(May 12, 2023) We are raising money for a crowd funded research project investigating the cause of blueberry hermit crabs in Okinawa, Japan using trash found on the beach as “homes” instead of natural shells. These hermit crabs are endemic to the southern islands of Japan, and they act as coastal environmental engineers. They are endangered on several islands, and we want to try and understand why they are resorting to beach trash for shells. Please consider sharing this post and donating to the project. The fundraising will be active for the next 45 days (until June 26).

We suspect that areas with high rates of tourism lead to beach combers collecting natural shells leaving nothing for the hermit crabs to use. It’s possible that overfishing of turbo snails which would naturally provide shells for the crabs may also be a factor. We will survey many sites across several islands in Okinawa to try and determine a cause of this behavior. 

We will be working closely with national geographic photographer Shawn Miller (photo credits above) and several researchers in Japan. Additionally, we will complete extensive beach clean ups in the areas we study. Thank you so much for reading!

As you lay in bed you feel a hand move lightly over your hip as it lands at your arm. The mattress sinking with his weight. With all his might he gently moves his hips till they meet yours, moving oh so slightly as to not wake you. (Jokes on him, you're already awake but don't move to give yourself away)

The slight tickle of his hot breath adds to your neck. It doesn't irritate just make your chest cave harder. A slight moan escapes his lips as he rests his head. You bite your lip. As your body temperature rises you stay steady. His thumb goes back and forth on your arm in one little spot. He does this absently when he's content.

A slight smile curves your lips, you bet he'd been thinking about this all day.

All that Foggy hears is someone frantically saying, “Kiss me,” before he makes eye contact with an objectively hot guy and kisses him first. The guy backs him up against the nearest tree and they make out for about a minute before the guy backs up.

“We could have stopped that like forty five seconds ago,” the guy says, breathlessly, patting Foggy's arm, “but you're an extremely good kisser, dude. Gentle but firm, somehow. Props for that.”

“Thanks,” Foggy says, laughing. “Are you going to explain what just happened? Did you suddenly get hit with the need to kiss someone and I was the closest person? I'm Foggy, by the way.”

“Shawn Spencer,” Shawn says, “and I'll have you know that I am extremely discerning about the people I kiss to hide myself from the very large men who chase me because they think I cheated at poker games that I actually won because I have a keen sense of observation and, also, natural charm.”

Foggy takes a second to process that sentence.

“Are you implying that you're chased by large men frequently?” he asks.

“I live a wayward life, Foggy,” Shawn says. “I'm a nomad. A vagabond. Frequently unemployed. So, I occasionally sneak into high stakes poker games to keep food in my belly and gel in my hair. The essentials.”

“You seem. . .very interesting,” Foggy says, slowly.

“You have the softest hair I've ever had the honor of touching,” Shawn says, reaching up to tuck Foggy's hair behind his ear which is stupidly charming, “and a truly stunning smile. What do you say we ride this moment out as long as we can? Coffee? Laser tag? Gay sex?”

“Let's. . .start with coffee,” Foggy says, grinning and letting Shawn throw an arm around him as they walk. “See how it goes.”

“How did you know I was into guys?” Foggy asks, when they're tucked away in the corner of a small coffee shop.

“Oh, I didn't,” Shawn says. “You just had a kind face that also said ‘strong ally or a Kinsey two and a half,’ so I figured you probably wouldn't punch me, at least. Then you kissed me, y’know, the way that you did, and blushed when I touched your hair. Adorable, by the way.”

Foggy blushes again, shaking his head when Shawn beams at him.

“Adorable,” he repeats. “So, laser tag?”

“Or gay sex,” Foggy says.

“I'd be interested in exploring a hybrid of both,” Shawn says, warmly, “but I'll admit, the second one sounds—oh, shit.”

He grabs a pen from Foggy's messenger bag and scrawls out a phone number on a napkin before giving Foggy a firm kiss, saying, “Please call me,” and jumping over the table to run out of the coffee shop.

School Shootings that happened the same year as Columbine.(specifically, in united states.)

Central High School Suicide Shooting Pact.

On January 8, 1999, a suspected suicide pact shooting took place at the school. Students Andrea Garrett and Jeff Miller were found shot in a girls bathroom with a .22-caliber pistol nearby. Garrett was taken to the nearby Tanner Medical Center where she was shortly pronounced dead. Miller meanwhile was airlifted to Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. He died a day later. An investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office pointed to an intended suicide plan with Central High students recalling Garrett speaking of suicide weeks before. The sheriff's office also concluded the pistol belonged to Andrea's parents and speculate a scenario where Miller shot Garrett before turning the gun on himself due to the weapon being found nearer his body.

Notus Junior High School Shooting.

A teenager (Shawn Cooper) who fired two shots inside Notus Junior-Senior High School with a shotgun he wrapped in a blanket and carried from home on the school bus was described as mentally disturbed. No one was seriously injured, but teachers barricaded themselves in a lounge and school administrators hurriedly evacuated students across an open field as the teen stalked the foyer.He blasted the floor outside the principal's office and soon afterward blew a 3-inch hole in a steel gymnasium door, narrowly missing three students. Teachers saw him reloading the shotgun after firing the shots, and deputies later found three live shells in the gun.

Heritage High School Shooting.

15-year-old student Thomas "T.J." Solomon Jr. wounded six students at Heritage High School. A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition, and the other victims suffered from non-life-threatening injuries. Solomon initially faced up to 351 years of prison if convicted of aggravated assault and other charges. In 2000, he was found guilty but mentally ill and was sentenced to 40 years in prison and 65 years of probation.

Deming Middle School Shooting.

13-year-old Victor Cordova Jr. fatally shot 13-year-old Deming Middle School schoolmate Araceli Tena. Cordova said he had intended to commit suicide but was jostled by others and his gun moved. He could not be charged as an adult as he was under 14, so he received the maximum sentence for a juvenile: a minimum of two years in prison, with a maximum of being held until his 21st birthday. In December 2003, he was released to his aunt and uncle to live with them in Colorado.

Fort Gibson Public School Shooting.

On December 6, 1999, 13-year-old middle school student Seth Trickey shot four classmates with a Taurus PT92. 12-year-old Savana Knowles, was shot near her right ear, the slug exited without hitting vital organs. 13-year-old Billy Railey, was shot in his right leg. 13-year-olds Cody Chronister and Brad Schindel were also wounded. Another student received slight bruising. The victims were taken to area hospitals, there were no fatalities.

The makeup effects for John Landis' prologue segment and George Miller's 'Nightmare at 20'000 Feet' segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie were handled by Craig Reardon.

For the prologue, Reardon applied a makeup on Dan Aykroyd, inspired both by his unused head prop on 'Poltergeist', as well as Lon Chaney's makeups in London After Midnight and Phantom of the Opera.

For 'Nightmare', to realize the gremlin suit Reardon worked with Michael McCracken, with some assistance from Michael Shawn McCracken @michaelshawnmccracken and Reardon's own parents (his mother applied the quills on the gremlin suit)

Larry Cedar wore the gremlin suit, suspended by a harness. There was cable controlled mechanisms inside the gremlin's head, which was modeled after a red-faced monkey at George Miller's suggestion.
