against her shoulder.

The day started just like any other would: waking up earlier than necessary, going for a run, doing some yoga, reading, and finally getting ready to go to work. Sure, to a lot of people that might have been a great morning, having all that time to do all that stuff… The only thing was: you’d been running on nothing beyond routine — one that had become quite boring, to be honest — for a couple of years now. Which made you that weird cop who actually enjoyed the worst cases just because it gave you some sort of purpose, some sort of change. Holding that thought, you were supposed to feel lucky once you and your team got deeper into your current case. But, even with the most boring of lives, a person — a decent human being — couldn’t feel lucky for even knowing something like that happens in the world, much less for having to know every sick and twisted detail of a case that involved sex trafficking, pregnant women, all sorts of assault and child abduction.
After it was “over”, around midnight, all of Intelligence seemed to silently agree on staying as long as necessary to finish their reports. Everybody thinking the same way: finishing this today, I can get outta here, get drunk, and put it in a box in the back of my head — where it’ll stay forever. As soon as someone would finish the paperwork, they’d grab their coat, mutter something resembling a goodbye, and rush out of there like the room was on fire. Molly’s wouldn’t be open anymore and none of you really wanted to spend time with each other to risk having to talk out what had happened. And then something strange happened.
Instead of just leaving like your partner Kim and his partner Kevin before her, Ruzek just stood at the door frame, waiting. For Upton. What? He kept looking at her desk so it was pretty obvious but the confirmation came when the detective got up saying: “Hey, Jay, I’mma get going now. You okay if we do our thing some other day?”
By the time Halstead looked up, she was almost reaching Adam which shocked the shit out of you but didn’t seem to faze him much, who only answered: “Yeah. Sure. Night, guys.” And then there were two—the only two Intelligence members who never exchanged more than a couple of polite measures.
Nevertheless, your gossip-starved soul got the best of you, who ended up blurting out a “They’re together?” to no one less than Jay Halstead. For a minute or so the other detective just looked around the room, as if expecting someone to jump out of nowhere and answer your question. But, after your eyes eventually met, he decided on answering.
“Eh… I don’t really know”, he started, while scratching the back of his neck, “I mean, it’s not like I’ve asked, you know?”
“Ah…” Was all you found to say after he stopped for a moment, but he continued.
“That’s just not really how it works between us. But the other day he did show up at her place late at night, which was suspicious. To say the least.” The words just flew right out of his mouth, surprising both of you, who started chuckling awkwardly at the recognition, “this is the first actual conversation we’ve had after all this time working together, isn’t it?”, he asked, ultimately.
“Yeah, I think it is,” you said, now full-on laughing. “God, I can’t believe that the first time I worked up the courage to actually talk to you was to ask for gossip!” You exclaimed, knowing that your cheeks were probably burning up with embarrassment.
“To be honest, I kinda needed to share that with someone. Especially after this moment here.” He confessed, making you laugh and forcing himself to laugh a bit more to try and hide the fact that he couldn’t stop staring at you. It just went wrong when his mouth betrayed him by saying: “You look so damn cute right now!”
"Well, it isn't every day that one finds out that the detective Jay Halstead is a gossip. Which makes me wonder who the cute one really is…"
"Oh, so that's where you're going with this?" He asked with his eyes twinkling. "Because I can prove just how not cute I am…"
"Oh?" You replied simply wondering what kind of proof he could provide against that.
"In fact, I have just the perfect idea, but, for that, you'd have to agree on going out with me first." Jay himself couldn't believe he finally managed to invite you out.
"Ooh, as in a d- date?" Who were you? Stuttering? C'mon!
"A date, yes." He answered, making you feel relieved and nervous again all at the same time.
"Yeah, I, uh, I wouldn't mind that at all. We can try and think of a date that works for both of us…" You suggested.
"Well, on Wednesday I'll be off, how about you?" Jay asked quickly.
"Oh no, that day I have somethings Platt wanted me to do. How about next Monday?"
"That's a no for me, 'cause I'm pulling doubles next week.*
"Damn…"
“Maybe this is a crazy idea but have you finished your report yet?” He asked quizzically.
“Uh, hitting the send button right now. Why?
“Then what if we do it now?”
“The date thingy?” You asked shyly, afraid that had been just a momentaneous thought that came out of his mouth too fast.
At that, he looked at you in awe, mesmerized by how adorable you were. “Yes. The date thingy.”
A million thoughts crossed your mind, including the one that that was a lifetime opportunity and that you should be better dressed, but figuring that saying something like that would only make you miss the opportunity, you settled for asking: “But where would we go? Like, it’s past 1 a.m., Jay, I don’t think there are a lot of places open…”
“Well, I might have a few ideas… Do you trust me?” He asked, holding his hand out to you, who grabbed it at the same time as you grabbed your jacket and purse with your other hand.
“Do you really need to ask that?"
And, like that, some time later you found yourself pulling up to the address Jay had texted you, which was in Canaryville, and it turned out to be an old movie theater that apparently was doing a week of classics with sessions at all times of the day. How Jay knew about that, though, was a mystery to you.
"Hey!" You heard him calling as he crossed the street. "You made a better time getting here than I did!"
"Yeah, well, my car might be faster than your old one," you replied, shrugging innocently.
"Haha, very funny," he deadpanned.
"Hey, this is a cool idea but how did you know it is happening?" You asked, genuinely curious. "I mean, you just don't seem a lot like a movie nerd to me."
"Well, there are still many things you don't know about me. But this one specifically is because I grew up around here and the owner is a friend of my family, so he always lets Will and I know about what's going on with the place."
"Hmmm, that explains it!" You exclaimed with a tad of satisfaction for not being too far off about him.
"But I do enjoy movies, okay?" You made a face of disbelief at him. To which he replied with: "It's true, alright? I'll admit that these days I haven't had much time for it but when I was growing up around here, this place was practically my second home!"
"Oh, so you've brought many others here, I'll assume!" You teased, suddenly feeling more comfortable and consequently more confident.
"Don't! Don't assume that! Growing up I wasn't very successful with the ladies and after that changed I haven't come here often…"
"Ooh, so that means that I'm your first?" You mocked, putting your hand to your heart, "Wow, I'm truly touched now!"
"Yeah, sure, have your fun with me all you want! All I really care about is the fact that I finally managed to get you to go out with me, so I can only hope you'll enjoy yourself." Him saying that, while gazing so intently at you, was making you weak on your knees and got you blushing a bit as well. So you tried to get the attention off you.
"Okay! Then let's pick a movie and watch it already, 'cause tomorrow's probably not gonna be any shorter."
A couple of hours later you and Jay were walking down the street towards a Waffle House while chatting and laughing about the movie like two best friends, which felt really nice but also made you a little confused about the being a date of that date the two of you were on. But, after you both had cleaned your plates at the diner, Jay came onto your bench to clean the corner of your mouth with a napkin, and next thing you knew, you were kissing very passionately in public like a couple of teens, forgetting about the rest of the world altogether, which made you realized, once more, how dull and colorless your life was previous to that moment so you held on to it and you held on to the man behind it.

Olive's plan for dealing with Camilla's fears was to ask Upton to let her take his horse out for her morning rides. Olive has been close to Adeline from when she was young - she has made her flower crowns from when she was six years old and even made a ribbon that was tied around her tail.
Adeline also adored Camilla. She was one of the only people who has never gotten bucked off and she would allow to hug her. The bond between a girl and her first horse is strong.

Their rides are long. Exercise for the horse and a chance to think for the girl. It was also a chance to not be around anyone. No tutors, no parents, no minders. . .
Just herself. After one of her rides, she made it back home. . . only to be surprised by a house full of people. There was a party planned for her birthday!
Tumblr media
She cheerfully said hello to all of the guests. Her future husband was there, along with his brother the king, the queen, several people from the church, and other nobles. Volkivia was also there, although under the guise of a servant.

Elanor was one of the first to give Camilla her gift. It was new dresses, all in beautiful teals and golds, but there was also a note inside. It details how she was arranged to her husband when they were young, still teenagers themselves, and they have a beautiful relationship with four children.
How she could never imagine loving anybody more or having a better partner through the ups and downs in life. It also detailed how terrified she had been. How she had feared that he would be a horrid man behind the scenes. . . But she kept faith in the Watcher, her parents, and the king and everything worked out.

Sister Emma de Ebor gifted her with a copy of the Holy Book. Something to help guide her as she shapes into a proper lady of the court and no longer a child.
Father Walter de Stapleton gave her a holy candle to burn by her bed. To stave off disease - especially since he understood that she had health problems of her own and her mother had complicated pregnancies. The thoughtfulness almost brought a tear to her eye.

Finally, Thomas meekly approached her. She was surprised how nervous he seemed to speak to her. While they were given nobility and her father was respected. . . they weren't of royal blood. Which made their nobility lesser, at least that's what she heard from the other noble children most of her life.
"Happy birthday, my lady." He said, after taking a deep breath. . .
Tumblr media
Inside the box was a health tonic. While that in itself was already appreciated, there was also a note rolled up beside it. When she opened it, her cheeks went red and quickly placed it back inside. It said:
"To my future wife,
I know that we are not strangers, but I also understand we are not yet friends. I am sure you have many doubts about who I am or what expectations I have of you. Let me reassure you, I have none.
We have the privilege of getting to know each other as we wait for your dowry to be ready. Although I wouldn't worry about that too much - my brother and sister-in-law are giving you 20,000 simoleans for your birthday so that should help you with the amount you need.
If it were up to me? I would marry you for free.
Love eternally, Your future husband."

After reading this, she grabbed Thomas by his arm and tugged him to the side. They spent the rest of the night chatting about almost everything. . . and he shamelessly flirted with her the whole night.
She had never considered herself particularly beautiful. . . But she still managed to catch a prince's eye.
