A delicious light meal of lightly cured ocean trout, local calamari, fried buttermilk chicken and a bowl of fries in air conditioned comfort paired with their Morganite coloured rose. Highly recommend trying the tasting paddles and sampling the beautiful wines from hosts, Avanelle and Will. Inside there is a welcoming fire, comfortable couches, tables & chairs. The winery produces wines under 2 labels: Bellarine Estate & Portarlington Ridge. For wine tasting you choose a paddle of 6. Their Thirty Acres Gin is made from the winery’s own grapes. A selection of cocktails is available. The lovely staff are very knowledgeable about the wines, gin & food. The menu has the traditional offerings of charcuterie, cheeses & wood fired oven pizza. There are also options from the Smoker. The meats are smoked on the premises & the sauces home made. Absolutely delicious! Alas, no wine dogs were espied. iJewels, For the Gem of Your Eye, returned to #curlewiswinery on the spur of the moment last weekend. If you’re looking for somewhere to go on a dreary cold and wet Saturday afternoon we highly recommend the small and beautiful Curlewis Winery at 55 Navarre Road, Curlewis, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Warm yourself in the cellar door with the blazing fire, a wine tasting and some delicious food. Whilst they are known for their Pinot Noir, the Pinot Noir vines are amongst the oldest on the Bellarine Peninsula, they make a fabulous Syrah and the very unique Charneis, a blend of Chardonnay and Arneis, an Italian varietal. Stefano and Leesa have a unique wine tasting of 6 wines in test tubes. Lovely food including beautiful olives and yummy small pizzas, platters and bao buns and other nibbles. This came up as a blast from the past. In January 2019 we spent a couple of days in the Coonawarra wine region. On a 48 degree Celsius day we met a lovely lady at one of the wineries. She had a gorgeous sapphire and diamond engagement / wedding ring. She’d worn it for many years and thought it needed a bit of a makeover. She had been to a few jewellers who either tried to sell her 2 new diamond set band style rings or insisted that they had to take the whole ring apart and remake it. Nick disagreed and said it was simple to update her ring. He blinged up her ring by setting diamonds into the existing gold and giving it a good clean and polish at a fraction of the cost of new rings or a complete remake. She was over the moon with the end result. If there is enough metal an update to an existing piece doesn’t have to cost a lot. iJewels, for the Gem of Your Eye, was recently at #thedunesoceangrove for a birthday lunch on a lovely warm autumn afternoon. Prosecco started the celebration with entrees of delicious warm olives and spicy southern fried chicken. Jen happily enjoyed her rare porterhouse steak with chips and a beautiful béarnaise sauce whilst Nick enjoyed the spiced roasted cauliflower. A Wattletree brownie that wasn’t too sweet was shared for dessert. In between courses we watched the surfers catching waves and the ships heading into Port Phillip Bay. Continuing our theme of the birthstone of the month and alternative gemstones for April we feature these gorgeous Australian zircons, also known as ‘Australian Hartsite’, from the Harts Range in the Northern Territory. What is particularly special about these gems and this ring is that it is 100% Australian made. Nick bought the rough zircon crystals from the fossicker. Jen loved her rare porterhouse steak with chips and a beautiful béarnaise sauce whilst Nick enjoyed the spiced roasted cauliflower. A Wattletree brownie that wasn’t too sweet was shared for dessert. In between courses we watched the surfers catching waves and the ships heading into Port Phillip Bay. iJewels, for the Gem of Your Eye, was recently at the new restaurant on the North Bellarine Peninsula @claribeaux at the Curlewis Golf Club #curlewisgolfclub for a birthday dinner. The menu has a French influence. Starters of French Onion Soup were simply divine. Many years ago I worked in a French Restaurant with a French Chef and developed an appreciation for French Onion Soup. Claribeaux’s version was the closest I’ve encountered to that of my youth. Our mains were Chicken Cordon Bleu and Herb Crusted Double Lamb Cutlet & Crispy Lamb Belly. Both delicious and filling. We shared a dessert of Cherry Clafoutis, essentially a baked custard with cherries and a side serve of cream for me and ice cream for Nick. Magnificent! The restaurant is new as are the staff who were professional, efficient and very helpful with recommendations from the menu. A most enjoyable birthday evening with a beautiful view across the green golf course and the sunset. The Whiskery offers 5 beautiful gins, 2 whiskeys, an extensive cocktail list, a huge selection of whiskeys, a small selection of Bellarine wines, beers and ciders along with pizzas and a delicious platter and live music on Sunday afternoons. A fabulous place to while away a couple of hours. In keeping with the theme of alternative colourless gems for April as a substitute for the ubiquitous Diamond, iJewels featured a Danburite solitaire ring and a Czernity ring. Danburite is a little known gem but is nonetheless available at a fraction of the cost of equivalent sized Diamonds. It is considered to be a collectors gem and can also be found in shades of yellow. With a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs Hardness scale it is suitable as a ring stone. We are able to source Danburite if you are interested in something different and unique. The Czernity ring is the world’s first faceted eternity ring made entirely from cubic zirconia.
