Bedtime stories are a major event in the Riley household, and it’s all because of you.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is what the children begged you to pick for this month’s readings. Unsurprising to you, Simon had Mr. Alfie find and purchase the prettiest 1831 edition of the story he could find. And find it the butler did, earning delighted cheers from the children and a raise in his already gracious salary at your direction.
Now, here you sit with your back against Raven’s bedframe, the girl is tucked into your side while Reaper rests his head on your thigh and plays with a loose thread on your floor-length nightgown. Simon opts to lean with crossed arms at Raven’s doorframe, heart squeezing at the sight of the three of you.
The children listen with full attention and Simon doesn’t have to wonder why–you’re magnetic. Eyes bright as you read the prose with all of the elegance and charm in the world. You do the voices and make faces, pulling a few smiles from Reaper and giggles from Raven. Simon himself can’t help but grin a little, mind floating back to when you’d first started the story.
It was a few Sunday dinners ago, and your audience was slightly larger than it is now after the children had convinced Johnny, Kyle, and Price to stay a little longer that evening.
You read to everyone in the sitting room of your large residence, settled in an Oxford Red Chesterfield chair. Raven and Reaper coaxed Johnny and Kyle to sit on the floor with them while Simon and John opted for the nearest sofa and a few fingers of whisky. Even Mr. Alfie had to stop and tune in for a spell.
“She’s something…” Price whispered to Simon that night just under his breath, and it was more than just the alcohol and full belly talking. Your husband could only huff with a nod, already aware with how effortlessly you allure his closest friends.
Simon can’t help but think the same, watching you here tonight.
The children whine and beg for just a few more pages, Mama when you finish this evening’s reading. Just as they do every night.
“Tomorrow, my loves,” you promise them, and they know not to argue any further. “Now go kick Papa goodnight.”
Reaper is the first off the mattress, Simon barely catching the nine-year-old before he tackles his father at the legs. The boy pairs his hug with a soft kick to Simon’s foot.
“Goodnight, Papa.”
Simon bends, smooching a kiss into Reaper’s forehead.
“Night, my boy,” Simon replies sweetly. “Lemme say goodnight to your sister, then I’ll be over to tuck you, alright?”
Reaper gives a fast nod, hurrying from Raven’s room and a few doors down to the other bedroom of the hall. Simon watches him scamper, turning to Raven who’s flying into his arms faster than he can blink. Letting out a surprised oof as her knee hits his stomach.
“Nighnight, Papa,” she states, voice forcing a smile into your lips. Her little arms circle around his neck and she squeezes with all her might. “I love you more than spiders, mud, and all my toys.”
You and Simon share a chuckle at your daughter’s words. Rocking her, Simon embraces her back with an exploding chest.
“I love you more than spiders, mud, and all your toys.” He releases her after one last squeeze and doesn’t let the child go until her dangling feet touch the ground once more. “Now go kiss Mama.”
Raven turns but stops. Looking back at her father, a mischievous grin brightens her face. Both you and Simon already know what’s coming. You have to cover the laugh that leaves your mouth as Raven’s little foot smacks against her father a bit harder than Reaper’s did.
Simon jerks, rubbing at the spot with a fake wince while Raven runs back towards the bed with a bubbling giggle. Jumping atop the mattress, she crawls into your open arms. Simon lingers on the two of you before retreating to go take care of Reaper.
“Do you love me more than spiders and mud and toys? Hm?”
Raven nods right away at your question, kissing your nose before rolling to snuggle over her comforter. You scoot to the edge of the bed, working diligently to make sure she’s tucked and content.
Leaving her with one final peck on the cheek, you wish Raven sweet nightmares and flick her light.
Simon finds you laying across your shared bed, arms thrown back and eyes closed. He can tell you aren’t sleeping, as you aren’t able to unless he’s alongside you.
His steps are heavy as he trails into the room, breathing deeply and finally stopping the the foot of the bed.
“I’d die for you…” Simon declares in the silence. “Kill for you, too.”
The statement flicks open your eyes, which you settle upon your husband. He studies you with a heat that has your insides fuzzing into something sweet. Slipping to the edge of the bed, you balance on your knees in front of him and sigh blissfully. Hands on your cheeks, Simon tugs you into a deep snog. Tongue swirling, he guides your head with a tender touch, eyes rolling at the taste of you.
A broken groan leaves him when you pull away, his lip trapped inbetween the rows of your teeth. After smirking up at him, Simon drags your mouth back to his and leans you backward. You fall onto the bed in a tangled pair, Simon inhaling the gasp that leaves you when your back hits the mattress.
“You’re everything,” Simon pants out, so overwhelmed by the way you look up at him with swollen lips and darkened eyes that he has to kiss you again.
“You’re the reason I breathe.”
Kiss.
“The reason I want to breathe.”
Kiss.
“And a day alone–without you, love… that would be my death...”

"Six minutes
Six minutes
Six minutes Doug E. Fresh
You're on…"
Doug E. Fresh—"The Show"
Alex Cross bounced around in the front seat of his Ford Explorer in time to the old Hip Hop song blasting on his radio. From the rearview mirror he glimpsed his nine-year-old son Damon and seven-year-old daughter Jannie rolling their eyes at him.
"Y'all don't know nothing about this. Nana Mama used to play this for me when I was little to hype up my day."
Both of his children ignored him as he bobbed his head in time to Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew's "The Show". He told a little white lie to them. It was his mother who used to play it for him when he was four years old, before she passed away from a drug overdose. Alex avoided mentioning his mother because it would remind his children of their own mother, who died in a drive-by shooting a couple of years ago. The pain was still tender, yet he wanted to get them excited about going to a church picnic with Nana Mama and other children from the community center he volunteered for.
Alex had other plans for himself that afternoon. He was going to meet a beautiful woman he'd been spending time with for the past six weeks whenever she was in town. A fellow doctorate in psychology, Sasha worked for a global PR firm and traveled a lot for her job. They'd recently become intimate, and the sex was mind-blowing for him. Nothing interested him more than a sexy, intelligent woman with a body for days. He'd been reluctant to take the next step with Sasha, preferring to keep their sporadic dates platonic and fun. Spending time with her without a commitment allowed him to dip his toe back into the dating scene without pressure. She was flexible, not put off by him being a widow with children, and seemed to always know when to give him space for his home life. After four weeks of seeing each other, he crossed over into intimacy easily with her. Sasha was hard to resist. Forty-two days in, he had an itch for her that needed scratching.
He pulled into the parking lot of the Holy Comforter- St. Cyprian Catholic Church. Nana Mama stood by her Blue Honda Accord with her best friend Mrs. Whitman, waiting for them. He turned down the music and watched his children jump out from the back, grateful to be freed from Dad's old-time music. He stepped out of the car for a minute.
"I'll see you guys later…hey, have fun today," he said.
Damon and Jannie nodded, running over to Nana Mama's car. Alex's grandmother had to do some earlier prep work at the church kitchen and he agreed to drop his children off later, before he met up with Sasha at the National Mall.
"Are you sure you and Sasha don't want to hang with us? We'd like to meet your new girlfriend," Nana Mama said.
She gave him a teasing grin, and Mrs. Whitman chuckled.
"No, I'm not ready to bring people around the kids yet," he said.
He leaned over and kissed Nana Mama's cheek. Jumping back into his car, he waved at Damon and Jannie. Changing the music on the radio to something more adult contemporary, he headed for a grown-up picnic on the National Mall. He'd also been a little proactive in reserving a luxury hotel room. The four times they'd had sex had been in hotel suites that she booked while in town. She lived in Maryland when not traveling, and they both stayed cautious with their personal lives interacting just yet. They were still in the getting-to-know-each-other phase with fucking thrown into the equation now. He made plans to wine and dine her later that evening after a long "nap" at the hotel. Nana Mama knew not to wait up for him because he wanted to spend as much time with Sasha as he could before she jetted off to solve some other public figure's national reputation.
Traffic slowed him up, but he didn't fret. It was a sunny day with blue skies and he was on his way to have some adult fun after a stressful week of work. He had some vacation time stacked up, and he wanted to convince Sasha to run off to Vegas for a weekend. Janet Jackson would start her music residency there and he snagged some tickets because Sasha was a huge fan.
He parked his car in the visitor parking lot on Ohio Drive and strolled toward the spot where they would meet, carrying a fancy bottle of wine in a bag. Sasha texted a picture of herself to his phone, blowing him a kiss, letting him know she provided all the goodies for their day. All he had to do was show up. This was part of Sasha's routine on their dates. She'd plan something special or spontaneous and give him the locations to meet her where she'd make him feel like a king. He reciprocated when he could, but Sasha was part of the jet set, often overseas. Most of their time together had to be centered on her schedule of availability.
Alex wandered past other people who had the same plans to picnic in the sun. He looked around for the familiar gorgeous face with the dark mocha skin as soft as a rose petal and those lush lips he so wanted to kiss right then and there. Sasha was so fine that it made him step up his dating game, which had always been above solid before he was even married.
Checking the location pin she sent him, Alex surveyed the surroundings. She had to be late, or moved to a different spot. Quite a few tourists meandered about taking pictures. Perched on a picnic table, a light brown-skinned Black man in expensive maroon jogging fits stared at his smartphone. He glanced at Alex with green eyes and gave the international Black man head nod of "W'sup." Alex returned the nod and moved past him, keeping an eye out for his date.
Another Black man glanced around the area near Alex, checking his phone, too. He eyed Alex and dropped his gaze back to his phone as it dinged a message for him. The man grinned at his phone and faint dimples popped in his cheeks. He had on comfortable tan cargo pants and a tight, long-sleeved white shirt.
Alex sported a light blue sweater with pale blue drawstring casual pants. D.C. weather was always fickle later in the fall. Warm one minute, chilly the next.
Ten minutes went by and Alex started fidgeting while waiting. He finally pulled out his smartphone from his pants pocket and called her number.
"Sasha, I'm at the spot for our picnic. No worries if you're running late. Just wanted to make sure I'm in the right location," he said.
The green-eyed man on the bench stared at Alex when he said Sasha's name out loud. So did the dimpled dude near him. He heard a distant sound of something popping like a firecracker or a whip snapping suddenly. One woman let out a terrifying scream as her companion, another woman, fell face forward onto the ground. Dead.
A sharp, hot pressure radiated in Alex's left shoulder and several more people screamed as a blood stain bloomed like a rose and ruined his good sweater. The shock of being shot hadn't registered in his brain yet as he noticed the dimpled man near him take a grazing on the hip from the same bullet that exited Alex's body. Another shot tried to take the stranger down again, but the dimpled man jumped behind the picnic table as the green-eyed man dove over the side joining him, just missing getting struck himself by another two bullets that went through the picnic table and bench.
Alex dropped to the ground and yelled at other potential victims to run and hide. From his position on the ground, he pressed a hand against his shoulder, using his sweater to help staunch the flow of blood.
"You okay, man?" the dimpled man asked.
"Yeah, clean shot through me…you?"
"I'll live. Bullet that hit you nicked me."
Green eyes used his phone to call 911. The dimpled man looked in the direction of the gunshots.
"That's a roof shot with a high caliber rifle. A good mile away. I'm guessing the museum over there from this angle," dimples said.
Police sirens blared in the distance, so did fire trucks.
No more shots were fired.
The green-eyed man glanced at Alex's wound.
"Keep putting pressure on it," green eyes said. "I think we should stay here until help arrives. Those shots weren't random. The first shot that hit that woman was meant for me. It looked like she got in the way by accident. You were next…and then you. This was a planned hit. Someone aimed all those bullets at us."
"I'm Alex," Alex said, lifting himself to rest against the picnic bench.
He needed to collect information from these men.
"I'm Terry," green eyes said,
"John," the dimpled man added reluctantly.
"Who would want the three of us taken out? We don't even know each other," Alex mumbled to himself.
"I heard you mention a name when you made a phone call before the shots happened…Sasha," John said.
"Yeah, she was my date today," Alex said.
"What she look like?" Terry interjected.
Alex grunted and pulled out his cell phone with his right hand. He swiped a screen to the last text photo he received.
"That's her," Alex said.
Terry's eyes narrowed, and John's lips curled down into a frown. They each pulled out their phones and showed Alex the same photo and text from Sasha.
"What the hell is this?" Alex said.
Cops and paramedics arrived on the scene. Alex left Nana Mama a message on her phone, and then contacted his best friend and partner on the force, John Sampson, who arrived soon after the paramedics lifted him onto the back of their ambulance. Terry stayed around to answer questions, but John had disappeared.
On the ride to the hospital, Alex wracked his brain trying to figure out who his lover Sasha really was. Had she set them all up for murder in one fell swoop? What had he done to warrant her plotting something like that? Or was someone else behind it? John vanished without a trace, and that seemed suspicious, but would he take a chance of getting wounded like that if he were part of the nefarious plot?
Alex closed his eyes.
The first chance he got, he was going to investigate the two men that were marked for death with him.

a/n ⤜ season one reminiscent? i’ve had a draft of this piece forever so i decided to finish it!
rafe cameron masterlist

The slam of your bedroom door echoes through your house and the fall onto your bed is cushioned by the decorative throw pillows on top of it, drowning out your exasperation for the moment. A deep exhale fell past your lips as reality sunk in. The nags of your parents reached an all time high so far this summer, as they went on and on about how you were going to be stuck in the house with nothing to do.
Unfortunately, your explanation didn’t cut it. In the back of your mind, you were well aware that your friends would be busy doing their own things. You just chose not to believe it until it came true. John B and JJ became camp counselors for some group of kids over the summer, those poor kids. Pope decided to fill his free time with summer classes, and Kiara was tied up at The Wreck. And with John B going away, Sarah didn’t have a reason to stick around either, much to your displeasure. She’d decided to visit her cousins overseas. Not that you really blamed her, or any of your friends for that matter.
But it was slightly embarrassing to have nothing to say when it was your turn to reveal your plans for the next few months. Any other time, you’d always assumed your plans would be with any one of them.
And now, your problems were a whole lot bigger. Judging by your lack of plans, your parents went ahead and made some for you. And with the last person you would’ve wanted to spend your summer days— or any days at all— with, Rafe Cameron.
Both of your fathers had worked together in the past, and they still kept a friendship because of it. If that’s what you call two middle-aged businessmen drowning in drinks and making small talk at the occasional kook event.
To put it simply, Rafe had it out for you. Just the mention of his name made you shudder; your horrific childhood experiences with the boy forever carved in your memory.
His bratty behavior towards you began at about age 9 or 10. For instance, when you wouldn’t budge off of his favorite swing at the park. It would be impossible to forget how he popped one last bubble from his piece of bubblegum, faded pink and chewed thin, before wading it up and planting it right in your hair.
You lunged off the swing towards him immediately, screams of terror piercing the serene island air. He ran in circles, cackling mischievously as you chased him. All for Rafe to ‘take back’ his spot on the swing while he had you distracted.
As years went on, the memory became less and less vivid— except for that moment when he popped in another piece of gum, one bigger than all his teeth combined, before shouting: “Thanks for keeping’ it warm for me.”
And without an inkling of remorse, he began swinging gleefully while you ran to find your mother, hot tears cascading down your cheeks. The tear stains remained for another day or so. The sadness and frustration was simply too much for your nine year old self to handle. Not to mention the wad of gum that had to be cut out of your hair later that day. And it was all Rafe’s fault.
So it couldn’t be chalked up to anything less than betrayal, really. For your parents to coordinate summer golf lessons with your childhood nemesis. It was pure treachery. Especially after your strong argument of course, not failing to mention the dreaded gum incident. Only to be told off by your mother, as she assumed any child of Ward’s would mature into nothing short of an upstanding citizen. If she only knew.
Days later, you were throwing on a Ralph Lauren polo and a tennis skirt to match, hating every minute of it as you knew what was to come. You couldn’t deny how the material hugged your body just right; and a shred of your subconscious hoped that Rafe would notice too.
For no reason other than revenge, of course. How dare he terrorize you as a child and not be consumed with regret years later? His unforgivable acts couldn’t go unpunished.
Grabbing your keys and phone, you sped off in your car without so much as a goodbye to your mom before leaving. No amount of time could help you process what you were in for, and no amount of forethought would make this reunion any more bearable.
-
Scanning the cream colored walls of the Island Club, it didn’t take long to spot the tall Cameron leaning up against one of its pillars, scrolling on his phone with an expression of pure boredom. His foot tapped the floor occasionally, his eyes lifting every minute or so in search of you.
Just two taps on his shoulder was all it took to grab his attention. Rafe’s lips spread into a smirk just as quickly as he turned around to meet your irritated gaze. That stupid smirk, one you knew all too well.
“Long time no see, Y/n. Missed me?”
“Not a chance in hell. I’m here against my will.”
“Yeah, right. I bet you were just begging for a chance to see me again.” Rafe whines dramatically.
“Delusional as ever, huh, Rafe? I guess some things never change.”
“Childish as ever, huh, Y/n? Good to know we agree about something. And to think I had hope that you’d leave the hostility at home.”
“Didn’t you get suspended from the Academy for fighting? Twice?”
His expression shifts from smug to scowl.
“That was a long time ago. You ready to get started or what?”
You smile at him with faux innocence, glad to have landed a punch in this endless match between you two.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
—
The silence remained as thick as molasses, tension lingering that not even the sharpest of machetes could slash through.
Rafe steered the golf cart in silence, movements hasty and abrupt as an expression of his frustration. Your memory wasn’t as short as he’d expected; and now he was subjected to a summer of what he anticipated to be vengeful torture.
Lost in thought, he came to a stop at your destination. And by the looks of it, you were more than ready, willing and able to carry on without him as you began teeing up.
“Aren’t I supposed to be teaching you how? Isn’t that the whole reason why we’re here?”
With a sigh, your eyes darted to the clear blue sky, silently praying to a higher power to keep you sane. “I’ll ask for your help when I need it.”
You resume lining up your footing and the club with the ball, envisioning your swing before Rafe interrupts once again.
“Why bother showing up here if you’re gonna act like a bitch?”
“I was sent here against my will, remember?”
“So you say.”
“And I’m not a bitch. Not to those who don’t deserve it.”
“I couldn’t tell the difference.” Rafe scoffs. “And I never said you are a bitch, I said you’re acting like one.”
A cold chuckle makes its way out of your throat at his blatant contradiction. “You do not wanna go there with me, Cameron.”
After the mumble fell from your lips, you were set on taking a swing at the golf ball. Until Rafe opened his mouth once again, as if he was just waiting for you to swing, to piss you off even further. Provoking you at this point.
“Actually, let’s go there. I’d love to go there. Please enlighten me as to why you feel entitled to be so rude to me. Especially since I am the one doing you this little favor, aren’t I? Giving you a break from those losers on the Cut you love so much.”
“Isn’t it disrespectful to talk when I’m trying to hit a ball?” You query, quoting his very own words during an encounter with the notorious blond pogue. “Learn some etiquette, my friend.”
“Pathetic. So it’s Maybank? He’s been whispering in your ear? What, is he your boyfriend?”
“As if I haven’t experienced enough of your obnoxiousness firsthand. Trust me, I hate you plenty on my own. And he’s not my boyfriend, idiot.”
Rafe raises an eyebrow, his smirk returning at your defensiveness. “Though from what I hear you have some ‘losers’ of your own these days. Barry, isn’t it? Would be a shame if Uncle Ward found out.”
Rafe rolls his eyes at your disingenuous mention of his father. Sure, your fathers were somewhat close friends, but for some reason, it made his blood boil. “What’s it to you? Don’t tell me this is your attempt at blackmail.”
You shrug, grip still firm on the golf club. “Not necessarily. Have to admit it does feel good to get under your skin, though.”
“Touché.”
—
You moved through the golf course rather quickly, nearing its end. Both of your intentions were evident that you were eager to get home, and best of all, away from each other. Rafe slides into the driver's side of the cart, but doesn’t pull off immediately.
“You never actually answered my question, by the way. About why you’re being such a pain in the ass to me.”
You stop scrolling on your phone to look at him, trying to understand his purpose for bringing this up again. “You don’t happen to have some sort of short-term memory loss, right?”
“You said you hate me plenty on your own. But what fucking reason have I ever given you to?”
“Oh?”
“I told you to go there, didn’t I? I’m giving you a chance to let out your grievances. And that’s one more than I should, you know patience isn’t my strongsuit.”
“Can’t a girl just hate Rafe Cameron with no strings attached? I’m sure it’s not the first time.”
He looks over to you, blue eyes staring into yours. “You and I both know there’s always strings attached.”
“What can I say, Cameron? Guess it’s just par for the course. Or are you so desperate to know because you crave my validation?”
“What can I say, Y/l/n? I guess you wouldn’t be able to understand what it means to learn from your mistakes.”
“You’re full of it.”
“No more than you are, peach cake.”
“Just drive us back to the club already.”
“Not until you confess.” He protests, dangling the keys in your face before sliding them into his pocket. Rafe leans back, unintentionally manspreading as he does so, and drapes an arm over your shoulder. “We could be here all day.”
The exasperation was pretty much dripping off of you. His antics felt so familiar in the most intense way possible, and it made you want to scream. He was the same Rafe bullying you out of the playground a decade ago. The same Rafe you were now wondering had you misjudged. Or judged a little too harshly over some measly childhood rivalry.
“Primrose Park.”
“Excuse me?”
“Primrose Park.” You reiterate. “Don’t feign amnesia. I know you know.”
“How could I forget? I was the king of that place for years.”
“King? More like dictator.”
He shrugs. “I had a delicate ego back then.”
“As well as no patience or manners. If I didn’t know any better I would’ve thought you were raised by wolves.”
Rafe chuckles, amused by your memory of him as a child. “Blame it on Uncle Ward.”
“Sarah and Wheezie were always sweet as pie, so I don’t know if that’s fair.”
“Probably just caught me on a bad day, Y/n. I, too, am sweet as pie.” He defends, eyes twinkling as he smiles.
“Like hell you were! Do you recall wading up your gum and sticking it in my hair? Does that ring a bell?”
His eyebrows furrow as he recollects the memory.
“When we were kids at the park, you got all pissed that I wouldn’t give you a turn on the swings, so you spit your gum in my hair.”
He chuckles at first, but his laughs grow much louder as he ponders the memory.
“It’s really not that funny, Rafe. My mother had to cut that chunk of gum out of my hair.” You remind him. “You’re lucky I don’t shave your damn head right now!” You take a swat at his cap, knocking it to the ground as he’s struggling to get his laughter under control.
“And after all these years you never forgave me? It’s been decades, Y/n.”
“You never apologized.”
“Well I’m sorry, now. If that means anything.” He mumbles the last part, apologies being a foreign art to him. “But you should be thanking me, actually. You have no idea what you were in for had you stuck around.”
“What?”
“Henry Haberstroh. He was gonna give you another one of those stupid bouquets of weeds.”
“The dandelion bouquets?” Your mouth hangs open at the revelation, remembering the boy with an incessant crush on you. A crush so intense in fact that he wouldn’t stop giving you bouquets of dandelions he’d picked from the grass— not until you’d agreed to a playdate with him despite being painfully uninterested.
“The gum idea was more of a last resort but I thought you might wanna get out of there. I mean, dandelions? You’re allergic to bees.”
“And how do you know this exactly?”
“As King of Primrose Park I was privy to information. And was subtlety ever Henry’s thing? The kid was a blabbermouth. He never shut up about you.”
“Well I must say I’m impressed, Cameron. That’s quite a scheme you pulled off. Not that you’re forgiven or anything. But Henry was a creep.”
“Couldn’t take a hint to save his life, either. I don’t think I’ve seen you run away from someone so fast, not even from me.” Rafe teases, nudging your arm with his as you giggled.
“The bees!”
Rafe gives you a look of disbelief, knowing damn well it wasn’t the pollinated dandelions you were running from.
“Seriously, I’m really allergic! But you already knew that?”
“What kind of secret admirer doesn’t know his admiree’s allergens?”
His blue eyes lock with yours, smiles replacing the scowls on both of your faces from earlier. You raise an eyebrow at him in question.
“Shame on Henry.” Rafe critiques, realizing the implication of his words.
“Yeah. Shame on Henry. But I wouldn’t call us even quite yet, so sleep with one eye open just in case.”
The two of you share a genuine laugh for the first time all day, before Rafe begins driving towards the next hole.
“Remind me to lock my windows when I get home.”
—
You move towards your ball once again, but gaze at your target uneasily. Maybe you still had a thing or two to learn about the sport. Rafe leans up against the cart, arms crossed and biceps stretching the fabric of his shirt much thinner. The tension was almost gone in comparison to how you started the afternoon. Almost.
Now looking at Rafe, it felt different. How could you be angry anymore? Holding a vendetta against him took too much energy at this point when it was no longer warranted.
To your luck, you could excuse the fiery feeling rising to your cheeks as a result of the sweltering sun. No matter how hard you tried, your former memory of him melted away. You could no longer see Rafe as the pesky little boy he once was. Perhaps a symptom of heat stroke, you thought. Hopefully it would be temporary, you still had the whole summer with Rafe ahead of you.
“I almost forgot you’re supposed to be teaching me how to play this joke of a sport.” You gripe. “Will you show me?”
Rafe bites his bottom lip to avoid cracking a smile. That you had finally cracked, giving in to ask him for help. “That’s what I’m here for.”
Leaning off the cart, Rafe saunters over to you. “I need you to start on your form first. May I?” He offered, gesturing to set his arms over yours for some adjustment.
With a slow nod, you decide to taunt him further. He’s not gonna get away that easy. “You’re not chewing any gum are you?”
“No, Y/n.” He responds, and you can just hear the smirk in his tone. Hearing your name roll off his tongue makes your stomach flutter— now feeling his body against yours, the heat increasing tenfold.
“Hold the club firmly, and swing through the ball, not at the ball.” He guides your arms with his, mimicking how to prepare for a swing. As his head peers over your shoulder, you swear you hear his breath hitch at the faint aroma of your perfume. Rafe almost seems relaxed, doing the movements with you a few times over again before stepping back to let you try it.
You do just as he taught you, and Rafe repeats the instructions under his breath as he watches you take your swing.
From the woosh of the ball leaving the grass, your eyes follow as it lands in a close proximity to the cup. With a scream of victory, your hands collide with Rafe’s in a high five, before wrapping your arms around his neck, his hand instinctively falling to rest at your waist as he pulls you into a hug. “Atta girl!” He marvels.
“I did it!” You cheer, smile beaming off your face. Once the initial shock wears off, you realize whose arms you’re engulfed in, stepping back from the embrace abruptly. “Uhm- I’m sorry. I didn’t…” You begin, trying to explain yourself and your sudden outburst of physical affection.
“Don’t apologize.” Rafe assures, reaching his hand out for yours. You accept it with a shy smile. “You did great for your first big swing. Can’t say I’m surprised, though, you do have one hell of a teacher.”
“He’s not bad.” You confess. “Actually, better than I thought.”
Rafe quirks an eyebrow, his cerulean orbs gazing into your eyes, finding for once they held not one drop of bad blood while looking back at him. He steps forward, the space keeping you both apart dwindling. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. Don’t tell him I said that, it’ll go straight to his head.”
His eyes flicker from yours then to your glossed lips, which is the final straw before giving into your growing urge to kiss him. Rafe’s free hand clings to your cheek immediately as he deepens the kiss; as if a magnetic pull between you two had clicked.
Pulling away, the surprise on Rafe’s face is evident, but the confidence in his voice made it impossible to tell a difference. “I’m glad to see you came to your senses and forgave me.”
“Jumping to conclusions already? What makes you think you’re forgiven?”
Rafe shrugs, and that familiar look of pride returns to his expression. His thumb grazes across the apple of your cheek, and his hand gives a gentle squeeze to your waist. “Call it a wild hunch.”

Evie: The Nativity Disaster
Summary: Tommy Shelby is excited his little baby girl is the star of the play. Unfortunately for everyone, it doesn't go too well...
This was the first ever Evie thing I wrote and posted. Until now, it was only available on Ao3 and Wattpad. To start off the Christmas spirit, I am posting it on here! Please enjoy. :) Thank you strangergraphics, again for the divider.
Evie was an oddity. Everyone knew it, but just sort of accepted it. If attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder was a thing in the early 1900's, doctors would have slapped that label right on her forehead. But unfortunately, she was just a “rowdy kid”. Despite that, she’d been the only light in Tommy’s heart since the war. Despite just nine being abandoned by her mother, it was her who always happened to take care of him. In the oddest of ways, honestly. “Evie,” Tommy said, climbing down the stairs for breakfast. “Can you tell me why my window is open in my office? And bird feed is just…glued with honey on my desk?” He thumbed back up the stairs. If it was anyone else, he’d be a bit miffed. But with Evie, he needed to keep an even, calm tone.
With a mouth full of porridge, “you said you liked the birds, daddy.”
“Yes, Evie, but not in the fuc-not in the house,” he sighed. Polly poked her head out of the kitchen, eyes bewildered. Tommy caught a glance, sighing, “I got it out, Pol.” He cupped the girl’s chin, tsking as he wiped the porridge from her mouth. “You need to think a little better, hmm? Now, have you got your costume for the play?”
It was 1920 Christmas Eve. Evie had just turned ten years old two months prior. Lucky for her, Mother Superior had chosen Evie for such a big role. Mary. The Mother Mary. Mary of Nazareth. Such a commitment for a small girl. And lucky for Finn, Polly volunteered him for the role of Joseph of Nazareth. It was in effort to get more involved in the church and Evie’s school activities.
And lucky for all the babies in the world, Mother Superior decided on a doll to play little baby Jesus. But not so lucky for everyone sitting in the Saint Anne’s children’s theater that Evie’s best friend, Martha O’Connell, was playing an angel holding a candle. A real candle with a flame. But we can’t put all the blame on poor Martha who was doing the job she was not being paid for.
And how lucky for Grace, who for the first time, was joining a real family function that had nothing to do with business.
It was a beautiful evening, really. Christmas Eve, when everyone could have been home, shoving their faces with whatever it was, were graced with such a show. Evie awkwardly walked out, looking stiff as ever. “Oh for fucks sake, Esme,” John hissed, opening the back door and pushing her and the four children in. “I told you we had to leave at six. Next time, start your bloody hair at noon.”
Tommy didn’t even need to look back to know who was making the ruckus. “Always my fuckin’ family, eh?” he cursed, annoyed as he gave a lengthy lecture the night before on how no one better ruin his baby girl’s performance. It’s her eighth function this year, Tommy, Arthur groaned, but agreed…unwillingly…to go. Poor little Evie, up there with stage fright, joined all the glances looking at John. Polly hissed for him to sit his bloody arse down.
Nervously, poor Evie sat on a stool, listening to Jennie Joyce say, “ A long time ago in a town called Nazareth there lived a young woman called Mary and a young carpenter called Joseph. They loved each other very much and they also loved God very much. Mary of Nazareth was very special because God had chosen her to be the Mother of His Only Son. God sent the angel Gabriel to ask Mary if she would be the Mother of God.” That’s when Martha entered, a candle shaking in her hand.
“ Mary, you are the chosen one. Soon you will have a baby boy. He will be very special. He will be the Son of God and you must call him Jesus,” Martha said, wincing as she tried very hard not to burn the place down. She slowly exits and pauses, giving Evie a look. “Exit,” she mouthed. Finn sighed, and waved to her. Poor Evie, not being able to read lips, squinted. “Exit the stage!”
“She forgot to exit,” Tommy sighed, trying to catch her attention. Evie looked at the audience. “ EXIT!” he mouthed, trying to be discreet, pointing to the right stage exit. Huh? She mouthed. “Oh bloody fuckin’ ‘ell,” he rubbed his temple. Grace winced trying to help him, standing and pointing with both fingers. That is when Finn walked on stage and grabbed her arm.
“ Come on, wife ,” he said, hooking his arm with hers. “ We must leave now . ”
Evie whined, pulling her arm back. “That isn’t the line,” she whispered.
“Yeah, well you forgot to exit,” he grumbled.
She panicked and gasped, “oh, shit!” When she realized she said it far too loud, she covered her mouth and said, “sorry!” The audience started to laugh. She ran off and Finn quickly followed, his fake beard falling from his face. The play went on, but not any smoother. The church was lended a donkey for the show under the conditions the children didn’t feed it. It was on a special diet. Let’s feed it! Was what they all said when Mother Superior left backstage.
“ Mary rode to Bethlehem on a donkey, with Joseph walking by her side. Remember, Mary was about to have a baby, so it was a very long dangerous journey. Mary and Joseph were very grateful to their faithful donkey who carried Mary so bravely and so carefully ,” Jennie went on.
Arthur, half dozing off, squinted and looked at his flask then back on stage. “Fuckin ‘ell, is that a real jack arse up there?”
“Evie,” Finn whined. “Your lines…your lines.”
“Oh, right,” she nodded. “Thank you, Donkey….” She slid off, her blue scarf getting disheveled. As she slid off, she got a whiff close to its behind. “Jesus….Too many cheese cubes for you, Arnold.”
From the back, one of the other children shouted, “no problem!”
“Oh my god….” Finn was about to blow a gasket! “Does anyone here actually remember their bloody lines, but me? No problem. No problem!? You’re supposed to say ‘you’re welcome!’ No one in bloody Bethlehem said no problem, Duncan!” he shouted and poor Aunty Polly was mortified.
“No one spoke English in Bethlehem, Shelby!” he shouted back.
Finn threw up his fist, but Evie grabbed him, “Finn, your beard…Arnold’s eating your beard.”
John tapped on Tommy’s shoulder, “and what were you saying last night? About us ruining your baby girl’s performance?”
As life, it went on and on and on. “ During the night Mary gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger full of hay. ”
Before putting the doll on the hay bed, Evie with her fumbling hands, dropped the doll. “Oh, no!” she cried, as it fell and everyone gasped as baby Jesus lost his head and it rolled down and off the stage. Mother Superior nearly died! She cried and held her chest. How could her performance go so wrong?! Evie quickly scrambled and grabbed the doll's head, shoving its mangled body in the bed. That’s when Martha entered again with that damn candle. Candles and hay don’t mix very well, and so when she dropped the candle and hay lit up like everyone’s tree, people started to panic.
“Right,” Tommy said, smacking his hands on his knees and getting up. “I’m going to get the car, I’d appreciate it if everyone just followed.”
Finn was done. He was completely done. Rage quitting, he took off his cloak and half eaten beard, and threw it on the ground. “I quit!”
“Finn, my linens!” Polly cried. He stormed off stage while the other boys poured water on the hay bed. Poor Martha was never allowed to hold a candle again, and Evie? She would best serve not as a lead character. Evie followed after Finn. In one car, six people were shoved.
“I think it went rather well,” Arthur said.
“Yeah, Arthur,” Tommy said. “Things tend to go rather well when you’re drunk, don’t they, eh?”
“Things go better when certain people can remember their lines,” Finn grumbled. He glared at Evie who just pouted.
“Don’t listen to him, baby girl,” Tommy said, smiling at her through the mirror. “You were the best one up there.”
Giggling, she stuck her tongue out and said, “thank you, daddy.” Her eyes traveled down to Finn’s shoes, and pinched her nose. “You stepped in Arnold’s shit.” Out of everyone, poor Finn had the roughest night. That was for certain.

Rider family + languages
I've been going through the first seven Alex Rider books looking for references to what languages Alex and his family know, so I thought I might share my findings.
Alex: Is consistently said to speak French, German, and Spanish, although his proficiency level varies. John: Is said to be fluent in seven languages, one of which is French. Helen: Enjoyed foreign films and planned to move to France with John, likely spoke French. Ian: Taught Alex French, German, and Spanish, and talked about Latin and etymology with Alex.
Evidence/quotes given under the cut.
The Evidence
I mean, [Alex]’s lived abroad, so he now speaks French, German and Spanish. (SB, p.78)
But Ian Rider had made certain that his nephew spoke French almost as soon as he spoke English. Not to mention German and Spanish as well. (PB, p.122)
Then [Garcia] had spoken at length, in Spanish, with Turner. Alex had spent the best part of a year in Barcelona with his uncle and understood enough of the language to follow what they were saying. (SK, p.183)
The older of the two called himself Hunter. He was English, although he spoke seven languages so fluently that he could pass himself off as a native of many of the countries he found himself in. (ES, p.10)
[Alex's] French was almost as good as Jack’s, but then he had started learning when he was three years old. (ES, p.135)
Italian was one language Ian Rider hadn't taught him. (S, p.16)
“Funambulism,” Ian Rider said. “What's that?” “It’s Latin, Alex. Funis means rope. And ambulare is to walk. Funambulism is the art of tightrope walking.” (AA, p.82)
[Alex] is known to be fluent in two languages - French and Spanish - and is also proficient in German. (SH, p.35)
[Helen] went to the cinema a lot - she preferred foreign films if she had a choice. (SH, p.190)
[John]’d start a new life in France with you and your mum. I should have mentioned that he spoke fluent French, by the way. If things had gone the way they'd planned, you'd be speaking French now. You'd be in a lycée in Marseilles or somewhere and you wouldn’t know anything about all this. (SH, p.194)
+ Bonus Yassen:
Because he's part of the family in my heart. And because he's noteworthy for speaking nine different languages, including English (with no or only a very faint Russian accent), French, and Japanese.
On this night [Yassen] had been working with a tape recorder and a well-thumbed exercise book. He was teaching himself Japanese, one of the nine languages he had made it his business to learn. (ES, p.204)

John's Boys, Chapter 1
Relationship(s): Bonham Walker & John Winchester, Abeline Walker/Bonham Walker, Dean Winchester & Sam Winchester
Tags/Warnings: Abandonment, Angst, Heavy Angst, Family Dynamics, Crossover, Alternate Universe- Canon Divergence
Summary:
After John learns the truth of what happened in the nursery that night, he can't just sit by while a monster like that roams the earth. But, he knows he can't drag his boys on a cross-country revenge trip with him. So, he calls on an old friend for a small favor. Bonham knew from the start that this wouldn't be a temporary thing. Too often, he's seen his old army friends that "just need some time" go off the deep end and never return. But he also knows that someone needs to look after John's boys if the worst happens. So he agrees to a small favor.
Written for @angstober Day 21: Abandoned
A/N: Yes this is another Walker/Supernatural crossover that has both too much and not enough thought behind it why do you ask :)))))))

--------------------------
If there was one thing Bonham had learned from his time in the Marines, it was that nine times out of ten, if you got a call from an Old Army Buddy, it was usually a bad sign.
The only thing that was worse: they showed up at your front door without calling first.
When he saw John Winchester’s impala in the drive leading up to the main house, Bonham told Abby not to worry about it and that he’d handle it. It’s not that he thought John was a bad person; far from it. The man had saved his bacon more than a few times overseas. But showing up like this, out of the blue, without so much as a letter between them in years, could only mean something bad was coming.
He’d heard things through the grapevine about other members of their troop. Men disappearing to their old friends’ apartments without a note to their wives. Men leaving suicide notes in voicemails that their families wouldn’t hear until months later. Men just disappearing and relying on their friends to keep the secret.
When Bonham saw the carseats in the back of the car, his stomach dropped. This couldn’t be anything good.
“She’s dead, Bonham.” John told him. “She’s dead. The house is gone. And I can’t- I can’t just sit here when the bastard that killed her is still out there.”
“I know.” He didn’t imagine he'd be thinking differently if Abby had been taken from him like that. “But you’ve got two boys to look after. You need to think about them.”
“I’m trying to think about them,” John insisted. “I can’t- I can’t let them live in a world with that monster in it.”
“I know, John. But you gotta let the cops do their jobs. That’s what we pay taxes for. Just- You can stay here if you need a place but-”
“But I gotta get back on my feet?” John chuckled darkly. “I can’t, Bon. I-I can’t. The things I’ve seen, the things I know…. I can’t just let it go, I can’t. But…..” he sighed. “But I know I can’t bring the boys down with me.”
“John-”
“You don’t have to say yes. I’ve got other people I can ask-”
“John, you need help.”
“Why the hell do you think I’m here?!” John snapped. “I need- I need them to be safe. But I need to handle this myself and I can’t- I can’t take them with me. They don’t deserve to get pulled into this mess.”
“They don’t deserve their father to abandon them either.”
“I’m not abandoning them!” John started pacing. “I just- I need time. I know what I’m doing, I just need time. A year, maybe less. Hopefully less.”
Bonham let him get the energy out.
He shouldn’t agree to this. John needed help, not a revenge mission. Maybe he should agree on the condition John went to a therapist instead of a gun shop.
But John wouldn’t agree with it. And that wasn’t the only person he had to talk to, and he knew what Abby would say.
“Let me run it by my wife,” he said eventually. “Why don’t you bring the boys inside and we can talk?”
John’s shoulders relaxed. “Alright. Just give me a minute.”
—-----------
“Are we really thinking about this?” Abby asked him quietly. They’d retreated to the kitchen to talk while John watched his boys in the living room.
“I don’t agree with it either, Abby, but I don’t know what he’ll do if we don’t. Those boys need a home and if John won’t give it to them….”
Abby sighed. “I know, Bon, but we just had a boy ourselves in case you forgot and this hasn’t exactly been our best year….” She nervously twisted a dish towel in her hand and needlessly cleaned the counter. “How long did he say? A year?”
“He’s gonna aim for less than that but yes. But Abby….” He put a hand on her shoulder. “We have to be ready for it to be longer than that.”
She sighed and leaned into him. “I want to say yes. You know that.”
“I know.” Bonham kissed the top of his head. “If you think we can handle it, I can go buy another crib today.”
She tilted her head up for a kiss. “...Tell him we can do it. For one year. After that, he’s on his own.”
Bonham kissed her softly. “Alright. Make me a list of things we need for them and we can be set up in time for dinner.”
Abby hummed. “Find out what Dean’s favorite is and see if John will join us, would you?”
“Of course.”
—----------------
“But why do we have to stay here? Why can’t I go with you? I can help!”
John stared at his oldest son. How was he supposed to explain this to someone who wasn’t even old enough for kindergarten yet? “Dean…. This is something I have to do alone. And I need you to look after Sammy until I’m done.”
Dean swallowed hard and nodded tearfully. “O-Okay. When’re you gonna be done?”
John didn’t have an answer, so he made up one. “I’ll be back in time for your next birthday, okay? Be good for Bonham and Abby and look after Sammy for me, okay?”
Dean nodded and rubbed his eyes. “Okay. I-I can do that.” He bit his lip, then threw himself at John’s leg in a hug. “Come back soon, okay?”
“I will,” John lied. “Be good, okay?”
Dean nodded furiously, still not letting go of him. “I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, Dean. I love you too.”
John hugged him one last time, then got back in his car and drove away, leaving his sons in the rearview mirror.
He just needed to kill this demon. Once the demon was dead, they could be a safe, happy family again.
He wasn’t abandoning them, he just needed time.

James V of Scotland was born on 10th April 1512.
James was son of King James IV and his queen Margaret Tudor, a daughter of Henry VII of England, and was the only legitimate child of James IV to survive infancy, it was through this line that Mary Queen of Scots based her claim to the throne of England, and indeed her son, who took the throne after Elizabeth died.
James was born at Linlithgow Palace and baptised on April 11th, receiving the titles Duke of Rothesay and Prince and Grand Steward of Scotland. He became king at just seventeen months old when his father was killed at the Battle of Flodden Field on 9th September 1513. James was “crowned” in the Chapel Royal at Stirling Castle on 21st September 1513.
During his childhood, like so many of the Stewart monarchs, the country was ruled by regents, first by his mother, until she remarried the following year, and then by John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, who was next in line to the throne after James and his younger brother, the posthumously-born Alexander Stewart, Duke of Ross.
Other regents included Robert Maxwell, 5th Lord Maxwell, a member of the Council of Regency who was also bestowed as Regent of Arran. Queen Margaret´s tempestuous private life complicated her son´s childhood, and after she divorced her second husband, Archibald Douglas 6th Earl of Angus, the Earl kidnapped young James. For over two years he held him as a virtual prisoner, showering him with gifts and introducing him to a round of unsuitable pleasures. James loathed him and finally managed to escape in 1528 and assumed the reins of government himself.
James´ personal rule began by savagely pursuing his opponents and he hounded the Earl of Angus out of Scotland. James combined suspicion of nobles with a popular touch, travelling anonymously among Scottish people as the ´Gudeman o´Ballengeich´. John Knox described him thus: ´he was called of some, a good poor man´s king; of others he was termed a murderer of the nobility, and one that had decreed their whole destruction´.
A highly strung, intelligent man who alternated between black depression and bouts of feverish energy, James had already fathered at least nine illegitimate children by a series of mistresses by the time a marriage was arranged for him.
He married Madeleine, daughter of Francois I of France, and the young couple returned to Scotland in May 1537. The Princess was a fragile woman, and the Scottish climate did not agree with her she died in her husband’s arms on 7th July 1537, seven weeks after her arrival in Edinburgh.
In governing, James increased his income by tightening control over royal estates and from the profits of justice, customs and feudal rights. He also gave his illegitimate sons lucrative benefices, diverting substantial church wealth into his coffers. James spent a large amount of his wealth on building work at Stirling Castle, Falkland Palace, Linlithgow Palace and Holyrood and built up a collection of tapestries from those inherited from his father.
In 1538 he married another French lady, the widowed Mary of Guise, tall, well-built and already the mother of two sons. She had two more sons by James but they both died in infancy within hours of each other in 1541. The death of the Kings’ mother in 1541 removed any incentive for peace with England, and war broke out.
Initially the Scots won a victory at the Battle of Haddon Rig in August 1542. The Imperial ambassador in London, Eustace Chapuys, wrote on 2nd October that the Scottish ambassadors ruled out a conciliatory meeting between James and Henry VIII in England until the pregnant Mary of Guise delivered her child. Henry would not accept this condition and mobilised his army north.
James was with his army at Lauder on 31 October 1542. Although he hoped to invade England, his nobles were reluctant. He returned to Edinburgh on the way writing a letter in French to his wife from Falahill mentioning he had three days of illness.
Next month his army suffered a serious defeat at the Battle of Solway Moss, a loss caused by infighting within the nobles on who was in command.
He took ill shortly after this, on 6th December; by some accounts this was a nervous collapse caused by the defeat, although some historians consider that it may just have been an ordinary fever. Whatever the cause of his illness, he was on his deathbed at Falkland Palace when his only surviving legitimate child, a girl, was born.
Sir George Douglas of Pittendreich brought the news of the king´s death to Berwick. He said James died at midnight on Thursday 15 December; the king was talking but delirious and spoke no "wise words." Having said that, history reports he uttered the following; 'It cam' wi' a lass, and it will gang wi' a lass,' meaning that whilst the Stewarts came to power through marrying a princess, the Stewart line would end with his daughter as queen. Of course this wasn’t true so I wonder to myself at times why such importance seems to have been placed on his words through the centuries.
He was buried at Holyrood Abbey alongside his first wife Madeleine and his two sons. The tomb was probably destroyed during the Rough Wooing in 1544, they were again “violated” at the end of James VII reign when the people of Edinburgh rioted. Queen Victoria arranged for the vault to be repaired.
There was another story regarding the grave of James V that happened in 1683, read about that on the great web pages of Dr Mark Jardine here https://drmarkjardine.wordpress.com/.../the-tomb-of.../

richardiii and frideswide lovell? I am only just hearing of this
Hi! We don't know the truth and don't know the exact details, but yes, that's definitely a (potential) relationship worth discussing!
For those who are unaware, Frideswide Lovell was the daughter of John, 8th Baron Lovell, and his wife Joan Beaumont. This made her the sister of Francis Lovell, the future chamberlain and best friend of Richard III - who she may have had a personal connection to in her own right.
Frideswide seems to have been much younger than her siblings and was not born before 1363, most likely in 1464. She was orphaned soon after her birth, with her father dying a year later and her mother a year after that, leaving her to spend her childhood and adolescence in the household of her brother's parents-in-law. The first properly contemporary mention of her is found in the 1470 pardon Edward IV's government issued for Henry FitzHugh and all those in his household. Unfortunately, not much is known about her beyond that, including the kind of education she received.
When she was around 16, Frideswide married the 15-year-old Edward Norris, oldest son of William Norris of Yattendon and his first wife Joan/Jane de Vere. The teenage couple had their first son, John, in 1481, followed by a second son, Henry, a year later. The latter would be executed in 1536 as one of Anne Boleyn's alleged lovers.
Here's where it gets interesting. As we know, Richard III became King in 1483 after deposing his nephews. Michèle Schindler, author of the book Lovell Our Dogge: The Life of Viscount Lovell, Closest Friend of Richard III and Failed Regicide, has speculated that Richard may have been having an affair with Frideswide, aka his best friend's sister, during that time.
To quote Schindler from a blog post about Frideswide:
In 1483, Frideswide received a "reward" of 50 marks from Richard III after he was crowned king. Perhaps it was this, her support and closeness to her brother`s close friend, that caused a rift between her and her husband, and the couple was divided over political opinions which they needed some time to overcome. Edward`s father William, who had originally supported the Lancastrian cause, had accepted Edward IV as king, but rebelled against Richard [in support of the Princes in the Tower] in autumn 1483. Edward Norris may have supported this, though he never acted against Richard, while Frideswide seemed to support Richard.
However, there is evidence from 1484 which throws a rather different light on Frideswide`s marriage and her relationship to Richard. While her "reward" from 1483 could well have been simply a gesture of friendship by the new king towards his closest friend`s sister, their interactions clearly did not stop there. In August 1484, Richard granted her an annuity of 100 marks, a rather large sum. While this has traditionally been assumed to have been because of her father-in-law`s rebellion, leaving her husband disinherited, this does not seem to have been the cause. None of William`s other children, nor his wife, was granted anything by Richard.
Naturally, it could be that Richard chose to favour Francis`s sister over the rest of her marital family, but this is contradicted by two facts: one, that the grant was for unspecified "services" to the king, not, as that to other traitor`s relatives, as a compensation, a generous gift by the king. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, is that a second grant of an annuity of 100 marks was made from the same venue, dating from 10th January 1485. This grant was not a confirmation of the first, but was added to it, meaning that Frideswide received 200 marks yearly from Richard, a sizable sum, more than the Countess of Oxford, or even his own mother-in-law, received.
The key to this may lie in the fact that the second grant was dated back nine months, and appears to have been made just after Frideswide gave birth to her third child, a daughter called Anne. Very notably, the grants to her, for unspecified services to the king, have the same wording as one to Katherine Haute, a woman often assumed to have been the mother of Richard`s illegitimate daughter Katherine, Richard made years earlier.
Equally notable is that Richard made grants to Francis on the same days as he made those to Frideswide, as a compensation for equally unspecified services, and that Frideswide appeared to have lived with her brother [rather than her husband] while pregnant.
That Henry Norris, in later years, appeared to not treat Anne as his sister, and that William Norris, Edward`s father, later favoured Frideswide`s sons, even apparently helping them become established at court, but not Anne, might also point towards the idea that there was at least a question mark over Anne`s paternity, and that she may have been Richard`s.
If so, Frideswide was in a bad position after Richard`s defeat and death at Bosworth only eight and a half months after her daughter`s birth. It seems, though, that she and her husband Edward made the best of it, and even reconcilliated. In around 1486, Frideswide gave birth to her last child, a girl called Margaret, presumably after Edward`s sister. From surviving documents, Margaret seemed much closer to her brother Henry and her grandfather William, again showing up a difference to Anne."
Of course, we don't explicitly know if this is true - and if it is true, we don't know the exact details - but the circumstantial evidence is indeed very strong, and it seems very plausible to me. I would love to know more about Frideswide, who seems to have had a very interesting and tragic, albeit mostly unknown, life.
In short, it's very interesting and opens up a lot of possibilities, for sure!
#ask#richard iii#frideswide lovell#my post#I've seen some theories that this potential affair began after Richard's son died and/or because he & Anne began drifting apart after#though in truth this is pure speculation#and if Richard was having an affair with Frideswide - which imo seems fairly likely - she was clearly being favored by him from 1483#This theory also relies on the idea that Richard never had affairs during his marriage to Anne before - which is far from certain#We don't know when his two illegitimate children were born but it is in fact entirely possible (imo based on surviving evidence#more probable) that one or both of them were conceived after 1472#again - we don't know for sure but the circumstantial evidence is strong and it's very interesting!

Mercenaries unleashed (a tf2 Loonatics unleashed au) part 1
Pitch who's the teams Scout (the character type, not as in his job) was once an awkward and shy 15-year-old boy, but after "the light of the nine." (The MacGuffin that gave the team their powers) he becomes more confident and cockier, the team still trets him like a kid because he is one, he dresses the same as baseball player, looks like a 1930s cartoon character and has an almost completely black, white and gray color palette except a red "S" on his jersey, he doesn't know what it stands for.
John doe is the teams Soldier which you would not know if you just talked to him because in terms of personality him and the OG Soldier are complete opposites, all they really have in common is their similar love for violence, John is mild mannered, unless you are the monster of the week then he will kill you with no remorse :), he also speaks with a French accent and therefore his body rejects him, he has the potential to be the most powerful of the team if he could just make his powers not hate him, he (despite not acting similar to Soldier) is essentially just Soldiers clone appearance wise the only differences is that he has racoon parts, his outfit is ratty and ripped up, and he has long hair which makes his powers hate him even more.
Matches is the team crypted not much is known about them, she acks like a monster but he's the only reasonable merc, and just do what's funniest at the moment, they look as if a unicorn and a dragon got sown together.

| jacob elordi & he/him | Congratulations, ADAM BENNETT survived another night. The town would certainly feel less safe without a them close by. Not to mention, we can’t lose another DEPUTY, plus they’re only TWENTY NINE years old. Crazy to think, it’s been FOUR MONTHS since their arrival, though in a place like Oblitus it can feel much longer. Good thing they’re staying at the MOTEL. Almost like it happened yesterday, they still remember JACKSON, MS, and where they came from. It’s no secret, they were HANDCUFFED IN THE BACK OF A POLICE CAR when they came across the tree, and is still keeping them up at night. Truth be told, they’re awfully LIGHTHEARTED and SECRETIVE, but they’ve survived this long. Well, it’s almost day light again, maybe they’ll play FROM EDEN by HOZIER this time. Welcome to another night in Oblitus, please don’t open the doors.
BASIC INFORMATION
NAME: Adam Ray Bennett
NICKNAMES: Benny
BIRTHDAY: April 24th '95
AGE: 29
HOMETOWN: Jackson, MS
BIRTHPLACE: OBX, NC
RELIGION: Agnostic
EDUCATION: High-School
RELATIONSHIP STATUS/FAMILY: Single, 3 sisters on the outside
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
HEIGHT: 6'5
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Light Brown
BUILD: Jacob Elordi
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Tattoos, scars
PERSONALITY & BEHAVIOR
HOBBIES: Reading, running, picking up new skills
LIKES: cold weather, 90's movies, colour green
DISLIKES: talking abut himself, people who brag a lot, hot weather, books with too much exposition, sound of children crying
QUIRKS: rubs the back of his head when he can't find the words
STRENGTHS: physically strong, good shot, perceptive, patient
WEAKNESSES: clumsy, has face blindness, takes too many risks (doesn't think things through)
WHERE WAS YOUR CHARACTER WHEN THEY SAW THE TREE AND THE MURDER OF CROWS? WHERE WERE THEY GOING? WERE THEY TRAVELLING ALONE? HOW DID THEY FEEL?
The cuffs were itching his wrists, tied behind his back as he leaned uncomfortably against the leather seat of the police car. His legs had no space, crushed between the passenger and the backseat. He was trying to recall Beths number, she was his best bet making bail but he was stuck midway through. Fucking phones, no one actually memorised numbers these days, and calling up the only number he did remember was worse than jail. So he gave up, or he was about to, when the cop at front made a sudden break. -- He struggled to see what happened, with night swallowing up the sky, but it appeared to be a tree blocking the road. Unusual, maybe, but a summer storm did pass these ends recently so he was not exactly surprised. -- It seemed neither was the cop, because he was back in the car calling in a detour. But the dispatcher did not respond. In fact, no one ever responded again.
DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTERS FIRST DAY/NIGHT IN TOWN. DID THEY ARRIVE IN THE DAYTIME? WERE THEY WARNED BY THE RESIDENTS? DID THEY HAVE TO BE RESTRAINED?
Unfortunate enough to arrive at night, with hands cuffed and a moron in the drivers seat, his survival can be painted a miracle. The monsters, pale and calm, never running but always one step closer --flooded the place. Screams echoed through the distance, and the idiot cop thought it a good idea to go exploring. It didn't take long for the monsters to get to the other, ripping his face open, breaking his bones -- with both struggle and luck, the cop and the criminal ended up running through the woods, deep into hiding. The cop did not survive for long, having sustained injuries of no return, 'least not without instant intervention, but the cuff keys were stuck on him. After freeing himself from the shackles of law enforcement, he took the dead cops gun -- and then had a bright idea. Swiftly, he put on the others uniform, took his badge and assumed his identity. From then on, he has been Adam Bennett -- the deputy, the protector.
WHAT DID THEY LEAVE BEHIND? WHAT WAS THEIR LIFE LIKE ON THE OUTSIDE?
Adam was born Ethan John Crane, before he assumed his new identity as a cop -- he grew up on the outskirts of Outer Banks until his family moved to Jackson following his fathers business opportunities.
He was neither rich nor poor, but his family had everything at their disposal to make his and his sisters' childhoods relatively normal.
His father, however, had a secret family and eventually it blew up both families to bits. Without his father in the picture, his mother had to return to work and being the only man in the family, it was expected of him to help out financially as well.
He became a contractor, taking on jobs as they came and any plans or hopes of higher education felt more distant with each passing year.
The trouble hit when the time came to put his sisters through college, he had to make money fast. But he didn't really know how so he started selling weed on the side. Time-consuming and not a big payoff, Ethan wanted 'in' on bigger deals.
As he got into the business of smuggling, he was promoted up the ranks quickly. He had a knack for people, could sell easily and he was making a good buck. That was until a deal got busted by undercover cops and he was in such deep shit that ending up in Oblitus came as a sort of miracle. Or an early sentence perhaps, he's an optimist though.
Now he lives life pretending to be a cop, hoping no one would catch on. And so far, no one has.

My dive back into my old FFnet favorites continues and I'm bringing some more recs here for anyone interested in them. Still giving them my own summaries to convey my own impressions of the fics.
As You Wish by YarningChick - A fusion of The Cat Returns and The Princess Bride. Haru is the fiercely proud daughter of a samurai who has vowed to marry none other than her sweetheart - not even his death at sea could change her mind. Unfortunately, the King has decided he is going to marry Haru, whether she likes this idea or not.
Haru/Baron is the main ship and the fic itself is rated G. The main cast is all characters from The Cat Returns and while Haru is very different from her movie self, it's still a really fun and enjoyable re-imagining of The Princess Bride's plot. YarningChick has written a lot of fics for The Cat Returns - most AUs of some sort - and they're pretty much all enjoyable. So not only does the fic get a recommendataion, the author does too.
It looks so far like all YarningChick's fics are on Ao3, so that's where the links will lead.
The Angel's Knight by Philip S - Sixteen years after her death saving the world from Glory, Buffy is given the chance to return to life to aid Angel in one final Apocalypse to determine the world's future. But the truth of what's really happening is bigger than anyone could have possibly imagined.
I remember this one especially for it's rather fascinating take on what happened the night Eyghon killed Giles' pre-series and helps to explain some of the inconsistencies with his earlier portrayal and retcons made as characterization marched on. It's also got my favorite take on Catherine Madison post-trophy-ification and an interesting interpretation of the Key.
Rated T, has Buffy/Angel as the main ship, and is, unfortunately, not to be found on Ao3 yet.
BtVS: The College Years by Philip S - A Season 4 AU. With the Slayer beyond their control for the moment, the Watcher's Council chooses to reactivate the Slayer's counterpart: the Huntsman. Meanwhile, Buffy's dealing not only with college, but with the arrival of soldiers intending to fight the good fight… and whose presence will unearth more of Sunnydale's bloodstained history.
This one I remember really enjoying for the take on the Slayer that it was one of two powerful, ancient spirits. And also for incorporating Angel's return to being human via the Mohra demon, but not allowing him to roll back time like in canon. It's obvious to the reader what Angel's in store for as the fic goes on, but how he gets there is pretty fascinating.
It is rated M for a non-con encounter between Buffy and the first guy to become the Huntsman. So reader beware. The main ship is Buffy/Angel. And, like the rest of Philip S's work, it's not on Ao3 at this time.
If It's Not One Thing… by Gabrielle Lawson - There's never a dull moment on Deep Space Nine as murder, secretive aliens, and Julian's past collide. An alternate take on Julian Bashir's past written before the reveal of his parents or genetic engineering.
Probably my favorite fic about Julian. His backstory here is really well thought out and really quite tragic and it definitely captures the feel of early seasons DS9, with the tensions between Starfleet and the Bajorans playing an important part of the storyline.
It's rated T and is on Ao3 now, along with Gabrielle Lawson's other works. Lawson's Deep Space Nine fics are all pretty good from what I remember, though this one was my favorite.
The Geek's Field Guide to Arachnids by likethekoschka - A big robot spider, anaphylactic shock, and a number of near-death-experiences… all just another ordinary day on Atlantis for John and Rodney. First in a series staring John Sheppard and Rodney McKay in an established relationship, written by liketheriver and koschka under their combined penname.
While at least one of the writers moved to Ao3, it doesn't look like they brought any of their ffnet stuff - solo or cowritten - with them. Which is a shame, but I can hold out hope these'll get migrated to somewhere safer than ffnet eventually. (Like Ao3…)
All of the fics in this series are rated T and I cannot recommend the series enough for Stargate Atlantis fans. It's incredibly well written and a lot of fun to read. Features what is probably my favorite version of Radek Zelenka.
Atlas by distractedKat - Star Trek Kelvin-verse fic set after the 2009 movie and AU from there. Kirk throws himself into aiding the rebuilding of Starfleet in the wake of the Narada disaster as Starfleet Academy has found itself short staffed. This may not have been such a good idea, as his many talents have caught the eye of a corrupt Admiral…
An eventual Kirk/Spock fic that treats Spock and Uhura's friendship really well. Rated T and is up on Ao3.

one of my favorite occurrences in tlt is characters seeing Something Horribly Out of Place and go “thats none of my or anybody elses business”
off the top of my head we got (spoilers):
- harrow immediately clocks “dulcie”‘s beguiling corpse, decides not to say anything and yet acts like the most serial killer that’s ever serially killed for... some reason. - same with ianthe, except she just doesn’t give a shit - cytherea notices corona isn’t a necromancer but doesn’t even deign to make a sibylline reference to it to gideon - ianthe (x2) with the gigantic “you lied to us” in the final room - john and mercy don’t feel the need to investigate further when genius nine year old harrow doesn’t seem to grasp something as simple as g1deon’s name - mercy (x2) accidentally finds out about harrow and doesn’t. mention. it. ever. again. to anybody. - augustine, mercy (x3) and ianthe (x3) about the multiple murder attempts - ianthe (x4, girl really?) when harrow informs her that cytherea’s body, the body of the woman who took her whole arm off, is walking around (not including the monster-under-the-bed version because what the fuck was even going on there) - harrow (x2) giving only like... half a thought to the fact that there’s a traitor in the emperor’s inner circle and that’s that. daddy issues are more pressing. - unbeknownst to anyone, ortus knows what happened to harrow’s parents and his father but keeps his mouth shut, but that’s just typical ninth house behavior - I’m including everyone on shore in the final chapter of NtN when ianthe is running past them screaming in agony to fight the angry revenant of a planet whose power level is the same as God’s - aka the entirety of the Solar System - one on one. In my mind they don’t even try to stop her
in conclusion, ianthe, my guy, what are you doing? care to share anything with the class?? please???
#im excusing mercy on account of being 10000 yo and being right about everything all the time#also i didnt include gideon and nona cause theyre just oblivious#also also i havent included anyone that has made even a teeny tiny reference to the Horribly Out of Place Thing#this is just. nothing to see here.#its just harrow ianthe and the old guys basically#the rest are much much more transparent starting from palamedes who shares everything with the class#the locked tomb#nona the ninth#harrow the ninth#gideon the ninth

213341 Art Studio IIIA ⋆ Weeks 5 - Eueuguuughhhh
The plan: make something entirely out of my small selection of bargain bin albums, and present it.
Keeping in mind, the plunderphonics must flow. No further depth to the samples used, presentation is to be entirely encased in its technique - like any artwork produced prior to the invention of the camera.
So I could actually hear the new albums I brought, I ordered this bad boy on TradeMe.
…and it came not even two days later (albeit twice as expensive as I had hoped).
Without hesitation, I put it straight to work, ‘ripping’ audio all nine of my CDs, to which I stored them neatly both on my PC and on OneDrive, prepped and ready for all my sampling exploits.
Giving them a skimmed listen, I can proudly say that they're all terribly mediocre in their own special way:
The Shadows - Dreamtime: An instrumental soft-rock cover album featuring a pedal-steel guitar that gets old, really fast.
Theo Eastwind - One: Easy-to-forget folk rock with no dynamic flow whatsoever. It's just... loud.
Kim Stockwood - 12 Years Old: Decent, chill pop. I could hear a couple sample-able moments in there somewhere.
Fruit - Here for Days: Another folk rock album?? Slightly more memorable than One, but just as loud.
MC Trey - Tapastry Tunes: Probably the best one out of the bunch, but her voice throws me off - she's Fijian-Australian, why does she have a British accent? She had an interview with Rolling Stone, why does her channel have 274 subscribers?
James Hill - A Flying Leap: Instrumental ukulele album :(
Ylva Skog - Terra Firma: Avante-garde-y classical music, okay sampling material.
Clay Aiken - Measure of a Man: What? You haven't heard of THE Clay Aiken? 2003 American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken? Featuring an NZ-only cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water? Burn in hell, Clay.
Imelda May - Love Tattoo: Another acutally nice album; a whole lot of rockabilly jams! Also, the only album that the cashier recognized.
I also added, from my dad's records, this extra CD to my collection, called “Cool Fever - From Disco Jazz to Jazz House” that, while available in physical form through resellers, cannot be found in any digitally archived form online - and that added spice of obscurity is fine by me.
John Oswald! We're overdue talking about him. While we've made a fair bit of mention towards the second, isolated invention of plunderphonics in the Bronx; John Oswald's definition of the genre saw more 'academic' origins.
With works stemming as far back as the late 1960s, his time at the Simon Fraser University would see him participating in the 1968-onwards World Soundscape Project (an ecologically-focused wildlife sound collage which is quite self-explanatory); using these sound collage methods, and informed by the literary Cut Up Technique popularised by William S. Burroughs, Oswald would perform various sampling experiments from the mid-70s onwards.
In 1985, Oswald presented to the Toronto Wired Society Electro-Acoustic Conference his essay on plunderphonics - which coined the term. His paper laid out the philosophy behind the genre, and its place within the history - and legality - of music.
He then applied these philosophies with the 1988 EP (and subsequent 1989 album release) - Plunderphonic - with a parodical take on the album cover for Michael Jackson's Bad, where MJ's torso is collaged with a nude model.
This accompanies the central track to the release, daB, which jumbles around the song Bad to an extent not dissimilar to Collage #1 ("Blue Suede") 28 years earlier - to take the 'lowbrow' pop hit and flip it into the 'highbrow'.
youtube
What it accomplishes in its seven-minute runtime is a technical marvel, a satiric time capsule that sounds as fresh as it sounds incoherently groovy, humorous, and even spooky.
Although Plunderphonic was distributed freely and at expense to Oswald, it goes without saying that Oswald landed himself in legal trouble due to the nature of this release; with the Canadian Recording Industry Association ordering the destruction of all undistributed copies.
The music video for daB released in 2016 after two years of production, and visually ensnares the idiosyncrasies of daB to a 'T'. In a later edition of the Plunderphonical Chronicle, I will mention the symbiotic relationship that the genre, in a specific, 'meme-y' form, has had with video editing.
In 1993, Oswald released his magnum opus, the logical endpoint to the genre, Plexure. The following screenshot is taken from the official entry on plunderphonics.com:
Micro-sampling just about every charting CD release from the decade, Plexure features 20 minutes of "megaplundermorphonemiclonics", with a new sample appearing roughly every second to a total of "1,001 electroquoted contemporary pop stars*" as well as "*including hundreds of morphosoniferous performers".
It's best compared to quickly changing radio stations, but you have to appreciate the technical prowess that goes into an album as DENSE as this.
youtube
It's an intense listen, but I'd recommend it at your Plexure.

Look who just woke up- is that OLIVER STARK? No, I must have been mistaken, that’s MATTHEW SCOTT from STARGATE: UNIVERSE. I heard he is 26 and stuck here just like everyone else. Even in the 20’s, he still gives off a TRYING TO BE THE PERFECT SOLDIER BUT EMOTIONS GETTING IN THE WAY, FLIRTING TOO MUCH FOR HIS OWN GOOD, CHEERING OVER ALL THE OTHER PARENTS AT THE LITTLE LEAGUE SOCCER GAME, DOING EVERYTHING HE CAN FOR THOSE HE LOVES, WALLET STUFFED FULL OF PICTURES OF HIS KID AND PROUDLY SHOWN TO ANYONE WILL PAY ATTENTION impression. But here, they are working as SOLDIER. They’re known to be quite CARING & DETERMINED, but have a tendency to be OVERPROTECTIVE & EMOTIONAL on their bad days.
Gender/Pronouns ::
Cis Man ; he/him
How long have they been in Sydney?
Twenty-Four Years
Which suburb do they live in?
Tbd
Personality description :
Strangers :: Matt tries his best to be friendly, and it's definitely easier when he's not working. If someone catches Matt in work mode, he can seem a little intense, but most of the time he is very friendly or at the very least, polite. Although, he can come across as a little distracted as he's currently working as many hours as he can fit in a week while raising his nine year old son on his own. But there's also the problem that Matt is a flirt and a manwhore, so he might alway be flirty and seductive if he's alone because his son is at a friend's house.
Friends :: Friends get the privilege of seeing Matt's goofier side. They get to see that he isn't always as serious as he can come across, especially at work. But also how hard he works to be the best father, soldier, and person he can be. He goes out of his way to help those he cares about even when he's exhausted.
Family/Close Friends :: Matt's closest friends get to see the side of himself he hides from most other people. they get to see how emotional he is and how deeply he takes everything. not only do they see how hard he works, they see that it's not always healthy and that it has more to do with being perfect than trying his best. he would do *anything* for the people he loves.
Memories of their real life :
Matt was adopted by a priest after his parents were killed in a car crash when he was 4. When he was 16, he accidentally got a girl pregnant that he barely, she didn't tell him that she was keeping the baby, and he never saw her again. The same year, the priest who had adopted him died of liver failure due to alcoholism. Matt had planned to be a priest, but after everything that had happened, he ended up going to college and joining the Air Force as an officer. After joining the Air Force, he became a member of the Stargate program. Because of this, he was stranded on an ancient space ship, the Destiny along with a group of other survivors after their base was attacked.
If you want to read more, you can check out his wiki page here!
What was their fake life like?
Matt was put into foster care after losing his parents and bounced around foster homes for awhile, including a brief period of time with Jack O'Neill. While he was with his last foster dad, he ended up knocking a girl up at 16 just like he had in his real life, but this time she stuck around. Matthew was born when Matt was 17 and as scared as he was, he couldn't have been more excited. Knowing he had a family to provide for, he joined the Air Force at 18.
Coming home after training, Matt had plans to propose and make them a proper family. However, when he showed up at his dad's house, Matthew's mom had left, leaving Matthew with his dad and not so much as a goodbye or an explanation other than 'it was all too much and she was too young to be stuck with a baby'. Ever since then, Matt has been a single father, working his hardest to give Matthew the life he deserves. Matthew is nine years old now, and Matt couldn't be prouder of him.

Since hip hop is 50 years old I think it’s important to learn about the “firsts” in history of the genre
60 Hip-Hop ‘Firsts': Rap’s Must-Know Milestones
Dave LiftonPublished: August 10, 2018
Play DJ Kool Herc
on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad)
Aug. 11, 1973 is widely considered to be the day that hip-hop was born, when DJ Kool Herc brought out his "merry-go-round" style of record-spinning during a party at 1520 Sedgewick Ave., in the Bronx, N.Y. Since then, hip-hop has grown, both as an art form and in popularity. We've compiled the must "must-know" milestone moments in its history, from before the first single was released up to the present day, in our list of 60 Hip-Hop Firsts.
1. First Female Rapper: MC Sha-Rock of Funky 4 + 1 (1976)
Hip hop is a predominantly male genre but that doesn’t mean female rappers aren’t just as good if not better than their male counterparts. There’s plenty of female rappers who are worth discussing but let’s talk about the first.
As crews came together around the new sound, the Funky 4+1 stood out, largely because of the "plus one": Sharon Green, aka MC Sha-Rock, the first female MC. Even before they put out their first record, 1979's "Rappin & Rocking the House," she established herself by going toe-to-toe in battle raps with male counterparts such as Grandmaster Flash.
2. First Single: Fatback, '“King Tim III (Personality Jock)" (1979)
While the origins of rap can be traced back to the spoken-word-over-music recordings by the Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron, the first commercially available single rooted in DJ Kool Herc's creation was “King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by Fatback, a funk/disco group that had been around since 1972. "King Tim" refers to Tim Washington, who provided the vocals. Originally released as the b-side of "You're My Candy Sweet" on March 25, 1979, DJs opted for the flip side and the track reached No. 26 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart. The line "A little left hand, right hand in the air / And you sway 'em like you just don't care" is believed to be the first recorded instance of what would soon become "Throw your hands in the air / And wave 'em like you just don't care."
3. First Rap Song to Chart on the Hot 100: The Sugarhill Gang, "Rappers Delight" (1979)
before there was Wu-Tang, OutKast, run-dmc, etc there was the sugar hill gang
'“King Tim III (Personality Jock)" may have been the first commercially available rap single, but not by long. Only a few months later, on Aug. 2, 1979, the Sugarhill Gang released "Rapper's Delight." And possibly because it outperformed Fatback, peaking just inside the Top 40 at No. 36, it became widely accepted, erroneously, that "Rapper's Delight" was the first rap single.
4. First Hip-Hop Radio Show: Mr. Magic's Disco Showcase (1979)
John "Mr. Magic" Rivas, a member of the Juice Crew from the Queensbridge housing project in Queens, N.Y., began spinning hip-hop records during his Disco Showcase on WHBI 105.9 FM. The two-hour program began at 2AMand Rivas paid $75 an hour for the airtime. Three years later, he moved to WBLS, a much bigger station, and rebranded the show as Rap Attack. Marley Marl served as his DJ and sidekick until Rivas left the station in 1989. Whodini paid tribute to him with "Magic's Wand"
What radio station do you think is representing hip hop?
5. First Single by a Female Group: The Sequence, "Funk You Up" (1979)
Twenty years before her breakthrough as a solo artist, Angie Stone, then calling herself "Angie B," was a member of Columbia, S.C.'s the Sequence with Cheryl "The Pearl" Cook and Gwendolyn "Blondy" Chisolm. After getting backstage at a Sugarhill Gang concert and proving themselves to Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson, they got signed and recorded "Funk You Up," the second single ever on the label. It peaked at No. 15 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart and they released nine more singles -- two of which charted -- and three albums for the label. In 2017, they sued Bruno Marsand Mark Ronson on the grounds that "Uptown Funk" was too similar to their biggest hit.
6. First Rap Video: "Rapper's Delight" (1979)
what’s your favorite hip hop music video?
The Sugarhill Gang made good use of their 1979 appearance on the syndicated New Jersey-based Soap Factory Disco Show, turning the surprisingly high-quality production into rap's first video. Multiple sources state that Whodini's "Magic's Wand"was the first officially commissioned video, but the clip currently can't be found on the internet.
7. First Rapper to Sign With a Major Label: Kurtis Blow (1979)
Even though so many major labels had offices in New York, it was a British company that became the first to sign a rapper, Kurtis Blow. As he told All Hip-Hop, he cut a record called "Christmas Rappin'," which producers J.B. Moore and Robert Ford unsuccessfully shopped around to 22 labels before John Stains of Mercury made a deal.
8. First Album: The Sugarhill Gang, The Sugarhill Gang (1980)
Hip-hop took its first tentative steps into the album format in 1980. The Sugarhill Gang’s self-titled effort from February of that year is widely considered to be the first full-length rap album. However, Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson reportedly didn’t think people were ready to buy an entire long-player featuring nothing but rap music. So alongside a handful of songs in the style of “Rapper’s Delight” you’ll also find a full side's worth of R&B ballads and instrumental disco tracks.
Kurtis Blow's September 1980 eponymous album is credited as the first to be released by a major label. The Sequence also released their debut full-length effort that year, and multi-artist compilations such as the The Great Rap Hits and Rap… Rap… Rap… began to appear on record shelves around this time.
9. First Gold Single: Kurtis Blow, "The Breaks" (1980)
One of the conditions of Blow's deal allowed him to record a second if "Christmas Rappin'" sold 30,000 copies. It sold 373,000, which led to his self-titled debut and the follow-up single, "The Breaks." Once again, Blow defied expectations, reaching No. 4 on the R&B chart and selling 940,000 copies to become the first rap single to be certified gold.
10. First to Appear on National Television: Kurtis Blow, Soul Train(Sept. 27, 1980)
The ultimate tastemaker for black America, Soul Train, took note of hip-hop's growing popularity when they brought Blow on for "The Breaks" during their Sept. 27, 1980 episode. Also appearing on the show were L.T.D. and Seventh Wonder.
11. First Beef: Kool Moe Dee vs. Busy Bee (1981)
the bridge wars. Roxanne wars. East coast vs west coast. Jay z vs nas . Ice cube vs Nwa. Nothing is more exciting than a good old fashioned hip hop rivalry.
Given that boasting and trading insults has long been a part of African American music -- see Otis Reddingand Carla Thomas' "Tramp" for a perfect example -- it's all-but impossible to pinpoint the start of battle rapping. The earliest we could find was Kool Moo Dee's slaying of Busy Bee at a contest at Harlem World in 1981.
12. First Rappers on Saturday Night Live: Funky 4+1 (Feb. 14, 1981)
Deborah Harry of Blondie served as both the host and musical guest on the Valentine's Day 1981 episode of Saturday Night Live. In addition to singing covers of Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" and Devo's "Come Back Jonee," she also brought along the Funky 4+1 to perform "That's the Joint." As Blondie guitarist, and Harry's then-boyfriend Chris Stein told WaxPoetics, "[T]hey let us pick a musical guest to be on with us," he said. "The people on the show were so nervous about them doing it. I remember trying to explain to them how scratching worked. Trying to verbalize what that is for someone who has no idea, it’s really difficult.” Instead, the group wound up rapping to a backing tape. You can see their performance at the 11-minute mark of the video above, right after Harry introduces them as "among the best street rappers in the country" and "her friends from the Bronx."
13. First No. 1 Hot 100 Song With a Rap, Blondie, "Rapture" (March 28, 1981)
Pop music and rap are nothing new in this genre
Six weeks after Saturday Night Live, Blondie's "Rapture" began its two-week stint at No. 1. The track concluded with a rap by Harry that gave a shout-out to both Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash. Harry had been hip to them since 1977. "She said, 'I'm going to write a rap about you on my next record.' And I was like, 'Yeah, right," Flash told the Daily News. "And about five or six months later, 'Eatin' cars and . . . eat up bars . . . and Flash is fast, Flash is cool.' She kept her word. ... "I was introduced. So now ...white people and people of other colors were, 'Who is Flash?' So she tremendously opened the door."
14. First National News Story About Hip-Hop: 20/20 (July 1981)
Eight years after DJ Kool Herc's party, ABC's 20/20 news magazine show devoted a segment to the "overnight phenomenon" of rap by Steve Fox. He credited "Rapture" for bringing it to the masses and also pointed out its deep roots in African American traditions. Fox concluded by predicting that rap would become a cultural force because "it lets ordinary people express ideas they care about, in language they can relate to, put to music they can dance to. Not everyone can sing, but everyone can rap." "That's marvelous," host Hugh Downs said.
15. First International Tour: New York City Rap Tour (November 1982)
Before hip-hop had ventured out into America, it had gone global. Bernard Zekri, a French journalist who was living in New York, had fallen in love with rap and decided to take it to his native country. In November 1982, thanks to Roxy founder Kool Lady Blue, the New York City Rap Tour brought the nascent culture to France and London, with performances by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, Fab 5 Freddy, Grandmaster D.ST and the Infinity Rappers, Futura 2000, Dondi, Rammellzee, the breakdancing Rock Steady Crew, and the World Champion Fantastic Four Double Dutch Girls. "They had this whole show," David Hershkovits, who covered it for the Daily News, recalled in Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation. "It wasn't just a band, it was the graffiti and the breakdancers and the DJs and the whole experience."
16. First Hip-Hop Movie: Wild Style(1983)
Written, directed and produced by Charlie Ahearn, 1983's Wild Style told the story of a graffiti artist (real-life artist Lee Quinones) and features Grandmaster Flash, Fab 5 Freddy, Busy Bee and others. As a part of New York's downtown art scene, Ahearn had been observing the intersection of graffiti and rap cultures for a few years and decided to chronicle it.
"I was interested in making a pop movie," he told Red Bull Music Academy. "I knew that I should be documenting this thing, but I hated the idea of making a documentary. So the question is how can I make a pop movie out of this thing? To me, the Bruce Lee movies were the thing that I was most excited by. You go to 42nd Street, you go to see kung fu movies. I wanted something that could be on that level, something that could show on 42nd Street. My idea was to do what excited me most. There was no historical perspective. Let’s go on this trip, it’s like a cartoon version of what was happening."

17. First Rap Group Signed to a Major Label: The Fearless Four (1983)
After a pair of successful singles on Enjoy, including "Rockin' It," Harlem's Fearless Four jumped to Elektra. They released two singles for the label, "Just Rock" and "Problems of the World," the latter of which was produced by Kurtis Blow.
18. First Hip-Hop Radio Station: KDAY 93.5 FM, Los Angeles (1983)
At a time when rap was still considered a fad, Greg Mack was hired to be the music director at KDAY 1580-AM in Los Angeles. He convinced his bosses to allow him to add rap to the station's playlists, first in the evening and, when the ratings jumped, in the afternoon during his "Mack Attack" show. The station would soon go all hip-hop and Mack's program became the place for those on the rising West Coast scene to be heard.
19. First Hollywood Movie With Breakdancing: Flashdance (1983)
A year before Beat Street and Breakin', filmgoers got to see breakdancing on the big screen via a scene in Flashdance. Irene Cara, who sang the movie's No. 1 theme song, included a song called "Breakdance" on her album What a Feelin'. It reached No. 8 and was her last Top 10 hit.
20. First Music Video Show Dedicated to Hip-Hop: Video Music Box (April 1984)
Before MTV decided to start broadcasting rap videos, Ralph McDaniels, an engineer at WNYC-TV, and Lionel Martin created Video Music Box. With Whodini's "Five Minutes of Funk" as its theme, it became the place to see hip-hop in TV in New York, and Jay-Z and Nas watched it regularly. The show is still running, although it moved to WNYE-TV in 1996. "I knew this was a passion but I didn't see that it would go this long," McDaniels said.
21. First Gold Album: Run-D.M.C., Run-D.M.C. (Released March 27, 1984)
On the strengths of the singles "It's Like That," "Hard Times" and "Rock Box," Run-D.M.C.'s self-titled debut was the first hip-hop record to sell 500,000 copies. In his original Village Voice review, Robert Christgau, the self-proclaimed "Dean of American Rock Critics" gave it a grade of A-. "It's easily the canniest and most formally sustained rap album ever," he wrote, "a tour de force I trust will be studied by all manner of creative downtowners and racially enlightened Englishmen. While their heavy staccato and proud disdain for melody may prove too avant-garde for some, the style has been in the New York air long enough that you may understand it better than you think. Do you have zero tolerance for namby-pamby bullshit? Do you believe in yourself above all? Then chances are you share Run-D.M.C.'s values."
22. First Hip-Hop Video Played on MTV: Run-D.M.C., "Rock Box" (1984)
Although "Rapture" was shown twice on the day that MTV launched, Aug. 1, 1981, it took them a few years to work rap videos by black acts into their rotation. That changed with Run-D.M.C.'s video for "Rock Box." But it would still take them four years to devote an entire show to hip-hop, when Yo! MTV Raps debuted in August 1988.
23. First U.S. Tour: 1984 Swatch Watch New York City Fresh Fest Tour (September 1984)
Hip-hop first ventured out on the road thanks to the 1984 Swatch Watch New York City Fresh Festival. Headlined by Run-D.M.C., the tour also starred Whodini, the Fat Boys, Newcleus, the Dynamic Breakers, Magnificent Force, Uptown Express, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, T. La Rock, with Kurtis Blow as host. According to Murray Forman's The 'Hood Comes First: Race, Space, and Place in Rap and Hip-Hop, it played 27 cities, beginning Labor Day Weekend in Greensboro, N.C., and took in $3.5 million, with five percent of proceeds going to the United Negro College Fund.
24. First Diss Track: Roxanne Shante, "Roxanne's Revenge" (1984)
In 1984, U.T.F.O. put out a track called "Roxanne, Roxanne," a rap about a girl who had rejected all the members of the crew. Shortly thereafter, a teenager called Lolita Shante Gooden was asked by Mr. Magic and Marley Marl to put a new rap over their beats. She assumed the identity of U.T.F.O.'s ire and rebranded herself as Roxanne Shante, slamming them in "Roxanne's Revenge." That began the famous "Roxanne Wars," with U.T.F.O. responding by finding their own woman who called herself "The Real Roxanne." Over the next year, dozens of people portraying members of her family, doctor and even someone who claimed that Roxanne was a man, recorded answer songs.
25. First Rap Album to Be Released on CD: Run-D.M.C., King of Rock (Jan. 21, 1985)
Two and a half years after compact discs first became commercially available in stores, hip-hop went digital. Possibly because of the unprecedented success of the first album, Profile was able to press King of Rock on CD. The record slightly improved on the chart successes of its predecessor, peaking at No. 52 on the 200 Albums chart and at No. 12 at R&B, where Run-D.M.C. had reached Nos. 53 and 14, respectively.
26. First High-Profile Hip-Hop Couple: Salt and Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor (1985)
Cheryl "Salt" James met Sandra "Pepa" Denton when they were students at Queensborough Community College and started calling themselves Super Nature. James' boyfriend, Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor, asked them to record a song he wrote for a project at the Center of Media Arts, an answer to Doug E. Fresh's "The Show." The single, "The Show Stoppa (Is Stupid Fresh)," became a hit and they changed their name to Salt-n-Pepa. Azor would write and produce the bulk of Salt-n-Pepa's material over the next decade.
27. First Platinum Album: Run-DMC, Raising Hell (Released May 15, 1986)
If King of Rock defied those who thought rap wouldn't last, Raising Hellserved as the proof of its staying power. It not only reached No. 3 and topped the R&B chart, it became the first to sell one million copies, with its platinum certification coming on July 15, 1986. Within a year, it would sell three million and new fans went back and bought King of Rock, which went platinum on Feb. 18, 1987.
28. First Hip-Hop / Rock Crossover: Run-D.M.C. & Aerosmith, "Walk This Way" (1986)
Rap and rock and roll may seem different from at first glance but they can’t be more similar . There’s plenty of examples of artists that blend these styles together well, artists like rage against the machine, korn, linkin park and limp bizkit come to mind. However the very first one to do it was run dmc. Raising Hell's success was bolstered by a bonafide pop smash. Run-D.M.C. had used the opening of Aerosmith's 1975 hit "Walk This Way" as break, but didn't know the whole song until producer Rick Rubin played it for them and suggested they cut their own version.
"I went through my whole album collection looking for a song that Run-D.M.C. could do that would point out the relationship between hip-hop and other kinds of music," Rubin said. "'Walk This Way' had a familiar rock sensibility to it, but at the same time, with very little change, would function as a hip-hop song."
Rubin brought in Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, who had only recently reunited, to be on the song and the video, which saw Tyler, quite symbolically, breaking a hole in the wall that separated hip-hop and rock.
29. First No.1 Album: Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill (Released Nov. 15, 1986)
Rubin took the hard-rock-meets-hip-hop approach even further with one of his signings to Def Jam, an all-white trio from New York that had switched from hardcore punk to rap, the Beastie Boys. Packed with Led Zeppelin and AC/DC samples, and even an appearance from Slayer guitarist Kerry King, Licensed to Ill was loud, brash and snotty, and it did the trick. On March 7, 1987, it topped Billboard's 200 Albums chart and stayed there for seven weeks.
30. First Rappers on the Cover of Rolling Stone: Run-D.M.C. (Dec. 4, 1986)
With a story called "Run-D.M.C. Is Beating the Rap," Rolling Stone finally put a hip-hop act on its cover. The piece, by Ed Kiersh, portrayed them as thoughtful, middle-class young men from Hollis, Queens who were adjusting to their fame and took their status as role models seriously. But they also had to defend themselves against the idea that their music promotes violence, following a series of incidents during their tour, including a fight between the Bloods and the Crips at the Long Beach Arena that summer.
31. First Gold and Platinum Album by Women: Salt-n-Pepa, Hot, Cool & Vicious (Released Dec. 8, 1986)
Despite the groundbreaking work by MC Sha-Rock, the Sequence and Roxanne Shante, women rappers didn't achieve mainstream success until Salt-n-Pepa's debut, Hot, Cool & Vicious. Featuring the Top 20 hit "Push It," it became not only the first rap album by a female act to go gold, but also platinum.
32. First Rappers on the Cover of Spin: Beastie Boys (March 1987)
Although Spin had marketed itself as more hip-hop friendly than the rock-focused Rolling Stone, they still took three months longer than its rival to put rappers on their cover. Scott Cohen's "Crude Stories: Meet the Beastie Boys" was a portrait of the "rudest, loudest, deffest, most obnoxious rappers in the world" that was the opposite of Rolling Stone's piece on Run-D.M.C. As recounted in Dan Charnas' The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, Henry Allen, a friend of Chuck D, wrote a letter to the editor taking the magazine to task for putting a white hip-hop group on the cover.
33. First Rap LP to Receive an Explicit Lyrics Warning Sticker: Ice-T, Rhyme Pays (July 28, 1987)
In 1990, the Recording Industry Association of America, after years of pressure from the Parents Music Resource Center, began rolling out the "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" sticker on albums with content that may be unsuitable for youngsters. Perhaps fittingly, Banned in the U.S.A.by 2 Live Crew, who were in the midst of their obscenity trial over As Nasty as They Wanna Be, was the first record to be affixed with the now-familiar black-and-white sticker. But three years prior, Ice-T warned potential listeners of explicit content on the cover of his debut, Rhyme Pays.
34. First Double Album: DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper (March 29, 1988)
The breakthrough record by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince contained 85 minutes of music, forcing it to be put on two vinyl records. In order to make it fit onto a 72-minute CD, seven songs -- "Nightmare on My Street", "As We Go", "D.J. on the Wheels," "He's the D.J., I'm the Rapper," "Hip Hop Dancer's Theme," "Jazzy's in the House" and "Human Video Game" -- were edited and "Another Special Announcement" was removed entirely.
35. First Album by a Solo Female Rapper: MC Lyte, Lyte as a Rock (Sept. 13, 1988)
It took nearly two years after Salt-n-Pepa struck platinum for a female rapper to release a solo album. But MC Lyte made up for lost time with the heralded Lyte as a Rock. Featuring the No. 1 Rap Single "Paper Thin," the record launched her career, which has seen her branch out into acting, artist management and philanthropy.
36. First Platinum Single: Tone-Loc, "Wild Thing" (Oct. 15, 1988)
Once again, rock and hip-hop combined to make history. Tone-Loc's No. 2 smash "Wild Thing" had the requisite hard rock sample (Van Halen's "Jaime's Cryin'") and a video that put its own spin on Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" clip to cross over into the mainstream in then-record numbers for a rap single. It was certified platinum and double platinum on Feb. 3, 1989.
37. First Grammy for Best Rap Performance: DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, "Parents Just Don't Understand" (Feb. 22, 1989)
The grammys have a love hate relationship with hip hop and it’s fans. On one hand the awards do right by its fans like this year’s award hip hop tribute which they brought out legendary rappers and groups all with in the course of 15 minutes but most of the time they don’t. Don’t even get me started on the one time Macklemore and Ryan Lewis winning best hip hop album over kanye, Drake, jay z and Kendrick lol
A decade after "Rapper's Delight," the Grammys could no longer ignore hip-hop's role in American culture. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's "Parents Just Don't Understand" was perhaps an obvious choice for the first award, in a field that contained J. J. Fad("Supersonic"), Kool Moe Dee ("Wild Wild West"), LL Cool J ("Going Back to Cali") and Salt-n-Pepa ("Push It"). Although even then it caused controversy when the RIAA announced that the presentation of the award would not be televised. In response, Russell Simmons and Lyor Cohen of Def Jam organized a boycott, with Public Enemy and Slick Rickamong those who took part.
38. First Song to Top the Hot Rap Songs Chart: Stop the Violence Movement, "Self-Destruction" (March 11, 1989)
A month after the Grammys, Billboarddebuted its own chart to list the most popular hip-hop songs in the country. Its inaugural No. 1 was "Self-Destruction" by the Stop the Violence Movement. After the 1987 killing of his Boogie Down Productions partner Scott La Rock, KRS-One brought together some of his fellow East Coast rappers -- including Public Enemy, Heavy D, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh and Kool Moe Dee -- to denounce violence. Proceeds were donated to the National Urban League. The song remained atop the chart for five weeks. Sadly this song is still relevant because of many rappers who have since been shot and/or killed since.
39. First to Get in Trouble With the FBI for Their Lyrics: N.W.A. (Aug. 1, 1989)
Fun fact: this week marks 35 years since the album straight Outta Compton was released
A year after the release of N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton, Priority Records received a letter from Milt Ahlerich, the assistant director for the Office of Public Affairs at the FBI on official stationery. Without specifically naming "Fuck tha Police," he claimed one of their songs "encourages violence against and disrespect for the law enforcement officer" and told them that 152 officers had been killed in the line of duty in the past two years. Speaking to The Washington Post, Ahlerich denied that he was trying to put governmental pressure on the band or its label, but rather address concerns within Bureau over violence directed at police officers. Barry Lynn of the American Civil Liberties Union called the letter "intimidating. ... It's designed to get Priority to change its practices, policies and distribution for this record, and that's the kind of censorship by intimidation that the First Amendment doesn't permit."
40. First Diamond Album: MC Hammer, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em (Feb. 12, 1990)
The statistics on MC Hammer's third disc, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em, are astounding, especially given how hip-hop was still widely considered a novelty only a few years earlier. It spent 21 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and 28 weeks at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. On April 15, 1991, only 14 months after its release, it was certified diamond platinum for sales in excess of 10 million copies.
Admit you have listened to this song you can’t touch this more than you can admit
41. First Rapper to Be Nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy: Tone-Loc (Feb. 21, 1990)
Tone-Loc's success earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and two other acts with hip-hop leanings, Neneh Cherry and Soul II Soul, were also recognized, as was the folk duo Indigo Girls. But the winners were Milli Vanilli, whose award was rescinded nine months later when group mastermind Frank Farian was forced to admit that Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, who represented them in the videos and onstage, did not sing on their album.
42. First Rapper on the Cover of Major U.S. News Magazine: Tone-Loc (March 19, 1990)
As hip-hop was dominating the charts, one of mainstream America's two most widely read news magazines took notice. Newsweek's cover boasted "Rap Rage" in big letters, followed by "Yo! Street rhyme has gone big time. But are those sounds out of bounds?" But who did they choose to represent the anger? Tone-Loc, hardly the most controversial or threatening rapper on the scene. Reportedly Newsweek were debating between Tone-Loc and LL Cool J for the cover.
43. First Full Rap Song to Top the Hot 100: Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" (Nov. 3, 1990)
In the midst of what became known as the "golden age" of hip-hop, rap finally got a song to top Billboard's Hot 100. But it wasn't one of the defining tracks by critical favorites like Public Enemy, the Native Tongues groups or the up-and-coming West Coast gangstas. Instead, it was "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice, the much-derided, Queen-sampling Dallas rapper whose label had created a fake bio in order to boost his street cred.
44. First Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance: MC Hammer, "U Can't Touch This" (Feb. 20, 1991)
Two years after debuting a category for rap (Young MC's "Bust a Move" won in 1990), the Grammys added a second to distinguish between solo acts and groups (although not between albums and songs). They went with MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This," which beat out Queen Latifah's All Hail the Queen album, Big Daddy Kane's "I Get The Job Done," Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" and Monie Love's "Monie In The Middle."
45. First Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group: Quincy Jones, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel & Quincy Jones III, "Back on the Block" (Feb. 20, 1991)
For the second award dedicated to hip-hop that night, voters gave the Grammy to longtime favorite Quincy Jones for his star-studded "Back on the Block" over Digital Underground ("The Humpty Dance"), DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (the And in This Corner... album), Public Enemy (Fear of a Black Planet) and the West Coast Rap All-Stars ("We're All in the Same Gang").
46. First Rapper to Meet a President: Eazy-E: (March 18, 1991)
Even as the culture wars over rap lyrics continued, Eazy-E and N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller were invited to lunch with President George H.W. Bush and the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle by Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole. According to Heller in his book Ruthless, the invitation came as a result of a donation Eazy-E made to a South Central charity and the meal consisted of poached salmon and roast beef -- and that Eazy-E was stoned. But the rapper denied that he was a Republican, or even political. "How the fuck can I be a Republican when I got a song called 'Fuck tha Police?'" he said. "I ain't shit—ain't a Republican or Democrat. I didn't even vote. My vote ain't going to help! I don't give a fuck who's the president."
47. First Rapper to Launch a Clothing Line: Christopher "Play" Martin (1991)
With his star on the rise thanks a pair of gold records and the hit House Partymovies, Christopher "Play" Martin of Kid 'n Play opened up a boutique featuring his own designs called IV Plai, taking over an old game room in his hometown of East Elmhurst, Queens, N.Y. "I love fashion," he told The New York Times. "And I knew I would give back to the neighborhood when I could. ... There is this fear in the entertainment business that you'll end up going back to your old job at Burger King. I'm going to make sure that never happens."
48. First Rappers to Win a Grammy in a Non-Rap Category: Arrested Development (Feb. 24, 1993)
Prior to 1993, rappers had only won Grammys in their designated categories. That changed when Arrested Development beat out Billy Ray Cyrus, Sophie B. Hawkins, Kris Kross and Jon Secada for Best New Artist thanks to their album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... The record was one of the most popular socially conscious hip-hop records of its day.
49. First Platinum Album by a Solo Female: Da Brat, Funkdafied (June 28, 1994)
Funkdafied introduced the world to Shawntae Harris, aka Da Brat, who was all of 20 when it was released. It topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went platinum on Jan. 6, 1995. She'd break the million mark again with 2000's Unrestricted.
50. First Hip-Hop Video Game: Rap Jam: Volume One (January 1995)
Released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, Rap Jam: Volume One featured such popular rappers as Coolio, House of Pain, Queen Latifah, Warren G and Onyxplaying one-on-one on the streets of five cities. Each rapper had their own special move, and no fouls were called. A second volume was never produced.
51. First Rap Double Album to be Released on CD: Various Artists, Down South Hustlers: Bouncin' and Swingin' (Oct 31, 1995)
As discussed above, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper was edited to fit on a single CD, but no such changes were made to Master P's No Limit two-disc compilation, which featured "Playaz from the South," his hit with UGK and Silkk the Shocker. A few months later, on Feb. 13, 1996, 2Pac dropped his own double album, All Eyez on Me.
52. First Artist to Have Two No. 1 Albums in One Year: 2Pac, All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (1996)
As if All Eyez on Me being a double album didn't prove how creative 2Pac was at the end of his life, nine months later he posthumously put out The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which was credited to Makaveli. Its title referred to how much time he spent working on it -- three days to record his vocals and another four to mix it -- during the first week of August 1996, only a month before he was fatally shot on Sept. 7, 1996. Both albums went to No. 1
Two years later, DMX also hit the top spot twice in one year when he put out Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Bloodonly seven months after It’s Dark and Hell is Hot. He did it because Island Def Jam boss Lyor Cohen offered him $1 million if he did.
“I wanted to get that bonus,” DMX later told the Fader. ‘So I wasn’t playing with that show studio shit.” Indeed, he and his production crew took over numerous New York City recording studios at once, and also recorded in Miami and Los Angeles. “I used to sleep at Powerhouse,” remembered producer Dame Grease. “I’d be in there eating turkey sandwiches, Chinese and sleeping on the boards. Just cranking, cranking, cranking around the clock. The energy was crazy.”
53. First Best Rap Album Grammy: Naughty by Nature, Poverty's Paradise(Feb. 28, 1996)
For five years, Grammy nominations given out to solo and group rappers could be for one song or a whole album. That changed in 1996 with the debut of the Best Rap Album category. That night, Naughty by Nature claimed the award, beating out 2Pac (Me Against the World), Bone Thugs-n-Harmony (E. 1999 Eternal), Ol' Dirty Bastard (Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version) and Skee-Lo (I Wish).
54. First Rap Album to Win Album of the Year Grammy: Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1999)
The 1999 Grammy Album of the Year category was noteworthy from the start, as all five nominees were made by female artists or female-fronted bands. When Lauryn Hill’s solo debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was named the first hip-hop album to win this honor, it became historic. Co-presenter Whitney Houston made sure everybody in the audience understood and acknowledged just how important the moment was, but Hill was and remains determined to stay focused on self-improvement. To that end, she says she gives all her trophies to her mother.
“If I walked downstairs every day, and I saw all of my achievements,” she told Manufacturing Intellect in 2000, ”it would be so easy to become complacent. ‘Ive got all of these, and look at those, I don’t need to do anything else.’ But life is continued work, it’s constant learning… I get really afraid of those little comforts, those things that make us feel like we did something great. Because I’ve done nothing, and I mean that sincerely.”
55. First Oscar for Best Original Song: Eminem, "Lose Yourself" from 8 Miile (March 23, 2003)
Starring in the semi-autobiographical 8 Mile gave Eminem the opportunity to finish "Lose Yourself," a track he had demoed a few years earlier. “I had to make ["Lose Yourself" and "8 Mile"] while I was in the movie,” he toldFunkmaster Flex. “Because once I stepped out of that movie ... I wouldn’t feel like I was in [the character.]” But despite its massive success -- it spent nearly three months at No. 1 -- Eminem didn't even bother attending the Academy Awards. "I was sleeping that night," he continued. "I just felt like I had no chance of winning. ... At that point in my life, I always felt like rap never got its fair shake on anything."
Since then, two other hip-hop songs have won the Oscar for Best Original Song: "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" by Three 6 Mafia (Hustle & Flow) and "Glory" by John Legend and Common(Selma).
56. First to Reach 1 Million Downloads: Outkast, "Hey Ya" (2004)
The popularity of OutKast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below coincided neatly with the rise of Apple's iTunes music store. Their smash "Hey Ya" became the first song, in any genre, to be legally downloaded 1 million times from iTunes and other sites. The record's popularity -- it sold 10 million copies -- led Andre 3000 to focus less on music, preferring instead to follow other pursuits, like fashion and acting. "Now it’s more like a hobby for me, so I don’t think about it in that way," he said in 2017. "Even with Outkast — if we never do another album, I’m totally fine with that. When I was 25, I said I don’t want to be a 30-year-old rapper. I’m 42 now, and I feel more and more that way. Do I really want to be 50 years old up there doing that? When I watch other rappers that are my age I commend them, but I just wonder where the inspiration is coming from. At this stage I’m really more focused on what I am going to be doing 10 years from now. And I hope to God it won’t be rapping.”
57. First Rappers Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (March 12, 2007)
Three years after the earliest hip-hop recording acts had become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five were inducted. The news from the T.V. woke Melle Mel out of his sleep, but Grandmaster Flash didn't believe it. "There had been two false alarms on it," Flash told Reuters, "so when somebody called my house, I didn’t take it too serious, to be honest. But when they told me, I just looked at the phone, hung up and went on my merry way. The next morning I started getting a lot of calls, so I just said, 'Note to self: This is it.' But it’s wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Later than sooner still beats never!"
They were inducted by Jay-Z, who surprised the crew with his appearance. Since then, five other hip-hop acts have been enshrined: Run-D.M.C., the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, N.W.A. and Tupac Shakur. While there will always be a segment of society that doesn't believe hip-hop belongs in the Hall of Fame, Flash sees his induction as validation that his music is all part of the same lineage.
“When you go back into the ‘70s, into the ingredient years of hip-hop, I played rock,” he told Yahoo. “I actually produced tracks that sounded like rock, from rock samples; we were into the rock sound. My instrument is the turntable, and so, I was able to walk into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with my turntables. All I know is I’m in company with some of the greatest musicians of all time — some of the greatest guitar players, greatest drummers, greatest ax players, greatest keyboardists, greatest singers. It’s incredible.”
Since then 11 rap artists and groups have been inducted including run dmc, Tupac, biggie smalls, jay z, public enemy, beastie boys, nwa and now missy Elliott the first female rapper to be inducted
58. First Woman to Rap at the White House: MC Lyte (2015)
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legislation that created the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, President and Mrs. Obama threw A Celebration of American Creativity. The evening, broadcast on PBS, included MC Lyte, Usher, Smokey Robinson, blues legend Buddy Guy, Trombone Shortyand Broadway stars Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Introduced by Queen Latifah, who called her "my mentor, my inspiration, my all in all, the 'Godmother of Hip Hop,'" MC Lyte performed her then-recent "Dear John" and her 1989 classic "Cha Cha Cha."
59. First to Win a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award: Run-D.M.C. (2016)
Despite having never won a Grammy for any of their hit songs or albums (Raising Hell was nominated in 1986 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal), the RIAA recognized Run-D.M.C. with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Darryl McDaniels admitted to Rolling Stonethat he was conflicted with the idea.
"I guess it’s cool," he said, "’cause — and I’m talking from my egotistical rap microphone stage right now — they shoulda gave it to me in ’86 when even Michael Jackson said there was nothing in the world more popular, not even him."
But at the same time, he felt those who came before him deserved it more: "[D]on’t acknowledge Run-D.M.C. until [you] give that award to Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation for 'Planet Rock.' Give that award first to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and it’s a damn shame that nobody in hip-hop knows that, you know what I’m saying?"
Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane, Linda Ronstadt were the other recipients that year.
60. First Pulitzer Prize for Music: Kendrick Lamar, DAMN (2018)
Kendrick Lamar's DAMN wasn't just the first hip-hop album to win the Pulitzer. It was the first recording in any genre that wasn't classical or jazz to earn the prestigious award in its 75-year history. The Pulitzer board calledthe album “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
Although Lamar publicly didn't say anything more than “It’s an honor … I’ve been writing my whole life, so to get this type of recognition – it’s beautiful" on the night he accepted the award, he later said that it was "one of those things that should have happened with hip-hop a long time ago."
"It took a long time for people to embrace us—people outside of our community, our culture—to see this not just as vocal lyrics," he told Vanity Fair, "but to see that this is really pain, this is really hurt, this is really true stories of our lives on wax. And now, for it to get the recognition that it deserves as a true art form, that’s not only great for myself, but it makes me feel good about hip-hop in general. Writers like Tupac, Jay-Z, Rakim, Eminem, Q-Tip, Big Daddy Kane, Snoop [Dogg] . . . It lets me know that people are actually listening further than I expected."
