The 27th, 28th and 35th book I consumed this year was the Bone Witch Trilogy by Rin Chupeco. This was an audible included library listen to keep me entertained whilst working. An attempt at summarising The story flashes between Tea’s POV in the past and the Bard, who present day Tea has recruited to tell her story. The past narrative begins when Tea discovers she’s a Bone Witch, after she…

The Shadowglass spoilers (The Bone Witch Series)
Finished chapter 12 and I'm 99% sure the traitor is Althy. I'm making more and more realisations and how it just fits too well.
1) it would be between Shadi, Althy or Tea's mother as suspects for Likh's blight. Shadi isn't a traditionalist but could theoretically still be physically capable (though again she would lack a motive) and the mother has an ordinary heartsglass so she is physically incapable at all. Which leaves only Althy or Shadi.
2) Althy has been with Mikayla from the start as her friend, however, if we look at this just purley physically, she has been around longest and since Mikayla lost her heartsglass AND, most importantly, there when the previous Dark Asha in Mikayla's care "went mad with darkrot" by laying waste to a village. Shadi was not around or knowledgeable of these events. She is too young.
3) If we assume darkrot isn't real or caused by dark heartsglass, then we can also assume that last Dark Asha from before could have been afflicted by the same poison Tea was. She was also dangerously "close" to taming the Daeva and questioning the Elders.
4) Why was Likh specially targeted for the blight? I think this may point to Althy's potential motives. I believe it wasn't just his/her closeness to Tea, but the deviancy from the Elder Asha's ways. Same with Khalad, Althy has been suspiciously distant and I don't think that's a coincidence. I think she's far more traditional in the older Asha ways than she lets on.
5) Althy was too quick to blame Tea. While she wasn't exactly hostile at first, she showed the same exact distance/ indifference to Tea when she was arrested as she tends to show Khalad. I think the latter point may be a stretch, but it gives off the same feel to me; there's distinct inability to frame Tea as innocent because she doesn't WANT Tea to be viewed as innocent.
6) Altaecia was far too quick to become volatile and so against tea. She also immediately blamed her for Mikaela's death, but I don't think it was genuine. It felt too forced. I think she knew tea was innocent, but wanted her to be viewed as guilty once again.
7) She demanded to see Tea's pages far too much and as far too hasty. She wanted to get those pages as soon as possible. She was very likely the one to steal the last pages.
8) I think the traitor would be someone who weasled their way right next to Tea to keep her as a regular ""Bone Witch who will die for her purpose"" rather than finding too much of the truth, and what better position would be as an Asha Sister to her?
As for her motives for all the above, I think it's very likely she was never actually friends with Mikaela but instead was charged to keep watch over her, helped to hide her heartsglass from her and silence Vanor, poisoned the apprentice to compel her into murder/ madness, poisoned Tea and killed Daisy, tried to blight Likh to frame Tea as the one to kill him/her (two birds with one stone), and, finally, was the one behind blighting the Elders and killing Mikaela. I think Althy, if we view her as an agent of the Elder Asha's and perhaps a to-be Elder Asha herself, these crimes make sense. Especially if you see her actions under a lense of traditionalism and trying to keep the status quo.
TLDR:

“Being a girl or a boy or a Deathseeker or an asha isn’t about how you were born; it’s about who you are. You had no say in how you were born, and niether did I, but my ability to be true to who I am is the reason i’m an asha, not a Deathseeker. And the reason you’re an asha, not a Faceless”
Thank you. Lady Likh, for this gorgeous line <3

Book Recs !!
From a Young Adult librarian who only reads Young Adult lol
To Kill a Shadow by Katherine Quinn
Absolutely killed me when I realized this was a new release and I'd have to wait a year for the next. I f*cking loved this book. An addictive and tense love story, a good twist, great action, amazing worldbuilding- I could go on.
“It was greater than divinity, than magic. What I felt for her was infinite.” ― Katherine Quinn, To Kill a Shadow
Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat
I have nothing to say because I'll scream. I love this book and the sequel so much it's on my mind DAILY.
“My whole life, all anyone's ever wanted was to possess me," said James. "The only one who ever set me free was you.” ― C.S. Pacat, Dark Rise
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco
Listen. The first book is not perfect, this book is maybe a 6/10 on a good day but I loved it so much. I went to the second, The Heart Forger and the third, The Shadowglass, and cried at work while reading them. The sequels are masterfully done (in my humble opinion) and no one talks about them. They've faded away from everyone's memory because the first didn't capture people's attention but god are these sequels just...heart crushing. Please please give this series a chance.
“That is the nature of grief. But to grieve means you have loved. To love opens up the possibility for grief. There cannot be one without the other.” ― Rin Chupeco, The Heart Forger

Tea of the Embers? I am reading the books right now, started the last book. I don’t remember that cool moniker of hers. Tea of the Embers… cool.
The Bone Witch HeadCanons
Okay look I know it’s not super popular but I love it so fuck off
also spoilers
Here are some fun headcanons
1.) Kance is Asexual and possibly Aromantic, and puts his country before himself when he continues to rule, he makes a memorial for Tea and Kalen, and one of Mykeala as well. When he dies, Odialia mourns him deeply as one of their best kings.
2.) Likh and Shadi keep competing for the lead role in the Daryashi Oyun, which has two versions now: the new one, written by the Bard, which is the true version, and the old one, Vernasha’s version.
3.) Khalad has read over his Master’s notes so many times he can recite them. He has so many mannerisms inherited from him and veiwed him as a father figure, so Likh decides to make him a little charm to remember him by and Khalad wears it all the time.
4.) Khalad and Likh made Inessa and Fox’s wedding rings.
5.) Zoya takes Althy’s old place and becomes a bodyguard for Inessa and Alyx when Fox is busy.
6.) Tea’s memorial’s always have flowers on them. sometimes they’re vandalized and many people don’t like them, but there are always flowers on them, organized by House Valerian, ordered by Parminia. When she dies, Shadi takes over and continues the tradition.
7.) Knightscross doesn’t have a Tea memorial. It has one for Daisy. Fox visits as often as he can.
I’ll have more later probably. I really love this series, it deserves so much more.

Chapter 14
Kuroki coughed as she sat up, feeling the surge of energy from deep within her body she leaped to her feet and started running around her home collecting various items and bottles and vials, everything she would need for a long trip. As she rushed around she caught a glimpse of herself in a mirror that had long since become greyed and covered with dust. She stretched out a young pale skinned hand and wiped away the years of grime. Staring back at her was a woman, a girl, a baby of only 20 maybe. She was attractive beyond words. Kuroki turned and admired herself, she knew what lay just under the surface, but this skin wasnt going anywhere any time soon, she could even keep hold of it forever if she was careful enough. But she didnt plan on being careful, now wasnt the time for careful. Now was the time for reckless abandon, for throwing caution to the wind and chasing what you want with both hands outstretched, and what beautiful hands they were too. Kuroki had decided that instead of the walking or riding to Shadowglass she would take the alternative, much quicker mode of transport. The thought made her wince, it was like having a tooth pulled, you know it will be quick and you`ll feel better when its over but the anticipation is a killer. She had decided to transmorph to Shadowglass using an old dimensional highway that she had set up years and years ago when she was a much younger model. Well, older than she was at this precise moment but younger than she had been earlier. Using her new, slender, toned legs she walked out into the dappled sunshine of the day, nature was trying to creep towards her home, as it always did. She headed for the strange collection of rocks that lay 30 metres or so from her home. To the average onlooker (not that there had ever been an average onlooker this far up on the Northern Bank, but still) it was just a random weird selection of rocks, some had one or two symbols etched into them but that could have just been kids or passers by, but to Kuroki they were like massive sign posts. These were her dimensional highways, she had connected herself up to a large chunk of the world in her younger days, she just hoped they were all still intact on the other end. She had taken every effort to make sure they would be, building the recieving stones into important buildings or far far away from people, or in secluded forgotten places that no one would think to disturb. But you could never be sure quite what you would be stepping into if you took a highway. Kuroki looked around, she was going to miss this place, her little garden. She looked down at the uneven stone below her, the flat section of it on the top had a small symbol that was more like a hieroglyphic, she bent down and clutched her purse to her now ample and pert chest, taking a deep lungful of air and holding it she pushed onto the symbol and disappeared into the stone.
-
In Shadowglass a straggly looking black and grey tom cat was attempting to preen himself in an alleyway by the side of the courthouse, he was content in his activities. Around him the air buzzed a little and he looked up with and underwhelmed stair as an attractive human with long blond hair blipped into existance right before him. He stared at her for a while, she didnt notice him. The cat, who was one of many cats that roamed freely around Shadowglass, decided that licking himself was much more interesting, so he went back to that. Kuroki hate travelling via dimensional highways, they always muddled her mind up, made her throat hurt and made her need a pee really badly. As she was in an alleyway she decided that she could alleviate at least one of these things, and after that was taken care of she took a herbal cough drop out of her purse and alleviated another of the highways annoyances. At least she hadnt reappeared on top of anyone, or inside a wall, or under water, in fact this alleyway was rather pleasant compared to some of the places she had ended up in in the past. She began to recognise where she was as her mind began so form into straight lines again, she was by the courthouse in Shadowglass, she had to find the boy! the man! Well, he was roughly the same sort of age as she was now so whatever that would make him. But where to start? 'Dinner' was the only answer she recieved from inside her head. Apparently drinking the elixir of eternal youth and then flitting across the world makes you a bit peckish. Kuroki knew she had better things to be doing but as she had no idea where to start with that plan she figured she would follow the only inclination she felt and go and get some grub. She hadnt been able to chew real food in a long time and the thought of a steak was making her salivate an unnerving amount. She could smell the sea, the fish, she tried to remember the last time she had been in Shadowglass, it must have been a long time ago as her memories of the place all seemed to be in black and white. Now the whole place was in colour, bright, shining, dazzling colour. The first tavern she entered didnt sell steak, but the barman kindly directed her down a few side streets to a place that did provide steak. Kuroki took out a mugger on the way that she assumed was a friend of the first barmen, who was now on her list to visit after all this was over (it was quite a long list). She arrived at the Battered Inn, looking up at the tatty slightly disintergrating sign she wondered if the sign was a pun or just painfully honest. Upon opening the door she was aware that it was just honest. Inside there were a couple of other customers, keeping to themselves and trying to hide away from the light as Kuroki entered and walked towards what she could only assume was the bar. The woman behind stared at her, a dead stare, she grunted. "Do you sell steak?" The woman grunted again, but it seemed to be a grunt of confirmation, or at least, Kuroki took it as that. "Wonderful, I would like a steak, cooked well done, oh and also a mug of ale, bring it over yes?" Kuroki realised that she was being rather pleasant, she hadnt been this pleasant in decades, maybe all that age had gotten on top of her? The woman grunted another confirmatory grunt and headed towards the door which lead to the kitchen. There were more muffled grunts between the woman and someone who was employed as a cook but probably should have been sent as far away from the kitchen as possible. She returned and poured the ale out for Kuroki and bought it over to the table in the corner for her. Kuroki watched her walk away, well, limp away as she only had one real leg and the other appeared to be constructed out of bits of table and driftwood.
Kuroki just hoped it was beef steak she was getting.

I started typing up recaps for our Candlekeep sessions about a year ago. So, as we head into the final adventure of Candlekeep Mysteries, I’d like to share some of those recaps here.
The first one I wrote up was our session 37, which was at the start of Book 15: The Scrivener’s Tale
Candlekeep: Session 37 Recap – 1/29/23
There was some additional shopping that happened in the discord between sessions.
Littlebit got a cool amulet and a sweet purple cloak that matches Ayla and Elenia!
The merchant was the cousin of the new mayor of Vermeillon and was pleased to report that the re-opening of the mine is going well.
We began our session at the end of a 4-week downtime. Some researchers at Candlekeep have been hard at work casting their net wide to look for possible solutions for Quickshot’s missing limbs. The Eyes of Amethyst were called in to help narrow the search by combing through some of the books.
We opted to use one of the magic conference rooms at The Hearth to make sure that our search is secure… what with the mysterious Stonky sightings and all.
Ayla was flying through books. Elenia and Littlebit took their time (Littlebit was especially thorough). Zeph fell asleep.
Elenia found an interesting book: The Scrivener’s Tale.
Not helpful in our quest for Quickshot, but interesting to Elenia as the subject matter was the Feywild.
75 pages, written in Sylvan, in spidery handwriting, in black ink with silver flecks.
Details the story of the Princess of the Shadowglass, a ruthless eladrin-turned-archfey. She is positioned as the protagonist against the Queen of Air and Darkness, ruler of the Gloaming Court.
The Princess lost the fight, but was not killed and vowed vengeance on all who wronged her.
Elenia got a shock at the end of the book: it was written by Zerian the Deserter and the scrap of paper that seemed to trigger her fey-related powers was torn from this book.
Also, her hands started feeling fuzzy...
The book is magical and gives off Illusion and Transmutation vibes.
Elenia woke up the following day with some fucky curse stuff going on:
Her arms are covered in Elven writing, matching the story and script of the book. She does not cast a shadow or have a reflection.
Adjutant Ramilir (who brought us the books for review) was absolutely horrified that this book made it into the pile. Littlebit and Zeph seem to think he was sincere in his mortification. He took us to the Great Reader Teles Ahvoste, who specializes in curses, magic items, and the Weave.
This is one hell of a curse. It will get progressively worse. It cannot be removed by Remove Curse or Greater Restoration. The only known removal was via a Wish spell, but there may be other solutions.
The book was brought to Candlekeep for safekeeping about 10 years ago by the adventurer Machil Rillyn, a noble from Baldur’s Gate. He had used almost all of his fortune to end the curse on himself.
The Eyes of Amethyst made haste to Baldur’s Gate via Teleportation circle.
Elenia started hearing a voice, just before we entered the circle…
Per Gubbles (manages the teleportation ring and loves hot dogs): Machil passed away about 10 years ago, shortly after the book was given to Candlekeep. House Rillyn is now led by his niece, Yvandre.
Between the Hall of Wonders and House Rillyn, the gang was attacked by 4 wood elf wizards riding on fomorians.
“Do you seek her?” “HIDING IS NOT GLORYFUL!”
They are in service to a Queen. Littlebit had Elenia stuff one of the bodies in The Hole for questioning.
(She wants to prepare Speak with Dead and Commune tomorrow)
Littlebit banished 2 of the fomorians to their home plane. They did not return.
Loot: 4x Rings of Gleaming Black Glass (10gp each)
Elenia heard the voice once again. It seems The Princess believes Elenia may be of use to her…
Elenia’s response: “If you free me, I can end the curse on you and free the Gloaming Court from their tyrannical ruler.”
In short: books are evil. What’s next?
