Reading the Sixth Astral Era timeline in Encyclopedia Eorzea really puts a lot of things into perspective for me. Like I knew the Calamity happened in 1572, but actually reading the timeline of major events in Eorzea really forces you to conceptualize how fucking long that is.

For one thing: the last Calamity was 1500 years ago? For the average person that might as well be Biblical times. No wonder people didn't believe it would happen again. You might as well be telling them Noah's flood is going to happen again next month.

For another: it puts a lot about Sharlayan in perspective when you realize that a) it was one of the first city-states to be established after the Calamity of Water flooded most of Eorzea, and b) the territory Archon Nyunkrepf and his followers settled seems to have been largely uncontested. Within 600 years they were figuring out how to build aetherytes. Meanwhile, the Elezen who settled Coerthas were fucking around and finding out with the dragons; Gelmorra and Belah'dia wouldn't be built for another century; Limsa Lominsa wouldn't be settled for more than another century after that. Thanalan, La Noscea, and the Black Shroud would all be mired in territorial disputes for hundreds of years after that, some of which persist into the present-day.

It's not that the Sharlayans are uniquely smarter or intrinsically value learning more than anyone else, imo, it's just that it's a lot easier to put resources into scientific study and build stable institutions of learning and knowledge collection when you've never really had to prioritize military strength because you don't have a neighboring nation trying to kick your shit in every other week. And it also makes sense that they subsequently balk when pressed to join a military alliance, because that is not the resource their society is built to offer.

Eating a Mirror Apple they stole from the Gleaners and having a sugar crash.

The Ball Dance is the haughtiest move on the floor.

Making Alphinaud shotgun a glass of orange juice.

Cold Spaghetti in a juice bowl.

Alphinaud bitches out and Alisaie crushes it, smashing the glass on the floor.

"Dude, you are such a pussy for not letting that witch turn you into a frog."

G'raha Tia is caught snooping in the private archives (not part of the party, a serious crime).

They're forming a circle around a Lopporit doing the Lop Hop to The Nautilus Knoweth (PULSE Remix).

The Forumn is too busy debating on charging the kids for stealing an apple to even bother with G'raha's repeat offenses.

The kids are partaking in Zodiark's Lettuce (It's Gaelicatnip and none of them are Miqo'te).

No guards are ever called, they scatter in an orderly manner when the campus mammets tell them to keep the noise down.

something that interests me about final fantasy xiv's setting is that sharlayan has no guards.

every single other city-state in the game has a guard contingent with its own name, excepting only post-7.0 solution nine. sharlayan simply... doesn't have guards. my lorebooks are packed right now so i can't check if they have one in lore, but they definitely don't exist in game. the only "guard" is really just... the lalafell at the docks handling customs. there aren't even guards at the bottom of labyrinthos!

it's an interesting setting note. sharlayan is isolated and really only faces outside threats from land and air; it doesn't border a zone full of dangerous wildlife (labyrinthos notwithstanding), so it doesn't seem to need patrols for that. i actually do wonder what, if any, fighting force sharlayan does have, considering it is mostly an island of mages and academics.
