Headcanons! Cult of the lamb

Leshy, Heket, Shamura, Kallamar, Narinder and The lamb.

General:

(this will be in follower form for the bishops)

Leshy

Dude is definetly not happy upon being indoctrinated into the cult.

Like first he gets killed by the lamb and NOW he has to follow their commands? Yeah to say the least he might be a bit annoyed at first.

When you first introduce yourself, he might be a little skeptical mainly because he was a bishop so what were you gonna do? Make fun of him? Pull a ''prank'' Just because you could?

Surprisingly, no! You were kind, just trying to get to know him better, and trying to get him to know the cult a little better.

He is forever greatful if you help him around the place.

Romantic:

If Leshy smells anything he thinks is something like a flower, then he might try and guide you towards them.

Mainly because it might be difficult picking them, when he cant see where the hell he's going.

9.5 / 10 hugs and you cant convince me otherwise.

He might be a bit moist because of all the stuff growing on him but he definetly smells nice. (or atleast i headcanon it as such).

He can and will be a living scarf if he REALLY craves your attention.

Heket

General:

Heket was not the happiest when she awoke in the lambs cult to say the least.

Allthough she was hungry, (cant blame her tbh).

When you approached her and offered her a couple of berries as a little welcome gift you definetly became one of her favorites.

She probably didn't even want to try and care for someone that isn't her siblings, at this point.

She especially appreceates if you basically speak for her, mainly because you can get to the point (and the words) alot faster then her.

Heket will do absolutely anything to avoid you or anyone else finding out anything that embarrases her that isnt known, like her losing to the lamb.

She enjoys all meals with either you or her siblings.

Romantic:

If you pick her up in front of others for no reason you are getting the frog equivilent of a bitch slap.

She does still have a reputation to uphold to prevent the followers from being too cruel even as a member of the cult.

Okay but seriously, Heket is basically your knight in shining armor.

Someones bothering you? just tell Heket, and she will take care of it.

She loves it when you bring her snakcs while waiting for a meal to be done whenever you cook.

Can and will pass you notes of what she wants you to say to someone, if she's really annoyed bcause of something they did.

Might be dissapointed if you rephrase it, to not be as rude as what she wrote.

Shamura

General:

Them always seeking knowledge was definetly one of the things that allowed you to bond with them quickly.

You telling them about things they might find interesting, and them sharing some of the things they remember.

Shamura likes it when you remind them of small things they might forget.

They also like sharing stories of their past with you, or giving you small gifts.

Not that they cant defend themselves against other cult members who might be looking for payback (they probably can't).

But you talking some sense into the cultists heads definetly does not go unoticed.

Romantic:

Shamura probably does like cuddles, especially when comforting them.

Might forget that you gave them something and try to return it to you.

If you remind them, then well they'll probably feel a bit ashamed that they forgot one of your gifts.

Please comfort Shamura if this happens.

Kallamar

General:

Kallamar is a very nervous person so you showing them kindness was definetly unexpected.

you being nice? To him, and this quickly? You must be plotting something, he thought. but when you continuesly kept showing kindness and defended him from any rude cult members, he quickly realized that it wasn't the case.

he likes it alot when you reassure him that everythings gonna be fine. This man isn't much for standing up for himself. So if you do stand up for him, when other cultists come to do whatever they'd wanna do, he'll be very thankful.

If you went through the trouble of learning sign language just to communicate with him easilier his heart basically melts (not literally though).

Romantic:

He loves holding your hand. he likes the comfort of you being around.

expect him to be with you for a majority of the time.

will hug you whenever he feels nervous if he is allowed to (usually he is).

If he's trying to talk to you about something personal he'll usually use sign language with you when alone.

Kallamar spends so much time with you that half of his stuff is probably at your place.

Narinder

General:

He was not letting anyone even try and converse with him, after his indoctrination.

Not like people were gonna try anyway, considering what he tried to do.

But theres always someone different, and that just so happened to be you.

You kept trying to start a conversation, pestering him untill he finally tried to actually speak with you.

He wasn't very happy when he finally did start talking.

Despite that you just kept coming back.

Soon he actually started trying to engage the conversations, not really having much else to do.

Small conversation became a small friendship.

Soon Narinder found himself actively trying to spend time with you , and you were more then happy to do so.

Atleast the place wasn't as bad now for Narinder.

Romantic:

This dude is for close to anything but PDA (Public displays of affection).

Will purr if you hug him.

Narinder will never admit it but he's a total cuddle bug when in private.

Will do anything to prevent the lamb from finding out because he already knows he's gonna get teased for eternity the second they find out.

The lamb definetly makes the first move.

Will do a marriage ritiual as soon as you feel comfortable with it.

Will spend lots of time with you in their free time.

You're probably being put in charge of taking care of things whenever they go on crusades, mainly because they trust you the most.

Doesn't have alot of time when they're not working but they spend almost every second that they're not busy beside you

Not necessarily because he has some vendetta against quirkless people but because he was just always told by everyone he looked up to that they were weaker. It would take some serious work to change his mind

Kamakiri - he will probably think theyre weak until they do something to prove themselves in some way like beat him or someone stronger in a fight or something like that. After they do that though he isn't letting anyone talk shit about them

Kuroiro - he writes some dramatic ass poetry about them being quirkless so he can try to 'better understand what theyre going through' he gives the poem to them so they can check its accuracy lmao

Kendo - at first she will feel a bit of a need to protect them but it dosent take long for her to realize that they are at UA for a reason and they dont need to be treated like some defenseless citizen

Kodai - shes a pretty neutral person about everything but even she was a bit surprised when she found out her classmate was quirkless. She didnt want to protect them since they were here for a reason but she cant help herself from feeling like theyre weaker.

Komori - at first shes a bit surprised that someone quirkless managed to get into the hero course but other than that she doesn't care. She treats them the same way she treats everyone else

Shiozaki - she definitely feels a need to protect them (at least for a little while) and it takes her quite a while to realize that they are just as capable as a hero as herself and the rest of her classmates despite not having a quirk

Shishida - hes probably a bit sad for them. Like he feels bad that they dont have a quirk like its a bad thing or something simply because he cant imagine life without having one ykyk? He thinks hes being nice when trying to help them or by trying to sympathize with them saying to stay strong or whatever when hes not helping in the slightest

Shoda - he treats them like someone that needs protection for a long while and it probably takes them beating his ass in training for him to change his mind.

Pony - she doesn't really care tbh. As long as theyre nice she likes them and treats them how she treats everyone else. They probably end up being good friends ngl

Tsubaraba - he tries to show off his quirk in a 'i can protect you' kind of way but it just comes off a bit ass-hole like. He dosent mean any harm but hes a bit stupid when it comes to certain things. He does definitely think his quirkless classmate is weaker but hes probably proven wrong quite quickly lmao.

Tetsutetsu - he dosent care that theyre quirkless. I mean this is a hero school that only the best can get into so if anything hes impressed asf and thinks its super manly

Tokage - shes a little skeptical at first but over time she gets more used to them and becomes pretty good friends with them. It does take a little bit though only because or internal prejudice against quirkless people because of how she was raised (we love fantasy racism here)

Manga - he honestly didnt know they were quirkless for a while. He just thought they didnt like to show off their quirk or it was something people couldn't really see. After he found out he made a mini comic about a quirkless hero because he found the idea of a quirkless hero cool :)

Honenuki - he is so nice i swear. He not only treats them the same way he treats everyone else but he makes sure he knows their abilities so he can accurately determine if they can do something on their own or if they need help. Ykyk

Bondo - he was definitely worried for them for a while (probably still is) but he dosent vocalize it or even act on it at all. He knows they are very capable and he feels a little guilty for thinking this way but at the end of the day they are still quirkless and theres a lot they couldn't do that quirk users probably could.

Monoma - he uses his quirkless classmate as leverage against class A. He will walk up and say shit like 'your class is so weak that my quirkless class mate could beat the shit out of anyone in your class.' And they will just be behind him, trying to get him to stfu

Reiko - she is the queen of not giving a fuck. As long as they can prove themselves then she dosent care about them being quirkless. Shes probably one of the only ones that treats them as she would anyone else straight out of the gate

Rin - hes probably a bit skeptical at first honestly but he quickly realizes that they are just as capable as anyone else despite being quirkless. Hes tries not to treat them differently since theyre quirkless but he finds it hard to not ask about it since hes curious about how they live as one of the only people without a quirk

OUHGH. WELL

i have a separate post where i talk about him and cheated and i go into a lot there, but YES SIR

physically i think he is probably one of the smallest (being the most insistent on it, rivaling little broken) but im not one of the people that believes them to be different birds; i think all of them but the narrator are crows.

the wings i give him are small and flighty, even for his stature. i dont think he is the way he is by choice. he tells the others and the princess (the wild) that he is small, and he feels his first bit of respite when she says he can be more than that. ive explained before how i think of all the voices as trauma responses, and his is one of the more obvious. Kill or be killed, as he says explicitly.

but of course he would want a break from all that; anyone would. his final words in the Moment of Clarity, "im ready to sleep" (or something of the sort) just shows that this poor guy needs his rest. He is also Always Right and i LOVE that in a character. the smelling everything? GOD. him being the only one to deny the mirror is SO GOOD. he would be the one to understand that our eyes can trick us, even above the skeptic!!!

but this is about headcanons not just why i like him (i could go on)

i like assigning things colors, and hunted got an almost highlighter teal (for his scales). it does not help him; it is another thing he can't change about himself, that he just has to live with. he is unfortunately very resigned to his role in the game of cat and mouse. i wish he could be there to experience one of the happier endings, where it isn't so much a life-or-death situation. love is just as much a part of survival as anything. i want him to be allowed to be alive.

i kind of think he likes the others a lot, especially the more competent ones. he understands the strengths of the ones that have gone through what he has. he may not be so open to those of the Knifeless routes (opp, conty, smitty).

Hero is one that i think he gets a long with a lot. Hero would want him to take it easy, and i kind of have him as a somewhat protective older brother figure to the little Hunted. being very supportive like "hey you kept us alive ^^ :D" and hunted being unable to take that compliment because. "Of course i did."

i kind of think of him as a little brother to some others too (stub, skippy) but Hero would be one to let him take a break, unlike the other two. (Imagine Stubborn trying to tell someone not to fight. yeah no)

I, and Hunted himself, think of him as very animalistic. instinctual. he will run himself into the dirt until the worms swallow him. there is no limit to his effort except death. in the route of the Beast, it is obvious that he doesn't let exhaustion stop him. anything for the sake of survival; there can be no rest.

im sure some Other Voices have some Things to say about that.

Cheated is a lot like Hunted, excluding the "kill or be killed" instinct. they both have the perseverance to continue fighting, but cheated has a different kind of patience. i think they'd understand and trust each other, in a way they usually cant with others, but in ways some others have amongst themselves. Cheated would see Hunted's unhealthy way of dealing with things and would probably be the most adamant on giving him a break. "he does the most for us so why doesn't he get to rest?" kinda thing.

but also i think cheated thinks hunted is pretty (because i like to think hunted is pretty bird)

okay big wall of some of my shadow generations thoughts . spoiler warning obviously

i will start by just saying that this game is soo good like in general. ive said before that i was initially very skeptical of this whole thing but very quickly changed my mind upon seeing the first trailer and im SO glad that it did turn out to be good. this feels like one of the first times in a really long time that theyve put actual care into shadows involvement in a story instead of just throwing him in something for five seconds because they know hes popular. the game IS a bit short but i was expecting that and its somewhat reasonable considering its technically only half the game. but what we did get was great. we are so back .

i love the gameplay i talked earlier about how i like that they put more effort into making shadow play differently from sonic by incorporating his chaos powers into his gameplay, but the doom powers are really cool also and were such a fun addition. ive always wished they would do more with shadow being part black arms but didnt expect it to ever come up again so everything about this is kinda surreal to me

i love love love the optional dialogue i went out of my way to make sure i didnt miss any of it and theres so many cute ones and i have to stop myself from mentioning specific ones on this post because if i do ill be going on forever

also the music was good Obviously thats a given with sonic games. but special shoutouts to the menu music i thought it was a cute detail that sonics side had a remix of it doesnt matter while shadows was a remix of throw it all away. and that all hail shadow remix for the final boss goes sooo hard i was honestly expecting them to use i am all of me but this is cool too

as far as criticisms and nitpicks go. uhhhhh . this isnt that big a deal but i do find it the tiniest bit disappointing that they didnt really leave anything a surprise in terms of the gameplay, if im remembering right they showed pretty much everything in the trailers except for the final boss but im sure everyone knew who that was going to be it was jut the specific form he took that was the surprise. but like i said its not that big a deal especially considering they didnt show much of the story in the trailers so it balances out in a way . also i didnt know what the best place to put this in would be but i just wanted to say i got so excited when i got to the final stage because radical highway is one of my favorite sonic levels . peace and love on planet earth

i also think chaos island was a weird choice for a stage because all the others are from games shadow is a main character in but he isnt in frontiers at all? maybe they didnt wanna repeat games and were running out of ideas so they just threw a frontiers stage in since it wouldnt have any representation otherwise. i dont know.

there is only one real "this sucks" thing for me and its rouge's voice acting. its soo terrible ive never liked her current voice but she sounded particularly bad here to the point where it was distracting..... when it comes to other voice actors who are one of my less liked voices for their character im at least able to say that theyre doing a good job or have improved a lot over the years even if theyre not my first pick. but i swear to god rouge has gotten worse

yellow - mage of light (moreso on the knowledge front than the luck front, similar to rose but more active in his role, likes to figure things out but using what shes previously learned)

blue - witch of life (FEFERI WOOO obv shes very witchy, leaf feels like theyd be more rebellious, life player bc its very energetic and tends to take on a healer role in the group)

red - knight of heart (tends to jump straight to protecting her friends, very impulsive and passionate/soulful, acts confident but is sometimes more hesitant than others realise)

victim - thief of hope (man i was so on point with this one)

chosen - mage of doom (has a lot of firsthand experience with doom and suffering, also suffers from their aspect, and very good at causing doom *cough* chosen has never won a fight on the right side *cough*)

dark - heir of time (very destructive by default, causes a lot of death, RED 🔥🔥🔥, but also logical, at times a bit too laid back and chill)

striker - maid of mind (maid im not sure on i just wasnt sure what else to do, mind bc shes very straightforward, thoughtful, plans ahead, very serious and logical)

purple - prince of blood (accidentally or on purpose fucks up almost all his relationships at some point, at the same time is also the reason most of his friends met in the first place, Prince = royalty theming, also matches with green)

mango - rogue of life (acts very skeptical and un-lifey but takes life from others to give to the people they care about)

gold - sylph of hope (loves to cheer people up, very hopeful and energetic demeanor, fairly childish, wants to make everyone happy all the time!!!)

hangman - bard of rage (calms people down, fairly chill compared to the other players, prefers to support and wishes people were more peaceful and mature)

ballista - knight of breath (session lacks breath for reasons i dont feel like describing rn, acts chill but actually feels like he cant live up to the title of Hero and isnt that carefree, protects the few people he attaches himself too <- that one scene in his original short where he draws upon the memories of his friends to open the door)

hazard - seer of void (ngl this is mostly just process of elimination but hazard feels pretty void oriented tbf. hes so chill hes not minding anyones business)

karlach: cal has a huge crush on her literally from the start but once she gets to know her cal is sooo completely devoted. Let-Me-Be-The-Hammer-In-Your-Hand devoted. routinely will make an idiot of herself if it'll make karlach laugh. she makes cal feel protected, which cal.. really needs, and she protects karlach in turn.

astarion: her best friend. unfortunately. hes the first person she tells about the whole "i died but it didnt take" thing, mostly because they both realize pretty quickly that neither is alive in the traditional sense. they are making each other worse and making each other better at once. cals actually largely on the same page s him regarding how much spare time they have to help out random people, but often agrees to it anyway specifically to annoy him

wyll: man cal would be a little annoyed by his whole Hero thing initially, but once she learns about his contract she realizes that what really frustrates her is that hes in essentially the same situation as her but has come out of it more willing than ever to help the people around him and it makes her have to analyze her own selfishness. she really admires him and also frankly he and karlach have both frequently stopped cal and astarion from enabling each other. and also they are wingmen for each other

gale: cal loves a nerd. i think they would kind of get on each others nerves a lot because cal can't Not be kind of a shit, and gale can't really not be a little bit of a know-it-all, but eventually it gets to be more affectionate than anything and cal does take a genuine interest in his relationship with magic. also they would loooove cooking together

lae'zel: genuinely don't think cal would know what to do with lae'zel. i think she wants to see what lae'zel will do next. i do feel theyd have a brief Thing because cal would absolutely admire her strength but it wouldn't really work out because cal isnt.. soft per se but does like a bit of softness. cal would want to know lae'zel's perspective on so many things though, she likes how forthright lae'zel is about everything

shadowheart: i think........ cal is a little skeptical of anyone who is deeply religious, even in this world lol. cal respects it and all but she would i think feel that she and SH are kind of on a similar leash, and they have had similar things taken from them (parts of their memory, for one). HOWEVER they get to be good friends and cal would loooove how judgy SH is sometimes. they would gossip with each other so much

i think 13 and yazs dad would get on like a house on fire. she actually loves his pakora and hes like FINALLY someone who understands my VISION. he periodically sends yaz pictures and videos he took of the newspaper or the news on tv with the request to show it to the doctor and dutifully but skeptically yaz always does and the doctor always wants to check it out because even if it isnt really something hakim always sends stuff that seems specifically chosen to pique her interest, which it isnt, they just have similar opinions on what counts as interesting. and like 60% of the time it actually IS something. and the other 40 they have a nice day out seeing sheffield under the guise of “investigating” and report back to hakim at the end of the day what theyve found. it’s like a little holiday. if yesterday they saved three civilisations and also got a cat out of a tree then today they’ll check out one of hakims hunches.

sonya i think would take a while for 13 to warm up to. sonya clocks whats going on within two minutes of seeing them together and takes it as her duty as a sister to tease yaz and her weird girlfriend until the end of time. she treats the doctor with that same abrasiveness that covers affection that she does yaz and it takes the doctor a while to figure out what to do with that. but as they spend more time together she starts to see through the teenage posturing how much sonya cares about yaz and how much yaz cares about sonya and she recognises herself in sonya as much as she does in yaz. recognises the insecurity and fragility behind the big mouth. approaches sonya when she sits in a corner on her phone at family gatherings and starts telling her stories of everything she got up to at school (hotwiring warp drives) and slowly but surely she gets sonyas guard down and there grows some genuine affection between them. a relationship thats more than the initial I See You Care About Yaz As Much As I Care About Yaz And I Respect You For That But I Dont Really Get You

they all get together on birthdays and holidays and yaz brings the doctor and sonya brings ryan and ryan brings graham and yaz is like damn. damn it. this is what i was trying to avoid. this is what i didnt want to happen. wasnt sure what i DID want to happen but it sure as shit wasnt this situation that is unfolding right now in front of me. as the doctor is offering pakoras her dad made to two people whove been sort of father figures to her, one who was also kind of an inferior to her in a flat team structure dont question the math there and also her best friend for three years in what were at times definitely traumatising circumstances that she hasnt dared to look too closely at yet, and another who was basically an honorary grandad to her and actual grandad to ryan who sits across from her holding hands under the table with sonya and they both definitely definitely are very sure in what they think is happening between her and the doctor and have no reservations smugly hinting at it in front of her parents and okay fine maybe they are a little bit right and okay yes probably her parents do also know but that doesnt mean we need to acknowledge anything or talk about it thanksss :):):):):)

but she gets over it. and the doctor, who was very much resigned to never seeing graham or ryan or dan ever again, is overjoyed and after every party yaz has to convince her of the joys of delayed gratification and also the fact that if she skips right to next year right now she’ll have to wait two years for the next time.

najia takes a bit to come around. she has missed years of her daughter’s life and it’s hard not to blame the doctor for that. it’s hard to trust her or be okay with all this when she was deliberately kept out of the loop since the moment yaz met her. the doctor feels like this threatening force, fell into her life calling her on her husband’s phone mysteriously knowing her whereabouts and asking about her daughter. knows her name but never introduces herself. only has “it’s a long story” to offer in response to “who are you and how do you know my daughter”. and while not being forthcoming with whats going on in her life or head is hardly new or surprising behaviour coming from yaz, it’s still concerning in combination with this stranger who yaz seems very familiar with and the sentence “i owe the doctor my life”. it’s suspicious. it’s weird. and it doesnt help that after that chaotic first impression, her second impression of the doctor will be yaz telling her “i ran away with her travelling through time and space and i lied to you about it for years” and conspicuously not telling her “your impression of whats going on between us was right that first time when you’d only seen us together for like half an hour”

but because yaz is clearly happier than shes been in years and also because all these other people seem to trust the doctor too - especially the adults, she probably discreetly questions dan and graham about her some time - she does come around eventually. because especially with 13 i think it’s hard not to love her once you get past the initial suspicion about the Weirdness. especially because with yazs family she’d dial the Im Nice Im Friendly Im Not A Threat Ive Never Murdered Anyone In My Entire Life Please Love Me mask up to 11. and najia is a mother and shes a mother to yaz and if yaz is even slightly her mother’s daughter and the doctor is a lot like yaz, najia will be kind to her i think. she’ll become a little bit of a third daughter. once najia’s been convinced of the Im Not A Threat thing. and the doctor and yaz get the same thousand yard stare sometimes. which she gets angry about too. and yaz and her fight about too, a couple times. but in the end the doctor seems like a net positive on yazs life, and even if she isnt, it’s unlikely shes gonna leave anytime soon so better make peace sooner rather than later. though i do think the doctor will charm her. and she’ll have a relationship with najia like she will with hakim and sonya.

the doctor always sits in the same spot on the sofa whenever they come over and eventually yaz is like “you know we can just buy a sofa? for at home? could even be a purple one” and the doctor Lights Up like she hadnt thought of that and they get a purple sofa and they sit on it every night because nobody dies. happily ever after. the end

Wednesday stepped into the changing room and got dressed quite quickly.

Her match was up in 3 others.

She was used to the weighted feeling in her stomach, the feeling that tingled up her spine and left through her arms, sometimes creeping up her neck to give her an involuntary twitch to be rid of it.

The ravenette quite enjoyed it, though. The horrible feeling it gave quite euphoric, making her feel even more weightless than usual.

Untouchable.

She heard the first match end, with that the feeling grew, attempting to escape out of her mouth.

The soft, droning chatter kept her grounded, the talk of who was next, people trying to see their opponent early or just having general conversations as if they weren’t about to knock each other out a moment later.

Thing tapped softly on her thigh, and with that she looked down.

Her eyebrows questioned his actions and he signed to her

“I found your opponent.”

And with that the second match was over, cheering, clanking and over all screaming could be heard from practically miles away.

She signed back

“Where are they?”

“Follow me.”

Wednesday got up, leaving the space with her bag and water bottle behind.

After quite the short walk, she spots the character thing was describing on the way over.

Blonde, the bottoms being dyed opposing colours.

Fangs being exposed while she was laughing, intimidatingly needle like.

“This her?” Wednesday’s hand started signing, making quite klunky sounds on the table next to her.

However, she didn’t get to finish as her opponent noticed her.

She turned around and happily skipped toward.

Wednesday’s eyes were glued to her, skeptically eyeing her and checking her out to see how she could beat her.

“Hey!” She shouted out “Are you my opponent? My friends pointed you out to me a second ago!” The blonde chuckled, huffing out air. “Im Enid, pleasure to meet you. And to fight you, of course.”

The raven like girl backed up a bit, slightly frowning at such a bubbly girl.

Her hand didn’t hesitate or leave a beat to pass as she signed:

“Yes, I am your opponent. My name is Wednesday. It is a pleasure to fight you. Thing told me about you.” She struggled a bit with the last parts, not being sure how it were to translate properly.

“Ohh” Enid’s eyes were struck with realisation. “Okay I get you, Its really nice to meet you, Wednesday! And hello, thing” Her eyes calmed a bit as she said the other girl’s name, her shoulders slightly relaxing.

Thing waved to Enid happily.

“It really is nice to meet you, sometimes I go into the ring not knowing the opponent and the look in their eye kinda scares me” The taller girl huffs put happily now.

Wednesday signed quickly, now more knowing of Enid’s abilities of reading sign. “Personally I find their look of pure murder relaxing, it makes me become much more relaxed when I see that break down as they run out of stamina.”

“Ah, well its a selective likeness, I suppo-“ The bell rings out and another floor of cheering fills the gaps in the air.

“We’re on.”

“We are. Well it was nice speaking to you, and just so you aren’t disappointed, be aware my flame definitely isnt going to be put out.” Enid smiled at this, giving the other girl a wink, then she walks out and to her side.

Thing signs on the remaining girl’s shoulder.

“I like her”

Nothing could tear Wednesday’s eyes from Enid Sinclair.

i did enjoy dawntrail a lot, i agree that it works great as a standalone and i also really liked what they did with living memory as a set piece and concept, but i honestly thought the writers had a bad habit of playing things too safe, and their handling of some of the characters was pretty clumsy. bakool ja ja and zoraal ja got it the worst, but i also think they introduced sphene a bit too late for the way they were trying to tell her story.

honestly i think bakool ja ja's arc and the cooking competition in yak tel is a good example of the issues with dt's writing. if they knew they were planning to give him a heel-face turn in the section immediately following this and had only presented him as an unlikeable jackass until then, why wouldn't they use the cooking competition as a way to set that up? pairing wuk lamat with koana was certainly the easy route but it felt like such a wasted opportunity. we already know koana, we've already seen him in a positive light. this shouldve been the point where we learn more about bakool ja ja, see how wuk lamat handles working with people she can't get a long with, and give some depth to what has thus far been a pretty one-note antagonist. koana doesn't even do anything in this arc!! he gets paired with wuk lamat and then immediately gets shuffled off screen. it was such a waste. they pretty much just tell us to hate bakool ja ja up until the exact moment they want us to feel bad for him, which made the whole arc kind of a flop for me.

zoraal ja also desperately needed to get more attention. like any attention at all. hes pretty much nonexistent until the midpoint of the story, and even then you don't really see him until youre getting ready to kill him. i really felt like he needed more room to breathe. krile also felt like an afterthought pretty much every time she came up, and i personally did not really like the payoff for what i will skeptically refer to as her arc. but its krile, not getting enough screentime is just her way.

the solution nine arc was also just kind of awkward to me. i honestly feel dawntrail's back half is made worse by knowing what theyre referencing, because if youve already played 9 you just spend that whole arc watching dawntrail fumble the game's same themes while throwing in whole sequences and set pieces for nostalgia. and while i do like sphene, i found it grating how long they keep making you be nice to her after the first reveal and thought she felt like kind of a tired retread of the same ideas they presented with hades and meteion (and golbez i guess).

i do like dawntrail, i agree that its probably one of the better expansions even if it never quite reaches the same highs as some of the other stories. it just couldve been a lot better than it was. its very well presented, just not as well constructed. it has a lot of fun moments, great visual design, some nice ideas. it was a little sloppy in places, i can definitely see why some people might have felt the first half dragged even if i personally didnt mind it. i wouldnt put it on the same level as shadowbringers, i dont think its quite as consistent, but i would put it in the endwalker-stormblood range. ragtime mouse isnt in it though, so 0/10

@druidquest see it was very obvious to me throughout dawntrail that a lot of this was an epic previous final fantasy reference (i haven't meaningfully played any final fantasies besides fourteen) but unlike endwalker postgame being a bunch of ff4 nostalgia bait that falls flat if you haven't played that game (with a "hey you guys loved shadowbringers right, remember shadowbringers?" bonus round) dawntrail works perfectly well without ever having played final fantasy nine. it pays homage and references and builds upon both earlier expansions and earlier games but it's not trying to ride the coattails of a better story in order to have any meaningful emotional payoff it's just good on its own and probably enhanced by knowing the original context of the things it references.

i don't think it was clumsy at all, dawntrail has a laser focus on its themes and message from start to finish in a way that makes the digressions and silly little errands you inevitably get sent on to pad the space between major plot beats feel much less excessive and annoying than they did in every expansion before. and it's funny that you call it an amusement park ride because the final area being exactly that is extremely intentional, living memory is an artificial experience meant to bring joy and relief from everyday sadness and sphene is dressed in a tacky plastic looking dress because she's the theme park mascot princess that serves as the face of that artificial experience. saying it's just clumsy but heartfelt references and cool shit rather than an emotionally impactful and well written epic is massively underselling how well put together dawntrail is. it's at least as good as shadowbringers and endwalker and which one you think is better will come down purely to personal preference.
