Luo Yunxi Appreciation Master Post: How can someone be so multi-talented?!
In case you did not already know, here are LYX's many talents. It's insane how many different things he can do at a near-professional level beyond acting!
1. Dance/Ballet
LYX graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy majoring in ballet with over 11 years of professional experience.
This is him doing 13+ pirouettes in a performance of Tchaikovsky Rhapsody (full video, he's on the right)
Interpret dance solo (çç§çç«è) where he won the first gold ever for STA (video, news)
Swan Lake solo at the Taoli Cup Dance Competition in high school (video)
Modern dancing solo (é»çœćœ±ç») at his graduation performance (video, he's the only guy in white)
He also taught at the Macao Conservatory for a year and danced in front of national leaders in Flying to the Moon (ć„æ) at the Macao 10th Handover Anniversary (video)
He's super flexible and has a strong core (despite being naturally thin)
In response to request from fans, he performed the Black Moonlight dance in a now viral video on Douyin.
2. Wuxia / Posture
LYX is known as one of the best actors working today for wire work - you can see him here doing 3 consecutive jumps 2-3 stories above ground (compilation videos 1,ïżœïżœ2)
He does a lot of his own stunts and is often better (i.e. more graceful) than his stunt double, even though it's really risky and he's sustained some serious injuries from being dropped accidentally (And the Winner is Love: B roll video, actual scene, other BTS, other fight scenes)
He moves with elegance, not just in action sequences (Ashes of Love fight compilation 1, 2), but people have made video compilations of how he walks, kneels, works his sleeves and train
Of course, it's thanks to his dance foundation, but he also puts a lot of hard work into stunt training. Not something a lot of actors do because it eats up time to make more TV or go on variety shows (Ashes of Love stunt training, BTS)
3. Diving
He played a diver once in Flip in Summer (ć€æ„ćżè·ł) and actually learned to dive... I mean he's no Tom Daley but this looks pretty good for an amateur... (full video)
4. Voice Acting
Heâs always dubbed himself since circa 2018 (with the exception of And the Winner is Love due to Covid logistics issues), which is not the norm in Chinese drama (Ashes of Love dubbing BTS). In fact, he is sometimes the only person in the cast to use his original voice (e.g. in Princess Silver)
He also lends his voice to animations - he was the voice of Viktor in Arcane (BTS video), which received positive feedback (most people didn't realize he was not a professional voice actor)
He appears as a judge and live dubbing performer in Voice Monster alongside the top voice actors in China, Bian Jiang (aka voice of Yehua in Eternal Love, Nan Wangj in the Untamed) and Zhang Jie (aka voice of Donghua in Eternal Love, Sifeng in Love & Redemption). He has so much respect to those working behind the scenes, and it really shows (full video)
5. Singing
Some of you may know that he started out in a boy band called JL with Fu Longfei - these videos didn't age well, but here you go: JL (MV), æ仏 (MV)
He has released a number of solo singles, including çŒè”· (MV), ææäčç« (live), äžæŻæ (MV), çéŁć (MV). and ć (soundtrack), which he composed and wrote the lyrics himself (these are all mando-pop ballads if that's your jam)
He performed Big Fish ć€§é±Œ at Tmall's 11/11 Festival (live video) - while his rendition is not as powerful as the original, he can hit really high notes with an impressive falsetto - I think it goes up to G5 (one octave above middle C)
He performed Pipa Xing (ç”ç¶èĄ) at the Douyin Festival (live video) - the notable part is his Peking Opera style singing at the end
He occasionally releases covers of songs on Chinese karaoke app Changba or Douyin: èŠäžç¶æ仏氱èżæ ·äžäžćčŽ (youtube), é»æć
(youtube), äžæ (youtube), ć±±æ°Žćäžçš (youtube)
He can also sing in other languages, including ćæŹąäœ in Cantonese (recording) - it's actually a very good cover and his Cantonese pronunciation is >95% accurate - there are parts where you can't tell he's not a native speaker.
6. Musical Instruments
He's an accomplished classically-trained pianist, which you can see in...
JL MV (video, starting around 3:30 mark) - don't mind the makeup, it's from ages ago
Mr Mossie season 2 (video)
Love is Sweet (BTS video) - impromptu jazz, he was deciding which song to play
Fan thank you recording (video)
He also plays the guitar, though probably at an amateur level
7. Music Gaming
During college he was obsessed with this music game called O2Jam (ćČäčćą) to the point where he created new tracks (i.e. arrange/compose the music) for the company under the username Dinoroy (explained by himself here, videos of him playing).
He became well-known within the fan community as the legendary Dç„ (D God). There are a lot of funny comments from old players saying that they thought D God is a bitter middle-aged recluse trying to screw them over with difficult tracks (read comments here).
D God was so prolific and reliable that gaming company accepted his submissions without review. Here are some of his best tracks - game arrangement only (Lydia, Croatian Rhapsody, Digital Emotions), music & game arrangement (é»æé
ćœ±), original composition (ć
äčäčç« )
8. League of Legends
He's an LOL super fan, commentator, and player since season 2, went to see worlds in person twice, and was a cast member in a gaming show called Beyond It! Hero (episodes here)
He played the 2018 All-Star Event in Las Vegas teaming with reigning world champion Rookie and delivered the final blow that beat the other team 2:1 (video)
He got a quadra kill at a celebrity mobile game even though his team was crap (video clip)
He co-invested 1M RMB in a team led by Misaya è„éŁ - you can see them playing together in a live broadcast of the mobile game (video)
Update: Our longtime fan boy has become spokesperson of League of Legends and official commentator at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou! The love is reciprocated!
9. Calligraphy/Drawing/Culture
LYX is known for his Chinese handwriting (he practices regularly) - there's even a font based on his handwriting called æ±ä»Șçœäșçäœ (download here)
He does all his own handwriting for marketing materials (e.g. Immortality below) and doesn't need a hand double for scenes where his character is practicing ancient Chinese calligraphy
He's also got amazing drawing skills - check out the Queen of the Night æè± he drew as Runyu while waiting around on set in between takes (video)
While he doesn't go on a lot of variety shows, he's often a guest on cultural programs, like the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy äčŠæłäčçŸ (video), Chinese Fans in æć°äžçéé (video)
His self-produced Mr. Mossie covers a lot of cultural topics (seasons 1, 2, 3), the segment on Hanfu was featured in the UNESCO Chinese Language Video Festival (video)
10. Photography
Luo Yunxi is often seen taking photos on set with his top-of-the-line Leica camera. Here are some of the photos he has shared:

Transcription and Translation of Taylor's Little Red Book Livestream (9th December 2023, to the best of my ability)
Q: Question A: Answer
Side Banters:
H: Host T: Taylor Anything in brackets: me or additional elaboration
Q: Asking him to share his experience of city walking in Shanghai earlier today
A: They went to Yu Garden which Taylor said was incredible, and he tried çłè«è Tanghulu, a traditional Chinese sweet which is candied Chinese Hawthorn
Q: How was the past few days for him and where did he go
A: He's been in China for four nights now (He came by himself btw) First night he stayed at the J Hotel which is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest hotel in the world. After that, he went to æżźéą (the venue for the GQ event) for two nights and it was incredible
Q: How's his jetlag?
A: It's hitting right now đ He's been drinking a lot of tea and getting better
Q: What led him to choose to become an actor instead of a competitive swimmer
A: That was an easy choice, he swan for 10 years and then decided he didn't want to swim in college, and then decided he didn't want to be a doctor (his brother's a doctor) and maybe disappointed his parents (H: No way!) It was a hard decision but he decided to move to LA and pursue acting (H: and you made it!)
Q: How is he enjoying being an actor?
A: It's tough, ups and downs. It's kind of like swimming, it's an individual activity, but you also get to collaborate with the community, which is fun.
Q: What are his favourite three movies and why?
A: The Matrix, Fight Club and Interstellar, he likes movie with a twist
Q: What type of music does he like
A: Deep House, Tropical House, Reggaeton
And then the host taught him a couple of Chinese phrases
Q: What sparked his interest in fashion
A: His dad bought him a subscription to GQ when he was younger which started his interest in fashion, and then he started watching fashion-related movies (like Brad Pitt in Allied) which further cultivated that interest. Maybe in the future, he'll try out characters like that
Q: Did he meet any friends in the GQ event?
A: He met Li Xian who he met in Italy earlier, otherwise met a lot of new people.
Q: Why is he passionate about being eco-friendly when it comes to fashion?
A: It was inspired initially by his mom. They lived in the countryside with horses, cows, and fields away from the city, and he has seven siblings (he's the sixth oldest/ third youngest) so there are a lot of hand-me-downs and not a lot of new things, so the family kept on using the same things. He gained a deeper awareness of the issue in recent years.
Q: Talk a bit about fashion sustainability
A: A lot of fast fashion material and clothes are thrown out really soon and disposed of really quickly (despite still being in good shape) but a lot of clothing material, especially synthetic fabric can't be recycled, so it's just like throwing out plastic. Actually, a lot of clothes can keep being reused and styled. He's had the inner shirt he's currently wearing for four years.
Q: Any future plans?
A: He has a film project early next year and there are other things he's excited about but can't talk about yet
Q: Is he going to Shanghai Disneyland?
A: He wants to but he doesn't have time
H: You don't even need to go to Disney you look like a Disney character already! (Damn right!!!)
Q: What food have you had in China so far?
A: Don't get him started on the subject of food đ He's had a Shanghainese Lunch today and a Cantonese (YAY) lunch yesterday, and he's looking for some spicy food for tomorrow. Also, he had a really crazy allergic reaction and his lips got giant (???). He needs to be careful with food.
T: I see talk about RWRB, what do you want to know? I'll give some secret intel
(me: YESSSSSSSSSS FINALLY)
RWRB questions speedrun:
Q: sequel?
A: ... He doesn't know. He says he thinks Casey has to write another book for that.
Q: Deleted scenes?
A: They're deleted for a reason (DUDE)
Q: BTS?
A: He says he has some on his phone and he would show us but he doesn't have his phone right now, he might post it later (PLEASE DO)
H: He's leaving after three days
T: (reading off comments) Come visit Hong Kong next time? Yeah! (me, who lives in Hong Kong: AHHHHHHHHHH)
Q: Do you know any Chinese nicknames of yours?
A: ćżæš. (tei le, or "Tay"-le) meaning too happy (I made a list of the boys' Chinese nicknames here)
Annddd... That's it! The live was pretty short, like 20 minutes? He ended it by picking up the phone and showing the audience the Shanghai city view himself (I was too busy typing to get a screenshot)
All transcription or interpretation mistakes are mine
#rwrb#red white and royal blue#rwrb movie#taylor zakhar perez#alex claremont diaz#holy shit this was exiciting#i haven't done transcription in three years#also something I wanted to note but it's speculation so I'm putting it in the tags#Taylor had to point out RWRB himself even though most of the comments were about RWRB followed by please come to xx city#Even during watching the live i kept thinking why isn't the host mentioning RWRB at all Taylor read RWRB himself#but I have two speculations#either this was in collaboration with a fashion brand so they wanted to put the focus on fashion#but in that case Taylor never mentioned the brand or it was never plugged in like a commercial live stream would#Even the account is Taylor's own account and not a brand account#or it's China's latent homophobia :) which in that case FUCCCKKKK#meraki translates

--From The Joy Luck Club--
The old woman remembered a swan she had bought many years ago in Shanghai for a foolish sum. "This bird," boasted the market vendor, "was once a duck that stretched its neck in hopes of becoming a goose. And now look, it is too beautiful to eat!" Then the woman and the swan sailed across an ocean many thousands of lei wide, stretching their necks toward America. On her journey, she cooed to the swan, "In America, I will have a daughter just like me. But over there, nobody will say her worth is measured by the loudness of her husband's belch. Over there, nobody will look down on her because I will make her speak only perfect American English. And over there, she will always be too full to swallow any sorrow. She will know my meaning because I will give her this swan, a creature that became more than what was hoped for." But when she arrived in the new country the immigration officials pulled the swan away from her, leaving the woman fluttering her arms and with only one swan feather for a memory. For a long time now, the women had wanted to give her daughter the single swan feather and tell her: "This feather may look worthless, but it comes from afar and carries with it all my good intentions."

If you were in charge of the specials, where would they take place? What or who would you introduce in that special?
Overall I'd keep the location for the specials we've gotten so far, and the characters we've met, because I did enjoy those. Though I'd make the New York Heroes be Miraculous-based, and have a lot less heroes in the city as well.
For the Shanghai special the only thing I'd really change is how/why Marinette goes to China. Because it was so OOC in my opinion for her to lie about her parents about why she wanted to go, especially when they had been saving up for it! Marinette doesn't like lying, and while she may have to lie about being a hero, her parents know she has a crush on Adrien! Mini rant over, but I'd either have Marinette directly tell her parents she wants to go because Adrien is going, or have Marinette actually want to visit her great uncle and connect to her roots. Just no taking advantage of her parents with fake reasons.
Paris Special would not change because it's perfect in every way. (JK give me an identity reveal between Hesperia and Claw Noir and more of the reverse world in general).
The recent London Special is the one I would completely revamp. I did enjoy the London Special, but it felt more like it should have been a two parter to open up season six rather than being one of the specials. I would have my version of the London special actually focus on and mostly be in London. Perhaps this could be where we meet Marinette's aunt for the first time, or maybe learn more about Felix's side of the family. Fu and Marianne could have appeared as well, which would have been fun.
---
I donât know the official state of these other specials but I know there are/were plans for specials set in Rio, Tokyo, and Dakar; all of which I think would be fun locations to see.
If I were in charge of making new specials though it would be fun to base around some of my OCs. So most notably a Miraculous Portland with my Swan hero Levi (Tundra); and one based in Mexico with the Guardian of my Hidden Box, XĂłchitl. I would probably explore Tundra being a solo hero in his part of the world, and the Hidden Box would be a great opportunity to introduce more Alpha kwamis.
Then places in general Iâd like to see would be Specials in: India, Australia, any of the Pacific Islands nations would be cool, and definitely more from Africa. Egypt has a lot of canon Miraculous history already, then I plan to have OCs in Zimbabwe and Sudan, so those places could be fun as well. Then maybe somewhere up in the arctic circle; like Russia, Canada, or one of the Scandinavian countries.

Disney Dreamland - Part 4: Fantasyland
(I had already posted about Mysteryland previously, which retroactively makes it Part 3. So we're moving on to the next part.)
Quite possibly the largest of the five lands, probably even beating out my mega-Adventureland.Â
Small World Gardens
Located behind Small World, this sprawling area would transition into Storybook Town Square. Flower arrangements inspired by Keukenhof in the Netherlands. Similar to Parisâs Fantasyland, there would be a couple rivers running through the garden with lovely bridges to cross over them.Â
Dumbo the Flying Elephant : The Masquerade Circus could be positioned near the Mysteryland/Fantasyland border so that the back of the tents could serve as a backdrop for the Dumbo ride, which would have its own little area in the gardens. I was at a loss on where else to place this ride, but I stubbornly wanted to include it as it is currently the only attraction to be found in all 6 existing castle parks and I didn't want to break that streak.
"Casey Jr. Circus Train": Doesn't have to specifically be Dumbo-themed, I just really want a cute novelty train to wind through the garden, with cute bridges to pass over the walkways and rivers.
âSwan Boatsâ: Paddle boats. I say âswan boatsâ but they donât have to be just swans, but could also resemble other birds such as ducks, geese, and flamingos.
Symphony Gazebo: A gazebo in the garden for a live band to play classical music.
âWindmill snack standâ: I saw a picture of the Old Mill in Paris and thought it looked so charming. German pretzels.Â
Storybook Town Square
The town follows in the footsteps of Ananheimâs 1983 overhaul with each building having its own unique look. Would feature a fluid mix of Bavarian and British architecture. The Bavarian half of the town on the west contains âPinocchio Squareâ and the theater. The British half on the east contains Peter Pan, Little Nemo (even though Nemo is American), and Mr. Toad. A large fountain stands in the center. Cobblestones would pave the ground. I want this area to evoke the feeling of Parisâs Fantasyland as well as Efteling in the Netherlands .Â
Pinocchioâs Daring Escape: Focuses more on escaping Pleasure Island. The only other thing I would change is have all the sets and animatronics appear to be carved out of wood, and have real clothes on the animatronics, for a more high-quality âhand madeâ look, the implication being the entire ride is a life-sized puppet show. The ride building along with the toy shop and restaurant form a smaller âPinocchio Squareâ, which would include a smaller fountain with a statue of Pinocchio.
Geppettoâs Toy Shop: Would feature regular retail plush toys, as well as old fashioned toys like wooden marionettes and wind-ups, as well as cuckoo clocks. Christmas ornaments can also be purchased here.  Â
Pinocchioâs Pizza Place: Italian cuisine. Basically the Pinocchio Village Haus in Orlando, but with an alliterative name, and also some of the pizzas have toppings decorated to look like Pinocchio smiley faces. Quick service. Â
Once Upon a Time Theatre: Hosts live indoor stage shows. While any show with Disney musical medleys is fine, I would much prefer original shows of rarely-featured stories, such as the other tales from the 1001 Arabian Nights, or a stage version of Disney's Return to Oz (which I personally love better as an Oz adaptation than MGM's movie; 2013's Oz the Great and Powerful was meh). Building design would be modeled after the new Fantasyland Forest Theatre in Tokyo.
âGerman restaurantâ: Table service.Â
Flight to Neverland: Would utilize the best aspects from each version of the ride. For example, I love that Shanghaiâs queue is themed to a London park (Kensington Gardens?), and the chimneys in Parisâs loading dock blow smoke. The building facade would definitely have a functioning clock tower, in homage to Big Ben, but designed to fit with the small town aesthetic. The name change is simply because I feel like guests actually take on the role of the Darling children more than they do Peter.
Little Nemo in Slumberland: Little Nemo may not be a Disney IP, but it has such rich and vibrant imagery, I think it could work really well as a Disney ride. Not to mention itâs in the public domain, so there shouldnât be any legal issues. In many ways itâs very similar to Peter Panâs Flight, so maybe it could also help balance the wait times between the two rides. Guests take on the role of Nemo and ride flying beds (or at least, benches that look like beds, with a headboard and a footboard) that soar out the bedroom window. What follows are awe-inspiring, almost surreal, scenes of Slumberland. Things start to distort and become chaotic as the dream turns into a nightmare. Before anything too awful happens, guests âwake upâ back in Nemoâs bedroom while the voice of Nemoâs mother scolds us for eating before bed. For visual reference, I recommend the Osamu Dezaki pilot film that was created during the movieâs development, though I obviously wouldnât put the giant Sauron eye in the ride.Â
Mr. Toadâs Wild Ride: Orlandoâs former double-track ride, but with Anaheimâs building exterior. I never got to experience this ride and I really want to.
Ever After Castle
Here it is, the traditional centerpiece of all Disney parks, now the centerpiece of Fantasyland instead. I personally think of most Disney castles as tall but not wide. This castle would be slightly different from the traditional Disney castle by taking up more ground space. I hate to sound blasphemous, but for this castle Iâm thinking of something similar to Shrekâs Far Far Away Castle in Universal Singapore but with more detailed ornate decorations like Parisâ castle, and the outer walls slightly covered in ivy vines for a more inviting, homely look. It would also stand on top of an elevated foundation, surrounded by a moat. There would be a large courtyard in front of the main castle building, with the carousel placed in the center of it. The gift shop and the meet-and-greet are each placed on either the west or east side of the courtyard. The north of the courtyard would feature the restaurant on the ground floor, the entrance to the underground boat ride, and stairs to the second floor attraction.Â
Cinderellaâs Carriage Carrousel: Regarding the visual design, I want it to look like the pumpkin carriage turned into a carousel. The canopy could include fiber optic fairy dust that lights up at night.
Be Our Guest Restaurant: French cuisine. I really like Tokyoâs Beauty and the Beast ride and would love to import it, but I respect the OLCâs exclusivity rights too much. I wondered if I could make it a combination ride and restaurant where each table is a ride vehicle, but I worried that would cause motion sickness which is a big no-no for a restaurant. At the very least, for my version I would love to have animatronics perform âBe Our Guestâ every 30 minutes or so. Also, perhaps every hour, Belle and Beast performers would come out onto the dance floor and invite guests to waltz with them. Hot Take: The Grey Stuff is very obviously a savory food as it is clearly presented on a tray of hors d'oeuvres in the movie. But since the version currently offered in the parks has been imprinted in fansâ minds I think itâs best to offer two versions: Savory (chicken liver pate) as an appetizer and Sweet (cookies and cream) as a dessert.
Royal Meet-and-Greet: I personally do not care much for meet and greets, but for the people that do, here you can meet the Princesses, some of the Princes, as well as non-Princesses such as Giselle, Esmeralda, and TinkerBell.Â
Kingdom Treasures gift shop: Based on the Tokyo shop of the same name.Â
Crystal Caverns Canal: Boat ride underneath the castle. My first idea for this ride was basically Voyage to the Crystal Grotto from Shanghai, if all the character statues were built out of crystals and mosaic tiles. Then I realized, thereâs probably too much IP already in the land, so I think there could be an original story about the crystals being a source of magic for the kingdom, and have scenes of wizards and fairies harvesting the crystals and creating experiments with them. Sort of a âtour of the workshopâ kind of ride. Iâm thinking of something with the same vibes as Dreamflight in Efteling.Â
Merlinâs Library / Yen Sidâs Library: Located on the second floor of the castle. Originally I wanted a ride in a similar vein to Symbolica in Efteling, but with a story like that of Mystic Manor in Hong Kong. Then I wondered if it would be feasible to have a ride in the second story, so Iâm also okay with this being a walkthrough attraction. I feel either wizard could work here. Merlin is the more well-known wizard, but Yen Sid is easier to create an original backstory for. The basic gist of the attraction is you wander around a library with little vignettes of magical items operating on their own; a quill pen writing by itself, a large spell book turning its own pages, floating books sorting themselves on the shelves, etc. There could even be some interactive elements, such as paintings that change, or opening a book can project a scene âcoming to lifeâ and âescapingâ the book.
Fairytale Gardens: Walkthrough garden. There would be lovely little vignettes scattered throughout, including Snow Whiteâs wishing well, a giant beanstalk, and The Sword in the Stone placed in a little alcove in the castleâs outer wall. This would be outside the courtyard. Maybe off to the side, to the west, wrapping around the outer castle wall, next to Shadowland Forest.
Shadowland Forest
Inspired by the Black Forest of Germany, this area features spookier attractions. West of the castle, shares the border with Mysteryland and the Gravity Falls area. There would be plenty of fir, spruce, and pine trees to make it feel like an actual forest, maybe even hide some of the attractions from view.Â
Snow Whiteâs Scary Adventures : Building facade would include the Evil Queen peeking out her window. I would place the building nearest to Storybook Town Square, at the edge of the forest.
âGingerbread Factory Tourâ : Based on my twisted Hansel and Gretel dark ride idea. Guests are given a tour of gingerbread golems at work (something like Tim Burtonâs version of Wonkaâs factory if it were more surreal and set in 1800s Germany), then are chased through obstacles, such as lollipop blades swinging from the walls, and peppermint stick darts, by Hansel and Gretel themselves. Theyâve been very distrustful of adults after their parents abandoned them in the woods, and after the witch held them captive. They deem the guests harmless, and let them go but warn them to never come back.
Candy Carnival shop: The ride would exit into a shop themed to a candy carnival safe haven that Hansel and Gretel built for children lost in the woods. Would feature gingerbread treats and a nice selection of old-fashioned candies and German sweets. Guests can also watch bakers and candymakers at work. (Despite the name, there are no actual rides here, just animatronic decorations.)
Dragon Mountain: I wanted a unique âMountainâ ride, much like how the Matterhorn and Everest are unique to their parks. And dragons are cool. Originally this was going to be based on Maleficent, but now Iâm leaning more towards an original story. And to put a neat spin on things, instead of a fire-breathing dragon, it would be a wintery ice dragon! I would also love it if the dragon was not portrayed as a mindless, violent beast hoarding treasure, but a parent protecting their child from intruders.
I initially wanted a sub-land recreating Halloween Town (with a spooky "Scare-ousel") but I felt Fantasyland was already overrun with too many IPs (and seven carousels is enough for one park), so here an area is set aside for seasonal Nightmare Before Christmas or Villains themed events, leaving the Haunted Mansion free during the holidays.Â
Disney Dreamland Railroad Fantasyland station: Styled after the ruins of a medieval castle. Located on the edge of the forest near Ever After Castle, next to the entrance to Winter Village.
Wonderland
East of the castle, on the border with Create-It-Land. While there would be plenty of natural green, there would also be an abundant mix of giant pink, purple, and turquoise âwildlifeâ, as seen in the initial scrapped concept art for Tokyoâs expansion. Giant mushrooms in place of benches, trees decorated with misleading signs, lamp posts that look like giant flowers. March Hare would definitely be included as a walk-around character alongside Hatter and Alice. People often forget the tea party took place at the Hareâs and mistakenly believe Hatter to be the host, and I will not stand for this March Hare erasure. I would also have plenty of card soldiers roaming around, âpatrollingâ the area.
Down the Rabbit-Hole: An upside-down funhouse with wonky mirrors, and trick doors galore! A hall of doors in the end would lead into the maze. I was thinking there could probably also be a madhouse ride portion where guests can experience the room actually turning upside down; inspired by Villa Volta in Efteling.Â
Wonderland Maze: As much as I like the Alice in Wonderland ride in Anaheim, I personally feel that Wonderland is a world that is best experienced up close and at your own pace, which a maze perfectly embodies. While the maze would obviously be themed to classic animated Alice like the Paris version, it would have different environments, like Shanghaiâs Tim Burton version. First half of the maze would be a forest-like environment with giant plants and singing flowers. Second half would have rose bushes, fancy iron fences, and carved stone walls and statues for the Queen of Heartâs castle area. There would be a handful of tiny doors scattered throughout that guests can crawl through as shortcuts. Among the character statues scattered around the maze, I really want to include the Mock-Turtle and Gryphon, based on their designs from the Jell-O commercial, perhaps on a sandy beach shore by a small fountain / pond.
House of Cards Banquet Hall: Inspired by the Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall in Tokyo. Would follow the same eccentric and colorful design scheme, but I want it to look like a stone castle made out of cards. Definitely would have lovely stained glass windows. Desserts include Royal Heart Tarts. They could also come in souvenir cups and plates like the ones found in Tokyo.
Mad Tea Party: Would have a canopy roof to protect from the weather and direct sunlight, but I also wouldnât mind a stained-glass version. Or even a canopy made of trees. Teacup designs would be a mix of various patterns from all versions (except Orlandoâs, I do not care for the zigzag scribbles). Would also include the giant teapot with the Dormouse in the center. To help with queue waits, Iâd even have two ride systems, much like how Orlando doubled their Dumbo ride. One could even be themed to the Hatter while the other to the March Hare.
March Hareâs tea shop: Would have the same building design as March Hare Refreshments in Paris. Would sell several varieties of tea, Unbirthday Cake, and macarons. Could also feature a long table with interactive tea things to play with, like Shanghai does at the end of its maze, and plenty of fancy chairs for photo-ops.
Mad Hatterâs hat shop: Hats, Mickey ears, and other headgear. To match the March Hareâs chimney ears, this building would resemble a large top hat. Would also feature hat racks for photo-ops, like Shanghai does at the end of its maze.
100 Acre Wood
East of Town Square, on the border with Create-It-Land. A tiny little area with tall trees providing shade, a lovely little Poohsticks Bridge over a small river, and a cozy corner for a meet-and-greet with Pooh and friends.
Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day: Basically the same as Poohâs Hunny Hunt in Tokyo, which includes the giant book facade, and the same level of crafted detail and technical marvel throughout the ride, but with scenes added for the ârain, rain, rainâ, and Poohâs hero party as the ending. I would also use Anaheimâs zany color scheme for the Heffalumps and Woozles room with some added special effects for even more zaniness. The rideâs name change is just to both set it apart from the other versions, and because I realized with the exception of Pooh stuck in the honey tree, all the iconic scenes in the ride come from Blustery Day.
Pooh Corner gift shop: Also utilizes the same English cottage look as Tokyoâs.
Hunny Smackerels snack stand: Hunny Pot cupcakes, honeycomb, honey ice cream, and a separate cart for honey popcorn in lovely Pooh-shaped popcorn buckets. It would be really cute if the stand is actually inside a giant tree trunk, with a dutch door counter window for guests to order from.Â
The next three sub-lands would be behind Ever After Castle, outside the perimeter of the railroad tracks border. The entrance to Winter Village is between Shadowland Forest and the castle, while the entrance to Encanto Valley is between Wonderland and the castle. Mermaid Lagoon is directly behind the castle, between the other two sub-lands and only accessible through them. Small mountains would form berms for each sub-land. For reference, think of how Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land are arranged in Hong Kong.
Winter Village
Inspired by my Narnia theme park concept. This entire mini-land would be indoors, to have air-conditioning to sell the illusion of winter, and to preserve the artificial winter setup from the real-life elements outdoors. This mini-land would be round (roughly) so that the glass ceiling that lets in natural light can have a hexagonal snowflake design. At night time thereâd be projections of Northern Lights. NOT Frozen themed. Itâs a cute movie and all, but far overstayed its welcome before it was even released on DVD. Village would be a mix of Russian and Scandinavian architecture. Can be used for a Santa Claus meet-and-greet during Christmas.
Enchanted Snow Palace: The planned but never built ride based on Hans Christian Andersenâs Snow Queen. The concept art looks leagues better than the final product of Frozen Ever After.
âWinter Sleigh Rideâ: Ride through winter scenery in sleighs pulled by reindeer. Technically a dark ride, since the entire subland is indoors, but feels like an outdoor ride.
"Snowball Arcade": I really wanted something to simulate snowball fights, but without the chaos and mess. Here, guests can throw snowballs at targets to win plush prizes.
"Russian cafe": Russian pastries and snacks
"Ice skating rink": Free if you bring your own skates.
Mermaid Lagoon
A scaled-down version of the land in Tokyo DisneySea, without the playground and kiddie rides. Like DisneySea, it would have a lovely seashell castle facade, with the attractions indoors. Unlike DisneySea, there would be a small lake in front with a ship restaurant docked on it.
âUnder the Seaâ: NOT a retelling of the movie, but instead an original story that would take place some time pre-movie. Follows Ariel on one of her outings as she explores the sea looking for new treasures to add to her collection. Final scene could be of Ariel in her grotto after completing her latest trip, but feeling unsatisfied as she wistfully looks at her collection, while instrumentals for âPart Of Your Worldâ softly play in the background.Â
King Tritonâs Concert Hall: Just like the one in Tokyo DisneySea, this would be a 360 degree show with Ariel âswimmingâ in midair above the audience, a giant animatronic Triton, performer puppets of Flounder and Sebastian, and other mixed special effects.Â
Undersea Carousel: Fish carousel. Underwater lighting effects and blows bubbles as it spins.Â
Arielâs Grotto gift shop
Ship restaurant: Mediterranean seafood. I mean, itâs on a human ship thatâs not technically in Tritonâs Kingdom, so I think this gets a pass for serving fish. It could even be themed to Chef Louis for a laugh.Â
âNighttime Water Showâ: Just spitballing an idea, maybe the lagoon could also be used for a nighttime water show a la Fantasmic / World of Color. The viewing area could be across the lagoon from Tritonâs castle; the lights of Tritonâs castle would coordinate with the show.
Encanto Valley
A lovely recreation of the valley, with Casita and a little village area for shops and Colombian dining, and plenty of lush greenery.Â
La Casa Madrigal: I really like @rrdcoocâs idea for Casita as a walkthrough attraction! Itâs so cool! Especially the ideas for Pepa and Luisa's rooms. I wouldnât change much, aside from adding a few extra touches, such as an interactive flower wall in Isabelaâs room that mimics guestsâ silhouettes (like Daniel Rozin's "Mechanical Mirrors"), and maybe a couple themed flat rides to add capacity, such as a flowery swing spinner ride in Isabelaâs room, and a tiny jungle animal carousel in Antonioâs room. In Dolores's room, guests can see sound waves (like that Magic School Bus episode), and Camilo's room can contain "mirrors" with different character models that mimic guests' movements in real time (like VTuber avatars). Also includes a gift shop selling âhomemadeâ fashions and plush toys by Mirabel.
âMagic Realism Art Exhibitâ: While I think the final movie is perfect, I would have loved it if Casita more closely resembled its concept art, which leaned much more heavily into magic realism. This attraction would be a walkthrough art exhibit full of giant optical illusion paintings that guests can pose in for photo-ops. For reference, Iâm recalling the Trick Eye Museum, a temporary art exhibit I went to years ago in Hong Kong.
Encanto Sing-Along: Iâm not always a huge fan of the âbook reportâ shows they do in the Parks, but in this case, most of Encantoâs songs are so specific to the story that removing them from the context of the movie wouldn't work (especially in the case of fan favorite âWe Donât Talk About Brunoâ). The stage can also be used for original Colombian performances, as well as from neighboring Latin American countries.
Julietaâs Arepas: Food cart. These arepas may not heal you, but theyâre magically delicious!Â
Arabian Oasis (scrapped)
Before Encanto was released and became one of my favorite recent movies, my initial idea was to put in an Aladdin-themed area. Not an exact recreation of Agrabah, more like a broad strokes version of Agrabah in the same manner as Arabian Coast in Tokyo DisneySea.
Magic Carpet Ride: A suspension ride in a similar manner as Peter Panâs Flight, using the carpet vehicles. Fly through the Agrabah marketplace, over the desert, and above the clouds. Ride music features instrumentals from âA Whole New Worldâ.
Scheherazadeâs Tales From the 1001 Nights: Stage show.
Flavors of Agrabah: Arabian / Middle-Eastern cuisineÂ
Cave of Wonders gift shop: I think the theming is appropriate considering guests are exchanging money for goods and not stealing them (ideally).

Bird Watching Tour in China: Discover The Best Places
The winter season makes us indeed lazy, but choosing to get out of the cozy blanket and head for a bird watching tour in China will never be a regretful experience.
It is time to escape the daily busy schedule and head to Chinaâs top destination for bird watching. China is home to various bird species that are a real treat to the eyes of a bird enthusiast.
Furthermore, bird watching is one of the best ways to give your mind a dose of peace and refresh your inner soul. So, are you confused about which places to explore in China for bird watching? Continue reading the article below.
So, letâs get started!
Rongcheng
Rongcheng is said to be the largest Swan habitat, covering an area of about 10,500 hectares. It is one of the top swan lakes in the world and is perfect for birding trips in China. As soon as the winter season knocks on the door, thousands of swans from Siberia fly towards Rongcheng Swan Lake for wintering. Watch the swans dancing, singing and walking with your naked eyes, which promises an enchanting experience overall.
Xinjiang Bayanbulak Swan National Reserve
Towards 400km northwest of Korla, high-altitude wetlands form the second-largest grassland area in China, with the Kaidu River flowing through it. In addition to this, it is known to be the famous Xinjiang Swan Lake, which is the natural habitat for the massive population of wild swans. Donât forget to capture some of the captivating moments when the birdâs wings are fanning.
Poyang Lake
This lake is a must-watch destination for birding trips in China. It falls in the Jiangxi Province. The place holds around 310 species of birds and is famous for being the âKingdom of the Stork.â You will come across a huge number of rare birds here, like Grus leucogeranus, Grus japonesus, and many more. Along with this, the place is also popular as the largest migratory bird wintering area in Asia since around 1 lakh birds fly here during the winter season.
Dongtan Wetland
Another best place for bird watching tour in China is Dongtan Wetland on Chongming Island. It is about 100 km away from downtown Shanghai. Being one of the most preferred winter birding parks, it spreads around 24 square kilometres. Every year, from November to February, the place holds an annual birding festival, welcoming the largest number of birds.
Yunnan
This place provides a warm and mild climate in winter. Red-billed gulls from Siberia have spent their winters here for almost 30 years. For birding trips in China, add Dianchi Lake and Chuhu Park to your bucket list in Yunnan. Head to the Botanical Garden in Xishuangbanna, which has a tropical climate, to watch the Crimson Sunbird and Anastomus Oscitans from close by. However, the Napa Lake wetlands in Shangri La are home to noble birds like black-necked cranes, attracting numerous photographers worldwide.
Wrap Up Time
Finally, these were the places ideal for bird watching tour in China. You should add these destinations to your bucket list and make sure to visit them once you land in this country. Donât forget to carry your cameras as you are going to capture the most beautiful birds behind the lens.

First Week of School in SJTU
Hi! After celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with my family in Fuzhou, I returned to SJTU just in time for the first day of school! The university hosted a welcoming ceremony for all new JI students, where we had the chance to meet our instructors and connect with other new students. It was great to listen to speeches from JI alumni and the student body, who shared their experiences and advice. Their words really fueled my excitement about studying at JI.
The very next day was the official first day of classes, and I was lucky enough to secure all the courses I wanted. The course selection process here felt familiar, like back at Michigan. However, JI added a few extra rounds of lottery before the early bird course registration, which gave everyone more chances to enroll in popular classes. I found the notification system for new course openings super helpful since I received an email reminder about available spots just in time!
Classes at JI have a similar vibe to Michigan. EECS courses are taught to large groups, while humanities and social sciences classes are more intimate, with smaller groups. Since weâre not in Michigan anymore, the "Michigan time" policy doesnât apply here. But, I noticed the schedule allows a 10-minute break after 45 minutes of lecture, which is perfect for a quick bathroom or water break.
During the first week, SJTU offered free tours around campus, focusing on the libraries and recreational centers to help students make the most of the schoolâs resources. I joined the library tour, where the guides walked us through how to reserve seats, print documents, and navigate the schoolâs databases. We also got a tour of the main library, which has plenty of seating areas, a rest zone, a cafĂ©, and even a basic school supplies shop. However, there arenât many computers available, so itâs more convenient to bring your own laptop.
(Below is a beautiful staircase in the main library)
I also checked out another popular library (SJTU has five in total), and it was impressive as well, but the real highlight was Siyuan Lake just outside. The lake is surrounded by a bamboo-lined walking trail and traditional Chinese pavilions. Walking around the lake was so relaxing, and I even saw some black swans and koi fish swimming around.

Vivian Maier: Nanny With a Rolleiflex
Spread over two floors in the Fotografiska building in New Yorkâs Flatiron District, the exhibition Vivian Maier: Unseen Work (which runs through September 29) reveals a trove of surprises. The late, great street photographer was also an evocative portraitist: Maier, a notorious loner, liked to click with people. The urban documentarian of humdrum life had a knack for humor and an eye for drama.
âThe scenes she photographed are often anecdotes, coincidences, lapses of reality, the residual moments of life to which no one pays attention,â notes Anne Morin, director of DiChroma Photography in Madrid and the curator of the show. âEach of her images are situated in a place where the ordinary sheds its skin and becomes extraordinary.â
Unknown Legends
The Maier scenes range widely: from newspaper headlines peeking out from piles of debris to abstracted closeups of found objects; from candid surprised faces to random odd shots of homeless people sleeping on benches. Her Super 8 films explore waves of Chicago pedestrians, a detached swarm of humanity.
As the largest Maier retrospective yet shown in America, Unseen Work bears earmarks of completism. âSome of the newest images are quite aestheticâbut many leave you wondering the intentions,â opined the Phoblographer. âThey leave me wondering why these images needed to be in a museum in the first place.â
By all indications, Maierâs photographs were not intended for museum walls. In her career as a nanny, she obsessively chronicled her life and times, but rarely shared her images with othersâor even developed them into prints. Her pack-rat mentality preserved the negatives, hundreds of thousands of them stowed in boxes until the end of Maierâs life (at age 83) in 2009.
It was only afterwardâwhen photo collectors including John Maloff and Jeff Goldstein brought her work into the art world, chronicled in Maloffâs fascinating 2013 documentary Finding Vivian Maierâthat she became a photography star.
Lights Out
And Fotografiska New York is no ordinary museum. Founded in 2019 as a stateside installment in a global cadre of photography venuesâin cities including Berlin, Stockholm, Tallinn, and Shanghaiâthe Manhattan locale has sported six floors of exhibition space and launched some 49 ambitious and far-ranging displays, from the eccentric to the mainstream. (Showing concurrently with Maier: Brooklyn street photographer Bruce Gilden and a bevy of People magazineâs iconic portraits.)
Fotografiska has been one of the few U.S. museums devoted to photography with the space and vision for shows usually found overseas in places like Madridâs PhotoEspaña or Arlesâs Les Rencontres de la Photographie. Sadly, having survived Covid, Fotografiska New York will close its doors on September 29, at the end of its exhibitions on Maier and Gilden. While tight-lipped about the future, the museum, a for-profit business, claims it will relocate somewhere in Manhattan with a broader floorspace.
âWeâve been having ongoing challenges with regard to the exhibition spaces,â executive director Sophie Wright told the New York Times about the moveâwhich happens as the building changes owners. âThe verticality of that building is not easy to manage. Our audience has been given a bumpy experience.â
Fotografiska hopes to announce a new temporary home soon. (Yet one canât help thinking of restaurants closing âfor renovationâ and wondering whether theyâll ever reopen.) Itâs somehow fitting that this venueâs swan song is a vast survey of a lonesome photographer who was unknown in her lifetime, rediscovered in the internet era, and somehow became emblematic of how we see one another in the world now.
The Art of the Selfie
According to the 2021 biography Vivian Maier Developed, by genealogist Ann Marksâwhich meticulously traces the artistâs life, with help from photo archives in the John Maloof CollectionâMaier took up photography in earnest in her mid-20s after buying a top-viewing Rolleiflex camera. âIt was designed to be held at the waist, facilitating inconspicuous picture taking,â Marks notes. âWith its square format, there was no need to shift from horizontal to vertical positioning. ⊠Soon she began to compose self-portraits while cradling her camera, presenting herself as a serious photographer.â
The reclusive Maier, who routinely hid her past and inner identity from people she met, had an affinity for selfies and left behind hundreds of them. âVivian Maier is such a big phenomenon nowadays because this problem of [the] self-portrait resonates with the selfie culture we see today,â curator Morin told artsy.net. âAll that crisis of identity we are viewing on social media, with tons of selfies, finds an echo in the work of Maier. Perhaps 30 years ago, she would not have been so famous or so interesting because the selfie was not so important at that time.â
Maierâs artful self-portraits, ranging from geometric mirror shots to peekaboo shadows, seem to reflect her evolving artistic personae: the confident young New Yorker who held professional photography aspirations; the adventurous, self-sufficient world traveler; the contented nanny in the Chicago suburbs who took her charges on photo trips around the city; and, later, the oft-uprooted worker who struck a lone pose against scenes of desolation and decay.
The Kids are Alright
Throughout her adult life, Maier worked as a nanny to support her creative calling as a photographer. Her stints of employment, and relationships with families who hired her, varied widely. (One gig with talk-show host Phil Donahue lasted just a few months.) By all accounts, she was most comfortable during the 11 years she spent with the Gensburg family in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois.
âShe was like a real, live Mary Poppins,â Lane Gensburg later said of Maier. (However, Marks notes that Maier, a serious film buff, âwholeheartedly despisedâ the movie about the fictional nanny: âHer angry notes describe it as âoutdated,â âa real fiasco.â and portraying a servant-child type of relationship.â)
In her years with the Gensburgs (1956â67), Maier bonded with the three brothers while documenting both their suburban lives and the cultural mosaic of the nearby Windy City. She left the family when the boys grew up but remained friendly. She never again found such a great fit.
Four decades later, at the end of her life, the Gensburg brothers helped Maier secure an apartment and then, after a head injury caused by a sidewalk fall, a live-in care facility. By then destitute, demented, and very delinquent on payments to a storage-locker company, Vivian Maier lost most of her possessions when the company auctioned them off.
Photo collectors John Maloof and Jeffrey Goldstein were among several bidders who claimed her photographs, negatives, and undeveloped film rolls (amid voluminous boxes of newspapers, books, broken cameras, and bric-a-brac, most of which was tossed or donated).
Maier never recovered from the fall. When she passed away in 2009, the Gensburgs held a memorial and published an obituary, which helped Maloof track down and identify the mysterious photographer whose images were, after appearing on Flickr and eBay, going viral and selling like pricey hotcakes in cyberspace.
Isolation and Empathy
Part of the paradox of Maierâs life and work is the disconnect between them. What the Gensburgsâor any of her employersâdidnât know about was her tangled family background, which she kept under wraps. She had her reasons: âShe clearly concluded that no one would want to learn their nanny had an unstable, narcissistic mother; a violent, alcoholic father; and a drug-addicted, schizophrenic brother,â Marks explains. âIt can safely be assumed that Vivian did not have DNA on her side.â
Long estranged from her nuclear family, Maier battled demons of her own: a severe and debilitating hoarding habit; and a condition that in Marksâ account, posthumously, experts term a âschizoid disorder.â The former wreaked plenty of havoc in Maierâs life, but also compelled her to preserve her trove of unpublished images. The latter strained her human interactions, yet may well have intensified her work.
Maier possessed a drive to document all her movements in the world, yet lacked any sense of follow-through in sharing them. She shunned close human contact (no hugs!) but found fascination in people she witnessed. She was detached enough to invade her subjectsâ privacy, yet connected enough to see their lives. She expressed her inner self in outward reflections. She was of the last century, but it couldâve been ours.
Unlikely Legacy
After it was discovered by the art world, Maierâs body of work set off a feeding frenzy among collectors, curators, fellow photographers, critics, historians, photo aficionados ⊠and capitalist venturers. With no direct heirs, the contents of her estate sparked disputes, lawsuits, and deal-making, with John Maloof emerging as the owner of the lionâs share of the archive and New Yorkâs Howard Greenberg Gallery as its U.S. rep. The work found its way to walls in dozens of museums around the world before landing at Fotografiska.
Who knows what Maier would say about all this? âNothing is meant to last forever,â she once told an employer. âYou have to make room for other people. Itâs a wheel. You get on, you have to go to the end, and then someone else has the same opportunity.â
Through September 29, this body of work sits in a grand photo-exhibition venue that will soon be shuttered. Through the magic of the camera, reflections from the eyes of Vivian Maier have attained a sort of permanence.
