Shaman King “Fractured Duality” - Alternative Universe
Continued from here.
Episode One (3)
Later that evening, Oyamada Manta found himself sitting alone and brooding quietly at the Funbari train station. In the distance, the sound of an approaching locomotive could be heard rattling along as it began to pull into the station.
“Ugh. Why can’t I get that Yoh kid out of my head? It’s like I’m obsessed with him or something. He’s just a cat-loving star-gazing good-for-nothing tombstone-sitting weirdo!”
As the train arrived at the platform, Manta got to his feet. But he found himself staring at the floor and not moving. After a moment, he looked up at the sky and observed the speckled starlight peeping through the clouds.
“Speaking of stars… I wonder if he’s at the cemetery again tonight…”
The next day
“What the heck happened to your face, Manta?”
“I’m pretty sure I told you not to go near that cemetery again.”
“This is so unlike you, what’s going on?”
“First you start going on a rant about ghosts.”
“And now there’s all this!”
As his classmates took it in turns trying to understand why Manta was black and blue and bandaged almost from head to toe, Manta could feel tears beginning to form in his eyes as it all became too much for him to bear. Even the teacher remained quietly concerned for his injured student standing at the front of the classroom.
“But ghosts do exist.”
Manta looked up from the floor and immediately clasped eyes on Asakura Yoh walking into the classroom, he had a determined look on his face as he locked his gaze on Manta. After a moment or so, another identical boy appeared following immediately behind him. He too had a hardened expression on his face, though his eyes seemed colder and somewhat less friendly than those of his identical twin.
As the twins stood side by side at the front of the classroom, a moment of hush came over the room as all present stared at the identical duo. The boy with longer hair was dressed in sharp contrast to the classmate they had already met, as he wore casual dark clothing with not a single article of school uniform in sight. He also went a step further in his disregard for school etiquette as he began to blow a small pink bubble of gum from his lips.
“He was telling the truth! He really does have a twin!” thought Manta as he tried to hide his surprise on his face.
Momentarily turning his attention from Manta, and purposefully ignoring all the nonsense talk about ghosts in his classroom, the teacher stood up straight and tried to smile in a welcoming manner at his new student.
“Ah, Asakura Hao. Good of you to join us. I was unaware that you had decided to enrol, after all.” he said as his eyes slowly scanned Hao up and down.
Asakura Hao did not move or respond. He remained still and silent, keeping his eyes firmly on Manta. The other students in the classroom all exchanged silent looks with one another as they examined their new strange classmate.
“Your attire is in complete violation of the school dress code, but I suppose we can let it slide just this once as it’s your first day. However I am going to have to insist you dispose of your gum.” explained the teacher.
Asakura Hao shot a deathly glare at the teacher in response - those dark hard eyes sent a shiver through the man’s body and he found himself crumbling immediately.
“Or - or we could excuse it just for today. But - but no more gum in future.” babbled the teacher, pulling on his shirt collar as he succumbed to the unusual uncomfortable influence his new student seemed to radiate without even trying.
“So small.” muttered Hao under his breath, before blowing another small pink bubble and popping it loudly - the noise startling almost everyone in the room.
“We heard about what happened from the guys at the cemetery.” quietly said Yoh, looking sympathetically at Manta.
Manta remained still and silent for a moment, but then he turned away from the twins and looked back towards the ground.
“I have no idea who or what you’re talking about. Just leave me alone already.” sadly said Manta.
The twins exchanged a silent look with one another. The others in the room noticed how it seemed like they were communicating with each other with just their eyes.
After a pause, Yoh looked back at the small injured boy.
“So your name… it’s Manta, isn’t it?” muttered Yoh.
“Huh?” mumbled Manta looking back up at Yoh.
****
Manta suddenly found himself being dragged down the school corridor by his wrist, his feet barely touching the floor, as Yoh marched him towards the school exit against his will.
“We’ve gotta go back there and settle the score Manta.” firmly said Yoh.
“Hey - wait a minute! I don’t remember asking for any help!” shrieked Manta. When Yoh ignored him, he turned his head and observed the one walking a few paces behind them with his hands shoved into his pockets.
“And what about you - you’re awfully quiet! This is all your fault in the first place!” angrily snapped Manta.
“Just pretend I’m not even here.” shrugged Hao, looking out the corridor windows as he walked along behind his brother.
“Why are you guys doing this? Why would you want to help me out in the first place?” continued Manta, desperately.
“My brother has a good sense about these things. And he says we need to help you. It’s important to him so, it’s important to me.” casually explained Yoh.
“And what makes you think you’re a match for those guys? Lemme tell you - they were tough! “Wooden Sword Ryu” is off his rocker! It’d be stupid to pick a fight with a guy like him! How exactly do you expect to win?” berated Manta, angrily.
Manta was suddenly stunned when he heard the long haired one marching along behind him start laughing loudly.
“What’s so funny?!!” screamed Manta.
Yoh suddenly stopped in his tracks, he then looked down at Manta and smiled happily at him.
“Don’t worry. It’ll all work out. Plus, we have an ally that’s a lot stronger than him our side.”

Funbari Hill and Yoh's relationship to it is basically a character in their own right. The scenery pages are from the chapter right after Goldva says all participants will never be able to return to the life they knew, and the cover page is an in-between moment of Yoh reaching the place where his fight with Ren will take place. There's a mundanity that underscores the first part of the story (and some points in the later half-- like every conflict ending in a meal of some sort!) that give the characters a strong sense of place. Maybe it also helps illustrate Yoh's preocupation with others' well-being and his empathetic nature, even people he doesn't know.

Shaman King “Fractured Duality” - Alternative Universe
Continued from here.
Episode One (2)
“I’m serious! You have to believe me! There were ghosts! I really saw them!!”
All eyes in the classroom were glued to the small shrieking student jumping up and down on the spot and flailing his arms as he tried desperately to make his fellow classmates take him seriously - but the more he went on, the more deranged his story became.
“You know that ghosts don’t exist, right?” laughed one male student, shaking his head.
“You probably just saw a shadow or something.” dismissed the girl stood beside him, though she had a sympathetic look on her face.
“Sounds like all that studying you’ve been doing has got your brain fried, Manta.” chortled the larger teen of the three, grinning from ear to ear.
“Hey,” said the first student, nudging his friend beside him with a menacing glint in his eye, “what if it’s true and one of the ghosts possessed him?”
All three of the school friends began to laugh out loud amongst themselves. Manta’s eyes almost bulged out of his eye sockets as they continued to tease him.
“What did you say??!” shrieked Manta. Just then - the classroom door opened and their teacher stepped into the room.
“Pipe down, Oyamada.” chastised the teacher, shooting him a stern look. “We’re starting class. Please take your seats.”
Manta felt his face flush bright pink as his teacher penalised him, which was something that had never happened to him before.
All the students made their way calmly to their seats. Manta climbed into his school desk chair and crossed his arms. He tried to make himself as small as possible as he attempted to recover from the embarrassment.
“So, before we begin we have a new…” began the teacher.
Not really paying attention, Manta just couldn’t get that ghoulish encounter from the previous night out of his head.
“Was I imagining everything that happened last night? Could it have actually been a dream?”
“…his name is Asakura Yoh.”
Blinking, Manta sat up in his seat as he clasped his eyes firmly on the boy standing directly in front of him. He felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end as he instantly recognised that face - and those dark, brown eyes.
“Due to family reasons,” continue the teacher, “He has just moved here from Izumo with his - Hm? What’s with that face you’re making Oyamada?”
Manta could feel his chin practically touching the desk in front of him as his mouth hung wide open. He stared boggle eyed in disbelief at the new kid.
“Th- this is him, guys!” screamed Manta, now turning around in his seat and looking back at his classmates - he outstretched his hand and pointed at the boy. “This is the ghost kid I was just telling you about!”
Asakura Yoh didn’t flinch, he just blinked absentmindedly at Manta.
“I have never met you before in my life.” candidly muttered Yoh - earning Manta yet another out breaking of laughter from all his classmates.
“What?!!!”
*****
“Dammit. I won’t be able to focus on studying at this rate. Thinks he can just turn up to school with a hair cut and I won’t recognise him? I’m gonna expose this guy no matter what it takes.”
Manta knew how weird and creepy he was behaving by stalking someone - but curiosity got the better of him. There was something really odd about this guy - and for some strange reason that he could not put his finger on, he was also really interesting too.
Manta watched from a distance as Yoh happily perched himself upon a nearby bridge and began to stare off into the distance. He occasionally would look downward and observe the babbling stream that rippled gently underneath him. Manta stayed out of sight and as silent as possible. He never once took his eyes off Yoh as the hours slowly passed.
“How much longer is he gonna just stand on that bridge doing nothing?”
Yoh sighed pleasantly and craned his head back, observing the sky above him.
“Ah… communing with nature on a beautiful day like this feels amazing!” he called out aloud to himself with a big beaming smile.
“Are you kidding me?!” shrieked Manta, jumping into the air and instantly giving his hidden position away.
“Huh?”
*****
“It sounds like you met my twin brother last night.” giggled Yoh.
As the pair sat together on the nearby grassy verge, Manta couldn’t quite believe how calm and friendly Yoh seemed after he was just caught red handed following and watching him like a complete and utter crazy person. Though Yoh’s reassuring smile seemed to almost completely melt all of Manta’s anxieties away.
“He’s got a weird sense of humour, but, he’s harmless really... well, most of the time.” continued Yoh, laughing slightly.
“Twin brother? Really?” breathed Manta, blinking in slight astonishment.
“Yep!”
“But if you have a twin, then, why wasn’t he at school with you today?” questioned Manta.
“Uh - well, that’s kind of a long story but - he’s a little… old for high school.” awkwardly laughed Yoh.
“What?” said Manta, confused. “But you’re - you’re the exact same age!”
Yoh closed his eyes and let out an extended laugh at Manta’s words, which only seemed to confuse Manta even more.
“Yeah…” bemused Yoh, eventually. “Like I said - it’s kind of complicated. Which reminds me, he’s probably wondering where I am, so - I should probably go home now.”
Yoh got to his feet and turned on his heel to leave. Manta just froze for a moment, stunned by Yoh’s odd explanation. Yoh suddenly stopped still, and turned back to look at Manta.
“By the way. You wouldn’t happen to know who Amidamaru is, would you?” curiously asked Yoh, blinking.
Momentarily shaken by the sudden change of subject - Manta attempted to act like a fully functioning human being and answer the question.
“Yeah - yeah of course! He’s a local hero! The most famous legendary samurai from this town. In fact I’m pretty sure his relics are on display at the folk museum.” explained Manta.
“Really? That’s awesome! Thanks!” cheerily replied Yoh before hurriedly walking away.
Manta found himself cemented to the spot as he watched Yoh’s image disappear from his sight. Then suddenly - he realised he’d forgotten to ask the most important question on his mind.
“W-wait a minute! What about the ghosts?!” called Manta, but he quickly realised he had missed his chance as Yoh was gone. He screwed up his face in frustration and sighed angrily.
“Just who does that Yoh kid think he is? Thinks he can just get a hair cut and make up some ridiculous story about a twin brother and I’ll just forget all about what I saw? I’m not buying it! I’m gonna expose this kid’s secret if it kills me!”
