Em 2012, Jay e Lola resolveram sair da banda depois de brigar com os outros membros. Aparentemente, o estilo musical não era mais o que eles queriam: os primeiros álbuns de rock tiveram bastante envolvimento de ambos, mas quando Brand New Heart saiu, o envolvimento deles nas músicas caiu porque a gravadora queria uma pegada mais pop: ou seja, com menos bateria e menos guitarra. As brigas foram inevitáveis, e muitos fãs acreditam que foi um show de estrelismo e que ambos queriam atenção.

Na infância demonstrou ser extremamente artístico. Foi um líder excepcional nas peças da escola, se empenhava ao máximo nos recitais e sempre com o intuito de receber o devido destaque, adorando com que os outros reafirmassem o que ele já sabia: Jay McFly tem talento. 

Tal consideração fez com que o menino conseguisse o papel principal em Me Deixaram Sozinho 3, a continuação da franquia de sucesso que, naquele momento, receberia um novo ator. Apesar da experiência incrível que recebera, as críticas disseram que o menino de sete anos foi terrível na atuação, além de um roteiro fraco e forçado. Levando Jay diretamente para o mundo do anonimato de novo.

Conforme os anos foram passando, a adolescência chegando e sua ida para uma escola diferente onde não se sentia bem-vindo ou artisticamente livre, Jay aos poucos deixou sua personalidade extrovertida para adotar um desânimo evidente diariamente. Aos quinze anos começou a trabalhar em um café enquanto servia a bebida para pessoas que muitas vezes odiava, tudo se tornou rotineiro. A zona de conforto era reconfortante. Dito isso, eu poderia dizer que o tédio era visível na vida do adolescente. Acordar 6h; xingar o despertador; reclamar do tempo, independente de chuva, neve, sol, arco-íris; escolher alguma roupa que fique ok com o avental na cafeteria; higiene matinal (quando dava tempo, brincadeira); o diálogo clássico: "— bom dia, filho" "— é, é isso aí"; bicicleta, aula, sino velho avisando que a porta do café abriu; água para ferver. Simples assim, os diálogos monótonos aconteciam ao longo do dia.

Sua vida é essa, sem perspectiva, sem animação e completamente rotineira. Frustrado. Talvez pudesse ser chamado de sem sonhos, mas alguém que ganha o mínimo salarial e quase nada de gorjeta consegue juntar dinheiro para faculdade? Talvez só em filmes ou na família de políticos. Todavia, assim que iniciou os pensamentos que a faculdade não era para ele, não tinha talento artístico e que estava destinado a trabalhar em subempregos, McFly se encontrou nas guitarras com afinação mais grave e nas bandas pop punk, hardcore e, de vez em quando, metal. Considerando sua até então recém vontade de se tornar um rockstar, o que perfeitamente se encaixou com a proposta de se juntar ao Paraplus. Eles conseguiram em pouco tempo uma influência enorme de rock alternativo, o que basicamente reinava na época. O sucesso de Paraplus era gigantesca: turnês intermináveis, cachês ótimos - considerando que alguns anos atrás Jeremiah recebia um salário ínfimo no café, entrevistas em jornais e em canais de televisão, convites para premiações e, o mais importante: fama e reconhecimento, aquilo que não teve na sua tentativa como ator na infância.

Porém, com o lançamento de Brand New Heart, o terceiro álbum da banda, J se sentiu subutilizado e inútil para o grupo. Da mesma forma que sentiu-se com as críticas em Me Deixaram Sozinho 3, foi criticado por especialistas nesse álbum de estúdio e nos últimos shows da banda. Não queria mais integrar a um grupo onde sua participação era subestimada, ideias largadas as traças e com um gênero musical que não o agradava mais. Sinceramente? Sabia que receberia infinitas críticas e não se importaria em criticá-las de volta. Assim o fez, de maneira recorrente enviava shades para Paraplus e expunha sem medo coisas que aconteceram no backstage da banda. O McFly parou com isso quando recebeu a notícia que sua irmã voltara a integrar o grupo. Decepção pura, diria. 

Com sua saída da banda em 2012, Jay foi aprovado na Berkeley, mas além disso foi o período em que imaginou ter a formação perfeita de uma banda e agora 100% rock. O grupo, até então sem nome, tocou em algumas festas e o sucesso parecia estar vindo aos poucos. Só não contavam que Jay seria traído pelo seu melhor amigo de banda e a ex-namorada. Aquilo foi mais que o suficiente para a banda de pouco mais de seis meses tomar um fim e, quanto a turnê que durou menos de um mês. No ano seguinte começou a trabalhar como produtor musical, produzindo principalmente músicas pop - o que era irônico, porque justamente saiu da da banda por ter se tornado pop demais. Pulicou um livro cyberpunk, fez aparições em filmes - principalmente de comédia romântica, mas o único realmente famoso foi Aquele Dia, onde fãs de Paraplus disseram que ele apenas interpretou uma versão dele mesmo como personagem. Sua última volta aos trend topics foi sua participação em Passando um tempo com o Ex, onde gerou diversos comentários.

Apesar de parecer super ativo e cheio de trabalhos, a maior parte das coisas não resulta em grande sucesso, além de que é um péssimo investidor do dinheiro que recebe;

Uma personalidade caótica que beirava ao surto dos professores, permitiu com que Jay marcasse presença sempre nas visitas de detenção. Alguma piada de mau gosto ou uma pegadinha com alguém tornava-se a razão de passar suas tardes limpando salas na escola ou simplesmente passando o tempo entediado;

O primeiro instrumento que aprendeu a tocar foi o banjo, mas considerava difícil demais, apesar de querer continuar a aprender algo sobre música;

Há anos usa um colar de prata com um pingente de Sol, mas não tem nenhuma história muito fantástica envolvendo o acessório, apenas comprou num dia aleatório no shopping;

Seu sorvete favorito é o de manga, na verdade poderia dizer que qualquer coisa que tenha manga no meio fica bom, desde saladas até sucos. Já tentou fazer um bolo com a fruta, mas digamos que não deu muito certo;

Constantemente é pego conversando consigo mesmo ou com algum objeto inanimado, o que sempre causou certo estranhamento nos amigos e familiares, mas acabam se acostumando;

A maior parte de suas roupas são pretas;

Sabe andar de skate. Bom, sabe andar, mas se perguntar se anda bem… daí é uma outra questão;

Seu Instagram é em Black & White, mas dificilmente posta fotos, é um momento bem raro;

Nunca, em hipótese alguma o chame pelo nome, ele não suporta. É Jay, J, no máximo Jerry, mas nunca Jeremiah;

Com quinze anos comprou sua guitarra favorita, não qualquer uma, a famosa que fazia questão de citar em todas entrevistas. O instrumento nomeado de Melody foi, segundo ele, responsável por Jay perceber que realmente valera o investimento na carreira musical.

United States Tour of Terror 2023: Morbid Angel's 40th Anniversary (The Masquerade-Atlanta)

Before this review begins, I want to share the GoFundMe Page link for Fred Livingston, Jr., who died on March 31st, 2023, when a tornado came through Belvidere, Illinois, and collapsed the roof at the Apollo Theatre right before Morbid Angel took the stage. Fred leaves behind three sons, Alex, Fred III, and Shane, plus a family that loved him very much. 48 people were also harmed that night at the Apollo Theatre, including Michelle Meyers who was seriously injured with a broken spine and 10 ribs, and a huge laceration on the back of her head. You can also go to Michelle’s GoFundMe Page and help. I am proud to be part of the metal community as we come together to help our fellow metal heads when tragedy strikes. We also want to wish a speedy recovery to founding member of Morbid Angel Trey Azagthoth who recently had an incident at the Tampa Bay show at the Orpheum (04/21/2023) due to dehydration and had to be helped off the stage.

While celebrating their 40th anniversary with the United States Tour of Terror 2023, Morbid Angel stopped by The Masquerade (Atlanta) with opening support from Revocation, CRYPTA, and Vitriol. Morbid Angel is a death metal band that started as a band in 1983 in Tampa, Florida. The band consists of Trey Azagthoth (guitars/keyboards) followed by Steven Tucker (vocals/bass), Dan Vadim Von (guitars), and Scott Fuller (drums). They have released nine (9) LPs, two (2) Live albums, two (2) EPs, and various singles/demos.

Growing up as a teenager in the 90s, I was front and center for the rise of death metal bands (domestic and international) throughout metal music. Morbid Angel was a pioneer in the art of death metal and can be associated with influencing numerous death metal bands past and current. After first hearing their second album, Blessed Are the Sick, I was completely blown away by their musical style and production.  Morbid Angel carved a niche in the death metal genre and never let go of that hold. Morbid Angel can still draw a major crowd in venues across the metal landscape and have fans leaving happy but wanting more. This evening at The Masquerade was just like that, Morbid Angel took the stage and started their onslaught of songs. By the time it was over, the crowd was so enamored with this set you could tell the crowd wanted Morbid Angel to play on!

Revocation (also known as Cryptic Warning 2000-2006) is a thrash/technical death metal band from Boston, Massachusetts, and has been together since 2000. Revocation consists of Dave Davidson (vocals/guitars), Brett Bamberger (bass), and Ash Pearson (drums). The band is currently signed to Metal Blade Records. As Revocation, they have released eight (8) LPs, two (2) EPs, and several music videos. During the time they were known as Cryptic Warning, they released one (1) LP and two (2) Demos. During the Cincinnati tour stop, Dave tripped on a cable and broke his wrist while breaking his fall. For the remainder of the tour, Dave will only be able to sing. As the band coined, Dave is ‘pulling a Hetfield’ about James Hetfield from Metallica breaking his wrist in 1986 before a show in Evansville, Indiana.

This would be my first time seeing Revocation, but I knew injury or not they were bringing their A-game for this entire tour. From start to finish, Revocation did not let off the gas pedal with a barrage of fan favorites like “Diabolical Majesty” and “Of Unworldly Origin”. I was pleased that they played “The Outer Ones” and “Re-Crucified” during this tour stop at The Masquerade.

Vitriol is a death metal band from Portland, Oregon that started playing in 2013 but was originally named Those Who Lie Beneath between 2005-2013. The band is currently signed to Century Media Records and has released one (1) LP, two (2) EPs, and one (1) Single. The band’s lineup consists of Adam Roethlisberger (vocals/bass), Kyle Rasmussen (vocals/guitars), Stephen Ellis (guitars), and Matt Kilner (drums). This would also be my first time seeing Vitriol live. As expected, Vitriol was prepared to give the eager fans in the crowd exactly what they wanted. And that was a powerful and energetic performance fueled by Vitriol firing on all metal cylinders.

CRYPTA is a Brazilian death metal band that became active in 2019 and is signed to Napalm Records. The band features Fernanda Lira (vocals/bass), Taina Bergamaschi (guitars), Luana Dametto (drums), and Jessica di Falchi (guitars). They have released one (1) LP and four (4) Singles. Finally, CRYPTA was the band my partner and I were most excited to see live this evening. From listening to their album, Echoes of the Soul, I hear some vocal influences from Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P. to the late and great frontperson from the iconic band Death) plus CRYPTA is a band that plays exceptionally together as noted in some live videos circulating the web such as “Shadow Within”.  Masters of their craft, CRYPTA, have taken a proverbial seat at the table and they are hungry for more. Keep this band in your purview because this is not the last time you will hear of them in the metal community. I for one, cannot wait for their next performance in Atlanta, and, fingers crossed, I get the opportunity to capture that moment again.

2. Did you reread anything? What? — Oh absolutely, I’m a chronic rereader! Among other things, I reread all of Ursula K. LeGuin’s Hainish novels and stories (thank u public library for having the library of congress collections) in two weeks while I was subbing middle school full time, which definitely got me through some looong days. I love moving through those collections chronologically and seeing LeGuin’s development as a writer. Also definitely reread a bunch of K. J. Charles this year, like every year.

3. What were your top five books of the year? — Damn, hard question. I think Shane McCrae’s collections The Gilded Auction Block and Cain Named the Animal both get to be here for sure, I’ve been obsessed with them since I read them. Nona the Ninth somehow managed to live up to the hype, a remarkable feat considering its predecessors. The Sparrow was harrowing but very beautiful, great use of sci-fi tools for a character drama. Aaaand Kevin Young’s Jelly Roll is just a crazy good collection of love poems.

6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to? — I started my masters this fall so I am beset on all sides with good recommendations that I never got around to reading lol. My big ones that I want to get to in the new year are Obits by Victoria Chang, The Book of Hours by Kevin Young, and The Family is a House by Dustin Pearson.
