Shaman King (2021) rewatch: ep 1
I decided to rewatch the 2021 anime (again) because it's been a few months since I last sat down and watched it. chronicling my opinions on each episode because why not
I always forget 2021 opens with this scene because literally no other version does lmao. makes sense because the first few episodes are kind of episodic/meandering but with how much they sped it up we get to the shaman fight within 5 episodes? and even though the hao/yoh siblings thing is pretty obvious it still feels weird to put it here
Tumblr media
soul salvation may be my least favourite shaman king op but it still slaps (over soul is the best one fight me. and also go listen to the peaky p-key remix of it. my friend who plays rhythm games sent it to me and they were right. it good)
Tumblr media
absolutely iconic shot it gives me so many brain noises
Tumblr media
manta suddenly being able to see ghosts is never explained, I don't think. takei my guy holy shit
Tumblr media
one day I'm going to take the time to stand on a bridge for a while. not anytime soon I don't have the patience
Tumblr media
I have nothing to say about this screenshot yoh's just adorable. he does look a lot younger in these early episodes too
Tumblr media
I love how despite yoh's general persona his first response to someone messing with his friend was moderate violence
Tumblr media
hyoi gattai is very cool and should have been used more after they introduced over soul. every time they bring it in after over soul (ren vs nichrom, jun vs hon hon in red crimson) it's one of the coolest scenes imaginable
Tumblr media
and so the descent of ryu's hair begins
Tumblr media
I didn't think local smithies were that common until I was talking to my dad and apparently my hometown has one. so that's neat
Tumblr media
totally 100% just friends and not gay at all you guys
Tumblr media
2021 really just throws ren in immediately. it's like prologue over here's an emo with the most ridiculous design you've ever seen. I actually randomly found a jacket like his at the thrift store for like $6 and it's one of my most prized possessions
Tumblr media
and of course the 2021 eds are the best pieces of shaman king animation I've ever seen. they're like those funkuro still images in motion. and this first one is The Best it has pirica in it
Tumblr media
so excited to watch through this series again it's my beloved. I am also watching through 2001 currently but they're Different ok.
episode 1 is fun because I always remember watching it for the first time on a road trip in the middle of the night and just being. so confused. by everything. and now it's just oh yeah ren's hair we've all seen it

Note
if you do read any of it you gotta tell me I love watching people experience it
just know that the 2001 and 2021 versions are very different and the manga follows the same story as 2021
so you won't be as confused as I was
oh also the first part of both versions is actually good the trash takes a minute to set in fully
I love seeing ppl playfully trash on their anime/manga that have the same amount of stupid shit as my anime/manga hyperfixation so I can watch and go
"yeah buddy me too... Stupid shit happening !! :3"
yeah from what I've gathered mirai nikki and shaman king have a similar flavour of stupid. and I do love to trash on my beloved
you have unlocked an excuse for me to infodump please stand by
the anime adaptation of flowers (the sequel to the kanzenban/2021 version) is coming out next janurary. I am very excited for this. I have absolutely zero faith in it being good. shaman king flowers has about 11 chapters of being fun before it devolves into bad fanfic of the author's own story. I'm so pumped for the anime it's gonna suck so bad
I also have a very deep love for the 4kids dub of the 2001 anime (yes it's one of Those). given that shaman king is already batshit insane enough you can imagine how that went. they gave ren an over the top british accent. he is so very not british. they gave lyserg an american accent. he is so very british. it's art

I finished watching Shaman King 2021 yesterday! Some scattered thoughts on Episodes 38-52!
So much happened in this episode but absolutely everything has been wiped from my brain because WHAT is Marco's battle outfit —
Episode 38
Episode 39
I really need Team The Ren to win this fight!
Yoh finally gets to share his big news, lol
Man, the X-Laws' reveal was a big deal but again, it went at a 100 miles an hour so there wasn't much space/time to absorb everything... and I can't believe how huge that table has gotten, lol
Marco is. A dope.
Episode 40
For me, a Team Horohoro fan, this episode was... truly a lot. I want to know his full story (and despite what Yoh and Ren say, I know that they do, too). He was seriously amazing and guh, just such a fantastic character. I loves the kanji and etymology lesson from Hao, too.
I'm still kinda shocked that Yoh is back in the Shaman Fight as I thought that his being out of the game was a massive divergence that was going to set the series apart, but the way things have worked out is pretty cool!
And the Five Elemental warriors are gonna come from Gandhara, huh? Nice!
The new ending is GORGEOUS. Whoa whoa.
(Also, finally getting some closure for why Yoh has felt so off — poor chilled boy is so stressed.)
Episode 41
hjdjd THIS OST IS OUTSTANDING
I think Marco is dead dead (unless he'll be revived?) and phew, the stuff with the X-Laws' satellite was cool! ALTHOUGH. I'm wondering what the heck they saw that made Hao so damn angry.
Sati doesn't waste any time taking prisoners fjdk
YOH VS HIS ANCESTOR? NICE NICE NICE!
Honestly, some moments have been jawdropping fjhfh
And Oh!Oni was back! And beloved Matamune!
I love this Yoh and Amidamaru focus, eee
Episode 42
I am just becoming increasingly incoherent EVERYTHING IS SO EXCITING but phew, so many people kicked the bucket in this ep?
I am emo about Yohsen oh maaan
I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE HAS BEEN THIS BIG SECRET ALLIANCE BETWEEN GANDARA AND THE PARENTS AND MATAMUNE FHDJ YOWWW
Episode 43
And now one of Manta's relatives is getting in on the action and trying to nab the Great Spirit PHEWWW
Jun having trained with Sati? Whoa! And having the mana to resurrect THREE people? When Faust could only do one? I have some questions, but I'm happy my girl is involved!
But since Anna has also mastered the Ultra Senji Ryakketsu, surely she should also be able to resurrect people?
This is so wild but it's exciting so I'll roll with it!
Episode 44
ANNA VS HAO and there are still so many secrets there? THE TENSION.
And then the coffee!! I'm so glad that Yohsen is somehow still around fjfjf
Though damn, Hao, you cheapskate: pay your damn bill!
Tao Ran and Tao Yúan on screen together, yahoo! (Flipping heck, I loved those moments when Ren was so embarrassed about his family cheering him on, lolol)
BUT BLOODY HELL THIS BATTLE. TBH I really want Team The Ren to win because I do feel that they've got Yoh outclassed... the Ren/Horo lightning/ice combo is just too good. Though wow, Horohoro is MAD.
Episode 45
I'm so close to the end and I'm so sad!
Phew, so we find out which elements the boyos are going to have! I was fully expecting Yoh to have fire, so I was super surprised that it'll be Lyserg instead. Joco with the 'Wind of Change' makes sense, as does Ren with lightning (though I'm surprised that this was an element over metal, tbh, especially since Ren made some comments about Yoh's mastery of metal where Spirit of Sword was concerned) and Horohoro with water. Yoh as the sturdy earth guy is good.
(I'm slightly angsty for Ryu... there wasn't much of an explanation from Sati and Gandhara about precisely why the Elemental Warriors had to be kiddos, apart from the established conversation about adults knowing their ceilings. I assume that there's a bit more detail in the manga.)
This fight against the rest of the world, though? Huh, dramatic! I'm a bit sketchy about the whole laser thing becaaause I thought that was spiritual energy that was fired at the island, but it couldn't have been if the whole world is aware of it? So I have questions!
Everyone chillding in the hot spring is so cute, good gracious.
Episode 46
Wow, show's over. Hao is the Shaman King.
Episode 47
HOW is this going to wrap up in a satisfying way when we still have another 8 Patch Officiants to get through djdjd the Lyserg OST hits so haaaard...
Episode 48
Waaaa the adults are having a barbecue and the kids are fighting for their lives and we are losing healers left and right and Opacho can read minds and there are still SO MANY REVELATIONS crikeyyyy
Episode 49
The tone changes are so odd to keep up with; one second, Redseb and Seyrarm are dying and the next, Kalim is bringing everyone dinner and the guys are taking a break to recover mana when it's been explicitly stated they have 15 hours to save the world! This is so whack to me.
WAIT I nearly missed that there was a ton of stuff after the credits and djhff Horohoro doesn't like his full name?
TIME FOR MY BOY'S BACKSTORYYYY
Episode 50
Oh man, the way Tamiko died was actually harrowing and then she's revealed to be Kororo and Ren's just like. Horohoro is now in dope mode we must ignore him fhfjjlfj
Ren has been taking on most of these fights and his battle against Nichrom was swift, but cool; I loved Joco vs Thalim though — and Thalim himself was adorable!
Episode 51
ALL THE ELEMENTAL SPIRITS VS HAO!
I'm weeping Shaman King is so special the whole thing is just WE WILL DEFEAT THE BADDIE WITH THE POWER OF LOVE.
urgh urgh this OST!!
I'M NOT REAAADY DOR THIS TO END
Episode 52
I definitely cried during the last episode because parts of the ending were so beautiful; everyone coming together to show Hao that he could be saved — that salvation is in accepting your humanity and believing in the humanity of others. And I found Hao's mother's words so freaking soothing... I'm glad that Hao missing his mother was foreshadowed earlier, but we could have had more of that, I think.
And sure, they haven't fixed the world by 2007, but that is OKAY — most of them are around 22 and at that age, I was a wreck! So they have time and their lives to look forward to and... and I guess I disagree with the folks who say that the end of Shaman King is bad because they feel 'everything was pointless'; there's a lot to do and, even with guardian ghosts, shamans can't do everything alone.
I think this is an anime I could definitely rewatch, at some point. Wow. I love these characters and, as much as I griped about this, that and the other, I loved this story.
And I think it's so interesting that Yoh just. Didn't end up as the Shaman King djbdfh that;s definitely not what I was expecting!

They're making a new anime for Shaman King, which was a huuuge part of my childhood, and as I'm watching it and mumbling to myself the usual "oh my god they're ruining it, why are they doing it like thaaaat?" that comes with this kind of situation, I can't help but feel excited to have the opportunity to re-discover it all over again. So I can't stay mad at them for changing stuff about the story and the characters, like speeding things up, etc. But seriously, who are the animators, you can't do something like that in 2021, and who forgot to tell them that Yoh was a very chill character and they apparently remembered it somewhere around episode 4, and noooo they removed Horo Horo's amazing first appearance from the first anime, and...
Tumblr media
... shit I'm starting to get old, aren't I?

Shaman King 2021 lets down its fans
Tumblr media
The pacing of Shaman king 2021 is quite honestly an extreme detriment to the narrative. The complete edition of the manga boasts a hefty 300 chapters yet the current adaptation is slated for a mere 52 episodes. It's insulting how the producers shot away any hopes of this being a promising adaptation right off the bat.
The early episodes had a nasty habit of adapting far too many chapters in one episode; sometimes even going up to 8 chapters. That's practically an entire volume of content with little in the way for proper character development. Battles are often resolved in the same episode they are introduced while every other battle anime lets episodes end on cliffhangers to increase tension. The later episodes thankfully slow things down a little, but the characters still treat each other with a level of familiarity that would only feel natural to manga readers.
A good example of rushed pacing hindering the narrative is when Lyserg joins the X-Laws. The original manga gave Lyserg time to ruminate about his friendship with Yoh and would it meant turning his back on the others. The 2021 version makes Lyserg seem incredibly shallow for leaving the team the first opportunity he got with barely any emotional tension to be seen.
Osorezan Revoir seems to be the only arc to avert this problem. The anime afforded four episodes to adapt a two-volume arc. This resulted in a beloved story arc having the breathing room to completely tell its tale with full emotional impact. Shaman King at its core is a contemplative series. It is a narrative-driven by clashing ideologies and characters contemplating their place in life. Even the small slice-of-life moments of the manga enhance this theme. Rushing through these events as if it's a marathon is a complete disservice to what Shaman King is about.
Tumblr media
Shaman King should have never been restricted to 52 episodes at all. That's nowhere near enough time to properly adapt the full story. The cheap animation isn't helping matters either. It's clear that zero soul(pun intended) was put into adapting iconic scenes; often resorting to still images or using the absolute bare minimum of movement required for any given scene. Shaman king may not be a flashy series like Kimetsu no Yaiba which needs glorious animation to mask its uniform mediocrity, but that still doesn't take away from the fact that battle series need solid animation to have a good impact. The character interactions are already hindered due to the rushed pace; the least we fans deserve is some decent action.
I still enjoy the 2021 anime for what it's worth, but it is painfully apparent that it has failed to bring the manga justice. My only hope is that Shaman King one day receives a console game from a passionate developer like cyberconnect2.

29 April 2021: Happy 18th birthday to Maud Angelica Behn! Maud Angelica is the oldest of Princess Märtha Louise and Ari Behn’s three daughters, and the oldest granddaughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja. She is fifth in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne, after her uncle Crown Prince Haakon, cousins Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, and mother.
iam_marthalouise:
Happy Birthday to our one and only Maud. You are a shining light in this world, seeing everyone around you, being aware, curious, philosophical, deep, funny, creative, a bit quirky and nerdy and above all brave. You have already saved many people’s lives through your words and wisdom. Standing tall in your vulnerability and daring to tread new ground in regards to suicide prevention and mental health does not come lightly, but you deliver with grace and dignity. I am so so proud of everything you have accomplished so far and everything you will in the future. Be true to you, my love. You rock! You shine! Just be you. You are more than enough and the times you might doubt that, we are all here to remind you. We got your back. I love you big time.
shamandurek:
Today is my bonus daughter’s 18th birthday. Due to border being closed in Norway I could not attend the festivities to celebrate this amazing woman. So I thought I would post something on how much I love this bright, kind dear soul and amazing artist who had captured my heart when I first met Maud Angelica Behn. When you meet Maud from the moment your eyes meet you know she is a pure heart and God sent angel who is here to bring peace, love, beauty, kindness and generosity from a soul who seeks only to balance life and people with grace. I'm grateful to my beloved Martha Louise and dear soul Ari Behn for creating such a miracle in this life. Only two souls with pure hearts could ever create such a gift for us all. Happy 18th Birthday bonus daughter. I love you for all that you are and more.

Upcoming Jason Momoa Movies and TV Shows to Watch Out For
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Jason Momoa is everywhere. The former Game of Thrones actor is riding high after starring in the popular film Sweet Girl on Netflix, with Season 2 of his Apple TV+ series See set to start streaming this weekend and a key role in Denis Villeneuve’s hotly anticipated Dune adaptation on deck. Oh, and as the DCEU continues to shift and change, he’s still the only Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in sight. Not bad for a guy who got his start on Baywatch: Hawaii.
Things aren’t slowing down any time soon for Momoa. Besides the projects listed above, the actor has a few other big things planned down the road. If you just finished Netflix’s Sweet Girl and you’re looking for more Momoa in your life, here’s where you can expect to see the King of Atlantis next.
See Season 2
Streaming August 26
Apple TV+’s sci-fi dystopian series is set in a far-off future in which humanity collectively lost the sense of sight. Season 1 found Momoa’s Baba Voss reuniting with his sighted stepson Kofun (Archie Madekwe) after defeating Jerlamarel (Joshua Henry), another sighted man who had fathered kids like Kofun all while having a weird messiah complex.
In season 2, Momoa’s Baba will have to go toe-to-toe with another big bad preoccupied with the possibility of returning sight to the world, his brother Edo Voss, played by Dave Bautista. It’s clear from early looks of season 2 that there’s some bad blood between the hulking brothers, and with season 2 bringing in a new showrunner, Warrior‘s Jonathan Tropper, we can expect the action scenes to be even more explosive in year two.
Dune
In theaters and on HBO Max on Oct. 22
After a failed Alejandro Jodorowsky adaptation, and a polarizing one from David Lynch, Frank Herbert’s “unfilmable” science fiction classic, Dune, will once again hit theaters and streaming this October. Once slated for a Christmas time release, Denis Villenuve’s Dune aims to capture the scale of the epic novel, with huge battles and even larger sand worms.
In a packed cast that also includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, and many more A-listers, Jason Momoa is playing Duncan Idaho, the swordmaster of House Atreides. Loyal to protagonist Paul, the ducal heir of House Atreides, Duncan is a mentor to Paul and an ambassador to the Fremen, the inhabitants of the the planet Arrakis.
There’s no telling if Villenuve’s Dune will make the hard science fiction of its source material palatable for a wide audience, but Momoa has had success in parts tied to beloved novels before, and there’s no doubt he’ll make Duncan Idaho into something memorable on screen.
Aquaman and the Last Kingdom
In theaters Dec. 16, 2022
Production has begun on the second Aquaman film, but the plot of the Jason Momoa-starrer mostly remains obscured in murky water. However, returning director James Wan has provided an intriguing update that references a cult classic 1960s Italian horror film as its main source of inspiration.
“Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires,” Wan recently told Total Film. “You can take the boy out of horror but you can never take the horror out the boy.”
But does the cult-classic Mario Bava sci-fi film about spaceships haunted by mysterious alien lifeforms fit into the underwater superhero aesthetic of Aquaman? Wan thinks the fans will roll with it.
“Well, the first movie took a lot of people by surprise, right?” Wan said. “And that’s partially because they were not familiar with the comic book, which deals in this very lurid, strange world. People were taken aback that I didn’t throw all that stuff away and make a dark, heavy film. But I didn’t feel that would have been right for it. So, with the second film, I feel it will be easier for people to accept where we go because I’ve already laid the foundation.”
We’ll see exactly where Wan, Momoa, and company will go when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on Dec. 16, 2022.
The Last Manhunt
Release Date TBD
Filming on this Western has been completed for some time, and the movie was set to premiere Aug. 27 at Pioneertown International Film Festival before the event was delayed by the surging COVID-19 Delta variant.
Jason Momoa exec produced and has a story credit on The Last Manhunt, which is based on true events. According to the synopsis, the film follows a Native American cowboy known as Willie Boy, who was chased into the hills by a sheriff’s posse in 1909 after Willie Boy fell in love with a woman named Carlota. Carlota’s father, a Chemehuevi shaman and local tribal leader, refused to let the young couple be together, and in a fatal confrontation, Carlota’s father was killed by an accidental gun shot and the young lovers fled to the sun enslaved Mohave desert.
The film was shot near where the actual events took place and local tribes were recruited to appear in the movie as extras or stand-ins. Momoa, who was originally onboard to direct but had to back out due to other commitment, was said to have fallen in love with the story and was insistent on getting the input of tribal members. The story was adapted to film once before in Robert Redford’s Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here.
The film stars Martin Sensmeier as Willie Boy, Mainei Kinimaka as Carlota, and Momoa appears In a brief role as Big Jim. Directed by Momoa’s See costar Christian Camargo, The Last Manhunt currently does not have a scheduled release date.
Slumberland
TBD 2022
From Hunger Games franchise director Francis Lawrence, Slumberland is a live-action adaptation of the comic book series Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay. Taking a gender-flipped approach to the source material, Slumberland tells the story of a young girl (Marlow Barkley) who discovers a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland, and with the help of an eccentric outlaw, she traverses through dreams and flees nightmares, with the hope that she will see her late father again. Guess who will be playing that eccentric outlaw.
No, you’re not dreaming—that’s Jason Momoa with a full set of horns. Here’s a sneak peek behind the scenes at SLUMBERLAND, a new adventure story about an eccentric outlaw (Momoa) who guides a young hero (Marlow Barkley) through a secret dreamworld. Coming to Netflix in 2022. pic.twitter.com/QZIaQbk7HM
— NetflixFilm (@NetflixFilm) April 6, 2021
Momoa looks wonderful sporting big horns and extravagant outfit. His character, Flip, is described as a “nine-foot-tall creature that is half-man, half-beast, has shaggy fur, and long curved tusks.” They’ve certainly have got the man for the job.
Slumberland will also feature Weruche Opia, India de Beaufort, Kyle Chandler, and Chris O’Dowd rounding out the ensemble cast.
Cliffhanger
(TBD)
A female-led reboot of Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger is in the works from director Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour.
Speaking to Deadline, Amirpour said, “I instantly knew the elements of the story I wanted to tell. There’s a special place in my heart for an action-survival movie. I’ve always been attracted to the theme of mountain climbers who, like filmmakers, have a certain madness to them. I love genre and fantasy and in this type of survival film you’re playing with real fear.”
“We are setting out to create a thrill-ride on the mountain which taps into the primal side of an action movie, where you see what a person is capable of doing to survive in the most extreme situations, pushed to the limits,” she continued. “Add to that some high-stakes espionage and a badass female mountain climber as the lead and it becomes a truly epic reinvention of what made the original Cliffhanger movie so fun and so thrilling.”
There’s no word on casting for the female lead, but Momoa is said to be involved in the film, with at least a cameo planned for the actor. Momoa confirmed as much with a post on his Instagram.

Untitled Momoa-Dave Bautista Buddy Cop Movie
TBD
What started as a text exchange between two frequent co-stars has now become a public promise: we are going to get a Jason Momoa/Dave Bautista buddy cop film at some point.
After Bautista tweeted about the idea, Momoa took things even further by going on The Late Late Show with James Corden and expanding on the idea.
“[Bautista] literally texted me four days ago, going, ‘We need to do a buddy cop film,’” Momoa told Corden. “We love each other. We are on See and Dune together. And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And he said, ‘Let’s do it in Hawaii.’ And I said, ‘Let’s do it. I have an idea.’ So it’s off to the races now. We’re doing it.”
“It sells itself, bro,” he continued. “Dave loves wearing Speedos. I love wearing board shorts. And both of us with our shirts off. He’ll be grumpy and I’ll be charming. Boom. It sells itself, bro. I have the hair. He doesn’t have hair. We cover all the demographics.”
Obviously this project is in a very early stage, but Momoa is right — this thing sells itself. Sign us up for opening day tickets, please!

Tumblr media
I love how ren clearly knows who yoh is and where to find him but instead of just showing up to steal his spirit he had to do it in the most dramatic way possible by ambushing his friend in a cemetery
Tumblr media
I also love how yoh's just been treating ren like another best friend since before he even knew him 😭 they're so fun your honour I want to put them in a magic bullet together
Tumblr media
ren's random environmental motives that go away in like ten chapters my beloved. it's so random and basically never brought up again
Tumblr media
car bisection iconic moment
Tumblr media
cannot unsee the absolutely hilarious way this scene is drawn in the manga takei just made ren tiny for no reason
Tumblr media
personally I think ren should have kept calling him this for the entire rest of the series I think that would have been fun. maybe the monkie kid has poisoned my brain idk

I also have a very deep love for the 4kids dub of the 2001 anime (yes it's one of Those). given that shaman king is already batshit insane enough you can imagine how that went. they gave ren an over the top british accent. he is so very not british. they gave lyserg an american accent. he is so very british. it's art
