At first I HATED the relationship between Shakespeare and Hathaway because of the age difference. But after taking in different viewpoints and the whole "second best bed thing" I think they were cute! This post just made me think a terrifying thought that I’d never thought before… and it’s that Horatio has to go on with his life. And now I imagine him, on his trip back to Wittenberg. Wide-eyed. Frozen. He’s got that unmistakable air of a person in shock; most people avoid him instinctively. He’s never been the most loud or extroverted student, but that spring, he falls silent entirely. Wordless, with emptiness in his eyes, he sits in the classroom like a ghost and goes even more rigid when someone uses that word with him - ghost. His grades drop, even though he spends hours on end in the library, it seems like he isn’t reading, just staring at books.

Obviously, he’s the one people ask for information. “What happened?” It haunts him. “I heard Hamlet’s died. I heard that Fortinbras…” It makes him sick. “Were you really there?” He swallows it down and in a monotonous voice, rattles off the list of occurrences to those people who really need to know. Then he goes back to his solitude. Hopes that no one will follow him down the corridors.

I imagine that eventually, he breaks. And a throbbing, aching, empathetic part of him finally understands Ophelia’s death. And he longs for tides and flowers.

It takes months, perhaps years, until he can look at it again; at the piece of paper carefully stored in a drawer of his wooden desk. He runs his fingers over it. The last piece of Hamlet that remains with him. It’s the letter Hamlet sent to him, telling of his escapades on the pirate ship. Feels surreal to read it. Impossible. Horatio’s tears leave perfect circles on the document.

Hiii thanks very much for the ask . I will try and keep this from being an incomprehensibly autistic rant But no promises.

It's difficult to pick a favourite because they're all good in different ways? Gun to my head i would say hamlet, I'm a sucker for a jacobean revenge tragedy. It absolutely made me insane when I read it aged like 12 (autistic danish trans guy. its like the mc was designed to be Just Like Me For Real.) Its probably the shakespeare play ive read the most times outside of studying it for school or whatever. Honourable mentions go to twelfth night (the gender shenanigans...), much ado about nothing (really good. no notes. I love the version with david tennant and catherine tate) and troilus & cressida (it's genuinely quite bad but I enjoy it).

Least favourite is also difficult to choose but I think it goes to taming of the shrew . I don't HATE it but I'm not fond . just a bit sexist innit
