FFXIV Write 2024 Prompt#9 : Lend an Ear

The height-blessed Elezen settled back into the chair he’d been sitting in before the Duskwight lady had entered. He stared down at the table to where a book had been sitting. It had been old, but he’d seen old tomes. He’d restored some older, some in far worse condition, through the tender loving care of his delicate touch and knowledge of his years. The difference between then and now was that he was allowed to touch them.

This lady, Sionne Devereux as she called herself, had been .. taken advantage of? Made a fool of? Something unpleasant, by a Sharlayan. Which, of course this Elezen and his wife both were. She was afraid. So very afraid of him touching the manuscript. A fear that he wanted it for himself? Well. There was a truth that of course, though it would not happen. THIS Sharlayan, along with his wife, had declared that the keeping of knowledge to themselves only (Themselves being the Motherland of Sharlayan of course, and its peoples) was a travesty and a tragedy. A travesty of what brilliant minds should act like. A tragedy to those who could learn from such knowledges were they to not be held and hidden. No, he and his wife Vianne were not the usual betwixt the Scholars and Masters of their homeland peers.

He would not, under any circumstances, take of that which was not given. It made no matter how fascinating the knowledge may be, and this was works that had lived below ground by the peoples of Gelmorra. Her Duskwight kin. While the one she showed appeared only to be a ledger of some sort, it was clearly written in a different language than one he’d seen used so in his past. Of course there were similarities to the ancient elezen tongues, though just enough differences that in the short time he’d flickered his eyes over the pages, he could not translate it.

While that made him sad, it was not that which made him the most pensive. It was the behaviour of the woman. She didn’t, not for one ilm, allow herself to warm up to him. It was all business and wariness. He wondered… perhaps his wife would be able to help with the restoration. Though, more to the point, her hesitations toward him seemed stronger. Something beyond just the woes of his being Sharlayan. It might be worth it for his wife to lend an ear to the skittish Duskwight. Sometimes a woman simply needed the understanding of another woman.
