Everything to Know About ACFTL ☺️💕📚

Hello, everyone!

With A Curse For True Love coming out next week, I thought maybe creating a compile list of what everything we will be expecting might be helpful to those who want a refresher.

However, if you don't want to be reminded of any of the details that have been shared and want to go in blind, that's cool, too!

All of the information that I have gathered has been from all of the IG AMA's stories, comments, replies, and some from podcasts.

Slight spoilers. Quick refresher below.

Stephanie hasn’t been nice writing this book, but let’s see if the torture is well worth it in the end.

There are three POVs: Evangeline, Jacks, and Apollo

The answer to why Jacks eat apples is in the book, but according to B&N site, we might get the answer to everything about him!

Q: is there a scene you’ve written that’s made you tear up? A: “So many scenes have made me cry—I don’t tear up, I sob, and writing this series has made me cry a lot more than the Caraval series 💘😭 But don’t be too scared—I’ve put a lot fun scenes in this book. Although, my defintion of fun is a little twisted. 🤭”

Q: Do you already have a favorite scene in “A Curse For True Love”? A: Usually I have favorites but with this book I love every scene. I keep telling my editor to let me know if I’ve gone too far with this story because I’ve had so much fun writing. I keep fearing I must be doing something wrong. 🖤”

There will be more LaLa and Chaos scenes, and apparently Stephanie has gotten carried away with them lol

Q: what’s your favorite scene out of all the books in this series: A: “This is so tough. There’s a scene in CURSE that made me cry and it’s probaly my favorite 💔”

Q: can you tell us who the bonus content povs will be? A: “For B&N and Waterstones, the bonus content is in Eva’s POV. 🦊”

My speculation from the answer above, but this makes me think that the Owlcrate’s edition will be Jacks’s POV if not Evangeline’s.

Q: did u know how acftl would end early on? or did it change as you wrote it? A: “It changed! In January, I hit a wall with the book and after talking with my critique partner @/staceyleeauthor, I realized that I had taken the story in the wrong direction. So I went back, I rewrote, I changed the plot, and I changed a large portion of the ending. This is part of the reason why the book’s publication date was changed from Sept to Oct.”

Q: What three songs come to mind when you think of Evangeline and Jacks? A: “Ooh! It’s hard to pick just three. Here are a few that came to mind first: 1. The Archer by Taylor Swift, 2. You’re Losing Me by Taylor Swift, 3. Religiously by Bailey Zimmerman”

Q: Do you pick the audiobook narrators for your books? A: “I did! @/macmillan.audio is wonderful. They’ve always given me a choice in narrators. The amazing @/rebeccasoleri has narrated all of my audiobooks (so she’s an easy choice). Then for ACFTL I got to choose a second narrator for the Jacks and Apollo chapters and he is also fantastic ❤️”

IMPORTANT TO KNOW ‼️: Q: are there actually multiple copies of acftl with different endings? A: “The book only has one official ending. Which I think is the best ending. However, there are three editions that bonus material in the form of 3 alternate epilogues. The books with bonus epilogues are: 1. Barnes and Noble/Indigo exlusive edition 2. the Waterstones exclusive, 3. the Owlcrate edition. P.S. These 3 bonus epilogues are not canon, they are just for fun! P.P.S. if you get all three, I recommend reading in the order that I shared in this post 😉”

The third map has new locations, along with old ones we have seen like: Merrywood Manor, Merrywood Village, Merrywood Forest, Wolf Hall, Ye Olde Brick Inn: Vacancy One Bed, The Phoenix Tree, Cursed Forest, Tree of Souls, and The Hunt.

ACFTL has 49 chapters with an epilogue. It only has one part titled, IV. Happily Ever After.

The dedication that was revealed says, “For anyone who’s ever hoped for a second chance.”

The tree on the front cover is very important.

ACFTL’s logline: Two villains, one girl, and a deadly battle for happily ever after.

The three words that Stephanie used to describe the book is: Heart-stealing, emotionally-devastating, and painfully romantic.

Stephanie shared the Pinterest board, which could be found here! Some very good hints in there!

The UK editions of ACFTL will have hidden covers. There are four of them and they are: an apple, Jacks’s dagger, a fox paw print, and a wolf in a flower crown.

Fairyloot edition has a special front and back cover that says, "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: Evangeline Fox and The Prince of Hearts" and "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: Evangeline Fox and Apollo Acadian."

Quotes Shared:

“Remember, Little Fox.”

He enjoyed inflicting pain, not receiving it. And yet he couldn’t bring himself to leave the shadows of Evangeline’s bedroom.

“I’m glad you came.” “I’ll always come. Even when you don’t want me to.”

He wanted a piece of her. To keep her. To use her for later.

“What are you to me?” she asked. His eyes locked with hers. “Nothing.”

“Im the one who will never let anyone harm you again.”

“I’m your monster.”

He considered setting the room ablaze just so that he’d have a reason to pick her up and carry her out, to save her one last time, before he left her for good.

“This will hurt.”

I think we talked about this over on ao3 but honestly re2r's ada just doesn't make sense to me. The FBI cover is logical (when you first think about it), but the way she's immediately pulling a gun on Annette the minute they see her and DECLARING her intentions isn't. She then proceeds to reveal her target is Annette, and then her going with the FBI thing becomes less logical, bc why would Annette hand over the G-Virus sample to the feds, either? It's entirely a shock factor thing revolved around Leon, she's only fooling him -- or maybe, she's fooled Ben like this, too, and was forced to stick to her cover when shit went down, we don't know 😭 why did they do my girl ada like that... (ngl re4r ada supremacy. period.)

But either way, un-truths she would throw as a bone to a "civilian" like Leon would of course be caught by Vera, nugget by nugget, while still making her think "mayhaps the FBI is misinformed????" -- I didn't want to ruin that fine line by Ada going on about Annette making the virus and her being the most dangerous of all "g-virus g-virus g-virus" or whatever because 1) WHY WOULD A SPY DO THAT???? 2) it would surely make Vera go "yeah NOPE" 💀💀

I do mention it in the fic that Vera supplies information to Jill (as around that time she's trying to get rid of the weight of all she knows and trying to pass on the "hero's job" to someone else) and they exchange their findings while trying to be careful not to get caught by ppl Umbrella put on Jill's tail. I think I wrote it in passing that Vera was disguised as a secretary and sat back-to-back with Jill on a booth in one of those occasions? She's loosely connected to re3r by having a brief appearance in carlos' police station section in my head, entrusting Jill to him and all and promising to meet up with them in the station once she talks to her dad about it ☹

I realised that I forgot to put an emoji that you can use to ref to me, apologies (am too used to disappearing into the background irl). Can I be 🍅 anon?

The fluff on your work made me scream. Arle pouting? (Though I imagine it’s only visible to reader and the children from how subtle it would be, she’s not very expressive to begin with) Arle being soft?? Yes please, oh my goodness. She needs a lover, therapy, and proper rest (Have you seen her eyebags? 😭 They were there on young Arle too post Clervie death, she needs sleep)

“Let Mother take care of Father” I AM SOBBING. CRYING. TEARS OF JOY- it’s so soft!!!! She definitely deserves the care and oh boy is reader intending to spoil Arle. Especially with the children around. Loving parents who care for their children and nurture them properly? Sign me up!! Even if said children have to look the other way or pass the eye bleach around from their parents being soft around each other.

Though I do imagine it’s reader who starts the bathing together routine and not Arle - she might be conscious of her hands (which reader would absolutely not mind but treasure instead). I was thinking that it took a while before Arle felt comfortable enough to wear anything less than formal attire around reader, and the first time is when reader joins in on Arle working out. If reader were from HotH and saw Arle from young, it might have taken less time to get less formally dressed, but the bathing part is definitely reader initiated. Can totally see this becoming a habit of reader’s to ask if Arle’s ok with it/wants it though! It probably takes longer still for Arle to initiate it, but they definitely have it like in the fic. Just toothrotting fluff and adoration for one another.

Did I tell you I love the way you write Arle and reader? I love your characterisation of them!!! Although Arle is soft here in the way she isn’t really in canon (soft from romance I mean not soft as a character) it isn’t in an ooc manner!

On the Arlevie, my original hc was that reader is a homunculus similar to Albedo, and that they were from Khaenri’ah and were well versed in Khemia (that they then use to make the body that Clervie now is revived in, similar to how Albedo was created). To be honest, I based the Irminsul idea heavily off of the Aranara saying “We shall meet again in Sarva (Irminsul)” so my guess was that that is where the spirits of Teyvatians ultimately congregate when they die.

As for why reader did it, it’s based heavily off Frieren, that reader wants to learn more about humans and thinks that living the life of one would help them understand. And since Arle runs an orphanage as a single parent (effectively), reader revives Clervie to use as a bargaining chip to enter the HotH and live as a human child with both parents. As for the “mad” part of “mad scientist”, I was thinking more mad as in “not caring what the heavenly principles does to them and willing to try anything” than the “clinically insane/batshit crazy” interpretation, though I really do love to see it being explored (I might submit more hcs here, once irl life stops tying me down)

I absolutely love your idea of childhood friends!Arlevie and reader that you mentioned though!!! It gives a lot of meaning to why reader went insane - Clervie being the only person who could hold down and convert two borderline psychopaths would be a very Clervie thing! Though I would assume reader in this case would come under Dottore as an experimental subject (one who just happened to survive his experiments, albeit not being very human anymore) Reader totally seeing the gay before Arlevie even did, and when they come back from getting lobotomized by Dottore to find Clervie dead and Arle going feral they just snap.

This one is a bit long, it’s not a request but just some thoughts, feel free to build on it or stash it elsewhere for later use (idm, it’s always lovely to read, and that goes for anyone else who sees this)

i’m sorry to hear about your kitty’s itching! cats do become sensible to environmental changes so it may be that. one of the strays we feed gets runny nose/eyes when there’s a lot of pollen. i heard that giving them bee pollen helps with their environmental allergies. but i haven’t really tried it. maybe something with her food? my senior dog (who passed about two years ago) became allergic to chicken, turkey, and like a million other things) at like 10yrs old. so if it persists that could maybe be a cause? idk but i hope she feels better soon, i hate seeing sick kitties :((

to end the cat discourse, your neighbor!! im so frustrated when people let cats just roam free in environments where they shouldn’t. i’m not really in favor of outdoor/indoor or just outdoor kitties (aside from stray babies ofc, i wish i could take them all💔). my experience with cats outdoors (like not mine but the strays i’ve seen) is always sooooo negative that i just wouldn’t do it, even if where i lived was more appropriate. i had a neighbor (i never interacted with her) who literally abandoned her male intact cat and he just went around getting everyone pregnant and crying at her house. i haven’t seen him for a while bc he wasn’t really a regular (if he was i would’ve found a way to neuter him at least) but that’s so freaking sad, man. i really can’t with people who leave their pets to fend for themselves. so yeah your neighbor really sucks, and the kitty fights with your baby? whaaat? that’s crazy.

I still can’t believe cats can rip their toe beans 😭😭 it makes so much sense but I just hadn’t considered it and now I’m watching Momo like a HAWK over here I feel like that would so happen to her 😭😭 her itching seems a little better today but seems like it comes and goes ! One of my other cats at my parents’ house struggles from feline eczema or something similar and she has to get steroid injections to tame the flare ups so im hoping it’s not that ☹️ but good to know that bee pollen helps, ill definitely look into that!! UGH I KNOWWWW her cat disappears for weeks at a time too and I’m like how!!! Are you not worried about where he is!!!!!!! One time he came back with a collar I’m assuming somebody got for him and since then they’ve taken it off so it seems like they’re pretty set on just making him appear stray and I don’t understand the reasoning behind it. All their other pets (they have like 2 dogs I think) are strictly indoors so idk why poor kitty has to be abandoned like that ☹️ I always bring him water and food in the summer because they don’t even leave him with food but I’m just so annoyed they don’t do it themselves ughhh. Also I have a neighbor who did the same thing as yours by abandoning their cat and it went around and got pregnant like 4 times since then ! She passed at a pretty young age probably due to the shortened life span and it was just so heartbreaking. At LEAST get your cat spayed and neutered ffs 🤕

warnings: ANGST like so much angst! seriously this doesn’t have a happy ending lmao 😭 swearing, crying, kind of dickhead james- just a ickle bit 🤏 a bit of lily slander (i love lily 😭 i’m sorry lily 😭 marry me lily 🙏) i need to stop with emojis. of course the first thing i write of james is angst. lemme know if i missed anything.

summary: james wants to make lily jealous, y/n has obviously had a crush on him for forever, he starts hanging out with her instead of pining after lily to make her jealous. when it works, y/n feels like an idiot for not realising sooner.

i have to say this isn’t my best executed idea, but tbh this is probably one of my favourite things i’ve written- i just love it

james potter knew he had to change his approach of getting lily to at least tolerate him. ‘jealousy is a powerful emotion’. padfoot had told him this hundreds of times, though he obviously meant a random hookup, james did consider this. he realised it was actually a very smart idea, but not the way he meant.

replacing his normal ‘chats’ with lily for ‘touchy giggles’ with someone else would surely be smart. right?

y/n l/n was a well known friend amongst the marauders, her and sirius sharing similar upbringings and swiftly becoming lifelong friends meant she hung around them a lot. in her time with them, she grew some strong feelings for a certain james potter, and he thought he could use this to his advantage. james never realised that what y/n had wasn’t some ‘school girl crush’, she was in love with him. the only person who knew this was sirius, and it pained him to see his best friend hurt, especially when she was so much better for james than lily. but he couldn’t see it, he couldn’t understand that y/n was always there for him. every time he cried over lily. every time she rejected him. every time he needed help coming up with something to say to her. every. single. time.

james told remus about his plan, who was incredibly sceptical. “james, are you sure this is a good idea? she really likes you… is it smart to lead her on?” this caused james to pause, thinking for a moment he decided “sirius hugs her. sirius puts his arm around her. sirius pushes her hair behind her ear. sirius kisses her cheek, and her forehead. i won’t do anything he doesn’t do, i wouldn’t consider it ‘leading her on’… simply ‘growing our friendship’.

remus had a very bad feeling about this, but in some way james had a point. although he knew y/n would interpret his ‘overly friendly’ behaviour as more.

weeks went past, and james and y/n were growing closer than ever before, she felt as though he finally forgot about his ever growing feelings for lily, and finally realised she was right there. she was happy. every time he’d push her hair behind her ear, she couldn’t help but giggle slightly, feeling a blush tint her cheeks. one day, he used this to his advantage. the two were in the library, studying for some test coming up, and lily was opposite them, glaring. she realised she should have just admitted her feelings before he moved on. she realised she needed to act soon, before it was too late. when he pushed her hair behind her ear, that was her breaking point. she walked up to them, plastering a fake smile on her face when she looked at y/n, and politely asked james “hey, is it alright if we meet up later? i need to talk to you?”. he almost leapt out of his chair in joy “yeah of course, where abouts?” they mutually decided just to talk in a quiet corner of the common room before she made a swift exit.

“y/n/n i’ll see you later alright?” she nodded sadly, feeling like he’d fall for her all over again, not realising he never stopped. “yeah… yeah that’s fine” he left quickly, this time without a forehead kiss, unlike all the other times he’d say goodbye to her. she shook it off ‘he’s just in a hurry’ she thought.

when he got to his dorm, he saw moony sitting on his end and rushed to him. “yes! moony i told you my plan would work! lily asked to see me later, she asked to talk to me. the day has finally arrived!”. sirius, who was sitting on his bed, was admittedly a little confused. ‘plan what plan?’ he couldn’t help but wonder. when james left to talk to lily, he went over to remus. “what was james’ plan to get lily to talk to him?”sirius had a bad feeling, he needed confirmation that his suspicion wasn’t correct. but unfortunately life doesn’t work like that. “before you get mad at me, i tried to convince him not to do it.” sirius nodded, jaw clenched before he asked once again “what plan, moony?” the brief pause scared sirius, before remus blurted out “james realised he needed to replace the time he spent pining after lily with flirting with someone else. i tried to get him to choose some 5th year that has a slightly obsessive crush on him, but he said it wouldn’t work if it was obvious. he decided to make it believable he had to use y/n, everyone knows she likes him. i swear sirius i thought he’d forget about lily and realise y/n/n was better for him, i honestly didn’t think it would work.”

sirius was beyond mad, so he went downstairs to the common room, only to find a certain brunette boy making out with none other than lily evans. then, what he saw next broke his heart. y/n walked in through the portrait hole, and stopped when she saw them. she felt frozen. tears began to prick in her eyes at the realisation. he used her. he tricked her into thinking maybe they could be something. everything was still always about lily fucking evans. sirius rushed over to her, engulfing her in a hug. “i’m so sorry” she just sniffled into his chest “did you know?” she asked timidly, afraid to speak any louder. “no, i swear, i never would have let him do it” she just nodded and held onto him tighter. “let’s get you upstairs, yeah?” she nodded once again, and let him guide her to his dorm. he didn’t know what to do… he didn’t know whether to punch james, or to hex him. to let y/n cry, or make her sleep. he didn’t know what to do. his two best friends, one of them hurt the other, who happened to be in love with him. james fucked up, and now sirius didn’t know what to do anymore.

after about an hour of y/n talking a ‘sad shower’ where she contemplated everything she thought she knew, and what she knows now, she came back into the marauders dorm, wearing one of sirius’ hoodies and some of her own joggers she left there a couple weeks ago. “how you feeling bubs?” sirius asked, to which she shrugged and said “like shit. but hey, at least he’s happy y’know. he got what he wanted, that’s all that matters right?” he shook his head “not if his happiness is at your expense. he shouldn’t have tricked you like that.” the conversation swiftly ended, and she snuggled up into sirius’ bed. oddly enough, everyone in the room hoped james stayed in lily’s tonight. they all knew y/n would want to be with sirius, but they also knew her seeing james would end in more tears, lots of shouting, and maybe a punch and a hex from sirius. heck, maybe even from y/n herself.

ten more minutes later, just when sirius had nearly coaxed y/n to sleep, james walked in. he was whistling that silent little whistle one does when they’re over the moon, that was, until he saw the look on sirius’ face.

“what. the. fuck. james?” he looked at him confused, even though he realised what was going on. sirius found out. “look, mate, before you say anything-“ he was cut off “no! don’t ‘look, mate’ me. why did you have to do that? i get it, you like lily, but use some 5th year that’ll get over it, not someone that’s liked you since they knew you!”

at this point, y/n got out of bed and decided to face james herself. “congrats james, i hope she makes you real happy” she spoke just above a whisper, sarcasm evident in her tone. he didn’t realise she’d be here. “you saw?” he asked, voice breaking ever so sightly, he had to admit, he did feel bad. but it was just a crush… right? “yes, james i saw. thank you, by the way. didn’t make me feel like an idiot or anything!”. he shook his head “i really am sorry y/n, but it’s just a crush. it’s not like your in love with me.” he said, admittedly, quite harshly. y/n shook her head “yeah… yeah it’s ok. cause it’s not like i’ve been in love with you since third year. it’s not like my ‘feelings’ for you matter. they’re just some stupid crush right?” he stood there stunned, y/n loved him?

“james i wasn’t mad that you loved lily. cause i kept telling myself you were the right person, it was just the wrong time. i convinced myself that give or take a few years you’d get over this obsession and realise that i love you! but then you didn’t. and i realised that it wasn’t your fault i fell in love with someone who just didn’t like me that much! but then you did this. james, if you want to get the girl, don’t use me as collateral damage. don’t treat me as some tart you can wave around just to get lily’s attention! because now? now i am mad james! now i’m fucking furious. because i’m not some meat on a bone you can tempt your bitch with!”

when she said that, something in him turned red. “don’t talk about her like that!” y/n turned to look him in the eye, tears falling from hers. “of course! your still thinking about lily fucking evans. the world doesn’t revolve around her james! you can’t get pissed at me for being pissed at you and the girl you used me to get! that’s not how life works. i’m allowed to be mad at you! i’m allowed to be mad at her! because she didn’t realise how great you were until, for once, lily evans didn’t get everything she wanted. she didn’t have you. and then she wanted you. do you see how fucked up this is james?!” y/n couldn’t stop crying, she felt stupid. she felt angry. she felt upset. she felt used. and she felt betrayed. sirius took her into his arms, she was clearly no longer able to form a coherent sentence. “mate, you fucked up. and you’re gonna need to apologise, tomorrow. or maybe in a week. i don’t care! but she needs her friends right now, so either stick to your bed, or sleep in the common room, or lily’s room. i’m mad at you. you may be my best friend, but i currently need to be with my sister. so we’ll talk about this in the morning. but please. just let her get some sleep”

james nodded, looking down. that was the first time sirius called y/n his sister. normally it was always ‘she’s like my sister’. and if there was one thing sirius was protective over, it was his chosen family. especially y/n. he knew he made a mistake, but there was sort of him that couldn’t shake the fact that lily evans liked him. because of course, when y/n was at her worst, the only thing james could think about, the only thing he could ever think about, was lily fucking evans.
