hello and welcome to fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.

The Heart of the Scorpion by crystalklances

Lance has a big old crush on the school's Soccer Captain, Keith. He tries to deny having a crush even while their every interaction sends his heart aflutter. Romantic horoscopes and secret love letters? Totally not related to Keith. Luckily, heart and stars align to prove him wrong.

i will fucking miss crystalklances every single day of my life he was a PILLAR. i wish he had kept his account and just abaondoned it but im grateful at least that he only orphaned his fics and didnt delete it. he had so much to write about the college scene and soft klance and them being tender and soft and open about it!! he also often gave keith parents and he almost ALWAYS wrote trans lance like he invented the tag!! crystalklances i miss you and this was one of my favourite fics of yours

2. It's Not Spying If You Don't Call It Spying by @jilliancares

Turns out everyone is spying on Lance and Keith's blossoming relationship.

this is truly so goofy and silly and the team is SO so nosy and they need to be involved in 110% of klance's shit. as they deserve tbh. theyre all so annoying and i support all of their crimes

So, of course, that was when Hunk had said, "You know, it's really good that we're all friends here. I feel like it always gets awkward when two people in a group start dating, you know?" "Well, I don't think we have to worry about that with this group," Pidge had piped up, "I love you all, but there's no way in hell I'd date any of you." Everyone else had murmured their agreement, except for Lance and Keith, who had shared a look before trying to discreetly scoot away from the other. (Or, Lance and Keith decide to date in secret so their relationship doesn't make their teammates uncomfortable. It goes about as well as is to be expected.)

secret relationship you will ALWAYS be famous. its literally my favourite trope idc!! and this arc made SO much sense in terms of a reason for them to be dating in secret!! i loved how the team was the problem but that was very much not their intention but it made sense why klance was afraid and just...this whole fic was cinema truly i love it so so much

4. Of Pidge, Perception, and Prosecution by @erinnovelist

Of all the paladins, Lance knew Pidge was the one he had to watch out for. The only time her guard was down was after she woke up. She didn’t talk, glasses discarded after long hours staring at a screen, and she couldn’t function properly without her daily cup of coffee-equivalent alien juice. Which was why, when he wandered into the kitchen that morning, Lance hadn’t expected Pidge to zero in on him and ask, “When did you and Keith start fucking?”

teehee this one made me giggle its so ridiculous. and yes i did scroll thru the secret relationship tag again idc its so good!! i love the idea of klance thinking theyre so so sneaky and the whole time pidge is like yeah bitch ive been knew yall aint subtle in the slightest

5. Shifting Rock by @ohcontrary

Shiro is back with the team and things are... difficult, but getting easier. But even as he feels more and more like himself, he notices how his relationships have change. It's possible his relationship with Lance is changed irreparably. Luckily, the mission they go on gives them a chance to talk. But on a trip so perilous, they'll need to pay attention-- It isn't just their relationship that's on shaky ground.

lance and shiro NEEDED to talk fr. if ur gonna pretend the later seasons happened then they needed to CHAT. and what better place to chat then mortal peril and the threat of being crushed to death!! holy metaphors!!

AU: Sara is lead singer in a band called The Legends. Her band mates are; Charlie: Bass Player, Nate: Lead Guitarist, Zari: Drummer, Ray: Pianist. They call their fans beebos. Ava on the other hand is a famous actress with an entourage; Nora her best friend, and stylist, Gary: Manager, and Mona her publicist.

“Rise and shine!” Gary screams from the downstairs, the two are the only one that took care of themselves that night. “C’mon love birds.” Sara throws a pillow at the cuddling two. As well as Ray and Nora locking lips, Zari and Charlie made a mistake locking lips right in front of Gary as well as Sara but Sara already knew. 

After an 20 more minutes of Gary shouting and John singing they finally got everyone out of bed for some breakfast. 

Soon after breakfast the crew heads for their hike, it was a rather quiet first hour. Sara and Ava are up front leading the way, talking about god knows what while the others are behind them scheming. 

“Now that you two are settled, can we focus on those two.” Charlie points at the two blondes leading the way,

“Charlie, Ava needs time to heal” 

“And Sara--” Nate sighs knowing how much mending a broken heart is hard, but having had a pile of broken hearts after the other tends to wound an individual. 

“Need to heal as well,” Ray sighs

“Okay but you guys can’t tell me that last night they weren’t up on each other or vibing at all.” Mona coo’s looking ahead to see the two girls examining the trail 

“So what they’re friends, what if they are—“ Nate is cut off by the conversation the two girls are having up ahead. Ava is currently holding the map far from Sara’s reach, she’s using her butt as a shield.

“Just let me see it for one second.” Ava argues

“Why Miss-Know-It-All,” Sara teases bumping into Ava catching her in surprise letting her guard down. “You didn’t” Ava scoffs, but Sara took that opportunity to take the map and run away from Ava. 

“Are you kidding though.” Mona woo’s pointing at the two playing tag with one another

“Okay but they’ve been like that since the beginning of their friendship, they’re both extremely headstrong. Sara is extremely rebellious and from what I noticed Ava is a little controlling.” Nate explains following the two blonde girls still play fighting over the map 

“What’s wrong with him?” Gary mumbles, John shrugs taking out a cigarette as they follow, everyone starts to do the same but Nora puts her hand out to stop everyone else from walking. 

“Okay new plan, do we force them to be together, or do we let them heal properly and hope that they’ll get together?” Nora speaks up leaving Zari, Ray and Charlie stuck 

“Well clearly forcing them together isn't working out,” Ray starts 

“Exactly when we do that they seem to butt heads but—” Zari continues 

“When we leave them alone they come together naturally—”Charlie adds

“Which leaves us with the question again, do we keep forcing them together? Or do we let them heal—”

“Hey guys! C’mon the lake is up ahead!” Sara shouts summoning the last four to catch up to them. 

“Well Ava leaves in a month and you guys leave in 2. Which means everyone will be gone, and your tour is going to last what—?” Nora schemes as they slowly walk trying to create some space as they scheme 

“7 month at the most.” Ray informs 

“Which means we let fate decide?” Charlie questions

“That just may be our best bet.” Zari pulls Charlie to walk faster since everyone doesn't have a choice on what to do about the two. 

1 Hour Later...

“Who knew Mona Wu could cook?” Nora jokes as everyone is enjoying their lunch with some coffee, and tea. 

“Well if you guys actually came over for food every once in a while instead of going out to eat you’d actually see how I can cook.” Mona defenses rolling her eyes making everyone cackle. As they continue to eat Sara somehow sneaks away from the group, and of course Ava notices which means she follows. 

Nobody else notice the two girls sneak away. As Ava gets closer to Sara she whispers “Hey! Where are you going?” 

“Hey, stalker.” Sara chuckles continuing to her path, up a hill 

“I’m not a stalker, you just left and what if you get stuck or lost or something?” 

“Whatever floats your boat”

“So what are you doing exactly?” 

“Wanted a better view, better views give me better ideas, lyrics, melodies—”

“You’ve got writers block?” 

“Yup, and it’s killing me because it is literally the last song of the album and we’re suppose to record it when we get back into town Monday.” 

“Oh well then I’ll leave you alone—” There’s a pause, a part of Ava that wants Sara to ask her to stay but she can understand why the girl might want her alone time

“No wait, can I bounce things off of you?” Ava smiles before turning back around to Sara

“I’ll do my best—What do you got?” 

Sara takes her phone out and pulls up the instrument of her empty music.  The two sit for 6 minutes just trying to get the feel of the music. 

“First of all, I love the sound—do you have a concept?”

“I don’t know nothing is really connecting to me and the whole album is coming together but this song would take it to a whole ‘nother level”

“Alright let’s start with this what haven't you wrote about?” 

“Seriously?” 

“Seriously.” 

“A break up, I refuse. I’ll write about everything else but I don’t know I always feared that I’ll cry during one of the shows and crying is—”

“Disgusting—”Ava jokes

“Exactly but if thats’ the next best thing I’ll take it. So breaks up...break ups”

“How did your break up with Alex go? I know this is personal and might be a little too weird to talk about but—”

“No it’s okay, it was in the end of March and my ex girlfriend Alex broke up with me. She said that she felt lonely every time we were together because I was so busy with everything going on with my life. And she wasnt wrong—”

“Alright what made this break up hard?”

“She found somebody else, this amazing detective named Maggie Sawyer—I guess it hurt a lot because we were friends for 8 years then we dated and I just kind of assume we’d get married and do the whole house and kids thing but to be replaced so quickly hurt.”

“Do you want her back?”

“No I dont want her back but I hate thinking about her with somebody else.”

“Okay so let’s write about that mindset, you dont want her but you hate seeing her with his Maggie person.”

“That’s not bad, Sharpe. Not bad at all.”

30 minutes later

“Let’s hear it, Lance.” Ava runs back to Sara from going to the lake to meditate to hear what she’s got so far.

“Oi! Is everything okay?” Charlie waves at the two girls and the two pull away from one another

“I just finished the album you’ve got to hear it!” Sara kisses Ava’s cheek before running towards Charlie. Ava watches Sara making to Charlie, and she decides to sit down to think about what to do.

“What was that up there?��� 

“She helped finished the last song of the album which means I finished the album—”

“Sara—calm down, let us hear it then?”

Guess who was going through the Langst tag and got inspired and sad? 

Me. 

So Lance and Keith were friends in high school, but fell out of touch when Keith moved away for college. 

Half a year later, Keith moved back home after deciding college wasn't for him and dropping out. Lance was thrilled that one of his friends had moved back and reached out to his old friend to reconnect. Keith agreed and they went out to a bar together. 

They woke up in bed together the next morning with horrible hangovers and evidence of last night's deeds dried on the sheets. 

Keith tells Lance that he doesn't do relationships but that the sex was amazing and he would be up for it again if Lance was. 

Poor, pinning Lance has had feelings for Keith since high school. He figures that a friend's with benefits relationship is the best he was ever going to get with Keith and agrees. 

It becomes apparent that Keith was more interested in the Benefits part of their agreement very quickly. Sex was soon all he wanted from Lance, no hanging out, no talking, nothing but a few hours in bed. 

Lance is deeply hurt, feeling like he has lost one of his best friends all over again. He keeps trying to repair the friendship that he thinks he's at fault for breaking, but nothings working. 

If he invites Keith over for pizza and a movie, Keith thinks it's a booty call. They have sex and then Keith's gone. 

If he asks Keith to go to a bar or club with him, Keith gets handsy and they end up fooling around in one of their cars and then Keith goes home. 

Lance is at the end of his rope and pulling his hair out in frustration. Then he finds out that he isn't the only one Keith has been sleeping with. Turns out Keith's got a new guy in his bed every other night. 

Lance is heartbroken. He had thought he was the only one. He feels used. It’s like he doesn’t even know Keith anymore. He's lost Keith.

He can’t do it anymore. He can’t keep giving and giving himself to Keith for nothing.

He starts ignoring calls and texts from Keith. 

Hunk and Pidge worry and ask if he’s alright, but he just smiles and waves away their worries. It's hard for them to keep tabs on Lance when they have college classes and live in different states now, but they try their best.

 There are nights when he’s tempted to call Keith and invite him over because his bed is way to empty and he misses Keith like nothing else, but he manages.

Its around this time that his friend from college, Allura, introduces him to her friend since childhood, Lotor.

Lotor is hands down the most gorgeous guy Lance has ever seen. He was charming and just as flirty as Lance and laughed at his jokes. The two hit it off right away and Allura is so fucking smug because she’s been trying to set the two up for months.

They begin dating and Lance is honestly in awe of his boyfriend. Lotor seems perfect. Wealthy, handsome, charming, and loving. Lance is head over heels, stupidly in love.

Then Keith comes over to his apartment one night.

Keith asks him where he had been and why Lance hasn’t been answering his texts- he was worried!

Lance has no time for this. He’s blunt and harsh and tells Keith to go to someone else for sex, because Lance is dating someone now.

Keith goes pale. He tries to ask something, but keeps stuttering and restarting. Finally, he pushes past Lance and runs out of the apartment, leaving a confused Lance behind.

Things are going great with Lotor. Lance falls fast and hard and Lotor is right there with him. Lotor talks about Lance moving in with him and about their future together. Lance is so happy about the prospect of a future that he doesn’t stop to wonder if its what he really wants with Lotor.

Weeks after Keith’s last visit, he comes back drunk at 4 in the morning.

Lance lets him in, fully intending to call a taxi to take him home, but Keith has other plans. He’s throwing himself at Lance within minutes, asking him for just one more time.

Lance aint having that. Nope. It is not a thing that is happening.

Then Keith starts to cry. He keeps saying that he’s sorry and that he needs Lance and that he doesn’t care that Lance loves someone else. Says that he needs Lance, that he loves-

“Lance?” Lotor comes out of Lance’s bedroom still half asleep and hair a beautiful mess. He’s instantly awake when he sees Keith and his face goes dangerously blank. “Whats going on?”

Lance explains that he’s just calling a taxi to take Keith home, since he’s been drinking. Lotor’s face looses the blank look and he’s all sweet smiles and helpfulness again.

Keith curls up on Lance’s couch and tries not to cry.

After sending Keith home, Lance apologizes for waking up Lotor, but his boyfriend says he has nothing to be sorry for. Lance is sweet enough to help anyone, and Keith is in the wrong for taking advantage of that, that Lance did nothing wrong.

Lance is so lucky to have Lotor.

Keith wakes up to a text from Lance asking if he got home safe. Keith’s heart clenches, because he is so in love with Lance and he fucked up so badly.

He lies and pretends that he doesn’t remember going over to Lance’s place and humiliating himself because its easier.

The next day, Keith ventures out to get food and finds himself getting shoved into an alleyway between abandoned buildings and getting the shit kicked out of him.

He gets thrown around a bit, the wind knocked out of him, and a more then one bruise before he’s thrown to the ground.

Lotor and four girls are staring down at him once his head stops spinning.

Lotor tells Keith that if he tries to contact Lance again, the beating will be worse and a bone or two may be broken. Tells him that if he tries to tell Lance about this, Keith's landlord will suddenly find a reason to evict him from his apartment. 

Doesn’t Keith realize that he’s going to ruin Lance? That he’ll drag Lance down with him if Keith keeps holding onto him? He tells Keith that Lance deserves better then a college drop out turned slut whose going no where in life.

Keith already knows all this, he doesn’t need to reminder.

Keith is left in the alley with a split lip and bruised ribs while Lotor and the girls drive off in a sports car more expensive then Keith’s student debt.

I'm afraid to blog this bc I don't want Discourse. But I noticed most (not all) of the fans I know who ship Sha//ura are sweet black girls between the ages of 18-25. Meanwhile, most of the antis are bratty 13-15 y/o white kids. Yet they go on about how Sha//ura makes them uncomfortable on a Personal level because they're a minor "just like A//ura"? Pfft y'all couldn't be more different from A//ura so shut up. Just say you're racist & hate the concept of her being desirable to save your breath.

I cant say anything about anties because i honestly interact with them once a month if that , but I will say its funny to see people clammering about Shallura = antiblack while me and a handful of other black girl shippers are continuing to invest in the ship.

I literally had someone send me an article about fandom aging black characters up as if i have not been black my entire fucking life, and part of fandom for over half my fucking life. 

As if i have NOT watched fandom scramble to justify their horrible behavior, all while knowing it was only happening because no one cares about black characters. 

I mean I get to read post after post about Keith being troubled to the point of making that sacrifice and needing someone to care about him, but no one cares about Allura jumping infront of the bullet four times by now. Who thinks twice about Allura needing to be reminded of how essential she is in their lives? 

Its not like i sat through years of HP fanfic writers specifying that the Blaise in their fic was the beautiful delicate fanon Blaise, and not canon black Blaise. Because its totally necessary, even in a fic where Blaise is mentioned once every 5 fucking chapters, readers need to know its not actual Blaise Zabini because canon Blaise confuses them to the point of  disgust. 

or outrage when animophic characters from mostly black locations are drawn to be black instead of blond because that would make more sense with Nala having blue eyes and Simba’s red hair. 

It’s not like I watched horrible shit happen to black characters in tv shows with no sympathy or outcry, but a white girl gets yelled at for being a nuisance and the entire fandom is in the tags screaming for character death. 

Or ya know, black women being written out of their love stories and replaced with non-black characters. Because yea, yall love Allura and all that but something about her aint right so lets just literally edit her out of her scenes and give her back story to Lance .

here are my thoughts on the bullshit under the cut cuz it's gonna get long probs i assure you it’s a reassuring post:

ok so the interview itself wasn't bad to me honestly. jeremy did not deny the bi!lance hint, which was the most important thing to know. the fact that he said "that much i can say" implies that there's something left to know that he can't say because nda.

i'm gonna list a positive thing and a negative thing here: the negative one is that on one hand, it pisses me off that lgbt characters are treated as such a big spoilery deal when it should just....feel so natural to have them in a show. also thinking back that dreamworks tagged certain videos as klance just for views...well it's kind of a coward move if they don't at least end the show with lgbt rep. on the other, i really don't see the point with going all "no comment" about it if it weren't to happen?? that would be very assholey, and i know that the writers are not to be trusted, but the mere fact that they lie so much over things than then ended up being canon (e.g: galra keith, paladin allura, pidge being a girl etc) can't help but make me think they are pretty much hiding the endgame couple on purpose. you could argue they could be hinting at allurance which i'm not excluding bc some of the things could be honestly interpreted that way and also they never mention them ever as a couple except i remember like kimberly saying that allura isn't interested in lance (but she could be lying obviously) and jeremy here stating that lance has still a crush on her which is pretty evident and there's nothing new. (we also learned, according to him, that lance basically can dish it out but he can't take it which frankly...i can see pretty well as canon)

on that spectrum, pls note that this happening (or lance ending up with a girl for the matter) doesn't absolutely excludes bi!lance like at all. he can still be confirmed as bi and end up with a girl and that itself would still be very important! one thing doesn't exclude the other honestly so i say very confidently that lance being bi will be confirmed. like 100% convinced that it will. (do not forget lauren's drawing where lance is holding the lgbt sign, there's a specific reason he's the one holding that)

also does anybody think that....this stress over lance liking ladies and stuff is kinda....suspicious?? like jeremy himself was used to say "lol he flirts with anybody on two legs ahha" and now today all of a sudden he's putting a lot of stress on the ""woman"" part. which kind of threw me off? i might be reaching obviously, but mmm you know? and all of this comes after joaquim said "what he's looking for is getting to a place that might be different than when he started in the series" and “what he wants might not be what he needs” and if math isn't an opinion, he started the series always wanting allura so if what he wants is now changing..........................

it is also true that lauren used female pronouns in that interview and while that could be an indicator that lance will end up with a girl, it's also not set in stone bc.... they used to hide pidge's pronouns the same way and if lauren had said "him" you know that keith would have suddenly come to mind bc??? he's legit the only person lance has been paired up so much with. they've been sort of a duo ever since the beginning. and they've had most of the couple tropes out of all the possible pairings??? in the show??? allow me to list some. I'm too lazy to back this up with pics but like you know the scenes i'm talking about (and i also say this because when i ship something i ALWAYS look at canon interactions. and they have a lot):

the bonding moment (or the we are a good team scene if you will), which is not only visually very romantic (the purple lightning aka their two primary colors mixed together) but its sort of the turning point of their relationship and it's something that's very much used with couples especially with couples with their dynamic because oh lord!!!!!! do you know how many heterosexual couples exist with a dynamic like theirs? broody boy meets friendly girl and they're total opposites but ops they fall in love?? bitch literally every goddamn YA novel is like this. anyways, you know that scene would be considered romantic if it was between a boy and a girl, and indeed, allurance sort of paralleled that scene in s4 so if you consider that as romantic but not this one....well....buddy,,,,,,,they're basically in the same lions keith and lance were aka the fire and ice dynamic and if you can see that as romantic with a/l you should be able to see it the same way with....k/l but i digress).

as i was saying, the bonding moment is the turning point of keith and lance's relationship. after that we get:

1) an episode where keith is super anxious to have lance out of a pod and gets jealous when he sees lance flirting with allura, reminds him of their "bonding moment" and gets offended that lance doesnt remember (and an entire discussion could be open as to why he was so offended and the vlog kinda sets that up), overall the flirty banter that we're used to (not to mention this is the famous infamous bi flag planet)

2) a solo mission where they're shown to be working extremely well with each other (like classic battle couple duo scenes)

onto other tropes:

the subtle jealousy that can be interpreted both ways

THE ELEVATOR SCENE which is such a common trope for main couples!! they usually get stuck and have a moment of clarification or something like that. keith and lance's was a lot more comedic but it did lead them to collaborate in battle 2 seconds after so.... it did have an impact like those scenes usually do. (also that scene wasn’t necessary for the plot at all and yet...)

Lance making that fond face while talking about Keith that, may I remember you, was animated purposely to be that way. and overall there's a lot of subtle things like lance being constantly worried over keith in season 2 even though they didn't have much dynamic development??

the hey man scene? the fact that everybody was looking at lance EXPECTING HIM TO DO SOMETHING. and he could have easily looked back at them like "why me???" BUT NOPE, he was ready to go to comfort him!!!!!!!!

i get so worked up over the fact that so many of their scenes can be paralleled with other scenes as the story goes bc LETS BE FUCKING REAL FOR A GODDAM SECOND: they're the only pairing who started a way and are ending up in another. because they've had the most coherent development as a pairing in the seasons and we're fucking halfway through the show and when you also remember that it's pretty clear that lance wants to falls in love and that it's a ""slow burn""" kind of deal,,,,how in the fuck,,,,can it be other than klance??? literally nO OTHER PAIRING had a development since the goddamn start i’m not even saying this with my biased ass i’m saying this objectively speaking!!!!

all of season 3 could be a huge romantic trope honestly but like 2 scenes in particular strike as very romantic:

the leave the math to pidge scene obviously (the way it is framed is very tropey lmfao) and the way we see keith through lance's eyes.......pretty gay if you ask me

and the i got you buddy scene which someone made notice that AN EXACT SAME SCENE happens in the wonder woman movie but with a boy/girl pairing ofc. BUT IT'S THE SAME FUCKING SCENE THAT'S LIKE ROMANTIC TROPE 101 I AINT PLAYING

add on the fact that keith might have left team voltron to make sure lance had a place and boom. pretty romantic to me.

even if jeremy sees them as brothers....which is like...super fucking odd to me bc....he never mentioned this before almost like he's backtracking lololol, his opinion isn't...you know...canon. (and like lbr they never acted like brothers in the show??? and the creators never addressed them as such unlike...you know what) i like jeremy jokes and meme as much as the next guy but i'm a realist and i know that he doesn't really ship klance or anything he just knows how to spoiler the good stuff lolz but also he didn't say anything wrong like it's just how he sees it but the creators never said so (lauren montgomery called lance keith's stability don't forget that) and overall there are wayyyy too many hints to not believe that's its gonna be canon. like......it even makes sense with the overall story better than any other pairing?? because it's pretty plausible that lance had a crush on keith at the garrison that tried to mask with the rivalry. the way he acts and the way he tries to always get his attention furtherly proves that. it's a common thing to do when you have a crush lmao.

"Shit." I say shrugging.

He looks around. "Where Cammie? I thought she was with you."

I shake my head. "She in Virginia for a day."

"Not Atlanta?"

"Naw." I say frowning. "Why the fuck we still talking about Cammie?"

"Cause I came to talk to her thinking she was here."

I shake my head again. "She ain't. What the fuck you got so important that you couldn't ask her over the phone? Call her."

April laughs. "And why didn't you?"

angssstttttt. i can write angst for days. i just really love getting to explore darker themes, and dig deep into characters’ issues and flaws, whatever they may be. i’m just one of those people who has fun hurting my muses lmao. that said, i do love me some fluff too, i just find it harder to hold a thread sometimes.
