I feel like in the world of HP lovecraft, amongst the big names like cthulhu, azathoth, yog-sothoth and the infamous nyarlathotep. No one even mention Nodens-the Lord of the great abyss. Cuz that dude sole purpose is to piss off Nyarlathotep. He’s a good elder god for this sole reason (even in ancient britain he depicted as a healing god).
Let me explain
As an Elder God. Nodens' behavior is generally quite kind towards humans, but he only acts this way when he is at odds with Nyarlathotep. Of course, because Dream World is a battlefield and Nyarlathotep and Nodens' war is a proxy war. That's when Nyarlathotep tried every way to stop the travelers from searching for the Kadath desert, Nodens was willing to find every way to protect them, that's how he indirectly angered Nyarlathotep without directly confronting him. Nodens' servants are the Nightgaunts. According to some sources in the Canon, Nodens enjoys hunting animals in places like the Underworld, his targets include Shantak, Hunting Horror and moon beasts.
•Proxy war
When humanity began to spread and explore every corner of the Earth. The Great Ones eventually sought new settlements in Dreamland, including the fortress of Kadath. Nodens himself has quite good relationships with the Grand Masters, and he sometimes monitors Kadath's surroundings to prevent humans from threatening them. Nyarlathotep himself is the same, but Nyarlathotep's main job in Dreamland is to enforce the will of the blind fool and the other supreme foreign gods of the center. Filled with vulgar complaints, with the demon king's will, Nyarlathotep wished for the gods of earth to be protected from human encroachment.
In general, the goals of Nyarlathotep and Nodens are the same. But that didn't mean Nodens had to be friendly with the foreign gods, so he continuously committed acts of sabotage against Nyarlathotep at DreamWorld. And Nyarlathotep felt uncomfortable with Nodens, which was quoted by Randolph Carter when he spoke to Nyarlathotep at Kadath. Nodens is considered a counterpart to Nyarlathotep in Lovecraft's works, but he is not friendly towards humans, he only saves them and is kind to them when he wants to oppose Nyarlathotep, inciting the wrath of Nyarlathotep. those who are considered God... an Outer God.
Basically chaotic good vs chaotic evil
#hp lovecraft#hp lore#cthulhu mythos#nyarlathotep#nodens#lovecraft nyarlathotep#lovecraft nodens#the crawling chaos#lord of the great abyss#one of my favortite rivalry in hp lovecraft lore#nyarlathotep is basically azathoth intelligence so in a way nodens always beefing with azathoth indirectly#god whos want to fuck everything up vs god who just want to fuck the said god up#do you guys see how funny this dynamic is#they have the same goal but that does not mean that they have to get along#meaning this is just a hate-tolerate relationship#hpl shitposting

𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐎 & 𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐓 @multipleoccupancy
Ada Briante. Violet had never heard of such a name, which made sense, as she wasn't from this timeline anyway. She knew of an Ada, Ada Lovelace, one of her favourite inventors. So, she couldn't help but think that this Ada Briante lady sounded quite interesting. "It's real nice that she took care of you while your parents were away," she smiled, trying to picture a young Theo, wild and reckless (and riding Shantak). She could imagine this Ms. Briante had her work cut out for her.
"She liked traps too?" While this wasn't too unusual around here, where monsters were rampant and people relied on traps for survival, she was still excited about it. Traps had become something of special interest of hers, even more so these past few months.
Violet chuckled happily. "You'll be givin' me ideas," she teased him, "now I know I can just pretend to act up and I'll get a story." She was joking, of course. Violet didn't need to do anything to get stories. Stories were a part of their evening routine, now. If there was a campfire around, she was getting stories! "Did you do a lot of dangerous things when ya' were young? Like ridin' that Shantak?"
Theo smiled as Violet took his bait on the offer of a story, "her name was Ada Briante, she seemed to know every trick in the book when it came to keepin' me in line." He chuckled fondly and smiled into the fire thoughtfully. "Ma and Pa had to go look after my grandpa who lived in a town called Rochester in upstate New York, they thought it was too dangerous for me to go with them, I was only young. So I was left in the town under the care of a man named Vernon but he died to a monster attack the same day my parents left." Theo scratched the back of his neck for the memory but he had not really known Vernon all that well. "Ada happened to be comin' through the town and caught me livin' by myself and kept an eye on me."

He chuckled for her question on the stories Ada had told him, trying to think back on them as best he could, they were told to him a long time ago. "She told me countless stories, how she faced so many monsters, she was real keen on traps too you know. You'd have got along." He nodded her way playfully and smiled a little brighter. "Her stories were so good that when I was bored I would pretend to act up just so she would sit an' tell me a story while she thought she was distractin' me from doin' whatever dumb thing I was plannin'" which he confessed fondly. "I was a handful."
Pleased that Violet was starting to understand the value in stories and the therapeutic chance it gave to talk about them in a different light to scare off the worst of the details and to turn them on their head to be better than the reality. He hoped she would tell more of her stories, at least so she could face what had happened and not let them sit in her head unchecked.

Seugathi and Shantak in the 13th Age
The seugathi are spawned creations from mysterious creatures that live deep in the Underworld. Wormlike and bestial in appearance, with three part hooked jaws and a ring of eyes round their mouth, they are actually quite cunning and intelligent, capable of finding and making use of weapons and magic items in their twin tails. These tails have the dexterity and control to wield a variety of weapons, and seugathi can innately connect with any kind of want or other magical implement, unlocking the abilities of even the most stubborn or reluctant true magical item. Whatever the seugathi's masters are, they implant their progeny with a number of missions and instructions to follow out, and so far no seugathi has been found that was able to ignore or resist these orders. Upon completion of these missions or an attempt to abandon them completely, the seugathi immediately dies, erasing a risk to the master's secretive plans, and so the seugathi are routinely sent on extremely dangerous or even suicidal missions, seemingly in the hopes that eventually they will find success against even the most impossible challenge.
Seugathi occasionally work together when seeking to achieve the same mission, but more often they will attempt to find other agents to cause chaos and distractions while they make their way to their original goal. Many have small stashes of treasure and magical gear to use as bribes and rewards for these jobs.
Seugathi 4th level spoiler [large aberration] Initiative: +9 Poisoned Bite +8 vs. AC – 8 damage. Natural Even Hit: The target takes a -1 penalty to MD (save ends). Each failed save, the penalty increases by 1, to a maximum of -4. Lashing Shortsword +8 vs. AC (2 attacks) – 6 damage. C: Aura of Madness +6 vs. MD (1d3 nearby enemies) – The target is dazed (save ends). Natural 16+: The target is confused instead of dazed (save ends). Quick Use: 1/round, as a quick action. Confusion Command: 1/round, as an interrupt action when a nearby enemy is confused and starts its turn, the seugathi can decide which creature the confused enemy targets. Resist Psychic 16+. AC 19 PD 16 MD 17 HP 50 Nastier Special Magic Item Use: One seugathi in the battle has a magic wand, holy symbol, or staff. It gains a bonus to its aura of madness attack rolls equal to the bonus on that item.
Shantak are massive creatures, larger than an elephant but surprisingly light and slim for their size. With two clawed legs, a long whipping tail, and massive, leathery wings, they look like scaled and slimy bats, but are more intelligent than such creatures and capable of both speech and diplomacy. Their most significant feature however is their ability to fly to the Overworld, and pass through it with incredible speed. So long as the shantak knows where its destination is, it can reach most destinations within 3d20 hours, though the deepest reaches of the Overworld may take up to 3d20 days. This ability makes stantak highly sought after as mounts, something they are not well suited for personality wise. They are stubborn and obstinate, and if not properly mollified and pampered have a tendency to abandon riders in isolated locations. It is always best to try and have a backup travel plan when one is relying on a shantak. If space is accessible in your Dragon Empire, then shantak are able to fly through it as well with similar pace to its Overworld flight.
Interestingly, despite their size and somewhat ferocious nature, shantak are actually quite reluctant to fight, and often carry a number of irrational fears. Many panic at the sight of gargoyles or harpies, as well as some other winged humanoid beings, and so shantak in the Dragon Empire tend to stick to really isolated regions that lack any of the creatures they fear.
Shantak 5th level mount [huge beast] Initiative: +7 Jaws +10 vs. AC – 15 damage. Miss: 5 damage. Claw Strike +10 vs. AC (2 attacks) – 8 damage and the shantak can choose to pop free from the target. Flyer. Mount: The shantak can have up to five medium or smaller creatures as its mount. Each round the shantak can choose to act on its own turn, or during one of its rider’s turns. No Breath: The shantak doesn’t need to breathe, and so is immune to any effect that would require breathing (GM’s call). Share Defenses: The shantak’s riders share its resist cold 18+ and no breath traits. Slippery: The shantak and any of its riders gain a +5 bonus on saves against being stuck, and on disengage checks to escape being grabbed. Resist Cold 18+. AC 21 PD 17 MD 16 HP 80

Fruitwood-Grilled Shantak Moa Drumettes

Cooked using the flesh of extraterrestrial monsters defeated by the chef of Spices Supreme. Shantak moas are inherently ferocious creatures, and while some people use them as mounts to traverse the icy vacuum, the cost is sacrificing their own limbs as sustenance for the creatures.

Ghostbusters: Port Huron (Episode 30)
Episode 30: Ithaqua
Eric, Jeremy, Amber and Bryan jogged through the snow to the edge of the Boardwalk. None of them were certain what to expect, but they knew they’d face it together. The dark shape in the snowstorm loomed over them, and they could hear the water of the St. Lawrence River crash around its legs.
“He’s big,” Amber commented dryly.
“He’s hunched over,” Jeremy noted.
“Hell, even Bryan could hit this guy,” Eric grinned.
“Here’s hoping,” Bryan said. “Everyone ready?”
Three Proton Packs answered his question as the thrummed to life. He smiled and activated his own. “Remember,” he said, “don’t look it in the eyes, and crossing the streams is absolutely prohibited.”
“Left arm,” Amber called out, opening fire into the gloom.
“Right leg!” Eric shouted before following suit.
“Headshot!” Jeremy grinned, throwing his own beam.
“Center mass then,” Bryan shrugged, firing as well.
The shape recoiled as the beams struck it, and a long-fingered hand the size of a sedan came sailing out of the snow, slamming down on the Boardwalk and crushing the railing and concrete like Styrofoam. Sickly pink flesh under stark white spikes of hair flexed and gripped as the shape leaned toward them and the head came into view.
In works of fiction, the description of a Great Old One can boil down to a kind of literary progressive insanity. Words and imagery are used to conjure the idea of terrifying, unknowable cosmic entities and impress this upon the reader without actually committing to details in any concrete way so as to let the reader’s imagination run wild. After all, YOU are the best judge of what YOU find strange, disturbing, or terrifying.
In the flesh, however, Ithaqua’s balding head of mottled pink skin had two brightly burning yellow orbs looking out of eye sockets, a sunken nose almost fifteen feet tall in and of itself, and a gaping maw that seemed to sink all the way through the throat and into the creature’s torso, creating a cave of flesh and teeth from which came a thunderous roar and a wind more bitter than any earthly cold a human being could hope to imagine.
The Ghostbusters turned their backs first to avoid eye contact and secondly to brace against the wind. “He is UGLY!” Eric shouted as they took off running as a unit, away from the bridges and the other hand of the Old One as it came down like a meteor where they had been standing, smashing the entire portion of the Boardwalk to dust.
Amber’s vision began to tunnel as she ran, pushing herself hard despite her injuries. She’d pushed through this before in the Air Force, and she wasn’t about to let it get the better of her now. Jeremy, equally banged up, was having a harder time, and Eric and Bryan turned to fire at Ithaqua again to give their teammates time to catch up. Their beams carved black lines into Ithaqua’s chest as the Old One shifted its weight in the river and swung at them again. “Down!” Bryan shouted, and they all dove for the ground as that disgusting hand swept just a hair’s length over them.
From the ground, Eric fired into Ithaqua’s outstretched hand, causing the alien god to recoil the limb. It moved with an odd slowness, but up close it was clear it was moving much faster than the Ghostbusters would be able to avoid for long.
They scattered as the other hand came down, this one driving a deep crater into the ground. “Dr. Stantz!” Bryan shouted into his radio, “Any day now!”
“We need more time!” Ray replied. “We’ve got Shantaks all over us!”
Ithaqua’s tremendous form loomed over the four of them again. “Oh shit!” Jeremy shouted as the creature screamed again, this time seemingly vomiting freezing sleet down on them. They tried to scream, but couldn’t even hear themselves over the downpour, soaking quickly through their thick coats and gloves in an unnatural way.
But another proton beam lanced out of the blizzard and struck Ithaqua in one of his bright eyes, and the staccato report of machinegun fire announced the arrival of the National Guard. Remy, standing on top of one of the rapidly approaching Humvees, tried to keep his beam steady on the Old One’s face, and the creature recoiled again, giving the team a chance to stand up and start moving again. The Humvee slide to a halt nearby and they ran for it, jumping onto the back and eric slapping the roof. “Go go go!” he shouted.
With frightening speed, Ithaqua was on top of them, one disgusting hand slamming down just behind them and causing the Humvee to jump. Remy fired again, catching the monster’s arm, but the other hand was already coming down in front of them. The Humvee’s driver tried valiantly to avoid it, but in the snow, there wasn’t enough traction on the tires. The windshield exploded and bodies went flying as the vehicle crashed into the Old One’s hand.
Eric was the first on his feet. “Ow,” he groaned, looking up and trying to determine where the next swipe would be coming from. Bryan managed to get his feet under him as well. “You okay?”
“I’m going to live, and I’m going to hate it,” Bryan responded.
“Where’s-“
The hand reached down from out of the storm and grabbed the Humvee in its entirety. The man in the driver’s seat screamed as he and his vehicle soared into the sky in its grip.
“Oh shit,” Eric squeaked.
“Remy?” Amber’s voice came, strained and tired. “Remy where are you?”
There was a cough. “Still alive, mon cheri.”
“Gross,” Jeremy grunted. He propped himself up as Bryan and Eric ran to his side. “Nope. I’m not standing up again.”
“You’ve got to, we need to move-“ Bryan said.
“Nope,” Jeremy cut him off. “I think I’d rather just bite it here if its all the same to you.”
“It isn’t.” Eric told him.
“Too bad,” the big man told him, holding his nuetrona wand in both hands. “Where’d big and ugly go?” There was another burst of machinegun fire somewhere in the distance and another of Itaqua’s soul-shaking screams. “Oh, good, the army’s here.”
“Dr. Stantz? Any progress?” Bryan tried on the radio again as Amber and Remy, supporting each other, joined the group.
There was a moment of silence before the radio responded, in Kelly’s voice “Dr. Stantz is currently getting fished out of the lake.”
“How is your end of it going, Kelly?”
“Hell if I know, you people don’t tell me anything!” There was a noise and a brief burst of static before Jason’s voice replaced Kelly’s. “The Shantaks are gone for now, but I think they’re going to be back. Mr. Kaye is on a boat with Dr. Stantz’s device.”
“Where’d he get a boat?” Eric asked.
“Hey, I helped build it too!” Jeremy whined simultaneously.
“Just a little bit longer,” Bryan nodded.
And then Ithaqua attacked again. Both long, gangly and powerful hands came down, each clutching a different vehicle and smashing it against the earth. Eric and Bryan fired with Jeremy joining in from the ground, but Ithaqua didn’t seem to care this time. It bent over them, bringing its face down to scream at them again.
“Eric!” Jeremy shouted, “catch!”
Where he had it, Eric wouldn’t have been able to tell you, but Jeremy threw him the Proton Gauntlet. Amber and Remy opened fire, still leaning against each other as Eric switched out the wand for the gauntlet. The great head of Ithaqua split its maw wide, wider than any creature of flesh and blood would be able to manage, and the storm bellowed out of its gaping jaws once more.
In the unworldly cold of the sleet and deafening noise of the scream, Eric brought the gauntlet online, glanced briefly upward, and lunged.
Ithaqua recoiled, its scream changing from one of rage to confusion and pain and… maybe even panic? Eric, now high above the world with a death grip on the Old One’s upper lip, or whatever passes for one in those circles, screamed his own vengeful, triumphant shout as Ithaqua thrashed wildly in the river.
Now above the worst of the storm, Eric had a moment of stillness where he saw everything. Mr. Kaye frantically steering his boat back toward shore, the floating device falling into the rift beneath the bridges, and the resulting flash of light, small at first but growing in intensity.
It was like the big bang in reverse. The snow, the Shantaks in the sky, Ithaqua itself began to be sucked into the rift, back through the Gate. Realizing what was happening, Eric let go of the Old One and plummeted through the air and into the river.
Without ceremony or sound, all of the matter that had come through the Gate was sucked back into it. Total protonic reversal. There was a brief second of total silence, and then a deep, thrumming explosion with a shockwave that could be seen in the water of the river as a huge wave. Bryan, Remy and Amber all fell down from the force of the Gate’s collapse, but Bryan shot back to his feet just as quickly and sprinted to the edge of the water.
Hacking and coughing, Eric surface a good hundred feet down river, his shorted out and disabled Proton Gauntlet gripping one of the Boardwalk’s small ladders. Bryan ran down to help him out of the water and over the railing, and the two of them collapsed onto the sidewalk.
“Nice move,” Bryan managed through gasping breaths.
“That was the stupidest thing I have ever done and will ever do,” Eric coughed his promise, still spitting up water.
Bryan’s radio sprang to life with Mr. Kaye's voice. “Is everyone alive?”
“Yeah, boss,” Bryan replied after a moment of fumbling with the device. “Everyone’s alive.”

Lovecraft and animals, Part 11: Horses - The Shantak Birds, which are somewhat like reverse hippogryphs in aspect are featured in THE DREAM QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH. These creatures - used only by the extremely bold for transportation - have the heads of horses and the bodies of an eagle. Instead of feathers they are covered in scales. Of the more normal animals of Lovecraft's Dreamland used for transportation - at least in the Southern regions - is the zebra. The fact that zebras are both black and white might have had some symbolic significance for HPL. BIRDS - We have the aforementioned Shantak Birds which are really hardly birds, but there is also the Bird of Heaven in HPL's short Dreamland tale, THE WHITE SHIP. This avian creature follows the protagonist - a lighthouse keeper in the real world - on his fantastical dream quest visiting various fabled cities and regions in the land of dream. Unfortunately our hero's gleaming white ship is destroyed in the end along with all its crew. The Bird of Heaven lies dead in the waves and a ship has crashed against the rocks at the base of the keeper's lighthouse. I guess the moral of the story is that too much time dreaming can have dire consequences in the waking world? Whipporwills take on a supernatural significance in the story, THE DUNWICH HORROR. Flocks of the birds wait outside houses of the dying hoping to catch their soul as it leaves the body. Snails - Some aspects of the cone-bodied creatures of Yith, also called by Lovecraft, The Great Race, are snail- like. Beaneath their hard outer shell-like bases the Yithians creep about on a slippery 'foot' not unlike that of a snail. Their retractable arms end in claws like a crabs, but their globular heads are surmounted by flower- like protrusions calling to mind the waving viscous eye stalks of a snail. (Exhibit 420)

who are your ocs where did they come from and what do they hope to achieve
thank you anon!!!!!
who are your ocs?
my ocs are a psychedelic prog-rock band! their story runs from 1967 to 1969 :3 the band consists of four members: Heljie Søndergaard (she/her, guitarist), Tue Floros (he/she, bassist), Båra Ekstrand (she/her, drummer & rhythm), & Jeppe Donoghue (he/him, keyboard). the band is named "horse of the invisible" after a creature that Heljie heard in the gardens of her childhood home, and their music is inspired by the dreamlands. in the summer of 1968 the band disappears for 3 months after taking a trip through the hills and then shit gets weird
where did they come from?
all of the characters live in Copenhagen, Denmark. Heljie and Båra's families have been in Denmark forever but Tue moved from Greece in 1965 and Jeppe's family is from Ireland, though he was born in Denmark. the idea for these characters came from me thinking about my interpretation of the dreamlands of the cthulhu mythos and thinking of them as being very akin the surreal imagery in psychedelic music--my image of the dreamlands is very informed by Pepperland from the Yellow Submarine film and by the fantasy landscapes described in Culpeper's Orchard's self-titled album. that got me thinking about a band that writes songs from their dreams, unknowingly describing something they dont understand (all those pretty colours? thats a god!) and the idea went from there. in their original concept, horse of the invisible was very medieval revival with each member based on a mythological creature that corresponded to a mythos beast; Heljie was a unicorn/horse of the invisible, Tue was a kelpie/hippogryff/shantak, Båra was a mermaid/selkie/deep one, and Jeppe was a dragon/lloigor! This concept kind of faded as i began working on what exactly i wanted their story to be, but the mythological creatures still influence the designs for what they wear (in my head. i havent gotten it drawn yet weh) and also features in their second and last album
what do they hope to achieve?
Heljie wants a way to turn her emotions into something productive; she also wants to figure out What the horse of the invisible was, and when she figures more out, she wants to share what she learnt with the world.
Tue just wants to play bass tbh.
Båra wants to travel the world, and when she finds a (rather unconventional) way to do so, she vanishes.
Jeppe wants to be famous, to make something of himself.
thank you for the ask!!! love talking about my little guys :3
