Shaman King “Fractured Duality” - Alternative Universe.
Continued from here.
Episode Two
“Another Shaman”
(1)
“Yoh!!”
Hao desperately scrambled down the Funbari hill side, stumbling a bit as he felt his legs go slightly weak from the intense adrenaline he could feel pulsating around his body - and for a brief moment he felt the sudden strange sense of déjà vu - as the fear of being useless and weak in the moment his little brother needed him the most momentarily overwhelmed his mind.
His eyes wide, he finally laid his sight on the immense danger in front of him. Three hideous bear-sized oni demons - each with huge jittery soul-piercing eyes and large spiny flesh-tearing fangs - were surrounding the weapon-less, spirit-less and oversoul-less shaman - who remained frozen in fear at their centre.
“What the hell are those things?!!” screamed the voice of the small human who - for some reason he could not explain - continued to dash after Hao and straight into the danger unfolding.
Almost like he had completely forgotten about the human’s presence, Hao snapped his head back towards Manta behind him. He then looked down at the restored relic he was holding in his hand. As he did, his mind quickly ran through the options at his disposal - then he immediately landed on the most important one. He thrusted the sword into Manta’s hands.
“Run Manta! And take this with you and keep it safe!” demanded Hao.
“What? Don’t you need this to fight those things?!” retorted Manta, both equally confused and afraid of the sudden changing circumstances.
“It’s not mine to use. Just go! Get out of here! Now!”
Hao turned back to the onis at the foot of the hill as he continued to sprint towards them. Manta slowed to a halt.
“But - but they’re just g-g-ghosts right?” shakily laughed Manta. “They - they can’t - “
Manta and Hao watched in horror as one of the onis picked up a large loose tombstone and threw it directly at Yoh - who fortunately managed to leap out of the way before the stone crashed to the ground and crumbled into pieces.
“They can interact with the living world?!!!” screamed Manta as he ran away in the opposite direction as fast as possible, tears streaming down his face.
Hao mentally summoned his spirit ally. The small golden yellow sprite appeared next to him and glided through the air by his side. He again silently gave it its instructions and the glowing yellow spirit instantly turned a blood red colour and transformed into a taller slim demon-like creature. It jetted through the air towards Yoh and swiftly scooped him up into its long arms and then elegantly pushed itself from the ground and into the air - immediately carrying Yoh away from the dangerous scene.
“Wait - no! Put me down!” protested Yoh as he struggled against the Spirit’s hold as he tried to crane his head to look back at Hao. “What are you doing, Hao?! You can’t face them by yourself!”
As Hao watched his Spirit Ally successfully carry out its rescue, he brought himself to an abrupt stop on the path, panting heavily. He took a moment to examine the three ugly creatures in front of him. He immediately recognised their type and form. The kind of onis that are drawn to and feast upon sadness, darkness and pain. Had he been the one who had summoned them to this place?
The three creatures now slowly turned their attention to the only one left in their midst. Crawling along on all fours, they unanimously began to sharply inhale the air and snarl in Hao’s direction. And almost in unison - all three began to charge towards their new spirit-less and defenceless victim.
Before Hao could react - he was suddenly dumbstruck to witness how each one of the impending creatures were suddenly frozen in large blocks of ice. And out of no where, an airborne snowboarder glided over the cemetery wall and landed elegantly in front of him and the three frozen creatures.
Kicking his board from the ground and into his grasp, Hao’s blue haired rescuer wiped his brow with his other arm and took a few steps towards his three immobilised ice sculptures.
“Man - these things are relentless!” laughed the Aniu shaman. “And they move fast!”
The ice wielding shaman now turned his attention to the one he had just saved from a gruesome end. Hao was stunned to see the friendly familiar face looking back at him with a slight look of cautious concern in his eyes.
“Oh - it’s you. I should’ve known - you seem like just the type.” said the Aniu shaman with a hit of sarcasm.
“What? Horokue? What are you -?”
“Uh - we’re not really on full names terms, my guy.” interrupted the ice shaman. “The name’s HoroHoro. And you’re the twin bro of the guy that kicked my butt in the preliminaries. I never forget a face. And you guys have the same one, so - “
“HoroHoro, focus. What do you know about these demons?” demanded Hao, glancing over at the three motionless creatures.
“All I know is, out of nowhere, they’ve been popping up all over town.” sniffed HoroHoro as he looked up at the rigid monsters. “My theory is they’re being summoned by someone or something around here. Which brings me to the next point - are you the one responsible for these guys?” asked HoroHoro, his eyes narrowing as he examined Hao’s face as he awaited a response.
“No!” retorted Hao, slightly irked. But then his expression wavered. “Well, at least - I don’t think so…”
“”I don’t think so” is not very reassuring.” scoffed HoroHoro, with a look of doubt on his face.
Hao shook his head.
“These types of oni manifest and feed off of negative thoughts.” explained Hao.
“So… you’re suggesting it was an accident?” muttered HoroHoro, raising an eyebrow.
“No, it can’t be,” breathed Hao, taking a step away from HoroHoro and looking towards the ground. “This is the first time I’ve seen one since - wait,” Hao turned around and locked his gaze back on HoroHoro. “Did you just say Yoh defeated you in the preliminaries? You - you remember that?” asked Hao, his eyes suddenly alight as he awaited a response.
“Uh… yeah?” laughed HoroHoro. “You know, before the “big G.S” literally ghosted us?”
Hao paused, confused by the Aniu shaman’s words. HoroHoro pulled up the sleeve of his jacket and showed off his blue oracle pager with a blank screen.
“The pagers? They all died? I stuck around here hoping for something to happen or for news but - all the Patch guys, they just - disappeared. Do you know anything about it?” questioned HoroHoro.
Hao paused again, then he looked away from HoroHoro’s hopeful stare.
“No.” he lied. “I’m just as much in the dark as you… if not more.”
HoroHoro watched Hao’s expression change to one of slight anguish and confusion. He smirked slightly.
“You’re really weird. Do you know that?” he chuckled, before standing up straight and smiling warmly at the troubled shaman in front of him. Hao looked back at the familiar friendly face and managed a smile in return.
“Heh.” breathed Hao. “You don’t even know the half of it.”
